The determination of the solid-liquid phase diagram of a binary system is always used as an experiment in the undergraduate physical chemistry laboratory courses. However, most phase diagrams investigated in the lab are simple eutectic ones, despite the fact that complex binary solid-liquid phase diagrams are more common. In this article, the cooling curves of phenol-t-butanol mixtures are measured and the phase diagram of this system is found to give three eutectic points and two congruent melting points. The laboratory provides the students a practical way to investigate a complex system with their own efforts and teamwork spirit.

Sophisticated sensing and actuation capabilities of many living organisms in nature have inspired scientists to develop biomimetic somatosensory soft robots. Herein, the design and fabrication of homogeneous and highly conductive hydrogels for bioinspired somatosensory soft actuators are reported. The conductive hydrogels are synthesized by in situ copolymerization of conductive surface‐functionalized MXene/Poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene)/poly(styrenesulfonate) ink with thermoresponsive poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) hydrogels. The resulting hydrogels are found to exhibit high conductivity (11.76 S m−1), strain sensitivity (GF of 9.93), broad working strain range (≈560% strain), and high stability after over 300 loading–unloading cycles at 100% strain. Importantly, shape‐programmable somatosensory hydrogel actuators with rapid response, light‐driven remote control, and self‐sensing capability are developed by chemically integrating the conductive hydrogels with a structurally colored polymer. As the proof‐of‐concept illustration, structurally colored hydrogel actuators are applied for devising light‐driven programmable shape‐morphing of an artificial octopus, an artificial fish, and a soft gripper that can simultaneously monitor their own motions via real‐time resistance variation. This work is expected to offer new insights into the design of advanced somatosensory materials with self‐sensing and actuation capabilities, and pave an avenue for the development of soft‐matter‐based self‐regulatory intelligence via built‐in feedback control that is of paramount significance for intelligent soft robotics and automated machines. Background: The use of the apparent transverse relaxation rate (R2*) in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) has not been previously reported in the literature. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of the R2* value in evaluating response to concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) in patients with NPC. Methods: Forty-one patients with locoregionally advanced NPC confirmed by pathology were examined by blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) before and after CCRT, and conventional MRI was performed 3 months after the completion of CCRT. All patients were divided into a responding group (RG) and a nonresponding group (NRG), according to MRI findings 3 months after the end of treatment. The R2* values before (R2*preT) and after (R2*postT) CCRT and the ΔR2* (ΔR2*=R2*postT – R2*preT) were calculated in the tumor. Results: Among the 41 patients, 26 were in the RG and 15 were in the NRG. There was no statistical difference in the R2*preT between RG and NRG (P = 0.307); however, there were significant differences in R2*postT and ΔR2* (P < 0.001). The area under the curve of R2*postT and ΔR2* for predicting the therapeutic response of NPC was 0.897 and 0.954, respectively, with cutoff values of 40.95 and 5.50 Hz, respectively. Conclusion: The R2* value can be used as a potential imaging indicator to evaluate the therapeutic response of locoregionally advanced NPC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The demand of building energy management has increased due to high energy saving potentials. Load monitor and disaggregation can provide useful information for building energy management systems with detailed and individual loads of the building, so corresponding energy efficient measures can be taken to reduce the energy consumption of buildings. The technique is investigated widely in residential buildings known as Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring (NILM). However, relevant studies are not sufficient for non-residential buildings, especially for the cooling loads. This paper proposes a NILM method for cooling load disaggregation using artificial neural network. The cooling load is disaggregated into four categories: building envelope load, occupant load, equipment load and fresh air load. Two approaches are used to realize the load disaggregation: one is based on the Fourier transfer of the cooling loads, the other takes the cooling load, dry-bulb temperature and humidity of outdoor air, and time as inputs. By implementing the methods in a metro station, the performance of the proposed method can be obtained. Results show that both approaches can realize the load disaggregation accurately, with a RMSE less than 11.2. The second approach is recommended with a higher accuracy.

Phase change material (PCM) can be used in building envelope for heat insulation and energy-saving. However, the energy-saving effect of the PCM wall system is limited in summer since the PCM storing heat in the daytime will become a secondary heat source and release heat into the room again at night. This paper proposed a novel pipe-encapsulated PCM wall system. It integrates phase change technology and nocturnal radiation cooling technology together to realize building insulation and active heat removal. A simulation platform is established for the thermal performance simulation of this wall system. It mainly includes the simplified pipe-encapsulated PCM wall model and nocturnal radiation model. The simplified wall model includes the 5R2C wall model, 4R2C PCM model and 2R1C pipe model. The model parameters are identified and the model is also validated with good accuracy. Based on this platform, the thermal performance of a light weight room with pipe-encapsulated PCM wall system in Wuhan is simulated. About 50%-60% of heat from the outdoor environment can be conserved by the pipe-encapsulated PCM wall, and 50% of that can be removed by the radiant cooler at night. Results show the pipe-encapsulated PCM wall system has good thermal performance for light weight building.
