Abstract

The transient hydrodynamic lubrication model of tilting pad journal bearings (TPJBs) was established by the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method and the self-developed dynamic grid program. The fluid-structure interaction between the flow field and the rotor motion, the pads rotations was realized. The feasibility of the model is proved by comparing with the experimental data. The dynamic response of TPJBs under the various unbalance, the loading modes and the rotating speeds was studied. The dynamic response of TPJBs is further analyzed through a research of the relationships among the shaft whirl orbits, transient force acting on the shaft, rotation angles of the pads and transient oil film force of the pads. With the increase of unbalance, the whirl orbits expand and whirl orbits centers rise continuously. The whirl orbits and orbit center attitude angles of TPJBs are smaller than those of fixed-pad journal bearings. Compare with the load between pads, the whirl orbits are smaller and whirl orbits centers drop slightly under the load on pads. With the increase of rotating speed, the whirl orbits expand nonlinearly, whirl orbit center rises nonlinearly. The transient force acting on the shaft, the rotation angles of the pads and the transient oil film force of the pads change periodically, and the period and frequency of these changes are the same as that of the shaft rotation. Abstract

When expressing streptavidin recombinant polypeptide on magnetosomes (called bacterial magnetic nanoparticles, or BMPs), the presence of endogenous bacterial biotin might be detrimental. In the study, the streptavidin monomer fragment (SA1–116) was fused with the intein N-terminal (termed precursor SA1–116-IN), and SA1–116-IN was expressed in E. coli (BL21). Meanwhile, the SA117–160 fragment was fused with the C-terminal intein, and then this chimeric polypeptide was expressed on magnetosomes by fusion with magnetosome membrance protein MamF. In the in vitro protein splicing system, the purified engineered magnetosomes (BMP-SA117–160-IC) and the SA1–116-IN precursor were mixed. Intein-mediated trans-splicing reaction was induced to produce the functional magnetic beads BMP-SA. Our results indicate that intein-mediated protein trans-splicing may lead to efficient synthesis of the recombinant streptavidin on the magnetosomes, showing its promising potential to produce other functional magnetic nanoparticles. Abstract

Disassembly activities take place in various recovery operations including remanufacturing, recycling, and disposal. Product disassembly is an effective way to recycle waste products, and it is a necessary condition to make the product life cycle complete. According to the characteristics of the product disassembly line, based on minimizing the number of workstations and balancing the idle time in the station, the harmful index, the demand index, and the number of direction changes are proposed as new optimization objectives. So based on the analysis of the traditional genetic algorithm into the precocious phenomenon, this paper constructed the multi-objective relationship of the disassembly line balance problem. The disassembly line balance problem belongs to the NP-hard problem, and the intelligent optimization algorithm shows excellent performance in solving this problem. Considering the characteristics of the traditional method solving the multi-objective disassembly line balance problem that the solution result was single and could not meet many objectives of balance, a multi-objective improved genetic algorithm was proposed to solve the model. The algorithm speeds up the convergence speed of the algorithm. Based on the example of the basic disassembly task, by comparing with the existing single objective heuristic algorithm, the multiobjective improved genetic algorithm was verified to be effective and feasible, and it was applied to the actual disassembly example to obtain the balance optimization scheme. Two case studies are given: a disassembly process of the automobile engine and a disassembly of the computer components. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Single-phase and oxygen doped Mn2N0.86 thin films have been grown on MgO (111) by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. The films grow under tensile strain and, remarkably, they show ferromagnetic-like interactions at low temperature and ferromagnetic ordering agreed well with the Bloch-law T3/2 at room-temperature. We further demonstrate the enlarged Mn 3s splitting (6.46 eV) and its possible relation to the observed ferromagnetism. Our study not only provide a strategy for further theoretical work on oxygen doped manganese nitrides, but also shed promising light on utilizing its room-temperature FM property to fabricate spintronic devices. Abstract

The first concerned question on the fundamental physics of the resistive switching (RS) effect in metal/Nb-doped SrTiO3 junctions is whether the RS does take place at the whole interface or at some local regions of the interface. Even though several investigations provide the clues of the filamentary nature of the RS, direct evidences are still required. Moreover, there is obvious inconsistency between the possible filamentary feature and the observed capacitance-voltage (C-V) hysteresis loops. Here, we report direct evidences of a filamentary RS effect in Pt/Nb-doped SrTiO3 junctions. The virgin Pt/NSTO junctions show an initial RS effect. The current-voltage (I-V) characteristic of the initial RS and the C-V characteristic in the virgin junctions are interpreted by using the theory of metal/semiconductor contacts. The correspondence between the initial RS and the C-V hysteresis loops is also discussed. The most important is that an electroforming process is observed at a large forward voltage, which is a direct indication of the formation of conductive filaments across the Pt/NSTO interface. Following the electroforming, the Pt/NSTO junctions exhibit a filamentary RS effect. The I-V characteristic of the filamentary RS deviates from the theoretical prediction of metal/semiconductor interfaces. However, the C-V characteristic is almost the same as that of the virgin junctions. This demonstrates that the conductive filaments are formed at local regions of the Pt/NSTO interface and a majority of the interface remains invariant. The results clearly show that a filamentary RS effect occurs in the Pt/NSTO junctions and that the observed C-V hysteresis loops are not correlated to the filamentary RS. © 2014 AIP Publishing LLC. Abstract

In topological crystalline insulators (TCIs), topology and crystal symmetry intertwine to create surface states with distinct characteristics. The breaking of crystal symmetry in TCIs is predicted to impart mass to the massless Dirac fermions. Here, we report high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy studies of a TCI, Pb1-xSnxSe that reveal the coexistence of zero-mass Dirac fermions protected by crystal symmetry with massive Dirac fermions consistent with crystal symmetry breaking. In addition, we show two distinct regimes of the Fermi surface topology separated by a Van-Hove singularity at the Lifshitz transition point. Our work paves the way for engineering the Dirac band gap and realizing interaction-driven topological quantum phenomena in TCIs.

Abstract

Introduction: One of main scientific goals of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) is to accurately measure the energy spectra of different cosmic ray compositions around the ‘knee’ region. The Wide Field-of-View (FoV) Cherenkov Telescope Array (WFCTA), which is one of the main detectors of LHAASO and has 18 telescopes, is built to achieve this goal. Multiple telescopes are put together and point to connected directions for a larger FoV. Method: Telescopes are deployed spatially as close as possible, but due to their own size, the distance between two adjacent telescopes is about 10 m. Therefore, the Cherenkov lateral distribution and the parallax between the two telescopes should be considered in the event building process for images crossing over the boundaries of FoVs of the telescopes. An event building method for Cherenkov images measured by multiple telescopes of WFCTA is developed. The performance of the shower measurements using the combined images is evaluated by comparing with showers that are fully contained by a virtual telescope in simulation. Results and conclusion: It is proved that the developed event building process can help to increase the FoV of WFCTA by 30% while maintaining the same reconstruction quality, compared to the separate telescope reconstruction method.

Abstract

Purpose: Observation of high energy and very high emission from Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) is crucial to study the gigantic explosion and the underline processes. With a large field-of-view and almost full duty cycle, the Water Cherenkov Detector Array (WCDA), a sub-array of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO), is appropriate to monitor the very high energy emission from unpredictable transients such as GRBs. Method: Nevertheless, the main issue for an extensive air shower array is the high energy threshold which limits the horizon of the detector. To address this issue a new trigger method is developed in this article to lower the energy threshold of  WCDA for GRB observation. Result: The proposed method significantly improves the detection efficiency of WCDA for gamma-rays around the GRB direction at 10-300 GeV. The sensitivity of the WCDA for GRB detection with the new trigger method is estimated. The achieved sensitivity of the quarter WCDA array above 10 GeV is comparable with that of Fermi-LAT. The data analysis process and corresponding fluence upper limit for GRB 190719C is presented as an example.

Abstract

Adler-Bell-Jackiw chiral anomaly is a representative feature arising from the topological nature in topological semimetal. We report the first experimental observation of giant planar Hall effect in type-II Weyl semimetal WTe2. Our comprehensive analyes of the experimental data demonstrate that the detected planar Hall effect is originated from the chiral anomaly of Weyl fermions. Unlike the somewhat elusive negative magnetoresistance, the planar Hall effect is robust and easy to be detected in type-II Weyl semimetal. This work reveals that the planar Hall effect is an effective transport probe to determine the topological nature of topological semimetals, especially in type-II Weyl semimetals.

Abstract

We demonstrated an electric field controlled exchange bias (EB) effect accompanied with unipolar resistive switching behavior in the Si/SiO2/Pt/Co/NiO/Pt device. By applying certain voltages, the device displays obvious EB in high-resistance-state while negligible EB in low-resistance-state. Conductive filaments forming and rupture in the NiO layer but near the Co-NiO interface are considered to play dominant roles in determining the combined resistive switching and EB phenomena. This work paves a new way for designing multifunctional and nonvolatile magnetic-electrical random access memory devices., 20 pages 5 figures

396. Hybrid state-space self-tuning control of uncertain linear systems

Abstract

The paper presents a hybrid state-space self-tuner using a new dual-rate sampling scheme for digital adaptive control of continuous-time uncertain linear systems. A state-space-based recursive least-squares algorithm, together with a variable forgetting factor, is used for direct estimations of both the equivalent discrete-time uncertain linear system parameters and the associated discrete-time state of a continuous-time uncertain linear system from the sampled input and output data. An analogue optimal regional pole-placement design method is used for designing an optimal observer-based analogue controller. A suboptimal observer-based digital controller is then designed from the designed analogue controller using digital redesign technique. To enhance the robustness of parameter identification and state estimation algorithms, a dynamic bound for a class of uncertain bilinear parameters and a fast-rate digital controller are developed at each fast-sampling period. Also, to accommodate computation loads and computation delay for developing the advanced hybrid self-tuner, the designed analogue controller and observer gains are both updated at each slow-sampling period. This control technique has been successfully applied to benchmark control problems.
