A familial syndrome is described which, to our knowledge, has not been previously reported. The entity is transmitted by the dominant mode of inheritance. It is characterized by an annular distribution of pigment, which predominates in the nasal and inferonasal retinal quadrants, and chronic edema of the optic nerve, progressing to optic atrophy. Edema of the optic nerve in any variant of retinitis pigmentosa (RP) has not been reported. We believe that the incidence of five cases in this family makes a unique syndrome. Because two of the members have been inadvertently studied for evidence of intracranial pathology, it was deemed necessary to report this family in the ophthalmic literature.
