Abstract

The observational detection of a localized reduction in the small planet occurrence rate, sometimes termed a 'gap', is an exciting discovery because of the implications for planet evolutionary history. This gap appears to define a transition region in which sub-Neptune planets are believed to have lost their H/He envelope, potentially by photoevaporation or core powered mass loss, and have thus been transformed into bare cores terrestrial planets. Here we investigate the transition between sub-Neptunes and super-Earths using a real sample of observed small close-in planets and applying envelope evolution models of the H/He envelope together with the mass-radius diagram and a photoevaporation model. We find that photoevaporation can explain the H/He envelope loss of most super-Earths in 100Myr, although an additional loss mechanism appears necessary in some planets. We explore the possibility that these planets families have different core mass and find a continuum in the primordial population of the strongly irradiated super-Earths and the sub-Neptunes. Abstract

A study was conducted to analyze endogenous glucocorticoid secretion, hepatic damage, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, and interleukin-10 mRNA expression and release in rats treated with carbon tetrachloride. Results indicated that the occurrence of endogenous glucocorticoid release correlated with acute toxic liver injury in the rat and hinders the inflammatory response independent of effects of tumor necrosis factor-alpha.

Abstract

Launching in 2028, ESA's Atmospheric Remote-sensing Exoplanet Large-survey (ARIEL) survey of $\sim$1000 transiting exoplanets will build on the legacies of Kepler and TESS and complement JWST by placing its high precision exoplanet observations into a large, statistically-significant planetary population context. With continuous 0.5--7.8~$\mu$m coverage from both FGS (0.50--0.55, 0.8--1.0, and 1.0--1.2~$\mu$m photometry; 1.25--1.95~$\mu$m spectroscopy) and AIRS (1.95--7.80~$\mu$m spectroscopy), ARIEL will determine atmospheric compositions and probe planetary formation histories during its 3.5-year mission. NASA's proposed Contribution to ARIEL Spectroscopy of Exoplanets (CASE) would be a subsystem of ARIEL's FGS instrument consisting of two visible-to-infrared detectors, associated readout electronics, and thermal control hardware. FGS, to be built by the Polish Academy of Sciences' Space Research Centre, will provide both fine guiding and visible to near-infrared photometry and spectroscopy, providing powerful diagnostics of atmospheric aerosol contribution and planetary albedo, which play a crucial role in establishing planetary energy balance. The CASE team presents here an independent study of the capabilities of ARIEL to measure exoplanetary metallicities, which probe the conditions of planet formation, and FGS to measure scattering spectral slopes, which indicate if an exoplanet has atmospheric aerosols (clouds and hazes), and geometric albedos, which help establish planetary climate. Our design reference mission simulations show that ARIEL could measure the mass-metallicity relationship of its 1000-planet single-visit sample to $>7.5\sigma$ and that FGS could distinguish between clear, cloudy, and hazy skies and constrain an exoplanet's atmospheric aerosol composition to $>5\sigma$ for hundreds of targets, providing statistically-transformative science for exoplanet atmospheres., Comment: accepted to PASP; 23 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

The effects of obstructive cholestasis on the levels of hypothalamic nitric oxide synthase (NOS) and steady-state NOS messenger RNA (mRNA) were analyzed in rats with bile duct resection. Analysis of the hypothalamus of rats with cholestasis due to bile duct resection indicated the role of cholestasis in reducing the number of hypothalamic NOS-containing neurons in the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus. Analysis of nitrite release from hypothalamic explants of cholestatic rats also indicated the presence of reduced NOS activity and increased levels of steady-state NOS mRNA levels.

Abstract

Due to the efforts by numerous ground-based surveys and NASA's Kepler and TESS, there will be hundreds, if not thousands, of transiting exoplanets ideal for atmospheric characterization via spectroscopy with large platforms such as JWST and ARIEL. However their next predicted mid-transit time could become so increasingly uncertain over time that significant overhead would be required to ensure the detection of the entire transit. As a result, follow-up observations to characterize these exoplanetary atmospheres would require less-efficient use of an observatory's time---which is an issue for large platforms where minimizing observing overheads is a necessity. Here we demonstrate the power of citizen scientists operating smaller observatories ($\le$1-m) to keep ephemerides "fresh", defined here as when the 1$\sigma$ uncertainty in the mid-transit time is less than half the transit duration. We advocate for the creation of a community-wide effort to perform ephemeris maintenance on transiting exoplanets by citizen scientists. Such observations can be conducted with even a 6-inch telescope, which has the potential to save up to $\sim$10,000~days for a 1000-planet survey. Based on a preliminary analysis of 14 transits from a single 6-inch MicroObservatory telescope, we empirically estimate the ability of small telescopes to benefit the community. Observations with a small-telescope network operated by citizen scientists are capable of resolving stellar blends to within 5''/pixel, can follow-up long period transits in short-baseline TESS fields, monitor epoch-to-epoch stellar variability at a precision 0.67\%$\pm$0.12\% for a 11.3 V-mag star, and search for new planets or constrain the masses of known planets with transit timing variations greater than two minutes., Comment: 26 pages, 15 figures; published in PASP

Abstract

The concept of a mission devoted to atmospheric characterization of exoplanets through transit spectroscopy was first considered in Europe in 2007, shortly after the DARWIN proposal submitted to ESA for the first Cosmic Vision call for L-class missions was rejected because of the need for further scientific and technical developments. Following the decision, both ESA (EP-RAT panel report, October 2010) and the Exoplanetary Community (Blue Dot Team – Barcelona conference, September 2009) started a discussion to define a roadmap for exoplanetary research. Both groups concluded that an intermediate step was needed, both scientifically and technically, before the characterisation of Earth-like planets could be tackled, and recommended a transit spectroscopy mission as a first step to atmospheric characterisation. A short study was undertaken at ESTEC in the context of the ExoPlanet Roadmap Advisory Team mandate under the name ESM (Exoplanet Spectroscopy Mission). Following this study the Exoplanet Characterisation Observatory (EChO) was proposed and accepted for assessment phase study in the context of the ESA Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 programme M3 medium class mission opportunity. Although eventually not selected, the EChO study1 allowed further development of the technical building blocks and the science case for an eventual transit spectroscopy mission. In response to the call for the next medium class opportunity, Cosmic Vision M4, a proposal was submitted in January 2015: the Atmospheric Remote-sensing InfraRed Large-survey (ARIEL). The mission was one of the three selected in June 2015 for study in a Phase 0/A, a competitive assessment phase2. Abstract

The existence of worlds beyond our own has been a subject of fascination and inspiration since the times of the ancient Greeks. The first exoplanet discovery in Wolszczan and Frail 1992 led to a revolution that sparked the scientific community to develop new space missions (e.g. Kepler, TESS and ARIEL) and instruments (e.g. HARPS, GPI, etc.) purely dedicated to exoplanet science (Borucki et al. 2010; Ricker et al. 2015; Tinetti et al. 2016; Mayor et al. 2003; Macintosh et al. 2006). The thousands of exoplanets discovered over the past decade have mostly been Earth-sized planets around low-mass stars. The potential of habitable planets drives the field towards detailed spectroscopic observations to better characterize their mass and/or atmospheric composition. Planetary search surveys from the ground and space are expected to detect more exoplanets orbiting nearby stars, which is conducive for atmospheric characterization. This dissertation addresses two main questions, how can we identify which stars have transiting exoplanets and what are the atmospheres of these planets made of? Currently, the transit method of detection is one of the most successful tools for probing the size and orbits of planetary systems. However, for Earth-sized planets the signal is small (∼100 ppm for a Sun-like star) and comparable to the photometric noise from the host star (∼0.1-1%). The manual interpretation of such data is labor-intensive and subject to human error, the results of which can be difficult to quantify. I present a new method for combining existing techniques with machine learning in order to expedite, automate, and increase the robustness of processing large observational data sets. The technique is applied to Kepler and TESS data where I find evidence for 3 new multi-planet systems. The second part of my dissertation focuses on atmospheric characterization where I use spectroscopic observations to search for signatures of Na in the hot-Jupiter XO-2b.

Tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) has a positive stimulatory effect on adrenal corticosterone secretion in cholestatic rats. Studies of TNF-alpha-induced activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis in bile duct-resected cholestatic rats and sham-resected rats show higher corticosterone levels in cholestatic rats. This enhanced adrenal steroidogenic response is possibly due to heightened adrenal prostaglandin E(sub 2) release.

Exogenous administration of glucocorticoids inhibits neutrophil recruitment to inflammatory sites, but the effects of endogenously released glucocorticoids are unknown. An assessment of the effect of elevated endogenous glucocorticoid levels on leukocyte recruitment in the rat carrageenan-induced pleurisy model of acute localized inflammation shows that endogenous glucocorticoids inhibit inflammatory response by inhibiting the accumulation of leukocytes at the sites of inflammation.

Abstract

The tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) is involved in the pathogenesis of the gastric injury caused by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). However, NSAID-induced leukocyte adherence is independent of TNF-alpha. The administration of indomethacin to rats enhances TNF-alpha levels within 30 min, and causes gastric erosion. Pretreatment with dexamethasone and prostaglandin E2 inhibits the increase in TNF-alpha level, and prevents gastric injury. The inhibition of TNF-alpha synthesis prevents gastric ulceration, but has no effect on leukocyte adherence.

Abstract

Acute pancreatitis is a common disease with significant associated morbidity and mortality. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of population-based studies to explore the changing temporal trends of acute pancreatitis incidence globally. We performed a systematic literature search to identify population-based studies reporting the annual incidence of acute pancreatitis. Abstracts were assessed independently to identify applicable articles for full-text review and data extraction. Joinpoint temporal trend analyses were performed to calculate the average annual percent change (AAPC) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). The AAPCs were pooled in a meta-analysis to capture the overall and regional trends in acute pancreatitis incidence over time. Temporal data were summarized in a static map and an interactive, web-based map. Forty-four studies reported the temporal incidence of acute pancreatitis (online interactive map: https://kaplan-acute-pancreatitis-ucalgary.hub.arcgis.com/). The incidence of acute pancreatitis has increased from 1961 to 2016 (AAPC, 3.07%; 95% CI, 2.30% to 3.84%; n = 34). Increasing incidence was observed in North America (AAPC, 3.67%; 95% CI, 2.76% to 4.57%; n = 4) and Europe (AAPC, 2.77%; 95% CI, 1.91% to 3.63%; n = 23). The incidence of acute pancreatitis was stable in Asia (AAPC, –0.28%; 95% CI, –5.03% to 4.47%; n = 4). This meta-analysis provides a comprehensive overview of the global incidence of acute pancreatitis over the last 56 years and demonstrates a steadily rising incidence over time in most countries of the Western world. Bovine adrenal medulla docosapeptide (BAM-22P) collects in plasma in two forms of cholestatic liver damage. Adrenalectomy blocked the elevation of plasma BAM-22P levels. Adrenal steady-state levels of proenkephalin mRNA were also enhanced, but were not similar to BAM-22P peptide level changes. Innervated and denervated adrenal glands from cholestatic rats also express proenkephalin mRNA, indicating that the increase is not due to splanchnic nerve activation. An increase in the total circulating opioid activity accompanies the enhancement in plasma BAM-22P levels.

Abstract

Observations of the nucleus of NGC 4151 at 2.2 microns using the two 10-meter Keck telescopes as an interferometer show a marginally resolved source less than or equal to 0.1 pc in diameter. These observations are the first measurement of an extragalactic source with an optical/IR interferometer. These observations represent a ten-fold improvement in angular resolution when compared to previous near-infrared measurements of AGN and make it possible to test the subparsecscale, near-infrared emission models of NGC 4151.

Abstract

A mechanical amplifier has been devised to multiply the stroke of a piezoelectric transducer (PZT) intended for use at liquid helium temperatures. Interferometry holds the key to high angular resolution imaging and astrometry in space. Future space missions that will detect planets around other solar systems and perform detailed studies of the evolution of stars and galaxies will use new interferometers that observe at mid- and far-infrared wavelengths. Phase-measurement interferometry is key to many aspects of astronomical interferometry, and PZTs are ideal modulators for most methods of phase measurement, but primarily at visible wavelengths. At far infrared wavelengths of 150 to 300 m, background noise is a severe problem and all optics must be cooled to about 4 K. Under these conditions, piezos are ill-suited as modulators, because their throw is reduced by as much as a factor of 2, and even a wavelength or two of modulation is beyond their capability. The largest commercially available piezo stacks are about 5 in. (12.7 cm) long and have a throw of about 180 m at room temperature and only 90 m at 4 K. It would seem difficult or impossible to use PZTs for phase measurements in the far infrared were it not for the new mechanical amplifier that was designed and built.

The Kepler exoplanet survey has revealed that most planets in our interstellar neighborhood are larger than Earth and smaller than Neptune. Abstract

We are now on a clear trajectory for improvements in exoplanet observations that will revolutionize our ability to characterize their atmospheric structure, composition, and circulation, from gas giants to rocky planets. However, exoplanet atmospheric models capable of interpreting the upcoming observations are often limited by insufficiencies in the laboratory and theoretical data that serve as critical inputs to atmospheric physical and chemical tools. Here we provide an up-to-date and condensed description of areas where laboratory and/or ab initio investigations could fill critical gaps in our ability to model exoplanet atmospheric opacities, clouds, and chemistry, building off a larger 2016 white paper, and endorsed by the NAS Exoplanet Science Strategy report. Now is the ideal time for progress in these areas, but this progress requires better access to, understanding of, and training in the production of spectroscopic data as well as a better insight into chemical reaction kinetics both thermal and radiation-induced at a broad range of temperatures. Abstract

Thousands of exoplanets have now been discovered with a huge range of masses, sizes and orbits: from rocky Earth-like planets to large gas giants grazing the surface of their host star. However, the essential nature of these exoplanets remains largely mysterious: there is no known, discernible pattern linking the presence, size, or orbital parameters of a planet to the nature of its parent star. We have little idea whether the chemistry of a planet is linked to its formation environment, or whether the type of host star drives the physics and chemistry of the planet’s birth, and evolution. The Atmospheric Remote-sensing Infrared Exoplanet Large-survey (ARIEL) has been selected by the European Space Agency as the next mediumclass science mission, M4, to address these scientific questions. ARIEL was conceived to observe a large number (~1000) of transiting planets for statistical understanding, including gas giants, Neptunes, super-Earths and Earth-size planets around a range of host star types using transit spectroscopy in the 1.25-7.8 μm spectral range and multiple narrow-band photometry in the optical. ARIEL will focus on warm and hot planets to take advantage of their well-mixed atmospheres which should show minimal condensation and sequestration of high-Z materials compared to their colder Solar System siblings. Said warm and hot atmospheres are expected to be more representative of the planetary bulk composition. Observations of these warm/hot exoplanets, and in particular of their elemental composition (especially C, O, N, S, Si), will allow the understanding of the early stages of planetary and atmospheric formation during the nebular phase and the following few million years. ARIEL will thus provide a representative picture of the chemical nature of the exoplanets and relate this directly to the type and chemical environment of the host star. ARIEL is designed as a dedicated survey mission for combined-light spectroscopy, capable of observing a large and well-defined planet sample within its 4-year mission lifetime. Transit, eclipse and phase-curve spectroscopy methods, whereby the signal from the star and planet are differentiated using knowledge of the planetary ephemerides, allow us to measure atmospheric signals from the planet at levels of 10-100 part per million (ppm) relative to the star and, given the bright nature of targets, also allows more sophisticated techniques, such as eclipse mapping, to give a deeper insight into the nature of the atmosphere. These types of observations require a stable payload and satellite platform with broad, instantaneous wavelength coverage to detect many molecular species, probe the thermal structure, identify clouds and monitor the stellar activity. The wavelength range proposed covers all the expected major atmospheric gases from e.g. H2O, CO2, CH4 NH3, HCN, H2S through to the more exotic metallic compounds, such as TiO, VO, and condensed species. Simulations of ARIEL performance in conducting exoplanet surveys have been performed – using conservative estimates of mission performance and a full model of all significant noise sources in the measurement – using a list of potential ARIEL targets that incorporates the latest available exoplanet statistics. The conclusion at the end of the Phase A study, is that ARIEL – in line with the stated mission objectives – will be able to observe about 1000 exoplanets depending on the details of the adopted survey strategy, thus confirming the feasibility of the main science objectives.
