351. Continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion alters microRNA expression and glycaemic variability in children with type 1 diabetes

Abstract

Abstract To determine whether continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) vs. multiple daily injections (MDI) therapy from near-diagnosis of type 1 diabetes is associated with reduced glycaemic variability (GV) and altered microRNA (miRNAs) expression. Adolescents (74% male) within 3-months of diabetes diagnosis (n = 27) were randomized to CSII (n = 12) or MDI. HbA1c, 1-5-Anhydroglucitol (1,5-AG), high sensitivity C-peptide and a custom TaqMan qPCR panel of 52 miRNAs were measured at baseline and follow-up (median (LQ-UQ); 535 (519–563) days). There were no significant differences between groups in baseline or follow-up HbA1c or C-peptide, nor baseline miRNAs. Mean ± SD 1,5-AG improved with CSII vs. MDI (3.1 ± 4.1 vs. − 2.2 ± − 7.0 mg/ml respectively, P = 0.029). On follow-up 11 miRNAs associated with diabetes vascular complications had altered expression in CSII-users. Early CSII vs. MDI use is associated with lower GV and less adverse vascular-related miRNAs. Relationships with future complications are of interest.

Abstract

Abstract Disruptions resulting from an epidemic might often appear to amount to chaos but, in reality, can be understood in a systematic way through the lens of “epidemic psychology”. According to Philip Strong, the founder of the sociological study of epidemic infectious diseases, not only is an epidemic biological; there is also the potential for three psycho-social epidemics: of fear, moralization, and action. This work empirically tests Strong’s model at scale by studying the use of language of 122M tweets related to the COVID-19 pandemic posted in the U.S. during the whole year of 2020. On Twitter, we identified three distinct phases. Each of them is characterized by different regimes of the three psycho-social epidemics. In the refusal phase, users refused to accept reality despite the increasing number of deaths in other countries. In the anger phase (started after the announcement of the first death in the country), users’ fear translated into anger about the looming feeling that things were about to change. Finally, in the acceptance phase, which began after the authorities imposed physical-distancing measures, users settled into a “new normal” for their daily activities. Overall, refusal of accepting reality gradually died off as the year went on, while acceptance increasingly took hold. During 2020, as cases surged in waves, so did anger, re-emerging cyclically at each wave. Our real-time operationalization of Strong’s model is designed in a way that makes it possible to embed epidemic psychology into real-time models (e.g., epidemiological and mobility models).

Abstract

Online debates typically possess a large number of argumentative comments. Most readers who would like to see which comments are winning arguments often only read a part of the debate. Many platforms that host such debates allow for the comments to be sorted, say from the earliest to latest. How can argumentation theory be used to evaluate the effectiveness of such policies of sorting comments, in terms of the actually winning arguments displayed to a reader who may not have read the whole debate? We devise a pipeline that captures an online debate tree as a bipolar argumentation framework (BAF), which is sorted depending on the policy, giving a sequence of induced sub-BAFs representing how and how much of the debate has been read. Each sub-BAF has its own set of winning arguments, which can be quantitatively compared to the set of winning arguments of the whole BAF. We apply this pipeline to evaluate policies on Kialo debates, where it is shown that reading comments from most to least liked, on average, displays more winners than reading comments earliest first. Therefore, in Kialo, reading comments from most to least liked is on average more effective than reading from the earliest to the most recent.

Abstract The aim of this cross-sectional study was to compare plasma C-peptide presence and levels in people without diabetes (CON) and with Type 1 diabetes and relate C-peptide status to clinical factors. In a subset we evaluated 50 microRNAs (miRs) previously implicated in beta-cell death and associations with clinical status and C-peptide levels. Diabetes age of onset was stratified as adult (≥ 18 y.o) or childhood ( 20 years. Plasma C-peptide was measured by ultrasensitive ELISA. Plasma miRs were quantified using TaqMan probe-primer mix on an OpenArray platform. Abstract

BackgroundConservative management may be a desirable option for elderly, fragile, or demented patients who reach end-stage renal disease (ESRD), yet some patients with dementia are placed on renal replacement therapy nonetheless.MethodsFrom a nationwide cohort of 45,076 US veterans who transitioned to ESRD over 4 contemporary years (October 1, 2007 to September 30, 2011), we identified 1,336 (3.0%) patients with International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification code-based dementia diagnosis during the prelude (predialysis) period. We examined the association of prelude dementia with all-cause mortality within the first 6 months following transition to dialysis, using a propensity-matched cohort and Cox proportional hazards models.ResultsIn the entire cohort, the overall mean ± standard deviation age at baseline was 72 ± 11 years, 95% were male, 23% were African-American, and 66% were diabetic. There were 8,080 (18.5%) deaths (mortality rate, 412; 95% confidence interval [CI], 403-421/1,000 patient-years) in the dementia-negative group, and 396 (29.6%) deaths (mortality rate, 708; 95% CI, 642-782/1,000 patient-years) in the dementia-positive group in the entire cohort in the first 6 months after dialysis initiation. Presence of dementia was associated with higher risk of all-cause mortality (adjusted hazard ratio, 1.25; 95% CI, 1.12-1.38) compared to dementia-free patients in the first 6 months after dialysis initiation.ConclusionPre-ESRD dementia is associated with increased risk of early post-ESRD mortality in veterans transitioning to dialysis.

A panel of experts highlighted developments, challenges, and opportunities in this burgeoning area, and discussed research on the disproportionate exposure experienced by communities of color; the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's regulatory actions; and ongoing advocacy efforts. Abstract

CD4+ T cells recognize peptide antigens presented on class II major histocompatibility complex (MHC-II) molecules to carry out their function. The remarkable diversity of T cell receptor sequences and lack of antigen discovery approaches for MHC-II make profiling the specificities of CD4+ T cells challenging. We have expanded our platform of signaling and antigen-presenting bifunctional receptors to encode MHC-II molecules presenting covalently linked peptides (SABR-IIs) for CD4+ T cell antigen discovery. SABR-IIs can present epitopes to CD4+ T cells and induce signaling upon their recognition, allowing a readable output. Furthermore, the SABR-II design is modular in signaling and deployment to T cells and B cells. Here, we demonstrate that SABR-IIs libraries presenting endogenous and non-contiguous epitopes can be used for antigen discovery in the context of type 1 diabetes. SABR-II libraries provide a rapid, flexible, scalable and versatile approach for de novo identification of CD4+ T cell ligands from single-cell RNA sequencing data using experimental and computational approaches.

370. ISCUTE: Instance Segmentation of Cables Using Text Embedding

Abstract

In the field of robotics and automation, conventional object recognition and instance segmentation methods face a formidable challenge when it comes to perceiving Deformable Linear Objects (DLOs) like wires, cables, and flexible tubes. This challenge arises primarily from the lack of distinct attributes such as shape, color, and texture, which calls for tailored solutions to achieve precise identification. In this work, we propose a foundation model-based DLO instance segmentation technique that is text-promptable and user-friendly. Specifically, our approach combines the text-conditioned semantic segmentation capabilities of CLIPSeg model with the zero-shot generalization capabilities of Segment Anything Model (SAM). We show that our method exceeds SOTA performance on DLO instance segmentation, achieving a mIoU of $91.21\%$. We also introduce a rich and diverse DLO-specific dataset for instance segmentation.

371. A Multivariate to Bivariate Reduction for Noncommutative Rank and Related Results

We study the noncommutative rank problem, ncRANK, of computing the rank of matrices with linear entries in $n$ noncommuting variables and the problem of noncommutative Rational Identity Testing, RIT, which is to decide if a given rational formula in $n$ noncommuting variables is zero on its domain of definition. Motivated by the question whether these problems have deterministic NC algorithms, we revisit their interrelationship from a parallel complexity point of view. We show the following results: 1. Based on Cohn's embedding theorem \cite{Co90,Cohnfir} we show deterministic NC reductions from multivariate ncRANK to bivariate ncRANK and from multivariate RIT to bivariate RIT. 2. We obtain a deterministic NC-Turing reduction from bivariate $\RIT$ to bivariate ncRANK, thereby proving that a deterministic NC algorithm for bivariate ncRANK would imply that both multivariate RIT and multivariate ncRANK are in deterministic NC., Comment: 31 pages

Abstract

We study the correlation between the value of the triple Higgs coupling and the nature of the electroweak phase transition. We use an effective potential approach, including higher order, non-renormalizable terms coming from integrating out new physics. We show that if only the dimension six operators are considered, large positive deviations of the triple Higgs coupling from its Standard Model (SM) value are predicted in the regions of parameter space consistent with a strong first order electroweak phase transition (SFOEPT). We also show that at higher orders sizable and negative deviations of the triple Higgs coupling may be obtained, and the sign of the corrections tends to be correlated with the order of the phase transition. We also consider a singlet extension of the SM, which allows us to establish the connection with the effective field theory (EFT) approach and analyze the limits of its validity. Furthermore, we study how to probe the triple Higgs coupling from the double Higgs production at the LHC. We show that selective cuts in the invariant mass of the two Higgs bosons should be used, to maximize the sensitivity for values of the triple Higgs coupling significantly different from the Standard Model one., Comment: 43 pages, 4 figures

Non-hermitian, $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric Hamiltonians, experimentally realized in optical systems, accurately model the properties of open, bosonic systems with balanced, spatially separated gain and loss. We present a family of exactly solvable, two-dimensional, $\mathcal{PT}$ potentials for a non-relativistic particle confined in a circular geometry. We show that the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry threshold can be tuned by introducing a second gain-loss potential or its hermitian counterpart. Abstract

The effects of viscosity and small-scale atomic-level mixing on plasmas in inertial confinement fusion (ICF) currently represent challenges in ICF research. Many current ICF hydrodynamic codes ignore the effects of viscosity though recent research indicates viscosity and mixing by classical transport processes may have a substantial impact on implosion dynamics. We have implemented a Lagrange hydrodynamic code in one-dimensional spherical geometry with plasma viscosity and mass transport and including a three temperature model for ions, electrons, and radiation treated in a gray radiation diffusion approximation. The code is used to study ICF implosion differences with and without plasma viscosity and to determine the impacts of viscosity on temperature histories and neutron yield. It was found that plasma viscosity has substantial impacts on ICF shock dynamics characterized by shock burn timing, maximum burn temperatures, convergence ratio, and time history of neutron production rates. Plasma viscosity reduces the need for artificial viscosity to maintain numerical stability in the Lagrange formulation and also modifies the flux-limiting needed for electron thermal conduction.

375. Aggregations over Generalized Hypertree Decompositions

Abstract

We study a class of aggregate-join queries with multiple aggregation operators evaluated over annotated relations. We show that straightforward extensions of standard multiway join algorithms and generalized hypertree decompositions (GHDs) provide best-known runtime guarantees. In contrast, prior work uses bespoke algorithms and data structures and does not match these guarantees. Our extensions to the standard techniques are a pair of simple tests that (1) determine if two orderings of aggregation operators are equivalent and (2) determine if a GHD is compatible with a given ordering. These tests provide a means to find an optimal GHD that, when provided to standard join algorithms, will correctly answer a given aggregate-join query. The second class of our contributions is a pair of complete characterizations of (1) the set of orderings equivalent to a given ordering and (2) the set of GHDs compatible with some equivalent ordering. We show by example that previous approaches are incomplete. The key technical consequence of our characterizations is a decomposition of a compatible GHD into a set of (smaller) {\em unconstrained} GHDs, i.e. into a set of GHDs of sub-queries without aggregations. Since this decomposition is comprised of unconstrained GHDs, we are able to connect to the wide literature on GHDs for join query processing, thereby obtaining improved runtime bounds, MapReduce variants, and an efficient method to find approximately optimal GHDs.

376. Nernst Effect in Magnetized Plasmas

Abstract

We present nanosecond timescale Vlasov-Fokker-Planck-Maxwell modeling of magnetized plasma transport and dynamics in a hohlraum with an applied external magnetic field, under conditions similar to recent experiments. Self-consistent modeling of the kinetic electron momentum equation allows for a complete treatment of the heat flow equation and Ohm's Law, including Nernst advection of magnetic fields. In addition to showing the prevalence of non-local behavior, we demonstrate that effects such as anomalous heat flow are induced by inverse bremsstrahlung heating. We show magnetic field amplification up to a factor of 3 from Nernst compression into the hohlraum wall. The magnetic field is also expelled towards the hohlraum axis due to Nernst advection faster than frozen-in-flux would suggest. Non-locality contributes to the heat flow towards the hohlraum axis and results in an augmented Nernst advection mechanism that is included self-consistently through kinetic modeling.

We study a non-Hermitian version of the Rabi model, where a two-level system is periodically driven with an imaginary-valued drive strength, leading to alternating gain and loss. In the Floquet picture, the model exhibits PT symmetry, which can be broken when the drive is sufficiently strong. We derive the boundaries of the PT phase diagram for the different resonances by doing perturbation theory beyond the rotating-wave approximation. For the main resonance, we show that the non-Hermitian analog of the Bloch-Siegert shift corresponds to maximal PT-breaking. For the higher-order resonances, we capture the boundaries to lowest order. We also solve the regime of high frequency by mapping to the Wannier-Stark ladder. Abstract

We introduce and study the notion of read-$k$ projections of the determinant: a polynomial $f \in \mathbb{F}[x_1, \ldots, x_n]$ is called a {\it read-$k$ projection of determinant} if $f=det(M)$, where entries of matrix $M$ are either field elements or variables such that each variable appears at most $k$ times in $M$. A monomial set $S$ is said to be expressible as read-$k$ projection of determinant if there is a read-$k$ projection of determinant $f$ such that the monomial set of $f$ is equal to $S$. We obtain basic results relating read-$k$ determinantal projections to the well-studied notion of determinantal complexity. We show that for sufficiently large $n$, the $n \times n$ permanent polynomial $Perm_n$ and the elementary symmetric polynomials of degree $d$ on $n$ variables $S_n^d$ for $2 \leq d \leq n-2$ are not expressible as read-once projection of determinant, whereas $mon(Perm_n)$ and $mon(S_n^d)$ are expressible as read-once projections of determinant. We also give examples of monomial sets which are not expressible as read-once projections of determinant.

379. It's all a matter of degree: Using degree information to optimize multiway joins

Abstract

We optimize multiway equijoins on relational tables using degree information. We give a new bound that uses degree information to more tightly bound the maximum output size of a query. On real data, our bound on the number of triangles in a social network can be up to $95$ times tighter than existing worst case bounds. We show that using only a constant amount of degree information, we are able to obtain join algorithms with a running time that has a smaller exponent than existing algorithms--{\em for any database instance}. We also show that this degree information can be obtained in nearly linear time, which yields asymptotically faster algorithms in the serial setting and lower communication algorithms in the MapReduce setting. In the serial setting, the data complexity of join processing can be expressed as a function $O(\IN^x + \OUT)$ in terms of input size $\IN$ and output size $\OUT$ in which $x$ depends on the query. An upper bound for $x$ is given by fractional hypertreewidth. We are interested in situations in which we can get algorithms for which $x$ is strictly smaller than the fractional hypertreewidth. We say that a join can be processed in subquadratic time if $x < 2$. Building on the AYZ algorithm for processing cycle joins in quadratic time, for a restricted class of joins which we call $1$-series-parallel graphs, we obtain a complete decision procedure for identifying subquadratic solvability (subject to the $3$-SUM problem requiring quadratic time). Our $3$-SUM based quadratic lower bound is tight, making it the only known tight bound for joins that does not require any assumption about the matrix multiplication exponent $\omega$. We also give a MapReduce algorithm that meets our improved communication bound and handles essentially optimal parallelism.

In this paper we explore the noncommutative analogues, $\mathrm{VP}_{nc}$ and $\mathrm{VNP}_{nc}$, of Valiant's algebraic complexity classes and show some striking connections to classical formal language theory. Our main results are the following: (1) We show that Dyck polynomials (defined from the Dyck languages of formal language theory) are complete for the class $\mathrm{VP}_{nc}$ under $\le_{abp}$ reductions. Likewise, it turns out that $\mathrm{PAL}$ (Palindrome polynomials defined from palindromes) are complete for the class $\mathrm{VSKEW}_{nc}$ (defined by polynomial-size skew circuits) under $\le_{abp}$ reductions. The proof of these results is by suitably adapting the classical Chomsky-Sch\"{u}tzenberger theorem showing that Dyck languages are the hardest CFLs. (2) Next, we consider the class $\mathrm{VNP}_{nc}$. It is known~\cite{HWY10a} that, assuming the sum-of-squares conjecture, the noncommutative polynomial $\sum_{w\in\{x_0,x_1\}^n}ww$ requires exponential size circuits. We unconditionally show that $\sum_{w\in\{x_0,x_1\}^n}ww$ is not $\mathrm{VNP}_{nc}$-complete under the projection reducibility. As a consequence, assuming the sum-of-squares conjecture, we exhibit a strictly infinite hierarchy of p-families under projections inside $\mathrm{VNP}_{nc}$ (analogous to Ladner's theorem~\cite{Ladner75}). In the final section we discuss some new $\mathrm{VNP}_{nc}$-complete problems under $\le_{abp}$-reductions. (3) Inside $\mathrm{VP}_{nc}$ too we show there is a strict hierarchy of p-families (based on the nesting depth of Dyck polynomials) under the $\le_{abp}$ reducibility.

Abstract

In the interaction of high-power laser beams with solid density plasma there are a number of mechanisms that generate strong magnetic fields. Such fields subsequently inhibit or redirect electron flows, but can themselves be advected by heat fluxes, resulting in complex interplay between thermal transport and magnetic fields.We show that for heating by multiple laser spots reconnection of magnetic field lines can occur, mediated by these heat fluxes, using a fully implicit 2D Vlasov-Fokker-Planck code. Under such conditions, the reconnection rate is dictated by heat flows rather than Alfv\`enic flows. We find that this mechanism is only relevant in a high $\beta$ plasma. However, the Hall parameter $\omega_c \tau_{ei}$ can be large so that thermal transport is strongly modified by these magnetic fields, which can impact longer time scale temperature homogeneity and ion dynamics in the system.

Abstract

Aubry-Andre Harper (AAH) lattice models, characterized by reflection-asymmetric, sinusoidally varying nearest-neighbor tunneling profile, are well-known for their topological properties. We consider the fate of such models in the presence of balanced gain and loss potentials $\pm i\gamma$ located at reflection-symmetric sites. We predict that these models have a finite $\mathcal{PT}$ breaking threshold only for {\it specific locations} of the gain-loss potential, and uncover a hidden symmetry that is instrumental to the finite threshold strength. We also show that the topological edge-states remain robust in the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry broken phase. Abstract

In this paper we study the complexity of factorization of polynomials in the free noncommutative ring $\mathbb{F}\langle x_1,x_2,\dots,x_n\rangle$ of polynomials over the field $\mathbb{F}$ and noncommuting variables $x_1,x_2,\ldots,x_n$. Our main results are the following. Although $\mathbb{F}\langle x_1,x_2,\dots,x_n \rangle$ is not a unique factorization ring, we note that variable-disjoint factorization in $\mathbb{F}\langle x_1,x_2,\dots,x_n \rangle$ has the uniqueness property. Furthermore, we prove that computing the variable-disjoint factorization is polynomial-time equivalent to Polynomial Identity Testing (both when the input polynomial is given by an arithmetic circuit or an algebraic branching program). We also show that variable-disjoint factorization in the black-box setting can be efficiently computed (where the factors computed will be also given by black-boxes, analogous to the work [KT91] in the commutative setting). As a consequence of the previous result we show that homogeneous noncommutative polynomials and multilinear noncommutative polynomials have unique factorizations in the usual sense, which can be efficiently computed. Finally, we discuss a polynomial decomposition problem in $\mathbb{F}\langle x_1,x_2,\dots,x_n\rangle$ which is a natural generalization of homogeneous polynomial factorization and prove some complexity bounds for it.

Abstract

Abstract The deep underground neutrino experiment (DUNE), a 40-kton underground liquid argon time projection chamber experiment, will be sensitive to the electron-neutrino flavor component of the burst of neutrinos expected from the next Galactic core-collapse supernova. Such an observation will bring unique insight into the astrophysics of core collapse as well as into the properties of neutrinos. The general capabilities of DUNE for neutrino detection in the relevant few- to few-tens-of-MeV neutrino energy range will be described. As an example, DUNE’s ability to constrain the $$\nu _e$$ ν e spectral parameters of the neutrino burst will be considered.

Abstract

Abstract The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) will be a powerful tool for a variety of physics topics. The high-intensity proton beams provide a large neutrino flux, sampled by a near detector system consisting of a combination of capable precision detectors, and by the massive far detector system located deep underground. This configuration sets up DUNE as a machine for discovery, as it enables opportunities not only to perform precision neutrino measurements that may uncover deviations from the present three-flavor mixing paradigm, but also to discover new particles and unveil new interactions and symmetries beyond those predicted in the Standard Model (SM). Of the many potential beyond the Standard Model (BSM) topics DUNE will probe, this paper presents a selection of studies quantifying DUNE’s sensitivities to sterile neutrino mixing, heavy neutral leptons, non-standard interactions, CPT symmetry violation, Lorentz invariance violation, neutrino trident production, dark matter from both beam induced and cosmogenic sources, baryon number violation, and other new physics topics that complement those at high-energy colliders and significantly extend the present reach.

386. Urinary microRNAs as non-invasive biomarkers for toxic acute kidney injury in humans

Abstract

Abstract MicroRNAs in biofluids are potential biomarkers for detecting kidney and other organ injuries. We profiled microRNAs in urine samples from patients with Russell’s viper envenoming or acute self-poisoning following paraquat, glyphosate, or oxalic acid [with and without acute kidney injury (AKI)] and on healthy controls. Discovery analysis profiled for 754 microRNAs using TaqMan OpenArray qPCR with three patients per group (12 samples in each toxic agent). From these, 53 microRNAs were selected and validated in a larger cohort of patients (Russell’s viper envenoming = 53, paraquat = 51, glyphosate = 51, oxalic acid = 40) and 27 healthy controls. Urinary microRNAs had significantly higher expression in patients poisoned/envenomed by different nephrotoxic agents in both discovery and validation cohorts. Seven microRNAs discriminated severe AKI patients from no AKI for all four nephrotoxic agents. Four microRNAs (miR-30a-3p, miR-30a-5p, miR-92a, and miR-204) had > 17 fold change (p 0.72. Pathway analysis of target mRNAs of these differentially expressed microRNAs showed association with the regulation of different nephrotoxic signaling pathways. In conclusion, human urinary microRNAs could identify toxic AKI early after acute injury. These urinary microRNAs have potential clinical application as early non-invasive diagnostic AKI biomarkers.

Abstract

Abstract Objective Prevention of recurrent stroke in patients with embolic stroke of undetermined source (ESUS) is challenging. The advent of safer anticoagulation in the form of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) has prompted exploration of prophylactic anticoagulation for all ESUS patients, rather than anticoagulating just those with documented atrial fibrillation (AF). However, recent trials have failed to demonstrate a clinical benefit, while observing increased bleeding. We modeled the economic impact of anticoagulating ESUS patients without documented AF across multiple geographies. Methods CRYSTAL-AF trial data were used to assess ischaemic stroke event rates in ESUS patients confirmed AF-free after long-term monitoring. Anticipated bleeding event rates (including both minor and major bleeds) with aspirin, dabigatran 150 mg, and rivaroxaban 20 mg were sourced from published meta-analyses, whilst a 30% ischaemic stroke reduction for both DOACs was assumed. Cost data for clinical events and pharmaceuticals were collected from the local payer perspective. Results Compared with aspirin, dabigatran and rivaroxaban resulted in 17.9 and 29.9 additional bleeding events per 100 patients over a patient’s lifetime, respectively. Despite incorporating into our model the proposed 30% reduction in ischaemic stroke risk, both DOACs were cost-additive over patient lifetime, as the costs of bleeding events and pharmaceuticals outweighed cost savings associated with the reduction in ischaemic strokes. DOACs added £5953–£7018 per patient (UK), €6683–€7368 (Netherlands), €4933–€9378 (Spain), AUD$5353–6539 (Australia) and $26,768–$32,259 (US) of payer cost depending on the agent prescribed. Additionally, in the U.S. patient pharmacy co-payments ranged from $2468–$12,844 depending on agent and patient plan. In all settings, cost-savings could not be demonstrated even when the modelling assumed 100% protection from recurrent ischaemic strokes, due to the very low underlying risk of recurrent ischaemic stroke in this population (1.27 per 100 patient-years). Conclusions Anticoagulation of non-AF patients may cause excess bleeds and add substantial costs for uncertain benefits, suggesting a personalised approach to anticoagulation in ESUS patients.

Abstract

We present {\em smart drill-down}, an operator for interactively exploring a relational table to discover and summarize "interesting" groups of tuples. Each group of tuples is described by a {\em rule}. For instance, the rule $(a, b, \star, 1000)$ tells us that there are a thousand tuples with value $a$ in the first column and $b$ in the second column (and any value in the third column). Smart drill-down presents an analyst with a list of rules that together describe interesting aspects of the table. The analyst can tailor the definition of interesting, and can interactively apply smart drill-down on an existing rule to explore that part of the table. We demonstrate that the underlying optimization problems are {\sc NP-Hard}, and describe an algorithm for finding the approximately optimal list of rules to display when the user uses a smart drill-down, and a dynamic sampling scheme for efficiently interacting with large tables. Finally, we perform experiments on real datasets on our experimental prototype to demonstrate the usefulness of smart drill-down and study the performance of our algorithms.

Abstract

We propose conditioning field initialization for neural network-based topology optimization. In this work, we focus on (1) improving upon existing neural network-based topology optimization and (2) demonstrating that using a prior initial field on the unoptimized domain, the efficiency of neural network-based topology optimization can be further improved. Our approach consists of a topology neural network that is trained on a case by case basis to represent the geometry for a single topology optimization problem. It takes in domain coordinates as input to represent the density at each coordinate where the topology is represented by a continuous density field. The displacement is solved through a finite element solver. We employ the strain energy field calculated on the initial design domain as an additional conditioning field input to the neural network throughout the optimization. Running the same number of iterations, our method converges to a lower compliance. To reach the same compliance, our method takes fewer iterations. The addition of the strain energy field input improves the convergence speed compared to standalone neural network-based topology optimization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Tourism is an important economic sector and an enabler for a country's growth. The Dudhsagar waterfall located within the Mollem National Park, Goa, India is one of the most visited tourist destinations in Goa, India, with 35,000–50,000 domestic and international tourists visiting the waterfall annually. This study attempts to quantify the resource availability to support sustainable tourism of Dudhsagar waterfall for recreational use with consideration for its specific physical/natural, economic, and cultural settings. The study employs various principles, which include Boullon formula, Congestion/overcrowding principle, and ratio of local population to hosts to carry out the carrying capacity analysis. Further, this study presents a modified approach to carrying capacity analysis, where air quality, noise level, and the water quality is also considered to prescribe the optimal number of visitors the area can accommodate while maintaining visitors satisfaction and preventing negative impacts on the natural resources. Additionally, the impact indicators assessment was performed using the view and opinion of the stakeholders. The data used in this study are an outcome of a broad survey conducted among the people associated in both direct and indirect with the tourism sector at Dudhsagar fall. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
