Masculine honor ideology is characterized by the cultivation, maintenance, and defense of reputations for toughness, bravery, and strength. The link between masculine honor endorsement and increased risk-taking – especially an increased tolerance for and even expectation of violence - is well-established in the literature. However, little empirical research has examined what factors might explain this relationship. This study investigates perceived invulnerability, the cognitive bias that one is immune to threats, as a mediator in the relationship between masculine honor ideology and risky decision-making. Results show moderate support for this relationship's existence. These findings elaborate on previous research between honor and specific risky decisions by demonstrating honor to instill cognitive biases in its adherents that make them more tolerant of risk, and thus more likely to decide to engage in risky behaviors. Pain, a universal and burdensome condition, influences numerous individuals worldwide. It encompasses sensory, emotional, and cognitive facets, with recent research placing a heightened emphasis on comprehending pain's impact on emotion and cognition. Cognitive bias, which encompasses attentional bias, interpretation bias, and memory bias, signifies the presence of cognitive distortions influenced by emotional factors. It has gained significant prominence in pain-related research. Human studies have shown that individuals experiencing pain exhibit cognitive bias. Similarly, animal studies have demonstrated cognitive bias in pain-induced states across various species and disease models. In this study, we aimed to investigate the memory bias displayed by rats experiencing acute pain, using the affective bias test (ABT) as a tool and administering either hotplate or formalin to induce acute pain. Our data showed that rats demonstrated a significant preference for the control treatment-related substrate over the substrate associated with formalin treatment (p < 0.001), an indication of the prominent memory bias stimulated by acute formalin injections. However, when exposed to substrates related to hotplate treatment and control treatment, the acute pain induced by the hotplate treatment failed to generate a statistically significant choice bias in rats (p = 0.674). Our study demonstrates that the negative emotions associated with acute pain can be reflected by memory bias in ABT, at least for formalin-induced acute pain. The primary determinant of the self (S) is the conscious experience (CE) we have of it. Therefore, it does not come as a surprise that empirical research on S mainly resorts to the CE (or lack of CE) that subjects have of their S. What comes as a surprise is that empirical research on S does not tackle the problem of how CE contributes to building S. Empirical research investigates how S either biases the cognitive processing of stimuli or is altered through a wide range of means (meditation, hypnosis, etc.). In either case, even for different reasons, considerations of how CE contributes to building S are left unspecified in empirical research. This article analyzes these reasons and proposes a theoretical model of how CE contributes to building S. According to the proposed model, the phenomenal aspect of consciousness is produced by the modulation--engendered by attentional activity--of the energy level of the neural substrate (that is, the organ of attention) that underpins attentional activity. The phenomenal aspect of consciousness supplies the agent with a sense of S and informs the agent on how its S is affected by the agent's own operations. The phenomenal aspect of consciousness performs its functions through its five main dimensions: qualitative, quantitative, hedonic, temporal, and spatial. Each dimension of the phenomenal aspect of consciousness can be explained by a specific aspect of the modulation of the energy level of the organ of attention. Among other advantages, the model explains the various forms of S as outcomes resulting from the operations of a single mechanism and provides a unifying framework for empirical research on the neural underpinnings of S. Most theories of pain emphasize cognitive factors in the development of chronicity, but they have rarely been studied in the context of the transition from acute to chronic pain. The aim of the present study was to assess the role of interpretation bias, pain anxiety, and pain avoidance in acute and chronic pain and the transition from acute to chronic pain. Study 1 recruited a sample of N = 85 adults with chronic pain. Study 2 recruited a sample of N = 254 adults with acute pain and followed them up 3 months later. Both studies assessed interpretation bias with the word association task, as well as measuring pain-related anxiety, pain avoidance, pain severity, and pain interference. In study 2, pain outcomes at 3 months were also assessed. Across both acute and chronic pain samples, interpretation bias was associated with pain interference, but not pain severity. Path analysis mediation models for study 2 showed that interpretation bias was associated with increased pain anxiety, which predicted both pain severity and pain interference 3 months later. Pain anxiety was also associated with pain avoidance, but pain avoidance did not predict pain outcomes. This research provides further insight into the transition from acute to chronic pain, suggesting that interpretation bias in acute pain may play a role in pain-related anxiety that drives pain interference, thus maintaining chronic pain. The practice of keeping dairy cows with their calves continues to gain interest. Cow-calf contact, or lack thereof, is expected to affect emotional states, but this requires empirical testing. Different types of cow-calf contact may also affect the emotional states of cows. The primary objective of this study was to assess the emotional state of dairy cows with full-time (23 h/d), part-time (10 h/d), or no-contact with their calves (separated 48 h after birth), using a visual judgment bias test (JBT) about one month after calving; JBT is the current gold-standard method to assess emotional state in animals by evaluating optimism or pessimism (illustrated by the proverbial half-full or half-empty water glass). The secondary objective was to compare outcomes of color- versus shape-based visual JBT. Fifty dairy cows were trained to approach a positive image on a screen (rewarded with food) and to avoid a negative image (else punished with waving bag). Once learned (>80% correct over 2 consecutive days), cows were presented with 3 ambiguous images (each presented once per day among 4 positive and 3 negative images, repeated over 4 d), and their approach responses recorded. For the color method (10 full-time, 9 part-time and 11 no-contact cows), positive and negative images were a solid red or white background; ambiguous images were shades of pink. For the shape method (8 full-time, 6 part-time and 6 no-contact cows), positive and negative images were a white circle or cross on a black background; ambiguous images were overlaid circle and cross in varying shades of gray. Cows learned to discriminate colors quicker than shapes (7.3 d, confidence limits [CL]: 6.6–8.2 d; vs. 9.3 d, CL: 8.1–10.6 d). Approaches to ambiguous colors followed a generalization curve (81.0, 33.1, and 5.0 ± 3.7% for near-positive, middle, and near-negative images, respectively), but not approaches to ambiguous shapes (31.9%, 25.7%, and 21.9% ± 4.8%, respectively), indicating colors over shapes should be used in visual JBT for cattle. Part-time cows approached fewer ambiguous color images than full-time cows (23.5%, CL: 13.4%–34.4%; vs. 44.8%, CL; 32.8%–57.1%) whereas no-contact cows were intermediate, but not different from full-time or part-time cows (37.8%, CL; 26.8%–49.5%). The color JBT results show a pessimistic bias (indicating a negative emotional state) in cows with part-time calf contact, possibly due to repeated daily separation from her young calf, relative to cows with full-time calf contact. Thus, cow-calf contact systems appear to influence the emotional state of cows depending on the practice. Cows without calf contact showed no difference in judgment bias between cows with full- or part-time calf contact, suggesting these cows probably do not experience a pervasive negative emotional state (relative to those with calf contact) approximately 30 d after calf separation. However, individual variability in judgment bias was evident for all treatments. The visual judgment bias test is a useful methodology for assessing emotional states of dairy cows; future research should prioritize understanding the emotional states of dairy cows in alternative management systems. Our ability to think critically and our disposition to do so can have major implications for our everyday lives. Research across the globe has shown the impact of critical thinking on decisions about our health, politics, relationships, finances, consumer purchases, education, work, and more. This chapter will review some of that research. Given the importance of critical thinking to our everyday lives, the fair and unbiased assessment of critical thinking is useful for guiding educators in their classrooms, for the sake of self-improvement, and in employment decisions. This chapter will also review the psychometric properties of several critical thinking assessments, with a special emphasis on the everyday behaviors predicted by these assessments. People experience discrimination across a variety of domains, including at work and in dealings with public institutions, but what makes some individuals discriminate against others? Two dominant scholarly approaches—"statistical" and "taste-based"—offer different explanations. Statistical discrimination models imply that discrimination occurs because of incomplete information (informational bias), whereas taste-based discrimination models emphasize more elusive and deep-rooted cognitive biases. Adding new insights into whether discrimination is "statistical" or "taste-based," this article examines how providing information that reduces informational bias affects discrimination. Using a preregistered survey experimental design, a representative sample of Danish residents (n = 2,024) are exposed to three unique vignettes, each involving a choice of service provider (general practitioner, babysitter, and house cleaner). Relating to gender and nativity stereotypes, we manipulate the gender of the general practitioners and the babysitters, and the country of origin of the house cleaners. Moreover, we manipulate exposure to rating cues about the service providers' task performance, thus mitigating informational bias to some extent. Contrasting the expectations of statistical discrimination models, the performance ratings cues do not mitigate discrimination. Unintentional misinterpretation of research in published biomedical reports that is not based on statistical flaws is often underrecognized, despite its possible impact on science, clinical practice, and public health. Important causes of such misinterpretation of scientific data, resulting in either false positive or false negative conclusions, include design‐associated errors and hidden (or latent) variables that are not easily recognized during data analysis. Furthermore, cognitive biases, such as the inclination to seek patterns in data whether they exist or not, may lead to misinterpretation of data. Here, we give an example of these problems from hypothesis‐driven research on the potential seasonality of neonatal seizures in a rat model of birth asphyxia. People diagnosed with schizophrenia share underlying cognitive deficits in self-monitoring (i.e., identifying the source of self-generated behaviours). This study aimed to investigate whether self-monitoring deficits in schizophrenia are due to a cognitive response bias towards external perceptions or a reduced discriminability of imagined and performed actions. We hypothesised that self-monitoring deficits in individuals with schizophrenia are primarily driven by bottom-up processes, leading to a compromised ability to discriminate between internally generated behaviours as opposed to a cognitive response bias towards performed actions. We recruited 333 participants, including 192 with schizophrenia and 141 healthy controls. As part of the Action-Memory Task, participants were instructed to either imagine or physically perform 36 different actions, half of which were presented as pictograms and half as text. In the test phase, participants indicated whether they had performed or imagined each action, whether it appeared in text or pictogram, or whether it was a new action. Using Signal Detection Theory, the study primarily analysed group differences in discriminability and response-bias. Participants with schizophrenia made significantly more self-monitoring errors than healthy controls. This was primarily due to significantly lower sensitivity, but not a response bias. Whereas recognition memory errors were driven by both lower sensitivity and a response bias. The findings suggest that self-monitoring in schizophrenia was specifically impaired by a compromised discriminability of imagined and performed events and an inability to appropriately compensate by adjusting decision-thresholds. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a rare, progressive neurodegenerative disease affecting both upper and lower motor neurons. Throughout medical training, it is taught that the most recognizable clinical presentation involves both motor and bulbar changes. Given the complexity of the diagnosis however, it is no surprise that there is significant multisystem involvement secondary to the autonomic dysfunction associated with the disease. The clinical cognitive biases that exist due to prior educational training and patient provided chief complaint can mislead clinicians and prevent a holistic, inclusive approach toward each patient encounter. This can delay diagnosis and increase unnecessary healthcare spending. In a disease with such a poor prognosis, this effect can be catastrophic, resulting in unacceptable medical, functional, and psychosocial outcomes. As clinicians, it is imperative to acknowledge these cognitive biases through introspection, which can improve clinical outcomes and ultimately patient quality of life for those facing this devastating disease. We report a case of a 55‐year‐old female who presented with a chief complaint of palpitations and minimal slurred speech on multiple encounters, subsequently leading to a focused cardiovascular workup. It was not until after several hospital encounters that a thorough functional and neuromuscular exam was performed, which ultimately helped to broaden the differential and lead to the diagnosis of ALS. Unfortunately, due to this delayed diagnosis, the patient's functionality was beyond repair. Given the underlying cognitive biases that are present in all clinicians, we hypothesize this patient's sex, presenting symptom, and primary chief complaint misled clinicians to perform limited history and physical examinations, therefore, leading to a narrowed differential. If diagnosed in a timely fashion, vital services such as rehabilitation could have provided this patient with the necessary medical, functional, and psychosocial support to face this devastating disease. Research is an integral part of medical progress that leads to better understanding of disease processes and the development of therapies to improve patient care. The medical community has an obligation and societal responsibility to review its practices and advance its knowledge to optimize care for those who entrust it with their health and well-being. While ultimately intended to benefit patients specifically and society as a whole, every laboratory and clinical investigation inherently carries an element of uncertainty and has attendant risks. These can have unintended and, at times, harmful consequences that cannot justify the knowledge gained. In order to mitigate these risks and protect human subjects involved in clinical research studies, a basic framework of ethical principles has been developed to guide responsible experimental design, execution, and data dissemination. This article provides a review of these principles and the historical context from which they were derived and explores the persistent challenges and cognitive biases that can increase susceptibility to unethical research practices. Transfer-based attacks, a type of adversarial attack, have become a growing threat in recent years with the proliferation of cloud services. Deep neural networks that exploit human cognitive bias (Loosely Symmetric-Deep Neural Network, LS-DNN) are known as a defensive technique against transfer-based attacks. LS-DNN can prevent malfunctions caused by adversarial examples with a high probability by incorporating human learning characteristics into the neural network's nodes. However, maintaining accuracy against normal data and reducing Training Time is challenging. This paper proposes a new model called "LS+-DNN" inspired by the Dropout method to solve this problem. Evaluation experiments on two datasets show that the proposed model can achieve both in high dimensions. In addition, we analyze the proposed model focusing on the variance and confidence score of the training parameters of the proposed model. Design is a dynamic, decision-driven process, often guided by intuition and experience. It can be susceptible to cognitive biases, systematic deviations in information processing and decision making, which have been recognized as influential factors affecting expert judgment in multiple domains. Although some studies in the design field have investigated and proposed methods to address specific biases, such as the confirmation bias, there is currently no comprehensive approach in the literature to make designers aware of the various biases that may manifest during the design process. The main contribution of this article is to provide designers with a broad overview of the biases that may be involved within the three principal areas of design cognition: problem formulation, concept generation and concept evaluation. It also proposes a novel and workable methodology to facilitate designers' recognition and mitigation of biases through metacognition, while favoring the implementation of more specific correction strategies. Despite an increase in the availability of digital solutions, planners' remain at the center of the production planning and control (PPC) decision-making process and have to make numerous decisions involving different information. Due to the inherent complexities, planners' are supported by PPC systems to fulfil their tasks. Research has shown that humans are influenced by cognitive bias when making decisions, especially in uncertain and complex environments and when disruptions such as machine failures occur. Researchers have therefore proposed debiasing methods to reduce human errors in decision-making. However, there is currently no environment within this research to test these proposed methods. In this study, we aimed to take the first step toward closing this research gap. We combined existing PPC research with a systematic literature review on disruptions in production as well as perspectives from practice through interviews with 12 experts. As Industry 4.0 and 5.0 evolve to be highly automated but human-centric, there is a need for process modeling based on digital replicas of physical objects including humans. Knowledge distillation and cognitive cloning offer a way to train operational copies of decision-making black boxes, or donors, without requiring additional data. In this paper, we propose an architecture and analytics for a generative adversarial network, called Cloning-GAN, which enables donor-clone knowledge transfer, including the donor's individual biases. The architecture involves generating challenging samples to be labeled by the donor and used as training data for the clone. We consider several multicriteria requirements for the generated data, including closeness to the decision boundary, uniform distribution in the decision space, maximal confusion for the donor, and challenge for the clone. Background: Patients evaluated in an emergency department for suspected acute coronary syndromes (ACS; e.g., myocardial infarction) often experience a lingering fear of recurrence, which may adversely affect their mental health and adherence to recommended health behaviors. Cognitive bias modification training (CBMT) is an acceptable, easy-to-use intervention that reduces fear of recurrence in cancer patients, and reduces fear and anxiety in other populations, providing an alternative to psychotherapy or counseling-based approaches. Feasibility testing is needed to assess whether a cardiac-related version of CBMT is acceptable to patients with elevated threat perceptions related to their suspected ACS. Methods: We developed a tablet-based CBMT intervention tailored to reduce cardiac-related fear of recurrence. In this double-blinded feasibility trial, patients with elevated threat perceptions related to a recent suspected ACS were randomized either to a 4-week, 8-session, tablet-delivered intervention (CBMT) group or to a sham attention control group. Feasibility outcomes included the proportion of eligible patients who enrolled, drop-out rate, intervention compliance rate, acceptability/pleasantness and usability ratings, and task engagement (i.e., accuracy, response time). Results: Of 49 eligible patients with suspected ACS and elevated threat perceptions recruited from NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, over half (53.1%) enrolled after receiving a description of study procedures. Of the 26 randomized patients (mean age 59.15 years, 50% women), 2 patients (7.7%) dropped out. Additionally, 4 (15.4%) enrolled patients were not able to complete the tablet tasks, either due to difficulties with the technology or an inability to process the visually presented linguistic information at a sufficient speed. Still, among patients who returned the tablets (19 returned/20 received; 95%), most completed all assigned tablet tasks (intervention or control; 10/19; 52.6%), reporting that the tablets were easy to use and that the tasks were pleasant to complete. Conclusion: Current findings suggest that cardiac-related CBMT is a promising and generally acceptable intervention for suspected ACS patients with cardiac-related threat perceptions which are akin to fear of recurrence. Nevertheless, challenges related to tablet usage indicate that the intervention user-experience should be further refined to optimize usability. We study the effect of the Scottish three-verdict system (guilty, not guilty, not proven) and the Anglo-American two-verdict system (guilty, not guilty) on juror decisions by combining data sets from 10 mock trials reported in suitable studies. A logistic regression with random effects uses the exact number of convictions and acquittals in 10 mock trials from a total of 1778 jurors to reliably estimate the effect of verdict system. We found a statistically significant verdict effect suggesting that the odds for a conviction by a juror are about 0.6 times or 40% lower under the three-verdict system than under a conventional two-verdict system. Possible explanations and implications of this verdict effect are discussed. Explicitly prejudiced attitudes against Black Americans have declined gradually since the 1960s. Yet racial disparities and racial discrimination remain significant problems in the United States. How could discrimination and disparate outcomes remain constant even while racial prejudice decreased? Two prominent explanations have emerged to explain these puzzling trends. Sociologists have proposed that disparities and discrimination are perpetuated by systemic racism, or the policies, practices, and societal structures that disadvantage some racial groups compared with others. Simultaneously, psychologists have proposed that implicit biases may sustain discrimination even in the absence of explicit prejudice. In this essay, we explore newly discovered connections between systemic racism and implicit bias, how they challenge traditional views to reorient our understanding of implicit bias, and how they shed new light on strategies to reduce bias. Summary: People in developed countries have access to healthier food options. However, there is also an increasing availability of energy‐dense foods. While energy‐dense foods play a major role in food accessibility, their prevalence also escalates the obesogenic environment. This paper aims to understand the role of cognitive biases on food consumption from the view of calorie underestimation. Specifically, the study examines how consumers perceive food calorie content and how consumers interpret the claims on food packaging. 525 UK respondents were asked to evaluate five different food combinations. The average calorie estimations for each meal were compared with their actual calorie contents to identify underestimation/overestimation. T‐test was conducted, and logistic regression and linear regression were estimated. The results show that heuristic is often adopted in food selection. Foods are categorised into vice and virtue according to the different goals they support. The existence of virtue food options (e.g., fruit and vegetable) reduces the perceived calorie content of the meal. Likewise, nutrition and health claims such as low‐fat and zero‐sugar also decrease the calorie estimation, especially when the labelled food is unhealthy. Considering overeating is a consequence of calorie underestimation, consumers' knowledge of nutritional quality needs to be improved. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose - A separate study of the different behavioral biases does not allow for a full understanding of the complexity and stability of the heterogeneity of beliefs. Therefore, through a more global view of these anomalies, the authors wish to show that they can converge on a single concept, which is the heterogeneity of beliefs. Design/methodology/approach - It is therefore essential to stress that the importance of this study is mainly reflected in the methodological approach used in the construction and analysis of the map and not only in the results achieved. This contribution states that structural analysis, as a means of building the cognitive map, can facilitate the task of investors and other decision-makers, in the identification and analysis of the heterogeneity of beliefs that can therefore guide investors' strategy in decision-making. Findings - The authors have studied the behavior of the investor and its way of interpreting the information and the authors have emphasized the value of studying the concept of heterogeneity of beliefs in its complexity. So that part of the work seems to be relevant and crucial to filling, if you will, that void. In this sense, the authors have shown that behavioral abnormalities are multidimensional concepts: "self-deception", "cognitive bias", "emotional bias" and "social bias". Originality/value - In particular, this article will aim to achieve the objective of proposing a model for measuring the heterogeneity of beliefs. Undergraduate biology educators strive to understand how to best teach students the concepts of climate change. The root of this understanding is the establishment of what students know about climate change. This research aims to describe undergraduate biology students' conceptions of climate change and their argument practices and associated cognitive biases in how they think about the topic. We used qualitative conception interviews to obtain data from 26 American biology undergraduate students who predicted how climate change would affect a forested ecosystem after an average of 1° increase in Fahrenheit (0.5°C change) over 25 years. Through deductive coding, we found the majority of students' predictions agreed with expert ideas. However, the students used various argument strategies (i.e., Reasoning and Cognitive Biases) in defending their choices, including Ecological Explanations, Observations, Anchoring, and Contrast Effects. The visual allure of microscopy makes it an intuitively powerful research tool. Intuition, however, can easily obscure or distort the reality of the information contained in an image. Common cognitive biases, combined with institutional pressures that reward positive research results, can quickly skew a microscopy project towards upholding, rather than rigorously challenging, a hypothesis. The impact of these biases on a variety of research topics is well known. What might be less appreciated are the many forms in which bias can permeate a microscopy experiment. Even well-intentioned researchers are susceptible to bias, which must therefore be actively recognized to be mitigated. Importantly, although image quantification has increasingly become an expectation, ostensibly to confront subtle biases, it is not a guarantee against bias and cannot alone shield an experiment from cognitive distortions. Here, we provide illustrative examples of the insidiously pervasive nature of bias in microscopy experiments - from initial experimental design to image acquisition, analysis and data interpretation. Cognitive bias is defined as the influence of emotions on cognitive processes. The concept of the cognitive judgement bias has its origins in human psychology but has been applied to animals over the past 2 decades. In this study we were interested in determining if laterality and personality traits, which are known to influence learning style, might also be correlated with a cognitive bias in the three-spined sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus). We used the judgement bias test with the go/no-go procedure where fish were first trained to discriminate between a black and white card and, after reaching a minimum learning criterion, tested their response to an ambiguous card (grey). Optimistic subjects were expected to have a high expectation of reward associated with an ambiguous stimulus, whereas pessimistic subjects a high expectation of non-reward. We used an emergence and a mirror test to quantify boldness and laterality, respectively. We hypothesised that male, bolder and more strongly lateralized fish would be more optimistic than female, shy and less strongly lateralised fish. We found that males and more strongly lateralized fish were more optimistic than females and less strongly lateralized fish. In addition, bold males were more optimistic than shy males as we predicted, but females showed the opposite pattern. Finally, fish trained on the black colour card learned the training task faster than those trained on a white card. Our results indicate that both laterality and personality traits are linked to animals’ internal states (pessimistic or optimistic outlooks) which likely has broad implications for understanding animal behaviour particularly in a welfare context. The present study examined the effect of event segmentation on cognitive control mode use in a sample of older adults (N = 30; Mage = 73, SDage = 4.75) using a modified AX-Continuous Performance Test (AX-CPT). This task included a perceptual event boundary between each cue and its forthcoming probe by means of a spatial shift across the left and right side of the display. Past research showed that young adults' existing proactive control bias could be enhanced in an event segmented AX-CPT relative to their performance on a standard AX-CPT. For older adults who adopt reactive control by default, the event boundary was expected to impede cue-reactivation during probe presentation, and thus further enhance their existing reactive control bias. To examine this, older adults were tested with a standard and an event segmented AX-CPT in two blocks, with error rates revealing a shift toward greater reactive control use in the event segmented relative to the standard AX-CPT. Findings supported our hypothesis that placing a spatial event boundary between each cue and forthcoming probe would further enhance older adults' reactive control bias. This study contributes to the sparse but growing literature on the effects of task-specific manipulations on cognitive control use. Is it harmful to make generic claims about social groups? Those who say yes cite the reinforcement of oppressive stereotypes and cognitive bias. Those who say no cite the potential of generics to do good, rather than harm, by taking advantage of the same mechanisms that perpetuate the harms. This paper analyzes generic utterances in the context of social justice efforts to weigh in on the debate about whether and how generic utterances contribute to stereotypes and oppression. We need to first pay more attention to what it means to utter generics in social justice contexts. Doing so will allow us to distinguish those generic utterances that are helpful for social justice projects from those that might impede their progress. I argue that there is an important pragmatic sense in which generics can be undermined: especially generics used in service of social justice claims. I then offer an epistemic thesis for why some generics are more susceptible to being undermined by counter-examples than others. I conclude that if we are interested in using generics in the service of social justice, then there is reason to restrict the contexts in which we utter generics. Every decision depends on a forecast of its consequences. We examine the calibration of the single longest and most complete forecasting project. The Survey of Professional Forecasters has, since 1968, collected predictions of key economic indicators such as unemployment, inflation, and economic growth. Here, we test the accuracy of those forecasts (n = 16,559) and measure the degree to which they fall victim to overconfidence, both overoptimism and overprecision. We find forecasts are overly precise; forecasters report 53% confidence in the accuracy of their forecasts, but are correct only 23% of the time. By contrast, forecasts show little evidence of optimistic bias. These results have important implications for how organizations ought to make use of forecasts. Moreover, we employ novel methodology in analyzing archival data: we split our dataset into exploration and validation halves. We submitted results from the exploration half to Collabra:Psychology. Following editorial input, we updated our analysis plan for the validation dataset, preregistering only analyses that were consistent across different economic indicators and analytic specifications. Evidence-based vaccination communication aims to support people in making informed decisions regarding vaccination. It is therefore important to learn how vaccination information is processed and how it might be biased. One potentially relevant bias that is overlooked in the vaccination literature is the feature positive effect (FPE), the phenomenon that people experience greater difficulty processing nonoccurring events than occurring events, which impacts judgment and decision making. The present study adopts an experimental design with sequential testing rules to examine a potential FPE for vaccination information processing. The results convincingly demonstrate that vaccination-related events described as nonoccurring (e.g., no side effects after vaccination) versus occurring (e.g., side effects after vaccination) indeed result in lower recall and are perceived as less important in evaluating the vaccine. The results regarding processing time remain inconclusive. These findings might help explain the appeal of vaccination-critical information and suggest that emphasizing what does happen as a result of vaccination, rather than what does not, can help debias the processing of evidence-based vaccination information. The main objective of this research is to analyze the myside bias in two argument evaluation tasks: one linked to the paradigm of formal reasoning and the other linked to the paradigm of informal reasoning. For this, we develop and apply a reasoning test that combines formal reasoning tasks with informal reasoning tasks. The test was administered virtually to a total of 138 participants. The results confirmed the two hypotheses of the study, namely, that motivational mechanisms prevail over logical ability in the tasks of evaluating arguments (both deductive and non-deductive) and that the myside bias is significantly accentuated in the task of informal reasoning. Cognitive distortions are mental processes that affect individuals and partially govern their relationship with the world. They manifest themselves at a very early age and are directly influenced by an individual's early life experiences, from which implicit learning about the world and oneself occurs. This acquisition is personal and biased, leading to the formation of cognitive filters that individuals reinforce in a self-perpetuating cycle. The information selected depends on these filters, and the processing of this information depends on the subject's distortions. These mental processes are present in everyone; however, certain populations, such as individuals with anxiety or depressive symptoms, victims, or those with post-traumatic stress disorder, exhibit specificities based on their life experiences. In light of the various therapeutic approaches and treatments related to the cognitive dimension, we propose a syllogistic model for understanding how victims from different social backgrounds and with a victim status perceive and confront the world. Two clinical vignettes are provided to illustrate this model. Landscape-based Ecological Networks (EN) have been considered a conservation tool developed to contrast habitat fragmentation (HF) as an anthropogenic process. This approach, based on the "core-buffer-corridors" model, has been largely applied in the Northern world to plan human-dominated landscapes. However, an application of this process to the African continent should be carried out with criticism. When adopting the EN approach as a connectivity conservation tool, planners must remember that (i) it is important to be aware that "core-buffer-corridors" designs are species-specific, (ii) the identification of connective areas can be biased due to a "framing effect", (iii) planners and managers focus too much on areas of conservation concern and less on human-transformed sites where anthropogenic threats arise, (iv) ecological and social processes are dynamic and that it is necessary to apply a flexible approach, (v) ecologists only partially know the H F problem; therefore, they will have to involve experts from other disciplines, (vi) spatial patterns of HF may be determined by multiple threats, often historically overlapping, (viii) no planning solution can be exclusively top-down (i.e., only through governmental Agencies) and that, especially in areas of rapid urban expansion and demographic growth, local populations must be involved because they can make a difference in achieving conservation successes. The anchoring effect is the over-reliance on an initial piece of information when making decisions. It is one of the most pervasive and robust biases. Recently, literature has focused on knowing how influential the anchoring effect is when applied to information visualization, with studies finding its reproducibility in the field. Despite the extensive literature surrounding the anchoring effect's robustness, there is still a need for research on which individual differences make people more susceptible. We explore how Locus of Control influences visualization's ubiquitous and resilient anchoring effect. Locus of Control differentiates individuals who believe their life depends on their behavior or actions from those who blame outside factors such as destiny or luck for their life's outcomes. We focus on the relationship between Locus of Control and the anchoring effect by exposing subjects to an anchor and analyzing their interaction with a complex visualization. As the last fewyears have seen an increase in both online hostility and polarization,we need tomove beyond the fact-checking reflex or the praise for better moderation on social networking sites (SNS) and investigate their impact on social structures and social cohesion. In particular, the role of recommender systems deployed by Very Large Online Platforms (VLOPs) such as Facebook or Twitter has been overlooked. This paper draws on the literature on cognitive science, digital media, and opinion dynamics to propose a faithful replica of the entanglement between recommender systems, opinion dynamics and users’ cognitive bias on SNSs like Twitter that is calibrated over a large scale longitudinal database of tweets from political activists. This model makes it possible to compare the consequences of various recommendation algorithms on the social fabric, to quantify their interaction with some major cognitive bias. In particular,we demonstrate that the recommender systems that seek to solely maximize users’ engagement necessarily lead to a polarization of the opinion landscape, to a concentration of social power in the hands of the most toxic users and to an overexposure of users to negative content (up to 300% for some of them), a phenomenon called algorithmic negativity bias. Toxic users are more than twice as numerous in the top 1% of the most influential users than in the overall population. Overall, our results highlight the systemic risks generated by certain implementations of recommender systems and the urgent need to comprehensively identify implementations of recommender systems harmful to individuals and society. This study explores the influence of instructional interventions in mitigating mental accounting bias during capital investment decisions. Initially, we investigate the potential costly errors resulting from mental accounting. Subsequently, we employ instructional strategies to reduce this cognitive bias. Employing an experimental methodology, we employ an 8x2 mixed factorial design to examine the impact of financing sources on mental accounting and the effectiveness of instructional interventions. The findings reveal that managers prone to mental accounting tend to retain debt-financed assets over equity-financed assets. Importantly, instruction proves effective in alleviating this cognitive bias. This research holds significance for both academic scholars and practitioners. It sheds light on the deficiency of instructional resources in accounting education for fostering essential professional judgment skills among students. It is recommended that Finance, Business, and Accounting faculties incorporate modules on mental accounting and related cognitive biases in postgraduate programs. In my reflections about the disassembly of ideas and deteriorating education I shall make use of the concept of cognitive bias, the polemic about the contemporary university (Bill Readings), the concept of Jacques Lacan’s discourses, Hannah Arendt’s findings about willing and ideology, and Niklas Luhmann’s assumptions of social systems theory understood as autopoietic systems of codified rules of operation. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to propose a disruption claim management (DCM) life cycle and a risk management framework to provide comprehensive guidance to construction practitioners for facilitating effective and efficient DCM. Design/methodology/approach: DCM life cycle was initially developed through a focus group discussion (FGD) with the participation of the construction practitioners who have diverse experiences about DCM. The life cycle is comprised of 6 phases and also includes proper reactions of the owners and contractors. Then, 42 risk factors that can impact the deliverables of DCM were identified through a literature review and an additional FGD session. This was then followed by a Fuzzy Analytical Hierarchy Process (FAHP) which was performed to evaluate the importance of each risk factor in terms of the factor's impact on the success of DCM. Additionally, consistency analysis was performed to further maximize the reliability of the results. Findings: Findings revealed that a proactive and systematic approach should be adopted and DCM practices should be initiated before any disruption event is triggered. Accordingly, the proposed framework recommends DCM practices to be initiated early in the contract development phase since compensation for the disruption might be recovered only to the extent that the contract permits. The contract-related risks were given top priority by the experts so that the results of the fuzzy AHP analysis also verified the significance of the contract development phase. Besides contract-related risks, risks related to insufficient site observation, ignorance of the project team, cognitive bias and conflict of interest were determined as the most significant DCM risks, needing an urgent and sophisticated risk response plan. Lastly, results suggested that "Site observation and record-keeping" is the most formidable phase since the phase's implementation on a continuous basis could create unforeseen organizational challenges such as mismanagement of project records, especially in the dynamic and turbulent environment of the construction projects. Originality/value: Disruption – which is caused mostly by change – is inevitable in construction projects due to their sophisticated nature. DCM, therefore, becomes crucial to compensate losses of contractors and eliminate or diminish the prolonged dispute resolution process. Existing studies, however, do not provide a comprehensive theoretical basis for the DCM life cycle and DCM life cycle's potential risks so that DCM life cycle's promising benefits can hardly be materialized. Thus, developing a DCM life cycle and associating DCM life cycle with risk management, this study is highly believed to make a promising theoretical contribution to the DCM domain since this is one of the earliest attempts in the literature. Supply failures are persistent and costly in contemporary supply chains. Viewed through the lens of agency theory, such failures are potentially caused by hidden actions of the supplier under information asymmetry and goal incongruence in the buyer–supplier relationship (as principal–agent). However, by reversing the direction of information asymmetry, an alternative cause arises: hidden expectations, where the supplier has good intentions but incomplete information regarding the buyer's true preferences and specifications. Further, following a failure, the buyer forms a causal attribution and takes subsequent action. Yet these attributions suffer from cognitive biases potentially causing buyers to misattribute supply failures, leading to costly conflict and even relationship termination. Combining agency and attribution theories, this article develops a theoretical framework to explain antecedents to a buyer's attribution process under conditions of two‐sided asymmetric information. It discusses the harmful relationship effects of misattribution. The framework can assist in identifying and minimizing cognitive biases causing misattribution, hence avoiding the unintentional deterioration of relationships that often follow a supply failure. This essay examines the contributions of Abraham Cowley's poetry to the development of Royal Society scientific methods in the seventeenth century, particularly through Cowley's clarification of the forms of cognitive bias that Francis Bacon called "idols of the mind." We should understand many of Cowley's poetic choices and stylistic recommendations as part of an effort to illustrate and shape the cognitive habits necessary for experimental science in the Baconian tradition. Beyond stylistic recommendations, Cowley was interested in understanding what makes for accurate perception and reasoned judgment, both of which were essential to poets and experimental scientists alike in this formative period. This essay places Cowley's poetry in the context of seventeenth-century conventions for style and perception among experimental scientists and concludes by examining how Thomas Sprat, Royal Society historian and Cowley's literary executor, understood the value of Cowley's poetry to Royal Society epistemological aims. This study examines the influence of financial literacy, gender, annual family income and neuroticism personality trait on the probability of millennial equity investors to suffer from selected cognitive biases (availability bias, representative bias, mental accounting bias and anchoring and adjustment bias). Binary logistic regression method is applied to conduct the analysis. Results of the current study indicate that selected demographic factors and investor personality are significant in predicting the probability of millennial Indian investor to suffer from the biases under consideration. For availability bias, financial literacy; for representative bias, financial literacy, neuroticism and gender; for mental accounting bias, neuroticism, gender and annual family income; and for anchoring and adjustment bias, financial literacy, neuroticism, gender and annual family income are found as significant predictors. Evaluating judicial performances is a crucial, albeit often underappreciated element of judicial governance, as it incentivizes judges' productivity and allows for meritocratic career advancement within the judiciary. At the same time, judicial performance evaluation remains a daunting task, plagued by different recurring issues. Alongside the controversial nature of judicial merit and conflicting expectations as to their ultimate goal, methods of judicial evaluation are often saddled with specific technological limitations, such as the risk of cognitive bias and data intelligibility. To overcome these shortcomings, it may be useful to start thinking of judicial performance in terms of other enterprises where merit is similarly hard to assess and measure objectively. A relevant example is the comparison with scholarly work, which resembles judicial activity in that both are goal-oriented enterprises where quality assessment proves somewhat elusive. Cognizant of the difficulties, however, researchers and academic institutions have long developed tools to overcome limitations. Associative thinking with scholarly research could thus yield positive ideas for innovating the assessment of judges' work, one prime example being the import of scholarly blind "peer" review processes to judicial performance evaluations. The visualization of 2D clinical data often relies on color-coded images, but different colormaps can introduce cognitive biases, impacting result interpretation. Moreover, when using color for diagnosis with multiple biomarkers, the application of distinct colormaps for each parameter can hinder comparisons. Our aim was to introduce a visualization technique that utilizes the hue (H), saturation (S), and value (V) in a single image to convey multi-parametric data on various optical properties in an effective manner. To achieve this, we conducted a study involving two datasets, one comprising multi-modality measurements of the human aorta and the other featuring multiple parameters of dystrophic mice muscles. Through this analysis, we determined that H is best suited to emphasize differences related to pathology, while V highlights high-spatial-resolution data disparities, and color alterations effectively indicate changes in chemical component concentrations. Furthermore, encoding structural information as S and V within the same image assists in pinpointing the specific locations of these variations. In cases where all data are of a high resolution, H remains the optimal indicator of pathology, ensuring results' interpretability. Artificial intelligence (AI) in the form of ChatGPT has rapidly attracted attention from physicians and medical educators. While it holds great promise for more routine medical tasks, may broaden one's differential diagnosis, and may be able to assist in the evaluation of images, such as radiographs and electrocardiograms, the technology is largely based on advanced algorithms akin to pattern recognition. One of the key questions raised in concert with these advances is: What does the growth of artificial intelligence mean for medical education, particularly the development of critical thinking and clinical reasoning? In this commentary, we will explore the elements of cognitive theory that underlie the ways in which physicians are taught to reason through a diagnostic case and compare hypothetico-deductive reasoning, often employing illness scripts, with inductive reasoning, which is based on a deeper understanding of mechanisms of health and disease. Issues of cognitive bias and their impact on diagnostic error will be examined. The constructs of routine and adaptive expertise will also be delineated. The application of artificial intelligence to diagnostic problem solving, along with concerns about racial and gender bias, will be delineated. Using several case examples, we will demonstrate the limitations of this technology and its potential pitfalls and outline the direction medical education may need to take in the years to come. Goal: This article proposes a decision model based on the Analytic Hierarchy Process that allows carrying out the evaluation of alternatives in a multicriteria problem, without expert judgement. Design / Methodology / Approach: The algorithm is based on AHP. The novelty is the transformation of a performance data matrix into pairwise evaluation matrices, instead of using experts'judgement. Results: The algorithm was applied in a defense procurement problem for the choice of a light 4x4 vehicle for amphibious operations. The results allowed ranking the 17 models based on catalog data. Limitations of the investigation: the algorithm depends on the availability of catalog data, not always available in open sources in the defense industry. Practical implications: Decision support involves several activities in Operations Management and AHP has been frequently applied to solve problems in this sector. The proposed algorithm allows performing deterministic or probabilistic evaluations, depending on the degree of uncertainty and precision involving the systems' performance data. These assessments are composed of scenarios to facilitate decision making. Originality / Value: AHP typically uses experts for pairwise judgments. However, human judgment is subject to outcomes that involve bias and cognitive distortions. Few studies have modeled the AHP without experts, even so they used human judgment in some part of the process. The approach proposed here does not require human judgment and returns two different results, based on the database precision. The recently introduced concept of supply chain entrepreneurial embeddedness (SCEE) refers to the extent to which large firms integrate entrepreneurial capabilities into their supply chains. Achieving a higher degree of SCEE can involve assimilating entrepreneurial practices by copying entrepreneurial firms' behavior, allying with entrepreneurial firms to gain access to and learn from them, and acquiring entrepreneurial firms to bring their practices inside the firm. Because SCEE appears to be a pathway to enhanced firm performance, enhancing SCEE should be attractive. However, our thesis is that efforts to do so may be undermined by cognitive biases—heuristics used by the human mind to simplify complex situations that result in distorted thinking. We explore the possible problems arising due to 11 cognitive biases discussed by Schwenk (Strategic Management Journal, 1984, 5(2), 111). We offer two brief case examples of companies that are seeking to make their supply chains more entrepreneurial; each illustrates several of the biases in action. We also consider whether supply chain complexity and entrepreneurial orientation can mitigate or strengthen cognitive biases' harmful effects on SCEE. This article uses survey experiments to assess whether administrative procedures fix cognitive bias. We focus on two procedural requirements: qualitative reason-giving and quantitative cost-benefit analysis (CBA). Both requirements are now firmly entrenched in the U.S. federal regulation-making. Multilateral organizations such as the World Bank, OECD, and EU have encouraged their broad diffusion across many national contexts. Yet CBA, in particular, remains controversial. Supporters of CBA claim it leads to more rational regulation, with Sunstein (2000) asserting that CBA can reduce cognitive biases. By contrast, we argue that procedures should be conceptualized as imperfect substitutes subject to diminishing marginal benefits. To test and illustrate this argument, we examine how each procedure individually and cumulatively modulates gain–loss framing, partisan-motivated reasoning, and scope insensitivity in a nationally representative sample. We find that one or both procedures decreased cognitive bias. CBA was the most helpful against partisan reasoning whereas reason-giving did little. Both procedures seem comparably effective against the other biases, although in each case only one of the two procedures produced reductions distinguishable from zero. We only find substantial synergies between the two procedures with respect to gain–loss framing. For the other biases, the combination of both procedures did not generate significant reductions over and above that achieved by the more effective procedure alone. We hypothesize that procedures will only fix cognitive biases if they disrupt bias-inducing mental processes, and we reconcile this proposition with our findings. Do large language models (LLMs) display rational reasoning? LLMs have been shown to contain human biases due to the data they have been trained on; whether this is reflected in rational reasoning remains less clear. In this paper, we answer this question by evaluating seven language models using tasks from the cognitive psychology literature. We find that, like humans, LLMs display irrationality in these tasks. However, the way this irrationality is displayed does not reflect that shown by humans. When incorrect answers are given by LLMs to these tasks, they are often incorrect in ways that differ from human-like biases. On top of this, the LLMs reveal an additional layer of irrationality in the significant inconsistency of the responses. Aside from the experimental results, this paper seeks to make a methodological contribution by showing how we can assess and compare different capabilities of these types of models, in this case with respect to rational reasoning.

The aim of this experimental research was to explore if the future HR managers are susceptible to the base rate neglect (BRN) bias and if the visual presentation of the base rates improves their reasoning. The BRN bias is a tendency to disregard a priori probabilities that are explicitly given for the class of observed objects. In this study, BRN is seen as the case of decision-making bias in the work-related context. Although it is inevitable part of the decision-making processes concerning employees`, the topic is not sufficiently studied. A total of 65 participants, enrolled in the master studies of HRM, were subjected to 4 different types of BRN tasks, in which five different HR activities were described. They were varied within subjects, representativeness of description, and format of base rate. Within each task there were five different situations that make 20 tasks in total. The two-way repeated-measures ANOVA revealed that the proportion of biased answers was significantly higher on the representative tasks when the tasks presented visually, with no interaction between representativeness and format of task. Results are in line with previous studies that observed an effect of BRN on decision-making process. Yet, unexpectedly, visual presentation of base rates did not facilitate unbiased reasoning implying that some other form of presentation might be more appropriate for the task.

Consumers tend to see themselves in a positive light, yet we present evidence that they are pessimistic about whether they will receive a product's benefits. In 15 studies (N  =   6,547; including nine preregistered), we found that consumers believe that product efficacy is higher for others than it is for themselves. For example, consumers believe that consuming a sports drink (to satisfy thirst), medicine (to relieve pain), an online class (to learn something new), or an adult coloring book (to inspire creativity) will have a greater effect on others than on themselves. We show that this bias holds across many kinds of products and judgment-targets, and inversely correlates with factors such as product familiarity, product usefulness, and relationship closeness with judgment-targets. Moreover, we find this bias stems from consumers' beliefs they are more unique and less malleable than others, and that it alters the choices people make for others. We conclude by discussing implications for research on gift-giving, advice-giving, usership, and interpersonal social, health, and financial choices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
