On wing pattern, O. liensis is close to O. trispina except for the evenly convex hind wing outer margin and the distinct black subtornal patch on the forewing. The male genitalia are close to those of O. sanguinea in that the uncus is broad and rounded, the median process of the gnathos is straight, the valva is broad and round, bearing a reversely pointed terminal process, the sacculus has a long process, the saccus is broad, with anterior margin truncate, and the aedeagus has posterior part in the form of a process. The main differences in the male genitalia between these two species are: the length of the sacculus, which is shorter in O. sanguinea but longer in O. liensis; the median process of the gnathos, which is narrower and pointed in O. liensis but broader and blunt in O. sanguinea; the saccus, which is more quadrate in O. sanguinea. In addition, the posterior margin of sternite 8 is flat in O. sanguinea but medially concave in O. liensis. The female genitalia lack a signum in both species.The female genitalia of O. liensis are illustrated and described here for the first time: the posterior apophyses are very short, and the anterior apophyses are long. The ostium bears lateral opercular structures. The wide ductus bursae is extremely short, and the corpus is broad, without signum. Distribution. For external comparison with O. shania and O. pulchripes see the diagnosis under O. shania. In addition, the apical brown patch and the brown basal part on the hind wing are more distinct in O. loochooana than in these two species. The male genitalia are somewhat similar to those of O. pulchripes in the slender sacculus. But the valva of O. loochooana is more elongate longitudinally, the sacculus is much longer and narrower, and only hooked at the distal part. The aedeagus is distinctive by bearing two rows of spiny teeth. Distribution. Oreta inflativalva Song, Xue & Han, sp. nov. Figs. 41, 89, 121, 150 Description. Head: Male antennae filiform. Frons brown. Head dark brown. Labial palpi pale brown, not projecting beyond frons. Tegula brown. Legs with long yellow to pale orange hairy scales, hind tibia with one pair of spurs. Wings: Forewing length 15.5���17.0 mm in male. Forewing apex round, protruding, not distinctly hooked; outer margin under apex slightly concave then slightly convex, that of hind wing smooth. Wings brown, diffused with black scales, and indistinct slightly wavy reddish brown stripes; both wings with antemedial and postmedial lines invisible, discal spot small, white; discocellulars of forewing decorated with white speckles. Underside: yellowish brown, diffused with dark scales; a blackish brown oblique line from apex to hind margin present on forewing. Fringes brown. Male genitalia: uncus short, with broad and expanded base and pointed tip; socii obsolete; gnathos with median process developed, nearly triangular, with rounded tip; valva broad, completely divided into a large costal lobe and a small sacculus; costal lobe rounded, with costa well sclerotized and ventral margin straight; sacculus with pointed spinose process; saccus large and rounded; aedeagus well sclerotized, with four large pointed teeth posteriorly; some very small spine-like cornuti on vesica. Tergite 8 narrow, concave medially at posterior margin; sternite 8 wider and broadly concave medially at posterior margin. Female genitalia: unknown. Material examined. O. inflativalva can be differentiated from other congeners by the lack of transverse lines on the upperside of both wings. The male genitalia are distinctive in that the costal lobe and the sacculus are totally separated, and the aedeagus bears four large teeth. Etymology. O. loochooana loochooana differs only marginally from O. loochooana timutia by the flat posterior margin of sternite 8, bearing two straight lateral protrusions, while in O. loochooana timutia it protrudes and is concave medially, bearing two inwardly bent lateral protrusions. The female genitalia have slightly narrower ovipositor lobes and a broader ductus bursae in O. loochooana loochooana. Distribution. The brown form is similar to O. andrema (see diagnosis under that species). The male genitalia are close to those of O. brunnea, but can be differentiated by the narrower and slightly pointed uncus, the slenderer median process of the gnathos, the nearly triangular valva (sometimes asymmetric, the hooked process of the left sacculus is distinctly shorter than that of the right one) with distal part slenderer, and the round anterior margin of the saccus. In O. brunnea, the uncus is broad, the median process of the gnathos is broader, the valva is bluntly triangular, and the sclerotized process of the sacculus is much broader. Distribution. The wing pattern resembles the brown form of O. paki, which is externally indistinguishable. Two species can be differentiated by the male genitalia. In O. turpis, the uncus is broader, the valva shorter, and the long sacculus smooth and without teeth, while in O. paki, the uncus is narrower, the valva longer, and the long sacculus bears two small teeth. The aedeagus of O. turpis bears a twisted and protruding sclerite, which is a developed dorsal sclerite in O. paki. The median process of the gnathos in O. turpis is much longer, the length being about two-thirds that of the sacculus, while in O. paki it is much shorter, with length less than half the length of the sacculus. In the female genitalia, the signum is situated more basally than in O. paki. Distribution. O. insignis is the only species in China belonging to the insignis -group. O. insignis shares a brown postmedial line from the forewing apex to hind margin with O. andrema, O. pavaca, O. trispinuligera, O. paki, O. hoenei and O. bilineata. O. bilineata has a distinct antemedial line on the forewing, which is indistinct in O. insignis. The forewing outer margin is less protruding than in O. hoenei, O. paki or O. trispinuligera. The white decorations near the discal cell are present in O. andrema but lacking in O. insignis and O. pavaca. The areas on either side of the postmedial line are unicolorous in O. insignis but much deeper inside the postmedial line in O. pavaca. The male genitalia differ from other Chinese species in the long saw-like valva and the large triangular basal process. The female genitalia have a signum in the corpus bursae. Distribution. O. pavaca pavaca is identical to O. pavaca sinensis on wing pattern. In the male genitalia, the posterior part of the aedeagus is smooth in the nominate subspecies but spined in O. pavaca sinensis, and the lateral posterior processes on the sternite 8 are longer and bent inwards in O. pavaca pavaca but shorter and straight in O. pavaca sinensis. Compared to other congeneric Chinese species, O. shania has a much narrower brown medial shade interior to the postmedial line on the forewing. O. shania, together with O. loochooana, and O. pulchripes has a round black subtornal patch on the fore wing hind margin. However, the forewing colour inside the oblique postmedial fascia is yellow in O. shania but reddish brown to brown in the other two species; the hind wing outer margin is evenly convex in O. shania and O. loochooana, but sinuous in O. pulchripes. The male genitalia of O. shania are similar to those of O. pulchripes in the expanded and tapering uncus base, the very slender median process of the gnathos, the broad and rounded valva, the sacculus with strongly sclerotized process, and the unmodified saccus. But they differ by following characters: the distal part of the uncus is much narrower and more pointed in O. shania but blunt in O. pulchripes; the median process of the gnathos is much longer in O. shania than in O. pulchripes; the sacculus bears a large broad sclerite with margin decorated with small pointed teeth in O. shania, but a long hooked and smooth process in O. pulchripes; the aedeagus is gradually and slightly sclerotized towards the posterior, without a distinct cornutus in O. shania, but well sclerotized and with two cornuti in O. pulchripes. The lateral processes on the posterior margin of sternite 8 are narrow in O. shania but very broad and flat in O. pulchripes. Distribution. China (Zhejiang, Fujian, Sichuan). Remarks. They can be distinguished by the following small differences: the forewing apex is blunter in N. olga but more pointed in N. purpureofascia; a black speckle is present inside the postmedial line before the angle in N. olga, but absent in N. purpureofascia; the valva is shorter and broader in N. olga than in N. purpureofascia; the anellus is slightly shorter and with smooth margin in N. olga, but longer and expanded medially in N. purpureofascia; two protrusions of the saccus are very close to each other in N. olga but further apart in N. purpureofascia. The both species are similar to N. excisa (Borneo, Malaysia, Sumatra) on external and genital characters. The hind wings of N. olga and N. purpureofascia are less excavated than those of N. excisa. In the male genitalia, N. olga and N. purpureofascia have more expanded socii; two median processes of the gnathos are much slenderer and bent inwards, but broader and straight in N. excisa; the valva is slender but distinctly swollen apically rather than broad at both ends and narrow medially in N. excisa; the two processes on the anellus are much shorter than in N. excisa. Leaf-borne vibrations are potentially important to caterpillars for communication and risk assessment. Yet, little is known about the vibratory environment of caterpillars, or how they detect and discriminate between vibrations from relevant and non-relevant sources. We measured the vibratory ‘landscape’ of the territorial masked birch caterpillar Drepana arcuata (Drepanidae), and assessed its ability to detect and respond to vibrations generated by conspecific and predatory intruders, wind and rain. Residents of leaf shelters were shown to respond to low amplitude vibrations generated by a crawling conspecific intruder, since removal of the vibrations through leaf incision prevented the resident’s response. Residents did not respond to large amplitude, low frequency disturbances caused by wind and rain alone, but did respond to approaching conspecifics under windy conditions, indicating an ability to discriminate between these sources. Residents also responded differently in the presence of vibrations generated by approaching predators (Podisus) and conspecifics. An analysis of vibration characteristics suggests that despite significant overlap between vibrations from different sources, there are differences in frequency and amplitude characteristics that caterpillars may use to discriminate between sources. Caterpillars live in a vibration-rich environment that we argue forms a prominent part of the sensory world of substrate bound holometabolous larvae.

Приводится 38 видов чешуекрылых из семейств Epicopeidae, Thyatiridae, Drepanidae, Lasiocampidae, Saturniidae, Sphingidae, Notodontidae, Lymantriidae, Arctiidae, собранных в 2011 году в верховьях р. Бурея, преимущественно на территории Буреинского заповедника. Из них 10 видов в бассейне Верхней Буреи отмечены впервые (Falcaria lacertinaria L., Hyloicus morio Rothsc. et Jord., Cerura felina Butl., Furcula bicuspis Borkh., Notodonta stigmatica Mats., Odontosia patricia Stich., Gluphisia crenata Esp., Pygaera timon Hbn., Clostera pigra Hufn., Calliteara pudibunda L.). Также 17 видов впервые указаны для территории Буреинского заповедника. Notodonta stigmatica Mats. является новым видом для фауны Хабаровского края.

Tridrepana bicuspidata Song, Xue & Han, sp. nov. Figs 46–49, 78, 101, 123–124, 136 Description. Head: Antenna fulvous, bipectinate in male. Frons brown in upper half, pale yellow in the rest, smoothly scaled. Labial palpus yellow, brown at apex, about one third extending beyond frons in male. Vertex pale fulvous. Thorax. Dorsum yellow. Legs pale yellow, slightly brown at apex. Hind tibia in male with one pair of terminal spurs, outer spur shorter than inner one. Length of forewing: ♂ 14–16 mm. Wings: forewing with apex falcate, outer margin under apex nearly straight. Ground colour yellow on both wings. Forewing with brown crescent patch below apex; antemedial line indistinct; postmedial line brown, wavy, not reaching costa, angled inwards below M 1 and outwards on M 3, bounded exteriorly by an indistinct pale brown line; submarginal line composed of a series of blackish spots, much larger and blacker between R 5 and M 3, on the inner margin of the apical crescent patch; mid-cell, cell and posterodistal spots white, surrounded with reddish brown. Hind wing with postmedial line curved, indistinct, bent inwards on anal fold, accompanied by a series of dots posteriorly; submarginal line black, regularly punctuate; discal and posterodistal spots white, ringed with brown. Ventral side yellow, markings almost invisible, except brown crescent patch on forewing apex; anterior part of postmedial line brown, punctuate; forewing with discal spot large and brown, posterodistal spot visible in some specimens, small and brown. Venation. Forewing: R 1 anastomosing with R 2-4 for a short distance in basal one third of areole, R 2 diverging before the apex of areole, M 1 stalked with lower margin of areole. Abdomen. Yellow, slender. Male genitalia. Uncus sclerotized, bifurcate, branches of uncus also bifurcate medially, with outer process long, curving outwards, inner process short, about one third length of outer forks, triangular and sharply pointed apically. Socii weakly sclerotized, broad and short. Dorsal part of gnathos broad, semicircular, hairy; ventral plate of gnathos trapezoid, with two digitiform processes. Valva long, arcuate, not reaching apex of uncus, terminal half gradually narrowing toward apex, bending upwards. Saccus slender and elongate, as long as uncus. Anellus strongly sclerotized, almost a long plate, basal part convex, with two broad basal branches. Aedeagus slender, sclerotized posteriorly, cornuti a patch of large spines. The eighth tergite quadrate, with posterior margin slightly concave; the eighth sternite bell-like, with posterior margin a little extended. Female genitalia. Ovipositor short, two oval processes near the ostium bursae. Apophyses posteriores slightly longer than apophyses anteriores. Ductus bursae sclerotized and long. Corpus bursae oval, membranous, with two scobinate spindle-shaped signa. Diagnosis. This new species belongs to the crocea species group, and is close to T. bifurcata in the similar ground colour, spots and patches on the wings. In the male genitalia, T. bicuspidata and T. bifurcata are distinctive in that each branch of the uncus divides into two parts, with the inner one shorter and the outer one longer. The inner process is broad and triangular in T. bicuspidata, but slender and spur-like in T. bifurcata, and the outer process is longer and curved outwards in the former but shorter and curved inwards in the latter. In addition, the ventral plate of the gnathos is trapezoid with two digitiform processes in T. bicuspidata but nearly butterfly-shaped with two broad processes in T. bifurcata. Material examined. Labial palpus pale yellow, reaching frons in male. Vertex with anterior half brownish yellow, posterior half pale yellow. Thorax. Dorsum and legs pale yellow. Both mid and hind tibia in male with one pair of terminal spurs, outer spur shorter than inner one. Length of forewing: ♂ 13 mm. Wings: forewing apex moderately falcate, outer margin under apex slightly concave. Ground colour pale yellow. Forewing with brown crescent patch under apex, with one brownish black ovate spot inside; antemedial line grayish brown, punctuate; postmedial line brown, punctuate, bent inwards below M 1 and outwards between M 2 and CuA 2; discal spot and mid-cell spot grayish brown, posterodistal spot a white strip, ringed with brown; two big round grayish brown patches near lower angle of cell, below base of M 3 and CuA 1, each with a dark brown ovate spot inside; fringes dark brown from apex to M 3, bright yellow below M 3. This new species belongs to the sadana species group, and is close to T. sadana, T. finita, T. hypha and T. adelpha. On the wing pattern, the ground colour and the patches near the lower angle of the forewing cell in T. subadelpha are paler than in those four species; the forewing apex is less falcate than in T. sadana and T. adelpha. In the male genitalia, T. subadelpha is distinctive in that each lobe of the uncus divides into two parts, the inner semicircular and the outer extended into a digitiform process. The lobes of the uncus are not bifid in T. sadana (Fig. 62), T. hypha (Fig. 65) and T. finita (Fig. 66). In addition, the median process of the gnathos is less broad and flat than in T. sadana. T. subadelpha is different from T. adelpha (Figs 64, 88) in that: the uncus is deeply bifurcate, but just concave in T. adelpha; the inner half of the uncus lobe is semicircular, but truncate in T. adelpha; the outer branch is much longer and thicker, well extended beyond the inner half, with obtuse apex, but in T. adelpha the outer branch is distinctly smaller, and the apex is acute. Two brownish black spots are present under M 3 and CuA 1 near the lower angle of the cell on the forewing, instead of big grayish brown patches centered by dark spots as in T. finita; the postmedial line is thin and deeply wavy, nearly continuous. In the male genitalia, the two lobes of the uncus are triangular, with the lateral margins oblique, while in T. finita, the lobes of the uncus are nearly quadrate, with lateral sides nearly erect. Remarks. Chu & Wang (1988) described T. flava sinica based on five males and one female, which they designated as the holotype, allotype and four paratypes. However only the holotype and two paratypes can be found in the collection of IZCAS at present. The rest of the type series is missing. The external features of T. flava sinica are identical to those of T. flava flava. Its male genitalia are also identical to those of T. flava flava based on figures in Watson (1957). The type localities of T. flava sinica (Jiangxi and Hainan Provinces, China) are partly sympatric with those of T. flava flava in China (Fujian, Taiwan, Guangdong, Hainan, Guangxi and Yunnan Provinces). The complete mitochondrial genome of the Drepane punctata was presented in our study. The mitochondrial genome is 16,397 bp long and consists of 13 protein-coding genes, two rRNA genes, 16 tRNA genes and a control region. The gene order and composition of D. punctata mitochondrial genome was different from that of most other vertebrates. The nucleotide compositions of the light strand are 24.56% of A, 16.02% of C, 27.81% of T and 31.61% of G. With the exception of the NADH dehydrogenase subunit 6 (ND6) and five tRNA genes, all other mitochondrial genes are encoded on the heavy strand.

Vibrational communication in hook-tip moth caterpillars is thought to be widely used and highly variable across species, but this phenomenon has been experimentally examined in only two species to date. The purpose of this study is to characterize and describe the function of vibrational signaling in a species, Oreta rosea Walker 1855 (Lepidoptera: Drepanidae), that differs morphologically from previously studied species. Caterpillars of this species produce three distinct types of vibrational signals during territorial encounters with conspecifics — mandible drumming, mandible scraping and lateral tremulation. Signals were recorded using a laser-doppler vibrometer and characterized based on temporal and spectral components. Behavioural encounters between a leaf resident and a conspecific intruder were staged to test the hypothesis that signaling functions as a territorial display. Drumming and scraping signals both involve the use of the mandibles, being hit vertically on, or scraped laterally across, the leaf surface. Lateral tremulation involves quick, short, successive lateral movements of the anterior body region that vibrates the entire leaf. Encounters result in residents signaling, with the highest rates observed when intruders make contact with the resident. Residents signal significantly more than intruders and most conflicts are resolved within 10 minutes, with residents winning 91% of trials. The results support the hypothesis that vibrational signals function to advertise leaf occupancy. Signaling is compared between species, and evolutionary origins of vibrational communication in caterpillars are discussed.

We investigated the hypothesis that earless moths defend themselves from bats in a southeastern Ontario site by means of their flight behaviour. In this study we assume that the time taken by a moth to initiate flight from a stationary perch (flight tendency) will reflect its overall flightedness throughout the night. We predicted that earless moths would exhibit a reduced flight tendency relative to eared moths because moths at this site are primarily at risk of predation from bats while flying. When grouped, earless taxa displayed a significantly greater mean interval to flight departure than eared taxa. Most species of the earless families Saturniidae, Sphingidae, and Lasiocampidae were more likely to remain stationary and took longer to initiate flight than members of the eared families Noctuidae, Notodontidae, Geometridae, Arctiidae, and Drepanidae. We conclude that for most earless moths the hypothesis of reduced flight defence is supported, but there are exceptions to our results that suggest the existence of other antibat defences (e.g., seasonal isolation in a spring-emerging lasiocampid). The evolution of ears in moths and the potential reproductive costs of not possessing them are discussed.

A molecular phylogenetic study of the Drepanoidea based on the EF-1α sequences and combined EF-1α and COI sequences was carried out in order to infer higher classification at and above the subfamily level. The sample contained 14 taxa representing 13 genera recognized in the Drepanoidea. The results revealed that the Drepaninae, Thyatirinae and Cyclidiinae respectively form monophyletic groups. The sister relationship between the Drepaninae and the Thyatirinae was validated. The monophyly of the Cyclidiinae with the Drepaninae+Thyatirinae was supported robustly.Hypsomadius insignisandOreta vatamawithin the traditional definition of the Drepaninae formed an individual clade with robust support (100%) and constitutes a sister relationship to a clade containing the rest of the Drepaninae in all the topologies, which means that the subfamily Oretinae of the Drepanidae should be restored. The family Drepanidae is divided into four subfamilies: Drepaninae, Oretinae, Thyatirinae and Cyclidiinae in this work. The family Epicopeiidae formed a monophyly with high bootstrap values. The result of combined analysis of EF-1α and COI showed that the Epicopeiidae have a closer phylogenetic relationship with the Geometridae than with the Drepanidae and belong to neither the Drepanoidea nor the Geometroidea.

A total of three tribes, 38 genera and 148 species of Thyatirinae from China are listed together with one dubious record. Of these, one new species, Stenopsestis bruna sp. nov., is described. Macrothyatira danieli Werny, 1966, stat. rev., is restored to specific rank. Cymatophora subampliata Houlbert, 1921, is downgraded to subspecific rank as Tethea (Tethea) albicostata subampliata (Houlbert, 1921), stat. nov. SUMMARY This study presents anatomical and physiological evidence for a sense of hearing in hooktip moths (Drepanoidea). Two example species, Drepana arcuata and Watsonalla uncinula, were examined. The abdominal ears of drepanids are structurally unique compared to those of other Lepidoptera and other insects, by having an internal tympanal membrane, and auditory sensilla embedded within the membrane. The tympanum is formed by two thin tracheal walls that stretch across a teardrop-shaped opening between dorsal and ventral air chambers in the first abdominal segment. There are four sensory organs (scolopidia) embedded separately between the tympanal membrane layers: two larger lateral scolopidia within the tympanal area, and two smaller scolopidia at the medial margin of the tympanal frame. Sound is thought to reach the tympanal membrane through two external membranes that connect indirectly to the dorsal chamber. The ear is tuned to ultrasonic frequencies between 30 and 65 kHz, with a best threshold of around 52 dB SPL at 40 kHz, and no apparent difference between genders. Thus, drepanid hearing resembles that of other moths,indicating that the main function is bat detection. Two sensory cells are excited by sound stimuli. Those two cells differ in threshold by approximately 19 dB. The morphology of the ear suggests that the two larger scolopidia function as auditory sensilla; the two smaller scolopidia, located near the tympanal frame, were not excited by sound. We present a biophysical model to explain the possible functional organization of this unique tympanal ear.
