The article presents information about lead pollution in Taiwan. Lead is mainly used in lead batteries and as an additive in pesticides, paints, toys and water pipes. In Taiwan the main sources of lead pollution have been lead manufacturing and recovering industries. Lead pollution can contaminate the atmosphere, soil and water system. It enters the human body through the food chain. Improper treatment of the lead emission into the air and discharge into soil/water system has resulted in serious contamination in Taiwan.

Post-fabrication heat treatment has been found as an effective means for controlling the size distribution of Tb-doped Gd[sub 2]O[sub 3] nanoparticles. Variations in the electronic structure and structural order of these doped quantum dots are investigated by using the techniques of X-ray excited luminescence and diffraction. From room temperature to 1000°C X-ray powder diffraction of this nanoparticle system shows a three-stage transition from featureless data to that of the bulk crystalline structure with increasing particle size. However, substantial changes found in the X-ray excited luminescence are not directly related to the crystalline structure of the nanoparticles. These observations also indicate that bulk-like crystalline phase of the quantum dot material is not a necessary condition for generating the X-ray induced optical effects which are useful for some technological applications. Abstract Conformations of polyomavirus (Py) major capsid protein VP1 were analyzed by circular dichroisrn (CD) and fluorescence spectroscopy in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). Binding of PyVP1 to SDS induced marked conformational changes of PyVP1, which were reflected on the CD and fluorescence spectra. Abrupt changes in both optical properties occurred within the narrow ranges of SDS concentrations with the transition midpoints closely related to SDS micelle formation. Analysis of circular dichroism spectra showed that the contents of 2-helices, α-sheets, β-turns and random coils in PyVP1 varied upon addition of SDS, demonstrating the exquisite sensitivity of the conformations of the protein to the environment. The interactions of PyVP1 with SOS were shown to be dependent on the ionic strength of the protein solution, suggesting that both hydrophobic and electrostatic forces contribute to the PyVP1-SDS complex formation. The SDS-induced conformational changes of PyVP1 appeared to be a two-stage process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

209. Segregation and morphological instability due to double-diffusive convection in rotational directional solidification

- Abstract
Through computer simulation and direct observation of the freezing interface during directional solidification of succinonotrile (SCN) containing acetone on a rotating table, the effect of double-diffusive flows caused by gravitational and centrifugal forces on solute transport and morphological instability is investigated. Without rotation, the concave interface caused by solidification-induced buoyant convection resulted in local solute accumulation at the center of the interface. This led to pit formation and accelerated morphological breakdown. At medium rotation rate, the convection near the interface was suppressed, but the fast buildup of the solute caused much larger interface deformation and earlier morphological breakdown. However, if the rotation rate was high enough, the flow direction near the interface could be reversed, and solute accumulation slowed down. Pit formation was eliminated as well.

- Abstract
We report the results of a small-angle neutron scattering study into the structure of the adsorbed layers formed at the interface in a dilute perfluorodecalin-in-water emulsion by five short chain diblock copolymers of oxyethylene (OE) and oxybutylene (OB) (OE
26 OB13 , OE29 OB11 , OE30 OB7 , OE27 OB6 , and OE58 OB13 ). The results are discussed in the context of the Marques−Joanny−Leibler scaling description of block copolymer adsorption from selective solvents and provide an insight into the validity of the theory in the unusual limit of short chain lengths and small anchor blocks, close to the boundary between the buoy-dominated and the van der Waals−buoy regimes. The volume fraction profiles are best described by parabolic and, to a lesser extent, Gaussian functional forms. When the temperature was increased, the buoy blocks were found to contract toward the surface, giving rise to profiles that were more blocklike, in accordance with theoretical predictions by Wijmans and Zhulina (Macromolecules1993 , 26, 7214).- Published

- Abstract
Grain sorghum (Sorghum bicolor(L.) Moench], is reported to be less tolerant to salt than the noxious weed and potential biomass energy crop, johnsongrass [S. halepense(L.) Pers.). The objective was to compare callus growth and osmotic responses to salinity of these two sorghum species. Callus was grown for 2 wk in a liquid Murashige and Skoog medium to which NaCl was added to final concentrations of 0.05,0.1, and 0.15 M. Relative fresh weight growth of callus in response to increased salinity in the culture medium was greater in S. halepensethan in S. bicolor. After 2 wk of NaCl treatment, brown coloration and apparent necrosis were observed on callus of S. bicolorbut not on that of S. halepense. The Na/K ratios were lower in callus of S. halepensethan that of S. bicolorat all NaCl concentrations. Total amino acids in salinized callus did not change, but proline increased; this increase was greater in S. halepensecallus than in that of S. bicolor. Levels of Na and Cl were larger in S. halepensecallus treated with 0.1S mMNaCl and these were associated with a ψpof 0.40 MPa, whereas a ψpof 0.26 MPa was observed in callus of S. bicolor. Accumulation of NaCl accounted for three‐fourths of the solutes involved in osmotic adjustment in the callus of both species. Growth and Na/K ratios in salinized callus in this study were correlated with whole plant responses determined in another study. Callus growth and Na/K ratios could therefore be used as indicators of whole plant salt tolerance in Sorghum.

220. Transforming growth factor-beta-induced growth inhibition and cellular hypertrophy in cultured vascular smooth muscle cells.

- Abstract
We have explored the hypothesis that hypertrophy of vascular smooth muscle cells may be regulated, in part, by growth inhibitory factors that alter the pattern of the growth response to serum mitogens by characterizing the effects of the potent growth inhibitor, transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta), on both hyperplastic and hypertrophic growth of cultured rat aortic smooth muscle cells. TGF-beta inhibited serum-induced proliferation of rat aortic smooth muscle cells (ED50 = 2 pM); this is consistent with previously reported observations in bovine aortic smooth muscle cells (Assoian et al. 1982. J. Biol. Chem. 258:7155-7160). Growth inhibition was due in part to a greater than twofold increase in the cell cycle transit time in cells that continued to proliferate in the presence of TGF-beta. TGF-beta concurrently induced cellular hypertrophy as assessed by flow cytometric analysis of cellular protein content (47% increase) and forward angle light scatter (32-50% increase), an index of cell size. In addition to being time and concentration dependent, this hypertrophy was reversible. Simultaneous flow cytometric evaluation of forward angle light scatter and cellular DNA content demonstrated that TGF-beta-induced hypertrophy was not dependent on withdrawal of cells from the cell cycle nor was it dependent on growth arrest of cells at a particular point in the cell cycle in that both cycling cells in the G2 phase of the cell cycle and those in G1 were hypertrophied with respect to the corresponding cells in vehicle-treated controls. Chronic treatment with TGF-beta (100 pM, 9 d) was associated with accumulation of cells in the G2 phase of the cell cycle in the virtual absence of cells in S phase, whereas subsequent removal of TGF-beta from these cultures was associated with the appearance of a significant fraction of cycling cells with greater than 4c DNA content, consistent with development of tetraploidy. Results of these studies support a role for TGF-beta in the control of smooth muscle cell growth and suggest that at least one mechanism whereby hypertrophy and hyperploidy may occur in this, as well as other cell types, is by alterations in the response to serum mitogens by potent growth inhibitors such as TGF-beta.

Three oxyethylene/oxybutylene triblock copolymers of similar E-block length but different B-block lengths (B
4 E40 B4 , B5 E39 B5 , and B7 E40 B7 ) were prepared by sequential anionic polymerization and characterized by gel permeation chromatography and NMR spectroscopy. Their association in aqueous solution was investigated by static and dynamic light scattering, and evidence was found for small molecular associates, micelles, and micelle clusters (bridged micelles). - Abstract
The association properties of block copolymers of ethylene oxide (E) and 1,2-butylene oxide (B) manufactured by The Dow Chemical Company were studied by static and dynamic light scattering. The critical micelle concentrations and micelle association numbers so obtained were combined with literature values for related copolymers in order to discuss the effect of block architecture on the association properties of linear diblock and triblock copolymers. The measurements significantly increase the available data for E
m Bn Em triblock copolymers and provide new insight into effects caused by E-block distributions originating from the different rates of reaction of ethylene oxide with primary and secondary oxyanions during copolymerization.- Published

- Abstract
BRL-3A rat liver cells synthesize mature 7484-dalton rat insulin-like growth factor II (rIGF-II) as a approximately 22-kDa precursor, presumably prepro-rIGF-II. In the present study, we have biosynthetically labeled intact BRL-3A cells with [35S]cysteine and immunoprecipitated cell lysates and media with antisera to rIGF-II. A approximately 20-kDa protein was identified in immunoprecipitates of cell lysates having properties consistent with pro-rIGF-II. The approximately 20-kDa protein is precipitated by immune sera but not by nonimmune serum. Its immunoprecipitation is specifically inhibited by unlabeled rIGF-II but not by insulin. It is not precipitated from labeled lysates of a subclone of BRL-3A cells (BRL-3A2) that does not synthesize rIGF-II. The approximately 20-kDa protein is rapidly labeled intracellularly (10 min) but is not detected in BRL-3A media. In pulse-chase experiments, radioactivity in the approximately 20-kDa protein disappears during the chase and appears, at later times, in specifically immunoprecipitated approximately 19-, approximately 10-, approximately 8-, and approximately 7-kDa proteins in media and, to a limited extent, intracellularly. A protein with electrophoretic mobility identical to that of the approximately 20-kDa protein observed in cell lysates is immunoprecipitated from 35S-proteins whose synthesis is directed by BRL-3A RNA in a reticulocyte lysate cell-free translation system supplemented with microsomal membranes, and presumably arises by cotranslational removal of the signal peptide from approximately 22-kDa prepro-rIGF-II. Processing of the approximately 20-kDa protein in intact BRL-3A cells to intermediate and mature rIGF-II species appears to occur at the time of secretion and/or shortly thereafter, with the different forms appearing at approximately the same time.

- Abstract
In previous studies, we have identified possible biosynthetic precursors of rat insulin-like growth factor II (rIGF-II) using specific immunoprecipitation, approximately 22-kDa prepro-rIGF-II and 20-kDa pro-rIGF-II. We now provide chemical evidence that amino acid sequences corresponding to mature 7484-dalton rIGF-II are present at the NH2 terminus of the putative approximately 20-kDa pro-rIGF-II. BRL-3A cultures have been labeled individually with several radioactive amino acid precursors, the cells have been lysed, and the lysates have been immunoprecipitated with antiserum to rIGF-II. Following electrophoresis of the immunoprecipitated proteins, labeled approximately 20-kDa pro-rIGF-II was eluted from the gels and subjected to automated radiosequence analysis. Discrete peaks of radioactivity were observed in 12 of the first 30 cycles of Edman degradation. The deduced partial amino acid sequence was identical at each position with that of mature 7484-dalton rIGF-II. These results directly demonstrate that mature rIGF-II sequences are present in the approximately 20-kDa protein, as required if the approximately 20-kDa protein were pro-rIGF-II. In addition, they localize the 7484-dalton rIGF-II to the NH2 terminus of the precursor molecule. A second NH2-terminal sequence differing only in the absence of the NH2-terminal residue, alanine, also was present in an approximately equal amount. Similar NH2-terminal heterogeneity has been reported for 7484-dalton rIGF-II and most likely reflects ambiguity in the cleavage sites for the signal peptidase.

- Abstract
A (sulfonylbisphenoxy)-containing cyclotriphosphazene polymer system has been prepared by polycondensation of (phenoxy)chlorocyclotriphosphazene and 4,4'-sulfonylbisphenol. The syntheses by polycondensation using sodium salt of 4,4'-sulfonylbisphenol and by interfacial polycondensation were carried out for comparison. The characterization, thermal stability, and fire resistance of the synthesized polymers were studied. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that the polymers prepared were stable to above 400°C in nitrogen and exhibited high char contents at elevated temperature. The result indicated that the presence of a sulfonyl group was helpful for enhancing thermal stability and the presence of a phosphphazene ring was the cause of the high char residue at elevated temperature.

- Abstract
Interstitial retinoid-binding protein (IRBP) is synthesized and secreted by rod photoreceptor cells into the interphotoreceptor matrix and is known to bind retinoids and fatty acids. We have used cDNA clones encoding human IRBP to isolate a 15-kilobase genomic fragment that encompasses the complete human IRBP gene. The IRBP gene spans more than 11 kilobases and is interrupted by three introns, all of which are positioned near the 3′-end of the coding sequence. The 3741-base pair coding region of IRBP appears to have been generated by quadruplication of an approximately 900 base pair long ancestral gene. The deduced amino acid sequence predicts a mature protein of 1,230 residues (calculated molecular weight 133,000). The protein sequence can be aligned into four homologous segments, each consisting of about 300 residues. Sequence similarity between segments is as high as 60% when conservative substitutions are taken into account. Two putative N-linked glycosylation sites are located in highly conserved domains in the center of the first and second segment of IRBP. A domain consisting of 41 residues at the COOH-terminal end of the third segment has 15 matching residues (38%) with an intradiscal loop of rhodopsin, a retinal-binding protein in rod photoreceptors.

- Abstract
The divergence between monocots and dicots represents a major event in higher plant evolution, yet the date of its occurrence remains unknown because of the scarcity of relevant fossils. We have estimated this date by reconstructing phylogenetic trees from chloroplast DNA sequences, using two independent approaches: the rate of synonymous nucleotide substitution was calibrated from the divergence of maize, wheat, and rice, whereas the rate of nonsynonymous substitution was calibrated from the divergence of angiosperms and bryophytes. Both methods lead to an estimate of the monocot-dicot divergence at 200 million years (Myr) ago (with an uncertainty of about 40 Myr). This estimate is also supported by analyses of the nuclear genes encoding large and small subunit ribosomal RNAs. These results imply that the angiosperm lineage emerged in Jurassic-Triassic time, which considerably predates its appearance in the fossil record (approximately 120 Myr ago). We estimate the divergence between cycads and angiosperms to be approximately 340 Myr, which can be taken as an upper bound for the age of angiosperms.

PHOTODETECTORS - Abstract
Optical power dependence of capacitance in uni-traveling-carrier photodetectors is analyzed by founding a differential capacitance model. The trend of capacitance variation against optical power by simulation gets a good agreement with the measured results. The relationship between light-intensity-dependent capacitance and DC saturation characteristics of the device is also investigated at different collection layer thicknesses. The optical power at the maximum point of capacitance is near that at the DC saturation point. With the thickness of collection layer increasing, the maximum capacitance decreases and optical power at capacitance maximum point also becomes small. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The speciation of copper in the early stage of the electrokinetic remediation (EKR) process has been studied by extended X‐ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy in the present work. By in‐situEXAFS, we found that copper in a contaminated soil possessed a Cu‐O bond distance of 1.98 Å with a coordination number (CN) of 5.8. In the second shell, the bond distance of Cu‐(O)‐Cu was 2.87 Å with a CN of 6.4. However, possibly due to the fact that incompact copper atoms in the outer shells were distorted by EKR, the Cu‐(O)‐Cu (2nd shell) bond distance and the CN of copper in the contaminated soil decreased by 0.08 Å and 5.4, respectively in the early stage of the EKR process. Interestingly, after prolonging the contact time to about 80 minutes, the 1st‐shell copper atoms were also perturbed by EKR. This work is an example of usefulness of the in‐situEXAFS spectroscopy for detailed studies of the speciation of copper in the contaminated soil during EKR process.

We have fabricated organic thin film transistors (OTFTs) using rubrene as an active layer with untreated SiO2 and OTS modified SiO2 gate dielectrics. The effect of the OTS treatment on the electric characteristics of OTFT was investigated. As a result of OTS modification, we can improve the mobility to 0.12×10-2 cm2/V.S and IOn/IOff ratio to 0.98×105. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This document summarizes a study on the use of guselkumab as a treatment for moderate-to-severe psoriasis. The study analyzed data from two Phase 3 trials and found that guselkumab was effective and safe in treating psoriasis. The presence of anti-drug antibodies to guselkumab did not significantly impact the clinical response, and most patients had low antibody levels. The study also found that guselkumab concentrations were similar between patients with and without antibodies. The document cautions against comparing antibody development across different studies or treatments. [Extracted from the article]

The article offers information on a study conducted to find out whether IgE sensitization explains the difference between allergic diseases and depression. The study measures the presence of depression, total serum, allergen-specific IgE levels and presence of eczema and asthma among the population. The study reveals that IgE-mediated mechanisms could not explain the relationship between allergic diseases and depression.

PHYSIOLOGICAL effects of ammonia , *HYDROGEN analysis , *HYDROLYSIS , *DEHYDROGENATION , *HYDROGEN storage - Abstract
Ammonia borane (NH3BH3, AB) has a hydrogen capacity of 19.6 wt-%, exceeding that of gasoline and making itself an attractive candidate for hydrogen storage applications. Great efforts have been paid to research the low cost and highly efficient catalysts for hydrogen generation from the hydrolysis or methanolysis of AB in the past decade. Copper is admitted as being a promising catalyst, being as reactive as noble metals and much more cost effective. In this review, we focus on the research progresses of the Cu based nanocatalysts in dehydrogenation from AB for chemical hydrogen storage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

EPOXY resins ,CLAY ,NANOSTRUCTURED materials ,COMPOSITE materials ,ORGANIC compounds ,X-ray diffraction - Abstract
A series of novel epoxy/clay nanocomposites (EPOCg-x) were prepared with a selected epoxy resin and x wt% of a mechanically ground phosphorus-containing organoclay (POCg). The results of x-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared, and field emission scanning electron microscopy measurements showed that POCg was size-reduced, and its silicate layers were disordered by the grinding process. The results of XRD and transmission electron microscopy of the nanocomposites suggested that the POCg particles were well-dispersed in the epoxy matrix with a combination of intercalation and destruction platelet structures. The as-prepared nanocomposites remained thermally stable above 376 °C. Furthermore, the storage modulus in the glass state, surface hardness, char residue, and limiting oxygen index (LOI) of the as-prepared nanocomposite were all significantly increased with increasing the POCg content. The large increment of LOI, 10 units higher than that of neat epoxy, indicated that an extraordinary enhancement on flame retardancy was obtained from EPOCg-5. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
