The purpose of this testing was to characterize the Texas Instruments SNV54LVC00AW for single-event latchup (SEL) in support of a NASA GSFC flight program. The SNV54LVC00A quadruple 2-input positive-NAND gate. These devices were tested at the Berkeley Accelerator Space Effects (BASE) Facility at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) where they were irradiated with the 10 MeV/amu heavy ion cocktail.

We present a brief overview of select NASA radiation hardness assurance guideline update activities as well as cross-agency workforce development efforts.

Intentions of humans revisiting the moon, exploring new planets, and the ever sought out goal of landing humans on Mars is a focus for NASA. With the most recent human missions being the Apollo missions in the 1960's-1970's, upgrades to previous landers are a continuing project. One of the most important and difficult parts of these missions is the landing. An unknown environment and terrain provide challenges for the crew or lander, that may result in broken instruments, overuse of fuel and worst of all, loss of life. The following paper highlights the work done to build a demo lidar scanner for landers and other spacecrafts that touchdown on an alien surface. This instrument intends to provide key information about the surface by creating a three-dimensional map of the terrain in a couple of seconds. Information that can then be used as feedback to the guidance computer and pilots to make an informed decision about a safe landing site. The work is being undertaking by a team at Goddard Spaceflight Center under the electro-mechanical systems branch, and the following represents the work done to create a prototype scanner.

Semicoa's silicon switching transistors, JANTXV2N2222AUB was tested for total ionizing dose (TID) response beginning on November 4, 2019. This test served as the radiation lot acceptance test (RLAT) for the lot date code (LDC) tested. Low dose rate (LDR) irradiations were performed in this test so that the device susceptibility to enhanced low dose rate sensitivity (ELDRS) could be determined.

The purpose of this test was to validate the Analog Devices (ADI) RH1021BMH-10 flight lot for use in the fabrication of Europa Clipper Propulsion subsystem flight hardware. This test shall serve as the radiation lot acceptance test (RLAT) for this flight lot with wafer lot number 769658.1 and lot date code (LDC) 1430A. Low dose rate (LDR) irradiations were performed in this test so that the device susceptibility to enhanced low dose rate sensitivity (ELDRS) could be determined.

This paper establishes an analytical model for the device drain-source overvoltage related to the two loops in three level active neutral point clamped (3L-ANPC) converters. Taking into account the non-linear device output capacitance, two commonly used modulations are investigated in detail. The result shows that the line switching frequency device usually has higher overvoltage, and the switching speed of the high switching frequency device is not strongly influenced by the multiple loops. By keeping the non-active clamping switch off, the effect of the non-linear device output capacitance can be significantly mitigated, which helps reduce the overvoltage. Moreover, the loop inductance can be reduced with vertical loop layout and magnetic cancellation in PCB and busbar design. A 500 kVA 3L-ANPC converter using SiC MOSFETs is built and tested. The experimental results validate the overvoltage model of the two modulations as well as the busbar design. With the non-active clamping switch off, the overvoltage of both the high and line switching frequency devices is significantly reduced, which helps achieve higher switching speed.

This presentation describes an Intern experience working with analog to digital converters.

Technology is changing at a fast pace. Transistor geometries are getting smaller, voltage thresholds are getting lower, design complexity is exponentially increasing, and user options are expanding. Consequently, reliable insertion of error detection and correction (EDAC) circuitry has become relatively challenging. As a response, a variety of mitigation techniques are being evaluated. They range from weak EDAC circuits that save area and power to strong mitigation strategies that are a great expense to systems. This presentation will focus on radiation induced susceptibilities for a variety of FPGA types and ASIC devices. In addition, the user will be provided information on applicable mitigation strategies per device.

The main goal of this project is to fulfill the need of a controller upgrade for the Cavity Environmental Control System (CECS) on the NASA SOFIA aircraft. The preceding controller had multiple disadvantages including operating in an unpressurized region, incomplete functionality implementation, limited fault and status monitoring capability, and reduced maintainability and reliability. The new controller will go through the NASA design process to fulfill all the requirements of CECS operation including complete functionality of all devices currently installed on the aircraft, added devices to improve fault and health monitoring, and overall improvement in maintainability and reliability.

When originally launched, the International Space Station (ISS) primary Electric Power System (EPS) used Nickel-Hydrogen (Ni-H2) batteries to store electrical energy. The electricity for the space station is generated by its solar arrays, which charge batteries during insolation for subsequent discharge during eclipse. The Ni-H2 batteries were designed to operate for ten years at a 35% depth of discharge (DOD) maximum during normal operation in a Low Earth Orbit. For service beyond that period, upgraded Li-Ion Orbital Replacement Units (ORUs) were designed. These are the largest Li-Ion batteries ever utilized for a human rated spacecraft. The first set of six Ni-H2 batteries was replaced by Li-Ion batteries in December 2016; the second set of six was launched in September 2018 and installed in March 2019. The third set of six were launched in September 2019. Three batteries were installed in September 2019, with the remaining three to be installed in January 2020. This paper will include a brief overview of the ISS Li-Ion battery system architecture, start up of the second and third set of 6 batteries and the on-orbit status of all 18 batteries, plus the status of the Li-Ion cell life testing.

NASA seeks safe, high performing battery module designs that can deliver 3C discharge rates continuously, achieve 160 Wh/kg, and is passively propagation resistant to a single cell thermal runaway event. One solution is presented that uses a patented oscillating heat pipe technology for thermal management. Combined with light weight packaging and a new commercially available gas permeable vent port, all 5 preliminary safety tests results performed to date are showing ample margins.

This report presents 2019 LBNL SEE data and compares previous Texas A&M data to LBNL SEE DUT responses.

In order to evaluate the feasibility of newly developed GaN devices in a cryogenically-cooled converter, this paper characterizes a 650 V enhancement-mode Gallium-Nitride high-electron-mobility transistor (GaN HEMT) at cryogenic temperatures. The characterization includes both static and dynamic behaviors. The results show that this GaN HEMT is an excellent device candidate to be applied in cryogenic-cooled applications. For example, transconductance at cryogenic temperature (93 K) is 2.5 times higher than one at room temperature (298 K), and accordingly, peak di/dt during turn-on transients at cryogenic temperature is around 2 times of that at room temperature. Moreover, the on-resistance of the channel at cryogenic temperature is only one-fifth of that at room temperature. The corresponding explanations of performance trends at cryogenic temperatures are also given from the view of semiconductor physics. In addition, several device failures were observed during the dynamic characterization of GaN HEMTs at cryogenic temperatures. The ultra-fast switching speed induced high di/dt and dv/dt at cryogenic temperatures amplifies the negative effects of parasitics inside the switching loop. Based on failure waveforms, two failure modes were classified, and detailed failure mechanisms caused by ultra-fast switching speed are given in this paper.

Solar neutrons are the tell-tale of highly energetic processes (e.g. solar flares) at the Sun in which particle acceleration is taking place over a broad range in energy. Unlike charged radiation, neutrons escape unscathed from the ambient magnetic fields, providing a view of particle acceleration unhindered by the effects of transport. High-energy neutrons are challenging to measure with the traditional double scatter technique based on time-of-flight (ToF). This technique is limited by the finite flight path and active scintillator sizes required by small satellite platforms. The new SOlar Neutron TRACking (SONTRAC) concept, based on scintillating-fiber bundles, will provide high resolution imaging of fast neutrons at energies where the bulk of solar and magnetospheric neutrons resides. Recent development of the new SONTRAC instrument concept's advanced electronics and processing algorithms are presented.

This paper introduces the new Portable Laser Guided Robotic antenna range (PLGR) at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) Glenn Research Center. Previous work used industrial robots in fixed facilities to characterize antennas and required fixtures that do not lend themselves to portable applications.NASA's PLGR system is designed for in-situ antenna measurements at a remote site. The system consists of a robot arm mounted on a vertical lift and a laser tracker, each on a portable base. The lift and laser tracker enable scanning a surface larger than the robot's reach. To accomplish this the robot first collects all points within its reach, then the system is moved and the laser tracker is used to relocate the robot before additional points are captured.The PLGR architecture will be discussed including how safety systems and path planning are combined to effectively characterize antennas. Software was written in high level languages for flexible integration of vector network analyzers and antenna controllers. Lastly, data will be shown to demonstrate the system functionality and accuracy.

This presentation highlights NASA AFRCs wireless systems development plans as well as technological needs and airworthiness challenges for flight test/research applications. The presentation discusses desired wireless sensing and wireless data communication methodologies for specific aircraft areas such as wings, tail, engines, and landing gears. The presentation also provides information for potential industry partners seeking to collaborate in the development of sensors through various means as well as to verify and validate wireless sensors and systems through flight at AFRC.

High precision attitude measurement systems obviate the need for the beacon from the receiver making it possible for the spacecraft to beam a laser communications signal to a ground station without the ground station advertising its location. The research presented targets new detection and estimation methods to improve the accuracy in locating stars on a focal plane detector, and an understanding of the effects of changes in the optics design parameters and aberration, including defocus, on the navigation solution itself. This understanding can lead to an optimization of the attitude solution with respect to those optics realm parameter changes. The methodology discussed includes the development of a model of a current star tracker system. Using this model, multiple algorithms are implemented, including a multi-hypothesis method (MHT), to detect and estimate the position of the stars on the focal plane detector. It will be shown that using the MHT for detection and estimation, a greater accuracy can be found for each star estimation from more traditional detection and estimation algorithms. The approach then uses the model to develop statistics of the star tracker and the attitude estimation outputs to understand the accuracy, or variance, of the system's attitude solution. This solution is repeated for a range of defocus aberration, and a lower limit to the variance of the attitude solution is shown. A Cramer Rao lower bound solution is derived for the star tracker system and the results are compared to the Monte Carlo analysis from the model and shown to correlate very well. The approach uses a star image not as a Gaussian spot on the focal plane as done in previous work, and use of an image that includes the effects of aberrations of the optic system, and the effects of under-sampling and noise from the focal plane detector as well. Analysis includes exploring a star tracker's accuracy improvement through the combination of focus error and under-sampling effects alone, possibly contradicting conventional wisdom and approaches.

Presentation to support a Summit/TIM with various Stakeholders (Ground and Flight) to perform a GAP analysis associated with ground and spacecraft maintenance, maintainability, and availability activities in order to identify missing Agency planning and guidance materials.

Brittle single crystals are used in NASA applications ranging from lenses to centrally heated laser slabs. Despite standard procedures to design such components, unexpected failures occasionally occur. The ICEsat-2 (Ices,Cloud, and Elevation satellite-2) employs Yttrium orthovanadate single crystals in laser amplifiers and oscillators. Although the systems are currently flying and successfully operating, some unexpected crystal fractures occurred just prior to flight. The failures were traced to poor crystal quality along with time-dependent chemical reaction within the system assembly that increased stress beyond expectations and promoted both fast fracture and stress corrosion. This presentation will discuss failure analysis of the crystals and the chemical reactions that promoted failures, along with corrective actions taken to reduce likelihood of fracture over the three-year mission. Re-designed lasers were stored for 12 months and operated for a total of 1,000 hours without signs of degradation.

Single-event effects and total ionizing dose testing are described for a 32-layer NAND flash memory, in both SLC and MLC configurations, with special considerations for unique three-dimensional test results. Extraction of three-dimensional heavy-ion test data presents a unique visualization of angular effects in NAND flash. Pattern dependence differences between SLC and MLC mode are noted, along with slightly non-uniform angular cross-section results due to the complex volume. Finally, TID data under different operating and bias conditions shows that the failure point remains the higher-voltage erasure circuitry.

Increasing the power density and efficiency of electric machines (motors and generators) is integral to bringing Electrified Aircraft (EA) to commercial realization. To that end an effort to create a High Efficiency Megawatt Motor (HEMM) with a goal of exceeding 98% efficiency and 1.46 MW of power has been undertaken at the NASA Glenn Research Center. Of the motor components the resistive losses in the stator windings are by far the largest contributor (34%) to total motor loss. The challenge is the linear relationship between resistivity and temperature, making machine operation sensitive to temperature increases. In order to accurately predict the thermal behavior of the stator the thermal conductivity of the Litz wire-potting-electrical insulation system must be known. Unfortunately, this multi material system has a wide range of thermal conductivities (0.1 W/m-K – 400 W/m-K) and a high anisotropy (axial vs transverse) making the prediction of the transverse thermal conductivity an in turn the hot spot temperatures in the windings is difficult. In order to do this a device that simulates the thermal environment found in the HEMM stator was designed. This device is not unlike the motorettes (little motors) that are described in IEEE standards for testing electrical insulation lifetimes or other electric motor testing. However, because the HEMM motor design includes significant rotor electrical and thermal considerations the term motorette was not deemed appropriate. Instead statorette (or little stator) was adopted as the term for this test device. This paper discussed the design, thermal heat conjugate analysis (thermal model), manufacturing and testing of HEMM's statorette. Analysis of the results is done by thermal resistance network model and micro thermal model and is compared to analytical predictions of thermal conductivity of the insulated and potted Litz wire system.

The small Stirling convertor currently under development at the NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC) is designed to produce one watt of electrical power from eight watts of heat. Previous radioisotope power systems (RPS) made use of the General-Purpose Heat Source (GPHS) which produces 250 watts of heat but is unsuitable for a one-watt Stirling convertor. The only heat source available is the Light-Weight Radioisotope Heating Unit (LWRHU) which produces one watt of heat and is primarily used to provide heat to electronics and instrumentation to maintain their appropriate operating temperature. Unfortunately, the LWRHU has a heat flux of 272 W/m-squared (watts per square meter) compared to the GPHS heat flux of 6000 W/m-squared which greatly increases the demands on the insulation to ensure that enough of the heat produced is available to the convertor and not lost to the environment. An analysis was performed that showed that the insulation must have a thermal conductivity of 0.005 W/m squared -K (watts per square meter per Kelvin) or better for the system to function. A multi-layer metal insulation package was designed and a prototype was fabricated and tested to investigate the feasibility of this design. The prototype did not meet the requirements; however, the improved thermal model generated using the test data will allow for a second iteration to be developed that has a much higher confidence and meets the performance requirements.

The purpose of this test was to characterize the OMH3075 Hall Effects sensor degradation for total dose response. The device samples were exposed to low dose irradiations using gamma radiation. Device parameters such as magnetic operating points, leakage currents, supply currents, and rise and fall times were investigated.

A multi-threaded software application has been developed in-house by the Ground Special Power (GSP) team at NASA Kennedy Space Center (KSC) to separately simulate and fully emulate all units that supply VDC power and battery-based power backup to multiple KSC launch ground support systems for NASA Space Launch Systems (SLS) rocket.

Microprocessor, Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) and DDRx memory devices have emerged as promising next-generation technologies that enables both high performance processing and acceleration of complex algorithms for the latest challenges in human spaceflight, autonomous vehicles and artificial intelligence (AI). The feature sets of these devices offer exponential increases to throughput, calculation capability and system autonomy when compared to legacy flight systems. NASA's Electronic Part and Packaging (NEPP) Program has conducted an investigation into the radiation susceptibility of leading edge devices and process technologies by establishing standardized test approaches. Unlike most discrete devices, these require state of the art test systems to induce specific hardware activity similar to application software, thus allowing the characterization of failure modes within the system. To best characterize the tested part, NEPP eliminates variables that may impact device performance under radiation. Simplification of remaining system-level variables leads to an improved understanding of complex computational devices and their intended applications. The failure modes and error signatures that are recorded during testing are used to determine radiation sensitivity of the semiconductor process and the microcode architecture of the design. This presentation will discuss the test methodology that NASA Electronic Parts and Packaging (NEPP) is working to establish for its microprocessor, GPU and DDRx memory test programs to provide guidance on these devices and their underlying technology, in regards to their potential usage in future space flight systems.

Reducing nonrecurring cost and shortening the build schedule for space qualified avionics has been a recurring theme in Space Industry. The NASA Goddard Space Flight Center has leverage its heritage flight qualified design and developed a portfolio of modular avionics comprised of 22 different board designs in a form factor named MUSTANG (Modular Unified Space Technology Avionics for Next Generation) that can be utilized in a variety flight applications. Since the design has no backplane, the modules can be mixed and match to meet the needed requirements. The MUSTANG form factor is sized to fill the void between 3U and 6U form factor and with flexibility to adapting the design without relaying out the boards.

Superconducting-insulating-superconducting (SIS) trilayers have been produced for Josephson Junction fabrication by thermal atomic layer deposition (ALD) processes. The trilayers are composed of alternating layers of Ti0.4N0.6/Al2O3/ Ti0.4N0.6, deposited at 450°C, in a thermal ALD reactor on Al2O3-coated silicon. The conformal nature of the ALD process provides excellent step coverage of superconducting and insulating films. The film thickness of a single ALD cycle being one mono-layer, allows us to precisely control the tunnel-barrier insulator thickness by counting the number of ALD cycles during the insulator deposition step. Tunnel-junctions with critical current 500 A/cm2 are reported. Fabrication of Josephson Junctions and progress toward development of a single-element ALD Superconducting Quantum Interference Device (SQUID) will be discussed

This presentation provides an overview of common mode conducted emissions (CMCE) measurements on power and signal cables. The presentation focuses on how such measurements directly apply to electromagnetic compatibility at the system level and provides a discussion of different techniques for performing them correctly and accurately.

Proton-induced fission of high-Z (Atomic Number) materials can produce high fluxes of high-LET (Linear Energy Transfer) ions in microelectronics. We develop methods to evaluate risks for a range of destructive and nondestructive SEE (Single-Event Effects) modes caused by this threat.

Total ionizing dose (TID) and single-event effect (SEE) room-temperature radiation test results are presented for developmental prototype 4H-SiC junction field effect transistor (JFET) semiconductor integrated circuits (ICs) that have demonstrated prolonged operation in extremely high-temperature (500 °C) environments. The devices tested demonstrated over 7 Mrad(Si) TID tolerance and no destructive SEE susceptibility.

Total ionizing dose, displacement damage dose, and single-event effect testing were performed to characterize and determine the suitability of candidate electronics for NASA space utilization. Devices tested include optoelectronics, digital, analog, bipolar devices, and FPGAs.

A series of electromagnetic simulations was conducted for the Conformal Lightweight Antenna System for Aeronautical Communications Technologies (CLAS-ACT) Program. The program designed, built, and flight tested a 14.25 GHz conformal patch array antenna for satellite communications on a T-34C airplane. Various studies were performed to evaluate the effects of antenna element spacing, array shape, signal taper, phased array pointing angle, null steering coefficients, antenna platform, and location on the airplane. This report documents the methods and some of the results of tests done over a 2 ½ year period.
