Two investigations were carried out to assess the feasibility of using eye movement measures as nonintrusive indicants of mental workload. In the first experiment, measures of saccadic latency and eye movement velocity were obtained during alternating eye movement scans using an infrared tracking method and electro-oculographic techniques while subjects were differentially task loaded by simple moderate, and complex auditory tone counting. The latency and eye movement velocity measures changed but did not differ reliably as tone counting complexity (workload) was increased. In the second experiment, the spatial extent of spontaneous saccades was measured under three levels of tone counting complexity. The results indicated that the extent of such eye movements varied inversely (P less than .0151) as tone counting complexity increased. This indx appears to hold promise for the development of an objective indicator of mental workload. This project was designed to answer a series of questions involving extended practice on motor skills tasks. The tasks employed were video games, and principal interest was focused on whether: (1) performance late in practice involves fewer underlying factors than early in practice; (2) video games coverge or diverge differentially upon one another; and (3) factorial content of the games changes with practice. Thus far, the research has resulted in two reports. The first is a theoretical paper addressing the issue of how best to smooth correlational data. Two methods of smoothing Pearson r's were investigated. The first was to average repeated measures in blocks then correlate block averages. In the second method all repeated measures were correlated; then the correlation coefficients were averaged in blocks. The latter approach proved much superior resulting in greatly reduced sampling variability, and little distortion in the population correlation estimated. The second paper examined the question of late appearing factors that should occur after a switch from controlled to automatic processing. If differential factors associated with automatic processing exist, they could only be observed after this shift occurs., Prepared in cooperation with Pennsylvania State Univ. The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) was administered five separate times to fifty-seven men and women of military service age. The objective was to determine to what extent means and cross-session correlations are stable over sessions. Ten individual subtests, the derived ASVAB area composites (N=10) and the Armed Forces Qualification Test (AFQT) were examined for stability. The means and dispersions of scores for this population were below the national average. Means increased over sessions .5 standard deviations or more on half the subtests and consequently on most of the composite scores. Correlations for the composites were largely stable over sessions. Correlations between composites were generally lower than within composites.
