An application of Bologna Process parameters in the classroom setting requires new skills on the part of students. One of these significant skills is the ability to reflect upon one's learning path, which provides an opportunity for students to enhance their knowledge, and, moreover, make pivotal changes in their professional field. Thus, students would benefit greatly from reflective learning skills being harnessed at the early stage of their learning. Aim. This study aims to explore students' reflections and interpretations of their learning through writing essays. Methodology and research methods. This study employed a survey design with open-ended questions in which 14 out of 23 students participated. In addition, two individual inter-views were conducted, and 345 weekly essays and 23 final student reflections were analyzed. Results. Research results found that over 50% of respondents indicated that they had ac-quired reflective skills as they reflected on their content learning and writing and reading skills. Indeed, 96% of respondents demonstrated a positive understanding of the structure of the essay; however, their reflections remained at the descriptive level, in contrast to an expected change in their learning approach. Max Weber's thesis on the decisive influence of Protestant ethic on the formation and development of modern capitalism has become one of the best-known and widely shared canonical claims in social sciences. Since its publication at the beginning of the 20th century, this thesis, supported by subsequent great works by the German classic, has rarely been the subject of major controversy. The work of correcting Weber's thesis was undertaken in the late 20th century by Michael Novak. Novak's correction is not confrontational, but complementary. The American thinker abandons the research area of minority Protestant communities, which caught Weber's attention, and undertakes an analysis of the broader religious tradition, developing both before and after the Reformation. In particular, the achievements of Pope John Paul II, interpreted by Novak in terms of the renewal of a liberty current of Catholic social thought, provide important corrective data. The social sciences have grappled with sampling biases, perhaps most notably the prevalent reliance on convenience samples drawn from university student populations. Researchers in second language acquisition (SLA) have likewise taken steps to assess and address the scope of these biases and their effects on theory construction. This special issue presents a collection of replications and registered replication reports comprising one such initiative, titled SLA for All? The replications aimed to evaluate the generalizability of findings from foundational SLA studies, which were obtained with university‐educated participants, to nonuniversity participant groups. In this introduction to the special issue, we review and discuss the general failure to replicate the initial results, the complex notion of replication, and questions of research ethics. We offer an in‐depth reflection on how our perspectives, practices, and future plans have evolved and conclude with a vision for a more inclusive, diverse, and informative approach to SLA research going forward. The subject of economics, which was once famous for several views and schools of thought, has been limited to just one school neoclassical: where markets usually find equilibrium, meaning government intervention is not needed, and any such intervention could hinder the economic growth process and smooth functioning of the economy. The neoclassical theory focuses on the behaviour of individual agents, which are assumed to be economic decision-makers. There is an attempt to emphasise the importance of the Marxist approach to analysing capitalist crises logically and historically. The study of economics must stay close and keep unity between different social sciences, especially sociology, political science, and history, which classical economists had established but marginalist economists had tried to undermine. The study concludes that economics is embedded in society and politics, and the mainstream school of thought ignores this. This article examines the predictors of gender-specific literature production in the field of social sciences and humanities (SSH). The research used bibliometric information on 1132 gender-related articles by authors with Romanian affiliations. Binary logistic regression shows the individual and institutional factors of a paper's likelihood of including gender-related words in its title. Weak institutionalisation of Gender Studies marks this national context, reflected in the marginal and discontinuous integration in the curriculum of higher-education institutions. Our findings suggest that the female gender of the first or a single author, as well as the authors' affiliation with Romanian universities running master's programmes in Gender Studies, are positively associated with the outcome variable. Likewise, single-author articles have greater odds than co-authored articles of including a reference to gender in their titles. Conversely, articles published in journals in the JIF third quartile of the JCR hierarchy have less chance of having a title that conveys an orientation towards gender-specific research. The implications of our findings suggest that the decision-makers at the level of faculties and research institutes in SSH must focus on creating a facilitating environment for scholarly interest in feminist research. We propose tackling the negative stereotypes regarding feminism's ideological underpinnings and its ostensible lack of epistemological foundation. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has triggered a significant increase in academic research in the realm of social sciences. As such, there is an increasing need for the scientific community to adopt effective and efficient methods to examine the potential role and contribution of social sciences in the fight against COVID-19. Objectives: This study aims to identify the key topics and explore publishing trends in social science research pertaining to COVID-19 via automated literature analysis. Methods: The automated literature analysis employed utilizes keyword analysis and topic modelling technique, specifically Latent Dirichlet Allocation, to highlight the most relevant research terms, overarching research themes and research trends within the realm of social science research on COVID-19. Results: The focus of research and topics were derived from 9733 full-text academic papers. The bulk of social science research on COVID-19 centres on the following themes: 'Clinical Treatment', 'Epidemic Crisis', 'Mental Influence', 'Impact on Students', 'Lockdown Influence' and 'Impact on Children'. Conclusion: This study adds to our understanding of key topics in social science research on COVID-19. The automated literature analysis presented is particularly useful for librarians and information specialists keen to explore the role and contributions of social science topics in the context of pandemics. In this text, we argue for critical reflexivity regarding 'global social policy studies', focusing on the pitfalls of forms of historical presentism and Eurocentrism, not least in terms of a profound silence about colonialism, culminating in a 'view from above or from nowhere'. We explore the importance of historical legacies of historical socialist worldbuilding projects and the complexities of so-called 'transition' in liminal, peripheral, spaces. The text is structured around four interlinked dialogues and reflections: on the nature of our critique of Global Social Policy as an emergent field; on understanding the unfolding dynamics of social policy in the Global East; on the importance of decolonial histories and historiographies as a way of overcoming the profound 'presentism' of Global Social Policy and, finally, on the possibilities of articulating a Global Social Policy 'otherwise' and an ethics of translation. While there is ample recognition that intellectual work is - to some degree - relational and cooperative, most narratives of production focus on how intellectual supporters aid the author and the crafting of a work. In this contribution, I adopt a perspective centered on intellectual work as "dialogue and draft" among triads - the author, the work in progress, and the supporter - with a particular attention to the relationship that intellectual supporters develop with the work and the author. Through an archival analysis of personal correspondence that covers the years 2005–2021, drafts, and interventions, I tell a story of A Joyfully Serious Man as an ongoing project that shifted shape at critical junctures and in which not only the object and the author, but also the supporter were transformed. In the concluding remarks, I offer some potential questions for advancing the historical and sociological study of how intellectual self-concepts change in the context of asymmetric, yet very intimate, relations with work carried out by others. It is known that the maritime industry is intertwined with scientific developments. Considering the number of scientific research and support projects, the relationship between the scientific community and the industry is getting stronger day by day. The research aims to determine the main trend in the articles published between 2011-2022 in the journals published in the field of maritime management and indexed in SSCI-Social Science Citation Index. To determine the trend in the field of maritime management, the keywords of 1528 articles published in 3 journals determined according to the limitations were analyzed. As a result of keyword and network analysis, ports, maritime transport, liner shipping, container terminals, and data envelopment analysis-DEA are the most used keywords. The most important result obtained as a result of this study is that the events in the world (war, pandemic, terrorism, piracy, etc.) are in a rapid upward trend in the field of maritime business management and the scientific community has shown a rapid reaction on these issues. This research aims to reveal the main trends, gaps and paradigm shifts in crisis management. Data from research dealing with crisis/crisis management in the social sciences literature were examined in this context. The Web of Science database was used to collect research data. The data were analyzed using bibliometric analysis, a quantitative research method. The findings show that crisis management, crisis planning, crisis actions, strategic management and crisis management in public relations were the most intensively studied topics until 2018. But after 2018, research, tourism, Covid‐19 pandemic have shown a trend towards social media. In general, there is an increase in empirical research on crisis management. In this body of research, the United States of America has the greatest weight numerically, however, European countries are better positioned in terms of interest levels and international cooperation. In the social sciences, a direct relationship with societal actors is an extended practice of conducting research, particularly in fields entailing in-depth empirical fieldwork. This paper analyzes the interactive processes observed in knowledge production in social sciences. The aim is to understand how these relationships are constructed between academic and non-academic actors, which is the goal of researchers in approaching social actors in this way, and the scope of these relationships for generating knowledge and addressing societal problems. Given the modalities of social science research, two frameworks are essential to analyzing these processes. On the one hand, there is the notion of knowledge networks. On the other, knowledge mobilization concerns understanding these processes and their linearity or non-linearity. In this paper, integrating both frameworks helps explain interactive social research. Based on recent empirical information about social sciences research in Mexico, this paper analyzes the dimensions of the interactive character of knowledge generation in these disciplines. The purpose of the paper is to document how the interactions between academic and non-academic actors are built during research; the characteristics of such collaborations; how the mobilization of knowledge occurs emphasizing learning processes and trust generation. With the reflexive turn in the social sciences, emotional engagement is an inevitable and crucial part of data‐gathering and analysis. However, there is a glaring gap in methodological discussions to this end. Presenting ethnographic research into end of life with people living at home in England with heart failure, we argue for a methodological blend of engagement and detachment that shifts throughout the research process, and that sensory experience is a core part of engagement. We offer ethnographic examples which present and explore some alternatives to emotional engagement and objective detachment: (1) moving with participants to facilitate engagement during fieldwork through shared sensory experience; (2) detachment as a different way of relating when exiting the field and drawing participant relationships to a close; and (3) ethnographic closeness as the interplay of engagement and detachment in participant debriefing and data analysis. Based on well‐established anthropological concepts, and taking both engagement and detachment as embodied and relational, we develop a notion of ethnographic closeness in which detachment is a necessary part. Our detailed methodological discussion thus offers theoretically grounded possibilities and alternatives for approaching and managing the core tension of 'how close is too close?' in ethnographic practice. The 'problems' and 'solutions' of modern education are overwhelmingly produced and tailored by the modern episteme, institutions, truths, and powers of the Global North. To find new ways of thinking and doing sociology, this paper will explore the outlines of a new Global Sociology of Education Imagination (GSEI) inspired by pre-modern epistemes selected precisely because of their distance from modern European standpoints: the ancient lost matriarchal societies and commons-based societies organised around shared goods in pre-modern Europe. Using Foucault's archaeological methodology, this paper finds inspiration in these epistemes to outline a new GSEI capable of questioning certain tenets of the modern sociological episteme regarding science, knowledge, truth and its order, roles, voices, commitments, and 'places'. It concludes with an invitation to experiment with a new GSEI inspired by these pre-modern epistemes, as a tool to openly challenge modern (education) domination and make it intolerable. The aim to be achieved in this research is to find out, analyze and describe the Financial Management Accountability of Public Service Agencies (BLU) at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Law (FISH) Universitas Negeri Manado (Unima). The research method uses a qualitative descriptive approach. Informants were determined using perposive sampling. Data were analyzed descriptively qualitatively. Data collection techniques use observation, interviews and documentation. The data analysis techniques that will be used in this research consist of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of the research show that the process of preparing planning documents up to Budget Planning looks good, but in the future the coordination of the preparation of activities between Departments, study programs, Faculties and Universities, can still be improved. Meanwhile, in budget implementation, efforts are still needed to reduce or simultaneously eliminate obstacles in the submission of Accountability Letters (SPJ) from departments and study programs, so that they do not hinder the implementation of other activities due to negligence in SPJ matters. In Budget Accountability, the role of Faculty leaders is still needed in monitoring the preparation of activity reports and the placement of human resources who have competence in preparing reports. Purpose: Many libraries and archives maintain collections of research documents, such as administrative records, with paper-based formats that limit the documents' access to in-person use. Digitization transforms paper-based collections into more accessible and analyzable formats. As collections are digitized, there is an opportunity to incorporate deep learning techniques, such as Document Image Analysis (DIA), into workflows to increase the usability of information extracted from archival documents. This paper describes the authors' approach using digital scanning, optical character recognition (OCR) and deep learning to create a digital archive of administrative records related to the mortgage guarantee program of the Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944, also known as the G.I. Bill. Design/methodology/approach: The authors used a collection of 25,744 semi-structured paper-based records from the administration of G.I. Bill Mortgages from 1946 to 1954 to develop a digitization and processing workflow. These records include the name and city of the mortgagor, the amount of the mortgage, the location of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation agent, one or more identification numbers and the name and location of the bank handling the loan. The authors extracted structured information from these scanned historical records in order to create a tabular data file and link them to other authoritative individual-level data sources. Findings: The authors compared the flexible character accuracy of five OCR methods. The authors then compared the character error rate (CER) of three text extraction approaches (regular expressions, DIA and named entity recognition (NER)). The authors were able to obtain the highest quality structured text output using DIA with the Layout Parser toolkit by post-processing with regular expressions. Through this project, the authors demonstrate how DIA can improve the digitization of administrative records to automatically produce a structured data resource for researchers and the public. Originality/value: The authors' workflow is readily transferable to other archival digitization projects. Through the use of digital scanning, OCR and DIA processes, the authors created the first digital microdata file of administrative records related to the G.I. Bill mortgage guarantee program available to researchers and the general public. These records offer research insights into the lives of veterans who benefited from loans, the impacts on the communities built by the loans and the institutions that implemented them. The development of state institutions for the management and administration of Islam has enriched the range of Islamic authorities in Indonesia, with distinctive effects for public Islam. The article examines the effects of an Indonesian policy decision of 1975 that was intended to develop specific graduate attributes – 'modernity, openness and critical thought' – in graduates of Islamic post-graduate study. It was decreed that Islamic graduates would be sent to post-graduate programmes at universities in the West, altering a policy setting that had previously favoured venerable sites of Islamic learning in the Middle East. The Ministry of Religion associated sites of post-graduate learning in the West with graduate attributes of openness and critical thought, and perceived that these attributes were necessary for the development of a cohort of technical experts with competency to observe and analyse Islam in Indonesian populations. Article problematizes this notion of graduate attributes in the religious sphere, noting their novelty in comparison with competencies required of Islamic leaders in Indonesian communities (connectedness, affirmation of tradition, ritual expertise, etc). Attributes of 'openness and critical thought' position technical experts as critical observers of other segments in Indonesian Islamic society, such as Indonesia's popular preachers, many of whom are trained in sites of Islamic learning in the Middle East. In Indonesia's contemporary Islamic public sphere, such technical experts, many of whom were trained in Western social science departments, maintain a critical distance from Indonesia's popular preachers, the majority of whom (ironically) received religious training in sites of learning in the Middle East. Action aimed at developing healthier living conditions requires intersectoral collaboration, both across sectors and between levels of government. It also calls for the commitment of political and institutional authorities at municipal and higher levels. This article focuses on strategies of local intersectoral networks rooted in civil society for addressing living conditions. A longitudinal cross-case analysis was performed on eight case studies in Montreal (Canada). Data sources include 1445 documents and 41 interviews. Case studies were analyzed based on a theoretical framework focusing on critical events and a repertoire of transitional outcomes (TOs) that local intersectoral networks mobilised in order to produce change. The analysis focussed on the distribution of TOs in each case. Two types of strategies were identified. The Do It strategy relied primarily on acquiring resources as well as expanding and strengthening networks and projects. In this strategy, networks held the key decision-making and action levers to drive projects by themselves. In contrast, the Make It Happen strategy was mainly constructed around actions that led to self-representation and influencing others. In this strategy, networks held certain levers – such as mobilizing their citizen and community bases – but they also had to convince decision-makers to support action. The COVID-19 pandemic, particularly from 2020 to mid-2022, debilitated the management of the HIV epidemic in Africa. The multiple effects included well-documented HIV service interruptions, curtailment of HIV prevention programmes, the associated marked increase in both the risk for HIV infection among key populations and vulnerability of sub-populations (e.g. adolescent girls and young women) who are the focus of these programmes and — as importantly but less well-documented — the diverse negative socio-economic effects that accentuate HIV risk and vulnerability generally (e.g. loss of earnings, gender-based violence, stigma, police harassment of people during "lockdowns"). The global biomedical response to COVID-19 was necessary and remarkable for mitigating the bio-physical impacts of the pandemic (e.g. wide-spread surveillance coupled with rapid updates on the epidemiology of infections, rapid development of vaccines and revisions of treatment). However, drawing upon the widespread criticisms of state responses to the socio-economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and of "lockdowns" themselves, this article elaborates a core argument within those criticisms, namely that key lessons learnt during the HIV and AIDS and other pandemics were ignored, at least during the early stages of COVID-19. Our critique is that better integration of the social sciences and humanities in responses to pandemics can counter the reflex tendency to uncritically adopt a biomedical paradigm and, more importantly, to enable consideration of the social determinants of health in pandemic responses. At root, we re-assert a key value of 'integrated' interventions, namely the accommodation of context-sensitive considerations in the formulation of strategies, policies, plans and programme designs. BACKGROUND: The practice of reporting back individual results to participants in environmental health research has evolved significantly over the past 20 years. Research findings support the potential of report-back to enhance the ethics, quality, and impact of environmental health research. Nonetheless, implementation of environmental health report-back practices is not yet routine. OBJECTIVES: We propose a framework for institutionalizing appropriate report-back to participants of their individual results across the environmental health research enterprise. We provide a brief overview of the rationales for report-back, social science research on report-back experiences over the past two decades, and recent efforts to synthesize guidance in this field. We also describe barriers to be addressed in moving toward widespread implementation of report-back. DISCUSSION: Report-back of individual results is increasingly recognized as an ethical responsibility and essential component of impactful environmental health research. Experience shows that when personal results are returned with appropriate contextual information, report-back can increase environmental health literacy, promote individual actions, and enhance engagement in policy change. Therefore, report-back can promote environmental justice and reduce disparities in access to science. Despite this evidence base, report-back is not widely implemented. We recommend the collaborative development of guidelines, training, and resources to build capacity for appropriate report-back to study participants across the environmental health research enterprise, and we identify research priorities to advance the field. Development of tools and shared infrastructure for report-back holds promise for reducing barriers while ensuring high-quality personalized reports. Disseminating successful case studies could also advance excellence. We recommend including diverse scientific disciplines, community partners, representatives of study populations, clinicians, institutional review boards (IRBs), legal experts, public health professionals, and government officials in further developing this critical aspect of environmental health research. Erving Goffman has a reputation as an intellectual maverick who did not fit neatly into any disciplinary mold. His failure to adhere to professional conventions and occasionally off-putting demeanor are mentioned as an aside that has little to do with his oversize influence on the science of society. This paper advances a thesis that Goffman's status as the most cited American sociologist and widespread influence across social science is related to his principled refusal to fit his scholarship into prevailing scholarly canons. The argument is made that Goffman shared with his mentor, Everett Hughes, misgivings about the narrow professional focus in contemporary sociology, that his cross-disciplinary approach advanced social inquiry beyond its traditional confines, and that his colloquial style and penchant for long essays helped disseminate his ideas. The discussion starts with an overview of Goffman's professional career, after which it moves to the reception of his ideas by fellow sociologists and the impact of his work on neighboring disciplines. The study draws on the interviews, correspondence, and other documents assembled in the Erving Goffman Archives, as well as on several social science citation indexes and datasets illuminating Goffman's stature in various fields of scholarship. The notion of shared memory is unclear. How can we ensure that representations of the past are really identical for a group of individuals? In the first part of this text, I suggest that the blur surrounding the notion of shared memory is only a special case of the floating meaning intrinsic to holistic rhetoric used in the social sciences to designate shared or supposedly shared representations. In the second part, I present two of the three modalities of memory sharing (protomemory and memory itself) and propose 18 criteria intended to test the sharing of the second modality. The last part is devoted to collective metamemory—the third modality—defined by its narrative dimension, that is, by the storytelling of a shared or supposedly shared memory. I argue that the metamemorial narrative gives consistency to memory sharing by propagating belief in shared memory, notably through narrative illumination effects of past events. The shape of this memory intersubjectivity can be paradoxical: often, what we take for a shared memory is in reality the shared narrative of a belief in the sharing of this memory. While the concept of a 'financial elite' has become prominent within politics and the social sciences, it is not clear what value it holds for the analysis of inequalities of income, wealth and power under financial capitalism. Who are the financial elite, and what distinguishes them from other economically powerful groups? We delineate 'distributive', 'categorical' and 'relational' approaches to financial elites, arguing that various unresolved tensions have hampered clarification of the differentia specifica of the concept, and blunted its normative significance. We develop a new concept of financial elites that combines insights from elite studies and financialisation studies. We argue that the financial elite possess not only high incomes, but income primarily derived from 'rentier' channels, as endowed by the institutional structures of financialisation. Financial elites demonstrate the capacity not only to capitalise on these new accumulation channels, but to shape the institutional and regulatory landscapes in which they operate. In this conceptual piece, I use a framework of embodiment to argue for approaches to inquiry that are better suited to engage and amplify Black womxn's knowledges in social work than are more popular social sciences methods. I also relate embodiment to several epistemic frames, and warn against disembodiment through more popular methods. Finally, I present three embodied research approaches that align with feminist social work principles. Throughout the piece, I reference works that explore feminist and embodied practices while centering Black womxn. I also frame discussion through my own embodiment as a Black femme scholar and practitioner, and embodiment and its potential in inquiries through a Black feminist tradition. Embodiment has been a framework of feminist scholarship for decades, broadly defined as living out knowledge through the body and/or in its environments through a process of becoming. Scholars in this school of thought account for their and participants' emotions and dispositions as part of how knowledge is lived, while treating the body as a text to be read. This research paper examines the economic contexts and theories of capital that contitute the difference in digital media research; The questions that digital media research must enquire to respond to a world in crisis; How did transformations in digital media technologies change the nature of the questions asked by media and cultural studies scholars, the theoretical frameworks, or the methodologies they used?. The transmission of generational knowledge in Alaska Native communities has been disrupted by colonization and led to declining health among Alaska Natives, as evidenced by the loss of knowledge regarding traditional foods and foodways and increasing rates of cardiometabolic disorders impacting Alaska Natives. Elders play a central role in passing down this generational knowledge, but emerging Elders may have difficulty in stepping into their roles as Elders due to the rapid social and cultural changes impacting their communities. The Center for Alaska Native Health Research (CANHR) and the Denakkanaaga Elders Program are partnering with the Center for Indigenous Innovation and Health Equity to uplift and support traditional food knowledge and practices to promote health in Alaska Native communities. Guided by a decolonizing and Indigenizing framework, researchers at CANHR are working with Athabascan Elders in the Interior of Alaska to strengthen and protect the intergenerational transmission of cultural knowledge and practices for emerging Elders. This community-academic partnership will implement and evaluate an Elders Mentoring Elders Camp to focus on repairing and nurturing relationships through the practice and preservation of cultural knowledge and practices, including traditional foodways. I propose that the grounded types analytical method (GTAM) is a systematic and useful means of typology construction for qualitative studies. GTAM arose within European social sciences in response to a need to schematize qualitative typology and to explicate qualitative types more precisely. GTAM is applicable to a variety of qualitative situations. I illustrate in this paper GTAM's applicability through my study of school choice in the Paris suburbs. I argue then for its inclusion in the qualitative study of U.S. primary and secondary school choice because it is a credible form of analysis that would provide a new lens for viewing how behaviours and beliefs enter into choices. This article proposes the Shiny app 'CLC Estimator' –Congeneric Latent Construct Estimator– to address the problem of estimating latent unidimensional constructs via congeneric approaches. While congeneric approaches provide more rigorous results than suboptimal parallel-based scoring methods, most statistical packages do not provide easy access to congeneric approaches. To address this issue, the CLC Estimator allows social scientists to use congeneric approaches to estimate latent unidimensional constructs smoothly. On 1 and 2 June, NTT Communication Science Laboratories (CS Labs) hosted the Open House on-site for the first time in four years. We presented 6 talks and 16 exhibits of our latest research efforts in information and human sciences at the event, attracting more than 400 visitors over the two days. This article, based on literature review and interviews with key informants in 2021-22, reflects on the degree to which social science and social science specialists were involved in the Thai government's handling of the multidimensional effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The article juxtaposes the marginal role of social scientists in official structures with their multiple engagements outside of such structures. The findings show that pandemic-specific social research agenda of social scientists were generally technocratic in nature, being geared to the perceived needs of policymakers, even if formal mechanisms to feed inputs into the policymaking process were restricted. Using public debates and the media, a smaller group of social scientists were able to make an impact by highlighting neglected aspects of the pandemic, advocating for the rights of the underserved and challenging policy decisions. The role of social science in Singapore's "whole-of-government" management of COVID-19 was largely limited to evaluating public perceptions of government policy and understanding the socio-behavioural factors that could help better manage the pandemic. The problems faced by marginalized groups were largely overlooked, although NGOs using arguments based on social science and academics writing on public platforms sought to draw attention to some of those issues. This article identifies the barriers to a more robust application of social science in tackling systemic blind spots in Singapore and offers reflections from a "post-normal science" perspective for interdisciplinary collaborative efforts that may complement state capacity in post-COVID-19 transformation and future crises. This article examines the research work of the University of the Philippines Center for Integrative and Development Studies (UP CIDS), the policy research unit of the University of the Philippines System, as it sought to address the challenges to Philippine society arising from the COVID-19 pandemic. The main concern of the various UP CIDS programmes is addressing the needs of marginalized sectors, including strengthening the primary healthcare system; relieving the plight of farmers, fisher folk and micro, small and medium-sized enterprises; and providing solutions to the demands of the education sector during the pandemic. The article shows that the social sciences played an important role in highlighting aspects of the pandemic that affect various sectors of society and, to some extent, in feeding into the policymaking process. Unprecedented quantities of data that could help social scientists understand and ameliorate the challenges of human society are presently locked away inside companies, governments, and other organizations, in part because of privacy concerns. We address this problem with a general-purpose data access and analysis system with mathematical guarantees of privacy for research subjects, and statistical validity guarantees for researchers seeking social science insights. We build on the standard of "differential privacy," correct for biases induced by the privacy-preserving procedures, provide a proper accounting of uncertainty, and impose minimal constraints on the choice of statistical methods and quantities estimated. We illustrate by replicating key analyses from two recent published articles and show how we can obtain approximately the same substantive results while simultaneously protecting privacy. Social scientists commonly seek to make statements about how word use varies over circumstances—including time, partisan identity, or some other document-level covariate. For example, researchers might wish to know how Republicans and Democrats diverge in their understanding of the term "immigration." Building on the success of pretrained language models, we introduce the à la carte on text (conText) embedding regression model for this purpose. This fast and simple method produces valid vector representations of how words are used—and thus what words "mean"—in different contexts. We show that it outperforms slower, more complicated alternatives and works well even with very few documents. The model also allows for hypothesis testing and statements about statistical significance. We demonstrate that it can be used for a broad range of important tasks, including understanding US polarization, historical legislative development, and sentiment detection. The study aimed to conduct a systematic literature review to identify the trends, impacts, and challenges of mobile microlearning (MML) research. Using five academic databases from the fields of social science, engineering, and medical science as search sources, 26 scholarly articles, published between 2015 and 2020, were retrieved. The study applied a content analysis method to analyze and synthesize the data with three focal points: (a) research purposes and publication sources; (b) research settings, including learning domains, contexts, research methods, measures, and participants; and (c) research outcomes, advantages, and challenges of MML based on the reviewed literature. Results indicated that the mixed-method approach has become a trend in MML studies and MML has been widely applied in both formal and informal settings, especially in the just-in-time workplace learning. In terms of advantages, MML not only enhanced learners' achievement and motivation but also improved skills and knowledge retention. Some deficiencies of MML that were identified included the need for further investigation on meaningful designs of microcontents to fit into small screen mobile devices and issues of usability. This comparative critical review study delves into the utilization of survey and experimental research designs within the intricate landscape of social sciences. Through a comprehensive analysis of six articles—three for each methodology—focuses on social media's impact on selfesteem (survey) and news consumption effects (experiment). The study's comparative framework critically evaluates the alignment of research designs with objectives, robustness of methodologies, and inherent strengths and weaknesses. It demonstrates how these methodologies, though distinct, offer complementary tools for comprehending complex social phenomena Accordingly, the survey-based investigations emphasize the critical understanding of the interplay between social media use and self-esteem, particularly among the youth. Simultaneously, experimental studies unravel factors shaping news consumption patterns, holding significance for news organizations and researchers seeking to enhance audience engagement. Limitations include sample size constraints and potential bias. Nevertheless, through examination of the research designs and specific contexts, the study underscores the importance of methodological choice and its impact on outcomes. It highlights the potential of innovative techniques like the Experience Sampling Method in surveys and the importance of controlled settings in experiments. In this paper, we shed light on the question of whether it is morally permissible to enslave artificially intelligent entities by looking at up to date research from the social sciences – as well as the ancient lessons from Jewish law. The first part of the article looks at general ethical questions surrounding the ethics of AI and slavery by looking at contemporary social science research and the moral status of 'Sex Bots' – AI entities that are built for the purpose of satisfying human sexual desires. The second part presents a Jewish perspective on the obligation to protect artificial intelligent entities from abuse and raises the issue of the use of such entities in the context of sex therapy. This is followed by a review of slavery and in particular, female slavery in Jewish law and ethics. In the conclusions, we argue that both perspectives provide justification for the 'Tragedy of the Master' – that in enslaving AI we risk doing great harm to ourselves. This has significant and negative consequences for us – as individuals, in our relationships, and as a society that strives to value the dignity, autonomy, and moral worth of all sentient beings. Following academic globalization, successful integration into the international research community is a fundamental interest for all participating countries. The success of these internationalization processes, however, are often under scrutiny, and the results are rarely unequivocal. This holds true for Central and Eastern Europe, which usually is described as a semiperipheral region of global knowledge production. Analyzing the publication and citation indices of 365 Hungarian social scientists in one national (Hungarian Scientific Bibliography) and two global (Scopus, Google Scholar) databases, we explicate the current international impact of Hungarian academic research while exploring pivotal factors behind the major differences between databases. Our results indicate that Hungarian scholars lag behind their peers in neighboring countries, necessitating effective policy measures. To this end, the analysis recommends the use of standardized global publication databases instead of national datasets, while still acknowledging the shortcomings of the latter in research assessment protocols. Delving into the universe of the common and the multiple theoretical aspects that have sought to understand their purpose, objective and characteristics, entails carrying out a genealogy of the guiding concepts around this theme: common goods, procommons, shared use resources, among others. The debate continues in force, this is mainly due to the fact that the persistence and diversity of forms of rural communalism and its ability to adapt to the current capitalist context manifested to a certain extent that a communal system could constitute an emancipatory space with certain autonomy. The objective of this paper is to present a model for the analysis of communality based on the contributions of the social sciences in a systemic key. That is to say that the systems approach will be a methodological tool from which it will seek to define a communal system and identify its structural and funtionaling elements. As main findings, five structural dimensions are identified within the communal system (common goods, institutional design, property regime, work organization processes and rural communalities) and four funtionaling dimensions (the formation of the agreement, the forms of social appropriation of nature, economic practices and linkages with external factors). In addition, there are problematic aspects that condition the future and durability of communal systems in Latin American agriculture, such as links with institutions that promote rural development and relations with markets. In this article we explore pláticas as a method of refusal for educational practice that embodies a type of Indigenous cosmopolitics that undergird communities we come from. Such an understanding of pláticas generates working towards praxis informed by a refusal that avoids recognition by the university, much like we learn through pláticas the intimate ways our caretakers resist sovereign state power. Such an understanding of pláticas demands a realist practice where we recognize the limits of the work in the university, our capacity as faculty to affect change in a racial capitalist, settler colonial nation. Consequently, pláticas as a method specifically require refusal of the modes of the academy and the neoliberal model of productivity that captures minoritized experiences for the benefit of white, settler society and the university. This article documents the process I, as a teacher educator at UCLA's History Geography Project, went through to develop my lesson for centering Salvi history, "Reclaiming Our Stories Con Pláticas y Fotos: Pláticas as Pedagogy In K-12 History Classrooms." Inspired by the scholarship of feminist women of color who have shaped and informed my teaching practice and my views on the purpose of history education, I make the case for why Salvi communities in Los Angeles need a lesson like this to intervene in the erasures of Salvi communities in the history-social science framework for California public schools. These overt silences that I, and an entire generation of Salvi students, have faced at home and in school motivated this lesson, in which I use pláticas as pedagogy in an effort to move towards healing in our community. Specifically, I narrate how my lesson draws on the five principles outlined in the Chicana/Latina feminist plática methodology as well as the ways my lesson aimed to meet the specific needs of my Salvi community and history instruction. I conclude by reflecting on how I made this lesson accessible to educators through various professional developments and reflect on the process of working with educators. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

While violence is often targeted at and experienced by bodies with different identities or appearance, studies of violence in social sciences research often neglect the body as a data source and site of analysis. This article makes an original contribution to the literature on visual methods in general and arts-based approaches specifically, by focusing on the understudied and underutilised method of body mapping. It is novel in developing techniques for using body mapping as a tool for seeing violent extremism in international politics. The approach here enables researchers to engage with a potentially difficult topic and interrogate the nuances of how violent extremism is understood, experienced and resisted at a local community level. In so doing, it produces a rich, original data set of 20 body maps, interviews and focus group discussions with 10 men and 10 women from Muslim communities from around the coast in Kenya created during two 5-day intensive body mapping workshops held in Mombasa in November 2019. This embodied storytelling challenges dominant ideas about violent extremism and makes visible otherwise marginalised and obscured personal narratives and lived experiences of violence. This is of fundamental importance because everyday violence and exclusion not only go unaddressed in the efforts to tackle violent extremism but are also exacerbated by the excessive security measures used by the government in its effort to counter the threat of groups such as Al-Shabaab. The techniques we develop in this article have significant advocacy potential and societal impact: body mapping creates a platform and a tool for highlighting and challenging everyday practices such as female genital mutilation, violence against women, discrimination, racism, police brutality, tribalism and marginalisation. All pain research combined advances the different domains of the biopsychosocial model and its interactions. However, there may be discrepancies between individual countries in their biomedical, psychological or social focus to pain research. As a proxy for this possible discrepancy, we analysed the biopsychosocial orientation of presentations at a recent major international pain conference. The primary aim was to investigate whether there are geographical differences across Europe regarding the biopsychosocial orientation of workshop presentations at the 12th EFIC congress. The secondary aim was to investigate whether there were differences between female and male presenters regarding the biopsychosocial focus of their presentations. All available workshop abstracts were blinded and categorised by two independent reviewers as biomedical, psychosocial, biopsychosocial, or not applicable. Psychosocial and biopsychosocial were merged to non-biomedical. Of the 140 available abstracts, 126 abstracts could be categorised (biomedical: 51 %; non-biomedical: 49 %). Three clusters of countries emerged: (1) countries with a clear majority (≥80 %) of non-biomedical presentations (The Netherlands and Belgium); (2) countries with a balance between biomedical and non-biomedical presentations (United Kingdom, Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland); and (3) countries with a clear majority (71–100 %) of biomedical presentations (Italy, Germany, Switzerland and France). Overall, women delivered more presentations than men (70 vs. 56 presentations), and delivered proportionally more non-biomedical presentations (57 %) whereas men delivered proportionally more biomedical presentations (61 %). Analysis of the 12th EFIC congress revealed geographical and gender differences in biopsychosocial orientation. Opening data promises to improve research rigour and democratize knowledge production. But it also presents practical, theoretical, and ethical considerations for qualitative researchers in particular. Discussion about open data in qualitative social psychology predates the replication crisis. However, the nuances of this ongoing discussion have not been translated into current journal guidelines on open data. In this article, we summarize ongoing debates about open data from qualitative perspectives, and through a content analysis of 261 journals we establish the state of current journal policies for open data in the domain of social psychology. We critically discuss how current common expectations for open data may not be adequate for establishing qualitative rigour, can introduce ethical challenges, and may place those who wish to use qualitative approaches at a disadvantage in peer review and publication processes. We advise that future open data guidelines should aim to reflect the nuance of arguments surrounding data sharing in qualitative research, and move away from a universal "one‐size‐fits‐all" approach to data sharing. This article outlines the past, present, and the potential future of open data guidelines in social‐psychological journals. We conclude by offering recommendations for how journals might more inclusively consider the use of open data in qualitative methods, whilst recognizing and allowing space for the diverse perspectives, needs, and contexts of all forms of social‐psychological research. In this brief essay, we will seek to approximate ways of implementing qualitative methodologies, heuristically articulating what we call root thought. We will counterpoint with some theoretical aspects to support collaborative work aligned with the IAP and carried out together with the Barrios Populares of Salta capital and the National University of Salta. Likewise, we will give a panoramic account of the struggle of the communities for fundamental rights, highlighting organization tactics and centralization of collective actions from the provincial table of popular neighborhoods. Some data and reflections arising from the time of research that is carried out to date at the table that articulates the neighborhoods, as well as passages of experiences carried out with students of the degree in Philosophy (UNSa), are amalgamated here as gestures pictorial and conjunctive crosses between readings and experiences, as a dialogue between practice and theory. It is the qualitative methodologies, together with the IAP perspective, that support our position. The analytical work is nourished by diverse disciplines of the Social Sciences, Latin American Thought and Philosophy.
