BACKGROUND Acrylamide ( AA) is of concern worldwide because of its neurotoxicity, genotoxicity and reproductive/developmental toxicity. Consequently, methods for minimizing AA formation during food processing are vital. RESULTS In this study, the formation and elimination of AA in an asparagine/glucose low-moisture model system were investigated by response surface methodology. The effect of garlic powder on the kinetics of AA formation/elimination was also evaluated. The AA content reached a maximum level (674.0 nmol) with 1.2 mmol of glucose and 1.2 mmol of asparagine after heating at 200 °C for 6 min. The AA content was greatly reduced with the addition of garlic powder. Compared to without garlic powder, an AA reduction rate of 43% was obtained with addition of garlic powder at a mass fraction of 0.05 g. Garlic powder inhibited AA formation during the generation-predominant kinetic stage and had no effect on the degradation-predominant kinetic stage. The effect of garlic powder on AA formation in bread and bread quality was also investigated. Adding a garlic powder mass fraction of 15 g to 500 g of dough significantly ( P < 0.05) reduced the formation of AA (reduction rate of 46%) and had no obvious effect on the sensory qualities of the bread. A miniaturized and low-coupled tripolarized microstrip multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna working at 3.5 GHz is proposed. This antenna includes a main circular radiating patch, which is shorted to the ground plane by an outer layer of vias, and a parasitic patch inside the cavity, which is connected to the main patch by an inner layer of vias. Through the selection of suitable number of the outer layer vias and the loading of the parasitic patch, the resonant frequencies of modes TM11 and TM02 can be reduced, individually. The design procedure of this antenna is demonstrated and a transmission-line model for TM02 mode is presented, which can give a good explanation for the frequency reducing by the capacitance introduced by parasitic patch loading. This design can not only downsize the diameter of the unloaded antenna from $0.7\lambda _{0}$ to $0.485\lambda _{0}$ , with the same height of $0.035\lambda _{0}$ , but also can reduce the interport coupling from −13 to −18 dB. The measured and simulated S-parameters and radiation patterns are in good agreements. Fine MIMO performance of the proposed tripolarized antenna in terms of large capacity and low correlation coefficients has been verified by some propagation measurements in a real-world office. Background: Dyslipidaemia has always been regarded as the cornerstone of arteriosclerosis and is related to the pathogenesis of renal insufficiency. However, it is unclear which routinely available lipid parameter is related to urinary albumin to creatinine ratio (UACR). The purpose of this study was to examine the lipid abnormalities associated with UACR in the general population in China. Methods: The present study was nested in an ongoing Risk Evaluation of cAncers in Chinese diabetic Individuals: A lONgitudinal (REACTION) study, which was designed to demonstrate the association of abnormal glucose metabolism with the risk of cancer in the Chinese population. This cross-sectional study included 34, 569 subjects (11, 390 males and 23, 179 females) from 8 different regional community cohorts, with an average age of 57.9 years. The UACR data were divided into the < 25% group, the 25–49% group, the 50–74% group, and the ≥ 75% group according to the quartile division of the centre where the subjects visited. The lipid classes were defined according to the guidelines for the prevention and treatment of dyslipidaemia in Chinese adults. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the association of the lipid parameters and UACR. Results: Multivariable regression analysis revealed that compared with the other lipid parameters, triglycerides (TG) showed an adjusted odds ratio that was significant in model 1–4. This relationship was attenuated after adjusting for Haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and blood pressure (BP), but TG ≥ 2.3 mmol/L was still significantly associated with UACR in total subjects and in both men and women (OR: 1.131, 95% CI 1.065–1.203, P < 0.001 in total subjects; OR: 1.134, 95% CI 1.022–1.258, P = 0.017 in men; OR: 1.129, 95% CI 1.046–1.219, P = 0.002 in women). In the stratified analysis, elevated TG was significantly associated with increased urinary albumin in subjects with eGFR ≥ 90 mL/min per 1.73 m2, 5.6 ≤ FBG < 7.0 or 7.8 ≤ PBG < 11.1 mmol/L, 24 ≤ BMI < 28 kg/m2, 120 ≤ SBP < 140 and/or 80 ≤ DBP < 90 mmHg. Conclusions: We conclude that high TG levels rather than total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, or non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels are associated with UACR in the general population in China. Pneumatic artificial muscles (PAMs) have been widely used in actuation of medical devices due to their intrinsic compliance and high power-to-weight ratio features. However, the nonlinearity and time-varying nature of PAMs make it challenging to maintain high-performance tracking control. In this article, a high-order pseudopartial derivative-based model-free adaptive iterative learning controller (HOPPD-MFAILC) is proposed to achieve fast convergence speed. The dynamics of PAM is converted into a dynamic linearization model during iterations; meanwhile, a high-order estimation algorithm is designed to estimate the pseudopartial derivative component of the linearization model by only utilizing the input and output data in previous iterations. The stability and convergence performance of the controller are verified through theoretical analysis. Simulation and experimental results on PAM demonstrate that the proposed HOPPD-MFAILC can track the desired trajectory with improved convergence and tracking performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Glioblastoma (GBM) is identified as a lethal malignant tumor derived from the nervous system. Despite the standard clinical strategy including maximum surgical resection, temozolomide (TMZ) chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, the median survival of GBM patients remains <15 months. Accumulating evidence indicates that rapid‐acquired radioresistance is one of the most common reasons for GBM recurrence. Therefore, developing novel therapeutic targets for radioresistant GBM could yield long‐term cures. Aims: To investigate the functional role of CXCL1 in the acquired radioresistance and identify the molecular pathway correlated to CXCL1. Results: In this study, we identified that CXCL1 is highly expressed in GBM and the elevation of CXCL1 is involved in radioresistance and poor prognosis in GBM patients. Additionally, silencing CXCL1 attenuated the proliferation and radioresistance of GBM cells. Furthermore, we demonstrated that CXCL1‐overexpression induced radioresistance through mesenchymal transition of GBM via the activation of nuclear factor‐kappa B (NF‐κB) signaling. Conclusion: CXCL1 was highly enriched in GBM and positively correlated with poor prognosis in GBM patients. Numerous drought indices have been developed over the past several decades. However, few studies have focused on the suitability of indices for studies of ephemeral wetlands. The objective is to answer the following question: can the traditional large-scale drought indices characterize drought severity in shallow water wetlands such as the Everglades? The question was approached from two perspectives: the available water quantity and the response of wetland ecosystems to drought. The results showed the unsuitability of traditional large-scale drought indices for characterizing the actual available water quantity based on two findings. (1) Large spatial variations in precipitation (P), potential evapotranspiration (PE), water table depth (WTD) and the monthly water storage change (SC) were observed in the Everglades; notably, the spatial variation in SC, which reflects the monthly water balance, was 1.86 and 1.62 times larger than the temporal variation between seasons and between years, respectively. (2) The large-scale water balance measured based on the water storage variation had an average indicating efficiency (IE) of only 60.01% due to the redistribution of interior water. The spatial distribution of variations in the Normalized Different Vegetation Index (NDVI) in the 2011 dry season showed significantly positive, significantly negative and weak correlations with the minimum WTD in wet prairies, graminoid prairies and sawgrass wetlands, respectively. Frequency measurement is one of the key techniques in high-precision data acquisition technology of broadband signals. Generally, frequency measurement not only needs to deal with a large amount of data processing but also requires a high precision, but these two aspects are sometimes difficult to reconcile. Some algorithms are overly dependent on the accuracy of the to-be-measured data, which might not be the desired option for real projects since it is almost impossible to get ideal error-free data. This article adopts a frequency measurement method based on the coordinate rotation digital computer algorithm, differential algorithm, and Kalman filter. The use of these algorithms for the frequency measurement process would not only simplify the calculation but also reduce the effect of the measurement error. This method can measure all signals that satisfy the sampling theorem and can also measure multi-channel parallel signals. The experimental results of data simulation and actual measurement on the hardware platform show that the accurate frequency measurement algorithm has a strong data processing ability, stable measurement, and steady improvement in the accuracy of measurement results, which can meet the needs of most instruments for accurate frequency measurement. Background: Mitochondrial fission regulator 2 (MTFR2) was involved in the progression and development of various cancers. However, the relationship between MTFR2 with lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) had not been reported. Herein, this study analyzed the clinical significance and potential mechanisms of MTFR2 in LUAD via bioinformatics tools.Results: We found that the level of MTFR2 was increased, and correlated with sex, age, smoking history, neoplasm staging, histological subtype and TP53 mutation status in LUAD patients. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis showed LUAD patients with increased MTFR2 had a poor prognosis. In addition, univariate COX regression analysis showed neoplasm staging, T stage, distant metastasis and MTFR2 level were risk factors for the prognosis of LUAD. A total of 1127 genes were coexpressed with MTFR2, including 840 positive and 208 negative related genes. KEGG and GSEA found that MTFR2 participated in the progression of LUAD by affecting cell cycle, DNA replication, homologous recombination, p53 signaling pathway and other mechanisms. The top 10 coexpressed genes, namely CDK1, CDC20, CCNB1, PLK1, CCNA2, AURKB, CCNB2, BUB1B, MAD2L1 and BUB1 were highly expressed, and were associated with poor prognosis in LUAD.Conclusions: Consequently, we elucidated MTFR2 was a biomarker for diagnosis and poor prognosis in LUAD, and might participate in the progression of LUAD via affecting cell cycle, DNA replication, homologous recombination and p53 signaling pathway. Background and Purpose: The cytokine activin C is mainly expressed in small‐diameter dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons and suppresses inflammatory pain. However, the effects of activin C in neuropathic pain remain elusive. Experimental Approach Male rats and wild‐type and TRPV1 knockout mice with peripheral nerve injury ‐ sciatic nerve axotomy and spinal nerve ligation in rats; chronic constriction injury (CCI) in mice – provided models of chronic neuropathic pain. Ipsilateral lumbar (L)4–5 DRGs were assayed for activin C expression. Chronic neuropathic pain animals were treated with intrathecal or locally pre‐administered activin C or the vehicle. Nociceptive behaviours and pain‐related markers in L4–5 DRGs and spinal cord were evaluated. TRPV1 channel modulation by activin C was measured. Key Results: Following peripheral nerve injury, expression of activin βC subunit mRNA and activin C protein was markedly up‐regulated in L4–5 DRGs of animals with axotomy, SNL or CCI. Local pre‐administration of activin C decreased neuropathic pain, macrophage infiltration into ipsilateral L4–5 DRGs and microglial reaction in L4–5 spinal cords of mice with CCI. In rat DRG neurons, activin C enhanced capsaicin‐induced TRPV1 currents. Pre‐treatment with activin C reduced capsaicin‐evoked acute hyperalgesia and normalized capsaicin‐evoked persistent hypothermia in mice. Finally, the analgesic effect of activin C was abolished in TRPV1 knockout mice with CCI. This paper uses polypropylene (PP) as the matrix and acrylic acid (AA) and maleic anhydride (MAH) as functional monomers to prepare PP-g-(AA-MAH) fibers by suspension grafting and melt-blown spinning technology that are easy to industrially scale-up. The fibers can be used to adsorb aniline. Results showed that the grafting ratio reached the maximum of 12.47%. The corresponding optimal conditions were grafting time of 3 h, AA: MAH = 0.75, total monomer content of 55%, benzoyl peroxide 1.4%, xylene concentration of 6 mL/g PP, and deionized water content of 8 mL/g PP. Owing to its good fluidity and thermal stability, the product of suspension grafting can be used for melt-blown spinning. Infrared spectroscopic and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic analyses indicated that AA and MAH were successfully grafted onto PP fibers. After grafting, the hydrophilicity of PP-g-(AA-MAH) fiber increased. Therefore, it had higher absorptivity for aniline and the adsorption capacity could reach 42.2 mg/g at 45 min and pH = 7. Recent studies have demonstrated that aberrant expression or activation of kinases results in oncogenesis of a wide range of cancers including GBM. Inhibition of kinases expression induces a reduction of therapy resistance. In this study, we investigate the underlying mechanism by which glioblastoma (GBM) cells acquire resistance to Temozolomide (TMZ) through Aurora kinase B (AURKB) thus to identify novel therapeutic targets and prognostic biomarkers for GBM. AURKB was identified as a key candidate kinase-encoding gene in chemoresistance regulation by using kinome-wide bioinformatic analysis. Afterwards, the potential biological functions of AURKB in oncogenesis and chemoresistance were investigated by lentivirus-dependent silencing of AURKB combined with qRT-PCR, western blot and in vivo intra-cranial xenograft mice models. Additionally, immunohistochemistry (IHC) assays were performed to explore the clinical significance of AURKB in glioma patients. Lastly, Chou-Talalay method was used to confirm the synergistic effect of TMZ combined with AURKB inhibitor. AURKB was among the most significantly up-regulated kinase-coding genes in TMZ resistant GBM cells according to database GSE68029, moreover, an increased expression of AURKB was closely associated with poor prognosis in glioma and GBM patients. AURKB knock-down resensitized U87 resistant cells to TMZ both in vitro and in vivo. Additionally, the combination of TMZ and Hesperadin, a specific AURKB inhibitor, significantly suppressed the proliferation of TMZ resistant GBM cells thus dramatically prolonged the survival of xenograft mice via a synergistic effect with TMZ. Elevated AURKB expression was strongly correlated to TMZ resistant acquisition and poor prognosis, furthermore, targeting AURKB would be a potential therapeutic target for GBM patients. To investigate the underlying mechanism by which glioblastoma (GBM) cells gain temozolomide (TMZ) resistance and to clarify novel therapeutic targets and new prognostic biomarkers for GBM. A genome-wide hierarchical bi-clustering based on previously published microarray databases identified Nuclear Factor I A (NFIA) as one of the most significantly upregulated genes correlated to TMZ resistance in GBM. Then, the potential biological functions of NFIA in oncogenesis and chemoresistance were clarified by qRT-PCR, Western blotting and in vivo xenograft models with artificially induced TMZ-resistant U87 cells. Additionally, immunohistochemistry (IHC) assays were performed to explore the clinical significance of NFIA in glioma patients. Last, luciferase reporter assay was performed to study the transcriptional regulation of NFIA on the nuclear factor κb (NF-kB) pathway. NFIA was correlated with TMZ resistance in GBM. Clinically, elevated NFIA expression was significantly correlated with adverse outcomes of glioma patients, especially in GBM patients. Moreover, NFIA contributed to the acquired TMZ resistance of GBM cells, while suppression of NFIA via lentivirus reduced cell proliferation, tumorigenesis and resistance to TMZ of GBM. Additionally, NFIA promoted transcription activity that regulated the expression of NF-kB. Last, NFIA induced phosphorylation of NF-kB p65 at serine 536, thus inducing TMZ resistance in GBM cells. Altogether, our study suggests that NFIA-dependent transcriptional regulation of NF-kB contributes to acquired TMZ resistance in GBM. Abnormally activated NFIA-NF-kB signaling was strongly correlated with acquired TMZ resistance and poor prognosis in GBM, and it could be a new therapeutic target for TMZ-resistant GBM. Purpose: To explore the antihyperglycemic and antioxidant effects of Fructus Hordei Germinatus extract (FHGE) in diabetic rats. Methods: The aqueous extract of FHG was obtained by steeping the dried Fructus Hordei Germinatus in water at 60 oC three times, each for 1 h before first drying in an oven and then freeze-drying the last extract thus obtained. Antihyperglycemic effect was measured by blood glucose and plasma insulin levels. Oxidative stress was evaluated in liver and kidney by antioxidant markers, viz, lipid peroxidation (LPO), superoxide dismutase (SOD), reduced glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and catalase (CAT), while blood serum levels of creatinine and urea were also determined in both diabetic control and treated rats. Results: Compared with diabetic rats, oral administration of FHGE at a concentration of 20, 40 and 80 mg/kg daily for 45 days showed a significant decrease in fasting blood glucose (p < 0.05) and increased insulin (p < 0.05) level,. Furthermore, it significantly reduced biochemical parameters (serum creatinine and serum urea, p < 0.05)). The treatment also resulted in significant increase in GSH, GPx (p < 0.05), SOD and CAT (p < 0.05), as well as decreased LPO (p < 0.05) level in the liver and kidney of diabetic rats. Conclusion: The results suggest that FHGE may effectively normalize the impaired antioxidant status in streptozotocin-induced diabetes in a dose-dependent manner. [Display omitted] • CoP/g-C 3 N 4 hybrid photocatalyst was prepared in which CoP acts as a noble-metal-free HER cocatalyst. • CoP/g-C 3 N 4 composite exhibits high dye-sensitized photocatalytic HER activity and stability. • Photogenerated electrons can effectively transfer among EY, g-C 3 N 4 and CoP. • The AQY of 56.3% at 420 nm is achieved under the optimized conditions. In this paper, CoP/g-C 3 N 4 composite photocatalysts were prepared, in which CoP was used as a noble-metal-free cocatalyst. Using dye Eosin Y (EY) as the sensitizer and triethanolamine (TMA) as the electron donor, the performance of the photocatalytic H 2 evolution reaction (HER) under visible light (λ ≥ 420 nm) was investigated. When the loading of CoP is 5 wt%, the CoP(5 wt%)/g-C 3 N 4 composite shows the best photocatalytic HER performance, even better than that of Pt(5 wt%)/g-C 3 N 4. The apparent quantum yield (AQY) achieves 56.3% under 420 nm light irradiation, one of the best values reported for noble-metal-free cocatalysts in the dye-sensitized HER system, and the catalyst also exhibits good stability under 36 h of irradiation. The high activity and stability of CoP(5 wt%)/g-C 3 N 4 are the results of efficient electron transfer among photoexcited EY, g-C 3 N 4 and CoP, and the excellent HER activity of CoP.
