Information technology has arguably been one of the most important drivers of economic and social value in the last 50 years, enabling transformational change in virtually every aspect of society. Although the Information Systems community is engaged in significant research on IT, the reach of our findings may be limited. In this commentary, our objective is to focus the IS community's attention on the striking transformations in economic and social systems spawned by IT and to encourage more research that offers useful implications for policy. We present examples of transformations occurring in four distinct sectors of the economy and propose policy-relevant questions that need to be addressed. We urge researchers to write papers based on their findings that inform policy makers, managers, and decision makers about the issues that transformational technologies raise. Finally, we suggest a new outlet to publish these essays on the implications of transformational informational technology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The article presents a short summary and comparison of development of scientific journals, whose representatives decided to contribute to the monothematic issue dedicated to the centenary of the journal Český lid. The author stresses the similar dynamics of development of these journals in the 19th to the 21st century that can partially be reduced to the problem of scientific publication in humanities/social sciences in Central Europe. Analyzed are also other similarities and divergences in functioning of specific journals (among others, the distinct influence of chief editors upon the journals in the 19th and 20th century, the consequences of the social-political changes on science, the results of the present-day accentuation of impact factor and other forms of evaluation of the journals etc.). Recent years have seen a rapid increase in the number of tourism academic research articles, but there is as yet no system for assessing this literature because of a lack of relevant data in existing journal-evaluation databases. It is thus difficult to objectively analyze and assess the quality and academic influence of China's tourism journal articles. This is not conducive to the management and development of academic journals, and neither is it conducive to a comprehensive, objective understanding of the nature, connotation, and denotation of tourism. In this study, the core journals of tourism disciplines were screened out using Bradford's law of literature dispersion--a well-known bibhometric principle whose main application is to select and evaluate core journals. We dispensed with conventional discipline classifications and determined the number of tourism papers published in academic journals according to various related disciplines. We identified five kinds of journal evaluation indicators--the number of tourism scholarly articles, the total number of cited articles, the number of articles downloaded from the Web, and the ratio of funded papers, five-year impact factor--and ranked the core journals according to the level of the five-year impact factor. Finally, we evaluated the academic influence of these core journals and their contribution to tourism. This study used 16 word units (basic terms taken from the key words of papers) as search terms; tourism, travel, recreation, leisure, vacation, tourist, tour guide, hotel, restaurant, accommodation, scenic attraction, landscape, scenery, park, exhibition, and destination. We used these terms as search items in article titles in three influential Chinese academic journal databases; the Chinese Journal Full-text Database, VIP China Science and Technology Journal Database, and Wan Fang Digital Journal Database. For the period 2005 -2010, we retrieved 80,831 tourism research articles, which had been published in 6,367 journals. Based on bibliometrics and Bradford's law, these journals were divided into three zones; the core area, relevant area, and non-correlation area. The core area consisted of 89 journals and a collection of 26,652 articles; the relevant area contained 613 journals and a collection of 26,944 articles; and non-correlation area contained 5,664 journals and a collection of 26,976 articles. These figures were consistent with Bradford's law of literature distribution. The 89 journals in the core area are the most influential academic publications in tourism. We calculated the five journal-evaluation indicators for the 89 core journals. We then sorted the 89 journals according to their five-year impact factor. In the resulting tables, journals with a higher five-year impact factor had a greater proportion of the funded papers. Moreover, of the top 32 journals in the ranking table, 72% were included in the catalog of nationally recognized core journals, which validates the scientific rationale of the evaluation criteria used in this study. Finally, in accordance with the discipline catalog of the Ministry of Education, the 89 journals in the core area were divided into 13 categories; tourism, geography, economics, commerce and trade, agriculture, management, forestry, urban planning, architecture, statistics, sports science, other classes, and comprehensive. We calculated the number of publications in each category, the number of articles, the citation frequency, and the Web download frequency to analyze the relationship between the various disciplines and tourism and to determine their contribution to tourism. The statistics showed that three disciplines--economics, geography, and commerce and trade--were more influential than the others. When evaluated according to their academic influence and contribution to tourism, we found that the following 12 Chinese journals ranked at the top; Tourism Tribune, Human Geography, Geography and Geo-Information Science, Economic Geography, Tourism Science, Areal Research and Development, Journal of Beijing International Studies University, Inquiry into Economic Issues, Journal of And Land Resources and Environment, Commercial Research, Journal of Guilin Institute of Tourism, and Social Scientist. In addition to journals in tourism, academic journals in the fields of geography, economics, and business and trade have contributed substantially to tourism academic literature. These findings provide a reference for understanding the research status of domestic tourism and related sub-disciplines. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Improving the methodological rigour and the quality of data analysis in manuscripts submitted to journals is key to ensure the validity of scientific claims. However, there is scant knowledge of how manuscripts change throughout the review process in academic journals. Here, we examined 27 467 manuscripts submitted to four journals from the Royal Society (2006-2017) and analysed the effect of peer review on the amount of statistical content of manuscripts, i.e. one of the most important aspects to assess the methodological rigour of manuscripts. We found that manuscripts with both initial low or high levels of statistical content increased their statistical content during peer review. The availability of guidelines on statistics in the review forms of journals was associated with an initial similarity of statistical content of manuscripts but did not have any relevant implications on manuscript change during peer review. We found that when reports were more concentrated on statistical content, there was a higher probability that these manuscripts were eventually rejected by editors., (© 2022 The Authors.)

This paper addresses the issue of terms, namely Latin American, Hispanic and Latino, whose definitions are affected by social, economic, historical and ideological factors and which are at the crossroads of two or more disciplines. Definitions will be provided, using the Merriam- Webster for American English, the Oxford Dictionary for British English, and the Diccionario de la Real Academia for Spanish. The concept of ethnicity, introduced by the US Census Office in the 1970s to identify the Hispanic minority, will also be dealt with. The next section will examine the preferred choices of usage in academic journals in two broad areas, the Social Sciences on the one hand, and the Medical and Nursing professions on the others. It covers a total of 58 academic papers from two distinct periods, 2000-2005 and 2006-2010, in order to establish whether the terms are used consistently in the two broad areas, and whether there are major differences in use in the two time spans. The paper will conclude with a discussion of the findings, a reference to other activities that can be affected by the ambiguities of the definitions, and suggestions for further research. - Abstract
The current ease of online publishing has led to an excess of e-journals, all struggling to attract manuscripts and to survive, and most often without success. This fragile situation for journals means that when one of them does climb up in the quality rankings it is likely to be absorbed by a large foreign publisher. The article reflects on the academic world's dependence on international commercial databases, and questions the Spanish government's expenditure on subscriptions to them. Finally, a recent campaign conducted against Elsevier is described. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
This note aims to highlight the expanded use of the Digital Object Identifier by Spanish journals, which despite its implementation is still a pending course. The doi is a basic tool for digital document control, allowing secure permanent citations between documents. Therefore it should be considered a quality publishing factor for electronic journals. The doi system has been adopted as ISO 26324:2012, and more than 200 Spanish journals are applying it via the CrossRef consortium. Its extension affects bibliographic citation practices and several documentation areas should be interested in it. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: A new size-independent indicator of scientific journal prestige, the SJR2 indicator, is proposed. This indicator takes into account not only the prestige of the citing scientific journal but also its closeness to the cited journal using the cosine of the angle between the vectors of the two journals’ cocitation profiles. To eliminate the size effect, the accumulated prestige is divided by the fraction of the journal''s citable documents, thus eliminating the decreasing tendency of this type of indicator and giving meaning to the scores. Its method of computation is described, and the results of its implementation on the Scopus 2008 dataset is compared with those of an ad hoc Journal Impact Factor, JIF(3y), and SNIP, the comparison being made both overall and within specific scientific areas. All three, the SJR2 indicator, the SNIP indicator and the JIF distributions, were found to fit well to a logarithmic law. Although the three metrics were strongly correlated, there were major changes in rank. In addition, the SJR2 was distributed more equalized than the JIF by Subject Area and almost as equalized as the SNIP, and better than both at the lower level of Specific Subject Areas. The incorporation of the cosine increased the values of the flows of prestige between thematically close journals. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

HIGHER education research ,SCHOLARLY periodicals ,PERIODICAL publishing ,EDUCATIONAL quality ,PERIODICAL articles - Abstract
The articles published in 15 specialist academic journals – based in Australasia, Europe and North America – focusing on higher education in the years 2010 (n = 567) and 2000 (n = 388) are analysed. The analysis focuses on: the themes and issues addressed in the articles published, the methods and methodologies used, theoretical engagement, the level of analysis, and the sex, location and department of the authors. Three main trends are identified over the period 2000–2010: a striking increase in the volume of high quality higher education research being published (outside North America), the increasingly international orientation of the leading higher education research journals (outside North America), and the growing role of women as higher education researchers. This paper considers the search for the best papers by the editors of an academic journal. At each period, each editor receives a set of submissions and has to decide which paper to accept. Some editors being more demanding than others, researchers choose the quality level of their papers taking as given the composition of the editorial board. According to the specific structures of the editorial board, various equilibria may appear. We show that the journal will publish a high number of high quality papers only when the editorial board is composed by a homogeneous set of very demanding editors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: This paper first constructs a classification framework for multi-attribute evaluation methods oriented to academic journals, and then discusses the comparability of the vast majority of non-linear evaluation methods and the majority of linear evaluation methods theoretically, taking the TOPSIS method as an example and the evaluation data on agricultural journals as an exercise of validation. The analysis result shows that we should attach enough importance to the comparability of evaluation methods for academic journals; the evaluation objectives are closely related to the choice of evaluation methods, and also relevant to the comparability of evaluation methods; the specialized organizations for journal evaluation had better release the evaluation data, evaluation methods and evaluation results to the best of their abilities; only purely subjective evaluation method is of broad comparability. OPEN access publishing , *SCHOLARLY publishing , *INTERNATIONAL relations , *ELECTRONIC publishing , *PERIODICAL publishing , *PERIODICAL editors - Abstract
The electronic revolution in academic publishing brings promises as well as pitfalls. The main promises are greater efficiency, vastly greater access to the journal literature, a more equitable global sharing of intellectual resources, and hopefully improved quality. Open access-free entry to the electronic version of the journal literature-is in many ways a logical continuation of this development and will break the trend toward accelerating journal costs. But if the subscription revenue simply disappears, neither publishers nor editors will have the necessary funding to keep up peer review and other editorial routines. One alternative is to levy page charges for publication. Intermediate models are also possible, where the journal may keep its copyright to the final edited product while authors are allowed to post the final submitted version on their Web site. At the moment, open access is uncommon in international relations, but the publishers and owners of journals, including academic societies such as ISA, would be wise to think through these issues before they become acute. This symposium is a contribution to that process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper starts with a brief discussion of the traditional peer review (TPR) system of research evaluation, its role, and the criticisms levelled at it. An analysis of specific problems in economics leads to a full discussion of the Open Peer Review (OPR) system developed by the World Economics Association (WEA) and the principles behind it. The system is open in the following two respects: (a) disclosure of names of authors and reviewers; and (b) inclusivity of potential reviewers in terms of paradigmatic approaches, country, and community. The paper then discusses the applicability of the same system to other disciplines. In doing so, it stressed the aims of various evaluation systems and the possible pitfalls of rating systems. It also speculates on the future of journal publication. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Internationalization is the major aim of most Chinese academic journals in their development frameworks to attract a sufficient amount of high quality contributions. This study used Scopus to conduct a bibliometrics analysis of the present international influence of Chinese pharmaceutical journals using multiple indicators including SCImago Journal Rank (SJR) scores, the number of foreign contributions, and the number of citations by foreign author, affiliation, and journal. Five representative titles were selected including Acta Pharmacologica Sinica, Yaoxue Xuebao, Chinese Pharmaceutical Journal, Zhongguo Zhongyao Zazhi, and Chinese Journal of Natural Medicines. Results show that the present international influence of most Chinese pharmaceutical journals still remains unsatisfactory and is characterized by few foreign manuscript contributions, low SJR scores, and narrow international citations. The Chinese government has been making great efforts to boost pharmaceutical development, which provides an unprecedented chance for Chinese pharmaceutical journals to promote their international influence and reputations. Multiple approaches have been proposed based on the successful experiences of some Chinese journals with well established international reputations including constructing an international editorial board, cooperating with international and prestigious publishing groups, creating an international peer review process, and expanding international readerships. Aproximately twenty years ago the electronic journals appeared. Since then, scientific publication system has been undergoing a slow transition, though it seems that its destiny is not exactly what was predicted. Now that social sciences are changing the way they disseminate knowledge, becoming increasingly similar to the basic and applied sciences, it is important to consider whether all of those sciences publish in the same way. To answer this, various parameters related to Open Access (OA), e-journals and repositories are studied related to Physics and Chemistry, two disciplines with differences in their publication behaviour and use. From the results, it can be concluded that what differentiates Physics from Chemistry is mainly the success and functionality of their digital repositories, rather than their OA journals. This article briefly reviews the coverage of higher education in the pages of this journal since its inception. It reflects on the changing role of the academic journal during this period, on some of the related changes which have taken place in academia itself as well as changing fashions in the study of history of education. Its central arguments are that the ways in which the history of universities and higher education have been treated in History of Education are, at one and the same time, both a reflection of these developments and a commentary on them. It concludes with a call for new and wider approaches to the study of higher education which go well beyond the narrow institutional and national accounts which have dominated recent writing to reflect contemporary globalisation and the swiftly changing world in which we live now. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to identify the legacies of the Journal of Educational Administration (JEA) since its foundation in 1963 to the present (2011) and to illuminate the main contributions of the Journal to the academic field of educational administration (EA) worldwide. Design/methodology/approach – The method employed in analysing the Journal's articles was "qualitative content analysis" which includes constant comparisons for discovering patterns, emphases and themes in an array of documents. The first stage of analysis included extensive reading, sorting and searching through the Journal's abstracts resulting in the coding of categories, key words and themes. In the second stage, themes and categories were identified and compared until main themes and sub-categories in each abstract emerged. Findings – The paper traces the Journal's legacies in every decade since its foundation, and highlights the dynamic nature of this publication. Likewise, the dominance of the "empirical legacy" as compared to the other five legacies is emphasised, and the rise and fall of different topics and perspectives throughout the years are illuminated. Some thoughts about plausible future directions of the Journal conclude the paper. Originality/value – The historical review provides an opportunity to glean information about the distinctive intellectual identity of the field of EA. Likewise, reviewing existing research and scholarship in the JEA may increase our intellectual and theoretical understanding of the ways by which the scholarly boundaries of EA as a field of study have been shaped and reshaped, after all, JEA has long been an outlet for hundreds of works from the four corners of the earth. Is there a uniform set of mechanisms to ensure the quality of scientific papers before publication? What are the most common criteria used to evaluate the quality of academic articles? The aim of this paper is to answer these questions. The paper was divided in two sections, a literature review, and an empirical research on the criteria used by 189 journals indexed in the Social Sciences Citation Index. The findings show that there appears to be little attention paid to the peer review process, given that the majority of the journals do not provide any information on this topic to the public. Moreover, only a small proportion of journals use structured guidelines to help reviewers in evaluating manuscripts. It was also observed that these checklists use both scientific evaluation criteria and criteria relating to ethics. The most used criteria are related to the originality of the paper, the quality of methodology and the quality of literature review. The conclusion is that there is no consistent method for assessing the quality of the manuscripts. However, due to the limited availability of data, we are cautious when stating this. New media entered and continuously alter our everyday lives and routines, and even societies at the macro level, in the very extensive and nonreversible way (especially since the so-called 'dot.com Revolution' in l990s). They affect a current nature of communication and media research while leaving academics with challenges on theoretical paradigms and practical implications of new media technologies. New media gave birth to emerging interdisciplinary academic field new media studies (sometimes also referred to as Internet, digital or cyberculture studies) which has sought its legitimacy as an independent scholarly discourse since I 990s. The study presents the inquiry into research trends within new media studies, with major focus on 2006-2010. The article proves that new media studies have moved from its initial uncritical fascination by new media technologies (with main focus on the 'newness' in new media and concepts such as interactivity) to the stage where a broad range of new media issues in its complexity are addressed. Tracing the face of new media studies in last five years proves pluralistic position on theoretical perspective and methodological approaches. Study examines five academic media-oriented e-joumals and its findings show that new media research has moved from a pure observation and documentation of diffusion of the new phenomenon worldwide to analysis relying on a broad spectrum of methodological approaches, originally grounded in diverse humanities and social sciences. These commemorative notes on the fiftieth anniversary of Caribbean Studies are an initial endeavor to discuss academic journals published by universities in the Caribbean region. The first part deals with the development of higher education institutions and the creation of university-based academic journals in the Hispanic-and English-speaking Caribbean. The next section addresses the development of the first academic journals with a regional perspective—Caribbean Quarterly and Social and Economic Studies—until their becoming peer-reviewed journals. In the third part, the article centers on the origin and development of Caribbean Studies, including also a bibliometric analysis of several aspects, such as the the origin of authors, fields of study, and others. The essay closes with a rapid view of the present panorama of journals dedicated to the Caribbean and with a brief conclusion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We recommend that an auction market replace the current system for submitting academic papers and show a strict Pareto-improvement in equilibrium. Besides the benefit of speed, this mechanism increases the average quality of articles and journals and rewards editors and referees for their effort. The 'academic dollar' proceeds from papers sold at auction go to authors, editors and referees of cited articles. This nonpecuniary income indicates the academic impact of an article-facilitating decisions on tenure and promotion. This auction market does not require more work of editors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PERIODICAL publishing ,PUBLICATIONS ,JOURNALISM ,COMMUNICATION policy ,PROFESSIONALIZATION ,HISTORY ,PERIODICALS - Abstract
In almost 45 years of the existence of scientific journals having to do with the fields of journalism and communication in Brazil, such journals have passed through four distinct stages: the first, consisting of pioneering journals in the field (1965-1975); the second, consisting of the institutionalisation of the national project (1975-1990); the third, consisting of mass diversification of such journals (1990-1998); and the fourth, consisting of the professionalisation of such journals (1998-2008). The dramatic improvement in the quality of such journals, which could be observed during the period under review, can be attributed to five associated movements: (a) the creation of public policies to support the publication of scientific journals; (b) the foundation of the Brazilian Association of Scientific Editors; (c) the consolidation of the programmes of postgraduate studies in communication; (d) the diversification of scientific societies in the areas of journalism and communication; and (e) the establishment of programmes for the evaluation of scientific journals. In this article, an overview is presented of the history of Brazilian scientific journals in the fields of journalism and communication. The article concludes by enumerating the challenges which have to be overcome, for the full integration of the journals into the global market to take place. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: A size-independent indicator of journals’ scientific prestige, the SCImago Journal Rank (SJR) indicator, is proposed that ranks scholarly journals based on citation weighting schemes and eigenvector centrality. It is designed for use with complex and heterogeneous citation networks such as Scopus. Its computation method is described, and the results of its implementation on the Scopus 2007 dataset is compared with those of an ad hoc Journal Impact Factor, JIF(3y), both generally and within specific scientific areas. Both the SJR indicator and the JIF distributions were found to fit well to a logarithmic law. While the two metrics were strongly correlated, there were also major changes in rank. In addition, two general characteristics were observed. On the one hand, journals’ scientific influence or prestige as computed by the SJR indicator tended to be concentrated in fewer journals than the quantity of citation measured by JIF(3y). And on the other, the distance between the top-ranked journals and the rest tended to be greater in the SJR ranking than in that of the JIF(3y), while the separation between the middle and lower ranked journals tended to be smaller. Journal prices have long been a matter of controversy. Lacking has been any objective information on costs that could be used to judge whether price increases have been justified by rising costs. Using a rare, publicly available set of data for the American Economic Review, the premier journal in economics, this article normalizes costs for number of issues per annum, number of pages per issue, and print quantities per issue to construct an index for the costs of producing this journal. It shows that costs have in fact increased more slowly than the general rate of inflation and argues that the cost experience of this journal provides a reference point for academic journals generally. In her keynote, librarian and professor Dorothea Salo challenged attendees at the 2016 North Carolina Serials Conference to consider how the profession and work of librarianship would be impacted if scholarly output were universally online and available as open access. The scope of her supposition was global and comprehensive, encompassing born digital and digitized materials and scholarly information of all types. What about libraries and librarianship would be different? What work would librarians still be doing, and what work would librarians stop doing? [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abstract: This paper develops a simple model of the market for academic publications in business and economics. The supply of papers is presented as the outcome of a game between researchers and schools’ deans under imperfect information about the quality of a given paper. The demand for papers brings into the picture the editorial selection process. After defining the equilibrium of this market, the model allows us to study the consequences of more powerful incentives for publication in major journals. It turns out that too large bonuses, as implemented by business schools in the recent years, might bring about several unpleasant consequences, such as a drop in the quality of major journals, a decline in the number of top-tier publications realized by leading research institutions and a fall in the expected compensation of top researchers. In this article, we examine the role of academic journals in the development of the field. In particular we focus on JEAH as an illustrative example of an academic journal that has, from the outset, reflected and portrayed intellectual developments in educational administration and history. We argue that academic journals, in effect, are one of the most visible and ostensibly powerful forms of knowledge production that can be a highly political and contested process. Moreover, attempts over the past few decades to utilise qualitative or quantitative measures to weigh and measure the (apparent) status and impact of academic journals serve to invoke ratings wars that can only rebound to the disadvantage of scholarship in discipline of education and the field of educational administration and history. Prior research shows that article reader counts (i.e. saves) on the online reference manager, Mendeley, correlate to future citations. There are currently no evidenced-based distribution strategies that have been shown to increase article saves on Mendeley. We conducted a 4-week randomized controlled trial to examine how promotion of article links in a novel online cross-publisher distribution channel (TrendMD) affect article saves on Mendeley. Four hundred articles published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research were randomized to either the TrendMD arm (n = 200) or the control arm (n = 200) of the study. Our primary outcome compares the 4-week mean Mendeley saves of articles randomized to TrendMD versus control. Articles randomized to TrendMD showed a 77% increase in article saves on Mendeley relative to control. The difference in mean Mendeley saves for TrendMD articles versus control was 2.7, 95% CI (2.63, 2.77), and statistically significant (p

This article builds upon existing research, which has been mapping and analysing the field of higher education research, and, in particular on the analysis of the articles (n=406) in 17 specialist higher education journals published in the English language outside of North America during the year 2000. It extends that analysis by examining the citations (n=10,065) given in the articles. This provides answers to the questions of who cites whom, and which authors and articles or books are most cited overall. The main conclusion of the analysis, however is that the developing field of higher education research appears very diverse and fragmented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
