The objective of this study was to address the role of gully erosion on sediment delivery at the catchment scale by assessing the contribution of gullies to the total sediment yield at the outlet of the Kamech (Cape Bon, Tunisia), which is a small cultivated catchment in the Mediterranean environment. The methodology was based on the long-term analysis of the evolution of gully volume, and the total volume of sediment that reached the catchment outlet. The evolution of gully volume was assessed by field surveys and image analysis. The total volume of sediment was calculated using intensive field monitoring of the runoff and erosion in the reservoir at the catchment outlet. The contribution of gullies to the total flux of sediment that reached the catchment outlet was estimated to be less than 30%. This means that siltation of the reservoir was mainly due to erosion processes other than gully erosion, i.e., topsoil erosion processes such as rill and interrill erosion in cropland areas. This result was consistent with a previous independent estimation of the apportionment of gully and topsoil erosion sources conducted at the same site using the fingerprinting approach. Therefore, the study confirms that, even in a heavily eroded agricultural catchment area with a dense network of gullies, gully erosion nevertheless accounted for less than 30% of the total erosion balance. The results also showed that the cumulated gully length has decreased in the last fifty years, thus revealing the declining role of gullies. However, the decrease in gully activity could not be linked to an isolated factor. Complementary observations, such as the appearance of vegetation in the permanent gullies and the decrease in the percentage of active gullies, showed that the degree of hydro-sedimentary connectivity in the Kamech catchment has probably entered a decreasing phase. We also analysed the potential use of historical aerial images for studying gully erosion. We found that these images were useful for calculating accurate ortho-photography but failed to provide a DEM with the precision required to measure the historical volume of gullies. Abstract: Erosion and deposition rates were quantified in a vineyard context (Languedoc, France) using a method based on vine-stock bio-markers. The within-field spatial structure of erosion (Field Erosive State) was described based on maps of “unearthing” height of vine-stock. The factors affecting variability of soil erosion (slope gradient, slope length, soil type, and field boundaries characteristics) were analysed in relation to quantitative and spatial erosion data. When this method was applied to a sample of 49 fields, the intensity of erosion in the study area (mean erosion rate=10.5t ha− 1 year− 1) showed a high variability between fields. The Field Erosive States (FES) were classified into five categories based on the intensity and spatial structure of the erosion, such as uniform erosion of the field, transfer of sediments from upslope to downslope regions and concentrated erosion on rills. Cyanobacteria are widespread photosynthetic microorganisms among which some are able to fix atmospheric nitrogen. We investigated the impact of indigenous cyanobacteria strains ( Nostoc) inoculation on physical characteristics of poorly aggregated soils from Guquka (Eastern Cape, South Africa). The soil aggregates (3–5 mm) were arranged into a layer of 10–20 mm thick, and sprayed with cyanobacteria solution. Subsequently the inoculated and un-inoculated samples were incubated (30°C, 80% humidity, continuous illumination at 100 μmol m−2 s−1). Their micromorphological characteristics and aggregate stability were investigated, after 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 weeks of incubation, by using high resolution Cryo-SEM and aggregate breakdown tests. Micromorphological investigations revealed that the surface of un-inoculated samples remained uncovered, while the inoculated samples were partially covered by cyanobacteria material after one week of incubation. A dense superficial network of cyanobacterial filaments and extracellular polymer secretions (EPS) covered their surface after 4 and 6 weeks of incubation. Organo-mineral aggregates comprising cyanobacterial filaments and EPS were observed after 6 weeks of incubation. The results of aggregate breakdown tests showed no significant difference between un-inoculated samples after 1, 2, 3, 4 or 6 weeks, while they revealed improvement of aggregate stability for inoculated samples. The improvement of aggregate stability appeared in a short while following inoculation and increased gradually with time and cyanobacteria growth. The increase in aggregate stability is likely related to the changes induced in micromorphological characteristics by cyanobacterial filaments and EPS. It reflects the effect of coating, enmeshment, binding and gluing of aggregates and isolated mineral particles by cyanobacteria material. Our study presents new data demonstrating the improvement of soil physical quality in a few weeks after cyanobacteria inoculation. Abstract: An experiment has been carried out in order to both measure the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity of a soil crust when it is developing and to characterize its macro- and microstructural evolution. Five stages of a structural crust developing in a loamy clay soil have been identified. Mercury intrusion experiments and micromorphological descriptions have provided information on the structural evolution of the crust at the microscale. Quantitative image analysis from images of the crust microstructure has led to the definition of a particle erosion index at the microscopic scale, which is the mean chord length calculated in the solid phase. This index decreases from 60 to 11 μm during the whole experiment, the lowest value being recorded at the fourth stage. Specific measurements of the percolation threshold in the soil crust at different stages during its formation have given quantitative data to interpret the modifications of the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity of this crust when it develops. The percolation threshold decreases from 130 μm at the second stage down to 40 μm at the fifth stage. Between the same stages, the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity at −5 kPa decreases from 12.2 to 4.7 cm/h. Both the structural information given by the chord size distribution and the functional information obtained from the percolation threshold can be related to propose a new model of soil crusting. Aims: Heterogeneous canopies in temperate montane forests affect microclimate and soil characteristics, with important effects on soil microbial communities and related processes. Here, we studied the interactions between plant root traits and soil bacterial and fungal communities in closed forest and open gaps in a mixed forest along an elevational gradient in the French Alps (1400, 1700 and 2000 m). Methods: Samples were separated into three fractions (plant root, rhizosphere and bulk soil), to further investigate the influence of plant zones on microbial communities. Bacterial (16S) and fungal (ITS) biodiversity was determined using high throughput sequencing, along with standard measures of soil, litter and root traits. Results: We found that (i) microbial community diversity was higher in gaps than in closed forest because of increased root trait diversity and density; (ii) open versus closed forest patches affected phylogenetic dispersion despite differences in elevations with phylogenetic clustering in closed forest; (iii) the interaction between root traits and microbial communities was stronger for rhizosphere and root fractions than for bulk soil and (iv) bacterial community composition was better explained by root traits than for fungi. Conclusions: Our findings highlight the importance of open gaps versus closed forest patches and associated root traits affecting microbial community structure, particularly for bacterial assemblages that exhibited a stronger interaction with root traits than for fungi. Abstract Soil erosion is the primary process driving land degradation. Using multiple scales of management to minimize soil erosion is crucial to achieve land degradation neutrality targets within the Sustainable Development Goals agenda. Land management (LM) influences both on-site and off-site erosion on the event-scale and over the long-term. However, each LM differs in effectiveness depending on the temporal scale considered. In order to understand how LM effects internal and external catchment dynamics, we apply LandSoil, a physically based landscape evolution model, to evaluate 7 LM scenarios over long- (30 years) and short-terms (event scale). LM scenarios included changes in land use and/or landscape structure. Under current LM, mean surface soil erosion was ∼0.69 ± 39·10−3 m over 30 years. In contrast, a single extreme event (435 mm/24 h) in January resulted in ∼0.62 ± 3·10−3 m loss and ∼0.04 ± 2·10−3 m if it occurred in October. Heterogeneous patterns of erosion and deposition developed after 30 years, whereas extreme events dominantly showed soil loss and high catchment connectivity. Effectiveness of LM in erosion mitigation and sediment trapping differed according to temporal and spatial scales for each scenario. We concluded that multiple temporal and spatial scales must be incorporated in order to adaptively manage land degradation and meet neutrality targets. The structural stability of soil is a physical characteristic that affects soil degradation processes. Calcium‐based amendments, such as calcium carbonate, calcium sulfate, and calcium oxide/hydroxide, have been shown to improve the stability of soil aggregates. This study seeks to determine which calcium‐based soil amendments, and at what concentration, are the most efficient in improving aggregate stability of sandy topsoils derived from granitic and metamorphic parent materials, and to analyze the mechanisms involved. In the pot experiment, soils amended with CaCO3, CaCl2, and CaSO4 did not present significant differences in aggregate stability compared to the control or among each other. In contrast, Ca(OH)2 soil amendment brought the greatest stability to the soil aggregates. A dose of 1% Ca(OH)2 significantly increased the stability of soil aggregates. This effect is due to the reaction of Ca(OH)2 with atmospheric CO2 which leads to the formation of CaCO3, a delayed reaction not showed by the other soil amendments tested. Likewise, the greater solubility of Ca(OH)2 compared to CaCO3 exerts a greater aggregation effect on soil. Thus, the mechanism of action of Ca(OH)2 is related to cementation, rather than flocculation. Future studies should be carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness of Ca(OH)2 under field conditions. Aims: The aim of this study was to explore the impact of soil management strategies and the contribution of root traits of plant communities and soil organic carbon (SOC) in explaining soil aggregate stability in vineyards.Methods: We measured topsoil aggregate stability, soil properties and root traits of 38 plant communities in an experimental vineyard, previously subjected to different soil management strategies. Then we investigated statistical relations between aggregate stability, root traits and SOC and estimated root trait and SOC contributions to gain insight into aggregate stability.Results: Soil management strategies strongly affected soil aggregate stability, with a negative effect of tillage, even after several years of service crop cover. Among the investigated parameters, soil organic carbon was found to contribute the most to aggregate stability. Root mean diameter and root mass density showed positive correlations with aggregate stability, while specific root length showed a negative correlation with aggregate stability.Conclusions: Soil aggregate stability is the result of complex interactions between soil management strategies, soil properties and plant root traits. Service crops improve aggregate stability, and a trait-based approach could help to identify service crop ideotypes and expand the pool of species of interest for providing services in agroecosystems in relation with the soil physical quality. Soil aggregate stability is a key factor in soil resistance to water erosion, which is a threat to soils in a large part of northern Tunisia. The analysis of the spatial variability of soil aggregate stability provides both agronomic and environmentally useful information. However, extensive measurements of soil aggregate stability remain tedious and expensive. This study explores two different approaches as alternative to measurements of soil aggregate stability. One approach estimated aggregate stability via laboratory measurements of soil elementary properties using multiple linear regressions known as pedotransfer functions. The second approach, which is methodologically innovating, was based on the geological pattern as a proxy for aggregate stability using regression-kriging analysis. A set of 113 soil samples from an 800 km 2 agricultural region that included the Lebna watershed (Cap Bon, Tunisia) were collected from the soil surface layer (0–10 cm depth). Samples were analyzed for elementary properties (i.e., soil texture, total carbon and nitrogen, iron, CaCO 3 , salinity, CEC and pH) and for soil aggregate stability according to the normalized method (ISO/DIS 10930, 2012), which considers three indexes (MWD) calculated for three contrasted wetting conditions and disruptive energies. Most soils in the study area were non-salted with an alkaline pH and relatively low organic carbon content. Of the soils, 35% were clay soils, and 55% had a balanced soil texture. The average of the three soil aggregate stability indexes (MWD mean ) ranged from 0.38 to 2.80 mm, and this property showed large variability from instable soils to very stable ones. Analysis of pedotransfer functions determined that the best predictor variables for soil aggregate stability were silt, organic matter and iron. Geostatistical analyses at the regional scale showed spatially structured soil aggregate stability (variograms with sills reaching a 5 km distance). Using geological information as ancillary data, the prediction of soil aggregate stability with regression-kriging was similar to that of pedotransfer functions. A regression-kriged map of soil aggregate stability associated with a map of prediction uncertainties was developed. Soil aggregates are organomineral associations with a fundamental importance for soil structure and function. Litter from vegetation alters aggregate formation and stability, and polyphenols such as tannins found in leaves, roots and wood play an important role in soil biogeochemical and biological processes. However, the effect of tannins on soil physical properties remains largely unexplored. We hypothesized that tannins influence aggregate stability through their ability to (i) complex proteins in the soil and (ii) perturb the gelling property of root mucilage. Therefore, Mediterranean soil aggregates were incubated with condensed tannins, either as a pure substrate or in combination with a standard protein (bovine serum albumin, BSA) and with a model root mucilage polysaccharide (polygalacturonic acid, PGA) able to form gel-like structures with divalent cations (notably Ca 2+ ) widely present in Mediterranean calcareous soils. The changes in aggregate stability were monitored under controlled conditions, immediately after the addition of tannins, after 2 weeks, 3 and 6 months of incubation. Tannins added alone did not yield a significant effect on aggregate stability. However, modulatory effects were found when combinations of treatments occurred. Tannins positively modulated the stabilizing effect of the BSA, giving credit to our hypothesis on the stabilizing role of the tannin-protein complex forming macromolecules, thus enforcing soil particle cohesion within aggregates. However, tannins negatively altered the stabilizing effect of PGA, suggesting that the expected perturbation of the PGA gelation occurred, with detrimental consequences for aggregate stability. Over time, tannins maintained the effect of BSA, suggesting a protective effect of tannins, possibly linked to their ability to slow down the degradation of nitrogen compounds through protein binding. Overall, we showed that tannins reacted with other organic compounds resulting in specific effects on physical soil properties, thus demonstrating that tannins in soils play a role beyond their effects on biogeochemical aspects. The objective of this study was to simulate the evolution of soil erosion in a semi-arid mountainous watershed (225 km 2 , High Atlas Mountains, Morocco) under different scenarios of climate and land use change to the end of 21st century. Erosion plots monitored over four years showed spatially contrasted results. Most of the soils produced from 0.015 to 2.5 t ha −1 y −1 , whereas badlands produced 350 t ha −1 y −1 . The average sediment yield measured at the outlet during the same period was approximately 4 t ha −1 y −1 . The STREAM distributed erosion model was parameterized using these field measurements (infiltration rates and runoff sediment concentrations). The results showed an overall agreement between the modelled and measured annual cumulative sediment yields. Simulations of the ARPEGE meteorological model were used for the 1960–1990 and 2070–2100 periods. The changes between these two periods were downscaled using three different methods, decreasing annual precipitations by 10–14%, although with more rainfall in summer and fall. Climate change alone increased sediment yield by 4.7–10.1%. However, simulations showed that land use changes might potentially induce much larger changes in erosion (up to 250%), approximately proportional to the evolution of the extension of badlands. Global climate and land use changes could strongly affect soil erosion and the capability of soils to sustain agriculture and in turn impact regional or global food security. The objective of our study was to develop a method to assess soil sustainability to erosion under changes in land use and climate. The method was applied in a typical mixed Mediterranean landscape in a wine-growing watershed (75 km 2 ) within the Languedoc region (La Peyne, France) for two periods: a first period with the current climate and land use and a second period with the climate and land use scenarios at the end of the twenty-first century. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change A1B future rainfall scenarios from the Météo France General circulation model was coupled with four contrasting land use change scenarios that were designed using a spatially-explicit land use change model. Mean annual erosion rate was estimated with an expert-based soil erosion model. Soil life expectancy was assessed using soil depth. Soil erosion rate and soil life expectancy were combined into a sustainability index. The median simulated soil erosion rate for the current period was 3.5 t/ha/year and the soil life expectancy was 273 years, showing a low sustainability of soils. For the future period with the same land use distribution, the median simulated soil erosion rate was 4.2 t/ha/year and the soil life expectancy was 249 years. The results show that soil erosion rate and soil life expectancy are more sensitive to changes in land use than to changes in precipitation. Among the scenarios tested, institution of a mandatory grass cover in vineyards seems to be an efficient means of significantly improving soil sustainability, both in terms of decreased soil erosion rates and increased soil life expectancies. Abstract: Inappropriate agricultural land management practices cause irreversible soil losses in many parts of Europe. Soil degradation is predicted to increase in the next future as an effect of climate and cropping system changes. The most concerned areas are expected to be those already severely affected by erosion, as is the whole of the Mediterranean. Medium-term soil erosion models could be useful tools to analyse, understand and simulate complex interactions between geomorphic processes and human pressures for better assessment of medium-term soil redistributions associated with land use and landscape design change. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of various agricultural land uses and landscape design strategies on water and tillage erosion. The first step was to develop land use and landscape design scenarios of an agricultural Mediterranean landscape. Then, all of the scenarios were compared in terms of the soil redistribution using the LandSoil model. The results indicate that potential soil conservation associated with the adoption of sustainable land uses surpasses the potential conservation associated with certain landscape design. A detailed analysis of within-landscape soil redistributions suggests that land use is a major factor controlling sediment production, whereas landscape design is a major factor controlling hillslope connectivity. Abstract: To preserve the quality of surface water, official French regulations require farmers to keep a minimum acreage of grassland, especially bordering rivers. These agro-environmental measures do not account for the circulation of water within the catchment. This paper examines whether it is possible to design with the farmers agri-environmental measures at field and catchment scale to prevent soil erosion and surface water pollution. To support this participatory approach, the hydrology and erosion model STREAM was used for assessing the impact of a spring stormy event on surface runoff and sediment yield with various management scenarios. The study was carried out in collaboration with an agricultural committee in an area of south-western France where erosive runoff has a major impact on the quality of surface water. Two sites (A and B) were chosen with farmers to discuss ways of reducing total surface runoff and sediment yield at each site. The STREAM model was used to assess surface runoff and sediment yield under current cropping pattern at each site and to evaluate management scenarios including grass strips implementation or changes in cropping patterns within the catchment. The results of STREAM simulations were analysed jointly by farmers and researchers. Moreover, the farmers discussed each scenario in terms of its technical and economical feasibility. STREAM simulations showed that a 40 mm spring rainfall with current cropping patterns led to 3116 m3 total water runoff and 335 metric tons of sediment yield at site A, and 3249 m3 and 241 metric tons at site B. Grass strips implementation could reduce runoff for about 40% and sediment yield for about 50% at site A. At site B, grass strips could reduce runoff and sediment yield for more than 50%, but changes in cropping pattern could reduce it almost totally. The simulations led to three main results: (i) grass strips along rivers and ditches prevented soil sediments from entering the surface water but did not reduce soil losses, (ii) crop redistribution within the catchment was as efficient as planting grass strips, and (iii) efficient management of erosive runoff required coordination between all the farmers using the same watershed. Abstract: Soil erosion leads to important environmental problems (e.g. muddy floods, reservoir sedimentation) in cultivated areas of the European loess belt. This study aimed to determine the impact of rainfall seasonality and land use change on soil erosion over the last 40 years in a 94-ha cultivated catchment of Normandy (France). To this end, scenarios representative of the different land use conditions were simulated using the STREAM expert-based erosion model. A 13 years long sequence of rainfall events was run with this model. Results showed that erosion increased dramatically after land consolidation (+168% on average). Interannual variability of erosion is important. After land consolidation, 79% of erosion was observed in summer and autumn, even though these seasons only accounted for 58% of annual rainfall kinetic energy. The bulk of erosion was hence produced by a few intense thunderstorms during this period. Thunderstorms correspond to 5% of rainfall events and to 15% of the total rainfall depth, but they generate 51% of total annual erosion after land consolidation (and up to 57% of erosion before land consolidation). Confrontation of the STREAM model outputs with the erosion rates modelled based on Cs-137 measurements suggested that soil redistribution within the catchment was very high but that sediment exports from the catchment remained limited (sediment delivery ratio between 1% and 10%). Local erosion rates derived from Cs-137 measurements showed an important and organised spatial variability, but erosion rates integrated over larger areas remained in the same order of magnitude as those simulated by the STREAM model or were slightly higher. Water erosion would hence not be the only process generating erosion within this catchment. Abstract: During the last decades, the European loess belt has been confronted with a significant increase in environmental problems due to erosion on agricultural land. Spatially distributed runoff and erosion models operating at the catchment scale are therefore needed to evaluate the impact of potential mitigation measures. Expert-based models offer an alternative solution to process-based and empirical models, but their decision rules are only valid for the local conditions for which they have been derived. The STREAM model, which was developed in Normandy (France), has been applied in two Belgian catchments having a similar soil texture, as well as in a catchment of southern France differing by soil, land use and climate characteristics. The performance of hydrological models can be assessed for instance by calculating the Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency criterion (E NS). When applied to Belgium, the model results are satisfactory to good after an adaptation of the decision rules (0.90< E NS <0.93 for runoff predictions and 0.85< E NS <0.89 for erosion predictions). Given the important environmental differences between Normandy and southern France, the model rules were also adapted for application in the latter environment. Unfortunately, the quality of runoff predictions was insufficient to simulate erosion in southern France. In conclusion, STREAM is a reliable model providing satisfactory runoff and erosion predictions in the regions where hortonian overland flow dominates. Nevertheless, an adaptation of decision rules based on local multi-scale (plot, field, catchment) data is needed, before running the model. Splash is an essential process in interrill erosion because it detaches soil fragments front their substrate and transports them. However, splash measurements are difficult to interpret and relatively little is known about the influence of particle characteristics on the spatial distribution of splash. The objective of this work is to study the splash distribution of different size fractions for aggregated soils. We used a recently proposed theory for spatial distribution by splash to interpret experimental data on the radial distribution of soil fragments splashed by simulated rainfall. A laboratory device with five concentric rings was used to determine average splash lengths for 16 fragment size fractions (0.05 to >2000 μm) of rout soils. Sieved soil (3- to 5-mm size fraction) was exposed to simulated rainfall at 29 mm h-1 and with a time-specific kinetic energy of 252 J m-2 h-1. We interpreted the measured masses of fragments splashed into the different rings using an approximate solution of the exponential splash distribution theory applied to the experimental design. We demonstrated that the theory is valid for hulk aggregated soil as well as for individual fragment size fractions. The derived average splash lengths ranged from 4 to 23 cm, depending on the fragment size and soil. Splash lengths were greatest for soil fragments of 100 to 200 μm, and decreased for finer and coarser size fractions. Comparison of these findings with physically-based theory suggests that the coarser fragments, 50 to 2000 μm, are transported as single airborne particles, whereas the smaller ones. <50 μm, are transported in groups in splash droplets. Soil aggregates are critical to soil functionality, but there remain many uncertainties with respect to the role of biotic factors in forming aggregates. Understanding the interacting effects of soil, land use type, vegetation and microbial communities is a major challenge that needs assessment in both field and controlled laboratory conditions, as well as in bulk and rhizosphere soils. To address these effects and their feedbacks, we first examined the influence of soil, root and litter characteristics along a land use gradient (ancient woodland, secondary woodland, grassland, pasture and arable land) on microbial community structure (in both bulk and rhizosphere soil), as well as on aggregate stability. Then, we performed an inoculation experiment where we extracted soil columns from the arable and secondary woodland and used a third unstructured loamy soil as a control. We sterilized these three soils to remove microbial communities, and then inoculated the tops of sterilized soil columns with soil from the secondary woodland or the arable field sites. Control columns of all soil types were not inoculated. In a fully-crossed design, we planted two species possessing distinct root system morphologies: Brachypodium sylvaticum (fibrous system with many thin and fine roots) and Urtica dioica (taproot system with few fine roots). After four months, microbial communities (in bulk and rhizospheric soil) and aggregate stability were measured, along with root traits. In both the field and laboratory experiments, bacterial (16S) and fungal (ITS) diversity was determined using high throughput sequencing. In the field study we found that: i) there were strong relationships between aggregate stability and microbial community composition that were driven by land use, ii) the relationship between aggregate stability along the land use gradient and the trophic nature of bacterial communities was not significant, but certain soil, root and litter parameters shaped bacterial phyla, with oligotrophic bacteria conditioned by the rhizosphere niche, and copiotrophic phyla more dependent on bulk soil conditions, iii) land use gradient (from woodland to arable), reduced the relative abundance of saprotrophic and ectomycorrhizal fungi with an increase in the relative abundance of Ascomycota and a reduction in the relative abundance of Basidiomycota. In the laboratory experiment we found that: i) the inoculation of sterilized soils with soils from the field significantly increased aggregate stability in control soil that was initially poorly structured, ii) the effects of inoculation on aggregate stability were similar when either secondary woodland or arable soils were used as inoculums and iii) these effects were impacted significantly by root length density. Erosion and mass wasting processes on mountain slopes can benefit from or be adversely affected by the presence of biopores formed by plant root systems or soil fauna. The relationship between biopores and subsurface flow during rainstorms is poorly understood. Here, we examined the link between subsurface flow and biopores formed through different processes, including soil faunal activity and abundance of fine and coarse roots. As the distribution of biopores is influenced by the type of vegetation present, we investigated the effect of plant diversity (forest with or without understorey vegetation) on the pattern of water infiltration throughout the soil. We hypothesized that increased species diversity would enhance the extension of subsurface flow because biopores would be distributed throughout the soil profile and that more coarse roots would create large biopores, increasing subsurface flow. In situ experiments were conducted on hillslopes with plantations of rubber trees (Hevea brasiliensis) growing on terraces, or with secondary mixed forests, in the tropical zone of Yunnan province, China. Three sites with Ferralsol soils and different vegetation types were examined: (1) plantation with no understorey; (2) clear-cut plantation with understorey; and (3) secondary mixed forest with understorey. Irrigation experiments with Brilliant Blue FCF dyed water were performed upslope of trees at each site and staining patterns resulting from infiltrated dyed water were examined at two different scales. After dye irrigation, soil was removed in 1.0 × 0.8 m slices starting 1 m downslope and soil profiles were photographed for subsequent mapping of dyed areas in the profile (macroscale). Each profile was then divided into a 0.1 × 0.1 m grid (microscale) and burrows formed by macrofauna and fine and coarse root densities were measured. At the macroscale, the greatest lateral extension in subsurface flow occurred in the natural forest and the least in the rubber tree plantation with no understorey vegetation. At the microscale, and in all types of vegetation, fine roots significantly increased the incidence of subsurface flow compared to coarse roots and macrofauna activity. We conclude that in tropical Ferralsols, fine roots, and hence understorey vegetation, play a positive role in promoting subsurface flow and therefore reducing water erosion and mass wasting processes.
