Convolution is a compute-intensive operation placed at the heart of Convolution Neural Networks (CNNs). It has led to the development of many high-performance algorithms, such as Im2col-GEMM, Winograd, and Direct-Convolution. However, the comparison of different convolution algorithms is an error-prone task as it requires specific data layouts and system resources. Failure to address these requirements might lead to unwanted time penalties. Thus, considering all processing steps within convolution algorithms is essential to comprehensively evaluate and fairly compare their performance. Furthermore, most known convolution benchmarking adopts ad-hoc testing suites with limited coverage and handmade operations. This paper proposes ConvBench, a primitive-level benchmark for the evaluation and comparison of convolution algorithms. It assesses 9243 convolution operations derived from 1097 real-world deep learning models, resulting in performance and execution breakdown graphs for a detailed evaluation. ConvBench capability is evaluated across the Sliced Convolution (SConv) algorithm. The experiments showed results faster than Im2col-GEMM in 93.6% of the convolutions. However, the use of ConvBench allowed the delving into the remaining 6.4% underperforming convolutions, uncovering a critical slowdown of 79.5% on average of SConv's packing step. Precision in identifying nanometer-scale device-killer defects is crucial in both semiconductor research and development as well as in production processes. The effectiveness of existing ML-based approaches in this context is largely limited by the scarcity of data, as the production of real semiconductor wafer data for training these models involves high financial and time costs. Moreover, the existing simulation methods fall short of replicating images with identical noise characteristics, surface roughness and stochastic variations at advanced nodes. We propose a method for generating synthetic semiconductor SEM images using a diffusion model within a limited data regime. In contrast to images generated through conventional simulation methods, SEM images generated through our proposed DL method closely resemble real SEM images, replicating their noise characteristics and surface roughness adaptively. Our main contributions, which are validated on three different real semiconductor datasets, are: i) proposing a patch-based generative framework utilizing DDPM to create SEM images with intended defect classes, addressing challenges related to class-imbalance and data insufficiency, ii) demonstrating generated synthetic images closely resemble real SEM images acquired from the tool, preserving all imaging conditions and metrology characteristics without any metadata supervision, iii) demonstrating a defect detector trained on generated defect dataset, either independently or combined with a limited real dataset, can achieve similar or improved performance on real wafer SEM images during validation/testing compared to exclusive training on a real defect dataset, iv) demonstrating the ability of the proposed approach to transfer defect types, critical dimensions, and imaging conditions from one specified CD/Pitch and metrology specifications to another, thereby highlighting its versatility., Comment: 8 pages, 11 figures, to be presented at 2024 International Symposium ELMAR, and published by IEEE in the conference proceedings

Multi-object tracking (MOT) endeavors to precisely estimate the positions and identities of multiple objects over time. The prevailing approach, tracking-by-detection (TbD), first detects objects and then links detections, resulting in a simple yet effective method. However, contemporary detectors may occasionally miss some objects in certain frames, causing trackers to cease tracking prematurely. To tackle this issue, we propose BUSCA, meaning `to search', a versatile framework compatible with any online TbD system, enhancing its ability to persistently track those objects missed by the detector, primarily due to occlusions. Remarkably, this is accomplished without modifying past tracking results or accessing future frames, i.e., in a fully online manner. BUSCA generates proposals based on neighboring tracks, motion, and learned tokens. Utilizing a decision Transformer that integrates multimodal visual and spatiotemporal information, it addresses the object-proposal association as a multi-choice question-answering task. BUSCA is trained independently of the underlying tracker, solely on synthetic data, without requiring fine-tuning. Through BUSCA, we showcase consistent performance enhancements across five different trackers and establish a new state-of-the-art baseline across three different benchmarks. A coupling between Earths rotation and orbital angular momentum (OAM), known as the Sagnac effect, is observed in entangled neutrons produced using a spin echo interferometer. After correction for instrument systematics the measured coupling is within 5% of theory, with an uncertainty of 7.2%. The OAM in our setup is transverse to the propagation direction and scales linearly with wavelength (4 A - 12.75 A), hence the coupling can be varied, without mechanically rotating the device. Therefore, the systematic error is lower than in previous experiments. The detected transverse OAM of our beam corresponds to 4098 +- 295 hbar A-1, 5 orders of magnitude lower than in previous neutron experiments, thereby demonstrating the feasibility of using the Sagnac effect to definitively measure neutron OAM and paving the way towards observations of the quantum Sagnac effect

The primary objective is to offer consistent support to patients outside traditional therapy sessions by analyzing audio messages to detect emotions and generate appropriate responses. The solution focuses on Portuguese-speaking users, ensuring that the system is linguistically and culturally relevant. This system aims to complement and enhance the psychological follow-up process conducted by therapists, providing immediate and accessible assistance, especially in emergency situations where rapid response is crucial. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed system, highlighting its potential in applications of psychological support.

Rapid advancements in machine learning (ML) are transforming materials science by significantly speeding up material property calculations. However, the proliferation of ML approaches has made it challenging for scientists to keep up with the most promising techniques. This paper presents an empirical study on Geometric Graph Neural Networks for 3D atomic systems, focusing on the impact of different (1) canonicalization methods, (2) graph creation strategies, and (3) auxiliary tasks, on performance, scalability and symmetry enforcement. Our findings and insights aim to guide researchers in selecting optimal modeling components for molecular modeling tasks.

We discuss the effect of rigid rotation on critical temperatures of deconfinement and chiral transitions in the linear sigma model coupled to quarks and the Polyakov loop. We point out the essential role of the causality condition, which requires that any point of the system should rotate slower than the velocity of light. We show that imposing this physical requirement leads to inhibition of the splitting between the chiral and confining transitions, which becomes negligibly small ($\Delta T \sim 1$~MeV or less) for experimentally relevant, slow angular velocities $\Omega \sim 10$~MeV of a $(5-10)$~fm-sized systems. Moreover, the boundedness of the system has a much bigger effect on temperature splitting than the rotation itself: the splitting reaches 10~MeV in a small, one-fermi-sized non-rotating system. The temperature splitting may, however, become enhanced in an academic limit of ultra-relativistic regimes when the boundary of the system rotates at near-to-light velocities., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures

The emergence of large language models (LLMs) has revolutionized the way we interact with graphs, leading to a new paradigm called GraphLLM. Despite the rapid development of GraphLLM methods in recent years, the progress and understanding of this field remain unclear due to the lack of a benchmark with consistent experimental protocols. To bridge this gap, we introduce GLBench, the first comprehensive benchmark for evaluating GraphLLM methods in both supervised and zero-shot scenarios. GLBench provides a fair and thorough evaluation of different categories of GraphLLM methods, along with traditional baselines such as graph neural networks. Through extensive experiments on a collection of real-world datasets with consistent data processing and splitting strategies, we have uncovered several key findings. Firstly, GraphLLM methods outperform traditional baselines in supervised settings, with LLM-as-enhancers showing the most robust performance. However, using LLMs as predictors is less effective and often leads to uncontrollable output issues. We also notice that no clear scaling laws exist for current GraphLLM methods. In addition, both structures and semantics are crucial for effective zero-shot transfer, and our proposed simple baseline can even outperform several models tailored for zero-shot scenarios. It has been known for many years that methods inspired by string theory, such as the worldline formalism, allow one to write down integral representations that combine large numbers of Feynman diagrams of different topologies. However, to make this fact useful for state-of-the-art calculations one has to confront non-standard integration problems where neither the known integration techniques for Feynman diagrams nor algebraic manipulation programs are of much help. Entanglement asymmetry is a measure of symmetry breaking in quantum subsystems, inspired by quantum information theory, particularly suited to study out-of-equilibrium states. We study the entanglement asymmetry of a class of excited "coherent states" in conformal quantum field theories with a U(1) symmetry, employing Euclidean path-integral methods with topological symmetry defects and the replica formalism. We compute, at leading order in perturbation theory, the asymmetry for a variety of subsystems, including finite spherical subregions in flat space, in finite volume, and at positive temperature. We also study its Lorentzian time evolution, showcasing the dynamical restoration of the symmetry due to thermalization, as well as the presence of a quantum Mpemba effect. Our results are universal, and apply in any number of dimensions. In this paper, we investigate joint unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) formation and resource allocation optimization for communication-assisted three-dimensional (3D) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) sensing. We consider a system consisting of two UAVs that perform bistatic interferometric SAR (InSAR) sensing for generation of a digital elevation model (DEM) and transmit the radar raw data to a ground station (GS) in real time. To account for practical 3D sensing requirements, we use non-conventional sensing performance metrics, such as the SAR interferometric coherence, i.e., the local cross-correlation between the two co-registered UAV SAR images, the point-to-point InSAR relative height error, and the height of ambiguity, which together characterize the accuracy with which the InSAR system can determine the height of ground targets. Our objective is to jointly optimize the UAV formation, speed, and communication power allocation for maximization of the InSAR coverage while satisfying energy, communication, and InSAR-specific sensing constraints. To solve the formulated non-smooth and non-convex optimization problem, we divide it into three sub-problems and propose a novel alternating optimization (AO) framework that is based on classical, monotonic, and stochastic optimization techniques. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is validated through extensive simulations and compared to several benchmark schemes. Furthermore, our simulation results highlight the impact of the UAV-GS communication link on the flying formation and sensing performance and show that the DEM of a large area of interest can be mapped and offloaded to ground successfully, while the ground topography can be estimated with centimeter-scale precision. Lastly, we demonstrate that a low UAV velocity is preferable for InSAR applications as it leads to better sensing accuracy.

Any homogeneous expanding Ricci soliton is known to be isometric to a Lie subgroup of the solvable part of the Iwasawa decomposition associated with a symmetric space of non-compact type, with the metric induced as a submanifold. In this paper, we classify and analyze the geometry of such Lie subgroups with Ricci soliton induced metric when the symmetric spaces are complex hyperbolic spaces.

Galactic stellar haloes are largely composed of the remnants of galaxies accreted during the assembly of their host galaxies, and hence their properties reflect the mass spectrum and post-accretion evolution of their satellites. As the nature of dark matter (DM) can affect both, we explore how the properties of the accreted stellar component vary across cold (CDM), warm (WDM) and self-interacting (SIDM) models. We do this by studying accreted stellar populations around eight MW-mass haloes using cosmological hydrodynamical simulations based on the EAGLE galaxy formation model, in which we find that the accreted stellar mass remains similar across models. Contrary to WDM, which only presents minor differences relative to CDM, the distribution of accreted stars in SIDM changes significantly within $0.05R_{200}$ ($10\,\mathrm{kpc}$). The central density reduces to $\langle \rho^{\mathrm{SIDM}}_{\mathrm{exsitu}} / \rho^{\mathrm{CDM}}_{\mathrm{exsitu}} \rangle = 0.3$ and has a shallower radial dependence, with logarithmic density slopes of $\langle \alpha_{\mathrm{SIDM}} \rangle = -1.4$ vs $\langle \alpha_{\mathrm{CDM}} \rangle = -1.7$. Additionally, stars are on more tangential orbits than their CDM counterparts, with a change in the velocity anisotropy of $\langle \Delta \beta \rangle = - 0.2$. Finally, SIDM stellar haloes have the largest number and prominence of overdensities in radius vs radial velocity space. This is due to a combination of shorter stellar halo progenitor merging timescales and shallower host potentials, with the former resulting in less time for dynamical friction and radialisation to operate. The Ehrhart polynomial and Ehrhart series count lattice points in integer dilations of a lattice polytope. We introduce and study a $q$-deformation of the Ehrhart series, based on the notions of harmonic spaces and Macaulay's inverse systems for coordinate rings of finite point configurations. We conjecture that this $q$-Ehrhart series is a rational function, and introduce and study a bigraded algebra whose Hilbert series matches the $q$-Ehrhart series. Precision optical measurements of the electron-spin precession of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond form the basis of numerous applications. The most sensitivity-demanding applications, such as femtotesla magnetometry, require the ability to measure changes in GHz spin transition frequencies at the sub-millihertz level, corresponding to a fractional resolution of better than 10^{-12}. Here we study the impact of microwave (MW) phase noise on the response of an NV sensor. Fluctuations of the phase of the MW waveform cause undesired rotations of the NV spin state. These fluctuations are imprinted in the optical readout signal and, left unmitigated, are indistinguishable from magnetic field noise. We show that the phase noise of several common commercial MW generators results in an effective pT s^{1/2}-range noise floor that varies with the MW carrier frequency and the detection frequency of the pulse sequence. The data are described by a frequency domain model incorporating the MW phase noise spectrum and the filter-function response of the sensing protocol. For controlled injection of white and random-walk phase noise, the observed NV magnetic noise floor is described by simple analytic expressions that accurately capture the scaling with pulse sequence length and the number of pi pulses. We outline several strategies to suppress the impact of MW phase noise and implement a version, based on gradiometry, that realizes a >10-fold suppression. Rank-rank regressions are widely used in economic research to evaluate phenomena such as intergenerational income persistence or mobility. However, when covariates are incorporated to capture between-group persistence, the resulting coefficients can be difficult to interpret as such. We propose the conditional rank-rank regression, which uses conditional ranks instead of unconditional ranks, to measure average within-group income persistence. This property is analogous to that of the unconditional rank-rank regression that measures the overall income persistence. The difference between conditional and unconditional rank-rank regression coefficients therefore can measure between-group persistence. We develop a flexible estimation approach using distribution regression and establish a theoretical framework for large sample inference. An empirical study on intergenerational income mobility in Switzerland demonstrates the advantages of this approach. The study reveals stronger intergenerational persistence between fathers and sons compared to fathers and daughters, with the within-group persistence explaining 62% of the overall income persistence for sons and 52% for daughters. We study the evidence for dark energy (DE) evolution at low redshift, using baryonic acoustic oscillations (BAOs) from the DESI Early Data Release, Pantheon+ Type Ia supernovae (SNe-Ia), and redshift space distortions (RSDs) to constrain cosmological parameters. Furthermore, we make use of the angular acoustic scale to analyse the effect of introducing condensed CMB information on the cosmological parameters informing DE evolution. The analysis is divided into cases based on the variability of priors inferred from early-time physics. Using a quadratic parametrisation, $X(z)$, for DE density, we find evidence for DE evolution in all cases, both with and without the angular acoustic scale. We reconstruct $X(z)$ using best fit parameters and find that DE density starts to exhibit dynamical behaviour at $z \sim 0.5 $, assuming negative values beyond $z\sim 1.5$. The data show no significant preference for $X(z)$CDM over a $\Lambda$CDM, with both models performing equally well according to our chosen metrics of reduced $\chi^2$ and the Durbin-Watson statistic.

We consider the setting of either a general non-local branching particle process or a general non-local superprocess, in both cases, with and without immigration. Under the assumption that the mean semigroup has a Perron-Frobenious type behaviour for the immigrated mass, as well as the existence of second moments, we consider necessary and sufficient conditions that ensure limiting distributional stability. More precisely, our first main contribution pertains to proving the asymptotic Kolmogorov survival probability and Yaglom limit for critical non-local branching particle systems and superprocesses under a second moment assumption on the offspring distribution. Our results improve on existing literature by removing the requirement of bounded offspring in the particle setting [21] and generalising [43] to allow for non-local branching mechanisms. Our second main contribution pertains to the stability of both critical and sub-critical non-local branching particle systems and superprocesses with immigration. At criticality, we show that the scaled process converges to a Gamma distribution under a necessary and sufficient integral test. At subcriticality we show stability of the process, also subject to an integral test. In these cases, our results complement classical results for (continuous-time) Galton-Watson processes with immigration and continuous-state branching processes with immigration; see [22,40,42,48,51], among others. In the setting of superprocesses, the only work we know of at this level of generality is summarised in [34]. Relativistic exact two-component coupled-cluster calculations of molecular sensitivity factors for nuclear Schiff moments (NSMs) are reported. We focus on molecules containing heavy nuclei, especially octupole-deformed nuclei. Analytic relativistic coupled-cluster gradient techniques are used and serve as useful tools for identifying candidate molecules that sensitively probe for physics beyond the Standard Model in the hadronic sector. Notably, these tools enable straightforward ``black-box'' calculations. Two competing chemical mechanisms that contribute to the NSM are analyzed, illuminating the physics of ligand effects on NSM sensitivity factors.

We study the existence and concentration of positive and nodal solutions to a Schr\"odinger equation in the presence of a shrinking self-focusing core of arbitrary shape. Via a suitable rescaling, the concentration gives rise to a limiting profile that solves a nonautonomous elliptic semilinear equation with a sharp sign change in the nonlinearity. Despite the remarkable progress in emerging solar cell technologies such as hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites, there are still significant limitations related to the stability of the devices and their non-ideal electrical behavior under certain external stimuli. We present a conceptual framework for characterizing photovoltaic devices by integrating cyclic voltammetry (CV) and impedance spectroscopy (IS). This framework is constructed from a microscopic, multi-mode perspective that explicitly accounts for drift, diffusion, displacement, and memory contributions. We derive comprehensive analytical expressions for current-voltage relationships and complex admittance. Our model reveals the inseparable connection between hysteresis behaviors in current-voltage characteristics observed in CV and the apparent capacitive and inductive behaviors seen in IS spectral analysis. We demonstrate how CV and IS naturally complement each other, providing a deeper microscopic understanding of device performance and limitations. Additionally, we establish the relationship between intrinsic material parameters and experimentally accessible extrinsic parameters such as light intensity, temperature, DC bias, voltage amplitude, and frequency. The problem of an optimal mapping between Hilbert spaces $IN$ and $OUT$, based on a series of density matrix mapping measurements $\rho^{(l)} \to \varrho^{(l)}$, $l=1\dots M$, is formulated as an optimization problem maximizing the total fidelity $\mathcal{F}=\sum_{l=1}^{M} \omega^{(l)} F\left(\varrho^{(l)},\sum_s B_s \rho^{(l)} B^{\dagger}_s\right)$ subject to probability preservation constraints on Kraus operators $B_s$. For $F(\varrho,\sigma)$ in the form that total fidelity can be represented as a quadratic form with superoperator $\mathcal{F}=\sum_s\left\langle B_s\middle|S\middle| B_s \right\rangle$ (either exactly or as an approximation) an iterative algorithm is developed to find the global maximum. The result comprises in $N_s$ operators $B_s$ that collectively form an $IN$ to $OUT$ quantum channel $A^{OUT}=\sum_s B_s A^{IN} B_s^{\dagger}$. The work introduces two important generalizations of unitary learning: 1. $IN$/$OUT$ states are represented as density matrices. 2. The mapping itself is formulated as a general quantum channel. This marks a crucial advancement from the commonly studied unitary mapping of pure states $\phi_l=\mathcal{U} \psi_l$ to a general quantum channel, what allows us to distinguish probabilistic mixture of states and their superposition. An application of the approach is demonstrated on unitary learning of density matrix mapping $\varrho^{(l)}=\mathcal{U} \rho^{(l)} \mathcal{U}^{\dagger}$, in this case a quadratic on $\mathcal{U}$ fidelity can be constructed by considering $\sqrt{\rho^{(l)}} \to \sqrt{\varrho^{(l)}}$ mapping, and on a general quantum channel of Kraus rank $N_s$, where quadratic on $B_s$ fidelity is an approximation -- a quantum channel is then built as a hierarchy of unitary mappings. The most accurate neutron lifetime measurements now use the material or magnetic traps of ultracold neutrons (UCN). The precision of these experiments is determined by the accuracy of estimating the neutron loss rate. In material UCN traps the main source of neutron losses is the absorption by trap walls. In this paper we analyze the standard methods and their approximations for the calculation of UCN absorption rate by the walls of material traps. We emphasize the approximations used both in the standard analytical formulas and in the numerical Monte-Carlo simulations. For the two simplest trap geometries, rectangular and cylindrical, we obtain precise analytical formulas for this absorption rate and compare them with the standard estimation methods. The difference turned out to be considerable and especially important for the size extrapolation procedure, always used in the standard estimates of UCN losses. Solid-state quantum emitters are essential sources of single photons, and enhancing their emission rates is of paramount importance for applications in quantum communications, computing, and metrology. One approach is to couple quantum emitters with resonant photonic nanostructures, where the emission rate is enhanced due to the Purcell effect. Dielectric nanoantennas are promising as they provide strong emission enhancement compared to plasmonic ones, which suffer from high Ohmic loss. Here, we designed and fabricated a dielectric Fano resonator based on a pair of silicon (Si) ellipses and a disk, which supports the mode hybridization between quasi-bound-states-in-the-continuum (quasi-BIC) and Mie resonance. We demonstrated the performance of the developed resonant system by interfacing it with single photon emitters (SPEs) based on nitrogen-vacancy (NV-) centers in nanodiamonds (NDs). We observed that the interfaced emitters have a Purcell enhancement factor of ~10, with sub-ns emission lifetime and a polarization contrast of 9. We present a novel method for explainable vertebral fracture assessment (XVFA) in low-dose radiographs using deep neural networks, incorporating vertebra detection and keypoint localization with uncertainty estimates. We incorporate Genant's semi-quantitative criteria as a differentiable rule-based means of classifying both vertebra fracture grade and morphology. Unlike previous work, XVFA provides explainable classifications relatable to current clinical methodology, as well as uncertainty estimations, while at the same time surpassing state-of-the art methods with a vertebra-level sensitivity of 93% and end-to-end AUC of 97% in a challenging setting. Geographic dispersion of depositors, borrowers, and banks may prevent funding from flowing to high loan demand areas, limiting credit access. Using bank-county-year level data, we provide evidence of the geographic imbalance of deposits and loans and develop a methodology for investigating the contribution to this imbalance of branch networks, market power, and scope economies. Results are based on a novel measure of imbalance and estimation of a structural model of bank competition that admits interconnections across locations and between deposit and loan markets. We devise a Floquet theory of longitudinal and dispersive readout in circuit QED. By studying qubits coupled to cavity photons and driven at the resonance frequency of the cavity $\omega_{\rm r}$, we establish a universal connection between the qubit AC Stark shift and the longitudinal and dispersive coupling to photons. We find that the longitudinal coupling $g_\parallel$ is controlled by the slope of the AC Stark shift as function of the driving strength $A_{\rm q}$, while the dispersive shift $\chi$ depends on its curvature. The two quantities become proportional to each other in the weak drive limit ($A_{\rm q}\rightarrow 0$). Our approach unifies the adiabatic limit ($\omega_{\rm r}\rightarrow 0$) -- where $g_\parallel$ is generated by the static spectrum curvature (or quantum capacitance) -- with the diabatic one, where the static spectrum plays no role. We derive analytical results supported by exact numerical simulations. Occupancy Grids have been widely used for perception of the environment as they allow to model the obstacles in the scene, as well as free and unknown space. Recently, there has been a growing interest in the unknown space due to the necessity of better understanding the situation. Although Occupancy Grids have received numerous extensions over the years to address emerging needs, currently, few works go beyond the delimitation of the unknown space area and seek to incorporate additional information. This work builds upon the already well-established LiDAR-based Dynamic Occupancy Grid to introduce a complementary Categorized Grid that conveys its estimation using semantic labels while adding new insights into the possible causes of unknown space. The proposed categorization first divides the space by occupancy and then further categorizes the occupied and unknown space. Occupied space is labeled based on its dynamic state and reliability, while the unknown space is labeled according to its possible causes, whether they stem from the perception system's inherent constraints, limitations induced by the environment, or other causes. To address the need of coverage enhancement in the fifth generation (5G) of wireless cellular telecommunications, while taking into account possible bottlenecks related to deploying fiber based backhaul (e.g., required cost and time), the 3rd generation partnership project (3GPP) proposed in Release 18 the concept of network-controlled repeaters (NCRs). NCRs enhance previous radio frequency (RF) repeaters by exploring beamforming transmissions controlled by the network through side control information. In this context, this paper introduces the concept of NCR. Furthermore, we present a system level model that allows the performance evaluation of an NCR-assisted network. Finally, we evaluate the network deployment impact on the performance of NCR-assisted networks. As we show, with proper network planning, NCRs can boost the signal to interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) of the user equipments (UEs) in a poor coverage of a macro base station. The celebrated Ott-Antonsen ansatz for coupled oscillators provides a useful framework to work with deterministic systems in the thermodynamic limit, but remains just an approximation for stochastic models. In this paper, I construct a general mesoscopic description of finite-sized populations of stochastic coupled oscillators and apply it to study the stochastic Kuramoto model. From such a mesoscopic description it is possible to obtain the natural, multiplicative fluctuations of the oscillator ensemble. The analysis allows one to derive highly accurate, closed expressions for the stochastic Kuramoto model's order parameter for the first time. Moreover, it is possible to get novel insights into the system's fluctuations and the synchronization transition's critical exponents which were inaccessible before.

The development of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for medical imaging has provided a leap forward in diagnosis, providing a safe, non-invasive alternative to techniques involving ionising radiation exposure for diagnostic purposes. It was described by Block and Purcel in 1946, and it was not until 1980 that the first clinical application of MRI became available. Since that time the MRI has gone through many advances and has altered the way diagnosing procedures are performed. Due to its ability to improve constantly, MRI has become a commonly used practice among several specialisations in medicine. Particularly starting 0.55T and 7T MRI technologies have pointed out enhanced preservation of image detail and advanced tissue characterisation. This review examines the integration of deep learning (DL) techniques into these MRI modalities, disseminating and exploring the study applications. It highlights how DL contributes to 0.55T and 7T MRI data, showcasing the potential of DL in improving and refining these technologies. The review ends with a brief overview of how MRI technology will evolve in the coming years.

Our society collects data on people for a wide range of applications, from building a census for policy evaluation to running meaningful clinical trials. To collect data, we typically sample individuals with the goal of accurately representing a population of interest. However, current sampling processes often collect data opportunistically from data sources, which can lead to datasets that are biased and not representative, i.e., the collected dataset does not accurately reflect the distribution of demographics of the true population. This is a concern because subgroups within the population can be under- or over-represented in a dataset, which may harm generalizability and lead to an unequal distribution of benefits and harms from downstream tasks that use such datasets (e.g., algorithmic bias in medical decision-making algorithms). In this paper, we assess the relationship between dataset representativeness and group-fairness of classifiers trained on that dataset. We demonstrate that there is a natural tension between dataset representativeness and classifier fairness; empirically we observe that training datasets with better representativeness can frequently result in classifiers with higher rates of unfairness. We provide some intuition as to why this occurs via a set of theoretical results in the case of univariate classifiers. We also find that over-sampling underrepresented groups can result in classifiers which exhibit greater bias to those groups. Lastly, we observe that fairness-aware sampling strategies (i.e., those which are specifically designed to select data with high downstream fairness) will often over-sample members of majority groups. These results demonstrate that the relationship between dataset representativeness and downstream classifier fairness is complex; balancing these two quantities requires special care from both model- and dataset-designers., Comment: 48 pages, 32 figures

An essential problem in statistics and machine learning is the estimation of expectations involving PDFs with intractable normalizing constants. The self-normalized importance sampling (SNIS) estimator, which normalizes the IS weights, has become the standard approach due to its simplicity. However, the SNIS has been shown to exhibit high variance in challenging estimation problems, e.g, involving rare events or posterior predictive distributions in Bayesian statistics. Further, most of the state-of-the-art adaptive importance sampling (AIS) methods adapt the proposal as if the weights had not been normalized. In this paper, we propose a framework that considers the original task as estimation of a ratio of two integrals. In our new formulation, we obtain samples from a joint proposal distribution in an extended space, with two of its marginals playing the role of proposals used to estimate each integral. Importantly, the framework allows us to induce and control a dependency between both estimators. We propose a construction of the joint proposal that decomposes in two (multivariate) marginals and a coupling. This leads to a two-stage framework suitable to be integrated with existing or new AIS and/or variational inference (VI) algorithms. The marginals are adapted in the first stage, while the coupling can be chosen and adapted in the second stage. We show in several examples the benefits of the proposed methodology, including an application to Bayesian prediction with misspecified models.

The evolution of AI and digital signal processing technologies, combined with affordable energy-efficient processors, has propelled the development of both hardware and software for drone applications. Nano-drones, which fit into the palm of the hand, are suitable for indoor environments and safe for human interaction; however, they often fail to deliver the required performance for complex tasks due to the lack of hardware providing sufficient sensing and computing performance. Addressing this gap, we present the GAP9Shield, a nano-drone-compatible module powered by the GAP9, a 150GOPS-capable SoC. The system also includes a 5MP OV5647 camera for high-definition imaging, a WiFi-BLE NINA module, and a 5D VL53L1-based ranging subsystem, which enhances obstacle avoidance capabilities. In comparison with similarly targeted state-of-the-art systems, GAP9Shield provides a 20% higher sample rate (RGB images) while offering a 20% weight reduction. In this paper, we also highlight the energy efficiency and processing power capabilities of GAP9 for object detection (YOLO), localization, and mapping, which can run within a power envelope of below 100 mW and at low latency (as 17 ms for object detection), highlighting the transformative potential of GAP9 for the new generation of nano-drone applications., Comment: This work has been accepted for publication at the European Robotics Forum 2024

The most versatile version of the classical divergence Borel-Cantelli lemma shows that for any divergent sequence of events $E_n$ in a probability space satisfying a quasi-independence condition, its corresponding limsup set $E_\infty$ has positive probability. In particular, it provides a lower bound on the probability of $E_\infty$. In this paper we establish a new version of this classical result which guarantees, under an additional mild assumption, that the probability of $E_\infty$ is not just positive but is one. Unlike existing optimal results, it is applicable within the setting of arbitrary probability spaces. We then go onto to consider a range of applications in number theory and dynamical systems. These include new results on the inhomogeneous Duffin-Schaeffer conjecture. In particular, we establish alternatives to the classical (homogeneous) zero-one laws of Cassels and Gallagher and use them to resolve the so-called weak Duffin-Schaeffer conjecture for an arbitrary rational inhomogeneous shift. As a bi-product, we establish the Duffin-Schaeffer conjecture with congruence relations. The applications to dynamical systems include new characterisations of Borel-Cantelli sequences and new dynamical Borel-Cantelli lemmas, as well as characterising Khintchine-type sequences for shrinking targets., Comment: 80 pages

In this paper, we study linear backward parabolic SPDEs and present new a priori estimates for their weak solutions. Inspired by the seminal work of Y. Hu, J. Ma and J. Yong from 2002 on strong solutions, we establish $L^p$-estimates requiring minimal assumptions on the regularity of the coefficients, the terminal data, and the external force. To this end, we derive a new It\^{o}'s formula for the $L^p$-norm of the solution, extending the classical result in the $L^2$-setting. This formula is then used to improve further the regularity of the first component of the solution up to $L^\infty$. Additionally, we present applications such as the controllability of backward SPDEs with $L^p$-controls and a local existence result for a semilinear equation without imposing any growth condition on the nonlinear term.

The advent of Large Language Models (LLMs) and Generative AI has revolutionized natural language applications across various domains. However, high-stakes decision-making tasks in fields such as medical, legal and finance require a level of precision, comprehensiveness, and logical consistency that pure LLM or Retrieval-Augmented-Generation (RAG) approaches often fail to deliver. At Elemental Cognition (EC), we have developed a neuro-symbolic AI platform to tackle these problems. The platform integrates fine-tuned LLMs for knowledge extraction and alignment with a robust symbolic reasoning engine for logical inference, planning and interactive constraint solving. We describe Cora, a Collaborative Research Assistant built on this platform, that is designed to perform complex research and discovery tasks in high-stakes domains. This paper discusses the multi-step inference challenges inherent in such domains, critiques the limitations of existing LLM-based methods, and demonstrates how Cora's neuro-symbolic approach effectively addresses these issues. We provide an overview of the system architecture, key algorithms for knowledge extraction and formal reasoning, and present preliminary evaluation results that highlight Cora's superior performance compared to well-known LLM and RAG baselines.

The prophet inequality is one of the cornerstone problems in optimal stopping theory and has become a crucial tool for designing sequential algorithms in Bayesian settings. In the i.i.d. $k$-selection prophet inequality problem, we sequentially observe $n$ non-negative random values sampled from a known distribution. Each time, a decision is made to accept or reject the value, and under the constraint of accepting at most $k$. For $k=1$, Hill and Kertz [Ann. Probab. 1982] provided an upper bound on the worst-case approximation ratio that was later matched by an algorithm of Correa et al. [Math. Oper. Res. 2021]. The worst-case tight approximation ratio for $k=1$ is computed by studying a differential equation that naturally appears when analyzing the optimal dynamic programming policy. A similar result for $k>1$ has remained elusive. In this work, we introduce a nonlinear system of differential equations for the i.i.d. $k$-selection prophet inequality that generalizes Hill and Kertz's equation when $k=1$. Our nonlinear system is defined by $k$ constants that determine its functional structure, and their summation provides a lower bound on the optimal policy's asymptotic approximation ratio for the i.i.d. $k$-selection prophet inequality. To obtain this result, we introduce for every $k$ an infinite-dimensional linear programming formulation that fully characterizes the worst-case tight approximation ratio of the $k$-selection prophet inequality problem for every $n$, and then we follow a dual-fitting approach to link with our nonlinear system for sufficiently large values of $n$. As a corollary, we use our provable lower bounds to establish a tight approximation ratio for the stochastic sequential assignment problem in the i.i.d. non-negative regime.

We introduce LLM-ARC, a neuro-symbolic framework designed to enhance the logical reasoning capabilities of Large Language Models (LLMs), by combining them with an Automated Reasoning Critic (ARC). LLM-ARC employs an Actor-Critic method where the LLM Actor generates declarative logic programs along with tests for semantic correctness, while the Automated Reasoning Critic evaluates the code, runs the tests and provides feedback on test failures for iterative refinement. Implemented using Answer Set Programming (ASP), LLM-ARC achieves a new state-of-the-art accuracy of 88.32% on the FOLIO benchmark which tests complex logical reasoning capabilities. Our experiments demonstrate significant improvements over LLM-only baselines, highlighting the importance of logic test generation and iterative self-refinement. We achieve our best result using a fully automated self-supervised training loop where the Actor is trained on end-to-end dialog traces with Critic feedback. We discuss potential enhancements and provide a detailed error analysis, showcasing the robustness and efficacy of LLM-ARC for complex natural language reasoning tasks.

The paper reports an empirical study of the effect of human treatment of a robot on the social perception of the robot's behavior. The study employed an enacted interaction between an anthropomorphic "waiter" robot and two customers. The robot and one of the customers (acted out by a researcher) were following four different interaction scripts, representing all combinations of mutual politeness and impoliteness of the robot and the customer. The participants (N=24, within-subject design) were assigned the role of an "included observer", that is, a fellow customer who was present in the situation without being actively involved in the interactions. The participants assessed how they experienced the interaction scenarios by providing Likert scale scores and free-text responses. The results indicate that while impolite robots' behavior was generally assessed negatively, it was commonly perceived as more justifiable and fairer if the robot was treated impolitely by the human. It has been shown numerically that coupled nonlinear Schr\"odinger equations describing the interaction between the left and right circular polarizations of a paraxial optical wave in a defocusing Kerr medium with an anomalous dispersion in a helical waveguide have stable solutions in the form of elongated stationary rotating bubbles with several optical vortices attached to the ends. A bubble is an arbitrarily long quasi-cylindrical three-dimensional cavity in one of the components filled with the opposite component. The transverse profile of the bubble is determined by the shape of the cross section of the waveguide, the helix pitch, the number of vortices, and the background intensity of the surrounding component rather than by the total amount of the filling component. We introduce the notion of a "walk with jumps", which we conceive as an evolving process in which a point moves in a space (for us, typically $\mathbb{H}^2$) over time, in a consistent direction and at a consistent speed except that it is interrupted by a finite set of "jumps" in a fixed direction and distance from the walk direction. Our motivation is biological; specifically, to use walks with jumps to encode the activity of a neuron over time (a ``spike train``). Because (in $\mathbb{H}^2$) the walk is built out of a sequence of transformations that do not commute, the walk's endpoint encodes aspects of the sequence of jump times beyond their total number, but does so incompletely. The main results of the paper use the tools of hyperbolic geometry to give positive and negative answers to the following question: to what extent does the endpoint of a walk with jumps faithfully encode the walk's sequence of jump times?

Foundation model development attracts a rapidly expanding body of contributors, scientists, and applications. To help shape responsible development practices, we introduce the Foundation Model Development Cheatsheet: a growing collection of 250+ tools and resources spanning text, vision, and speech modalities. We draw on a large body of prior work to survey resources (e.g. software, documentation, frameworks, guides, and practical tools) that support informed data selection, processing, and understanding, precise and limitation-aware artifact documentation, efficient model training, advance awareness of the environmental impact from training, careful model evaluation of capabilities, risks, and claims, as well as responsible model release, licensing and deployment practices. We hope this curated collection of resources helps guide more responsible development. The process of curating this list, enabled us to review the AI development ecosystem, revealing what tools are critically missing, misused, or over-used in existing practices. We find that (i) tools for data sourcing, model evaluation, and monitoring are critically under-serving ethical and real-world needs, (ii) evaluations for model safety, capabilities, and environmental impact all lack reproducibility and transparency, (iii) text and particularly English-centric analyses continue to dominate over multilingual and multi-modal analyses, and (iv) evaluation of systems, rather than just models, is needed so that capabilities and impact are assessed in context.

This paper reports recent lattice characterization results obtained at the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) storage ring, conducted without reliance on a lattice model. A pair of beam position monitors (BPMs) with bunch-by-bunch (B$\times$B) resolution, were recently installed in a section of the storage ring free of magnetic fields. The new BPM pair measured the beam, or bunch's transverse Poincar\'e map precisely after the beam was excited. Linear one-turn-matrices (OTM) were then derived, and from these, the 4-dimensional coupled Twiss parameters were extracted at the locations of the BPM pair. By normalizing beam oscillation amplitudes with the Twiss parameters, the global action-variables were obtained. These action-variables facilitated the measurement of the local Twiss parameters observed by other BPMs independent on lattice model. This method is general, and particularly useful in certain scenarios such as a round beam mode in a diffraction-limited light source ring. We applied it to assess both weakly and strongly coupled lattices at the NSLS-II ring. Through analysis of the strongly coupled lattice, the quadrupole tilt errors were estimated to be less than 400 \si{\mu}rad. Collecting mobile datasets remains challenging for academic researchers due to limited data access and technical barriers. Commercial organizations often possess exclusive access to mobile data, leading to a "data monopoly" that restricts the independence of academic research. Existing open-source mobile data collection frameworks primarily focus on mobile sensing data rather than screen content, which is crucial for various research studies. We present Crepe, a no-code Android app that enables researchers to collect information displayed on screen through simple demonstrations of target data. Crepe utilizes a novel Graph Query technique which augments the structures of mobile UI screens to support flexible identification, location, and collection of specific data pieces. The tool emphasizes participants' privacy and agency by providing full transparency over collected data and allowing easy opt-out. We designed and built Crepe for research purposes only and in scenarios where researchers obtain explicit consent from participants. Code for Crepe will be open-sourced to support future academic research data collection.

In this work, we develop a comprehensive framework for F10.7, S10.7, M10.7, and Y10.7 solar driver forecasting with a time series Transformer (PatchTST). To ensure an equal representation of high and low levels of solar activity, we construct a custom loss function to weight samples based on the distance between the solar driver's historical distribution and the training set. The solar driver forecasting framework includes an 18-day lookback window and forecasts 6 days into the future. When benchmarked against the Space Environment Technologies (SET) dataset, our model consistently produces forecasts with a lower standard mean error in nearly all cases, with improved prediction accuracy during periods of high solar activity. In this work, we assess the internal dynamics of particles in liquid-solid fluidized beds using an unresolved CFD-DEM model. We use the Nearest Neighbors Method (NNM) and the mixing index based on the principal component analysis proposed by Doucet et al. [1] to quantify the bed mixing for several flow regimes and particle properties. Discussions on the advantages and drawbacks of each method are provided. Using results for several inlet flow rates, we show that the dimensionless mixing time reaches a plateau and does not increase significantly with the inlet velocity. The principal component analysis shows that the studied fluidized bed has no preferential mixing component. Additionally, we show that, except for the sliding friction coefficient, the collision properties have almost negligible influence on the mixing behavior.

We consider the time-harmonic Maxwell equations set on a domain made up of two subdomains that represent a magnetic conductor and a non-magnetic material, and we assume that the relative magnetic permeability $\mu_{r}$ between the two materials is high. We prove uniform a priori estimates for Maxwell solutions when the interface between the two subdomains is supposed to be Lipschitz. The recent success of Large Language Models (LLMs) has sparked concerns about their potential to spread misinformation. As a result, there is a pressing need for tools to identify ``fake arguments'' generated by such models. To create these tools, examples of texts generated by LLMs are needed. This paper introduces a methodology to obtain good, bad and ugly arguments from argumentative essays produced by ChatGPT, OpenAI's LLM. We then describe a novel dataset containing a set of diverse arguments, ArGPT. We assess the effectiveness of our dataset and establish baselines for several argumentation-related tasks. Finally, we show that the artificially generated data relates well to human argumentation and thus is useful as a tool to train and test systems for the defined tasks.
