Analysis of the physiological effects of intravenous ouabin on left ventricular systolic function and metabolic-to-mechanical energy transfer in conscious dogs reveals the significant positive ionotropic effect of ouabin on the intact left ventricle. Ouabin enhances the myocardial performance and energetics in dogs without oxygen washing or changes in energy transfer efficiency.

Abstract

Cylindrical geometric model-based measurement of canine heart left ventricular volume reveals that changes induced by chronic aortic regurgitation cause symmetric left ventricle enlargement without geometrical alterations of caritary volume. Two-dimensional echocardiography and epicardial dimension transducers may permit accurate estimation of left ventricular cavitary volume in conscious dogs adapting to chronic volume overload.

Abstract

Augmented right ventricular filling at low end-diastolic volume of the left ventricle (LV) causes a leftward movement of the septal shifting, leading to a negative end-diastolic transseptal pressure during cardiac tamponade. This temporary inspiratory LV systolic dysfunction is possibly a primary mechanism of paradoxical pulse. This septal shifting reduces the contribution to the ventricular stroke work as an intermediate step leading to the paradoxical pulse.

Abstract

Flapping flight is the most power-demanding mode of locomotion, associated with a suite of anatomical specializations in extant adult birds. In contrast, many developing birds use their forelimbs to negotiate environments long before acquiring “flight adaptations,” recruiting their developing wings to continuously enhance leg performance and, in some cases, fly. How does anatomical development influence these locomotor behaviors? Isolating morphological contributions to wing performance is extremely challenging using purely empirical approaches. However, musculoskeletal modeling and simulation techniques can incorporate empirical data to explicitly examine the functional consequences of changing morphology by manipulating anatomical parameters individually and estimating their effects on locomotion. To assess how ontogenetic changes in anatomy affect locomotor capacity, we combined existing empirical data on muscle morphology, skeletal kinematics, and aerodynamic force production with advanced biomechanical modeling and simulation techniques to analyze the ontogeny of pectoral limb function in a precocial ground bird (Alectoris chukar). Simulations of wing-assisted incline running (WAIR) using these newly developed musculoskeletal models collectively suggest that immature birds have excess muscle capacity and are limited more by feather morphology, possibly because feathers grow more quickly and have a different style of growth than bones and muscles. These results provide critical information about the ontogeny and evolution of avian locomotion by (i) establishing how muscular and aerodynamic forces interface with the skeletal system to generate movement in morphing juvenile birds, and (ii) providing a benchmark to inform biomechanical modeling and simulation of other locomotor behaviors, both across extant species and among extinct theropod dinosaurs.

Abstract

Congenital anomaly registries have two main surveillance aims: firstly to define baseline epidemiology of important congenital anomalies to facilitate programme, policy and resource planning, and secondly to identify clusters of cases and any other epidemiological changes that could give early warning of environmental or infectious hazards. However, setting up a sustainable registry and surveillance system is resource-intensive requiring national infrastructure for recording all cases and diagnostic facilities to identify those malformations that that are not externally visible. Consequently, not all countries have yet established robust surveillance systems. For these countries, methods are needed to generate estimates of prevalence of these disorders which can act as a starting point for assessing disease burden and service implications. Here, we describe how registry data from high-income settings can be used for generating reference rates that can be used as provisional estimates for countries with little or no observational data on non-syndromic congenital malformations.

416. Quaternionic Gauge Transformations and Yang-Mills Fields in Weyl Type Geometries

Abstract

This elementary discussion generalizes a Weyl geometry to allow quaternion valued gauge transformations and classical Yang-Mills geometric fields. This development will assume that the symmetric metric tensor is real in some gauge, and will develop the left and right handed approaches to quaternionic gauge transformations. Quaternionic gauge transformations are shown actually to require the shifting of some of Weyl's nonmetricity into torsion to define a properly transforming gauge field full curvature tensor, which is constructed as an asymmetric sum of left and right handed forms. Natural, gauge invariant, dimensionless variables are defined suitable for physics, and for use as a general formalism to describe these geometries, including General Relativity, in rather general circumstances. The geometry "self measures" these variables. Weyl's original action principle provides an example of an action rephrased in these gauge invariant variables, along with some unexpected possible insights on mechanics promoted by such a formulation of that action. Those include the torsion tensor and nonmetricity being constructed from mechanical energy-momentum. The Weyl form of action is then generalized to a quaternionic gauge field. The insights on mechanics now include spin 1/2 Dirac free fields. For physically reasonable choices of free parameters, the dimensionless Ricci tensor becomes nonnegligible in particle physics at distances much greater than the Planck length, along with limited general relativistic effects., Comment: 31 pages. Abstract

Objectives: To compare perinatal outcome and growth discordance between trichorionic triamniotic (TCTA) and dichorionic triamniotic (DCTA) or monochorionic triamniotic (MCTA) triplet pregnancies. Methods: This was a multicenter cohort study using population‐based data on triplet pregnancies from 11 Northern Survey of Twin and Multiple Pregnancy (NorSTAMP) maternity units and the Southwest Thames Region of London Obstetric Research Collaborative (STORK) multiple pregnancy cohort, for 2000–2013. Perinatal outcomes (from ≥ 24 weeks' gestation to 28 days of age), intertriplet fetal growth and birth‐weight (BW) discordance and neonatal morbidity were analyzed in TCTA compared with DCTA/MCTA pregnancies. Results: Monochorionic placentation of a pair or trio in triplet pregnancy (n = 72) was associated with a significantly increased risk of perinatal mortality (risk ratio, 2.7 (95% CI, 1.3–5.5)) compared with that in TCTA pregnancies (n = 68), due mainly to a much higher risk of stillbirth (risk ratio, 5.4 (95% CI, 1.6–18.2)), with 57% of all stillbirth cases resulting from fetofetal transfusion syndrome, while there was no significant difference in neonatal mortality (P = 0.60). The associations with perinatal mortality and stillbirth persisted when considering only pregnancies not affected by a major congenital anomaly. DCTA/MCTA triplets had lower BW and demonstrated greater BW discordance than did TCTA triplets (P = 0.049). Severe BW discordance of > 35% was 2.5‐fold higher in DCTA/MCTA compared with TCTA pregnancies (26.1% vs 10.4%), but this difference did not reach statistical significance (P = 0.06), presumably due to low numbers. Triplets in both groups were delivered by Cesarean section in over 95% of cases, at a similar gestational age (median, 33 weeks' gestation). The rate of respiratory (P = 0.28) or infectious (P = 0.08) neonatal morbidity was similar between the groups. Conclusions: Despite close antenatal surveillance, monochorionic placentation of a pair or trio in triamniotic triplet pregnancy was associated with a significantly increased stillbirth risk, mainly due to fetofetal transfusion syndrome, and with greater size discordance.
