Text For any algebraic number γ, let g ( x ) be the unique irreducible polynomial with integral coefficients, whose leading coefficient c ( γ ) is positive, such that g ( γ ) = 0 . Let d ( γ ) be the denominator of γ. We fix a number field K, a prime p, a positive integer k and we study the set of values of v p ( c ( γ ) ) , when γ runs in the set of the primitive elements of K over Q , such that v p ( d ( γ ) ) = k . This set is completely determined for certain splitting types of p. Video For a video summary of this paper, please visit http://youtu.be/EagXNh_d9Xg .

Identifying the performance of a free and moving hydrofoil requires extensive numerical and experimental investigations. This research topic is devoted to the study of hydrofoils used in the maritime domain. The stall of the boundary layer poses a problem of instability of the marine vehicle influencing the hydrodynamic performance, for these circumstances a method to force the attachment of these boundary layers by natural means has been proposed. In this context, a hydrofoil model was studied numerically based on a three-dimensional approach using CFD techniques for three configurations of which the first is smooth, the second with three holes and the third with seven holes from the intrados to the extrados inclined 23 ° relative to the X axis. The numerical result shows an advantageous gain in the lift force and a decrease in the drag force.

International audience; Herein we describe the drug design steps developed to increase the radical scavenging and β-amyloid aggregation inhibitory activities of a previously described series of benzylidenephenylpyrrolizinones. Among the newly synthesized derivatives, some benzylphenylpyrrolizinones exhibited interesting results in regard to those activities. Initial druggability parameters were measured, and suggest these compounds as a suitable starting point for potential alternatives in treating Alzheimer's disease

We previously reported that the cinnamylpiperazinyl group in the side chain of the chenodeoxycholic acid showed apoptosis-inducing activity on multiple myeloma cancer cell line KMS-11. In the present study, we synthesized and tested the pro-apoptotic potency of fifteen new piperazinyl bile carboxamide derived from cholic, ursodeoxycholic, chenodeoxycholic, deoxycholic and lithocholic acids on human colon adenocarcinoma cell lines DLD-1, HCT-116, and HT-29. Cell viability was first measured using XTT assay. The most of the synthetic bile carboxamide derivatives decreased significantly cell viability in a dose-dependent manner. HCT-116 and DLD-1 cell lines were more sensitive than HT-29 to tested compounds. 9c, 9d showed the best in vitro results in term of solubility and dose–response effect on the three colon adenocarcinoma cell lines. Additionally, flow cytometric and Western-blotting analysis showed that 9c induced pro-apoptosis in DLD-1 and HCT-116 whereas 9d did not. We conclude that the benzyl group improved anti-proliferative activity and that the α-hydroxyl group was found to be more beneficial at the 7-position in steroid skeleton.

The diagnostics failures of monitoring the condition of rotation machinery in the industry are considered very significant to ensure the efficiency and safety of production. However, many serious malfunctioning to the machine could easily occur because of these failures, thus, a huge shortage in production. In this domain, In fact, the most important installation faults lead to an increase of temperature in specific areas. In this paper, we describe an experimental device based on an infrared thermography technic, which allows observing thermal phenomena. The three-phase induction motor, used in this work, is mounted on a base plate with an alignment device. During the start-up transients, from standstill to steady state, thermal images of the motor trunk are captured every second by an infrared camera connected to a computer equipped with analysis software. These images are used first of all to build the thermal model other induction motor. Then, the results obtained by the building model are compared with those obtained by the faulty machines, in order to study the applicability of thermographic data for diagnostic purposes. Results show that this method represents a powerful diagnostic tool, which can be used to complete the information provided by techniques based on other quantities, in cases where they are inconclusive.

A polynomial $f$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_{q}$ can be classified as a permutation polynomial by the Hermite–Dickson criterion, which consists of conditions on the powers $f^{e}$ for each $e$ from $1$ to $q-2$ , as well as the existence of a unique solution to $f(x)=0$ in $\mathbb{F}_{q}$. Carlitz and Lutz gave a variant of the criterion. In this paper, we provide an alternate proof to the theorem of Carlitz and Lutz. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

AIMS The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy, risks, safety, and follow-up of radiofrequency (RF) catheter ablation of atrioventricular nodal re-entrant tachycardia (AVRNT) in patients (pts) > or = 75 years old (n=42) (GpI) compared with pts younger than 75 years (n=234) (GpII). METHODS AND RESULTS The study population consisted of 276 consecutive pts (39.5% men/60.5% women), from 15 to 98-year-old (average 56+/-17 years) with AVRNT referred for RF ablation (RFA) from October 1997 to January 2004. Combined anatomical and electrogram approaches were used to guide RFA. The cumulative risk of AVRNT recurrence was analysed by the Kaplan-Meier method and log-rank test. The average follow-up was 34+/-18 months. GpI (80+/-4 years) differed significantly from GpII (51+/-14 years) regarding: heart rate tachycardia (160+/-20 vs. 180+/-30 bpm; P=0.0001), the slow pathway antegrade refractory period (370+/-70 vs. 340+/-60 ms; P=0.01), the fast pathway antegrade refractory period (360+/-60 vs. 330+/-60 ms; P=0.003), retrograde refractory period (360+/-60 vs. 330+/-60 ms; P=0.0007), left ventricular ejection fraction (60+/-12 vs. 65+/-7%; P=0.0009), and ischaemic ECG signs during tachycardia (76.2% vs. 61%; P=0.09). RFA was successfully obtained in 275/276 (99.6%), 42/42 in GpI (100%), and 233/234 (99.6%) in GpII. Five complications occurred (1.8%): major complications in two pts (0.7%) and minor complications in three pts (1.1%). Major complications were deep venous thrombosis with pulmonary embolus (n=1) and pericardial effusion (n=1), minor complications were groin haematoma (n=3). One complication was observed in GpI (groin haematoma) (2.4%) and four in GpII (deep venous thrombosis with pulmonary embolus in one, groin haematoma in two, and pericardial effusion in one) (1.7%). The number of recurrences was not statistically different between the two groups (0 vs. 3.4%; P=0.5) with a respective average follow-up of 28+/-18 and 35+/-18 months, respectively. CONCLUSION Catheter ablation of AVRNT in elderly and very elderly pts appears to be a reasonable approach regarding feasibility and effectiveness without increasing the risk of AV block.

AbstractWe examine the equation for positive integers
y ,a ≥ 2 andk ≥ 3. This equation can be expressed as a problem in terms of the Zeckendorf representations of integers. Using bounds on linear forms in logarithms and Baker-Davenport reduction methods, we are able to completely solve the equation fory ≤ 25000 whenk = 3, fory ≤ 1000 whenk = 4, fory ≤ 40 whenk = 5, and fory ≤ 3 whenk = 6. - Abstract

International audience; Nine new 17-(piperazin-1-yl)pyridin-5-yl)steroids as abiraterone analogues were synthesized. Compounds 5d and 5g showed selective activities against 17α-hydroxylase/C17,20-lyase (CYP17A1) and aromatase (CYP19), respectively. IC50 values of 5d were 5.09 and >50 μm, whereas these values for 5g were >50 μm and 7.40 μm, respectively, for CYP17A1 and CYP19. Molecular modelling highlighted that the inhibitor designed to bind cytochrome P450 haem iron is a necessary condition but not the only rationale to explain inhibitory activity. These abiraterone analogues were then evaluated on hormone-independent prostate cancer cell lines DU-145 and PC-3 and on hormone-dependent breast and prostate cancer cell lines MCF-7 and LNCaP, respectively. Compounds 5e, 5g and 5i have showed potent activities only on hormone-independent prostate cancer cell lines DU-145 and PC-3 with 60–85% inhibition of both cell viability and growth at 10 nm with pro-apoptotic mechanism as illustrated in PC-3 cells by DNA ladder assay and Western blotting of Bax, Casp-3 and its substrate, the poly (ADP–ribose) polymerase. We conclude that hybrid heterocycle steroids could be good lead compounds in the drug design especially against hormone-independent prostate cancer.

Let ${ \mathbb{F} }_{q} $ be the finite field of characteristic $p$ containing $q= {p}^{r} $ elements and $f(x)= a{x}^{n} + {x}^{m} $, a binomial with coefficients in this field. If some conditions on the greatest common divisor of $n- m$ and $q- 1$ are satisfied then this polynomial does not permute the elements of the field. We prove in particular that if $f(x)= a{x}^{n} + {x}^{m} $ permutes ${ \mathbb{F} }_{p} $, where $n\gt m\gt 0$ and $a\in { \mathbb{F} }_{p}^{\ast } $, then $p- 1\leq (d- 1)d$, where $d= \gcd (n- m, p- 1)$, and that this bound of $p$, in terms of $d$ only, is sharp. We show as well how to obtain in certain cases a permutation binomial over a subfield of ${ \mathbb{F} }_{q} $ from a permutation binomial over ${ \mathbb{F} }_{q} $.

The electrical properties of plasma deposited nanocomposite thin films based on graphite-like nanoparticles embedded in a hydrogenated amorphous carbon matrix were studied. In contrast with classical dielectric materials, dielectric losses present a relaxation peak dependent on white light intensity. The latter is attributed to nanoparticles that are responsible for this photo-excited mechanism.

The Photon Array for the studies of Radioactive and Ion Stable beams (PARIS) is a multidetector of clusters. Each cluster is composed of 9 units of two-shells phoswiches of LaBr3/NaI scintillators optically coupled to one photomultiplier tube (PMT). PARIS will be used in combination with the VAMOS spectrometer at GANIL. During the experiment, PMTs will be exposed to the constant magnetic fringe fields produced by a quadrupole. Magnetic shielding is essential to efficiently lower the magnetic field inside the PMTs. ANSYS software allowed to simulate fringe fields produced by the quadrupole and to verify the impact of the shield initially foreseen. Obtained results were used to optimize and improve the geometry of the shield and to select the most efficient materials. They are an original illustration of the performance capability of ANSYS software within the fields of nuclear physics, high energy physics and medical imaging instrumentation.

Our goal is to use thermal imaging to diagnose a particle accelerator used in medicine. This technic can track its operating status and detect breakdowns and failures. The accelerator is used in the Regional Cancer Center in Oujda (CRO) to treat cancerous patients. The CRO plays a crucial role in the medical area of eastern morocco. Hence, to better manage and plan the therapeutic sessions, we have to ensure an upstream apparatus diagnosis. Our work involves the production of a thermal mapping of the accelerator during normal operating and when a failure occurs. The analysis begins with the manual segmentation of thermal images to isolate different significant regions. Afterwards, we will determine the temperature of all interesting present elements in the area. Finally, we will conduct a comparison of accelerator components temperature in the case of normal operating and when is down. Therefore, the analysis of the thermal mapping will help us identify the defective element and prevent any further deterioration.

International audience; This work describes the synthesis and the biological evaluation of novel benzylidenephenylpyrrolizinones as potential antioxidant, metal chelating or amyloid β (βA) aggregation inhibitors. Some derivatives exhibited interesting results in regard to several of the performed evaluations and appear as valuable Multi-Target Directed Ligands with potential therapeutic interest in Alzheimer's disease. Among them, compound 29 particularly appears as a valuable radical and NO scavenger, a Cu(II) and Fe(II) chelating agent and exhibits moderate βA aggregation inhibition properties. These activities, associated to a good predictive bioavailability and a lack of cytotoxicity, design it as a promising hit for further in vivo investigation

Let n ≥ 3 be an integer. For any permutation σ of A = {0, 1, …, n-1}, set [Formula: see text]. It is proved that n is prime if and only if 〈σ, n〉 ≡ 0 (mod n) for any σ. When n is composite, we show that there exist cycles of any length satisfying this congruence. We show as well that the analog statement is true for cycles of length at least 2 not satisfying the congruence.

Text Ruppert proved that there is a constant d 2 such that every imaginary quadratic number field with discriminant D K has a generator α which satisfies H ( α ) ⩽ d 2 | D K | , where H ( α ) is the height of α . The constant d 2 in Ruppertʼs result is non-effective. Ruppert conjectured that one can take d 2 = 3.2 . In the first part of this paper, we give an effective version to Ruppertʼs result and deduce Ruppertʼs conjecture in many cases. Ruppert proved some results about the height of the reduced elements in a real quadratic field. In the second part of this paper, among other results, we establish a best possible constant for a result of Ruppert connecting the heights of reduced elements and generators of quadratic fields. Bacterial contamination of pasteurized milk may originate from different sources: raw milk, process equipment surfaces and packaging materials. It is hypothesized that post-pasteurization contamination along the milk processing lines is responsible of reducing shelf life of Algerian pasteurized milk. This assumption was investigated through assessment of both the microflora of biofilms in milk pipeline systems at five dairy plants of Northwestern Algeria and the effectiveness of a quaternary ammonium based compound used for the disinfection of the plant equipment. Samples were collected before and after cleaning-in-place (CIP) systems from different segments of pasteurization lines with sterile cotton swabs. Quantitative assessment showed little reduction of the total bacteria count after CIP. On the average bacterial numbers were 5.6 × 103, 1.2 × 104, 5.1 × 104, 2.5 × 105 and 9.7 × 107 cfu/cm2, respectively, in the different units. Phenotypic identification of isolates revealed predominance of Gram-positive bacilli belonging to Bacillus and notably the Bacillus cereus group, at maximal levels of 72 and 21% respectively. The other Gram-positive microflora included Staphylococcus (30%) andMicrococcus (10%). In contrast, the incidence of the Gram-negative bacteria was relatively low. Two genera, identified as Pseudomonas (9%) and Enterobacter (6%), were found only in two dairies. Three dairies were Gram-negative bacteria-free. That should be the result of common contamination sources or highly environmental selective pressure. Further studies have to address these hypotheses. Treatment of experimental Bacillus cereus sensu lato strains biofilms with a 50, 100 and 150 ppm of quaternary ammonium disinfectant, showed a significant resistance of biofilms to this product even after long exposure time (15 min). This study emphasized the importance of aerobic spore-forming bacteria in dairy-processing equipment as they are able to built recalcitrant biofilms on the inside equipment surfaces with subsequent resistance to conventional CIP system and potential transfer to pasteurized milk. Therefore, in order to reduce the contamination levels of spore-forming bacteria and improve the quality and shelf life of the product, these dairies have, besides improvement in the hygienic status of the plant equipments, also to monitor either the pasteurization process or the contamination from raw material (that is, milk powder). Key words: Milk contamination, pasteurization, biofilm, cleaning-in-place (CIP).

Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is a multifunctional steroid with a broad range of biological effects in humans and animals. DHEA can be converted to multiple oxygenated metabolites in the brain and peripheral tissues. The mechanisms by which DHEA exerts its effects are not well understood. However, evidence that the effects of DHEA are mediated by its oxygenated metabolites has accumulated. This paper will review the panel of oxygenated DHEA metabolites (7, 16 and 17-hydroxylated derivatives) including a number of 5α-androstane derivatives, such as epiandrosterone (EpiA) metabolites. The most important aspects of the oxidative metabolism of DHEA in the liver, intestine and brain are described. Then, this article reviews the reported biological effects of oxygenated DHEA metabolites from recent findings with a specific focus on cancer, inflammatory and immune processes, osteoporosis, thermogenesis, adipogenesis, the cardiovascular system, the brain and the estrogen and androgen receptors.

Let K be a number field of degree n over ℚ, Â be the set of integers of K that are primitive over ℚ and let I(K) be its index. The prime factors of I(K) are called common factors of indices or inessential discriminant divisors. We show that these primes divide another index i(K) previously defined by Gunji and McQuillan as i(K) = lcm θ∈Âi(θ), where i(θ) = gcd x∈ℤFθ(x) and Fθ(x) is the characteristic polynomial of θ over ℚ. It is shown that there exists θ ∈ Â such that i(K) = i(θ) and an algorithm is given for the computation of such an integer. For any prime p|i(K), an integer ρK(p) defined as the number of [Formula: see text] such that p|i(θ) is investigated. It is shown that this integer determines in some cases the splitting type of p in K. Some open questions related to I(K), i(K) and ρK(p) are stated.

Amorphous hydrogenated carbon (a-C:H) films have been deposited in Microwave Multipolar plasma reactor (MMP) using pure acetylene as precursor with controlling substrate temperature. Investigations on the optical properties of deposited films according to the substrate temperature have been reported. It has been observed that the optical band gap decreases and the Csp2 concentration increases when cooling down the substrate temperature. On the other hand, it has been revealed elsewhere that cooling down the substrate temperature during the deposition process, leads to the increase of particles trapped density in the deposited films due to a phenomenon of thermophoresis. Therefore, the optical properties evolution is linked to the increases of particles trapped density in the deposited films.

This work deals the application of the artificial immune system to discriminate between healthy and people with Parkinson’s disease (PWP). As the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease (PD) occur gradually and mostly targeting the elderly people for whom physical visits to the clinic are inconvenient and costly, telemonitoring of the disease using measurements of dysphonia (vocal features) has a vital role in its early diagnosis. Taking inspiration from natural immune systems, we try to grab useful properties such as automatic recognition, memorization and adaptation. The developed algorithms have as a base the algorithm of training bio inspired CLONCLAS. The results obtained are satisfactory and show a great reliability of the approach.

Some investigations on physico-chemical properties of hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H) thin films deposited from C2H4 precursor have been carried out. The films were elaborated in a Microwave Multipolar Plasma reactor excited at Distributed Electron Cyclotron Resonance (MMP-DECR). The effects of the plasma power on the electrical and structural characteristics of the deposited films have been evaluated. It appeared that for low plasma power ( 400 W), the deposition rate and the hydrogen concentration increases, whereas the Csp2 concentration remains constant. Beyond 400 W, the deposition rate and the hydrogen concentration reach saturation levels and the Csp2 concentration decreases. In contrast, the film density decreased with the increase of the plasma power. Below 400 W, the dielectric constant decreased with the increase of the plasma power, however, beyond 400 W its value remained almost constant. The correlation between film characterization and properties shows that the permittivity is driven by the film density and the film structure.
