Background and Aim: The creation of objective methods for the evaluation and improvement of quantitative and qualitative indicators of meat productivity in farm animals should be based on a comprehensive analysis of the genetic, physiological, and biochemical parameters of the animal. This study aimed to investigate the effects of growth hormone (GH) and thyroglobulin (TG5) gene polymorphisms on the hormonal status, slaughter traits, and chemical, amino acid, and fatty acid composition of meat in Hereford bulls. Materials and Methods: Hereford bulls (n = 9) were reared under the same feeding and housing conditions until the age of 21 months, after which they were slaughtered. Polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism was performed for genotyping GH L127V and TG5 C422T polymorphisms. The experimental animals were evaluated to determine slaughter traits (including pre-slaughter weight, carcass, and internal fat weight and yield), chemical, fatty acid, and amino acid composition of ground beef, and hormonal status using serum concentrations of GH, triiodothyronine, and thyroxine. Results: Animals with the valine homozygous (VV) genotype of GH had the maximum serum GH level of 9.33 mIU/mL (p = 0.10) higher than leucine homozygous (LL) genotype carriers. Individuals with the LL genotype outperformed V-allele carriers in serum thyroxine (T4) concentration by 21.3-30.5 nmol/L (16.15%-24.86%; p < 0.01-0.05). Genetic differentiation induced by TG5 C422T polymorphism was determined to a lesser extent by the hormonal status of the Hereford animals. The V-allele was associated with increased carcass weight, with VV homozygotes significantly outperforming LL individuals by 45.0 kg (13.61%; p < 0.05). The T allele at the TG5 gene polymorphism was associated with more intense lipogenesis and less protein synthesis in muscle tissue and these effects were enhanced in the homozygous state. Young animals with the TT variant of the TG5 gene exhibited a significantly superior polyunsaturated fatty acid/saturated fatty acid ratio of 0.012 units (p < 0.01). Carriers of the LL genotype were characterized by minimum amino acid content in muscle tissue. Heterozygous bulls exceeded LL homozygotes in the sum of essential amino acids by 3.09% (p = 0.10) and non-essential amino acids by 1.9% (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The development of breeding programs for the Hereford breed should be carried out considering genetic features that determine the formation of economic traits in animals. Analysis of polymorphisms in the TG5 gene is a promising method for the early diagnosis of the fatty acid composition of beef. Identification of polymorphisms in the GH gene allows the prediction of higher productivity potential and amino acid composition of meat. The different effects of the GH and TG5 genes on the development of various economic traits allowed us to determine further vectors for scientific research on their complex associations in Hereford cattle, which will be useful for planning effective breeding schemes. Progesterone is an endogenous steroid hormone involved in the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and embryogenesis of humans and other species. Progesterone crystallization techniques have previously reported. Among these techniques, solvent crystallization and different solvent:anti‐solvent systems are considered. Herein, the selective development of either hollow‐like or condensed progesterone microcrystals in elevated yield with controlled polymorphism, habit, and release is described for the first time. For the hollow microcrystals, isopropyl alcohol (IPA) and double‐deionized water (DDW) system is developed as solvent:anti‐solvent, while acetonitrile (AcN) and DDW system are developed for the condensed microcrystals. The microcrystals obtained from both developed crystallization systems are thoroughly investigated with varied microscopic techniques, including brightfield and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermal analysis by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and crystallography by powder X‐ray diffraction (PXRD) and single XRD, and have been compared. Results show that the crystals of the IPA:DDW crystallization system are hollow and exhibit several habits, whereas the microcrystals of the AcN:DDW crystallization system are more condensed. However, both systems are found to have a wide crystal size distribution of one stable polymorph and are thus highly useful for tunable release. More importantly, these microcrystals exhibit elongated and slow release for 14 days under an expedited release conditions model, indicating suitability for long‐term and potential localized release applications. Various reviews and meta‐analyses have shown the positive effects of mindfulness‐based interventions (MBIs) on the mental health of cancer patients and survivors. Some studies have also investigated the impact of MBIs on physiological markers of health in oncology, but a systematic review has not been conducted in this field. The current paper aims to fill this gap in the literature. Following preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta‐analyses 2020 guidelines, data were obtained from the databases of Pubmed, Scopus, Web of Science in May 2022. Twenty‐five studies were included. Globally, 35 biomarkers were employed in these studies and were categorized 8 groups (cortisol; blood pressure (BP), heart rate, and respiratory rate; C‐reactive protein; telomere length and telomerase activity (TA); genetic signature; cytokines and hormones; leucocyte activation; leucocyte count and cell subpopulation analysis). In seven of these categories of biomarkers, positive effects of MBIs were observed. The most promising results were obtained for cortisol, BP, TA and pro‐inflammatory gene expression. However, the generally low number of studies per single biomarker limits the possibility to draw reliable conclusions. The present review presents a comprehensive state‐of‐the‐art for MBIs in oncology on biomarkers, confirming MBIs' potential for improving physiological health in cancer patients and survivors besides those already shown in literature on psychological well‐being. Ignorance is produced through mechanisms related to power relations and socio-cultural context. This article examines whether the theoretical conceptualisation of agnotology may be useful when exploring intersex and the way it has been erased socially and physically. Specifically, based on the work of a PhD in Sociology and History of Science, it proposes categorising three types of mechanisms of ignorance production—cultural, epistemological and physical—with the aim of providing a greater understanding of how medicine, science and technology participate in a continuous process of erasing intersex bodies and lived experiences. Using medical literature, interviews and observations, the article focuses on a specific area of biomedical knowledge and intervention: the prenatal 'treatment' of Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH) with dexamethasone or 'prenatal DEX'. It shows how this procedure was pioneered by French doctors and how it continues to be practised in France despite numerous uncertainties and controversies inside and outside of the medical sphere. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) and defence hormones like salicylic acid (SA) and jasmonic acid (JA) play pivotal roles in triggering cell death. However, the precise mechanism governing the interaction between ROS and SA/JA remains elusive. Recently, our research revealed that RNAi mutants with suppressed expression of PROGRAMMED CELL DEATH8 (PCD8) exhibit an overabundance of tetrapyrrole intermediates, particularly uroporphyrinogen III (Uro III), leading to the accumulation of singlet oxygen (1O2) during the transition from darkness to light, thereby instigating leaf necrosis. In this investigation, we uncovered that 1O2 stimulates biosynthesis of SA and JA, activating SA/JA signalling and the expression of responsive genes in PCD8 RNAi (pcd8) mutants. Introducing NahG or knocking out PAD4 or NPR1 significantly alleviates the cell death phenotype of pcd8 mutants, while coi1 partially mitigates the pcd8 phenotype. Further exploration revealed that EX1 and GUN1 can partially rescue the pcd8 phenotype by reducing the levels of Uro III and 1O2. Notably, mutations in EX1 mutations but not GUN1, substantially diminish SA content in pcd8 mutants compared to the wild type, implying that EX1 acts as the primary mediator of 1O2 signalling‐mediated SA biosynthesis. Moreover, the triple ex1 gun1 pcd8 displays a phenotype similar to ex1. Overall, our findings underscore that the 1O2‐induced cell death phenotype requires EX1/GUN1‐mediated retrograde signalling in pcd8 mutants, providing novel insights into the interplay between ROS and SA/JA. Summary statement: We uncovered that 1O2 stimulates biosynthesis of SA and JA, activating SA/JA signalling in Arabidopsis PCD8 RNAi mutants; and 1O2 burst‐triggered PCD requires SA and JA; interestingly, EX1 senses 1O2 and initiates the signalling of 1O2 to SA/JA, while GUN1 acts upstream of EX1 and mediates the signal from 1O2 to JA. Overall, it establishes the relationship between chlorophyll metabolism, hormone biosynthesis, and retrograde signalling pathways and provides a new perspective for the interaction between ROS and hormone. Menopause is a biological process experienced by all people assigned female at birth. A significant number of women experience mental ill health related to the major brain gonadal hormone shifts that occur in their midlife. There is poor understanding and management of the complex mental ill health issues, with the biological brain hormone changes receiving little formal attention. The current treatment advice is to manage this special type of mental ill health in the same way that all mental ill health is managed. This leads to poor outcomes for women and their families. Many women leave the workforce earlier than expected due to menopause-related depression and anxiety, with subsequent loss of salary and superannuation. Others describe being unable to adequately parent or maintain meaningful relationships – all ending in a poor quality of life. We are a large and diverse group of national and international clinicians, lived experience and social community advocates, all working together to innovate the current approaches available for women with menopausal mental ill health. Simple Summary: The indications for neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAT) have expanded in recent years both for locally advanced and early-stage breast cancer, with different pathological complete response (pCR) rates among different molecular subtypes. This retrospective two-center study aims to evaluate the diagnostic performance of Contrast-Enhanced Mammography (CEM) in assessing the response to NAT in breast cancer patients. The CEM sensitivity and specificity were 66.2% and 75.2%, with the highest specificity (80.9%) in HR+/HER2− and the highest sensitivity (70%) in triple-negative breast cancer. CEM is a valid tool to assess the pCR with different performances among the molecular subtypes and may be reliable in the decisional process of de-escalating surgical management. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAT) plays a crucial role in breast cancer (BC) treatment, both in advanced BC and in early-stage BC, with different rates of pathological complete response (pCR) among the different BC molecular subtypes. Imaging monitoring is mandatory to evaluate the NAT efficacy. This study evaluates the diagnostic performance of Contrast-Enhanced Mammography (CEM) in BC patients undergoing NAT. This retrospective two-center study included 174 patients. The breast lesions were classified based on the molecular subtypes in hormone receptor (HR+)/HER2−, HER2+, and triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). The histopathological analysis performed following surgery was used as a reference standard for the pCR. Sensitivity, specificity, PPV, and NPV were measured overall and for the different subtypes. We enrolled 174 patients, 79/174 (46%) HR+/HER2−, 59/174 (33.9%) HER2+, and 35/174 (20.1%) TNBC; the pCR was found in 64/174 (36.8%), of which 57.1% were TNBCs. In the total population, the CEM sensitivity and specificity were 66.2% and 75.2%, with a PPV of 61.4% and an NPV of 78.8%. The highest specificity (80.9%) and NPV (91.7%) were found in HR+/HER2−, while the highest sensitivity (70%) and PPV appeared (73.7%) in TNBC. Drought is one of the major yield‐limiting factors under climatic adversaries. The positive role of silicon (Si) in drought tolerance of plants has unfolded a new avenue for enhancing crop productivity through better Si use efficiency. It is hence interesting to understand the mechanistic insights pertaining to its beneficial roles under drought stress conditions. Higher plants sense drought stress via roots which, regulate aboveground plant growth under stress. Cellular and molecular modulations occurring at the root and soil interphases influence the survival and growth of plants under drought stress; therefore, it is intriguing to know how Si influences the soil–root interphase and how this interaction augments overall plant growth under drought. In this review, we summarised the roles of Si in the root systems, rhizosphere and their interactions that could improve plant's growth and development under drought conditions. We have discussed the direct and indirect effects of Si‐induced belowground changes on plant roots, soil physical, chemical and biological properties, and their mutual interactions in eliciting defence signalling, including hormone signalling pathways. A mechanistic model of Si‐induced beneficial effects in water‐limited environments is suggested, which could help improve the management of rainfed croplands through Si fertilisation. Simple Summary: In commercial hatcheries, chicken embryos are incubated in complete darkness. However, in a natural environment, chicken embryos receive light stimulation during the incubation process as hens need to leave the nest to feed or turn the eggs. Therefore, providing light during incubation is closer to the natural growth environment of chicken embryos, which may have a positive effect on their growth and development. This study investigated the effects of providing different wavelengths of light during incubation on the behaviour, growth, immunity, and stress responses of post-hatch chicks. The results indicated that providing white light during incubation may enhance the growth performance of post-hatch chicks and potentially improve their ability to cope with environmental changes. This study aims to determine the effects of light exposure during incubation on the growth and development of post-hatch chicks and to provide a basis for the development of effective lighting strategies during the incubation period. Manipulation of light during incubation may have an effect on post-hatch chicks through the role of prenatal stage. The effects of providing different wavelengths of light (white, blue, and green lights, dark as control) during incubation on the growth performance, organ development, immune response, stress related hormones, digestive enzymes and behaviour of post-hatch chicks were investigated for 1–42 days. A total of 60 chicks per light treatment in three batches were used in this study. The results showed that the percentage of chicks accessing to feed and water resources appeared not to be affected by incubation light. Chicks hatched under white light were found to have a growth advantage (p < 0.05). The weight of organs (except thymus), IgA, IgY, IgM and heterophil to lymphocyte (H/L) ratio for post-hatch chicks were not affected by incubation light (p > 0.05). Thymus weight was reduced in chicks incubated under blue light compared to dark incubation (p < 0.05). The jejunum amylase and ileum lipase activities were significantly affected by the light treatments (p < 0.01). All light incubation chicks had stable plasma corticosterone levels and may have better ability to cope with environmental changes. Sexual dimorphism among mammals includes variations in the pain threshold. These differences are influenced by hormonal fluctuations in females during the estrous and menstrual cycles of rodents and humans, respectively. These physiological conditions display various phases, including proestrus and diestrus in rodents and follicular and luteal phases in humans, distinctly characterized by varying estrogen levels. In this study, we evaluated the capsaicin responses in male and female mice at different estrous cycle phases, using two murine acute pain models. Our findings indicate that the capsaicin-induced pain threshold was lower in the proestrus phase than in the other three phases in both pain assays. We also found that male mice exhibited a higher pain threshold than females in the proestrus phase, although it was similar to females in the other cycle phases. We also assessed the mRNA and protein levels of TRPV1 in the dorsal root and trigeminal ganglia of mice. Our results showed higher TRPV1 protein levels during proestrus compared to diestrus and male mice. Unexpectedly, we observed that the diestrus phase was associated with higher TRPV1 mRNA levels than those in both proestrus and male mice. These results underscore the hormonal influence on TRPV1 expression regulation and highlight the role of sex steroids in capsaicin-induced pain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nuclear hormone receptors (NHRs) are a family of ligand-regulated transcription factors that control key aspects of development and physiology. The regulation of NHRs by ligands derived from metabolism or diet makes them excellent pharmacological targets, and the mechanistic understanding of how NHRs interact with their ligands to regulate downstream gene networks, along with the identification of ligands for orphan NHRs, could enable innovative approaches for cellular engineering, disease modeling and regenerative medicine. We review recent discoveries in the identification of physiologic ligands for NHRs. We propose new models of ligand-receptor co-evolution, the emergence of hormonal function and models of regulation of NHR specificity and activity via one-ligand and two-ligand models as well as feedback loops. Lastly, we discuss limitations on the processes for the identification of physiologic NHR ligands and emerging new methodologies that could be used to identify the natural ligands for the remaining 17 orphan NHRs in the human genome. Kisspeptin is an essential neuropeptide sitting at the apex of the hypothalamo-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) endocrine axis to regulate gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) neurons and downstream reproductive hormones. Kisspeptin neurons integrate feedback from sex steroids facilitating regulation of the menstrual cycle and mediate the effects of metabolic stressors on the reproductive axis. In this issue of the JCI, Torres and colleagues describe another pathway for kisspeptin signaling in astrocytes to influence GnRH neuronal output. Astrocytes had kisspeptin receptors that activated canonical intracellular signaling pathways to constrain the magnitude of kisspeptin-induced GnRH neuronal stimulation. Additionally, the appositions between kisspeptin and GnRH neurons were dynamic during the ovarian cycle, with astrocyte kisspeptin signaling proposed as a putative modulator of this neuroplasticity. Importantly, astrocyte kisspeptin signaling also mediated susceptibility to metabolic stressors and the development of obesity-induced hypogonadism, underscoring the physiological and pathological importance of this pathway and revealing the importance of nonneuronal signaling in reproductive health. Vocalization is an important communication tool that can reflect many aspects of an individual's internal and external condition. This is especially true for birds. Previous research has shown that bird calls and songs change in response to a variety of potential stressors, although the extent and direction of the changes depend on the nature of the stressor and the environment. Circulating glucocorticoids, such as corticosterone, often increase in response to stressors and mediate some of the observed changes via alterations of the individual's physiological state. Acute elevations of corticosterone often occur as a physiological response to short‐term stressors; however, the effects of this elevation on adult vocalizations have not been well documented. Here, we experimentally elevated corticosterone at two different levels using a noninvasive method and examined the effects on the vocal communication of male and female adult common mynas (Acridotheres tristis). Corticosterone elevation temporarily increased song output and some measures of song complexity, while call output decreased. These effects were dosage dependent (higher corticosterone levels had a stronger effect), most evident 40 min after ingestion, and some vocal changes were sex‐specific. Future studies should investigate whether the changes in vocal performance due to elevated glucocorticoids have consequences for the birds' behavior, reproductive success, and survival. The objective of this study was to elucidate the intricate interplay among miR-105–1, kisspeptin, and their synergistic influence on basic ovarian granulosa cell functions. The effects of miR-105–1 mimics or miR-105–1 inhibitor, kisspeptin (0, 1, and 10 ng/ml), and its combinations with miR-105–1 mimics on porcine granulosa cells were assessed. The expression levels of miR-105–1, viability, proliferation (accumulation of PCNA, cyclin B1, XTT-, and BrdU-positive cells), apoptosis (accumulation of bcl-2, bax, caspase 3, p53, TUNEL-positive cells), proportion of kisspeptin-positive cells, and the release of steroid hormones and IGF-I were analyzed. Transfection of cells with miR-105–1 mimics promoted cell viability and proliferation, the occurrence of kisspeptin, and the release of progesterone and IGF-I; in contrast, miR-105–1 mimics inhibited apoptosis and estradiol output. MiR-105–1 inhibitor had the opposite effect. Kisspeptin amplified the expression of miR-105–1, cell viability, proliferation, steroid hormones, and IGF‐I release and reduced apoptosis. Furthermore, the collaborative action of miR-105–1 mimics and kisspeptin revealed a synergistic relationship wherein miR-105–1 mimics predominantly supported the actions of kisspeptin, while kisspeptin exhibited a dual role in modulating the effects of miR-105–1 mimics. These findings not only affirm the pivotal role of kisspeptin in regulating basic ovarian cell functions but also represent the inaugural evidence underscoring the significance of miR-105–1 in this regulatory framework. Additionally, our results show the ability of kisspeptin to promote miR-105–1 expression and the ability of miR‐105–1 to promote the occurrence and effects of kisspeptin and, therefore, indicate the existence of the self‐stimulating kisspeptin‐miR‐105–1 axis. Salt stress is one of the major environmental problems in agricultural production, severely limiting crops' germination, growth and yield. Silicon (Si) is a widely recognized beneficial element in plants, which can promote plant growth especially under stressful conditions. With the emergence of nanotechnology in agriculture, silicon nanoparticles (SiNPs) have been shown to be a promising tool in nano-enabled agricultural production. However, the comparative effects of Si and SiNPs in alleviating salt stress in plants remain unclear, which would limit the application of SiNPs in agricultural practice. In this study, the effects of SiNPs and conventional Si (silicate) on tomato (a typical low-Si accumulator) seed germination, reactive oxygen species (ROS) content, antioxidant enzyme activity, and the expression of genes related to hormone metabolism were investigated. The results showed that SiNPs more effectively promoted seed germination percentage, fresh weight, and Si content than conventional Si. Simultaneously, SiNPs more significantly modulated the activities of antioxidant enzymes and alleviated salt stress-induced oxidative damage in tomato seeds. Moreover, exogenous SiNPs addition promoted the expression of genes responsible for gibberellin (GA) synthesis and abscisic acid (ABA) catabolism, while downregulating the expression of genes related to GA deactivation and ABA synthesis in tomato seeds under salt stress. Overall, our results indicate that SiNPs are more effective than conventional Si in promoting tomato seed germination under salt stress via modulating antioxidant enzyme activity and key endogenous hormone metabolism, which could be based on the higher accumulation of SiNPs in tomato seeds than conventional Si. Thermoinhibition refers to the inability of seeds to germinate when inhibited by high temperatures, but when environmental conditions return to normal, the seeds are able to germinate rapidly again, which is different from thermodormancy. Meanwhile, with global warming, the effect of the thermoinhibition phenomenon on the yield and quality of crops in agricultural production is becoming common. Lettuce, as a horticultural crop sensitive to high temperature, is particularly susceptible to the effects of thermoinhibition, resulting in yield reduction. Therefore, it is crucial to elucidate the intrinsic mechanism of action of thermoinhibition in lettuce seeds. This review mainly outlines several factors affecting thermoinhibition of lettuce seed germination, including endosperm hardening, alteration of endogenous or exogenous phytohormone concentrations, action of photosensitizing pigments, production and inhibition of metabolites, maternal effects, genetic expression, and other physical and chemical factors. Finally, we also discuss the challenges and potential of lettuce seed germination thermoinhibition research. The purpose of this study is to provide theoretical support for future research on lettuce seed germination thermoinhibition, and with the aim of revealing the mechanisms and effects behind lettuce seed thermoinhibition. Rowing races require extreme physical and psychological effort from every athlete. This study aimed to determine the dynamics of the salivary cortisol and alpha-amylase, as well as blood lactate throughout the specific load represented by a 6 km rowing race, conducted on a rowing ergometer. The sample consisted of 11 junior and senior rowers from HVK Gusar in Split (n = 11) who actively competed at club and international levels. Variables consisted of three repeated oral samples of the hormone cortisol and the enzyme alpha-amylase determined in saliva and three repeated blood lactate samples. Potential differences in the levels of the studied variables at different time points were determined using a repeated-measures ANOVA test. The results showed different dynamics of hormonal (cortisol) and metabolic (alpha-amylase and lactates) variables. All variables experienced a significant post-race increase, while other changes were not significant. The results highlighted that high-intensity rowing causes an increase in the body's cortisol, alpha-amylase, and lactate levels. This should be implemented in rowing training to find the right balance between high and low-intensity rowing, enabling athletes' progression while reducing the risk of overtraining. Introduction: The purpose was to study the indicators of physical development of primary-school-aged children with intellectual disability by observing the type of autonomic nervous regulation and their levels of catecholamines and serotonin. Methods: A total of 168 primary school age children were examined, of which 54 had intellectual disability. The autonomic nervous system was assessed using cardiointervalography; anthropometric parameters were applied in accordance with recommendations. The contents of serotonin and catecholamines in blood plasma and lymphocytes were assessed using enzyme immunoassay and luminescent histochemical methods. Results and conclusions: Delayed physical and mental development in children with intellectual disability were associated with low serotonin levels in this group of children. The optimal option for the physical development of children with intellectual disability is a sympathetic type of autonomic nervous regulation, while negative-type vagotonic nervous regulation was associated with the maximum delay in physical development. The hypersympathetic type of nervous regulation was accompanied by minimal changes in physical development, despite the hormonal imbalance in the ratio of catecholamines and serotonin. The level of the neurotransmitter serotonin is a prognostic marker of the physical development of children of primary school age. The total amount of catecholamines and serotonin in blood plasma has a direct relationship with the amount of these neurotransmitters in blood lymphocytes; the more hormones in plasma, the more of them in lymphocytes. Introduction: Epilepsy is a disorder of recurrent, unprovoked seizures affecting approximately 15 million individuals of childbearing potential worldwide. Patients with epilepsy rely on regular daily therapy with antiseizure medications (ASMs). Furthermore, ASMs are also prescribed for other neuropsychiatric indications (e.g. bipolar disorder, pain, migraines) with over 2% of the pregnancies in the United States involving prenatal exposure to ASMs. Areas covered: ASM concentrations are affected by hormonal and physiological changes in pregnancy, including increases in renal and hepatic blood flow, decreased protein binding, and changes in enzyme activity. Clearance changes typically reverse within a few weeks after delivery. During pregnancy, many ASMs, such as lamotrigine, levetiracetam, and oxcarbazepine, should have serum concentrations monitored and doses increased to maintain the individualized target range for seizure control. ASMs metabolized via glucuronidation, primarily lamotrigine, undergo marked increases in clearance throughout pregnancy, requiring about 3-fold the pre-pregnancy daily dose by delivery. Postpartum, ASM doses are usually decreased over several weeks to prevent drug toxicity. Expert opinion: In the future, the development of a physiologically-based pharmacokinetic model for various ASMs may enable empiric dose adjustments in pregnancy without the difficulties of frequent therapeutic drug monitoring. Introduction and purpose: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disease in the female reproductive age. As treatment guidelines include lifestyle changes, various diet types are being evaluated in terms of efficacy among them ketogenic diet (KD) which was also assessed in terms of its influence on another ovarian related disease - ovarian cancer. The aim of this paper is an analysis of the available scientific data in respect of the role of the KD as a part of the therapy of ovarian related disorders. The search was conducted using PubMed and Google Scholarship databases. Brief description of the state of knowledge: Ketogenic diet demonstrates favorable effects in the hormonal profile of PCOS-affected women. It was also noticed that its administration results in the reduction of BMI and the improvement in glycemic parameters. Most of the research was conducted by linking the ketogenic diet with the caloric restriction. In the matter of ovarian cancer the results are unclear; some of the research states the improvement of the quality of life of the participants, but there is some alarming data of the possible role of KD in enhancing the tumor growth. Conclusions: Ketogenic diet merits further research as a possible factor in the treatment of PCOS as foregoing results are pointing to its efficacy. Nevertheless, still more data is needed to determine its role as studies were conducted within a short period of time with relatively small research groups. There are also other limitations such as the lack of comparison with other dietary patterns with the caloric deficit which makes it difficult to deduce the main profitable factor. The disease of osteoporosis is characterized by impaired bone structure and an increased risk of fractures. There is a significant impact of cytokines and hormones on bone homeostasis and the diagnosis of osteoporosis. As defined by the World Health Organization (WHO), osteoporosis is defined as having a bone mineral density (BMD) that is 2.5 standard deviations (SD) or more below the average for young and healthy women (T score < −2.5 SD). Cytokines and hormones, particularly in the remodeling of bone between osteoclasts and osteoblasts, control the differentiation and activation of bone cells through cytokine networks and signaling pathways like the nuclear factor kappa-B ligand (RANKL)/the receptor of RANKL (RANK)/osteoprotegerin (OPG) axis, while estrogen, parathyroid hormones, testosterone, and calcitonin influence bone density and play significant roles in the treatment of osteoporosis. This review aims to examine the roles of cytokines and hormones in the pathophysiology of osteoporosis, evaluating current diagnostic methods, and highlighting new technologies that could help for early detection and treatment of osteoporosis. The polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is an endocrine disease in reproductively aged women and is charactered bydyslipidemia, hyper-androgenism, acne, hirsutism, menstrual irregularities, and ovarian dysfunction resulting in infertility. A balanced body mass index, physical fitness, biochemical and endocrine ratios play vital role in proper functioning of reproductive system and guard against PCOS development. This study was conducted to investigate the role of socio-demographic variables, lipid and hormonal level/ratios in obese and non-obese PCOS individuals. For this purpose, a total of 300 subjects were recruited from Southern Punjab consisting of obese cases (n=61), non-obese cases (n=89), obese controls (n=35) and non-obese controls(n=115). Analysis of the socio-demographic variables in PCOS showed significant association with geographical area, diet, monthly income, smoking status, education, medication, infertilitycomplications and family history in obese and non-obese cases compared to controls. Statistical analysis showed a significant difference in BMI, lipid profile (serum level of HDL, LDL, CHOL/HDL, HDL/LDL and LDL/HDL ratios) and endocrine profile (estradiol and insulin levels) between obese cases and obese controls. We have also observed a significantly lowerserum HDL, estradiol, levels and HDL/LDL ratio compared to control groups. While CHOL level was significantly higher in obese cases than obese controls, the serum TG/HDL ratio, LH, FSH, testosterone and progesterone levels were significantly higher in non-obese cases as compared to non-obese controls. Taken together, we showed that obesity is not an exclusive factor involved in the development of PCOS. The occurrence and prevalence of PCOS are attributed to multiple alternative factors which warrant future studies comprising of larger cohorts and at the national levels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Water deficit stress reduces crop yield in field crops, including sunflowers, at any growth stage. In response, most plants activate hormonal and gene expression patterns to mitigate damage. In this study, we evaluated changes in the physiological and gene transcription levels of two sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) inbred lines -one sensitive (B59 line) and one water stress-tolerant (B71)–in response to water stress, by using mannitol to simulate water deficit conditions, which provides moderate stress in both sunflower lines. The analyses of the accumulation of various phytohormones under this stress revealed that Jasmonic acid (JA) significantly increased in the shoots of both lines. Similarly, Salicylic acid (SA) increased in the shoots of both lines, although it also accumulated in B71 roots. In addition, Abscisic acid (ABA) and Indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) showed a considerable increase in the B59 shoots. Regarding the JA and SA pathways, the WRKY70 transcription levels were higher in the shoots of both lines and the roots of B71. The B59 line showed overtranscription of a gene related to the ABA pathway (XERICO) and genes associated with IAA (ARF9 and ARF16 genes). The B71 line, on the other hand, simultaneously triggered the JA, SA and ABA hormonal pathways in response to this stress condition. The ABA and JA hormonal pathways activated different TFs, such as RD20, RD22, RD26, ANAC19 and ANAC29, through MYC2. Both the JA and SA hormonal pathways activated the WRKY70 transcription factor. Altogether, each line triggered the hormonal and transcriptional pathways in response to water stress, although at varying intensities. The results suggest that the hormonal pathways of JA, SA, IAA and ABA, along with their primary associated genes, are activated in response to water deficit at the early growth stage in sunflower seedlings, which mitigates damage. Plant cell cultures are precious tools for investigating the response of plants to altered gravity at the cellular level. In the present study, the effects of clinorotation on the growth and cell cycle progression of cultured Nicotiana tabacum cells were investigated. Exposure to 2D-clinostat for 12 h increased the percentage of the cells in the G1 phase from 80 to 83.2%, while significantly reduced the percentage of those cells at the G2/M transition, compared to their corresponding control cells. When the duration of exposure was extended, the rate of cells transition to the M phase increased, ultimately promoted the exponential growth phase after 168 h. During the first 24 h of clinorotation, a significant rise in the levels of simple sugars within the cells was observed. The ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) of tobacco cells exhibited a downward trajectory that continued until 48 h. This research showed the influence of clinorotation on plant cells dependent on the exposure duration. The cells exhibited signs of stress after a short exposure, possibly due to high levels of soluble sugars that could impede cell advancement in the G1 phase by negatively affecting radical scavenging capacity (RSC). Upon extending the exposure duration to 168 h, the cells were adapted to the altered gravity conditions and improved their growth, probably due to a rise in auxin and gibberellin production. The results suggest cultured cells are a viable candidate, for examining plants in long-term space missions.Key message: The improvement of growth of plant cultured cells after longer treatment with altered gravity suggests them suitable candidates for investigation on plant response mechanisms to gravity in long-term space missions. Proteins need to acquire their native structure in order to become fully functional. In specific cases, the active conformation is obtained spontaneously; nevertheless, many proteins need the assistance of chaperones and co-chaperones to be properly folded. These proteins help to maintain protein homeostasis under control conditions and under different stresses. HOP (HSP70–HSP90 organizing protein) is a highly conserved family of co-chaperones that assist HSP70 and HSP90 in the folding of specific proteins. In the last few years, findings in mammals and yeast have revealed novel functions of HOP and re-defined the role of HOP in protein folding. Here, we provide an overview of the most important aspects of HOP regulation and function in other eukaryotes and analyse whether these aspects are conserved in plants. A key goal of the field of endocrinology has been to understand the hormonal mechanisms that drive social behavior and influence reactions to others, such as oxytocin. However, it has sometimes been challenging to understand which aspects and influences of hormonal action are conserved and common among mammalian species, and which effects differ based on features of these species, such as social system. This challenge has been exacerbated by a focus on a relatively small number of traditional model species. In this review, we first demonstrate the benefits of using non-traditional models for the study of hormones, with a focus on oxytocin as a case study in adding species with diverse social systems. We then expand our discussion to explore differing effects of oxytocin (and its response to behavior) within a species, with a particular focus on relationship context and social environment among primate species. Finally, we suggest key areas for future exploration of oxytocin's action centrally and peripherally, and how non-traditional models can be an important resource for understanding the breadth of oxytocin's potential effects. ABSTRACT Exoskeletons are a defining character of all arthropods that provide physical support for their segmented bodies and appendages as well as protection from the environment and predation. This ubiquitous yet evolutionarily variable feature has been instrumental in facilitating the adoption of a variety of lifestyles and the exploitation of ecological niches across all environments. Throughout the radiation that produced the more than one million described modern species, adaptability afforded by segmentation and exoskeletons has led to a diversity that is unrivalled amongst animals. However, because of the limited extensibility of exoskeleton chitin and cuticle components, they must be periodically shed and replaced with new larger ones, notably to accommodate the growing individuals encased within. Therefore, arthropods grow discontinuously by undergoing periodic moulting events, which follow a series of steps from the preparatory pre‐moult phase to ecdysis itself and post‐moult maturation of new exoskeletons. Each event represents a particularly vulnerable period in an arthropod's life cycle, so processes must be tightly regulated and meticulously executed to ensure successful transitions for normal growth and development. Decades of research in representative arthropods provide a foundation of understanding of the mechanisms involved. Building on this, studies continue to develop and test hypotheses on the presence and function of molecular components, including neuropeptides, hormones, and receptors, as well as the so‐called early, late, and fate genes, across arthropod diversity. Here, we review the literature to develop a comprehensive overview of the status of accumulated knowledge of the genetic toolkit governing arthropod moulting. From biosynthesis and regulation of ecdysteroid and sesquiterpenoid hormones, to factors involved in hormonal stimulation responses and exoskeleton remodelling, we identify commonalities and differences, as well as highlighting major knowledge gaps, across arthropod groups. We examine the available evidence supporting current models of how components operate together to prepare for, execute, and recover from ecdysis, comparing reports from Chelicerata, Myriapoda, Crustacea, and Hexapoda. Evidence is generally highly taxonomically imbalanced, with most reports based on insect study systems. Biases are also evident in research on different moulting phases and processes, with the early triggers and late effectors generally being the least well explored. Our synthesis contrasts knowledge based on reported observations with reasonably plausible assumptions given current taxonomic sampling, and exposes weak assumptions or major gaps that need addressing. Encouragingly, advances in genomics are driving a diversification of tractable study systems by facilitating the cataloguing of putative genetic toolkits in previously under‐explored taxa. Analysis of genome and transcriptome data supported by experimental investigations have validated the presence of an “ultra‐conserved” core of arthropod genes involved in moulting processes. The molecular machinery has likely evolved with elaborations on this conserved pathway backbone, but more taxonomic exploration is needed to characterise lineage‐specific changes and novelties. Furthermore, linking these to transformative innovations in moulting processes across Arthropoda remains hampered by knowledge gaps and hypotheses based on untested assumptions. Promisingly however, emerging from the synthesis is a framework that highlights research avenues from the underlying genetics to the dynamic molecular biology through to the complex physiology of moulting. The experiment is designed to explore the impact of Yimu Shenghuasan on the serum hormone levels and the expression levels of factors related to the TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway in a mouse model of endometritis. A total of 40 female mice, with similar age, body size, and weight, were randomly divided into four groups with 10 replicates per group and one mouse per replicate. Mice in the control group were instillated with 20 μL normal saline, the model group was instillated with 25 μL lipopolysaccharide (LPS, 1 g/L), the drug group was instillated with 2.0 g/kg Yimu Shenghuasan, and the treatment group was instillated with 25 μL LPS + 2.0 g/kg Yimu Shenghuasan, continuously gavage for three days, twice a day. The contentrations of estradiol (E2), progesterone (Pg), luteinizing hormone (LH), and folliclestimulating hormone (FSH) in the serum was detected by radioimmunoassay, the contentrations of interleukin-1β (IL-1β), interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-8 (IL-8), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in the serum was detected by ELISA method, and the expression of factors related to the TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway, including Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), myeloid differentiation factor (MyD88), nuclear factor-κB p65 (NF-κB p65), IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, TNF-α mRNA was detected by RT-PCR method. The results showed that compared with the control group, the serum E2, LH, and FSH contentrations in the model group was significantly reduced, while Pg content increased, the secretion and mRNA gene expression of IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, and TNF-α were significantly increased, and the expression of TLR4, MyD88, NF-κB p65 mRNA was significantly upregulated. Compared with the model group, the serum E2, LH, and FSH content in the treatment group was significantly increased, Pg content reduced, the secretion and mRNA gene expression of IL-6, IL-8, IL-1β, and TNF-α were significantly reduced, and the expression of TLR4, MyD88, NF-κB p65 mRNA was significantly downregulated. The study indicates that Yimu Shenghuasan, by regulating the content of hormones and inhibiting the changes in the levels of factors related to the TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway, has a relieving effect on LPS-induced mouse endometriosis. In our research, we utilized six small-fruited pepper germplasms as materials, selected cotyledons with the petiole and hypocotyls as explants, and conducted in vitro regeneration studies. Our outcomes specify that the most suitable explant is cotyledon with the petiole, and the suitable genotype is HNUCA341. The optimal medium for inducing and elongating adventitious buds for this genotype is Murashige and Skoog medium (MS) + 9.12 μM Zeatin (ZT) + 0.57 μM 3-Indoleacetic acid (IAA), with a bud induction rate of 44.4%. The best rooting induction medium is MS + 1.14 μM IAA, with a rooting rate of 86.7%. Research on the addition of exogenous hormones has revealed that the induction speed of buds in small-fruited pepper (HNUCA341) in the combination of ZT and IAA hormones (abbreviated as ZI) is quicker, and the induction effect is better. The histological observations indicate that ZI treatment accelerates the initiation of explant division and differentiation, causing a shorter duration of vascular-bundle tissue production. The plant hormone signaling pathway was significantly enriched by Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analysis, including ARR9 (LOC107843874, LOC107843885), ARR4 (LOC107848380, LOC107862455), AHK4 (LOC107870540), AHP1 (LOC107839518), LAX2 (LOC107846008), SAUR36 (LOC107852624), IAA8 (LOC107841020), IAA16 (LOC107839415), PYL4 (LOC107843441), and PYL6 (LOC107871127); these significantly enriched genes may be associated with in vitro regeneration. In addition, the carbon metabolism pathway and plant mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathway are also significantly enriched in KEGG. The results of the Gene Ontology (GO) analysis revealed that differentially expressed genes related to carbon metabolism and fixation, photosynthesis and MAPK signaling pathways were upregulated under ZI treatment. It was found that they might be associated with enhanced regeneration in vitro. Furthermore, we also screened out differentially expressed transcription factors, primarily from the MYB, bHLH, AP2/ERF, and NAC families. Overall, our work accumulated important data for the in-depth analysis of the molecular mechanism of in vitro regeneration of pepper, and provides valuable germplasm for establishing an efficient stable pepper genetic-transformation system based on tissue culture. Purpose To report historical patterns of pharmaceutical expenditures, to identify factors that may influence future spending, and to predict growth in drug spending in 2024 in the United States, with a focus on the nonfederal hospital and clinic sectors. Methods Historical patterns were assessed by examining data on drug purchases from manufacturers using the IQVIA National Sales Perspectives database. Factors that may influence drug spending in hospitals and clinics in 2024 were reviewed—including new drug approvals, patent expirations, and potential new policies or legislation. Focused analyses were conducted for biosimilars, cancer drugs, endocrine drugs, generics, and specialty drugs. For nonfederal hospitals, clinics, and overall (all sectors), estimates of growth of pharmaceutical expenditures in 2024 were based on a combination of quantitative analyses and expert opinion. Results In 2023, overall pharmaceutical expenditures in the US grew 13.6% compared to 2022, for a total of $722.5 billion. Utilization (a 6.5% increase), new drugs (a 4.2% increase) and price (a 2.9% increase) drove this increase. Semaglutide was the top drug in 2023, followed by adalimumab and apixaban. Drug expenditures were $37.1 billion (a 1.1% decrease) and $135.7 billion (a 15.0% increase) in nonfederal hospitals and clinics, respectively. In clinics, increased utilization drove growth, with a small impact from price and new products. In nonfederal hospitals, a drop in utilization led the decrease in expenditures, with price and new drugs modestly contributing to growth in spending. Several new drugs that will influence spending are expected to be approved in 2024. Specialty, endocrine, and cancer drugs will continue to drive expenditures. Conclusion For 2024, we expect overall prescription drug spending to rise by 10.0% to 12.0%, whereas in clinics and hospitals we anticipate an 11.0% to 13.0% increase and a 0% to 2.0% increase, respectively, compared to 2023. These national estimates of future pharmaceutical expenditure growth may not be representative of any health system because of the myriad of local factors that influence actual spending. A role for prenatal steroid hormones in the etiology of autism has been proposed, but evidence is conflicting. Here, we examined serum levels of maternal estradiol, testosterone, 17-hydroxyprogesterone (OHP), and cortisol from the first trimester of gestation (mean = 10.1 weeks) in relation to the odds of diagnosed autism with and without co-occurring intellectual disability (ID) in the offspring (n = 118 autism with ID, n = 249 autism without ID, n = 477 control). Levels of maternal hormones were measured using highly sensitive liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry, standardized according to gestational timing of sample collection, and analyzed with restricted cubic spline logistic regression models adjusting for child's sex and maternal health, demographic, and socioeconomic factors. We observed significant nonlinear associations between maternal estradiol, 17-OHP, and cortisol with autism, which varied with the presence of co-occurring ID. Compared to mean levels, lower levels of estradiol were associated with higher odds of autism with ID (odds ratio for concentrations 1 SD below the mean = 1.66; 95% CI, 1.24–2.11), while higher cortisol levels were associated with lower odds (odds ratio for 1 SD above the mean = 0.55; 95% CI, 0.36–0.88). In contrast, higher 17-OHP was associated with increased odds of autism without ID (odds ratio for 1 SD above the mean = 1.49; 95% CI, 1.11–1.99). We observed no evidence for interaction with sex of the child. These findings support the notion that the maternal steroid hormonal environment in early pregnancy may contribute to autism, but also emphasize the complex relationship between early-life steroid exposure and autism. Melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH) acts via its sole receptor MCHR1 in rodents and is an important regulator of homeostatic behaviors like feeding, sleep, and mood to impact overall energy balance. The loss of MCH signaling by MCH or MCHR1 deletion produces hyperactive mice with increased energy expenditure, and these effects are consistently associated with a hyperdopaminergic state. We recently showed that MCH suppresses dopamine release in the nucleus accumbens, which principally receives dopaminergic projections from the ventral tegmental area (VTA), but the mechanisms underlying MCH-regulated dopamine release are not clearly defined. MCHR1 expression is widespread and includes dopaminergic VTA cells. However, as the VTA is a neurochemically diverse structure, we assessed Mchr1 gene expression at glutamatergic, GABAergic, and dopaminergic VTA cells and determined if MCH inhibited the activity of VTA cells and/or their local microcircuit. Mchr1 expression was robust in major VTA cell types, including most dopaminergic (78%) or glutamatergic cells (52%) and some GABAergic cells (38%). Interestingly, MCH directly inhibited dopaminergic and GABAergic cells but did not regulate the activity of glutamatergic cells. Rather, MCH produced a delayed increase in excitatory input to dopamine cells and a corresponding decrease in GABAergic input to glutamatergic VTA cells. Our findings suggested thatMCH may acutely suppress dopamine release while disinhibiting local glutamatergic signaling to restore dopamine levels. Background: Histone deacetylases (HDACs) and histone acetyltransferases (HATs) are involved in plant growth and development as well as in response to environmental changes, by dynamically regulating gene acetylation levels. Although there have been numerous reports on the identification and function of HDAC and HAT in herbaceous plants, there are fewer report related genes in woody plants under drought stress. Results: In this study, we performed a genome-wide analysis of the HDAC and HAT families in Populus trichocarpa, including phylogenetic analysis, gene structure, conserved domains, and expression analysis. A total of 16 PtrHDACs and 12 PtrHATs were identified in P. trichocarpa genome. Analysis of cis-elements in the promoters of PtrHDACs and PtrHATs revealed that both gene families could respond to a variety of environmental signals, including hormones and drought. Furthermore, real time quantitative PCR indicated that PtrHDA906 and PtrHAG3 were significantly responsive to drought. PtrHDA906, PtrHAC1, PtrHAC3, PtrHAG2, PtrHAG6 and PtrHAF1 consistently responded to abscisic acid, methyl jasmonate and salicylic acid under drought conditions. Conclusions: Our study demonstrates that PtrHDACs and PtrHATs may respond to drought through hormone signaling pathways, which helps to reveal the hub of acetylation modification in hormone regulation of abiotic stress. Background: To investigate whether melatonin supplementation can enhance cardiometabolic risk factors, reduce oxidative stress, and improve hormonal and pregnancy-related factors in patients with PCOS. Methods: We conducted a systematic search of PubMed/Medline, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library for articles published in English from inception to March 2023. We included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on the use of melatonin for patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). We performed a meta-analysis using a random-effects model and calculated the standardized mean differences (SMDs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results: Six studies met the inclusion criteria. The result of meta-analysis indicated that melatonin intake significantly increase TAC levels (SMD: 0.87, 95% CI: 0.46, 1.28, I2 = 00.00%) and has no effect on FBS, insulin, HOMA-IR, TC, TG, HDL, LDL, MDA, hs-CRP, mFG, SHBG, total testosterone, and pregnancy rate in patients with PCOS compare to controls. The included trials did not report any adverse events. Conclusion: Melatonin is a potential antioxidant that may prevent damage from oxidative stress in patients with PCOS. Chemotherapeutic drugs have demonstrated effectiveness in treating various neoplastic conditions; however, they can also have detrimental effects on male gonadal function and fertility. Consequently, interest has grown in identifying novel approaches that can mitigate chemotherapy-induced testicular damage. Thymoquinone (TQ), the chief active component of the volatile oil of Nigella sativa (NS), has a wide range of therapeutic properties, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic effects. The aim of this systematic review was to identify experimental animal studies that have evaluated the protective effects of TQ against testicular complications associated with chemotherapy. In accordance with the preferred reporting items for systematic review and meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, a thorough search was performed across several databases (PubMed, EBSCOhost, Sage and Scopus) to identify experimental studies published from 2010 to May 2022 that focused on rodent models and compared the effects of TQ versus other chemotherapeutic drugs. Eight studies met the inclusion criteria, comparing TQ with methotrexate (MTX), 6-mercaptopurine (6-MP), cyclophosphamide (CPA), bleomycin (BL), doxorubicin (DOX) or busulfan (BUS). The results of these studies consistently demonstrated that TQ significantly improved sperm parameters, the levels of oxidative stress (OS) markers, apoptosis markers, and hormones and testicular histopathology, indicating that TQ has protective effects against chemotherapy-induced damage. TQ mitigated chemotherapy-induced testicular toxicity by decreasing lipid peroxidation and enhancing the activity of antioxidant enzymes within chemotherapy-treated testes. These findings highlight the potential of TQ as a therapeutic agent that can ameliorate testicular complications associated with chemotherapy, thereby providing a basis for further research and potential therapeutic applications. Red onion is a vegetable commodity that has high economic value. The use of red onion as an ingredient in Indonesian cuisine produces waste in the form of onion skin which is rarely utilized and often discarded. The content of auxin, gibberellin and cytokinin hormones in red onion skin turns the material into a potential plant growth regulator. This study aims to determine the effect of application and the best concentration of red onion skin soak on the growth and production of pakcoy. This research was conducted in the Greenhouse of Agroecotechnology Department, Faculty of Agriculture, Lambung Mangkurat University from September to November 2022. This study used a single-factor Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 4 treatments and 5 replications. The results showed that the application of red onion skin soak affected the growth of pakcoy at 21 HST and 28 HST. There was no best concentration found, because the concentration of red onion skin soaking 20%, 30%, and 40% did not show significant differences. The recommendation for the application of red onion skin soak to support pakcoy growth is a concentration of 20% followed by the application of organic fertilizer at the appropriate dose. The skin serves as the body's primary defense against external insults. Ultraviolet lights from the sun can directly impact the skin surface, affecting internal environment. At the same time, the body's response to ultraviolet lights varies with hormone levels. Under different levels of sex hormone, ultraviolet light can modulate local glucocorticoid levels, resulting in inhibition of inflammation, immunosuppression, and regulation of insulin-related glucose and lipid metabolism. In contrast, melatonin can inhibit ultraviolet irradiation-induced skin aging. This article explores the links between ultraviolet irradiation and corticoids, sex hormones, insulin, and melatonin, facilitating the development of approaches for the prevention and treatment of diseases. Primary brain tumors are a heterogeneous group of neoplasms, originating from glial and other cell types in the central nervous system (CNS). Despite advancements in technology and medicine, the prognosis for malignant brain tumors remains poor. This situation requires novel therapeutic approaches. Melatonin, a hormone produced by the pineal gland, regulates sleep and circadian rhythms. It also possesses various biological functions, such as antioxidant properties, immune modulation, and tumor suppression. This review analyzes existing research on the effects of melatonin on brain tumors, focusing on its therapeutic potential and mechanisms of action, and highlights melatonin’s promise as a complementary therapy against adult and pediatric high-grade gliomas. Herbal contraceptives are often considered as an affordable and accessible option for birth control practice. This study evaluated the antifertility activity of a South African herbal mixture made from three plants (Helichrysum caespititium (DC.) Sond. ex Harv , Bulbine frutescens (L.) Willd and Teucrium trifidum Retz; ratio 1:1:1) in female Sprague-Dawley rats. Phytochemical profile of the herbal extract was analysed using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled to quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-QTOF/MS). To determine the effects of the herbal mixture on the oestrus cycle, 20 female Sprague‑Dawley rats were divided into four groups (A, B, C, and D) of 5 rats per group. Group A served as the control and received distilled water for 21 days. Group B, C and D received the herbal mixture extract at a dosage of 100, 300, and 500 mg/kg, respectively, for 21 days, and vaginal smears were monitored daily. To evaluate the effects of the extract on the reproductive outcome, 21 female rats were divided into 3 groups (Groups E, F, and G), consisting of 7 rats per group. Group E served as the control and received distilled water. Group F received 300 mg/kg of the extract pre-coital for 5 days, while Group G received 300 mg/kg of the extract prior to mating with continuous administration for 14 days. The phytochemical analysis of the herbal extract revealed the presence of 19 compounds, notably verbascoside, which is known to exert either oestrogenic or anti-estrogenic activities. The results showed that 300 and 500 mg/kg dose extended (p < 0.05) the duration of the metestrus phase when compared to the control, confirming the disruption of the oestrous cycle. The prolonged metestrus phase of the oestrus cycle by the herbal extract could be indicative of low reproductive hormones, decreasing the probability of conception. However, the herbal extract at 300 mg/kg had no antifertility activity in female Sprague-Dawley rats based on the number of litters in the treatment group relative to the control. Glaucophytes, an enigmatic group of freshwater algae, occupy a pivotal position within the Archaeplastida, providing insights into the early evolutionary history of plastids and their host cells. These algae possess unique plastids, known as cyanelles that retain certain ancestral features, enabling a better understanding of the plastid transition from cyanobacteria. In this study, we investigated the role of ethylene, a potent hormone used by land plants to coordinate stress responses, in the glaucophyte alga Cyanophora paradoxa. We demonstrate that C. paradoxa produces gaseous ethylene when supplied with exogenous 1‐aminocyclopropane‐1‐carboxylic acid (ACC), the ethylene precursor in land plants. In addition, we show that cells produce ethylene natively in response to abiotic stress, and that another plant hormone, abscisic acid (ABA), interferes with ethylene synthesis from exogenously supplied ACC, while positively regulating reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation. ROS synthesis also occurred following abiotic stress and ACC treatment, possibly acting as a second messenger in stress responses. A physiological response of C. paradoxa to ACC treatment is growth inhibition. Using transcriptomics, we reveal that ACC treatment induces the upregulation of senescence‐associated proteases, consistent with the observation of growth inhibition. This is the first report of hormone usage in a glaucophyte alga, extending our understanding of hormone‐mediated stress response coordination into the Glaucophyta, with implications for the evolution of signaling modalities across Archaeplastida. Plant leaves contain multiple cell types which achieve distinct characteristics whilst still coordinating development within the leaf. The bundle sheath possesses larger individual cells and lower chloroplast content than the adjacent mesophyll, but how this morphology is achieved remains unknown. To identify regulatory mechanisms determining bundle sheath cell morphology we tested the effects of perturbing environmental (light) and endogenous signals (hormones) during leaf development of Oryza sativa (rice). Total chloroplast area in bundle sheath cells was found to increase with cell size as in the mesophyll but did not maintain a 'set‐point' relationship, with the longest bundle sheath cells demonstrating the lowest chloroplast content. Application of exogenous cytokinin and gibberellin significantly altered the relationship between cell size and chloroplast biosynthesis in the bundle sheath, increasing chloroplast content of the longest cells. Delayed exposure to light reduced the mean length of bundle sheath cells but increased corresponding leaf length, whereas premature light reduced final leaf length but did not affect bundle sheath cells. This suggests that the plant hormones cytokinin and gibberellin are regulators of the bundle sheath cell‐chloroplast relationship and that final bundle sheath length may potentially be affected by light‐mediated control of exit from the cell cycle. Summary statement: In rice (Oryza sativa) the timing of light exposure during leaf development changes mature bundle sheath morphology, reducing maximum cell length under extended darkness. Objective To observe the effect of comprehensive treatment on reproductive hormones, MicroRNA (miRNA) and prognosis of infertile women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Methods A total of 120 infertile PCOS patients admitted to Jiangmen Central Hospital hospital from July 2020 to July 2022 were randomly divided into 3 groups, 40 cases in each group. The control A group took medication (estrogen + clomiphene + metformin), the control B group took physical and mental interventions (diet + exercise + psychology), and the composite treatment group took a comprehensive treatment program (medication + physical and mental interventions), the intervention lasted for 6 consecutive courses. The prognosis of the three groups was statistically analyzed, as well as their psychological status before and after intervention [The Positive and Negative Affect Scale (PANAS)], miR-320 expression, miR-27a expression, body mass index (BMI), inhibin B (IHNB), hip circumference, anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH), waist circumference, luteinizing hormone/follicle stimulating hormone (LH/FSH). Results Comparison of positive emotion scores in the PANAS scale of three groups after three and six courses of intervention: composite treatment group>control group B>control group A; comparison of negative emotion scores: composite treatment groupcontrol group A>control group B, comparison of miR-27a, LH/FSH, IHNB, and AMH levels: composite treatment group 0.05). This study focuses on the comparative metabolic profiling and effects of two steroid types: natural and synthetic, specifically 17α-methyl testosterone (17α-MT) at varying concentrations (1.5, 2, and 3 mg/kg) in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Over a 75-day feeding trial, growth metrics, such as feed efficiency, daily specific growth, live weight gain, total weight gain, and survival rate were systematically monitored every 15 days. At the end of the feeding trial, histopathology, immunohistochemistry, and metabolome analyses were performed in the high-concentration groups (3 mg/kg natural and 3 mg/kg synthetic), in which the lowest survival rate was determined. Key findings reveal that the type of hormone significantly influences growth parameters. While some natural steroids enhanced certain growth aspects, synthetic variants often yielded better results. The metabolomic analysis highlighted significant shifts in the metabolism of tryptophan, purine, folate, primary bile acids, phosphonates, phosphinates, and xenobiotics via cytochrome P450 pathways. Histopathologically, the natural hormone groups showed similar testicular, hepatic, muscular, gill, cerebral, renal, and intestinal tissue structures to the control, with minor DNA damage and apoptosis observed through immunohistochemistry. Increasing levels of polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) in the environment poses huge global health threat. Prolonged exposure to PS-MPs results in both male and female infertility, with a deleterious effect on reproductive health. In rats, the disruptive effects of chemotoxicants have been countered by lycopene (LYC). This study examined the protective benefits of lycopene (LYC) against spermatological damage and hormonal alterations brought on by polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) in male rats. Twenty Wistar rats were split into four groups of five rats, each consisting of: the control group, the PSMPs treatment group, the PS-MPs + LYC cotreatment group, and the LYC supplementation group. Severe testicular histological damage was seen to have resulted from exposure to PS-MPs. The PS-MPs treatment dramatically reduced the antioxidant enzyme activities while raising the levels of ROS and MDA, thus reducing sperm progressive motility. Also, spermatological damage and hormonal alterations brought on by polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) were also prevented by the effects of lycopene (LYC). In conclusion, LYC supplementation has the ability to reduce the harmful effects of PSMPs on the male reproductive system. Cost and availability have often dictated the use of heterologous/alien prolactins in experiments, particularly in vivo. The assumption has been that what is initiated in the target cell is representative of the homologous hormone since many heterologous mammalian prolactins bind to and activate rodent receptors. Here, we examined gene expression in mouse liver in response to a 7‐day treatment with recombinant mouse prolactin (mRecPRL), recombinant ovine prolactin (oRecPRL) and pituitary extract ovine prolactin (oPitPRL). Having established mouse ribosomal protein S9 as the most stable reference gene in the liver in the absence and presence of prolactin treatment, we examined expression of the two most highly expressed prolactin receptors (PRLRs) and three members of the Cyp3a group of cytochrome P450 isoenzymes by qRTPCR. For short form (SF) 3 PRLR, mRecPRL doubled expression while for oRecPRL and oPitPRL expression was only 1.3‐fold control. For the long form (LF) PRLR, changes were similar to those seen for SF 3 PRLR, such that the SF3:LF PRLR ratio remained the same. Expression of the Cyp3as was also dependent on the prolactin origin and, although mRecPRL always stimulated, the other PRLs caused varying results. Compared to control, Cyp3a16 was stimulated 12‐fold by mRecPRL, 3‐fold by oRecPRL, and 6‐fold by oPitPRL. For Cyp3a41, mRecPRL was 3.7‐fold control, oRecPRL was without effect, and oPitPRL was 2‐fold control. Importantly, for Cyp3a44, mRecPRL stimulated 2‐fold, whereas both oRecPRL and oPitPRL had an opposite, inhibitory effect, with expression at 0.5‐fold control. We conclude that homologous hormone had the largest stimulatory effect on expression of all measured genes and that by contrast heterologous hormone showed reduced activity, no activity, or opposite activity, depending on the gene being analyzed. The instability of remission in alcohol dependence (AD) creates a need to search for criteria for predicting its duration. The aim of study was to determine the hormones, oxidized proteins, and lipids in patients with AD, and the possible relations between these parameters and the duration of remission. Blood samples were obtained from 49 male patients with AD after alcohol detoxification (Total group). Two groups of patients were formed: with unstable therapeutic remission up to 6 months (UTR-group); with stable therapeutic remission which lasted 12 months or longer (STR-group). The control group comprised men without AD. The levels of carbonylated proteins (CP), lipid peroxidation (TBA-RS) were determined in the blood plasma. The levels of cortisol, testosterone total, thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), triiodothyronine free (fT3), and thyroxine free (fT4) in the blood serum were measured. The Total group of patients showed an increase in CP, TBA-RS, Cortisol, cortisol/testosterone ratio, and a decrease in TSH, fT3, and fT3/fT4 levels. Hypoestrogenism related to the cessation of ovarian function increases the risk of metabolic disorders in postmenopausal women. Women with primary ovarian insufficiency (POI) are exposed to longer period of estrogen deficiency together with a subsequently higher risk of long-term comorbidities. To compare metabolic along with hormonal status among newly diagnosed women with POI with pre- and postmenopausal women. To investigate the impact of POI etiology on both metabolic and hormonal profiles. A case-control study with women assigned to one of the groups: 1) POI (n = 216), 2) age-matched premenopausal (n = 216), 3) postmenopausal (n = 227). Lipid profile, fasting glucose and insulin levels together with insulin resistance were determined among all participants. POI women exhibited increased both total cholesterol (TC, p = 0.04) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C, p < 0.01) compared to the premenopausal women and higher triglycerides (TG, p < 0.001) than postmenopausal women. POI group showed higher fasting glucose level (p = 0.04) differently to premenopausal women. The idiopathic POI group showed both lower sex hormone binding globulin (p = 0.02) and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (p = 0.04) along with reduced TC (p = 0.03) and TG (p = 0.01) together with increased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (p = 0.04) levels than non-idiopathic POI women. Women with newly diagnosed POI exhibited less favorable lipid profile than pre- or postmenopausal women. Background This case describes a Reeves' muntjac deer (Muntiacus reevesi) with a suspected undescended testicle or cryptorchidism. The cryptorchid testicle could not be palpated or visualized with sonography. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) imaging was performed to avoid an exploratory surgical operation, but no cryptorchid testicle was discovered. The final diagnosis was a singular testicular anorchia. Discussion Cryptorchidism and hypogonadism affect a relatively small population of male infants but are the most common male genitourinary anomalies. Identifying the location of the undescended testicle is paramount because surgical intervention should occur before the individual's first birthday. Although sonography and magnetic resonance imaging can help identify the location of undescended testicles, when the testicle is intra-abdominal, surgical intervention often is required to identify or confirm the location. Conclusion Although CT is not a first-line imaging modality in human infants with suspected cryptorchidism because of the associated radiation exposure, this case serves as evidence that it might be useful.
