Calcium and phosphate changes, besides their involvement in bone disease, have been claimed to also be involved in the increased vascular morbidity and mortality of dialysis patients. Even after the recent advances of therapeutic options, their control still remains a challenging problem. Dialysis treatment is a basic approach to the control of these two electrolytes. Calcium control by dialysis is mainly dependent on its mass balance, which is variably influenced by the calcium concentration difference between blood and dialysis solutions (either dialysate or infusion fluids) and by the duration of the treatment. There is no full agreement on the ideal calcium concentration in dialysis fluids, since this choice is also mostly influenced by the concomitant medical therapy. However, there is some consensus in suggesting a lower calcium concentration in standard hemodialysis (HD) treatment (1.25-1.50 mmol/l) than in dialysis treatments characterized by high convective transport. In peritoneal dialysis, calcium balance is affected by its blood dialysate concentration difference and dialysate glucose concentration, with ideal calcium concentration probably being >1.25 and <1.75 (which are the most commonly used concentrations). Phosphate dialysis balance is also a critical and challenging problem, since the possibility to reach an always desired null or possibly negative balance relies on this. Even though some increased phosphate removal can be obtained with the highest efficiency techniques, such as hemodiafiltration as compared with traditional HD, the most impacting factor still remains the duration of dialysis treatment. The calcium sensing receptor (CaSR) is expressed in cells secreting calcium-regulating hormones, in cells involved in calcium transport and in many other tissues, with an as yet not completely defined role. In parathyroid cells, the CaSR stimulation inhibits parathyroid hormone (PTH) secretion, synthesis and parathyroid cell proliferation. Cinacalcet belongs to calcimimetic type II compounds that can interact with CaSR, increasing its affinity for calcium. Clinical studies have proved cinacalcet to be effective in reducing calcium and PTH levels in primary hyperparathyroidism and in reducing PTH, calcium and phosphate in patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism owing to chronic renal failure, with a relatively safe profile, the only reported adverse events being hypocalcaemia and gastrointestinal symptoms. However, though calcimimetics do represent a real advancement in the field of the treatment of PTH secretion disturbances, there is a need for clinical trials, which should aim to demonstrate that a better control of biochemical parameters is also matched with better clinical outcomes.

HCV RNA is gaining greater consideration as a principal target for newer HCV antivirals because its destruction has the potential of eliminating the virus. These newer antivirals include deoxyribozymes (Dz), which are small single-stranded DNA molecules that cleave homologous RNA targets. Using a liver cell model containing functional genomic-length HCV-1b RNA we tested whether 2'-O-methyl-modified Dz, designed to recognize a highly-conserved RNA sequence located within the core-E1 coding region, could recognize and cleave its target sequence in the structural context of a functional HCV RNA molecule. Dz858-4-OMe contains four 2'-O-methyl nucleotide derivatives consecutively located on the distal ends of its two annealing arms. Intracellular HCV RNA, core protein and HCV antigen expression were reduced by 63%, 87% and 84%, respectively, when HCV RNA was challenged 6 h post-transfection with Dz858-4-OMe. The observed reduction of intracellular HCV RNA and protein by Dz858-4-OMe suggests that it may constitute an attractive HCV antiviral.

A new prevention strategy for CMV infection was evaluated in our pediatric kidney transplant unit. This approach comprises a pre-emptive therapy, based upon the monitoring of CMV pp67 mRNA in whole blood by the qualitative NASBA, combined with prophylactic CMV-IG in high risk (R-/D+) children. Thirty-one kidney transplant children were followed for six months with serial measurements of CMV pp67 mRNA in the blood. The R-/D+ patients were given prophylactic CMV-IG for the first 16 wk after transplantation. I.v. ganciclovir was administered upon CMV detection by NASBA and was discontinued after two consecutive negative results. CMV infection, detected by NASBA, developed in 11 (35%) recipients: one (33%) of the R+/D- patients and 10 (72%) of the R-/D+ patients. CMV disease developed in 9.6% of the patients (3/31), exclusively in the R-/D+ group. These three patients presented concurrently with CMV viremia and disease. It is noteworthy that two of the three patients could not receive a complete course of CMV-IG, and one of the latter two subjects had been treated for acute rejection 15 days before CMV infection. Ganciclovir was given for the 11 cases of primary infection, and for three cases of relapsed CMV infection. pp67 NASBA-based pre-emptive ganciclovir therapy, combined with prophylactic CMV-IG in high-risk patients leads to a lower rate of CMV disease, as long as a complete course of CMV-IG has been administered and ganciclovir is given during the period of treatment for acute rejection in high-risk populations.

The hepatitis C virus (HCV) is the cause of a silent pandemic that, due to the chronic nature of the disease and the absence of curative therapy, continues to claim an ever-increasing number of lives. Current antiviral regimens have proven largely unsatisfactory for patients with HCV drug-resistant genotypes. It is therefore important to explore alternative therapeutic stratagems whose mode of action allows them to bypass viral resistance. Antisense oligonucleotides, ribozymes, small interfering RNAs, aptamers and deoxyribozymes constitute classes of oligonucleotide-based compounds designed to target highly conserved or functionally crucial regions contained within the HCV genome. The therapeutic expectation for such compounds is the elimination of HCV from infected individuals. Progress in oligonucleotide-based HCV antivirals towards clinical application depends on development of nucleotide designs that bolster efficacy while minimizing toxicity, improvement in liver-targeting delivery systems, and refinement of small-animal models for preclinical testing.

The aim of this study was to elucidate the in vitro response of gammadelta T cells to Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-infected B cells and to determine whether EBV-induced heat shock proteins (HSPs) might serve as gammadelta T-cell stimulants. Cytofluorometric analysis revealed HSP90 cell surface expression in 12% of the EBV-immortalized B-cell population in all four of the B-cell lines tested. HSP27, HSP60, and HSP70 were not detected on the cell surface by cytofluorometry in these same B-cell lines. HSP90 and HSP60, but not HSP70 or HSP27, were detected on the cell surface after 125I cell surface labeling and immunoprecipitation with anti-human HSP monoclonal antibodies. In vitro kinetic studies indicated that gammadelta T cells increased at least twofold by day 11 postinfection in cultures of EBV-seronegative peripheral blood lymphocytes infected with EBV, whereas percentages of alphabeta T cells in these same cultures either decreased slightly or remained relatively unchanged in response to EBV infection. Addition of anti-human HSP90 monoclonal antibody to the EBV-infected lymphocyte cultures inhibited gammadelta T-cell expansion by 92%. The inhibition of gammadelta T-cell expansion by anti-HSP90 antibody was reversed upon treatment with exogenous HSP90. Taken together, these results indicate that HSP90 played an important role in the stimulation of gammadelta T cells during EBV infection of B cells in vitro and may serve as an important immunomodulator of gammadelta T cells during acute EBV infection.

Background and Objectives: Natural killer (NK) cells constitute an important area of research for hematologic malignancies. The anti-leukemic activity of NK cells against acute myeloid leukemia (AML) blasts has been described, but very few data are available for acute lymphoid leukemia (ALL). The present study was designed to investigate whether: (i) NK effectors could be expanded from adult and pediatric ALL patients in complete remission; (ii) the signal transduction machinery of these cells was preserved; (iii) NK cells showed cytotoxic activity against autologous blasts; (iv) interleukin (IL)-2, IL-12 and IL-15 were able to increase lytic activity in our in vitro model; (v) any differences in cytotoxic activity could be found between expanded effectors from adult and pediatric patients., Design and Methods: We co-cultured patients' peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) with the feeder cell line RPMI 8866 and analyzed the NK cells' expansion capacity by cell count and cytofluorimetric analyses. Signal transduction of expanded effector cells was evaluated by Western blot. 51Cr release assays, before and after stimulation with activating cytokines, were performed to analyze the cytotoxic potential of effector cells against tumor cell lines and autologous blast cells. Data were analyzed with t-tests for paired data., Results: We obtained an average 40-fold increase in NK cells. Signal transduction through the CD16 receptor was preserved. Patients' expanded cells showed cytotoxic activity against target cell lines comparable to that of normal donors. More significantly, these cells also exerted a lytic effect against autologous blasts. In addition, incubating these effectors for 24 hours with IL-2 + IL-15 significantly increased this cytotoxic function. No differences in expansion and cytotoxic activity were found between pediatric and adult patients., Interpretation and Conclusions: These findings document for the first time the possibility of expanding ex vivo cytotoxic effectors with autologous killing capacity from ALL patients in remission, and suggest a new potential immunotherapeutic strategy for the management of early disease recurrence or of residual disease.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) early-antigen (EA) serologic profile was examined in conjunction with peripheral blood EBV DNA load, to assess its value in evaluating the risk of developing posttransplantation lymphoproliferative disease (PTLD). The cohort included 26 pediatric recipients of solid-organ transplants, 6 of whom developed PTLD. All 6 patients had high peripheral blood EBV DNA loads. Of the remaining 20 patients who did not develop PTLD, 14 had high EBV DNA loads, and 6 had low EBV DNA loads. None of the patients who developed PTLD had significant EA immunoglobulin G (IgG) titers. However, all 14 patients with high EBV DNA loads and without PTLD had high EA IgG titers, either at the time of initial high EBV DNA load or during the ensuing weeks. Here, we report that EBV DNA load analysis, combined with EA serologic analysis, is a potentially useful prognostic marker for evaluating the risk of developing PTLD.

Diseases caused by the Epstein-Barr virus are of great significance among organ transplant recipients. One of these diseases, post-transplant lymphoproliferative disease, is a major complication among organ transplant recipients. Management of this entity is problematic due to the difficulties with laboratory surveillance, diagnosis, prevention and treatment. A group of Canadian and American experts was assembled to discuss these aspects of Epstein-Barr virus diseases in Canadian organ transplant recipients. This report summarizes the relevant background literature and levels of evidence in relation to the outcomes of the deliberations and recommendations by the expert panel.

Purpose: Although binocular vision deficits occur in children who have a constant esotropia onset following significant maturation of stereopsis, it is uncertain whether adults are susceptible to changes to binocular vision. We examined binocular vision in adults with longstanding surgical monovision (> or =6 month's duration) to determine whether the binocular visual system remains susceptible to change., Methods: Participants included 32 adults with longstanding monovision through laser-assisted in situ keratectomy or photorefractive keratectomy and 20 age-matched control subjects. After full binocular correction, binocular function was measured by using the Randot Stereoacuity Test, the Randot Preschool Stereoacuity Test, and the Worth 4-dot test at near and distance. Monovision patients were grouped as having low anisometropia (<1.5 spherical D) or moderate anisometropia (> or =1.5 spherical D)., Results: Non-parametric analysis of variance revealed a significant difference between group median stereoacuity (H = 16.062; P <.001). Pairwise multiple comparisons indicated both groups with monovision had significantly worse stereoacuity compared with control subjects (P <.05). Median stereoacuity values were 100 seconds of arc for patients with low anisometropia, 150 seconds of arc for patients with moderate anisometropia, and 40 seconds of arc for control subjects. A larger proportion of patients with moderate anisometropia failed the Worth-4 dot test at distance than control subjects (z = 2.619; P =.009)., Conclusions: Reduced stereoacuity and an absence of foveal fusion in adults with longstanding surgical monovision suggest continued susceptibility of the binocular visual system to anomalous binocular experience.

Spironolactone and its active metabolites canrenone and potassium canrenoate are normally used as antihypertensive drugs. Although they are classified as antagonists of aldosterone, their mechanism of action cannot be ascribed solely to the regulation of ion transport in the distal tubule of nephrons. Here we have evaluated the effects of spironolactone, canrenone, and potassium canrenoate on contractile properties of isolated rat aorta rings. Spironolactone (1-300 microM), canrenone (1-300 microM), and potassium canrenoate (0.01-10 mM), in a concentration-dependent manner, relaxed rat aorta rings precontracted with phenylephrine (1 microM) or KCl (40 mM). These relaxant effects were not affected by prior treatment with either aldosterone (100 microM), glibenclamide (10 microM), or tetraethylammonium (10 mM), excluding the possibility that these drugs can be involved in either the nongenomic effect of aldosterone or on activation of potassium channels. Spironolactone and canrenone at concentrations of 30 and 100 microM, but not at 10 microM, and potassium canrenoate at concentrations of 0.3 and 1 mM, but not at 0.1 mM, significantly inhibited the phenylephrine (0.001-3 microM) concentration-response curve. Conversely, all tested concentrations of spironolactone (10, 30, and 100 microM), canrenone (10, 30, and 100 microM), and potassium canrenoate (0.1, 0.3, and 1 mM) significantly inhibited the concentration-response curve induced by cumulative concentrations of KCI (10-80 mM). Because both phenylephrine- and KCl-induced contractions imply an intracellular Ca2+ influx, we suggest that these drugs could act through an inhibition of voltage-dependent Ca2+ channels.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive individuals express elevated levels of interleukin-8 (IL-8), which is believed to be responsible for some of the clinical manifestations occurring during AIDS. We report here that virion-derived HIV type 1 (HIV-1) protein R (Vpr) increased IL-8 expression in primary T cells and macrophages, as well as in the T-cell line Jurkat, the monocytic cell line U937, and the epithelial cell line A549. Vpr appeared to increase IL-8 expression and IL-8 promoter activity by activating transcription factors NF-kappaB and NF-IL-6. Elevated Vpr was also shown to increase transcription of the NF-kappaB and NF-IL-6 enhancer-containing viral promoters for HIV, cytomegalovirus, and simian virus 40, as well as increase the expression of IL-6 and IL-10 in primary macrophages and in A549 cells, tumor necrosis factor alpha expression in primary T cells, and IL-6 and gamma interferon expression in U937 cells. These results suggest a new role for Vpr in the pathogenesis of HIV infection, namely, the activation of transcription factors NF-IL-6 and NF-kappaB.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) acute infectious mononucleosis (AIM) is characterized by transient immunosuppression in vivo and increased T-cell apoptosis after ex vivo culture of AIM peripheral blood mononuclear cells. We undertook experiments to test whether EBV or purified virion envelope glycoprotein gp350 could contribute to Fas-mediated T-cell apoptosis. Our in vitro results indicate that EBV increased Fas expression in CD4(+) T cells and Fas ligand (FasL) expression in B cells and macrophages. Purified gp350 was also shown to significantly increase CD95 expression in CD4(+) T cells. When T-cell CD95 was cross-linked, EBV-stimulated T cells underwent apoptosis. The induction of T-cell CD95 by EBV followed by CD95 cross-linking with anti-CD95 monoclonal antibody resulted in a loss in the number of T cells responding to the T-cell mitogens, anti-CD3 antibody, and interleukin-2. These results indicate that, in addition to serving as a principal ligand for the attachment of virus to target cells, gp350 may also act as an immunomodulatory molecule that promotes T-cell apoptosis.

To determine whether Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) constitutes a contributing factor in AIDS and, conversely, whether the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) alters the course of primary EBV infection in a pediatric population, 62 children born to HIV-infected mothers and prospectively followed were evaluated. EBV infection was documented by EBV-specific serology and polymerase chain reaction and by clinical history. HIV infection status was determined according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention pediatric classification system. Demographics from HIV-infected and HIV-uninfected children were comparable. The data suggest that HIV-infected children may acquire primary EBV infection earlier in life. The incidence of accompanying splenomegaly or hepatomegaly (or both) around the time of EBV seroconversion was higher among HIV-infected children than among HIV-uninfected children. In contrast, HIV disease progression and HIV-1 RNA load did not seem to be influenced by primary EBV infection.

The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) genome encodes a protein in its BamHI C restriction fragment rightward open-reading frame-1 (designated BCRF1 or viral interleukin-10 [vIL-10]) that shares protein homology and biologic properties with human IL-10. Several EBV disorders are characterized by prolonged active EBV infection. Because continued EBV replication could allow for increased vIL-10, ELISA and immunoprecipitation were used to determine whether vIL-10 expression during chronic active EBV infection resulted in vIL-10 and IL-10 antibodies. IL-10 antibodies were assayed in patients diagnosed with chronic and acute infectious mononucleosis (CIM, AIM), nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), and EBV-associated lymphoproliferative disease (LPD), as well as from healthy organ transplant patients and EBV-negative or EBV-positive persons. Whether anti-IL-10 antibodies could inhibit IL-10 biologic activity was determined. vIL-10 antibodies were found in CIM, NPC, and LPD patients and antibodies reactive to IL-10 were found in CIM patients. One CIM patient had IL-10 antibodies that neutralized IL-10 bioactivity in vitro.

Background: Human cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in transplant recipients. Isolation of CMV from blood leukocytes (CMV viremia) is considered predictive of CMV disease in transplant recipients. Therefore, investigation of methods for the rapid detection of CMV in the blood is important for diagnosis and management of these patients., Objective: To compare three techniques for the diagnosis and monitoring of CMV infection in a pediatric transplant population through the quantitative detection of CMV in peripheral blood leukocytes (PBL)., Methods: Serial blood specimens were obtained for most patients. After separation of the PBL from each specimen, aliquots of the PBL were used for direct detection of CMV antigenemia by immunoperoxidase staining of acetone-fixed cells (CMV-vue kit, INCSTAR), and by immunofluorescence staining of formaldehyde-fixed cells (Complete 1C3 kit, Biosoft Argene). PBL were also inoculated into conventional cell culture tubes and shell vials. Patients' medical records were reviewed to ascertain the clinical significance of the results., Results: A total of 154 specimens obtained from 38 pediatric transplant recipients were evaluated. CMV was detected in 16 specimens obtained from eight patients: 11 specimens were found positive with the CMV-vue kit, 10 with the Complete 1C3 kit, four by conventional culture, and one by the shell vial assay. Seven of the eight patients with CMV-positive PBL had clinical signs and other laboratory evidence of active CMV infection. In general, a high-level antigenemia was demonstrated in the presence of clinical disease, but there were exceptions., Conclusions: The two antigenemia kits were more sensitive than conventional culture and the shell vial assay for the detection of CMV in the blood of pediatric transplant patients. Our results suggest that CMV antigenemia is a sensitive and specific rapid method for the diagnosis and monitoring of CMV infection in our patient population.

Post-transplant patients undergoing prolonged Cyclosporine A (CsA) immunosuppressive therapy were reported to have an increased incidence of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-associated lymphoproliferative disorders. EBV-infected B cells cultured with CsA demonstrated increased EBV B-cell out-growth as compared to those cultured without CsA. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), following infection with EBV and CsA treatment, demonstrated increased IL-6 activity in the culture supernatant. The induction of IL-6 appeared to differ within the various lymphocyte populations. In monocytes and B cells, IL-6 expression was preferentially induced by EBV, and initiated by the binding of the two major virion glycoproteins, gp350 and gp220, to CD21, or a CD21-like receptor. Expression of IL-6 in T cells appeared to be due mainly to CsA. B cells also expressed IL-6 following EBV exposure, but not following CsA treatment. EBY-immortalized B-cell lines cultured with CsA exhibited both an increased number of cells expressing viral lytic-cycle antigens and increased amounts of lytic-cycle proteins. IL-6, which was induced by CsA in PBMC, was also capable of inducing the lytic viral cycle in several EBV-immortalized cells. When IL-6 was expressed, it was shown to act as an autocrine growth factor for B cells and to inhibit the immune system allowing for the promotion of B-cell tumors by impairing lymphokine-activated killer cells. Thus CsA treatment, in promoting both increased numbers of lytic EBV B cells and expression of the EBV paracrine growth factor, IL-6, within the microenvironment of EBV B:T cell and EBV B:monocyte interactions, may lead to increased EBV B-cell immortalization and ultimately result in the promotion of B-cell lymphomas in immunosuppressed patients.

Chronic active Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection occurs sporadically in a small fraction of individuals infected with EBV. A clear definition of the disease and an unambiguous diagnostic test are still lacking. In an attempt to identify a serologic marker to facilitate the diagnosis, immunoblot and radioimmunoprecipitation assay (RIPA) were compared with standard immunofluorescence on 39 available sera. Results by RIPA revealed that antibodies to a 120 kDa viral protein correlated with the presence of chronic active EBV infection; these antibodies were not detected in sera from other EBV-seropositive individuals, with the exception of one of two patients with ataxia telangiectasia. Also, RIPA was the most sensitive technique for detecting EBV antibodies in sera weakly or doubtfully positive for antibody to EB viral capsid antigen by indirect immunofluorescence. All these sera had antibodies to the 150 kDa protein, also known as p160, the major viral capsid antigen.

Polymorphic B cell lymphoma and diffuse B cell lymphoproliferation associated with Epstein-Barr virus infection is increasingly reported in immunodeficient patients. Accurate diagnosis of these pathologies is essential because the appropriate treatment regimens for the patients in question differ from those for patients with other lymphoproliferative diseases. Two complementary techniques are currently used in the diagnosis and characterization of Epstein-Barr virus-associated B cell lymphomas and diffuse B cell lymphoproliferation. Immunofluorescence allows specific detection of Epstein-Barr nuclear antigens in lymphomatous tissue. Molecular hybridization with the Bam H1-W and/or Bam H1-NJ probes confirms the presence of the Epstein-Barr virus genome in tumour cells. The Bam H1-NJ probe is also useful in determining the clonality of the tumour and the replication mode, episomal or linear, of the viral genome. The polymerase chain reaction method allows detection of the Epstein-Barr virus genome within 24 h in these tumours and is more sensitive.

The sequence of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and B lymphocyte changes in the 3 days following acute infection was analyzed. By 16 hr the average infected lymphocyte had 1 EBV episome. Nuclear protein-2 (EBNA-2) and EBNA-leader protein (-LP) were detected by 12 hr, and by 32 hr were at the levels of stable EBV infection in lymphoblastoid cell lines (LCLs). At 12 hr, all EBNA-LP and EBNA-2 RNAs were initiated from the Pw promoter. By 36 hr a significant EBNA-LP and EBNA-2 RNA fraction initiated from the upstream Pc promoter. Throughout acute infection, a similar fraction of potentially bicistronic EBNA-LP mRNAs had first exon splices which would result in EBNA-LP translation. By 36 hr c-myc RNA was transiently induced, and CD21 and CD23 RNAs were beginning to increase. This coincided with low-level EBNA-1, EBNA-3A, B, and C, and latent membrane protein-1 (LMP-1) expression. By 46 hr, EBNA-1, the EBNA-3s, and LMP-1 were near the levels ordinarily found in LCLs and a substantial fraction of lymphocytes were in S phase. These results are compatible with a key role for EBNA-2 (or EBNA-LP) in regulating virus and cell gene expression. High-level expression of the EBV-encoded small RNAs, EBERs, was delayed beyond 36 hr and may, therefore, be activated by other virus or cell genes. A 65-kDa virion protein persisted in acutely infected cells. This protein could be a mediator of virus or cell gene expression.

A new wild-type isolate of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) was identified in follow-up studies of a case of chronic active EBV infection in an 8-year-old girl who had high titres of antibody to viral capsid antigen and early antigen (EA) (greater than 20 480 and 2560 respectively), persistent splenomegaly and abnormal immunologic features. More than 10 throat washings from this patient failed to transform cord blood lymphocytes (CBL), but at least 7 were able to induce EA in Raji cells. Supernatants from cultures of the lymphoblastoid cell line obtained by in-vitro infection of this patient's leukocytes with the B95-8 strain of EBV revealed a herpesvirus particle when examined by electron microscopy. The same supernatants were unable to transform CBL but could induce EA in Raji cells upon superinfection. In 30 or more trials the patient's lymphocytes never transformed spontaneously but did become positive for EBV nuclear antigen and EA in the first week of culture at least twice. Parallel studies performed on the father of the patient yielded similar results. This, then, is the first report documenting lytic activity associated with a wild-type EBV isolate.

A virus recovered from the saliva of a child with chronic active Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection for 8 years was shown to induce EBV early antigen (EBV-EA) in Raji cells and to be expressed into EBV-EA in fresh EBV-negative peripheral blood leukocytes. However, it did not replicate its DNA. Oropharyngeal epithelial cells scraped from recurrent mouth lesions were similarly positive for EBV-EA. DNA extracted from these cells and digested with BamHI contained a 6-kilobase-pair fragment homologous to BamHI fragment V and B1 EBV DNA probes. Furthermore, Southern blots of the BamHI and EcoRI digests of the DNA extracted from the cell lines of the patient (transformed with EBV strain B95-8) and of her mother (spontaneous) revealed, in addition to the expected BamHI G, H, H2, and B1 fragments used as probes, additional shorter ones of a presumably endogenous defective virus.
