303. Deterministic Data Distribution for Efficient Recovery in Erasure-Coded Storage Systems

Abstract

Due to individual unreliable commodity components, failures are common in large-scale distributed storage systems. Erasure codes are widely deployed in practical storage systems to provide fault tolerance with low storage overhead. However, random data distribution (RDD), commonly used in erasure-coded storage systems, induces heavy cross-rack traffic, load imbalance, and random access, which adversely affects failure recovery. In this paper, with orthogonal arrays, we define a Deterministic Data Distribution ($D^3$) to uniformly distribute data/parity blocks among nodes, and propose an efficient failure recovery approach based on $D^3$, which minimizes the cross-rack repair traffic against a single node failure. Thanks to the uniformity of $D^3$, the proposed recovery approach balances the repair traffic not only among nodes within a rack but also among racks. We implement $D^3$ over Reed-Solomon codes and Locally Repairable Codes in Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) with a cluster of 28 machines. Compared with RDD, our experiments show that $D^3$ significantly speeds up the failure recovery up to 2.49 times for RS codes and 1.38 times for LRCs. Abstract

Lipase-catalyzed regioselective synthesis of neohesperidin ester derivatives was performed by Lipase TL IM from Thermomyces lanuginosus in a continuous-flow microreactor and then their antimicrobial activity was studied. It appears that neohesperidin, neohesperidin dihydrochalcone with primary OH on the sugar part is the most reactive substrate. Various reaction parameters were investigated including substrate molar ratio, reaction time and temperature. Maximum conversion (92%) was obtained under the optimal condition of substrate molar ratio of 8:1 (vinyl esters: neohesperidin) at 52 °C for about 35 min. Then, the antibacterial activity of modified neohesperidin ester derivatives was examined and showed great improvement against gram negative and gram positive bacteria.

317. A Novel Hierarchically Lightweight Porous Carbon Derived from Egg White for Strong Microwave Absorption

Abstract

Egg custard is a common dish on the dining table and exhibits a uniform porous structure after freeze-drying. The protein within egg custard is a rich source of carbon and nitrogen, and the custard’s unique microstructure and adjustable electrical properties make it a potential porous carbon precursor. Herein, nitrogen in situdoped porous carbons (NPCs) and potassium-carbonate-modified NPCs (PNPCs) are obtained through a simple gelation and carbonization process using egg white as the raw material. The unique morphologies of the porous carbon are inherited from the protein and include fibrous clusters, honeycomb holes, and a grooved skeleton. Their excellent impedance matching and effective internal loss make the obtained porous carbons good candidates for lightweight electromagnetic (EM) wave absorbers without the need to dope with metal elements. As a representative porous carbon, PNPC10-700 has multiple structures, including fibrous clusters, honeycomb holes, and a porous skeleton. Moreover, it achieves a maximum reflection loss value of −66.15 dB (with a thickness of 3.77 mm) and a broad effective absorption bandwidth of 5.82 GHz (from 12.18 to 18.00 GHz, with a thickness of 2.5 mm), which surpasses the reported values in most of the literature. Thus, gelation combined with the further carbonization of egg white (protein) is a new method for designing the morphology and EM properties of porous carbon absorbers.

318. Research on microstructure and properties of Ti-based coating prepared by laser cladding on titanium alloy: simulation and experiment

Abstract

The heat transfer and solidification characteristics significantly affect the solidified microstructure of direct laser deposited coatings. In this work, a Ti-based coating was prepared on the Ti811 alloy by coaxial laser cladding to reveal the in-situ synthesis mechanism of the reinforcing phase and enhance its mechanical properties. The heat transfer evolution and solidification characteristics of the molten pool were investigated by numerical simulations and experiments. The phase composition, microstructure, interface characteristics, nano-hardness, and tribological properties of the deposited coating were studied. The results showed that the sufficient temperature of the molten pool ensured the formation of a deposited coating. The Marangoni convection of the molten pool facilitated the powder particles melting process as well as the uniformity of the reinforcing phase distribution. In addition, the temperature gradient and solidification rate at the upper of the solidified interface increased 2.27 and 29 times, respectively, compared to those at the bottom of the solidified interface. Thermodynamic and simulation results determined the precipitation sequence and mechanism of the phases. Due to the solid solution strengthening, dispersion strengthening effects, and robust interfacial bonding between phases, the nano-hardness of the deposited coating was 2.5 times higher than the substrate. Compared to the Ti811 alloy, the friction coefficient of the coating was reduced by around 30%. The tribological properties of the deposited coating dramatically improved, and the wear mechanism was mainly abrasive wear. This work theoretically and experimentally revealed the primary mechanism of in-situ enhancement to protect titanium alloys.

Stem cell-based therapies exhibit profound therapeutic potential for treating various human diseases, including cancer. Among the cell types that can be used for this purpose, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are considered as promising source of stem cells in personalized cell-based therapies. The inherent tumor-tropic property of MSCs can be used to target cancer cells. Although the impacts of MSCs on tumor progression remain elusive, they have been genetically modified or engineered as targeted anticancer agents which could inhibit tumor growth by blocking different processes of tumor. In addition, there are close interactions between MSCs and cancer stem cells (CSCs). MSCs can regulate the growth of CSCs through paracrine mechanisms. This review aims to focus on the current knowledge about MSCs-based tumor therapies, the opportunities and challenges, as well as the prospective of its further clinical implications.

Abstract

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a major cancer burden worldwide with increasing incidence in many developed countries. Super-enhancers (SEs) drive gene expressions required for cell type-specificity and tumor cell identity. However, their roles in HCC remain unclear because of data scarcity from primary tumors. Herein, chromatin profiling of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)-associated HCCs and matched liver tissues uncovered an average of ∼500 somatically-acquired SEs per patient. The identified SE-target genes were functionally enriched for aberrant metabolism and cancer phenotypes, especially chromatin regulators including deacetylases and Polycomb repressive complexes. Notably, all examined tumors exhibited SE activation of Sirtuin 7 (SIRT7), genome-wide promoter H3K18 deacetylation and concurrent H3K27me3, as well as tumor-suppressor gene silencing. Depletion of SIRT7 SE in hepatoma cells induced global H3K18 acetylation and reactivated key metabolic and immune regulators, leading to marked suppression of tumorigenicity in vitro and in vivo. In concordance, SIRT7 physically interacted with the methyltransferase EZH2, and they were co-expressed in primary HCCs. In summary, our integrative analysis establishes a compendium of SEs in NAFLD-associated HCCs and uncovers SIRT7-driven chromatin regulatory network as potential druggable vulnerability of this increasingly prevalent cancer. 347. Host habitats influence the gut microbial assembly mechanisms of cold-water fish

Abstract

Due to factors such as overfishing, hydropower development, and water pollution, their wild populations have drastically declined, with many species being classified as endangered or vulnerable. Understanding the driving factors behind the gut microbiota of cold-water fish holds significant implications for conservation. Therefore, to investigate the influence of different factors on the gut microbes of cold-water fish, 112 gut samples from farmed and wild habitats were collected from Schizothorax wangchiachii(herbivorous), Schizothorax kozlovi(omnivorous) and Percocypris pingi(carnivorous), in the Jinping Dahewan range of lower reaches of the Yalong River. The results of 16 S rRNA gene sequencing of the gut contents showed that habitat was the major factor influencing the gut microbes of the three cold-water fishes. In terms of microbial composition, farmed cold-water fish exhibited a dominant bacterial phylum, Proteobacteria (82 %), while those in wild environment presented multiple dominant taxa, such as Proteobacteria (38 %), Fusobacteria (30 %), Firmicutes (11 %), and Cyanobacteria (11 %). Gut microbial diversity, both α diversity and β diversity, in wild cold-water fish was significantly higher than that in farmed individuals. Network complexity of gut microbiota was notably higher in wild cold-water fish than in farmed individuals. From farmed to wild environments, the relative influence of deterministic processes in the gut microbiota assembly mechanism of cold-water fish gradually diminishes, while the contribution of stochastic processes steadily increases. The gut microbiota construction mechanism in farmed cold-water fish was primarily influenced by deterministic processes of homogeneous selection, while in wild cold-water fish, it was mainly driven by stochastic processes of homogeneous dispersal. Overall, this study is an important reference for the study of the gut microbiota of cold-water fish and the conservation of their wild populations.

Abstract

Na‐seawater batteries (SWBs) are environmentally friendly energy storage system that utilizes abundant seawater as an electrolyte alternative to conventional distilled water‐based and organic electrolytes. To achieve high energy efficiency in Na‐SWBs, it is necessary to enhance the activity of bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts. In this study, an atomically dispersed iron and cobalt dual‐atom nitrogen‐doped lens‐shaped mesoporous carbon (FeCo‐LMC) particles is synthesized as a SWB cathode material using the spinodal decomposition of the polymer blend and selective precursor positioning. The well‐aligned mesoporous structure and synergetic effect of the dual‐atom site realize FeCo‐LMC as a comparable bifunctional oxygen catalyst with the lowest overpotential difference (EOER−EORR) among the other catalysts with natural seawater electrolyte. When applied to the SWB system, the FeCo‐LMC shows a highly improved charge/discharge performance compared to Pt/C and a stable cycling performance for 200 h. Density functional theory calculations reveal the enhanced oxygen catalytic activity of FeCo‐LMC owing to electron delocalization and d‐band center adjustment of FeN4–CoN4 structure. In this work, a simple and efficient method for Markovnikov addition of imidazole derivatives to vinyl esters catalyzed by Lipozyme TL IM/K2CO3 in a continuous-flow microreactor was described. The effects of the mixed catalysts, molar ratio and the structure of reactants on the reaction performance were experimentally studied. The attractive features of this process are shorter reaction times (30 min) and excellent yields compared to that in shaker reactors.

Abstract

• Effect of density value and gradient distribution on the deformation mechanism of foamed concrete is studied. • The strength of pore walls significantly influences the failure mechanism of foamed concrete. • Each layer of gradient foamed concrete displays a failure mode corresponding to its respective density. • The later damaged layers in the gradient specimen are affected by the former damaged layers leading to failure to achieve the expected strength. • A statistical model is developed to predict the whole compressive curve of foamed concrete. Foamed concrete is an essential material in engineering that can be categorized into two types based on density distribution, namely uniform foamed concrete (UFC) and gradient foamed concrete (GFC). However, there exists a research gap concerning the mesoscopic deformation mechanism of UFC and GFC. The objective of this research is to bridge this gap by examining the quasi-static compression characteristics of UFCs with three distinct densities and GFCs with different density sequences. The results reveal that the strength of pore walls significantly influences the failure mechanism of UFCs with varying densities. Specifically, UFCs with low density exhibit weak pore-wall strength, leading to stress concentration at the pore-wall junction. During compression, these weak pore walls are widely dispersed within the specimen, resulting in a powdering failure mode. Conversely, UFCs with high density possess stronger pore walls, which prevent the powdering failure mode by maintaining adequate pore-wall strength. Nevertheless, the existence of a dominant crack within the specimen results in a splitting failure mode. In the context of GFCs, deformation occurs in a sequence from low to high density, with each layer exhibiting a failure mode corresponding to its density. Note that the last-deforming layer in this brittle gradient foam cannot attain the strength of the corresponding uniform foam. This is due to the failure of the second layer, which results in uneven contact surfaces and prompts the third layer to crack simultaneously. Finally, a statistical model is developed to forecast the compressive Stress–strain curve of foamed concrete, demonstrating remarkable agreement with experimental data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
