- Abstract
Teacher learning to enact desirable yet knotty teaching practices is a complex challenge that requires innovative support. Most materials intended to support professional learning fall short and do not leverage the benefits of modern technologies to address historic barriers at school, district, and broader systemic levels. We provide a synthetic literature review of teacher learning, identify impediments, and suggest a new, technology-enabled approach to the co-design of teacher collaborative learning materials enabled by open technologies, a revolutionary mindset enabled by open technologies. We frame the Open Guidebook Approach (OGA) in terms of five values: collaboration, practicality, continuous improvement, accessibility, and adaptability. We illustrate OGA with an ongoing project, called "Making Meaning," to support teachers learning to enact equitable practices, drawing on concepts, indicators, and observation rubrics from the Classroom Assessment of Sociocultural Interactions. Supporting teachers to transform their teaching is our objective, OGA via open technologies is the innovative means, and Making Meaning illustrates our arguments. We conclude with recommendations and ongoing questions.

272. Basic Needs Security among Washington College Students. Washington Student Experience Survey: Findings Report

Washington has made some strides in recent years toward increasing awareness and state support of students' basic needs but has lacked state and regional information to drive larger-scale policies, programs, and investments to address the attainment barriers associated with basic needs insecurity. State and regional data on unmet basic needs can help Washington more effectively tackle basic needs barriers to postsecondary attainment by: (1) increasing awareness of the true scale of basic needs insecurity, particularly in communities and education sectors where it may be "invisible" or counter to popular perception; (2) pointing to disparate impacts in particular student populations through the lenses of student status, race/ethnicity, veteran, or employment status, etc.; and (3) serving as an advocacy tool for data-driven solutions on campus, regional, and state levels. To address this information gap, in 2021 a statewide Basic Needs Data Work Group proposed a coordinated basic needs survey across Washington higher education institutions. The Washington Student Experience survey reported on here identified considerable levels of basic needs insecurity among college students across the state. In addition, the survey highlighted significant disparities for certain student groups, especially American Indian/Alaska Native students, Black/African-American students, low-income students, students with disability, students with dependents, and former foster youth. 274. Gadugi: Reclaiming Native American Education through a Culturally Reflective Pedagogy

The history of American Indian education has been one of colonialism and cultural erasure. From the first missionary educators who first came to the Indigenous nations of the Americas well into the twentieth century, Native children have been subjected to physical, mental and emotional abuse. This paper examines one program's efforts at reclaiming the educational process for American Indian children and youth through an immersive, culturally relevant and reflective pedagogy. The Gadugi Partnership is a dual enrollment collaboration between Appalachian State University and Cherokee High School that endeavors to use traditional Cherokee values and practices within the classroom to promote Cherokee culture, history, and language. With particular focus on the ancient Cherokee ideal of gadugi--service--I argue that this model of education holds promise for making formal education responsive to the needs of Cherokee youth, as well as allowing them the chance to practice and promote this ideal within their community. The Cherokee people have always valued education; it is time education value the Cherokee people. I will argue that the methods and approach of the Gadugi Partnership is a step in that important direction.

The existence of a plateau in the short-duration tail of the observed distribution of cosmological Long-soft Gamma Ray Bursts (LGRBs) has been argued as the first direct evidence of Collapsars. A similar plateau in the short-duration tail of the observed duration distribution of Short-hard Gamma Ray Bursts (SGRBs) has been suggested as evidence of compact binary mergers. We present an equally plausible alternative interpretation for this evidence, which is purely statistical. Specifically, we show that the observed plateau in the short-duration tail of the duration distribution of LGRBs can naturally occur in the statistical distributions of strictly positive physical quantities, exacerbated by the effects of mixing with the duration distribution of SGRBs, observational selection effects, and data aggregation (e.g., binning) methodologies. The observed plateau in the short-duration tail of the observed distributions of SGRBs can similarly result from a combination of sample incompleteness and inhomogeneous binning of data. We further confirm the impact of these factors on the observation of a plateau in the duration distributions of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) through extensive numerical Monte Carlo simulations. The inner hundred parsecs of the Milky Way hosts the nearest supermassive black hole, largest reservoir of dense gas, greatest stellar density, hundreds of massive main and post main sequence stars, and the highest volume density of supernovae in the Galaxy. As the nearest environment in which it is possible to simultaneously observe many of the extreme processes shaping the Universe, it is one of the most well-studied regions in astrophysics. Due to its proximity, we can study the center of our Galaxy on scales down to a few hundred AU, a hundred times better than in similar Local Group galaxies and thousands of times better than in the nearest active galaxies. The Galactic Center (GC) is therefore of outstanding astrophysical interest. However, in spite of intense observational work over the past decades, there are still fundamental things unknown about the GC. JWST has the unique capability to provide us with the necessary, game-changing data. In this White Paper, we advocate for a JWST NIRCam survey that aims at solving central questions, that we have identified as a community: i) the 3D structure and kinematics of gas and stars; ii) ancient star formation and its relation with the overall history of the Milky Way, as well as recent star formation and its implications for the overall energetics of our galaxy's nucleus; and iii) the (non-)universality of star formation and the stellar initial mass function. We advocate for a large-area, multi-epoch, multi-wavelength NIRCam survey of the inner 100\,pc of the Galaxy in the form of a Treasury GO JWST Large Program that is open to the community. We describe how this survey will derive the physical and kinematic properties of ~10,000,000 stars, how this will solve the key unknowns and provide a valuable resource for the community with long-lasting legacy value., Comment: This White Paper will be updated when required (e.g. new authors joining, editing of content). Context. Multi-wavelength studies of galaxies and galactic nuclei allow us to build a relatively more complete picture of the interstellar medium (ISM), especially in the dusty regions of starburst galaxies. An understanding of the physical processes in nearby galaxies can assist in the study of more distant sources at higher redshifts, which cannot be resolved. Aims. We aimed to use observations presented in the first part of this series of papers to model the physical conditions of the ISM in the nuclear region of NGC 253, in order to obtain primary parameters such as gas densities and metallicities. From the created model we further calculated secondary parameters such as gas masses of the different phases, and estimated the fraction of [C II] 158 um from the different phases, which allowed us to probe the nuclear star-formation rate. Methods. To compare theory with our observations we used MULTIGRIS, a probabilistic tool that determines probabilities for certain ISM parameters from a grid of Cloudy models together with a set of spectroscopic lines. Results. We find that the hypothetical active galactic nucleus within NGC 253 has only a minor impact compared to the starburst on the heating of the ISM as probed by the observed lines. We characterise the ISM and obtain parameters such as a solar metallicity, a mean density of ~230cm-3 , an ionisation parameter of log U = -3, and an age of the nuclear cluster of ~2 Myr. Furthermore, we estimate the masses of the ionised (3.8 x 10^6 M_sol ), neutral atomic (9.1 x 10^6 M_sol ), and molecular (2.0 x 10^8 M_sol ) gas phases as well as the dust mass (1.8 x 10^6 M_sol ) in the nucleus of NGC 253., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A; 15 pages, 10 Figures, 6 Tables

Generative Artificial Intelligence is set to revolutionize healthcare delivery by transforming traditional patient care into a more personalized, efficient, and proactive process. Chatbots, serving as interactive conversational models, will probably drive this patient-centered transformation in healthcare. Through the provision of various services, including diagnosis, personalized lifestyle recommendations, and mental health support, the objective is to substantially augment patient health outcomes, all the while mitigating the workload burden on healthcare providers. The life-critical nature of healthcare applications necessitates establishing a unified and comprehensive set of evaluation metrics for conversational models. Existing evaluation metrics proposed for various generic large language models (LLMs) demonstrate a lack of comprehension regarding medical and health concepts and their significance in promoting patients' well-being. Moreover, these metrics neglect pivotal user-centered aspects, including trust-building, ethics, personalization, empathy, user comprehension, and emotional support. The purpose of this paper is to explore state-of-the-art LLM-based evaluation metrics that are specifically applicable to the assessment of interactive conversational models in healthcare. Subsequently, we present an comprehensive set of evaluation metrics designed to thoroughly assess the performance of healthcare chatbots from an end-user perspective. These metrics encompass an evaluation of language processing abilities, impact on real-world clinical tasks, and effectiveness in user-interactive conversations. Self-assembled InAs quantum dots (QDs), which have long hole-spin coherence times and are amenable to optical control schemes, have long been explored as building blocks for qubit architectures. One such design consists of vertically stacking two QDs to create a quantum dot molecule (QDM). The two dots can be resonantly tuned to form "molecule-like" coupled hole states from the hybridization of hole states otherwise localized in each respective dot. Furthermore, spin-mixing of the hybridized states in dots offset along their stacking direction enables qubit rotation to be driven optically, allowing for an all-optical qubit control scheme. Increasing the magnitude of this spin mixing is important for optical quantum control protocols. To enhance the tunnel coupling and spin-mixing across the dots, we introduce Bi in the GaAs inter-dot barrier. Previously, we showed how to model InAs/GaBiAs in an atomistic tight-binding formalism, and how the dot energy levels are affected by the alloy. In this paper, we discuss the lowering of the tunnel barrier, which results in a three fold increase of hole tunnel coupling strength in the presence of a 7% alloy. Additionally, we show how an asymmetric strain between the two dots caused by the alloy shifts the resonance. Deception, which includes leading cyber-attackers astray with false information, has shown to be an effective method of thwarting cyber-attacks. There has been little investigation of the effect of probing action costs on adversarial decision-making, despite earlier studies on deception in cybersecurity focusing primarily on variables like network size and the percentage of honeypots utilized in games. Understanding human decision-making when prompted with choices of various costs is essential in many areas such as in cyber security. In this paper, we will use a deception game (DG) to examine different costs of probing on adversarial decisions. To achieve this we utilized an IBLT model and a delayed feedback mechanism to mimic knowledge of human actions. Our results were taken from an even split of deception and no deception to compare each influence. It was concluded that probing was slightly taken less as the cost of probing increased. The proportion of attacks stayed relatively the same as the cost of probing increased. Although a constant cost led to a slight decrease in attacks. Overall, our results concluded that the different probing costs do not have an impact on the proportion of attacks whereas it had a slightly noticeable impact on the proportion of probing.

The activity of central supermassive black holes might affect the alignment of galaxy spin axes with respect to the closest cosmic filaments. We exploit the SAMI Galaxy Survey to study possible relations between black hole activity and the spin-filament alignments of stars and ionised gas separately. To explore the impact of instantaneous black hole activity, active galaxies are selected according to emission-line diagnostics. Central stellar velocity dispersion ($\sigma_c$) is used as a proxy for black hole mass and its integrated activity. We find evidence for the gas spin-filament alignments to be influenced by AGN, with Seyfert galaxies showing a stronger perpendicular alignment at fixed bulge mass with respect to galaxies where ionisation is consequence of low-ionizaition nuclear emission-line regions (LINERs) or old stellar populations (retired galaxies). On the other hand, the greater perpendicular tendency for the stellar spin-filament alignments of high-bulge mass galaxies is dominated by retired galaxies. Stellar alignments show a stronger correlation with $\sigma_c$ compared to the gas alignments. We confirm that bulge mass ($M_{bulge}$) is the primary parameter of correlation for both stellar and gas spin-filament alignments (with no residual dependency left for $\sigma_c$), while $\sigma_c$ is the most important property for secular star formation quenching (with no residual dependency left for $M_{bulge}$). These findings indicate that $M_{bulge}$ and $\sigma_c$ are the most predictive parameters of two different galaxy evolution processes, suggesting mergers trigger spin-filament alignment flips and integrated black hole activity drives star formation quenching., Comment: 20 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Research progress in quantum computing has, thus far, focused on a narrow set of application domains. Expanding the suite of quantum application domains is vital for the discovery of new software toolchains and architectural abstractions. In this work, we unlock a new class of applications ripe for quantum computing research -- computational cognitive modeling. Cognitive models are critical to understanding and replicating human intelligence. Our work connects computational cognitive models to quantum computer architectures for the first time. We release QUATRO, a collection of quantum computing applications from cognitive models. The development and execution of QUATRO shed light on gaps in the quantum computing stack that need to be closed to ease programming and drive performance. Among several contributions, we propose and study ideas pertaining to quantum cloud scheduling (using data from gate- and annealing-based quantum computers), parallelization, and more. In the long run, we expect our research to lay the groundwork for more versatile quantum computer systems in the future.

In active materials, uncoordinated internal stresses lead to emergent long-range flows. An understanding of how the behavior of active materials depends on mesoscopic (hydrodynamic) parameters is developing, but there remains a gap in knowledge concerning how hydrodynamic parameters depend on the properties of microscopic elements. In this work, we combine experiments and multiscale modeling to relate the structure and dynamics of active nematics composed of biopolymer filaments and molecular motors to their microscopic properties, in particular motor processivity, speed, and valency. We show that crosslinking of filaments by both motors and passive crosslinkers not only augments the contributions to nematic elasticity from excluded volume effects but dominates them. By altering motor kinetics we show that a competition between motor speed and crosslinking results in a nonmonotonic dependence of nematic flow on motor speed. By modulating passive filament crosslinking we show that energy transfer into nematic flow is in large part dictated by crosslinking. Thus motor proteins both generate activity and contribute to nematic elasticity. Our results provide new insights for rationally engineering active materials.

We present Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (Fermi-GBM) and Swift Burst Alert Telescope (Swift-BAT) searches for gamma-ray/X-ray counterparts to gravitational wave (GW) candidate events identified during the third observing run of the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo detectors. Using Fermi-GBM on-board triggers and sub-threshold gamma-ray burst (GRB) candidates found in the Fermi-GBM ground analyses, the Targeted Search and the Untargeted Search, we investigate whether there are any coincident GRBs associated with the GWs. We also search the Swift-BAT rate data around the GW times to determine whether a GRB counterpart is present. No counterparts are found. Using both the Fermi-GBM Targeted Search and the Swift-BAT search, we calculate flux upper limits and present joint upper limits on the gamma-ray luminosity of each GW. Given these limits, we constrain theoretical models for the emission of gamma-rays from binary black hole mergers.

We present a measurement of gravitational lensing over 1500 deg$^2$ of the Southern sky using SPT-3G temperature data at 95 and 150 GHz taken in 2018. The lensing amplitude relative to a fiducial Planck 2018 $\Lambda$CDM cosmology is found to be $1.020\pm0.060$, excluding instrumental and astrophysical systematic uncertainties. We conduct extensive systematic and null tests to check the robustness of the lensing measurements, and report a minimum-variance combined lensing power spectrum over angular multipoles of $50

We present ground and space-based photometric observations of TOI-270 (L231-32), a system of three transiting planets consisting of one super-Earth and two sub-Neptunes discovered by TESS around a bright (K-mag=8.25) M3V dwarf. The planets orbit near low-order mean-motion resonances (5:3 and 2:1), and are thus expected to exhibit large transit timing variations (TTVs). Following an extensive observing campaign using 8 different observatories between 2018 and 2020, we now report a clear detection of TTVs for planets c and d, with amplitudes of $\sim$10 minutes and a super-period of $\sim$3 years, as well as significantly refined estimates of the radii and mean orbital periods of all three planets. Dynamical modeling of the TTVs alone puts strong constraints on the mass ratio of planets c and d and on their eccentricities. When incorporating recently published constraints from radial velocity observations, we obtain masses of $M_{\mathrm{b}}=1.48\pm0.18\,M_\oplus$, $M_{c}=6.20\pm0.31\,M_\oplus$ and $M_{\mathrm{d}}=4.20\pm0.16\,M_\oplus$ for planets b, c and d, respectively. We also detect small, but significant eccentricities for all three planets : $e_\mathrm{b} =0.0167\pm0.0084$, $e_{c} =0.0044\pm0.0006$ and $e_{d} = 0.0066\pm0.0020$. Our findings imply an Earth-like rocky composition for the inner planet, and Earth-like cores with an additional He/H$_2$O atmosphere for the outer two. TOI-270 is now one of the best-constrained systems of small transiting planets, and it remains an excellent target for atmospheric characterization., Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures
