Presently in order to excavate suitability of resources of lactic acid bacteria for fermentation of mandarin fish, a strain of lactic acid bacteria (LAB), which was cultivated from stinky mandarin fish via using traditional MRS medium (CMC 1-8), was firstly isolated and purified. Subsequently, it was discovered that the as-harvested LAB was recognized as Lactobacillus sakei subsp. sakei with assistance of technology of phenotypic identifying and 16S rRNA sequencing. Concurrently, relevant characteristics in aspects of growth curve, acid production capacity, temperature and salt tolerance of Lactobacillus sakei subsp. sakei were plainly investigated. Furthermore, the preliminary research on protease properties and biological properties was revealed. The results unfolded that the strain could grow and produce acid normally at 37 °C, and deliver a strong tolerance even under 3% NaCl at 12 °C, which could be significant sufficiently to satisfy the low-temperature and salty fermentation of mandarin fish. The best compatible temperature and pH value for protease production were at 70 °C and 9.0, respectively. Resultantly, the main metabolites, containing polyphenols, flavonoids and soluble polypeptides, performed a remarkable effect on scavenging abilities of 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS), 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazine (DPPH) free radical and ferricyanide reducing ability, of which the IC50 were 1.05, 6.87, and 4.62 mg/mL, respectively. And, the metabolites displayed partial inhibitory effects on Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Bacillus subtilis. Therefore, CMC 1-8 can potentially serve as a functional microorganism to directionally ferment mandarin fish.

Structural-color nanoprinting, which can generate vivid colors with spatial resolution at subwavelength level, possesses potential market in optical anticounterfeiting and information encryption. Herein, we propose an ultracompact metasurface with a single-cell design strategy to establish three independent information channels for simultaneous watermarked structural-color nanoprinting and holographic imaging. Dual-channel spectrum manipulation and single-channel phase manipulation are combined together by elaborately introducing the orientation degeneracy into the design of variable dielectric nanobricks. Hence, a structural-color nanoprinting image covered with polarization-dependent watermarks and a holographic image can be respectively generated under different decoded environments. The proposed metasurface shows a flexible method for tri-channel image display with high information capacity, and exhibits dual-mode anticounterfeiting with double safeguards, i.e., polarization-controlled watermarks and a far-field holographic image. This study provides a feasible route to develop multifunctional metasurfaces for applications including optical anticounterfeiting, information encryption and security, information multiplexing, etc.

Edge states in topological phase transitions have been observed in various platforms. To date, verification of the edge states and the associated topological invariant are mostly studied, and yet a quantitative measurement of topological phase transitions is still lacking. Here, we show the direct measurement of edge states and their localization lengths from survival probability. We employ photonic waveguide arrays to demonstrate the topological phase transitions based on the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. By measuring the survival probability at the lattice boundary, we show that in the long-time limit, the survival probability is P=(1-e^{-2/ξ_{loc}})^{2}, where ξ_{loc} is the localization length. This length derived from the survival probability is compared with the distance from the transition point, yielding a critical exponent of ν=0.94±0.04 at the phase boundary. Our experiment provides an alternative route to characterizing topological phase transitions and extracting their key physical quantities.

Metasurface-based structural-colors are usually implemented by changing the dimensions of nanostructures to produce different spectral responses. Therefore, a single-size nanostructured metasurface usually cannot display structural-colors since it has only one design degree of freedom (DOF), i.e., the orientation angles of nanostructures. Here, we show structural-color nanoprinting images can be generated with a single-size nanostructured metasurface, enabled by designing the anisotropic nanostructure with different spectral responses along its long- and short-axis directions, respectively. More interestingly, the concept of orientation degeneracy of nanostructures can be applied in the metasurface design, which shows two spectral modulations can be implemented under different polarization directions of output light, thus extending the color-nanoprinting from single-channel to dual-channel. The proposed dual-channel metasurface used for anticounterfeiting color-nanoprinting has presented the advantages of ultra-compactness, high information capacity, and vivid colors, which can develop broad applications in fields such as high-end anticounterfeiting, high-density information storage, optical encryption, etc.

To solve the problem of static magnetic field detection accuracy and consistency, we prepared an array of single NV centers for static magnetic field vector and gradient detection using the femtosecond laser direct writing method. The prepared single NV centers are characterized by fewer impurity defects and good stress uniformity, with an average spatial positioning error of only 0.2 µm. This array of single NV centers can achieve high accuracy magnetic field vector and gradient measurement with GBZ≈-0.047 µT/µm in the Z-axis. This result provides a new idea for large-range, high-precision magnetic field vector and gradient measurements.

A novel ratiometric fluorescent tyrosinase assay is developed based on hybrid nano-assembly of gold nanocluster and tyrosine-containing peptides. The AuNCs@YCY nano-probe (AYNP) is fabricated through the hydrophobic interactions and π-π stacking between the tyrosine residues of the Tyr-Cys-Tyr tripeptide (YCY) and the ligands on the surfaces of AuNCs under the near-isoelectric pH value. The resulted AYNP shows distinct fluorescence responses, spontaneous turn-on of the blue emission and turn-off of the near-infrared emission, with a single wavelength excitation. It is demonstrated that the enhancement and quenching are due to the production of pheomelanin and dopaquinone structures, respectively, induced by tyrosinase oxidation. The internal referencing system provides the tyrosinase assay with superior sensitivity and a detection limit as low as 6.3 U L

This study evaluated and compared the efficacy, safety and economy of four Chinese patent medicines(CPMs) in the treatment of functional dyspepsia(FD) using the method of rapid health technology assessment. It aims to provide decision-makers with rapid decision-making information. The eight Chinese and English databases were comprehensively and systematically searched for the relevant clinical research. Studies were screened and evaluated. A total of 110 studies were identified, including 95 randomized controlled trials(RCTs), 7 controlled clinical trials(CCTs), 7 systematic review/Meta-analysis and 1 economic evaluation, among which 28 were Dalitong Granules, 49 were Zhizhu Kuanzhong Capsules, 3 were Biling Weitong Granules and 30 were Qizhi Weitong Granules(Tablets/Capsules). The quality of the included literature was generally low. The efficacy of four CPMs alone or combined with western medicine in the treatment of FD is different. Dalitong Granules was used to treat motility disorder in FD. Zhizhu Kuanzhong Capsules and Qizhi Weitong Granules(Tablets/Capsules) can treat FD patients with anxiety and depression. Qizhi Weitong Granules(Tablets/Capsules) were mainly used in FD for perimenopausal patients. There were no serious adverse reactions in the clinical study of four CPMs in the treatment of FD. Dalitong Granules has better effects than mosapride in the treatment of FD, but the cost is slightly higher. The cost-effectiveness ratio of Zhizhu Kuanzhong Capsules in the treatment of FD patients with anxiety and depression was lower than that of Domperidone. In terms of average daily price, Qizhi Weitong Tablets has the highest price(27.00 yuan per day), Qizhi Weitong Granules has the lowest price(5.04 yuan per day), Biling Weitong Granules has a relatively high price(15.53 yuan per day), followed by Dalitong Granules(13.03 yuan per day). The evidence of Dalitong Granules covered the efficacy, safety and economy, which is relatively complete compared with the other three drugs. It has effective potential in the treatment of motility disorder in FD. Further research in this field in the future is needed.

Organotin compounds (OTCs) are a category of persistent toxic substances with endocrine disrupting effects and may pose a risk to aquatic organisms and human health via water. This study collected 78 surface water samples from the drinking water source in the upper Yangtze River Estuary from July 2018 to November 2019. Out of the nine OTC targets, tributyltin (TBT), dimethyltin (DMT), trimethyltin (TMT), dibutyltin (DBT), and monobutyltin (MBT) were detected from more than 50% of the water samples, with cumulative concentrations of OTCs ranging from 42.5 ± 54.0 to 421 ± 176 ng Sn L−1. The composition and concentrations of OTCs in the stormy months were different from those in other months. The concentrations of OTCs with the ebbing tide exceeded those in the flooding tide and increased when the flooding tide transitioned to the ebbing tide. A pulsed trend in concentrations of OTCs in river water was evident due to the impact of rainfall runoff and tidal currents. Identified sources of OTCs included ship antifouling paints, agricultural pesticides, and plastic waste. TBT in water sources poses a low risk to human health and a risk to the ecosystem, particularly during the stormy months.

Ultracold spinor atoms in the weak and strong interaction regime have received extensive investigations, while the behavior in the intermediate regime is less understood. We numerically investigate ultracold spinor atomic ensembles of finite size in the intermediate interaction regime, and reveal the evolution of the eigenstates from the strong to the intermediate regime. In the strong interaction regime, it has been well known that the low-lying eigenenergy spectrum presents the well-gaped multi-manifold structure, and the energy gaps protect the categorization of the eigenstates. In the intermediate interaction regime, it is found that the categorization of the eigenstates is preserved, and the eigenenergy spectrum become quasi-continuum, with different manifolds becoming overlapped. The overlapping induces both direct and avoided crossings between close-lying manifolds, which is determined by the combined symmetries of the eigenstates involved in the crossing. A modified t-J model is derived to describe the low-lying eigenstates in the intermediate regime, which can capture the formation and crossings of the manifolds. The masked priming paradigm has been extensively used to investigate the indirect impacts of unconscious stimuli on conscious behaviors, and the congruency effect of priming on free choices has gained increasing attention. Free choices allow participants to voluntarily choose a response from multiple options during each trial. While repeated practice is known to increase priming effects in subliminal visual tasks, whether practice increases the priming effect of free choices in the masked priming paradigm is unclear. And it is also not clear how the proportions of free choice and forced choice trials in one block will affect the free choice masked priming effect. The present study applied repeated practice in the masked priming paradigm and found that after training, the participants were more likely to be influenced by masked primes during free choice, but this training process did not alter the visibility of masked stimuli. In addition, this study revealed that when the proportions of free choice and forced choice trials were equal during the training stage, this enhanced effect by practice was the strongest. These results indicated that practice could enhance masked stimulus processing in free-choice, and that the learning effect may mainly be derived from the early selection and integrated processing of masked stimuli.

Peach (Prunus persica (L.) Batsch) is susceptible to chilling injury under improper low-temperature storage (2°C–5°C). Previous research has shown that abscisic acid (ABA) alleviates chilling injury in fruits and vegetables, but the potential mechanism is still unclear. To explore its effectiveness and potential mechanism in alleviating chilling injury during cold storage, exogenous ABA was applied to peach fruit by immersion in 100 μmol L−1 solutions for 10 min. In our experiment, ABA alleviated chilling injury by reducing hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) content and ethylene production. In addition, ABA inhibited the expression of the ethylene synthesis-related genes PpACO1 and PpEIN2. At the same time, ABA activated the antioxidant enzymatic pathway and the ascorbate-glutathione (AsA-GSH) cycle, the transcript abundance encoding genes related to antioxidant enzyme activities also changed correspondingly. The results suggested that ABA alleviated chilling injury by scavenging excessive H2O2 by promoting antioxidant enzymes and the AsA-GSH pathway.

This study analyzed and reported the basic information and clinical evidence of Chinese patent medicines for digestive system diseases in children in a scoping review manner. Based on the drug instructions, the basic information of Chinese patent medicines for digestive system diseases in children was obtained by searching the three lists of national medicines. At the same time, the relevant clinical literatures from the first day of establishment to March 7, 2022 were obtained from Chinese and English databases. According to the screening criteria, 39 Chinese patent medicines were included, involving 8 dosage forms. Eight Chinese medicines including Crataegi Fructus, Poria, Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, Hordei Fructus Germinatus, Arecae Semen, Massa Medicata Fermentata, Dioscoreae Rhizoma, and Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma were frequently used, and the main effects were invigorating spleen, checking diarrhea, promoting digestion, clearing heat, and harmonizing stomach. The indications for Chinese patent medicines were mainly diarrhea, anorexia, food accumulation, dyspepsia, and rotavirus enteritis in children. Among all drug instructions, only 4 mentioned adverse reactions and 6 mentioned contraindications. Ninety-two clinical studies were included ultimately, including 84 randomized controlled studies, 2 systematic reviews/Meta-analysis, 1 retrospective study, and 5 case series. The literatures only covered 21 kinds of Chinese patent medicines, with the most studies related to Xingpi Yanger Granules, accounting for 32.6% of the total literature volume. The sample size in the literatures was mainly focused on 51-200 cases, and 51-100 cases were selected by the most literatures, accounting for 34.45%. The interventions of the experimental group were mainly Chinese patent medicines or Chinese patent medicines combined with western medicines. The literatures with treatment course of 0-7 d accounted for the largest proportion(51.10%). The effective rate and symptom improvement time were used as the indexes to evaluate the results. The main adverse reactions were vomiting, constipation, nausea, rash, cold, diarrhea, redness of the skin around the umbilicus, or red itchy skin. The analysis of this study found that Chinese patent medicines have good curative effect and research prospects in the treatment of digestive system diseases in children. However, most clinical evidence has problems, such as limited indexes to evaluate the results, lack of traditional Chinese medicine characteristics, uneven quantity and low quality of Chinese patent medicine literatures, and insufficient specification of instructions. In the future, high-quality clinical studies on this field should be actively carried out, and economic studies and clinical comprehensive evaluation of Chinese patent medicines should be strengthened to explore the characteristics and advantages of its treatment, so as to provide decision-making basis for finding the accurate clinical positioning and promoting the rational clinical application of Chinese patent medicines for treating digestive system diseases in children.

The purpose of this study was to compare the differences between uneven meibomian gland (MG) atrophy with and without Demodex infestation based on the index of uneven atrophy score (UAS). In this retrospective cohort study, 158 subjects were recruited, including 66 subjects in the Demodex-positive MGD group, 49 subjects in the Demodex-negative MGD group, and 43 subjects as normal control. No significant difference was verified in OSDI, TMH, TBUT, CFS, lid margin score, and meibograde (all p > 0.05) between the Demodex-positive MGD group and the Demodex-negative MGD group. The UAS index of the upper eyelid or both eyelids was significantly higher in the Demodex-positive group in comparison with the normal control group and Demodex-negative group and the difference was statistically significant between the three groups. The UAS was significantly positive correlation with OSDI (r = 0.209, p < 0.05), lid margin score (r = 0.287, p < 0.001), and meibograde (r = 0.356, p < 0.001), which has a significant negative correlation with TBUT (r = −0.248, p < 0.05). Thus, Demodex infestation can cause uneven MG atrophy and we propose a novel index of UAS, which is used to evaluate uneven atrophy of MGs and as a morphological index of Demodex infestation.

Grounded Situation Recognition (GSR) aims to generate structured semantic summaries of images for "human-like" event understanding. Specifically, GSR task not only detects the salient activity verb (e.g. buying), but also predicts all corresponding semantic roles (e.g. agent and goods). Inspired by object detection and image captioning tasks, existing methods typically employ a two-stage framework: 1) detect the activity verb, and then 2) predict semantic roles based on the detected verb. Obviously, this illogical framework constitutes a huge obstacle to semantic understanding. First, pre-detecting verbs solely without semantic roles inevitably fails to distinguish many similar daily activities (e.g., offering and giving, buying and selling). Second, predicting semantic roles in a closed auto-regressive manner can hardly exploit the semantic relations among the verb and roles. To this end, in this paper we propose a novel two-stage framework that focuses on utilizing such bidirectional relations within verbs and roles. In the first stage, instead of pre-detecting the verb, we postpone the detection step and assume a pseudo label, where an intermediate representation for each corresponding semantic role is learned from images. In the second stage, we exploit transformer layers to unearth the potential semantic relations within both verbs and semantic roles. With the help of a set of support images, an alternate learning scheme is designed to simultaneously optimize the results: update the verb using nouns corresponding to the image, and update nouns using verbs from support images. Recently, 5G networks have gradually surrounded our living environments to color our everyday lives and make our daily activities more convenient than before. However, in 5G networks, packet P transmitted from local UPFA of a 5G network, e.g., 5G-A, to UPFB in P’s destination 5G network, e.g., 5G-B, is not secure, even not encrypted, particularly via the Internet, A ≠ B. This conducts a risk of data leakage along the connection established between UPFA and UPFB. To solve this problem, in this study, we propose an architecture that encrypts/decrypts P to prevent it from being attacked. P is encrypted by an edge computer, e.g., ECA in 5G-A before it is sent to its destination, and decrypted by another edge computer, e.g., ECB in 5G-B. In this paper, the scenario includes data transmission between two users or among n-party users, n > 2. For the former, the cryptography systems used are symmetric and asymmetric encryption/decryption approaches. For the n-party scheme, we adopt Initial Key Agreement (IKA) mechanism which employs Upflow and Downflow processes to establish a secret key for all participating ECs. Besides, message authentication code, and time stamp are also utilized to enhance the security level of data transmission. Our analyses show that this proposed approach can effectively avoid some types of attacks.

Settlement and metamorphosis of planktonic larvae into benthic adults are critical components of a diverse range of marine invertebrate-mediated processes such as the formation of mussel beds and coral reefs, the recruitment of marine shellfisheries, and the initiation of macrobiofouling. Although larval settlement and metamorphosis induced by natural chemical cues is widespread among marine invertebrates, the mechanisms of action remain poorly understood. Here, we identified that the molecular target of adenosine (an inducer of larval settlement and metamorphosis from conspecific adults in the invasive biofouling mussel Mytilopsis sallei) is adenosine kinase (ADK). The results of transcriptomic analyses, pharmacological assays, temporal and spatial gene expression analyses, and siRNA interference, suggest that ATP-dependent phosphorylation of adenosine catalyzed by ADK activates the downstream AMPK-FoxO signaling pathway, inducing larval settlement and metamorphosis in M. sallei. This study not only reveals the role of the ADK-AMPK-FoxO pathway in larval settlement and metamorphosis of marine invertebrates but it also deepens our understanding of the functions and evolution of adenosine signaling, a process that is widespread in biology and important in medicine.

Blazed gratings are widely used in optical detection devices with the unique property of concentration of light energy to a desired diffraction order. However, traditional substrates for fabricating blazed gratings are easily damaged with the wear and tear in long-term usage under harsh conditions. Here, we propose the fabrication of blazed gratings on sapphire with high mechanical stability by femtosecond laser lithography combined with subsequent reactive ion etching (RIE). Various sapphire blazed gratings with periods from 2 μm to 10 μm and heights from 260 nm to 2 μm were realized to concentrate light energy (wavelengths of 405 nm, 532 nm and 633 nm) to different diffraction orders (1st, 2nd, and 3rd). The results provide great insights for the construction of micro-optical devices that have potential applications under harsh conditions.

The gut microbiota plays an important role in human health and disease. Stool, rectal swab and rectal mucosal tissue samples have been used in individual studies to survey the microbial community but the consequences of using these different sample types are not completely understood. In this study, we report differences in stool, rectal swab and rectal mucosal tissue microbial communities with shotgun metagenome sequencing of 1397 stool, swab and mucosal tissue samples from 240 participants. The taxonomic composition of stool and swab samples was distinct, but less different to each other than mucosal tissue samples. Functional profile differences between stool and swab samples are smaller, but mucosal tissue samples remained distinct from the other two types. When the taxonomic and functional profiles were used for inference in association with host phenotypes of age, sex, body mass index (BMI), antibiotics or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) use, hypothesis testing using either stool or rectal swab gave broadly significantly correlated results, but inference performed on mucosal tissue samples gave results that were generally less consistent with either stool or swab. Our study represents an important resource for determination of how inference can change for taxa and pathways depending on the choice of where to sample within the human gut.

Background Normoalbuminuric diabetic kidney disease (NADKD) is a newly defined DKD, the clinical features and pathogenesis for which are still being understood. This study aimed to investigate the features and risk factors for NADKD in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Methods A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted. The related clinical and laboratory data of patients with T2DM hospitalized between August 2012 and January 2020 were collected for statistical analysis. We classified the patients with T2DM into four groups on the basis of the presence or absence of albuminuria and reduced estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). Analysis of variance, the Kruskal–Wallis test, and the chi-square test were used to compare the groups. Binary logistic regression analyses with a forward stepwise method were performed to explore the risk factors for renal dysfunction in hospitalized patients with normoalbuminuric T2DM. Results Among the 1620 patients evaluated, 500 (30.9%) had DKD, of which 9% had NADKD. The prevalence of stroke, cardiovascular events, carotid plaque, and peripheral arterial disease in NADKD was significantly higher than in a non-DKD control group (normoalbuminuric T2DM patients with eGFR of ≥60 ml/min/1.73 m2). Regression analyses revealed that three significant independent factors were associated with NADKD: age (OR = 1.089, confidence interval [CI] 95% [1.055–1.123], p p = 0.011), and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c; OR = 0.839, CI 95% [0.716–0.983], p = 0.03). Conclusions NADKD is mainly associated with macrovascular rather than microvascular complications. NADKD is more common in patients with normoalbuminuric T2DM with older age, previous use of RASIs, and good glycemic control.

Rotated optical axis waveguides can facilitate on-chip arbitrary wave-plate operations, which are crucial tools for developing integrated universal quantum computing algorithms. In this paper, we propose a unique technique based on femtosecond laser direct writing technology to fabricate arbitrarily rotated optical axis waveguides. First, a circular isotropic main waveguide with a non-optical axis was fabricated using a beam shaping method. Thereafter, a trimming line was used to create an artificial stress field near the main waveguide to induce a rotated optical axis. Using this technique, we fabricated high-performance half- and quarter-wave plates. Subsequently, high-fidelity (97.1%) Pauli-X gate operation was demonstrated via quantum process tomography, which constitutes the basis for the full manipulation of on-chip polarization-encoded qubits. In the future, this work is expected to lead to new prospects for polarization-encoded information in photonic integrated circuits.

The formation mechanism of laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) has been a key to high-resolution sub-diffraction lithography or high-efficiency large-area nanotexturing. We show the evolution of LIPSS formation from a nanohole seed structure to high-spatial-frequency LIPSS by using a tightly focused and rectangular-shaped laser beam with different shape–polarization orientations. Formation of LIPSS based on light intensity distribution without invoking any long-range electromagnetic modes achieved quantitative match between modeling and experiment. Our results clearly show the entire step-like and deterministic process of LIPSS evolution based on experimental data and numerical simulations, revealing the dominant structural near-field enhancement on the ripple formation. A rectangular-shaped beam with an aspect ratio of 7:3 was used to break the symmetry of a circularly shaped focus. By azimuthally rotating the orientation of the focal spot and the polarization, it is possible to visualize the far-field effect for the initial seed structure formation and the competition between the far and near fields in the subsequent structure evolution.

Femtosecond laser direct writing (FsLDW) three-dimensional (3D) photonic integrated circuits (PICs) can realize arbitrary arrangement of waveguide arrays and coupling devices. Thus, they are capable of directly constructing arbitrary Hamiltonians and performing specific computing tasks crucial in quantum simulation and computation. However, the propagation constant β is limited to a narrow range in single-mode waveguides by solely changing the processing parameters, which greatly hinders the design of FsLDW PICs. This study proposes a composite waveguide (CWG) method to increase the range of β, where a new single-mode composite waveguide comprises two adjacent circular waveguides. As a result, the photon propagation can be controlled and the variation range of β can be efficiently enlarged by approximately two times (Δβ∼36 cm−1). With the CWG method, we successfully realize the most compact FsLDW directional couplers with a 9 μm pitch in a straight-line form and achieve the reconstruction of the Hamiltonian of a Hermitian array. Thus, the study represents a step further toward the fine control of the coupling between waveguides and compact integration of FsLDW PICs.

BACKGROUND Retrocorneal hyaline scrolls are a rare phenomenon. We report a case of bilateral retrocorneal hyaline scrolls that were likely induced by asymptomatic congenital syphilis. CASE SUMMARY A 71-year-old woman presented with blurred vision due to cataracts. Slit-lamp microscopy revealed bilateral hyaline scrolls with a dichotomous branching pattern extending to the anterior chamber or rods attaching to the rough posterior surface of the cornea. The patient was positive for syphilis-specific antibodies, with no ocular or systemic evidence of congenital or acquired syphilis. Binocular cataract, retrocorneal scroll, and corneal endothelial gutta were considered. The scroll of the right eye was removed during cataract surgery and further observed using hematoxylin–eosin staining and scanning electron microscopy. The cornea of the right eye remained transparent, and the residual scroll seemed stable, however, the corneal endothelial density declined at 13 mo after surgery. In vivo confocal microscopy revealed coalescence of corneal guttae at the level of the corneal endothelium or adhesion to the posterior surface of the endothelium, with enlarged endothelial cells in both eyes. Activated keratocytes in the stroma and a highly reflective acellular structure at the level of the Descemet’s membrane were observed. The removed scroll had a cartilage-like hardness and a circularly arranged fiber-like acellular structure. CONCLUSION Occult congenital syphilis could induce corneal endothelial gutta and the formation of retrocorneal scrolls without other signs of ocular syphilis.

Femtosecond laser additive manufacturing based on two-photon polymerization performs a useful technique for fabricating high-precision 3D structures. However, poor mechanical strength and low processing efficiency brought by near polymerization threshold processing to achieve high accuracy are still urgent problems. In this work, a definition-reinforcement-solidification (DRS) processing strategy is proposed to solve the current problems, in which DRS processing includes three steps: utilize a near-threshold femtosecond laser to accurately define the surface profile of 3D structures, perform enhanced scanning on the above structure's inner surface with a high-power femtosecond laser to increase the mechanical strength, and rapidly solidify the inner unpolymerized resin through one exposure of ultraviolet light to improve the processing efficiency. Compared with conventional near-threshold point-by-point direct writing, microstructures fabricated by the DRS strategy for a given geometry and polymer have hardness and Young's modulus values increase to 154% and 199%, respectively, and exhibit a 10000% improvement in machining efficiency without the loss of processing accuracy. Arbitrary complex 3D microstructures can be implemented rapidly via this strategy. This work will inject new vitality into two-photon polymerization additive manufacturing.

Low magnesium intakes coupled with high calcium intakes and high calcium-to-magnesium (Ca:Mg) intake ratios have been associated with increased risk for multiple chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome, as well as some cancers (colorectal, prostate, esophageal), and total mortality. A high dietary Ca:Mg ratio (>2.60) may affect body magnesium status while, on the other hand, high intakes of magnesium could adversely impact individuals with an exceedingly low dietary Ca:Mg ratio (3.00 since 2000. One-third of Americans consume a magnesium supplement with a mean dose of 146 mg/d, and 35% of Americans consume a calcium supplement with a mean dose of 479 mg/d. Our review of Ca:Mg ratios in dietary supplements sold in the United States and listed in NIH's Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD) found a mean ratio of 2.90 across all calcium- and magnesium-containing products, with differences by product form. The ratios ranged from a low of 0.10 in liquid products to a high of 48.5 in powder products. Thirty-one percent of products fell below, 40.5% fell within, and 28.3% fell above the ratio range of 1.70–2.60. Our findings of calculated Ca:Mg ratios from dietary supplements coupled with food-intake data suggest that, in individuals with high calcium intakes from diet and/or supplements, magnesium supplementation may be warranted to establish a more favorable dietary Ca:Mg ratio in their total diet. Additional research may provide greater insight into whether the Ca:Mg ratio is a biomarker of interest for moderating chronic disease and which population groups may derive benefit from moderating that ratio.

In recent years, femtosecond laser direct writing technology has made great progress in integrated quantum photonic circuits due to its advantages of applicability to an extensive range of materials and true 3-D ability. However, a waveguide prepared via a femtosecond laser shows a non-circular cross section and high birefringence, which seriously restricts the development of polarization encoded quantum photonic integrated chips towards greater integration and higher functions. Here, we propose an amplitude-phase double shaping method to reduce waveguide birefringence, which involves using a cylindrical lens and slits. A waveguide prepared using this method shows a circularity cross-section that reaches up to 97.6% and a birefringence that is as low as 1.49 × 10−6. Based on such an ultralow birefringence waveguide, a polarization independent Hong-Ou-Mandel quantum interferometer was fabricated. Interference visibilities for identical photon pairs in different polarization states were found to be more than 95% with a standard deviation of 0.6%. The ultra-low birefringence single-mode waveguide and the polarization-independent interferometer realized using this approach will play an important role in large-scale polarization encoding integrated quantum photonic chips.
