The synthesis of a sponge-like carbon aerogel from microfibril cellulose, with high porosity (99 %), ultra-low density (0.01 g/cm3), hydrophobic properties (149° static contact angle) and reusability is reported in this paper. The physical properties, internal morphology, thermal properties, and chemical properties of carbon aerogels heat-treated at 700 and 900 °C (Samples C-700 and C-900) were examined. Stabilization and carbonization parameters were optimized in terms of residual carbon yield. The BET surface area of Sample C-700 (521 m2/g) was significantly higher than of Sample C-950 (145 m2/g). Graphitic-like domains were observed in C-950. The highest normalized sorption capacity (86 g/g) for paraffin oil was observed in sample C-700. The removal of hydrophilic function groups during carbonization causes carbon aerogel to present highly hydrophobic properties. Carbon aerogel’s ability to absorb oil is enhanced by its highly porous 3D network structure with interconnected cellulose nanofibrils.

Small angle neutron scattering (SANS), scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and gas adsorption, were applied to study the morphology and hydrogen adsorption properties of a wood-based ultramicroporous carbon (UMC) and a poly(furfuryl alcohol) derived carbon (PFAC). The polydispersed spherical model and the Guinier analysis of the scattering profiles were applied to obtain morphological parameters such as average pore size and pore size distribution of the two carbons; the results agreed reasonably well with independent gas sorption measurements and structural analysis by electron microscopy. The density of hydrogen physisorbed in these two carbons at room temperature and at moderate pressures was investigated by in situ SANS measurements. The experimental data, analyzed using a modified Kalliat model for decoupling scattering contributions from pores of different sizes, indicate that the molecular hydrogen acquires high densities preferentially in pores of subnanometer size at all measured pressures. These results support existing quantum mechanical and thermodynamical models that have predicted that the narrowest pores enhance the adsorption due to the overlapping of the potential fields from both wall sides in the slit-like pores. The structural information at a nanometer level gained via this work could guide the new development of porous-carbon based materials for hydrogen storage.

Structure-property relationships in bulk materials can be important in establishing sensing methods to assess the state of material microstructure. This is particularly true for nuclear graphites since these materials can display anisotropy and can become oxidized under service conditions. Both anisotropy and oxidation-induced porosity can influence structural integrity and this must be confirmed during the lifetime of the material. In this work, laser ultrasonic methods were used to measure the elastic response of various graphite grades with a focus on NBG-18, NBG-25 and IG-110. Results of laser ultrasonic measurements in oxidized graphites show that the moduli decrease with increasing porosity. This variation can be interpreted successfully using effective medium models if the characteristics of graphite porosity are taken into account. Results of laser ultrasonic shear wave birefringence measurements can be used to assess elastic anisotropy. This anisotropy can be expressed in terms of the orientation distribution coefficients W 400 and W 200 . Interpretation of results requires the use of appropriate property-averaging schemes.

A method for selective and comprehensive enrichment of N-linked glycopeptides was developed to facilitate detection of micro-heterogeneity of N-glycosylation. The method takes advantage of the inherent properties of Fbs1, which functions within the ubiquitin-mediated degradation system to recognize the common core pentasaccharide motif (Man3GlcNAc2) of N-linked glycoproteins. We show that Fbs1 is able to bind diverse types of N-linked glycomolecules; however, wild-type Fbs1 preferentially binds high-mannose-containing glycans. We identified Fbs1 variants through mutagenesis and plasmid display selection, which possess higher affinity and improved recovery of complex N-glycomolecules. In particular, we demonstrate that the Fbs1 GYR variant may be employed for substantially unbiased enrichment of N-linked glycopeptides from human serum. Most importantly, this highly efficient N-glycopeptide enrichment method enables the simultaneous determination of N-glycan composition and N-glycosites with a deeper coverage (compared to lectin enrichment) and improves large-scale N-glycoproteomics studies due to greatly reduced sample complexity., Protein glycosylation is an essential post-translational modification which analysis is complicated by the diversity of glycan composition and heterogeneity at individual attachment sites. Here the authors describe a method to selectively enrich N-linked glycopeptides to facilitate the detection of micro-heterogeneity in N-glycosylation.

Matrix graphite (MG) with incompletely graphitized binder used in high-temperature gas-cooled reactors (HTGRs) is commonly suspected to exhibit lower oxidation resistance in air. In order to reveal the oxidation performance, the oxidation behavior of newly developed A3-3 MG at the temperature range from 500 to 950°C in air was studied and the effect of oxidation on the compressive strength of oxidized MG specimens was characterized. Results show that temperature has a significant influence on the oxidation behavior of MG. The transition temperature between Regimes I and II is ~700°C and the activation energy (Ea) in Regime I is around 185 kJ/mol, a little lower than that of nuclear graphite, which indicates MG is more vulnerable to oxidation. Oxidation at 550°C causes more damage to compressive strength of MG than oxidation at 900°C. Comparing with the strength of pristine MG specimens, the rate of compressive strength loss is 77.3% after oxidation at 550°C and only 12.5% for oxidation at 900°C. Microstructure images of SEM and porosity measurement by Mercury Porosimetry indicate that the significant compressive strength loss of MG oxidized at 550°C may be attributed to both the uniform pore formation throughout the bulk and the preferential oxidation of the binder.

The advantages of activated carbon fibers (ACF) over granular activated carbon (GAC) are reviewed and their relationship to ACF structure and texture are discussed. These advantages make ACF very attractive for gas storage applications. Both adsorbed natural gas (ANG) and hydrogen gas adsorption performance are discussed. The predicted and actual structure and performance of lignin-derived ACF are reviewed. The manufacture and performance of ACF derived monolith for potential automotive natural gas (NG) storage applications are reported. Future trends for ACF for gas storage are considered to be positive. The recent improvements in NG extraction coupled with the widespread availability of NG wells means a relatively inexpensive and abundant NG supply in the foreseeable future. This has rekindled interest in NG-powered vehicles. The advantages and benefit of ANG compared to compressed NG offer the promise of accelerated use of ANG as a commuter vehicle fuel. It is to be hoped the current cost hurdle of ACF can be overcome opening ANG applications that take advantage of the favorable properties of ACF versus GAC. Lastly, suggestions are made regarding the direction of future work.

Accelerated oxidation tests were performed to determine kinetic parameters of the chronic oxidation reaction (i.e. slow, continuous, and persistent) of PCEA graphite in contact with helium coolant containing low moisture concentrations in high temperature gas-cooled reactors. To the authors’ knowledge such a study has not been done since the detailed analysis of reaction of H-451 graphite with steam (Velasquez, Hightower, Burnette, 1978). Since that H-451 graphite is now unavailable, it is urgently needed to characterize chronic oxidation behavior of new graphite grades that are being considered for use in gas-cooled reactors. The Langmuir–Hinshelwood mechanism of carbon oxidation by water results in a non-linear reaction rate expression, with at least six different parameters. They were determined in accelerated oxidation experiments that covered a large range of temperatures (800–1100 °C), and partial pressures of water (15–850 Pa) and hydrogen (30–150 Pa) and used graphite specimens thin enough (4 mm) in order to avoid diffusion effects. Data analysis employed a statistical method based on multiple likelihood estimation of parameters and simultaneous fitting of non-linear equations. The results show significant material-specific differences between graphite grades PCEA and H-451 which were attributed to microstructural dissimilarity between the two materials. It is concluded that kinetic data cannot be transferred from one graphite grade to another.

Natural graphite powders were subjected to a series of thermal treatments to improve the anode irreversible capacity loss and capacity retention during long-term cycling of lithium-ion batteries. A baseline thermal treatment in inert Ar or N2 atmosphere was compared to cases with a proprietary additive to the furnace gas. This additive substantially altered the surface chemistry of the uncoated natural graphite powders and resulted in significantly improved long-term cycling performance of the lithium ion batteries over the commercial, carbon-coated natural graphite baseline. Different heat-treatment temperatures were investigated ranging from 950 to 2900 °C to achieve the desired long-term cycling performance with a significantly reduced thermal budget. A detailed summary of the characterization data is also presented, which includes X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and temperature-programmed desorption-mass spectroscopy. Characterization data was correlated to the observed capacity fade improvements over the course of long-term cycling at high charge–discharge rates in full lithium-ion cells. It is believed that the long-term performance improvements are a result of forming a more stable solid electrolyte interface (SEI) layer on the anode graphite surfaces, which is directly related to the surface chemistry modifications imparted by the proprietary gas environment during thermal treatment.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the human impact, in terms of organic matter distribution and chlorophyll found in representative lakes from Bucharest city. The water quality of these lakes was evaluated using fluorescence spectroscopy together with conductivity and pH. Fluorescence data, in the form tryptophan/humic acid ratio, was used to evaluate the humification degree and to evidence the level of microbial contaminations of water lakes. Graphical representation of fluorescence ratio, Chl-a intensity, conductivity and pH was used to divide the analyzed samples in two groups. A quality score of 0 or 1 was introduced to delimitate between good or poor water quality using threshold values. The use of quality scores was helpful in realisation of a water quality map with Bucharest’s lakes, indicating the limnological systems’ ecological state. The results showed that the analysis of chromophoric organic matter can be useful in identifying the negative human influence on urban lakes.

A series of gasification experiments, using two right cylinder specimens (� 12.7 � 25.4 mm and 25.4 � 25.4 mm) of PCEA nuclear graphite in ambient airflow, measured the total gasification flux at weight losses up to 41.5% and temperatures (893–1015 K) characteristics of those for in-pores gasification Mode (a) and in-pores diffusion-limited Mode (b). The chemical kinetics parameters for the gasification of PCEA graphite are determined using a multi-parameters optimization algorithm from the measurements of the total gasification rate and transient weight loss in experiments. These parameters are: (i) the pre-exponential rate coefficients and the Gaussian distributions and values of specific activation energies for adsorption of oxygen and desorption of CO gas; (ii) the specific activation energy and pre-exponential rate coefficient for the breakup of stable un-dissociated C(O2) oxygen radicals to form stable (CO) complexes; (iii) the specific activation energy and pre-exponential coefficient for desorption of CO2 gas and; (iv) the initial surface area of reactive free sites per unit mass. This area is consistently 13.5% higher than that for nuclear graphite grades of NBG-25 and IG-110 and decreases inversely proportional with the square root of the initial mass of the graphite specimens in the experiments. Experimental measurements successfully validate the chemical-reactions kinetics model that calculates continuous Arrhenius curves of the total gasification flux and the production rates of CO and CO2 gases. The model results at different total weight losses agree well with measurements and expand beyond the temperatures in the experiments to the diffusion-limited mode of gasification. Also calculated are the production rates of CO and CO2 gases and their relative contributions to the total gasification rate in the experiments as functions of temperature, for total weight losses of 5% and 10%. Further characterization of essential systems in the parasitic filarial nematodeBrugia malayiis needed to better understand its biology, its interaction with its hosts, and to identify critical components that can be exploited to develop novel treatments. The production of glycophosphatidylinositol-anchored proteins (GPI-APs) is essential in humans, yeast, and the nematodeCaenorhabditis elegans. In addition, GPI-APs perform many important roles for cells. In this study, we characterized theB. malayiGPI-anchored proteome using both computational and experimental approaches. We used bioinformatic strategies to show the presence or absence ofB. malayiGPI-AP biosynthetic pathway genes and to compile a putativeB. malayiGPI-AP proteome using available prediction programs. We verified thesein silicoanalyses using proteomics to identify GPI-AP candidates prepared from the surface of intact worms and from membrane enriched extracts. Our study represents the first description of the GPI-anchored proteome inB. malayiand lays the groundwork for further exploration of this essential protein modification as a target for novel anthelmintic therapeutic strategies.

CERNBox is the CERN cloud storage hub. It allows synchronizing and sharing files on all major desktop and mobile platforms (Linux, Windows, MacOSX, Android, iOS) aiming to provide universal access and offline availability to any data stored in the CERN EOS infrastructure. With more than 16000 users registered in the system, CERNBox has responded to the high demand in our diverse community to an easily and accessible cloud storage solution that also provides integration with other CERN services for big science: visualization tools, interactive data analysis and real-time collaborative editing. Collaborative authoring of documents is now becoming standard practice with public cloud services, and within CERNBox we are looking into several options: from the collaborative editing of shared office documents with different solutions (Microsoft, OnlyOffice, Collabora) to integrating mark-down as well as LaTeX editors, to exploring the evolution of Jupyter Notebooks towards collaborative editing, where the latter leverages on the existing SWAN Physics analysis service. We report on our experience managing this technology and applicable use-cases, also in a broader scientific and research context and its future evolution with highlights on the current development status and future road map. In particular we will highlight the future move to an architecture based on micro services to easily adapt and evolve the service to the technology and usage evolution, notably to unify CERN home directory services.
