Recently, the trend in mounting technology has been toward the multi-chip module owing to its larger mounting density. A demand for low thermal expansion coefficient polyimide and a low dielectric constant polyimide is growing rapidly in complying with this trend.

In order to develop a novel visualization method for a “moving” molecule, the technique of multiplex holography was combined with the computer graphics obtained by the aid of molecular dynamics simulations.

Telomerase activity has been found in most common cancers indicating that telomerase detection may be a useful marker in cancer diagnosis. For detection of telomerase activity and the expression of associated genes in cells, TRAP assay and RT-PCR are customarily used. Immunohistochemical detection of hTERT is useful to detect telomerase-positive cells in a background of non- cancerous cells. We developed a method for the detection of intra-nuclear hTERT protein, in a sub-population of hematopoietic cells, using concurrent staining cell surface antigen and multi color flow cytometry. Human leukemia and myeloma cell lines showed 100% positivity, whereas neutrophils of normal subjects showed 0% positivity, it is consistent with telomerase activity assessed by TRAP assay (r=0.71, p Expression of hTERT protein was higher in CD34-positive blast-gated cells than CD34-negative blast-gated cells. The percentage of the CD34+ cells expressing hTERT ranged from 9.66% to 90.91% in low risk MDS patients, whereas from 50.46% to 97.68% in high risk MDS. The expression level was higher in the high risk group compared to that in the low risk group in MDS (p=0.0054, p=0.0084). This observation implied that telomerase up-regulation and hTERT expression were important for disease progression and could be a marker of more advanced disease. In subsets of MDS and AML bone marrow specimens obtained from these patients, we examined the hTERT expression in CD34+/CD38 high cells and CD34+/CD38 low cells containing stem cell fraction. Of interest, some of the patients showed higher expression of hTERT in CD34+/CD38 low cells than in CD34+/CD38 high cells. This observation is inconsistent with previous reports describing normal bone marrow hematopoietic cell findings. We speculated that this phenomenon could be a marker of MDS abnormality and that telomerase up-regulation may be initiated in the more primitive precursor fraction containing hematopoietic stem cells during the disease progression. Telomerase studies may be useful for definition of the risks associated with disease severity. Multi-parameter nature of flow cytometry and its ability to identify cellular sub-populations will facilitate a fuller understanding of the mechanisms of activation of telomerase.

The possibility of obtaining locally optimal solutions with categorical data is pointed out for the original version of OSMOD development by Saito and Otsu. A revision of the initialization strategy in OSMOD is suggested, and its effectiveness in diminishing this possibility is demonstrated.

The objectives of this research are to find latent dimensions of values held by Japanese at present time and to forecast its changes over the coming decade. The entire analysis is based on an assumption that value judgement is made with respect to many factors, whence we aim to derive multidimensional spatial representation of values. Then diversification of values will be expressed as individual differences in the space and shifts in values as changes of the configuration. In this frame of the study multidimensional scaling methods were applied to data obtained from the questionaire conducted on 2000 people in Tokyo. It is found that values are likely to change and diversify slightly but not to turn over.

For a data matrix composed of subjects by rank orders, a hierarchical clustering method is presented, which partitions subjects into statistically homogeneous clusters on the basis of Kendall’s coefficient of concordance W. The algorithm has been found to work successfully. Illustrative examples of the clustering of real data are offered. The method is useful for both preliminary analysis and confirmatory analysis of nonmetric multidimensional scaling of rank order data, especially in large samples. This method is also compared with other hierarchical clustering methods.

Monomeric p.(formylamino)styrene (FAS) was synthesized; radical copolymerizations with styrene, methyl methacrylate or n.butyl methacrylate were performed. On irradiation with UV light, the copolymers became insoluble. Although the rate of photolysis of FAS in the copolymers decreased with increasing FAS content, the efficiency of insolubilization increased with increasing FAS content. The rate of photolysis of FAS in copolymer films was not significantly affected by oxygen.

This article compares color preferences with a context to color preferences without it, using chips of 50 colors and the shape of an automobile as the context. Subjects were asked to make preference judgments of the color chips with the shape and also without it in the experiment. Multi- variate analyses were performed on the two sets of data to deriue latent spaces of color preference with and without the context. Through interpretation and comparison of the derived spaces, it was found that there was a noticeable context effect between the preference judgments.

The electronic spectra of jet‐cooled Hg–CH4, –C2H6, –N2, and –CO complexes in the vicinity of Hg 3P1−1S0 were studied by means of the LIF, two‐color MPI, and Hg(3P0) pump‐and‐probe techniques. From the observed spectra, the A and B states of these complexes were characterized in analogy with those of Hg–rare gas complexes. These excited‐state complexes were found to predissociate into the Hg (3P0) atom and the ground‐state molecules. The intensity alternation of the predissociation rate with respect to the excitation of the bending vibration was newly observed for the CH4 and N2 complexes in addition to the rotational dependence of the rate. On the basis of these results and the fluorescence lifetimes, the mechanisms of the intramultiplet relaxation for these complexes were examined. This paper develops a method of optimal scaling for multivariate ordinal data, in the framework of a generalized principal component analysis. This method yields a multidimensional configuration of items, a unidimensional scale of category weights for each item and, optionally, a multidimensional configuration of subjects. The computation is performed by alternately solving an eigenvalue problem and executing a quasi-Newton projection method. The algorithm is extended for analysis of data with mixed measurement levels or for analysis with a combined weighting of items. Numerical examples and simulations are provided. The algorithm is discussed and compared with some related methods.

The van der Waals molecules HgNe, HgAr, and HgKr were prepared in a supersonic jet. The fluorescence excitation spectra of A 30+–X 10+ and B 31–X 10+ optical transitions for these molecules which arise from the Hg 3P1–1S0 atomic transition were analyzed and the spectroscopic constants were determined from these analyses. The potential curves were constructed by assuming a Morse function. These results were compared with the results of Rydberg–Klein–Rees calculations of the well width vs well depth.

This paper is concerned with the additive constant problem in metric multidimensional scaling. First the influence of the additive constant on eigenvalues of a scalar product matrix is discussed. The second part of this paper is devoted to the introduction of a new formulation of the additive constant problem. A solution is given for fixed dimensionality, by maximizing a normalized index of fit with a gradient method. An experimental computation has shown that the author's solution is accurate and easy to follow.

豚のカタル性胃炎41例について, 一般的染色法およびCFI法を用いて光輝細胞の検索を行い, 次のような結果を得た. 1) 豚の胃炎においては光輝細胞が出現し, 平滑筋線維の離開が光輝細胞の発生要因になるという浜崎の報告に, ほぼ一致する所見が得られた. 2) 光輝細胞は, 胃粘膜下組織に最も多数出現した. 特に浮腫性膨化部に多く, かつ種々の形態を呈するものが認められた. 3) 粘膜下組織に次いで, 光輝細胞は筋層, 特に間質結合組織内に多く出現した. 胃食道部においては, 粘膜固有層にも明瞭な光輝細胞が認められた. 腺胃部の粘膜固有層には, 少数か, または認め難かった. なお漿膜でも, 少数か, または認められなかった. 4) 4種のKECのうち, Cr-とFe-KEGは明瞭に, Cu-とHg-KECは不明瞭に認められた. 5) 豚の胃における光輝細胞は, 他の報告と同様に, Baryt水分別により観察しやすくなった. 本論文の要旨は, 第83回日本獣医学会(神奈川県相模原市, 1977年4月)において発表した. 稿を終わるに臨み, 材料採取にご協力頂いた東京都芝浦食肉衛生検査所の各位に深謝する.

The effects of anticancer agents were studied on the basis of survival rates following surgery for gastric carcinomas in different histologic types of Laurén's classification. It was revealed that Laurén's classification would provide an index to the use of anticancer agents to a certain extent. Anticancer agents were effective against diffuse gastric carcinoma, and should therefore be intensively used for treatment of this malignancy. For female patients with diffuse gastric carcinoma, careful selection of adequate anticancer agents is highly necessary. Anticancer agents were less effective against intestinal-type carcinoma, and it would therefore be necessary to use anticancer agents on the aged male patients with this malignancy by taking his age and side effects of the agents into consideration.

This paper is concerned with a methodological study of Hayashi’s eej-type quantification method (EQ) and development of a new method (PAMSE) of multidimensional scaling (MDS). First we propose procedures to compare EQ with other methods of MDS in terms of the separation of eigenvalues. Secondly we examine a problem of the fit and dimensionality and point out a peculiar property inherent to EQ. Third we propose a new method of MDS, which is developed from EQ, intended principally for dissimilarity data measured on the medium level between ordinal and interval scale levels. Our method is conceptually similar to but fundamentally different from Johnson’s in that our index of fit is specially formulated in view of the scale level. The method has been found to work successfully, giving a high degree of the rank correlation between the dissimilarities and the derived distances.

This paper proposes a model to analyze the structure and context effects involved in dissimilarity judgment. With some restrictions incorporated, the model is also interpreted as a kind of the distance-density model and further interpreted as a mixed distance and content model. Algorithms for multidimensional scaling based on the proposed model are implemented using nonlinear optimization methods. The algorithms are evaluated through a Monte Carlo study, and applications are demonstrated with real data. Problems regarding the model, the algorithms and possible applications are discussed.

The laser induced fluorescence spectra of HgXe formed in a supersonic free jet of a He/Xe/Hg mixture were observed to determine the interatomic potentials between Hg and Xe in the X 10+, A 30+, and B 31 states. The dissociation energies for the X, A, and B states are 254, 1457, and 172 cm−1, respectively, with the equilibrium interatomic distances of 4.25, 3.25, and 4.47 A for the respective states. It is found that the potential shape for the X and B states can be represented in good approximation by a Morse function, though this function may not reproduce the potential for the A state especially in the vicinity of high vibrational levels (v′>16).

Electron microscopic observations of the parotid gland and the pancreas were done on rats with acute pancreatitis, obstructive jaundice, ileus or peritonitis produced as reported previously. In acute pancreatitis the ultrastructural changes noted in the parotid acinar cell were an irregular arrangement of the acinar cells associated with atrophy, decrease in number of secretory granules, dilatation of cisternae of the granular endoplasmic reticulum and appearance of lipid droplets. In other sets of experiments, however, these ultrastructural changes were not noted; the appearance of lipid droplets was the only finding in the obstructive jaundice produced by ligation of common bile duct at the hilar portion of liver. The ultrastructural features of the parotid acinar cells in the experimentally produced pancreatitis were compatible with histological findings previously reported. It is conceivable that the ultrastructural changes, except appearance of lipid droplets, in the parotid gland are induced by pancreatitis. The results of the present study provide additional evidence for the close relationship between pancreas and parotid gland.
