A learning disability index (LDI) for the assessment of intellectual deficits on the K-ABC is described. The population parameters of this index allows for assessment of the abnormality of the LDI in the individual case, as well as for evaluation of statistical significance of any change in the LDI from test to retest. Fifty-five dyslexic and 30 normal readers (8-12 years old) were administered the K-ABC. Normal readers demonstrated significantly higher scores on the cognitive subtests of "Hand Movements,""Number Recall, Word Order," and "Matrix Analogies" as well as on each achievement subtest, the "Sequential" and "Achievement" factors, and the "Mental Processing" composite. Examined performance of matched pairs of black and white fourth- and fifth-grade males and females on Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised (WISC-R) and Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children (K-ABC). Findings suggest black children will likely earn similar WISC-R and K-ABC mean scores. The conclusion that K-ABC reduces difference between black and white levels of intelligence was not supported. Learning Disabled children (N=198) were tested on both the WISC-R (Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised) and K-ABC (Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children). Joint factor analysis produced three-factor and four-factor solutions. Factors corresponding to three K-ABC scales generally converged with three WISC-R factors. (Author/CL)

The study examined correlations between the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised (WISC-R), the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test-Revised (PPVT-R), and the Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children (K-ABC) for 44 learning disabled primary and intermediate special class students. Gifted elementary students (N=54) completed the Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children. Factor structures for mental processing and achievement subtests were compared to factor structures for children from the standardization sample, revealing similar structures. The most parsimonious structure, however, accounted for under 40 percent of shared test variance. (NRB)

Evaluated interscorer reliability of the Spatial Memory subtest, which appears on the Simultaneous Processing scale of the Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children. Responses from 19 gifted children were scored by two independent examiners. Results showed this subtest may be prone to scoring errors because no permanent record of responses exists. (NRB)

Convergent and discriminant validity of the Mental Processing Scales of the Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children (K-ABC) were examined using 51 first-grade children. Investigated the criterion-related validity of the Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children (K-ABC), predicting reading comprehension, arithmetic, and general achievement, for large samples of blacks and whites tested during the standardization of the battery. Test-retest stability of the Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children (K-ABC) was investigated over a 5 1/2-month interval for 42 Mexican-American preschool/kindergarten children. Results indicated stability coefficients for K-ABC Global scales and subtests were generally of adequate magnitudes providing some evidence that the K-ABC is a relatively stable instrument for the sample. Results of the Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children (K-ABC) and Bender-Gestalt Test were compared for a sample of learning disabled children that included 24 blacks and 24 whites; mean age 9 years. A significant correlation coefficient was found between the K-ABC Simultaneous Scale and the Bender-Gestalt Test error score. Implications of these findings are discussed. (Author/ABB)

Compared Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children (K-ABC) with Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised (WISC-R) and Peabody Individual Achievement Test (PIAT) to determine K-ABC's utility in determination of a severe discrepancy for learning disabilities classification. The Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children and Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence (WPPSI) were administered to Anglo- and Mexican-American children aged four to six. Both scales measured similar, but not identical, intellectual and achievement factors, indicating concurrent validity. Anglo children scored higher on WPPSI verbal IQ. (Author/GDC)

The study found that the Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children (K-ABC) was valid in predicting reading, mathematics, and written expression for Black, Hispanic, and White male students referred for special education services. Performed confirmatory factor analyses of Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children (K-ABC) using subtest correlations for standardization samples provided in manuals to test hypothesis that factors underlying K-ABC are substantially intercorrelated at all age levels for two- and three-factor models. Examined the concurrent validity of the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test-Revised (PPVT-R) and the Kaufman Assessment Battery for Childen (K-ABC) with 47 students referred for learning difficulties. Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children scores obtained by 20 Down's syndrome children (ages 8-12) were compared with scores of 20 younger siblings and 20 nonretarded children matched for mental age. Over 9 months the stability coefficients for the global scales ranged from .78 to .88, and for the subtests from .65 to .79. Thirty French-speaking Quebec preschoolers were administered translated versions of the Developmental Indicators for the Assessment of Learning-Revised (DIAL-R) and the Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children (K-ABC).
