Introduction: Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are pivotal in plant resource acquisition, mediating plant interactions, and influencing soil carbon dynamics. However, their biogeographical distribution in Tibetan alpine grasslands remains understudied., Methods: In this research, we examined the distribution pattern of AMF communities and their key determinants along a 2000-km transect across the Tibetan plateau, encompassing 7 alpine meadows and 8 alpine steppes., Results: Our findings indicate that AMF community diversity and composition exhibit similarities between alpine meadows and alpine steppes, primarily influenced by latitude and evapotranspiration. At the genus level, Glomus predominated in both alpine meadow (36.49%±2.67%) and alpine steppe (41.87%±2.36%) soils, followed by Paraglomus (27.14%±3.69%, 32.34%±3.28%). Furthermore, a significant decay relationship of AMF community was observed over geographical distance. Phyllosphere endophytes play a critical role in a myriad of biological functions, such as maintaining plant health and overall fitness. They play a determinative role in crop yield and quality by regulating vital processes, such as leaf functionality and longevity, seed mass, apical growth, flowering, and fruit development. This study conducted a comprehensive bibliometric analysis aiming to review the prevailing research trajectories in phyllosphere endophytes and harness both primary areas of interest and emerging challenges. A total of 156 research articles on phyllosphere endophytes, published between 2002 and 2022, were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC). A systematic analysis was conducted using CiteSpace to visualize the evolution of publication frequency, the collaboration network, the co-citation network, and keywords co-occurrence. The findings indicated that initially, there were few publications on the topic of phyllosphere endophytes. However, from 2011 onwards, there was a notable increase in the number of publications on phyllosphere endophytes, gaining worldwide attention. Among authors, Arnold, A Elizabeth is widely recognized as a leading author in this research area. In terms of countries, the USA and China hold the highest rankings. As for institutional ranking, the University of Arizona is the most prevalent and leading institute in this particular subject. Collaborative efforts among the authors and institutions tend to be confined to small groups, and a large-scale collaborative network needs to be established. This study identified the influential journals, literature, and hot research topics. These findings also highlight the interconnected nature of key themes, e.g., phyllosphere endophyte research revolves around the four pillars: diversity, fungal endophytes, growth, and endophytic fungi. This study provides an in-depth perspective on phyllosphere endophytes studies, revealing the identification of biodiversity and microbial interaction of phyllosphere endophytes as the principal research frontiers. A series of novel and modular ferrorence-based amino-phosphine-binol (f-amphbinol) ligands have been successfully synthesized. The f-amphbinol ligands exhibited extremely high air stability and catalytic efficiency in the Ir-catalyzed stereoselective hydrogenation of various ketones to afford corresponding stereodefined alcohols with excellent results (full conversions, cis/trans >99:1, and 83% → 99% ee, TON up to 500 000). Control experiments have shown that -OH and -NH groups played a key role in this stereoselective hydrogenation.

A great number of fencing facilities has been established in Three-River-Source National Park. However, with the transformation of wild animals into the main consumers of grassland ecosystem and the increasing years of fence (>15 years), whether the fence still has a positive effect on grassland ecosystem has become controversial. Therefore, taking the alpine steppe and alpine meadow in Three-River-Source National Park as the case study, this study focused on the effects of long-term enclosure on different ecological components by investigating plant communities, soil physical and chemical characteristics and soil microbial characteristics (16S, ITS). Furthermore, we evaluated the ecological benefits of long-term fencing based on the stability of plant communities and microbial networks. We found that fencing did not significantly promote the stability of plant community in different grassland types. The analysis of bacteria-fungal symbiotic network indicated that fencing significantly reduced the stability of soil microbial network in alpine meadows. The results of structural equation showed that the microbial community was indirectly affected by the changes of soil moisture content (SMC) and soil total nutrient content in the alpine steppe, and the stability of microbial network was significantly correlated with the diversity of fungal community. In alpine meadows, fencing indirectly affected soil microbial community by changing SMC and pH. High SMC was not conducive to microbial network stability, while high plant community stability was beneficial to microbial network stability. Network stability was remarkably related to bacterial community composition and diversity, as well as fungal community diversity. Grazing exclusion changes soil physical-chemical characteristics, rapidly affects microbial community composition and function, and alters biogeochemical processes, e.g., carbon (C) cycle, over time. However, the temporal dynamics of CO 2 emission and CH 4 uptake during grassland restoration chronosequences remain poorly understood. We investigated soil CO 2 emission and CH 4 uptake, the genes related to CO 2 and CH 4 production and reduction (cbbL, cbbM, chiA, and pmoA), and associated microbial communities under different durations of grazing exclusion (0, 7, 16, 25, and 38 years) to reveal the mechanisms and potential of soil CO 2 emission and CH 4 uptake in a semi-arid steppe. The results showed that a proper exclusion period could significantly improve soil physical-chemical conditions, vegetation community, and soil C-cycling. The abundance of C-cycling functional genes (cbbL, cbbM, chiA and pmoA), CH 4 uptake and CO 2 emission rates showed a single-peak pattern with increasing duration of grazing exclusion, peaking at 16 years and then decreasing in the period between 25 and 38 years, indicating that the effect of exclusion weakened when the exclusion period was too long. The changes in C-cycling functional genes and microbial communities are primarily influenced by aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP), and are associated with CO 2 , CH 4 , soil water content (SWC), and soil organic carbon (SOC). Structural equation modeling showed that increases in SOC content and pmoA abundance caused by an increase in ANPP accelerated CO 2 emission and CH 4 uptake rates, respectively. Structural information of grassland changes on the Tibetan Plateau is essential for understanding alterations in critical ecosystem functioning and their underlying drivers that may reflect environmental changes. However, such information at the regional scale is still lacking due to methodological limitations. Beyond remote sensing indicators only recognizing vegetation productivity, we utilized multivariate data fusion and deep learning to characterize formation-based plant community structure in alpine grasslands at the regional scale of the Tibetan Plateau for the first time and compared it with the earlier version of Vegetation Map of China for historical changes. Over the past 40 years, we revealed that (1) the proportion of alpine meadows in alpine grasslands increased from 50% to 69%, well-reflecting the warming and wetting trend; (2) dominances of Kobresia pygmaea and Stipa purpurea formations in alpine meadows and steppes were strengthened to 76% and 92%, respectively; (3) the climate factor mainly drove the distribution of Stipa purpurea formation, but not the recent distribution of Kobresia pygmaea formation that was likely shaped by human activities. Therefore, the underlying mechanisms of grassland changes over the past 40 years were considered to be formation dependent. A simple, efficient method has been developed for the Co III -H-catalyzed aerobic C-C bond cleavage of tertiary allylic alcohols to access ketones. This novel approach presents excellent chemoselectivity, good functional group compatibility, and high yields. This reaction occurs through a HAT-initiated peroxide intermediate, and an adjacent glycol-type diradical fragmentation process is recommended.

In the Tibetan grasslands, the distribution patterns of the microbial community structure and function along elevation gradients have attracted considerable attention due to the wide distribution of mountain slopes, but the controlling factors of these patterns are still unclear. Here we investigated the taxonomy and potential functions of soil bacteria along an elevation gradient in a Tibetan mountainous grassland in 2 years, aiming to explore the elevation patterns of the bacterial structure and function and the underlying drivers. High-throughput sequencing and environment attribute measurements were conducted to survey the bacterial and environment characters. Furthermore, PICRUSt2 for prediction of bacterial functions, iCAMP for unraveling the drivers controlling community assembly, and HMSC for variance partitioning of bacterial community composition were used. Elevation did not significantly affect the bacterial diversity but changed their composition, driven by both deterministic and stochastic processes. In addition, elevation did not significantly affect the relative importance of deterministic and stochastic processes. Soil carbon, nitrogen, and temperature were important deterministic factors in driving bacterial community structure. The genus Solirubrobacter in Actinobacteriota was identified as most elevation discriminatory. The riparian zone is an important ecological corridor connecting the upstream and downstream rivers. Its highly complex biological and physical environments significantly affect the biogeographical pattern of species and various ecosystem functions. However, in alpine riparian ecosystems, the distribution patterns and drivers of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi, a group of functionally important root-associated microorganisms, remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the AM fungal diversity and community composition in near-bank (wetland) and far-bank (alpine meadows) soils along the Niaqu River in the Nam Co watershed, and assessed the relative importance of abiotic and biotic filtering in shaping these distributions. Overall, 184 OTUs were identified in the riparian ecosystem, predominantly belonging to the genus Glomus , especially in the downstream soils, and Claroideoglomus in near-bank soils. AM fungal colonization, spore density, and α diversity showed an overall increasing trend along the river, while the extraradical hyphae declined dramatically from the middle of the river. AM fungal communities significantly varied between the wetland and alpine meadows in the riparian zone, mainly driven by the geographic distance, soil water content, soil pH, and plant communities. Specifically, soil pH was the principal predictor of AM fungal community in near-bank wetland soils, while soil water content had a most substantial direct effect in alpine meadows. Resources can affect plant productivity and biodiversity simultaneously and thus are key drivers of their relationships in addition to plant-plant interactions. However, most previous studies only focused on a single resource while neglecting the nature of resource multidimensionality. Here we integrated four essential resources for plant growth into a single metric of resource diversity (RD) to investigate its effects on the productivity-biodiversity relationship (PBR) across Chinese grasslands. Results showed that habitats differing in RD have different PBRs-positive in low-resource habitats, but neutral in medium- and high-resource ones-while collectively, a weak positive PBR was observed. However, when excluding direct effects of RD on productivity and biodiversity, the PBR in high-resource habitats became negative, which leads to a unimodal instead of a positive PBR along the RD gradient. By integrating resource effects and changing plant-plant interactions into a unified framework with the RD gradient, our work contributes to uncovering underlying mechanisms for inconsistent PBRs at large scales., (© The Author(s) 2022. Rhizosphere soil microbial communities substantially impact plant growth by regulating the nutrient cycle. However, dynamic changes in soil microbiota under different tree ages have received little attention. In this study, changes in soil physicochemical properties, as well as bacterial diversity and community structures (by high-throughput Illumina MiSeq sequencing), were explored in pomelo trees of different ages (i.e., 10, 20, and 30 years) under red and paddy soils cultivated by farmers with high fertilizer input. Moreover, soil factors that shape the bacterial community, such as soil pH, AP (available phosphorous), AK (available potassium), and AN (available nitrogen), were also investigated. Results showed that pH significantly decreased, while AP, AK, and AN increased with increasing tree age under red soil. For paddy soil, pH was not changed, while AP was significantly lower under 10-year-old pomelo trees, and AK and AN contents were minimum under 30-year-old pomelo trees. Both soil types were dominated by Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria , and Actinobacteria and showed contrasting patterns of relative abundance under different tree age groups. Bacterial richness and diversity decreased with increasing tree age in both soil types. Overall, bacterial community composition was different under different tree ages. RDA analysis showed that soil pH, AP, and AN in red soil, and pH and AP in paddy soil showed the most significant effects in changing the bacterial community structure. A random forest model showed Sinomonas and Streptacidiphilus in red soil, while Actinoallomurus and Microbacterium in paddy soil were the most important genera explaining the differences among different age groups. The ternary plot further revealed that genera enrichment for Age_30 was higher than that for Age_10 and Age_20 in red soil, whereas specific genera enrichment decreased with increasing tree age under paddy soil. Co-occurrence network revealed that bacterial species formed a complex network structure with increasing tree age, indicating a more stable microbial association under 20 and 30 years than 10-year-old pomelo trees. Hence, contrasting patterns of changes in soil physicochemical properties and soil microbial communities were recorded under different tree ages, and tree ages significantly affected the bacterial community structure and richness. Effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on plants span the continuum from mutualism to parasitism due to the plant-AMF specificity, which obscures the utilization of AMF in the restoration of degraded lands. Caragana korshinskii , Hedysarum laeve , Caragana microphylla , and Poa annua are the most frequently used plants for revegetation in Kubuqi Desert, China, and the influence of AMF on their re-establishment remains to be explored further. Herein, using a greenhouse experiment, we tested the plant-AMF feedbacks between the four plant species and their conspecific or heterospecific AMF, retrieved from their rhizosphere in the Kubuqi Desert. AMF showed beneficial effects on plant growth for all these plant-AMF pairs. Generally, AMF increased the biomass of C. korshinskii , H. laeve , C. microphylla , and P. annua by 97.6, 50.6, 46.5, and 381.1%, respectively, relative to control. In addition, the AMF-plant specificity was detected. P. annua grew best, but C. microphylla grew worst with conspecific AMF communities. AMF community from P. annua showed the largest beneficial effect on all the plants (with biomass increased by 63.9-734.4%), while the AMF community from C. microphylla showed the least beneficial effect on all the plants (with biomass increased by 9.9-59.1%), except for P. annua (a 292.4% increase in biomass). The magnitude of AMF effects on plant growth was negatively correlated with the complexity of the corresponding AMF co-occurrence networks. Overall, this study suggests that AMF effects on plant growth vary due to plant-AMF specificity. Background: Soil microbes exist throughout the soil profile and those inhabiting topsoil (0-20 cm) are believed to play a key role in nutrients cycling. However, the majority of the soil microbiology studies have exclusively focused on the distribution of soil microbial communities in the topsoil, and it remains poorly understood through the subsurface soil profile (i.e., 20-40 and 40-60 cm). Here, we examined how the bacterial community composition and functional diversity changes under intensive fertilization across vertical soil profiles [(0-20 cm (RS1), 20-40 cm (RS2), and 40-60 cm (RS3)] in the red soil of pomelo orchard, Pinghe County, Fujian, China., Results: Bacterial community composition was determined by 16S rRNA gene sequencing and interlinked with edaphic factors, including soil pH, available phosphorous (AP), available nitrogen (AN), and available potassium (AK) to investigate the key edaphic factors that shape the soil bacterial community along with different soil profiles. The most dominant bacterial taxa were Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Actinobacteria, Chloroflexi, Crenarchaeota, and Bacteriodetes. Bacterial richness and diversity was highest in RS1 and declined with increasing soil depth. The distinct distribution patterns of the bacterial community were found across the different soil profiles. Besides, soil pH exhibited a strong influence (pH ˃AP ˃AN) on the bacterial communities under all soil depths. The relative abundance of Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Crenarchaeota, and Firmicutes was negatively correlated with soil pH, while Acidobacteria, Chloroflexi, Bacteriodetes, Planctomycetes, and Gemmatimonadetes were positively correlated with soil pH. Co-occurrence network analysis revealed that network topological features were weakened with increasing soil depth, indicating a more stable bacterial community in the RS1. Bacterial functions were estimated using FAPROTAX and the relative abundance of functional bacterial community related to metabolic processes, including C-cycle, N-cycle, and energy production was significantly higher in RS1 compared to RS2 and RS3, and soil pH had a significant effect on these functional microbes., Conclusions: This study provided the valuable findings regarding the structure and functions of bacterial communities in red soil of pomelo orchards, and highlighted the importance of soil depth and pH in shaping the soil bacterial population, their spatial distribution and ecological functioning. Plants and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) can form complex symbiotic networks based on functional trait selection, contributing to the maintenance of ecosystem biodiversity and stability. However, the selectivity of host plants on AMF and the characteristics of plant-AMF networks remain unclear in Tibetan alpine meadows. In this study, we studied the AMF communities in 69 root samples from 23 plant species in a Tibetan alpine meadow using Illumina-MiSeq sequencing of the 18S rRNA gene. The results showed a significant positive correlation between the phylogenetic distances of plant species and the taxonomic dissimilarity of their AMF community. The plant-AMF network was characterized by high connectance, high nestedness, anti-modularity, and anti-specialization, and the phylogenetic signal from plants was stronger than that from AMF. The high connected and nested plant-AMF network potentially promoted the interdependence and stability of the plant-AMF symbioses in Tibetan alpine meadows. A brief, efficient method has been developed for the removal of the allyl protecting group from allyl carboxylic esters using a Co(II)/TBHP/(Me 2 SiH) 2 O catalytic system. This facile strategy displays excellent chemoselectivity, functional group tolerance, and high yields. This transformation probably occurs through the hydrogen atom transfer process, and a Co(III)-six-membered cyclic intermediate is recommended.

Grazing exclusion is an effective management practice to restore grassland ecosystem functioning. However, little is known about the role of soil microbial communities in regulating grassland ecosystem functioning during long-term ecosystem restorations. We evaluated the recovery of a degraded semiarid grassland ecosystem in northern China by investigating plant and soil characteristics and the role of soil microbial communities in ecosystem functioning after 22 years of grazing exclusion. Grazing exclusion significantly increased the alpha diversity and changed the community structure of bacteria, but did not significantly affect the alpha diversity or community structure of fungi. The higher abundance of copiotrophic Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes with grazing exclusion was due to the higher carbon and nutrient concentrations in the soil, whereas the high abundance of Acidobacteria in overgrazed soils was likely an adaptation to the poor environmental conditions. Bacteria of the Sphingomonadaceae family were associated with C cycling under grazing exclusion. Bacteria of the Nitrospiraceae family, and especially of the Nitrospira genus, played an important role in changes to the N cycle under long-term exclusion of grazing. Quantitative PCR further revealed that grazing exclusion significantly increased the abundance of nitrogen fixing bacteria ( nifH ), ammonia oxidizers (AOA and AOB), and denitrifying bacteria ( nirK and nosZ 1). Denitrifying enzyme activity (DEA) was positively correlated with abundance of denitrifying bacteria. The increase in DEA under grazing exclusion suggests that the dependence of DEA on the availability of NO 3 - produced is due to the combined activity of ammonia oxidizers and denitrifiers. Nutrient resorption from senesced leaves is an important mechanism for nutrient conservation in plants. However, little is known about the effect of grazing on plant nutrient resorption from senesced leaves, especially in semiarid ecosystems. Here, we evaluated the effects of grazing on N and P resorption in the three most dominant grass species in a typical steppe in northern China. We identified the key pathways of grazing-induced effects on N and P resorption efficiency. Grazing increased N and P concentrations in the green leaves of Leymus chinensis and Stipa grandis but not in Cleistogenes squarossa . Both L. chinensis and S. grandis exhibited an increasing trend of leaf N resorption, whereas C. squarrosa recorded a decline in both leaf N and P resorption efficiency under grazing. Structural equation models showed that grazing is the primary driver of the changes in N resorption efficiency of the three dominant grass species. For L. chinensis , the P concentration in green and senesced leaves increased the P resorption efficiency, whereas the senesced leaf P concentration played an important role in the P resorption efficiency of C. squarrosa . Grazing directly drove the change in P resorption efficiency of S. grandis . Common mycorrhizal networks (CMNs) allow the transfer of nutrients between plants, influencing the growth of the neighboring plants and soil properties. Cleistogene squarrosa (C. squarrosa) is one of the most common grass species in the steppe ecosystem of Inner Mongolia, where nitrogen (N) is often a key limiting nutrient for plant growth, but little is known about whether CMNs exist between neighboring individuals of C. squarrosa or play any roles in the N acquisition of the C. squarrosa population. In this study, two C. squarrosa individuals, one as a donor plant and the other as a recipient plant, were planted in separate compartments in a partitioned root-box. Adjacent compartments were separated by 37 µm nylon mesh, in which mycorrhizal hyphae can go through but not roots. The donor plant was inoculated with arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi, and their hyphae potentially passed through nylon mesh to colonize the roots of the recipient plant, resulting in the establishment of CMNs. The formation of CMNs was verified by microscopic examination and 15 N tracer techniques. Moreover, different levels of N fertilization (N0 = 0, N1 = 7.06, N2 = 14.15, N3 = 21.19 mg/kg) were applied to evaluate the CMNs' functioning under different soil nutrient conditions. Our results showed that when C. squarrosa-C. squarrosa was the association, the extraradical mycelium transferred the 15 N in the range of 45-55% at different N levels. Moreover, AM fungal colonization of the recipient plant by the extraradical hyphae from the donor plant significantly increased the plant biomass and the chlorophyll content in the recipient plant. The extraradical hyphae released the highest content of glomalin-related soil protein into the rhizosphere upon N2 treatment, and a significant positive correlation was found between hyphal length and glomalin-related soil proteins (GRSPs). GRSPs and soil organic carbon (SOC) were significantly correlated with mean weight diameter (MWD) and helped in the aggregation of soil particles, resulting in improved soil structure. Luminescent Cu(I) complexes are promising emitting materials for electroluminescent devices due to their low cost and abundant resources, as well as high emission efficiency. It is well-known that N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) are excellent ligands for transition metal complexes. To investigate the photophysical properties of Cu(I)-NHC complexes, a series of new mononuclear four-coordinate Cu(I) complexes supported by the diphosphine ligand bis[2-(diphenylphosphino)phenyl]ether (POP) and the NHC ligands, consisting of imidazolylidene and pyrimidine units, were synthesized and fully characterized. To tune the photophysical properties of these Cu(I)-NHC complexes, the NHC ligands were attached with electron-withdrawing/donating groups (fluorine, chlorine, methyl and methoxyl) at the pyrimidine unit. All of these Cu(I)-NHC complexes adopt the typical distorted tetrahedral configuration. The electron-donating groups can lead to shorter Cu-N bond distances and longer Cu-C bond distances compared to the electron-withdrawing groups. Theoretical calculation results show that the highest occupied molecular orbitals are mainly distributed on the Cu(I) ion, POP, and carbene unit, while the lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals are mostly located on the pyrimidine unit of NHC ligands. The lowest energy electronic transitions of these Cu(I)-NHC complexes are mainly the metal-to-ligand charge transfer transition and ligand-to-ligand charge transfer transition. These Cu(I)-NHC complexes in solid state show tunable emissions from 530 to 618 nm with efficiencies of 0.5-38.1% at room temperature. The photophysical behaviors of these complexes at 298 and 50 K match well with the thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) characteristics.

An efficient and general visible-light-mediated trifluoromethylthiolation of N-(o-cyanobiaryl)acrylamides has been successfully accomplished using N-trifluoromethylthiosaccharin as an effective source of SCF3 radicals. The reaction was proposed to proceed via a domino radical trifluoromethylthiolation/cyano insertion/cyclization to afford the corresponding SCF3-containing ring-fused phenanthridine derivatives in moderate to good yields.

The visible-light-mediated oxydifluoromethylation of olefinic amides with difluoromethyl sulfones has been explored. This method allows for an efficient and practical synthesis of a variety of CF 2 H-containing benzoxazines and oxazolines bearing various functional groups under mild conditions.

The binding of sinomenine to human serum albumin (HSA) in aqueous solution in the absence and presence of urea has been studied by fluorescence and the three-dimensional (3D) fluorescence at pH 7.40. Subdomain IIA binding site of human serum albumin (HSA) was characterized by examining the change in HSA fluorescence. The quenching rate constants and binding constants were calculated in the absence and presence of the denaturant. The results point to a static quenching mechanism operating in the complexes. However, the binding ability of sinomenine to denatured HSA is weaker than that of sinomenine to native HSA. Denaturation of HSA in the presence of urea is almost complete at [urea]≥ 8.0M. Upon unfolding, two fluorescence peaks were observed. One peak was assigned to the fluorescence of Trp-214 residue in a polar environment, and the other peak was assigned to the fluorescence of tyrosine residues. The asymmetric unit of the title co-crystal adduct, C(6)H(4)O(2)·C(6)F(4)I(2), comprises a half-mol-ecule each of cyclo-hexa-2,5-diene-1,4-dione and 1,2,4,5-tetra-fluoro-3,6-diiodo-benzene. The C(6)F(4)I(2) mol-ecule is almost planar (r.m.s. deviation = 0.0062 Å). In the crystal, the components are connected through O⋯I halogen bonds [3.017 (11) Å], leading to the formation of wavelike chains along the a axis. The crystal packing also features C-H⋯F inter-actions.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi are ubiquitous and ecologically important microbes in grasslands. Both the host plant species and soil properties have been suggested as potentially important factors structuring AM fungal communities based on studies within local field sites. However, characterizations of the communities in relation to both host plant identity and soil properties in natural plant communities across both local and broader geographic scales are rare. We examined the AM fungal spore communities associated with the same C(4) grasses in two Eastern serpentine grasslands, where soils have elevated heavy metals, and two Iowa tallgrass prairie sites. We compared AM fungal spore communities among host plants within each site, looked for correlations between fungal communities and local soil properties, and then compared communities among sites. Spore communities did not vary with host plant species or correlate with local soil chemical properties at any site. They did not differ between the two serpentine sites or between the two prairie sites, despite geographic separation, but they did differ between serpentine and prairie. Soil characteristics are suggested as a driving force because spore communities were strongly correlated with soil properties when data from all four sites are considered, but climatic differences might also play a role.

The binding of baicalein to bovine serum albumin (BSA) in the absence and presence of Cu2+ or Fe3+ in aqueous solution has been studied by fluorescence, synchronous fluorescence, ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectra, circular dichroism (CD) and the three-dimensional (3D) fluorescence at pH 7.40. The decrease of the binding constant in the presence of Cu2+ or Fe3+ may result from the competition of the metal ions and baicalein binding to BSA. The effect of baicalein on the conformation of BSA was analyzed using UV, CD, fluorescence and three-dimensional (3D) fluorescence. These results indicate that the binding of baicalein to BSA causes apparent change in the secondary structure of BSA, but does not affect the polarity around the chromophore molecule., (Copyright © 2010. The range of ecological roles exhibited by arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi depends on functional differences among naturally occurring local assemblages of AM species. While functional differences have been demonstrated among AM fungal species and among geographic isolates of the same species, almost nothing is known about functional differences among whole communities of naturally occurring AM fungi. In the greenhouse, we reciprocally transplanted whole AM fungal communities between plant-soil systems representing a serpentine grassland and a tallgrass prairie, using as hosts two grasses common to both systems. For Sorghastrum nutans, native fungi consistently enhanced plant growth more than fungi switched from the alternate system. For Schizachyrium scoparium, foreign and native fungi promoted plant growth similarly in both the serpentine and prairie systems. Thus, the use of foreign inoculum in restoration could change the relative performance, and potentially the competitive abilities, of co-occurring plant species. Moving AM fungal inocula into foreign environments also caused changes in the taxonomic composition of the resultant spore communities, demonstrating their response to environmental influences. These results provide strong evidence for functional differences among naturally occurring AM communities and suggest that a particular AM fungal community may be better matched ecologically to its local habitat than communities taken from other locations.

In the title compound, C(16)H(12)Br(2)O(6)·C(2)H(5)OH, the two benzene rings are twisted by 80.64 (5)° and the carboxyl groups form dihedral angles of 72.48 (3) and 89.41 (2)° with the corresponding benzene rings. In the crystal structure, the biphenyl mol-ecules are connected by inter-molecular O-H⋯O and O-H⋯Br hydrogen bonds, resulting in a chain along the b axis.

A series of hybrid phosphine-phosphoramidite ligands has been designed and synthesized in moderate yields from chiral BINOL (1,1'-bi-2-naphthol) or NOBIN (2-amino-2'-hydroxy-1,1'-binaphthyl). They have achieved highly regio- and enantioselectivities in Rh-catalyzed asymmetric hydroformylations of styrene derivatives (branched/linear ratio up to 56.6, ee up to 99 %), vinyl acetate derivatives (up to 98 % ee), and allyl cyanide (up to 96 % ee). Systematic variation of ligand structure showed that the steric factor on the phsophoramidite moiety determined the performance of the ligand. With the increased hindrance, the branched/linear ratio rose, while the ee value dropped in the hydroformylation of styrene. However, the N-substituents did not influence the selectivities much.

Interaction of 8-Acetyl-7-hydroxycoumarin with human serum albumin (HSA) at pH 7.40 has been investigated at 291, 301 and 310 K, respectively, employing the steady fluorescence, circular dichroism (CD) and molecular modeling methods. The quenching mechanism and binding constants were determined by the fluorescence quenching experiments. Thermodynamic data showed that 8-Acetyl-7-hydroxycoumarin was included in the hydrophobic cavity of HSA via hydrophobic interactions. The result of CD indicated that the binding of 8-Acetyl-7-hydroxycoumarin to HSA causes a slight conformational change of the protein. Furthermore, upon binding with HSA, the fluorescence spectra of the 8-Acetyl-7-hydroxycoumarin exhibits appreciable hypsochromic shift associated with an enhancement in the fluorescence intensity. The binding constant (K) and the standard free energy change (DeltaG0) have been also calculated according to the fluorescence data of the ligand, which is in good agreement with the values determined by fluorescence quenching data of HSA. Computational mapping of the possible binding sites of 8-Acetyl-7-hydroxycoumarin revealed that the molecule was bound in the large hydrophobic cavity of subdomain IIA mainly by the hydrophobic interaction and also by the hydrogen bonding interactions between 8-Acetyl-7-hydroxycoumarin and the residues His 242, Arg 222, and Arg 218.

In the title compound, C(12)H(14)N(4)·6H(2)O, the two pyrimidine rings make a dihedral angle of 5.285 (6)°. Inter-molecular O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds link the six water mol-ecules, generating edge-fused four-, five- or six-membered ring motifs and forming two-dimensional sheets. The sheets are stabilized by the formation of O-H⋯N hydrogen bonds between the water mol-ecules and the bipyrimidine mol-ecules, resulting in a three-dimensional network.

The title compound, C(23)H(17)F(2)NO, which crystallizes with two independent mol-ecules in the asymmetric unit, was prepared by the cyclization of 4-[2-bis-(4-fluoro-phen-yl)methyl-eneamino]but-3-yn-1-ol at room temperature. The mol-ecules display a tripod conformation. The two fluoro-phenyl rings make dihedral angles of 79.26 (2) and 85.87 (1)° [86.53 (1) and 83.67 (2)° in the second mol-ecule] with the indole ring, and the dihedral angles between the fluoro-phenyl rings are 67.74 (2) and 66.33 (2)°, respectively. Furthermore, the indole rings are located on the edge of the respective oxazine half-chair ring systems. Nonconventional C-H⋯π contacts between indole and fluoro-phenyl rings are observed.

Plants can alter soil properties in ways that feed back to affect plant performance. The extent that plant-soil feedback affects co-occurring plant species differentially will determine its impact on plant community structure. Whether feedback operates consistently across similar plant communities is little studied. Here, the same grasses from two eastern U.S. serpentine grasslands and two midwestern tallgrass prairie remnants were examined for plant-soil feedback in parallel greenhouse experiments. Native soils were homogenized and cultured (trained) for a year with each of the four grasses. Feedback was evaluated by examining biomass variation in a second generation of (tester) plants grown in the trained soils. Biomass was lower in soils trained by conspecifics compared to soils trained by heterospecifics in seven of 15 possible cases; biomass was greater in conspecific soils in one other. Sorghastrum nutans exhibited lower biomass in conspecific soils for all four grasslands, so feedback may be characteristic of this species. Three cases from the Hayden prairie site were explained by trainer species having similar effects across all tester species so the relative performance of the different species was little affected; plants were generally larger in soils trained by Andropogon gerardii and smaller in soils trained by S. nutans. Differences among sites in the incidence of feedback were independent of serpentine or prairie soils. To explore the causes of the feedback, several soil factors were measured as a function of trainer species: nutrients and pH, arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) spore communities, root colonization by AM fungi and putative pathogens, and functional diversity in bacterial communities as indicated by carbon substrate utilization. Only variation in nutrients was consistent with any patterns of feedback, and this could explain the greater biomass in soils trained by A. gerardii at Hayden. Feedback at Nottingham (one of the serpentine sites) differed, most notably for A. gerardii, from that of similar past studies that used different experimental protocols. To understand the consequences of feedback for plant community structure, it is important to consider how multiple species respond to the same plant-induced soil variation as well as differences in the feedback detected between greenhouse and field settings.

In the title compound, [RuCl(2)(C(16)H(32)P(2))(2)], the Ru(II) ion is situated on a twofold rotation axis, so the asymmetric unit contains one half-mol-ecule. The slightly distorted octa-hedral environment of the Ru center is formed by four P atoms [Ru-P = 2.4417 (6) and 2.4544 (6) Å] from two different (1S,1S',2R,2R')-TangPhos ligands [(1S,1S',2R,2R')-TangPhos = (1S,1S',2R,2R')-(+)-1,1'-di-tert-butyl-2,2'-diphospho-lane] and two Cl atoms [Ru-Cl = 2.4267 (5) Å].

A new type of dendritic 2-amino-2'-hydroxy-1,1'-binaphthyl (NOBIN)-derived Schiff-base ligands have been synthesized and applied to the titanium-catalyzed hetero-Diels-Alder reaction of Danishefsky's diene with aldehydes. These reactions afforded the corresponding 2-substituted 2,3-dihydro-4H-pyran-4-ones in quantitative yields and with excellent enantioselectivities (up to 97.2 % ee). The disposition of the dendritic wedges and the dendron size in the ligands were found to have significant impact on the enantioselectivity of the reaction. The recovered dendritic catalyst could be reused without further addition of the Ti source or a carboxylic acid additive for at least three cycles, retaining similar activity and enantioselectivity. The high stability of this type of assembled dendritic titanium catalyst may be attributed to the stabilization effect of large-sized dendron units in the catalyst molecule. The other important phenomenon observed with this catalyst system is that a higher degree of asymmetric amplification has been achieved by attachment of the dendron unit to the chiral ligand, which represents a new advantage of dendrimer catalysts for asymmetric reactions using chiral ligands of lower optical purity.

Combinatorial coordination chemistry strategy combined with high-throughput screening techniques has been successfully applied to engineering practical enantioselective catalysts for asymmetric hetero-Diels-Alder reaction. The reaction of Danishefsky's diene with a variety of aldehydes can be carried out with 0.1-0.005 mol % of H4-BINOL/Ti/H4-BINOL or H4-BINOL/Ti/H8-BINOL catalysts at room temperature under solvent- and MS-free conditions to afford dihydropyrone derivatives with up to quantitative yield and 99.8% ee.
