LUCIS, a demonstration project co-financed by the Innovation Agency in Portugal (AdI), was carried out in the framework of the DEMTEC Programme (Incentives to Technologically Innovative Pilot Systems). Its main goals were: Validate the reliability of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) when used in practical situations and the competitive advantages that these solutions can represent compared to conventional solutions; Evaluate impacts associated with the use of hydrogen and the benefits to business competitiveness. This project allowed a learning experience in real applications of low power PEMFC. Demonstrations were grouped in two large categories that covered several applications of PEMFC. The prototypes used were produced by SRE (Portugal) and were specifically designed to be used in small power applications, portable, traction or stationary. In this work, the technological validation was carried out for different stacks with power from 10 to 100W. Hydrogen was supplied by compressed gas bottles and metallic hydrides. All the fuel cells were previously characterized in specialized laboratories. Recommendations were drawn for every application in order to improve fuel cell lifetime and operating strategies.

This Thesis aims to understand the process of the universality of the rural social security system, started with the creation of the special, non-contributive regime, as a social-historic product of the social rights implementation in the rural world. To accomplish this, process were analyzed, as well as the tightness and disputes surrounding the constitution of the social rights in the rural area, mainly related to the contributors. It were examined registries of the happenings in the documentation sources, having in mind that it would not be possible to understand the rights provided on the legislation without the exam of the social struggle for its inscription and effectiveness. Those are made especially between the social agents, institutionalized or not, and the State. To make this research there were defined two methodological procedures, as follow: I) revision of the bibliography available about the thematic, with the aim to determine ways or theoretical approaches that will base the elucidation and dialogs, as well as to set the structure of the field of the theoretical dialog of the Thesis; II) the exam of the historic registries that could express the discussion occurred from 1950 and 1980, identifying the main agents and establishing the relationships between them, related to disputes, continuation and changes in the propositions, as well as the kind of social security drawn along this process. The study is structured in five chapters. The approach is based in the assumption that the social security must be understood as a part of the broad process of building rights in rural areas, that encompasses political disputes between work unions and employer s organizations, that modifies the results of the social security design and its organizational dynamic. The rights are discussed on the first chapter as results of long, tenses and continuous disputes for conceptions and ways of implementation, what implies in selections of agents and demands. On the second chapter are analyzed the dynamics of social protection not regulated by the Rural Worker s Statute. The aim is to understand the scenery and experiences over which are based the demands for social rights in rural areas. It s also an aim of the second chapter the observation of the requisition of implementation for what is covered on the Sugar cane Statute and the process of institution of the Rural Social Service. On the third chapter it is analyzed the flow of law projects that will be the embryo of the legislation promulgate under the title of Rural Worker s Statute. And also, it s discussed the role of the FUNRURAL between 1963 and 1971, what means, during the time that encompasses its creation and regulation. The fourth chapter is related to the discussion of the regulation and implementation of the social security, through the complementary law that creates the PRORURAL. At the end, the fifth chapter discusses the implementation of the special security regimen from the constitutional definition in 1988. The work is finished with considerations about the social process of the constitution of the rural social security and the meaning of its innovative design.

This work proposes an alternate solution for two environmental challenges: COVID-19 face masks and coastal sargassum waste. Co-pyrolysis is used to convert both wastes into valuable biochar. Ground face masks and Sargassum spp. biomass were mixed in weight ratios of 1:2 and 1:3. Pyrolysis results indicated that high biomass ratios had a positive effect on biochar production. Activation and co-pyrolysis were performed using CUB-SP, KOH, and water, followed by hydrothermal treatment with N 2 H 4. Physicochemical characterization of metal-free electrocatalysts was conducted using various techniques. The COC-ADO catalyst displayed promising performance, with an onset potential of 0.85 V, a half-wave potential of 0.65 V for ORR, and a current density of 1.96 mA cm−2 at 0.2 V vs RHE, equivalent to 35% of the Pt–C electrocatalyst yield. These findings contribute to understanding the appropriate levels of face masks in sargassum waste management for the production of biochar suitable for AEMFC applications. [Display omitted] • The co-pyrolysis of face masks and biomass is a viable option for obtaining biochar. • The doped biochar has a promising potential for energy conversion. • It was developed a promising, sustainable and efficient electrocatalyst for the ORR. • Chemical surface composition shows nitrogen species in these electrocatalysts. Purpose: To evaluate the urodynamic characteristics of a series of women with stress urinary incontinence presenting various rates of vaginal prolapse. Methods: 92 female patients were included in this study, mean age was 48 years (range 29-75). All patients underwent urogynecologic physical examination (vaginal prolapse was graded) and complete urodynamic study in order to detect the presence of detrusor overactivity. Urodynamic terminology and measurements comply with the ICS (International Continence Society) standards. Statistical significance was established below 0.05. Results: 65 women (70.6%) presented anterior vaginal prolapse and 31 (33.6%) posterior vaginal prolapse. Involuntary contractions of the detrusor muscle appeared in 13 patients (20%) who had an anterior vaginal prolapse and 6 women (19.3%) who had a posterior vaginal prolapse. The existence of involuntary contractions was not associated with the diagnosis of vaginal prolapse. Conclusion: Our study did not show any correlation between existence of vaginal prolapse and detrusor overactivity.

Background/purpose Human skin anisotropy is difficult to quantify. The Cutiscan
® , is allegedly, the first biometrical system to provide information on the elastic and viscoelastic properties, as well as on anisotropy and directionality of the human skin in vivo. Thus, this study aims to contribute to characterize this new device and its applicability, and to compare its behavior with two other well-known devices-the Cutometer® and the Reviscometer® . Methods Measurements were conducted with each device in three different anatomical sites (forehead, forearm and leg) of 20 female volunteers engaged after informed consent. The participants in the study were aged 19-73 years (mean age 37 ± 18.7 years old), and were divided in two groups ( n = 10), based on their age - Group I, mean age 22 ± 1.3 years; Group II, mean age 52 ± 13.7 years. Results All devices were useful tools to explore the anatomical and the age dependant changes in biomechanical terms, showing different discriminative capacities. Interesting correlations were established between the variables provided by the equipment. Conclusion The Cutiscan® descriptors delivered excellent relationships with those from Cutometer® and Reviscometer® , while providing more detailed information about skin anisotropy through a full 360° analysis. Elastic liposomes are capable to improve drug transport through the skin by acting as penetration enhancers due to the high fluidity and elasticity of the liposome membranes. Therefore, elastic liposomes were prepared and characterized to facilitate the transdermal transport of bioactive molecules. Liposomes consisted of dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC) as the structural component, with different surfactants derived from lauric acid as elastic components: C12E5(polyoxyethylene-5-lauryl ether), PEG4L (polyethyleneglycol-4-lauryl ester), PEG4DL (polyethylene glycol-4-dilauryl ester), PEG8L (polyethylene glycol-8-lauryl ester) and PEG8DL (polyethylene glycol-8-dilauryl ester). The elastic liposomes were characterized in terms of their phospholipid content, mean diameter, size distribution, elasticity and stability during storage, as well as their ability to incorporate surfactant and permeate through 50 nm pore size membranes. The results showed that the phospholipid phase transition temperature, the fluidity of the lipid bilayer resulting from incorporation of the surfactant and the preservation of particle integrity were factors determining the performance of the elastic liposomes in permeating through nanoporous membranes. The best results were obtained using DMPC combined with the surfactants PEG8L or PEG8DL. The findings demonstrate the potential of using elastic liposomes for transdermal administration of drugs. The Xi^0 muon semi-leptonic decay has been observed for the first time with nine identified events using the KTeV beam line and detector at Fermilab. The decay is normalized to the Xi^0 beta decay mode and yields a value for the ratio of decay rates of $(1.8^{+0.7}_{-0.5}(stat.)\pm0.2(syst.))\times 10^{-2}$. This is in agreement with the SU(3) flavor symmetric quark model., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures; changed authors list, figure added

Streptococcus hemolitico del grupo A y Haemophilus influenzae son patógenos prevalentes Having into account the high frequency of vulvovaginitis in the pediatric and adolescent gynecology setting and the unique aspects of the microbiology and endocrinology of the pre pubertal patient, we present a review of the most relevant aspects in the last 5 years, concerning epidemiology, etiology, diagnosis and treatment of specific bacterial vulvovaginitis in the pre pubertal girl. There's no consensus regarding the normal vaginal microflora, which makes difficult the interpretation of swabs. According to actual evidence we could say that in approaching prepubertal vulvovaginitis we must consider as main etiologic agents: respiratory, enteric and epidermic pathogens; deficient hygiene, foreign bodies, irritants, vulvar dermatologic diseases, anatomical abnormalities and sexual abuse. Group A - hemolytic Streptococcus and Haemophilus influenzae are prevalent pathogens

We present measurements of R_Kl3rad = Gamma(KL->\pi\ell\nu\gamma; Egcm > 10 MeV)/Gamma(KL->\pi\ell\nu), where ell = mu or e, and Egcm is the photon energy in the kaon rest frame. These measurements are based on KL decays collected in 1997 by the KTeV (E832) experiment at Fermilab. With samples of 1385 KL->\pi\mu\nu\gamma and 14221 KL->\pi\e\nu\gamma candidates, we find R_Km3rad = (0.530 +- 0.019)% and R_Ke3rad = (4.942 +- 0.062)%. Ponencia presentada en el VIII Congreso Internacional de Ingeniería de Proyectos celebrada en Bilbao en el año 2004 The goal of the project was to improve the design process of the products in the furniture industry. It consisted of investigating the definition of a knowledge-based model in order to assist in the design of the industrial products. Firstly, a design process analysis and redesign was made through the process modeling. From the current design process model of the studied company a new design process model was achieved. In the new process, changes and consequences of introducing a new design tool, such as Catia V5, were reflected. Improvements referring to times, workflows, reduction of mistakes and better efficiency in the product design were achieved. Then, an Informal Model was built up and developed with the product knowledge of the company. This model was the necessary way between the information that defines the product related with the company and the Formal Model, which is required for its application in computer programs for products design. Finally, through using the program Catia V5, the prototype of a model was built up. That model allowed the achievement of variations in current designs automatically, taking into account the features and limitations of itself. Those automatic designs were gotten by the user, modifying the defined variables by introducing the searched parameters. In that way, a reduction of the time needed for current design and less mistakes of any type were achieved. As a whole, the project achieved a reduction of times and mistakes, increased flexibility referred to changes in the product design and integration between the design tasks, and achieved a best product knowledge management in the company.

To evaluate the safety and feasibility of zidovudine and lamivudine (AZT/3TC) given to HIV infected pregnant women and their infants in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This open label phase II study enrolled 40 HIV infected antiretroviral naive womenor=20 weeks gestation, CD4500 cells x10(6)/l, from two public hospitals.fixed dose AZT 300 mg/3TC 150 mg by mouth every 12 hours until labour; AZT 300 mg by mouth every 3 hours until delivery; infants: AZT 4 mg/kg every 12 hours plus 3TC 2 mg/kg every 12 hours for 6 weeks. Blood haematology and chemistry were monitored; adherence evaluated by pills count; efficacy measured by changes in lymphocyte (CD4) and viral load, and by HIV RNA-PCR tests performed at birth, 6 and 12 weeks, to diagnose infant infection. No women breast fed.mean age 24.48 (SD 3.5) years; gestational age 24.5 (4.5) weeks; AZT/3TC duration 14.4 (4.4) weeks; vaginal delivery: 11/39; caesarean section: 28/39. Entry and pre-labour CD4: 310/486 cells x10(6)/l (p0.001); entry and pre-labour viral load: 53 818/2616 copies/ml (p0.001). Thirty nine women tolerated treatment with80% adherence; one was lost to follow up. Five newborns were excluded from 3TC receipt. All 39 babies were uninfected. Haematological toxicity in newborns was common: anaemia in 27; neutropenia in five (two severe); platelets counts100000 in two. All values recovered on study completion.Fixed dose AZT/3TC is well accepted, gives improvements in CD4 and viral load; no infants were HIV infected. Haematological toxicity in infants needs careful monitoring.

Tensile dynamic mechanical analysis at 1 Hz was used to characterize the solid rheological properties of ß-PVDF films. Both the elastic and loss moduli and the specific damping capacity were monitored against temperature, allowing the study of the effect of anisotropy upon the viscoelastic properties of the films. The temperature range covered the ß- and alpha-relaxations. These results are compared to dielectric relaxation results in order to elucidate the electrical and mechanical contributions to the observed relaxations. Further, an important shrinking effect upon heating above 364 K has been observed, that influences the material properties. This geometrical effect has been monitored by thermal mechanical analysis. The thermal coefficients of linear expansion have been calculated, giving two different regimes for this parameter. The variations at a molecular level have been monitored by FTIR., Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT) - Programa Operacional "Ciência, Tecnologia, Inovação" (POCTI) - POCTI/CTM/33501/99.

- Abstract
The task of expert finding has been getting increasing attention in information retrieval literature. However, the current state-of-the-art is still lacking in principled approaches for combining different sources of evidence. This paper explores the usage of unsupervised rank aggregation methods as a principled approach for combining multiple estimators of expertise, derived from the textual contents, from the graph-structure of the citation patterns for the community of experts, and from profile information about the experts. We specifically experimented two unsupervised rank aggregation approaches well known in the information retrieval literature, namely CombSUM and CombMNZ. Experiments made over a dataset of academic publications for the area of Computer Science attest for the adequacy of these methods.
