A morphologic characterization of a tunical multifocal fibrous pseudotumor is presented because of the clinical dilemma this rare entity causes urologists and pathologists. This report demonstrates the necessity for familiarity with testicular pseudotumors in order to avoid an unnecessary orchiectomy. If histopathologic examination of biopsies from every pseudotumor nodule fails to demonstrate malignancy, excision of the entire tunics including the pseudotumors is appropriate therapy.

A bleeding disease similar to von Willebrand's disease in man was diagnosed in a 6-month-old Chesapeake Bay Retriever with recurrent, protracted gingival hemorrhage that responded rapidly to fresh, whole blood transfusions. The dog had a prolonged bleeding time and low plasma factor VIII coagulant activity (18%). The plasma had no detectable factor VIII-related antigen or von Willebrand factor, as measured by ristocetin-cofactor and polybrene-cofactor activities. The dam of the dog had a plasma factor VIII-related antigen concentration (32%) well below the normal range. The antigen in the sire's plasma was at the low end of the normal range, as was the polybrene-cofactor of both the sire and the dam. These data suggested an inherited basis for von Willebrand's disease in this dog.

The Nd:YAG laser, the CO2 laser, and the argon laser have all been used as cutting or hemostatic tools in open urologic surgery and in the treatment of skin lesions of the genitalia with the choice of instrument being dictated by the characteristics of each wavelength. Results to date in open surgical applications have not been dramatic. For the treatment of benign and malignant lesions of the external genitalia, lasers may prove to have a significant advantage over existing methods of treatment.

A myth about transurethral prostatectomy is that it renders the patient unable to achieve an erection. There is no evidence that this is so, nor any evidence that prostatic hypertrophy itself causes impotence. It is imperative that the patient understand what the prosthesis will and will not do for him. All currently available devices provide a penile shaft rigid enough for intromission, but because all devices occupy only the corpora cavernosa, the erect penis will not be as long or as great in circumference as the patient's physiologic erections once were.

We describe a case of primary amebic meningoencephalitis due to Naegleria fowleri. This is the first reported case, to our knowledge, in Missouri. Emphasis is placed on the morphologic identification of degenerating amebas in a cytospin preparation of cerebrospinal fluid using Wright's stain during the rapidly progressive meningoencephalitic stage.

Chromium doped semi-insulating GaAs was annealed at 800°C after implantation with Be, Mg, Zn, and Cd ions at 60 KeV and ambient temperature with a fluence of 1015 ions/cm2. The defect structures in the as-implanted and as-annealed states were examined using transmission electron microscopy techniques. The differences in the electrical properties of the specimens implanted with different ions are discussed in relation to the differences in the observed defect structures for the various samples.

Considerable evidence has been presented regarding the complex relationships between nutrition, metabolism, responses to inflammation,1,2 susceptibility to neoplasia, and immunocompetence.3 These relationships, coupled with the potential effects of copper bioavailability on the outcome of toxicology studies,4 led us to evaluate the effects of diet and copper deprivation on immunocompetence.

The primary objective was to determine the extent of chorioretinal damage caused by exposure to very-high-altitude, high-yield nuclear detonations at distances of 50 to 350 nautical miles from burst point and to relate experimental data to theoretical calculations. A correlated objective was to estimate, from the data derived from these experiments, distance limits beyond which retinal burns were not expected to occur from nuclear detonations at these altitudes. Pigmented rabbits were exposed at varying distances from surface zero, on the surface and at altitude, to the radiant thermal energy from two very-high-altitude bursts. Burns were produced in all animals at all stations where line-of-sight vision prevailed. During Shot Teak, chorioretinal burns averaging 0.5 mm in diameter were produced in rabbits exposed behind plexiglass in an aircraft at an altitude of 15,000 feet and a slant range of 307 nautical miles from the burst point.

A method for automatically precoordinating index terms was devised to form combinations of terms which are stored as subject headings. A computer program accepts lists of auto-indexed terms and by applying linguistic and sequence rules combines appropriate terms, thereby effecting improved searchability of an information storage and retrieval system.A serious failing exists in many indexing systems in that index terms authorized for use are too general for use by technically-knowledgeable searchers. A search conducted using these terms frequently produces too many documents not specifically related to the users' requirements. An indexing method using the language in which the document was written corrects this failing, but eliminates the generality of the previous approach. A compromise between indexing generality and specificity is offered by NEXUS precoordination which combines specific terms into subject-headings, eliminating improper coordination of terms when matching search requirements with document term sets.NEXUS examines the suffix morpheme of each input term and determines whether or not the term should be a member of an index term combination or precoordination. If insufficient evidence is present to make such a determination, a sequence rule goes into effect which combines terms based on their syntax.A variety of corpora was used to test and develop the NEXUS precoordinator. Data bases consisting of legal information, computer program descriptions and NASA linear tape system documentation were used. More variety was present in the NASA documents which made the results of the application of NEXUS to this collection more significant than the others. Also, a fuller battery of rules was developed by this time, increasing the power of the program.

The development of instrumentation techniques for research in internal combustion engines is described. A general discussion of instrument classification and requirements is followed by a description of transducer development including calibration techniques, signal processing, and data acquisition. Details are given of two direct on-line digitizing devices for high-speed data acquisition (one purpose made and the other using an on-line computer). An analysis of instrumentation and data acquisition errors is presented. The integration of the data acquisition equipment into a semi-automatic controlled test bed is described and a proposal for a fully automated test bed presented.
