Slow violence occurs gradually and out of sight, an attritional violence of delayed destruction not usually viewed as violence at all. Relative to more immediately perceived and recognisable forms of violence, the temporal, spatial, and sensational invisibility of slow violence can hinder efforts to act decisively towards it. Drawing on material from ethnographic research in an outer-suburban Melbourne secondary school, I examine how attending to affective dissonances experienced by students and staff led me to witness the school's first Pride Club meeting, the group's decline, and its transformation into Stand Out Club. This transformation lifts to view a move beyond the politics through which the group was initially conceived into an ethical response attentive to queer students' lives. Slow violence, conceptually, has much to offer, including the possibility for recognising and responding to slow violence with an ethics of nonviolence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

When scholars have compared "African traditional religion" and "Western science," they have often treated the terms of this comparison as racialized unitary entities, which are either radically different or somewhat similar (even as Western categories of rationality or nature remain the basis for these comparisons). This essay unsettles these assumptions by focusing on practices that are called "science" in the fields of both petroleum geology and Afro-Caribbean religion. Based on long-term ethnographic research in Trinidad, arguably the world's oldest site of commercial oil extraction, I show how internal differences between those involved in "petroleum science" and "African religion" reveal a spectrum of meanings for the word "science" centered on relations to risk. At one end of this spectrum, science conveyed ideals of stable tradition that de-risked claims to knowledge for energy sector specialists intent on securing foreign investment or for "Yorubacentric" lineages of African religion centering initiation-based authority. At this spectrum's other end, "science" foregrounded the risks of accessing hard-to-perceive forces in petroleum exploration or "spiritual work." By focusing on heterogeneous practices rather than cultural essences or ideals of rationality, I show how the ethical implications of "science" depend on differing experiences of the risks of working with subterranean powers. While petroleum surveys at my field site in Trinidad required embodied risks by laborers, geologists backgrounded these contexts of power, representing the risks of their work as a problem of scientific accuracy. Amidst well‐documented hostile migration policies, this article explores how logics of criminalisation seep into the lives of activists and citizens, providing assistance, relief, advocacy, and other forms of support to migrant people. As presences considered legal and legitimate, solidarity actors inhabit distinct subjectivities from those of people migrating informally, yet state authorities interpret their acts as problematic and subject them to intrusive modes of policing. Drawing on critical border studies and feminist geography, this article homes in on less spectacular modes of criminalisation that target them in the intimacy of their everyday lives, threatening their sense of security through opaque surveillance, attacks on their emotions, employment prospects and family life. Drawing on ethnographic research carried out among these groups in Morocco and northern France, we conceptualise this mode of criminalisation as insidious harassment, examining the entanglement of geopolitics, emotions, and the intimate at these migration pressure points. Without decentring migrants as the primary targets of violent bordering, it broadens our understanding of these regimes by drawing attention to the ways in which they viscerally target those who work to protect the rights of migrant people. The lives of sex workers feature varying issues of marginalisation. Regardless of the geographical location and surrounding culture, sex work and sex workers face a huge amount of stigma throughout the world. Over time, this prevailing stigma creates stereotypes that mainstream society reinforces through their attitude and daily discourse. Moreover, the inception of the COVID‐19 pandemic has deepened the inequalities and marginalisation experienced by this population group. This ethnographic research explores the changing dynamics of communication post‐COVID‐19 among female sex workers in the Kalighat red light district of Kolkata. To conclude, the researcher engages in audio‐recorded in‐depth interviews with 15 female sex workers chosen with the help of the snowball sampling technique. The findings of this research add to the almost non‐existent literature concerning sex work and communication and are also helpful to bureaucrats and other policymakers formulating policies for the vulnerable and marginalised. The effectiveness of healthcare depends on successful teamwork. Current understanding of teamwork in healthcare is limited due to the complexity of the context, variety of team structures, and unique demands of healthcare work. This qualitative study aimed to identify different types of healthcare teams based on their structure, membership, and function. The study used an ethnographic approach to observe five teams in an English hospital. Data were analyzed using a combined inductive-deductive approach based on the Temporal Observational Analysis of Teamwork framework. A typology was developed, consisting of five team types: structural, hybrid, satellite, responsive, and coordinating. Teams were challenged to varying degrees with staffing, membership instability, equipment shortages, and other elements of the healthcare environment. Teams varied in their ability to respond to these challenges depending on their characteristics, such as their teamworking style, location, and membership. The typology developed in this study can help healthcare organizations to better understand and design effective teams for different healthcare contexts. It can also guide future research on healthcare teams and provide a framework for comparing teams across settings. Communicating effectively, including the ability to negotiate, has been claimed to be key competencies in interprofessional practice. However, these day-to-day contributions to interprofessional teamwork are not yet sufficiently understood. The aim of this article is to explore the day-to-day interprofessional negotiations in biopsychosocial pain rehabilitation. A qualitative design with an ethnographic approach was applied to the overall study. Participant observation of interprofessional encounters and clinical encounters in a pain rehabilitation ward was undertaken in 2016 for a period of 19 weeks. Intermittent interviews with 12 professionals were conducted. Data were analyzed in an abductive process using thematic analysis. We present the results as two themes: 1) Silent conflicting interests in the office, and 2) Silent dissatisfaction with meetings. The study showed that the team members had opportunities to negotiate in interprofessional offices and meetings, while they perceived insufficient time for discussion, and their individual work being interrupted by each other in the offices. They did not discuss their dissatisfaction, but silently bargained on how to spend time together. Professionals can contribute to teamwork through silent bargains that can promote a low level of conflict and thereby preserve a good workflow. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Effective interprofessional team function is integral to high-quality care in the intensive care unit (ICU). However, little is known about how familiarity develops among teams, which may be an important antecedent to effective team function and quality care. To examine team familiarity and how it impacts ICU team function and care, we conducted an ethnographic study in four ICUs (two medical ICUs, one mixed medical-surgical ICU, and one surgical ICU) in two community hospitals and one academic medical center. We conducted 57.5 h of observation, 26 shadowing experiences, and 26 interviews across the four ICUs sequentially. We used thematic analysis to examine familiarity among the team. We found that ICU team members become familiar with their team through interpersonal, relational interactions, which involved communication, time working together, social interactions, trust, and respect. Our findings underscore the relational aspect of effective teams and demonstrate that time working together, social interactions, communication, developing trust, and respect are pathways to familiarity and optimal team function. Leveraging unique and creative ways to enhance the relational aspects of ICU teams could be an area for future research and lead to improved ICU outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Individuals suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have access to a number of sources detailing the neuropsychological effects and influence of PTSD on their day-to-day lives. While the information on the effects and influence of PTSD may be helpful in understanding the scope of the disorder, there is a lack of knowledge on how to rehabilitate musicians, specifically pianists, who experience these effects. PTSD is especially detrimental to a pianist's abilities, and consequently, without concentrated rehabilitation strategies designed to combat the effects of PTSD, pianists suffering from PTSD may forfeit professional opportunities resulting in loss of livelihood and income. After the first author's experience with PTSD, she suffered from the same effects frequently described in the literature. Through personal journalling, informed music teaching, and self-reflection, she aimed to discover whether musical rehabilitation was possible. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and Objectives Emerging evidence suggests music-based interventions can improve the well-being of people living with dementia, but little is known about the ways in which music might support dementia caregiving relationships as part of everyday life at home. This study examined music engagement in the context of daily life to identify patterns of music engagement and potential targets for the design of music-based interventions to support well-being. Research Design and Methods This ethnographic, in-home study of people living with dementia and their family and professional care partners used methods from ethnomusicology, including semistructured interviews and in-home participant observation with a focus on music engagement. Results A total of 21 dyads were purposively recruited for diversity in terms of gender, ethnicity/race/heritage, caregiving relationship, and music experiences. Despite participants' diverse music preferences, 3 distinct music engagement patterns emerged. (a) Professional care partners intentionally integrated music listening and singing into daily life as part of providing direct care. (b) Family care partners, who had prior dementia care nursing experience or family music traditions, integrated music into daily life in ways that supported their personal relationships. (c) In contrast, family care partners, who lacked dementia care experience and had high levels of caregiver burden, disengaged from prior music-making. Discussion and Implications The distinct music engagement patterns reflect different needs on the part of dyads. It is important to continue to support dyads who engage in music daily and to consider developing music-based interventions to support well-being among dyads who have become disengaged from music. Background: Children have a right to participate in matters affecting their lives. With increasing regularity, children's perspectives are being sought regarding their health and health care experiences. Though there is evidence that children find play to be one of the 'best' aspects of hospitalisation, studies rarely focus on children's perspectives on play in hospital. Methods: This qualitative study explored children's lived experiences of play during hospitalisation. Over five months, ethnographic observations were conducted on a paediatric oncology ward as well as interviews with 16 children ages 3–13 years. Results: Using interpretative phenomenological analysis, children's expressions and experiences illuminated three key points: safety and comfort are integral to children feeling able to play in hospital; the value and efficacy of play is decided by children; and that play is a way for patients to be (and be treated as) children first. Conclusion: Hospitals can only be child‐friendly if children find them friendly. Listening to and integrating children's perspectives in the discourse around the importance of play in hospital is essential for respecting children's rights and delivering person‐centred paediatric healthcare. How refugees are received in Europe depends not only on where they arrive, but above all on where they come from. This article discusses these disparities of solidarity and asks how they can be explained. It is based on collaborative ethnographic research conducted in 2022 and 2023 in Greece, the Republic of Moldova and Germany. We show that dynamics of solidarity are oriented by imaginaries of similarity that are rooted in politically and historically embedded social practices. They are complex because they are never just about the relation to the Other seeking protection, but always also about one's own identity and self-image. This is why they are often socially contested. Ideas of similarity promote solidarity, but also create distance and exclusion. In liberal societies, which are founded on a commitment to universalist principles, there is therefore a need for corrective measures to counter the logics and dynamics of solidarity based on similarity. This essay discusses island films as a possible cinematographic genre based on the case of the Faroese feature film Dreams by the Sea (Sakaris Stórá, 2017). It examines the role and meaning - as focus and locus - of the island in the award-winning Faroese production, which takes viewers to a small remote village in the northwestern Atlantic island community. Dreams by the Sea is about young lives, islandness, and future dreams. New Faroese cinema aims to de-exoticise the islands and to picture and narrate the stories that too often are - intentionally or unintentionally - kept out of the public eye. This essay is based on my extensive ethnographic research among Faroese youngsters since the beginning of the 21st century with special focus on the film landscape of contemporary island youth. This article addresses the issue of the production of space in rural and urban territories and the dialectical relation with agency and environmental activism. The data came from a collective ethnographic action research conducted at the Unified Educational Centre Uirapuru and its surroundings in the periphery of São Paulo in Brazil. In this article, I analyse the narratives which are part of interviews with a primary teacher and a community leader, one responsible for the Green Unified Educational Centre Project and the other for the vegetable garden of Vila Nova Esperança. Both subjects have become environmental agents or transformative activists. I inquire if this has to do with their memories of places and their importance of such memories for their praxis and personalities and asked about their rural past or another situation which may have produced their environmental awareness. Focusing on concepts such as production of space, place as a lived and felt space, and perezhivanie, I analyse the dynamics of transformations through these narrative interviews. In 2019, the United Nations (UN) promulgated the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration which charts the UN's global migration policy strategy, affording central importance to safety in migration. This ascendant focus on safe migration is echoed in a range of national and regional policy initiatives. Despite the policy enthusiasm for safe migration, to date, there is a dearth of critical scholarly attention to this policy shift. This paper builds on 7 years of ethnographic research on safe migration interventions in mainland Southeast Asia. Centring on the Mekong region, this paper examines two interlocking effects of safe migration policy instrumentalisation. On the one hand, safe migration discourse' spatio‐temporal underpinnings dispositions programmes to gravitate towards policy abstractions. Yet, in practice, safe migration interventions heavily depend on informal constellations of sociality, where migrants become re‐embedded as both objects and instruments of policy. Set in the peak of the so-called "European Migrant Crisis" and situated in the conflict-affected Cypriot context, this article examines Greek-Cypriot High School students' representations of Syrian refugees as they were debated in classroom discussion. Drawing on ethnographic research that took place in 2016 in a Lower Secondary School in Cyprus, we analyse the interactional dynamics through which 'bordering' processes took place, showing how different types of borders were (re)-negotiated and re-instated in the classroom. Considering the sociohistorical context of Cyprus, we also investigate how teachers' and students' understandings of borders and ethnic identity-making were reshaped by local discourses. Our analysis shows that teachers, despite prompting students to take an active stance towards Syrian refugees as part of a peacebuilding stance, mobilised ethnocentric discourses that victimised refugees, portraying them as someone whose agency is taken away from, and for whom we can speak and act. Approaching borders as social constructs, we show how the national border separating "us" and "them" was construed and reaffirmed in such discussions, and how the representation of refugees as 'the victim' functioned as a way of narrating the 'cultural fantasies' of the national self. Claiming spaces as homes indexes hierarchies. I focus on the home/away (deplasman) binary in football (soccer) where through the case of Turkey, I show how affective football fandom layers the normative charge of home versus deplasman. Home attachments and away antagonisms are formed and solidified as fans connect emotionally to stadiums and to neighbourhoods. This carries over to the national scale when (footballing) home is conceptualized as homeland. The emotionality and power-laden implications of the home/away binary leads to (the acceptance of) social exclusion but this acceptance is challenged through the very spaces of football. I refer to migrant experiences in Istanbul and to the cases of stereotypically nationalist Trabzonspor and Kurdish Amedspor to offer a novel way to conceptualize exclusion vis-à-vis the emotionality of home/away. This paper advocates the relevance of ethnography as a methodology for researching preservice teacher education. The research underpinning this paper demonstrates the importance and relevance of the ethnographic imagination for examining the formation and development of preservice teacher identity, offering a means of capturing the lived experience of learning to teach from the perspective of those entering the profession. The experience of learning to teach on three graduate-level teacher education pathways in the South of England is explored using ethnographic methods. The yearlong immersion in three different research sites and subsequent thematic analysis of the generated data gives insight into the formation of the teacher identity, foregrounding the importance of place in the experiential journey of the preservice teacher. The comprehensive data generated from this study give unique insight into how ethnographic practices can reveal the developmental process of teacher identity and have relevance for teacher educators and researchers internationally. Hybrid working, where social workers frequently work from home and use digital technology to communicate with colleagues and people using services, has become common practice in UK social work. This article presents findings from an ethnographic study of child and family social work practice in three local authorities in England. The study involved interviews and observations of practice with twenty-one social workers, over the course of six to twelve months in each site, and focus groups with young people and families who used child protection services. It used a theoretical frame of socio-materiality to examine social workers' experiences of work and their digitally mediated interactions, sense-making and relationships with colleagues, supervisors, young people and families. The study found hybrid working and digitally mediated practices had significant impacts on social workers' interactions, relationships and experiences. These impacts were particularly likely to be negative for less experienced practitioners, while some more experienced practitioners had more autonomy over their work and experienced it as more creative and meaningful. The study raises questions about how less experienced social workers can be supported and helped to develop as practitioners, in working environments where they are more often working alone. The need to decolonise social work education has become prominent in curricula developed over the past years. The curriculum in social work schools defines and shapes ways of knowing largely in terms of privileged Western knowledge. It is therefore necessary to change it and adopt pedagogical approaches more suitable for populations from different cultures. This article presents a study on a dedicated training programme for Bedouin-Arab social workers in Israel. Its pedagogies are informed by decolonised and culturally adapted social work education. This qualitative study was conducted in a teacher-researcher reflexive autoethnography approach, based on documentation of thirty-six lessons and reflections by the programme lecturers and on a thematic analysis of their experiences as social work educators. The findings present several pedagogies in terms of 'bridge': the pedagogic, the cultural sensitivity, the theory–practice and the safe space bridge. These expand the knowledge base in social work education beyond Western knowledge, demonstrating how knowledge practices unique to different cultures and identities may be adopted and adapted within it. Experts in Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT) and "Development Security Operations" (Dev-Sec-Ops) increasingly use automated tools to monitor databases, survey "targets" and identify cybersecurity threats. While the information they seek is usually freely available online, finding and extracting it requires special expertise. The extractive power of automated machines accelerates in this way the ubiquity of synoptic surveillance, while raising new ethical considerations that often obscure heuristic definitions between benevolent and malicious monitoring practices. Based on ethnographic research with OSINT and DevSecOps practitioners in the UK I identify this process analytically as an "authoritarian conundrum." I argue that reliance on automatic data extraction thus redefines power relations online and discuss its potentially despotic effects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: To explore the assumptions and values that influence nursing health assessment practices among registered general nurses in general medical and surgical wards. Design: The study was designed as a focused ethnography. Methods: A semi‐structured interview guide was used to explore prevailing nursing health assessment practices of 13 registered general nurses in an attempt to explore the assumptions and values influencing health assessment practices in the study setting. Data were analysed inductively using an interpretive qualitative content analysis method. Results: Nursing health assessment practices, and underlying assumptions and values were underpinned by a central theme of a culture of low expectation relating to nursing health assessment. The culture of low expectation was highlighted in five themes: (1) Unsystematic Assessment of Health Status, (2) Purpose of Nursing Health Assessment, (3) The Role of Nursing Educational and Regulatory Institutions, (4) Ward Ethos and (5) The Role of Organizational and Ward Leadership. Implication: The adoption of a holistic nursing health assessment framework with a clearly defined purpose of aiding nursing diagnoses can guide patient‐centred care delivery and facilitate early recognition of physiological deterioration. Patient or Public Contribution: Thirteen registered general nurses were interviewed, and the initial findings returned to them for validation. Conclusion: The potential contribution of nursing health assessment to nursing practice and patient outcomes may not be fully realized if nursing health assessment is not situated within a holistic health assessment model with a clearly defined purpose for nursing practice. This article takes an actor‐centered and bottom‐up perspective to analyze how private companies shape public responses to migration in Europe. It builds on ethnographic research with top managers and civil servants involved in visa policy, asylum reception, and immigration detention. Drawing on organizational theories about decisions and change, I analyze empirical evidence to put forward processes of international migration governance that take account of private and public actors, the implementation stage of policy‐making, the organizational and informal dynamics underpinning decisions and change within and across borders of polity, therefore adopting a transnational lens. I show three interrelated aspects: Personal contacts, informal interactions, and informal exchange that promote private companies' business while affecting change in the delivery of public policies; private companies' involvement in decision‐making and their engagement in solution‐driven processes of change; the diffusion of organizational responses to migration across national contexts, which contribute to transnational change. Objective – Miao embroidery is vital to Miao culture, representing their national identity through its patterns and colours. However, in the face of globalization and the digital age, there is an urgent need to combine tradition with modern technology to innovate and preserve Miao embroidery. Methodology – In this study, we explored the artistic characteristics of Miao embroidery by digital means and used computer design tools to refine the pattern elements and colour genes. Research methods combine qualitative and quantitative analysis, including phenomenology, ethnographic research, content analysis, questionnaires, image and colour analysis, etc. Findings – Through computer graphics software, pattern colour extraction, and innovation are realized, the integration of traditional culture and modern design is promoted, and a new way is provided for the digital protection and dissemination of intangible cultural heritage. Novelty – The research enhances the vitality and influence of Miao embroidery in global cultural diversity and includes case studies and practices of digitized intangible cultural heritage. This article centres on Syrian women's narratives and practices of intergenerational knowledge transmission on violence. Based on data collected over the course of fourteen months of ethnographic research in Istanbul and Berlin in 2022/2023, this article questions how experiences of violence are remembered vis-à-vis one's children who are raised in displacement. Syrian women's modes and practices of communicating violent experiences feature as complex negotiations and thoughtful strategies. Children play an active role in the process of intergenerational knowledge transmission. Centring on verbal and non-verbal acts of sharing of memories, this article suggests thinking of them as ambivalent balancing acts and ethical projects directed at a liveable life for one's offspring, the next generation and Syrian society within and beyond the nation's borders. The tropical grasslands of the Central Nicobar Islands have long been perceived as anthropogenic formations, which has influenced their conservation and management in the region. Despite their ecological and cultural significance, these grasslands have received limited scholarly attention, rendering them vulnerable to alternative land uses and conversion. This study aims to address these knowledge gaps through an extensive vegetation survey, soil analysis, and ethnographic research. The outcomes of the vegetation survey and soil analysis reveal that these grasslands are the result of serpentine soil formations, managed by Nicobari communities by fire. The ethnographic research reveals the cultural importance of the grassland commons and its governance through the tuhet system. Further, the study shows that the access regimes have undergone a rapid transformation during post-tsunami resettlement, endangering local instuitions and the sustainability of the grassland commons of the Nicobars. To achieve expertise, transplant surgeons in Turkiye undergo rigorous training, including medical school, residency, compulsory service, and extensive training in transplant surgery. Despite their high academic and clinical knowledge level, success in transplant surgery heavily depends on cultural competency. Through semi-structured interviews with 21 transplant surgeons specializing in kidney and liver transplants in Ankara, this study reveals how health illiteracy, culture, and folklore create significant barriers. Surgeons navigate these challenges while enduring harsh working conditions. This research highlights the critical role of cultural competency in transplant surgery, emphasizing the necessity for surgeons to understand and address the diverse cultural needs of their patients. Key findings indicate that surgeons must balance medical expertise with cultural sensitivity to deliver effective care. This study identifies four main cultural barriers: spiritual trust, family politics, health illiteracy, and subcultural incompetency. Effective transplant surgery requires a combination of theoretical proficiency and cultural awareness to meet a patient's needs and improve surgical outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: There is a knowledge-to-practice gap regarding parent-delivered pain management, and few studies have investigated parents' and nurses' participation in and acceptance of combined parent-delivered pain-alleviating interventions such as skin-to-skin contact (SSC), breastfeeding, and parental musical presence. This study investigated parents' and nurses' perceptions of and reflections on experiencing combined parent-delivered pain management. Methods: This qualitative study applies a collaborative participatory action research design using ethnographic data collection methods such as focus groups, video observations, and video-stimulated recall interviews with parents and nurses. Results: The results concern three main categories, i.e., preparation, participation, and closeness, as well as various sub-categories. Preparations were central to enabling combined parent-delivered pain management. Participation was facilitated by parental musical presence, in which parents shifted their attention toward their infant. Closeness and presence during neonatal care helped parents become active during their infant's painful procedures. Parental lullaby singing created a calm and trusting atmosphere and after the procedure, both parents and nurses felt that they had successfully supported the infant through a potentially painful procedure. Conclusions: Mental and practical preparation is central to implementing combined parent-delivered pain management. When parents and nurses explored the interventions, they found the methods feasible, promoting self-efficacy and confidence in both parents and nurses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Drawing on the data provided by the Eurobarometer on Europeans and their languages, on the Relevance theory, and ethnographic observations of contemporary Romanian society and its linguistic habits, this article develops the taxonomy of different subdivisions of multilingualism in the social continuum “pre-university studies - university studies - labor market”. Qualitative research based on ethnographic interviews and testimonies from reallife experiences provides us with a contextual understanding of the term in pre-university education and on the labor market, while quantitative research based on responses to a thematic questionnaire sent to university students of economics provides key clues about their language skills with a view to improving their linguistic performance. The case studies examined in this study will allow us to refine certain preconceived ideas about multilingualism, and to perceive accurate social and cultural patterns of this contemporary dynamic topic. Using ethnographic research from Pakistan, this paper argues that social accountability programmes that overlook the role of intermediaries in clientelistic states risk undermining the wider democratising projects they seek to support. It proposes a theory of 'isomorphic activism' that describes how these public authorities appropriate others' opportunities to participate in politics and, in the process, undermine democratic norms. Isomorphic activism is shown to be more likely when programmes are based on ideals of civil society that render activism a technical exercise, depoliticise it and blind donors to power inequalities. The challenges the paper highlights are important given calls for development programmes to change by whom and how politics is done, whilst granting local ownership to participants and demonstrating value for money. In 2021, about 281 million people worldwide reside outside of their country of birth. By taking the Guagusa Shekudad district in Ethiopia as an example, the current study aims at to assess perspectives of the community on men’s seasonal labor migration and women who were left-behind in the process of seasonal labor migration. Moreover, the study aims to identify constraints that hinder women’s participation in seasonal labor migration. For this study, a qualitative research approach, ethnographic research design, and thematic data analysis technique were employed. Different data collection techniques such as in-depth interviews, focus group discussions (FGD), participant observation, and informal conversation were used to collect first-hand ethnographic data. Accordingly, the findings of the study reveal that the local community has positive perspectives toward seasonal labor migration, migrants, and women left-behind in the process of their husband’s migration. Furthermore, men seasonal labor migrants have positive perspectives toward their left-behind wives. Likewise, left-behind women conceived their husband’s migration positively. In general, men’s seasonal labor migration is an integral part of life in the community. As a result the majority of the population has positive perceptions towards seasonal labor migration and women left-behind in the process of seasonal labor migration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Social prescribing link workers are recently introduced roles in English primary care. One of their intended functions is to support patients with conditions influenced by the wider, social determinants of health. Their main purpose is to connect people to community resources to meet their nonmedical needs. However, our research reveals that link workers provide not only connections but also what we have described as "holding" for individuals with complex needs, who lack informal networks of support or who are waiting to access services. We explore the concept of holding, its meaning and significance in this context, and consider its consequences. As part of a realist evaluation, we observed seven link workers in GP practices in England during focussed ethnographies over a 3‐week period. We took field notes and interviewed 61 patients and 93 healthcare and voluntary sector professionals. Nine to twelve months later, we carried out follow‐up interviews with forty‐one patients, seven link workers, and a link worker manager. We identified four functions of holding: supporting patients waiting for services, sustaining patients as they prepare for change, reducing the emotional burden of primary healthcare professionals, and bearing witness to patients' distress. Holding appears to be a vital but often overlooked aspect of social prescribing. Patients benefit from having a reliable and consistent person to support their emotional needs. However, similar to the impact of holding on other primary care professionals, there are unintended consequences: some link workers exceed their capacity, become overburdened, experience burnout, and leave their job. Recognizing the importance of holding and understanding its role in link workers' primary care responsibilities are critical. If holding work is accepted as a role for link workers, providing training and support to them should be prioritised to ensure successful implementation and positive outcomes for patients, link workers, and primary healthcare staff. Purpose: The aim of this study was to develop a Polish version of the Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool (CAIT-PL) questionnaire and perform CAIT-PL cultural adaptation with assessment of its psychometric properties. Methods: The original CAIT was translated into the Polish language using standard guidelines. The CAIT-PL was completed on 2 occasions by 105 participants both with and without a history of ankle sprains. Psychometric evaluation of CAIT-PL included an assessment of internal consistency, test-retest reliability, standard error of measurement, convergent and construct validity. Results: The CAIT-PL was successfully translated and adapted into Polish culture with satisfactory internal consistency (Cronbach's α = 0.83) and adequate test-retest reliability resulting in ICC2,1 = 0.89 (95% CI: 0.84–0.92). Measurement error was low (SEM = 0.76 and MDC = 2.10). Convergent validity of the CAIT-PL ranged from weak to strong using Spearman's correlation coefficient between CAIT-PL and FAOS subscales (r = 0.39–0.67; p < 0.05). Construct validity was confirmed. Conclusion: The Polish version of the Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool is a valid and reliable questionnaire for assessment of functional ankle instability among the Polish population. The Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool is broadly used to assess functional ankle instability and its severity. The Polish version of Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool (CAIT-PL) showed adequate psychometric properties. Background: Although China has a long history of using insects as food and medicine and has developed numerous associated knowledge and practices, especially in its rural and mountainous areas, systematic surveys concerning this subject are limited. In-depth ethnobiological research is needed to compile a comprehensive database of edible and medicinal insects and record the associated knowledge of these food and medicinal resources. Methods: Data on edible and medicinal insects and associated knowledge about them were collected by interviewing 216 local villagers in a mountainous territory in southeast Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China. Results: Local villagers used at least 16 edible and 9 medicinal insects, of which 4 wasp species were used in both entomophagy and medicinal practices. Parapolybia varia, Polistes olivaceus, and Anomala chamaeleon were newly recorded edible insects in China. The wasps, Euconocephalus sp., Gryllotalpa orientalis, and Cyrtotrachelus longimanus, were preferred and culturally important edible insects. Populations of Euconocephalus sp. and G. orientalis were reported to have substantially decreased in recent years. Wasps and a bamboo bee were used to treat rheumatism, while cockroaches and antlions were used to treat common cold symptoms in infants. Insect-related knowledge was positively correlated with the interviewees' age. Conclusions: Villagers have accumulated considerable local and traditional knowledge of entomophagy and entomo-therapeutic practices. However, this knowledge is in danger of being lost, which highlights the urgent need to document this information. Edible insects enrich local diets, and a more sustainable supply (such as through insect farming) could maintain local entomophagy practices. Medicinal insects are a part of local folk medicine, and pharmacological and chemical techniques could be applied to identify various biologically active substances in these insects. Co-design provides a meaningful way to engage patients in research. However, there is limited practical guidance. We used our co-design project to identify strategies for other researchers. An ethnographic case study design was used. Data included participant observation of co-design meetings, meeting minutes, analytic fieldnotes, qualitative patient interviews, and research team member self-reflections. Additionally, we got external feedback. We analyzed data iteratively. Our team included 5 patients and 6 researchers. We identified 3 strategies to include patients in co-design: (1) Deliberately build the team, from recruiting patients to specifying roles. (2) Tailor the meeting format to thoughtfully use patients' time and expertise. (3) Disrupt traditional hierarchies, to empower patients to actively participate. Researchers seeking to include patients as team members should consider: team composition and roles, leveraging meeting formats to optimize contributions and purposefully creating a culture of collaboration, so patient expertise informs the end product. Our work provides practical guidance for researchers to incorporate patient expertise in the co-design process and meaningfully involve them in their work. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The intensive care unit presents structural complexities, and the prevailing power imbalance between patients and staff can lead to health disparities. Hence, unveiling the underlying factors that give rise to and reinforce these disparities can contribute to their prevention. This study aims to shed light on the stereotypes linked to ageism and lookism, which perpetuate health disparities within the intensive care unit setting in Iran. Methods: This critical ethnographic study employed Carsepkan's approach and was carried out in intensive care units in the west of Iran from 2022 to 2023. The data collection and analysis were conducted through three interconnected stages. In the initial stage, more than 300 h of observations were made at the research site. In the subsequent stage, a horizon analysis was performed. Conversations with 14 informants were conducted in the final stage to enrich the dataset further. Then the analysis process was carried out as in the previous step to uncover an implicit culture of health disparity. To verify the validity and reliability of the study, credibility, conformability, dependability, and transferability were all taken into account. Findings: The ageism and lookism stereotypes emerged from seven main themes; youth-centric; negative ageism; age-friendliness; age-related priority; centered care for pediatric patients and families; appearance-centeredness; and a contradiction between belief and behavior. Conclusion: This critical study showed that ageism and lookism stereotypes permeated the intensive care unit's culture. These stereotypes have the potential to influence equality dynamics, as well as to foster and support health disparity in the intensive care unit. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Patients with lung cancer suffer from physical, psychosocial and particularly emotional challenges. Twenty‐five percent of patients with lung cancer are offered surgery as a potential cure. Nevertheless, 40% of surgically treated patients will experience recurrence. Paradoxically, research shows a dominant narrative of operable lung cancer patients 'being lucky', which silences other narratives about suffering, worries and emotional challenges. Aim: To explore narratives about operable lung cancer, particularly emotional reactions to illness and suffering in these narratives. Methods: A qualitative design was applied. Six women and four men diagnosed with operable lung cancer were included from one university hospital in Denmark and interviewed 1 month after surgery using active interviews. The interviews were subject to dialogical narrative analysis. The theoretical foundation is social constructivism, with socio‐narratological inspiration. Findings: A typology of three emotional narratives emerged: 'staying cool', 'staying calm' and 'staying positive'. All three types of narrative are characterised by managing emotional reactions. Staying cool is characterised by not showing emotional reactions; staying calm narratives acknowledge emotional reactions, but that they need to be managed so that they do not burden relatives; and the last, staying positive, is characterised by managing emotional reactions in a positive direction. Together this typology of three emotional narratives revealed that operable lung cancer patients are under normative pressure from these socially preferred narratives of ideal emotional reactions to lung cancer. Conclusion: A typology of three emotional narratives were identified and can be called 'feeling rules' that guide patients after lung cancer surgery to manage their emotions. Consequently, if patients do not live up to these three emotional narratives of staying cool, calm and positive, they may be socially isolated and restricted from access to support. As marginalized graduate students and faculty, we have stories to tell about our experiences within school psychology. Many of these stories center our oppression, trauma, and exclusion but some of them also center our joy and resistance. The purpose of this collaborative autoethnographic project was to create a counterspace in which we, BIWOC faculty and graduate students, could come together to engage in storytelling and build community amongst one another as a way to survive and thrive in academia. As a result of the counterspace, we are able to provide critical feedback and recommendations for school psychology programs to better support marginalized students and faculty. And we also offer critical hope and knowledge to marginalized graduate students and faculty who are currently in the field. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

What opportunities and challenges occur in reclaiming Indigenous languages within state institutions? This article considers the case of intercultural bilingual education in Ecuador. The school system is remarkable as a national-level initiative run by and for Indigenous pueblos and nationalities. Based primarily on two years of ethnographic research in the national directorate offices of the school system and in schools, I describe three challenges that have arisen for directors that are linked to national state offices and expectations. Ultimately, Kichwa is more prominent than ever even as national planning and support changes Kichwa. The case shows contradictions of institutions in language revitalization efforts. Several shifts in physiotherapy treatment of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have occurred over time. This paper aims to identify shifts in physiotherapy practice for patients with RA based on the author's work experiences from the 1980s until today at two Norwegian rheumatism hospitals, and to explore why shifts may have happened. A narrative was developed by describing events making a difference, categorizing, and ordering them with the help of narrative analysis and a sensitizing analytic lens on discourses. The storyline from the 1980s to approximately the turn of the millennium is called 'Shifts determined mainly by clinical context-driven events' which occurred in response to medical advances and physiotherapists' clinical experiences. These shifts were later justified by physiotherapists' research in the clinical context. The other storyline covers mainly the 2000s and is called 'Shifts increasingly determined by events beyond clinical physiotherapy context.' They include adjustments to further medical advances and implementation of biopsychosocial understanding of disease at the hospital, and to external research-based recommendations, health reforms, and economy. These processes have moved physiotherapy practice at the hospital from mainly providing individualized remedial and rehabilitative physiotherapy for the purpose to normalize physical function to an increasing focus on generic health measures for the purposes of health promotion and cardiovascular disease prevention. However, this shift may not fully match the complex needs presented by patients in disease remission with unrelenting fatigue and work inability and those who have multiple functional challenges and comorbidities.
