Cardiac fibrosis, in response to injury and stress, is central to a broad constellation of cardiovascular diseases. Fibrosis decreases myocardial wall compliance due to extracellular matrix (ECM) accumulation, leading to impaired systolic and diastolic function and causing arrhythmogenesis. Although some conventional drugs, such as b-blockers and renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) inhibitors, have been shown to alleviate cardiac fibrosis in clinical trials, these traditional therapies do not tend to target all the fibrosis-associated mechanisms, and do not hamper the progression of cardiac fibrosis in patients with heart failure. Polyphenols are present in vegetables, fruits, and beverages and had been proposed as attenuators of cardiac fibrosis in different models of cardiovascular diseases. Together with results found in the literature, we can show that some polyphenols exert anti-fibrotic and myocardial protective effects by mediating inflammation, oxidative stress, and fibrotic molecular signals. This review considers an overview of the mechanisms of cardiac fibrosis, illustrates their involvement in different animal models of cardiac fibrosis treated with some polyphenols and projects the future direction and therapeutic potential of polyphenols on cardiac fibrosis. Hypertension has been suggested to be mediated by immunity and inflammation. As immune system genes, killer cell immunoglobulin-like receptors ( KIRs) genes play an important role in the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases. We conducted a community population-based case-control study to analyse associations between KIR genes and hypertension. KIR genes were genotyped using sequence-specific primer polymerase chain reaction in 380 unrelated essential hypertensives and 527 normotensives. The frequencies of KIR2 DS5 gene were significantly decreased in participants with high high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs CRP) compared with participants with low hs CRP (17.02% vs 34.08%, p = .016). The presence of KIR2 DS5 gene was independently associated with decreased risk of hypertension (odds ratio = 0.62; 95% confidence interval: 0.43-0.89), after adjusted for conventional risk factors, hs CRP and other KIR genes. We found that participants with KIR2 DS5 gene had a decreased risk of hypertension compared with participants without KIR2 DS5 gene. Upon bacterial infection, one of the defense mechanisms of the host is the withdrawal of essential metal ions, in particular iron, which leads to 'nutritional immunity'. However, bacteria have evolved strategies to overcome iron starvation, for example, by stealing iron from the host or other bacteria through specific iron chelators with high binding affinity. Fortunately, these complex interactions between the host and pathogen that lead to metal homeostasis provide several opportunities for interception and, thus, allow the development of novel antibacterial compounds. In this paper, we derive a f-deformed Hamiltonian for the anti-Jaynes-Cummings (AJC) model, using a trapped ion technology. We show that f-deformed Dirac oscillator is a mathematical description of the anti-Jaynes-Cummings model in a nonlinear Kerr-like medium. We prove that one can simulate the Zitterbewegung effect in the f-deformed version of the anti-Jaynes-Cummings model. The aging brain shows biochemical and morphological changes in the dendrites of pyramidal neurons from the limbic system associated with memory loss. Prolame ( N-(3-hydroxy-1,3,5 (10)-estratrien-17β-yl)-3-hydroxypropylamine) is a non-feminizing aminoestrogen with antithrombotic activity that prevents neuronal deterioration, oxidative stress, and neuroinflammation. Our aim was to evaluate the effect of prolame on motor and cognitive processes, as well as its influence on the dendritic morphology of neurons at the CA1, CA3, and granule cells of the dentate gyrus (DG) regions of hippocampus (HP), and medium spiny neurons of the nucleus accumbens (NAcc) of aged mice. Dendritic morphology was assessed with the Golgi-Cox stain procedure followed by Sholl analysis. Prolame (60 µg/kg) was subcutaneously injected daily for 60 days in 18-month-old mice. Immediately after treatment, locomotor activity in a new environment and recognition memory using the Novel Object Recognition Task (NORT) were evaluated. Prolame-treated mice showed a significant increase in the long-term exploration quotient, but locomotor activity was not modified in comparison to control animals. Prolame-treated mice showed a significant increase in dendritic spines density and dendritic length in neurons of the CA1, CA3, and DG regions of the HP, whereas dendrites of neurons in the NAcc remained unmodified. In conclusion, prolame administration promotes hippocampal plasticity processes but not in the NAcc neurons of aged mice, thus improving long-term recognition memory. Prolame could become a pharmacological alternative to prevent or delay the brain aging process, and thus the emergence of neurodegenerative diseases that affect memory. Natural killer (NK) cells are fast-acting and versatile lymphocytes that are critical effectors of innate immunity, adaptive immunity, and placental development. Controlling NK cell function are the interactions between killer-cell immunoglobulin-like receptors (KIRs) and their HLA-A, HLA-B and HLA-C ligands. Due to the extensive polymorphism of both KIR and HLA class I, these interactions are highly diversified and specific combinations correlate with protection or susceptibility to a range of infectious, autoimmune, and reproductive disorders. Evolutionary, genetic, and functional studies are consistent with the interactions between KIR and HLA-C being the dominant control mechanism of human NK cells. In addition to their recognition of the C1 and C2 epitopes, increasing evidence points to KIR having a previously unrecognized selectivity for the peptide presented by HLA-C. This selectivity appears to be a conserved feature of activating KIR and may partly explain the slow progress made in identifying their HLA class I ligands. The peptide selectivity of KIR allows NK cells to respond, not only to changes in the surface expression of HLA-C, but also to the more subtle changes in the HLA-C peptidome, such as occur during viral infection and malignant transformation. The enantioselective total syntheses of lepadiformine marine alkaloids, azatricyclic natural products isolated from marine tunicates, were completed. These alkaloids have a unique chemical structure characterized by the trans-1-azadecalin (AB ring system) fused with the spirocyclic ring (AC ring system). Here we found that a cycloisomerization reaction from functionalized linear substrates to a 1-azaspiro[4.5]decane framework corresponding to the AC ring in lepadiformines is promoted by a catalytic amount of mercury(II) triflate (Hg(OTf)2). The total syntheses of (−)-lepadiformines A and B were achieved in 28 % and 21 % overall yields, respectively, through the novel cycloisomerization reaction. The syntheses of (+)- and (−)-lepadiformine C hydrochloride salts also enabled us to determine the absolute configuration of natural lepadiformine C. It has been found that a phenomenon of enantiodivergence occurs in lepadiformine alkaloids from a single species of marine tunicate, Clavelina moluccensis. This study aimed to evaluate the embryo development competence, the nuclear maturation and the viability of germinal vesicle (GV) and metaphase II (MII) oocytes vitrified by the Cryotop method. Cumulus–oocyte complexes were derived from bovine ovaries and three experiments were conducted. In Experiment 1, GV oocytes were vitrified and underwent in vitro maturation (IVM) or not and their nuclear maturation was assessed by orcein staining. In Experiment 2, GV oocytes and MII oocytes were vitrified or not and the viability was assessed by calcein/ethidium homodimer-1 staining. In Experiment 3, MII oocytes matured before or after vitrification were submitted to in vitro fertilization (IVF) and parthenogenetic activation (PA) in order to evaluate embryo development. No difference was found for the nuclear maturation rate in the GV group (50%) and the GV control group (67%; P = 0.23) and for viability rate (56%; 77%; P = 0.055, respectively). However, in the MII group (27%) viability was significantly lower than that of the MII control group (84%; P < 0.0001). The cleavage rate by IVF and PA was similar in the GV group and the MII group. In contrast, vitrified MII oocytes showed no capacity for blastocyst development after IVF or PA and vitrified GV oocytes were able to develop to blastocysts only after PA, but not after IVF. In conclusion, oocyte vitrification by the Cryotop method reduced the capacity for embryo development. Vitrification of GV oocytes, however, did not influence the capacity of meiotic nuclear maturation and they exhibited higher viability following vitrification at the MII stage. In this paper, we study the time evolution of the geometric phase and nonlocal correlations for a three-level atom interacting with the quantum field emerged in a nonlinear Kerr medium. We discuss the dependence of the physical quantifiers on the phase damping effect. We examine the effects of the initial state and different system parameters on the evolution of the nonlocal correlation and geometric phase with and without the phase damping effect. Furthermore, we explore the link between the geometric phase and the nonlocal correlation during the time evolution. Finally, we show that the model proposed will be very useful to avoid the phase damping effect by a proper choice of the physical parameters in the field for both cases of the initial pure and mixed states of the three-level atom. NKG2D (KLRK1) is a C-type lectin receptor present on natural killer (NK) cells, γδ, CD8+ and CD4+ T cells. Upon ligand binding, NKG2D mediates activatory and co-stimulatory signals to NK cells and activated CD4+ T cells, respectively. Polymorphisms in NKG2D predispose to infectious diseases, cancer, transplantation and autoimmune disorders. We studied the influence of this NK receptor polymorphism on predisposition to and modification of the disease phenotype in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Eight different single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) in the NKG2 gene were genotyped in 236 patients with RA and 187 controls using Taqman 5' nuclease assays. NKG2D genotype/allele frequency did not differ between patients and controls. Subgroup analysis showed that the frequency of A allele of NKG2D9 and T allele of NKG2D10 was significantly higher in patients with deformities (a marker of severe disease) [11 versus 5%, Pc = 0·03, odds ratio (OR) = 2·44, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1·09-5·98 and 10 versus 4%, Pc = 0·04, OR = 2·45, 95% CI = 1·05-6·39, respectively], while the frequency of alleles G of NKG2D9 and A of NKG2D10 was greater in patients without deformities (Pc = 0·03, OR = 0·41, 95% CI = 0·17-0·91 and Pc = 0·04, OR = 0·41, 95% CI = 0·16-0·96). Similar trends of association were observed with deforming phenotype of RA in female patients and deforming young onset RA subgroups. Haplotype analysis revealed that the frequency of haplotype G-C-A-G-A-T-C-C was higher in patients than in controls (12 versus 8%, P = 0·04, OR = 1·61, 95% CI = 1·01-2·55), suggesting that it may predispose to RA. The increasing complexity of modern radiation therapy planning and delivery challenges traditional prescriptive quality management (QM) methods, such as many of those included in guidelines published by organizations such as the AAPM, ASTRO, ACR, ESTRO, and IAEA. These prescriptive guidelines have traditionally focused on monitoring all aspects of the functional performance of radiotherapy (RT) equipment by comparing parameters against tolerances set at strict but achievable values. Many errors that occur in radiation oncology are not due to failures in devices and software; rather they are failures in workflow and process. A systematic understanding of the likelihood and clinical impact of possible failures throughout a course of radiotherapy is needed to direct limit QM resources efficiently to produce maximum safety and quality of patient care. Task Group 100 of the AAPM has taken a broad view of these issues and has developed a framework for designing QM activities, based on estimates of the probability of identified failures and their clinical outcome through the RT planning and delivery process. The Task Group has chosen a specific radiotherapy process required for "intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT)" as a case study. The goal of this work is to apply modern risk-based analysis techniques to this complex RT process in order to demonstrate to the RT community that such techniques may help identify more effective and efficient ways to enhance the safety and quality of our treatment processes. The task group generated by consensus an example quality management program strategy for the IMRT process performed at the institution of one of the authors. This report describes the methodology and nomenclature developed, presents the process maps, FMEAs, fault trees, and QM programs developed, and makes suggestions on how this information could be used in the clinic. Myocardial dysfunction is an important manifestation of sepsis. Previous studies suggest that melatonin is protective against sepsis. In addition, activation of the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (Akt) signaling pathway has been reported to be beneficial in sepsis. However, the role of PI3K/Akt signaling in the protective effect of melatonin against sepsis-induced myocardial dysfunction remains unclear. Here, LY294002, a PI3K inhibitor, was used to investigate the role of PI3K/Akt signaling in mediating the effects of melatonin on sepsis-induced myocardial injury. Cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) surgery was used to establish a rat model of sepsis. Melatonin was administrated to rats intraperitoneally (30 mg/kg). The survival rate, measures of myocardial injury and cardiac performance, serum lactate dehydrogenase level, inflammatory cytokine levels, oxidative stress level, and the extent of myocardial apoptosis were assessed. The results suggest that melatonin administration after CLP surgery improved survival rates and cardiac function, attenuated myocardial injury and apoptosis, and decreased the serum lactate dehydrogenase level. Melatonin decreased the production of the inflammatory cytokines TNF-α, IL-1β, and HMGB1, increased anti-oxidant enzyme activity, and decreased the expression of markers of oxidative damage. Levels of phosphorylated Akt (p-Akt), unphosphorylated Akt (Akt), Bcl-2, and Bax were measured by Western blot. Melatonin increased p-Akt levels, which suggests Akt pathway activation. Melatonin induced higher Bcl-2 expression and lower Bax expression, suggesting inhibition of apoptosis. All protective effects of melatonin were abolished by LY294002, the PI3K inhibitor. Although best known for their [3+2]-dipolar cycloaddition reactivity and use in the preparation of isoxazolines and isoxazolidines, nitrones are versatile reagents that undergo a variety of transformations for the synthesis of a diverse array of heterocyclic compounds. The breadth of heterocycle synthesis using nitrone reagents includes: 1) stepwise [3+3]-cycloaddition reactions of nitrones with vinyl diazoacetates, transition-metal-coordinated cycloisomerization intermediates, trimethylene methanes, and cyclopropane diesters to form dihydro- and tetrahydro-1,2-oxazines; 2) internal redox cyclization reactions of alkyne-tethered nitrones to provide access to azabicyclooctanes, isoindoles, aminoindanones, and isoquinolones; 3) electrocyclizations of in situ generated N-allenylnitrones to form pyridines and azetidine- N-oxides, as well as metal-catalyzed cyclizations and rearrangements of nitrones to form azepine- N-oxides, spirocyclic isoxazolines, and α,β-epoxyimines; and 4) the use of [3+2]-cycloaddition reactions of nitrones to trigger cascade reactions for the formation of tetrahydrooxazepines, dihydrocarbazoles, and benzoindolizines. Objectives: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disorder characterized by persistent synovitis, ultimately leading to cartilage and bone degeneration. Natural Killer cells and CD28 null T-cells are suspected as role players in RA pathogenesis. These cells are similar in feature and function, as they both exert their cytotoxic effect via Killer Cell Immunoglobulin- Like Receptors (KIR) on their surface. KIR genes have either an inhibitory or activating effect depending on their intracytoplasmic structure. Herein we genotyped 16 KIR genes, 3 pseudo genes and 6 HLA class І genes as their corresponding ligands in RA patients and control subjects. Methods: In this case-control study, KIR and HLA genes were genotyped in 400 RA patients and 372 matched healthy controls using sequence-specific primers (SSP-PCR). Differences in the frequency of genes and haplotypes were determined by χ² test. Results: KIR2DL2, 2DL5a, 2DL5b and activating KIR: KIR2DS5 and 3DS1 were all protective against RA. KIR2DL5 removal from a full Inhibitory KIR haplotype converted the mild protection (OR = 0.56) to a powerful predisposition to RA (OR = 16.47). Inhibitory haplotype No. 7 comprising KIR2DL5 in the absence of KIR2DL1 and KIR2DL3 confers a 14-fold protective effect against RA. Killer cell immunoglobulin-like receptors ( KIRs) are a diverse family of activating and inhibitory receptors expressed on natural killer ( NK) cells and T cells, the genes of which show extreme polymorphism. Some KIRs bind to human leucocyte antigen ( HLA) class I subgroups, and genetic interactions between KIR genes and their ligand HLA have been shown to be associated with several autoimmune diseases. The present study aimed to investigate whether the combinations of KIR genes and HLA- Cw ligands associate with the susceptibility of systemic lupus erythematosus ( SLE). Polymerase chain reaction using sequence-specific primers was used to determine the genotypes of KIR genes and HLA- Cw alleles. We found that the frequencies of HLA- Cw07 were statistically significantly higher in the patient group than those in the control group ( P = 0·009). KIR2 DS1+ HLA− CwLys was more common in subjects with SLE compared to control subjects ( P = 0·015). In addition, the frequency of KIR2 DS1 was increased in SLE when KIR2 DL1/ HLA- Cw are absent, and the difference was significant ( P = 0·001). We present a perturbative analysis of a Rabi model where the coupling between the quantized single-mode electromagnetic field and the two-level atom depends on the field intensity. Upon modeling the matter-radiation coupling through the Holstein-Primakoff realization of algebra su(1,1), we evaluate first- and second-order eigenenergies and eigenstates both in the weak-coupling regime (atom transition frequency smaller than the coupling strength) and in the strong-coupling regime. In the first case, among various effects, we observe a quadratic dependence on the photon number of energy eigenvalues and the possible formation of level doublets. In the strong-coupling case, the perturbative analysis becomes considerably complex due to the su(1,1)-valued form of the unperturbed Hamiltonian. Background Juvenile idiopathic arthritis ( JIA) has three major onset types with widely varying clinical features: systemic, polyarticular and pauciarticular. We assessed natural killer ( NK) cell function and killer cell immunoglobulin-like receptor ( KIR) genotypes in patients with different JIA subtypes. Methods Peripheral blood samples from 72 children with active JIA (systemic, 25; polyarticular, 24; pauciarticular, 23) and 25 controls were used for flow cytometric assessments of NK cell count, cytotoxicity, perforin, granzyme B, interferon ( IFN)-γ and tumour necrosis factor ( TNF)-α. Samples from 220 children with JIA (systemic, 84; polyarticular, 72; pauciarticular, 64) and 150 controls were used for KIR2 DS2, KIR2 DS4, KIR3 DS1, KIR2 DL1, KIR2 DL2, KIR2 DL3 and KIR3 DL1 typing by polymerase chain reaction with sequence-specific oligonucleotide probes. Results Compared with the controls, the patients with systemic JIA showed lower NK cell counts, cytotoxicity and perforin and granzyme B expression (p < 0.05), while the patients with pauci- and polyarticular JIA showed higher perforin and granzyme B expression (p < 0.05). NK cells produced higher level of TNF-α while lower level of IFN-γ in the pauci- and polyarticular JIA groups than in the systemic JIA group (p < 0.05). No significant differences in KIR gene frequencies were found between the JIA subgroups and healthy controls, except for the positive frequency and locus frequency of KIR2 DS4, which were lower in the systemic JIA group. Conclusions Compared with poly- and pauciarticular JIA, systemic JIA is associated with decreased NK cell function, more IFN-γ and less TNF-α secretion of NK cell and lower KIR2 DS4 frequency. Amides are a class of highly stable and readily available compounds. The amide functional group constitutes a class of powerful directing/activating and protecting group for CC bond formation. Tertiary tert-alkylamine, including 1-azaspirocycle is a key structural feature found in many bioactive natural products and pharmaceuticals. The transformation of amides into tert-alkylamines generally requires several steps. In this paper, we report the full details of the first general method for the direct transformation of tertiary lactams/amides into tert-alkylamines. The method is based on in situ activation of amide with triflic anhydride/2,6-di- tert-butyl-4-methylpyridine (DTBMP), followed by successive addition of two organometallic reagents of the same or different kinds to form two CC bonds. Both alkyl and functionalized organometallic reagents and enolates can be used as the nucleophiles. The method displayed excellent 1,2- and good 1,3-asymmetric induction. Construction of 1-azaspirocycles from lactams required only two steps or even one-step by direct spiroannelation of lactams. Background: Natural Killer Cells (NK) play an important role in detection and elimination of virus-infected, damaged or cancer cells. NK cell function is guided by expression of Killer Immunoglobulin-like Receptors (KIRs) and contributed to by the cytokine milieu. KIR molecules are grouped on NK cells into stimulatory and inhibitory KIR haplotypes A and B, through which NKs sense and tolerate HLA self-antigens or up-regulate the NK-cytotoxic response to cells with altered HLA self-antigens, damaged by viruses or tumours. We have previously described increased numbers of NK and NK-related subsets in association with sIL-2R cytokine serum levels in BELFAST octo/ nonagenarians. We hypothesised that changes in KIR A and B haplotype gene frequencies could explain the increased cytokine profiles and NK compartments previously described in Belfast Elderly Longitudinal Free-living Aging STudy (BELFAST) octo/nonagenarians, who show evidence of ageing well. Results: In the BELFAST study, 24% of octo/nonagenarians carried the KIR A haplotype and 76% KIR B haplotype with no differences for KIR A haplogroup frequency between male or female subjects (23% v 24%; p=0.88) or for KIR B haplogroup (77% v 76%; p=0.99). Octo/nonagenarian KIR A haplotype carriers showed increased NK numbers and percentage compared to Group B KIR subjects (p=0.003; p=0.016 respectively). There were no KIR A/ B haplogroup-associated changes for related CD57+CD8 (high or low) subsets. Using logistic regression, KIR B carriers were predicted to have higher IL-12 cytokine levels compared to KIR A carriers by about 3% (OR 1.03, confidence limits CI 0.99-1.09; p=0.027) and 14% higher levels for TGF-β (active), a cytokine with an anti-inflammatory role, (OR 1.14, confidence limits CI 0.99-1.09; p=0.002). Conclusion: In this observational study, BELFAST octo/nonagenarians carrying KIR A haplotype showed higher NK cell numbers and percentage compared to KIR B carriers. Conversely, KIR B haplotype carriers, with genes encoding for activating KIRs, showed a tendency for higher serum pro-inflammatory cytokines compared to KIR A carriers. While the findings in this study should be considered exploratory they may serve to stimulate debate about the immune signatures of those who appear to age slowly and who represent a model for good quality survivor-hood. The tillering process which determines the field stand as well as the ultimate millable canes at harvest is regulated by several internal factors viz., hormones, nature of the genotypes and environment prevailing during tillering. The senescence percentage of tillers differs based on their time of production. Tillers produced beyond 100 days after planting are prone for senescence. The indole acetic acid (IAA), Gibberellic acid (GA) and abscissic acid (ABA) content varied in live and senescing tillers with senescing tillers recording high level of ABA, while in live tillers it was not detected. Higher cell membrane injury, increased lipid peroxidation product (Malondialdehyde) and decreased ascorbic acid content implied the catabolic activity in the senescing tillers resulting in complete collapse and death of the tillers prematurely. The presence of Burkholderia, Cupriavidus, and Ralstonia species in northeastern Mexico was investigated. An analysis of the root surrounding soil from different agricultural plants led to the isolation of Burkholderia and Cupriavidus species but no Ralstonia strains. Most Cupriavidus species were unknown and grouped into two clusters according to ARDRA profiles. The 16S rRNA sequence analysis showed that the Cupriavidus isolates were highly related among them and with different Cupriavidus species with validated names. However, SDS-PAGE profiles were distinct among the different ARDRA profiles and to other Cupriavidus species examined, suggesting new species in the genus. This shows that Cupriavidus is more widely associated with plants than previously appreciated. The BCC isolate was 99% similar to B. cenocepacia by recA sequence analysis. Additionally, most Cupriavidus strains from the two largest groups grew on media containing up to 0.1 mg/ml of copper, 10.0 mg/ml arsenic and 1.0 mg/ml zinc. Management of complex thyroid nodules (CTN) is a common dilemma due to their high prevalence and frequent nondiagnostic fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC). In order to know the rate of malignancy, we reviewed our experience about histopathologic diagnosis of CTN with nondiagnostic FNAC, and we analyzed if cytological variants of nondiagnostic FNAC indicated different histopathologic outcomes. We conducted a review of 927 consecutive aspirations performed between 2003 and 2008. We selected patients without history of radiation, with echographic CTN, and nondiagnostic FNAC, who underwent surgery. We analyzed histopathologic results and compared patients with benign and malignant nodules, and searched for differences between patients with cystic changes in FNAC (C-FNAC), and patients with acellular or only bloody FNAC (A-FNAC). Thirty-six patients were included (mean age 45.7 ± 13 years; 30 females). Four patients had malignant nodules; all were papillary carcinomas. Patients with benign nodules had a similar profile to patients with malignant nodules. Patients with C-FNAC ( n = 21) were younger (41.3 ± 12.6 vs. 51.8 ± 11.2 years; P < 0.02), had more lymphocytic thyroiditis (33.3 vs. 0%; P < 0.02), a slightly higher rate of carcinoma in the nodule (14.3 vs. 6.6%; P: ns), and also of papillary microcarcinoma outside the nodule (9.6 vs. 0%; P: ns) than patients with A-FNAC. In conclusion, we report an 11.1% malignancy rate in CTN with nondiagnostic FNAC. Nodules with C-FNAC variant had a slightly higher rate of malignancy than A-FNAC, which may be in relation with younger age and higher prevalence of lymphocytic thyroiditis in this group of patients. After entry into animal cells, most viruses hijack essential components involved in gene expression. This is the case of poliovirus, which abrogates cellular translation soon after virus internalization. Abrogation is achieved by cleavage of both eIF4GI and eIF4GII by the viral protease 2A. Apart from the interference of poliovirus with cellular protein synthesis, other gene expression steps such as RNA and protein trafficking between nucleus and cytoplasm are also altered. Poliovirus 2Apro is capable of hydrolyzing components of the nuclear pore, thus preventing an efficient antiviral response by the host cell. Here, we compare in detail poliovirus 2Apro with other viral proteins (from picornaviruses and unrelated families) as regard to their activity on key host factors that control gene expression. It is possible that future analyses to determine the cellular proteins targeted by 2Apro will uncover other cellular functions ablated by poliovirus infection. Further understanding of the cellular proteins hydrolyzed by 2Apro will add further insight into the molecular mechanism by which poliovirus and other viruses interact with the host cell. A Software-Defined Radio (SDR) should theoretically receive any modulated frequency channel in the (un)licensed spectrum, and guarantee top performance with energy savings, while still being integrated in a digital CMOS technology. This paper demonstrates a practical 0.1-5 GHz front-end implementation for such an SDR concept, including receiver and local oscillator (LO), with only 2-mm² core area occupation in a 45-nm CMOS process. This scalable radio uses shunt-shunt feedback LNAs, a passive mixer with enhanced out-of-band IIP3, and a fifth order low-area 0.5-20 MHz baseband filter. LO quadrature signals are generated from a dual-VCO 4-10 GHz fractional-N PLL. With noise figure between 2.3 dB and 6.5 dB, out-of-band IIP3 between -3 dBm and -10 dBm, and total power consumption between 59 and 115 mW from a 1.1-V supply voltage, the presented prototype favorably compares with state-of-the-art dedicated radios while enabling, for the first time, wideband reconfigurable performance and energy scalability. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a global health concern. Vascular dysfunction is an aspect of CVD, and novel treatments targeting vascular physiology are necessary. In the endothelium, eNOS regulates vasodilation and mitochondrial function; both are disrupted in CVD. (–)-Epicatechin, a botanical compound known for its vasodilatory, eNOS, and mitochondrial-stimulating properties, is a potential therapy in those with CVD. We hypothesized that (–)-epicatechin would support eNOS activity and mitochondrial respiration, leading to improved vasoreactivity in a thermoneutral-derived rat model of vascular dysfunction. We housed Wistar rats at room temperature or in thermoneutral conditions for a total of 16 week and treated them with 1mg/kg body weight (–)-epicatechin for 15 day. Vasoreactivity, eNOS activity, and mitochondrial respiration were measured, in addition to the protein expression of upstream cellular signaling molecules including AMPK and CaMKII. We observed a significant improvement of vasodilation in those housed in thermoneutrality and treated with (–)-epicatechin (p < 0.05), as well as dampened mitochondrial respiration (p < 0.05). AMPK and CaMKIIα and β expression were lessened with (–)-epicatechin treatment in those housed at thermoneutrality (p < 0.05). The opposite was observed with animals housed at room temperature supplemented with (–)-epicatechin.
