Search

The AC Josephson effect manifests itself in the form of "Shapiro steps" of quantized voltage in Josephson junctions subject to RF radiation. This effect presents an early example of a driven-dissipative quantum phenomenon and is presently utilized in primary voltage standards. Shapiro steps have also become one of the standard tools to probe junctions made in a variety of novel materials. Here, we study Shapiro steps in a widely tunable graphene-based Josephson junction. We investigate the variety of patterns that can be obtained in this well-understood system depending on the carrier density, temperature, RF frequency, and magnetic field. Although the patterns of Shapiro steps can change drastically when just one parameter is varied, the overall trends can be understood and the behaviors straightforwardly simulated. We report experimental evidence for charged boson states in a solid without Cooper pairing, based on attaching two free carriers to an exciton in a semiconducting system. Theoretical calculations show that this type of complex is stable in bilayer systems next to a parallel metal layer. Our experimental measurements on structures made using two different materials show a new spectral line at the predicted energy, if and only if all the required conditions for this complex are fulfilled, including a parallel metal layer that significantly screens the repulsive interaction between the like-charge carriers, and with the predicted dependence on the distance to the metal layer. This suggests a new path for pursuing room temperature superconductivity without Cooper pairing.

Hexagonal boron nitride is widely used as a substrate for two-dimensional materials in both electronic and photonic devices. Here, we demonstrate that two-dimensional hexagonal boron nitride is also an ideal substrate for one-dimensional single-walled carbon nanotubes. Nanotubes directly attached to hexagonal boron nitride show bright photoluminescence with narrow linewidth at room temperature, comparable to air-suspended nanotubes. Using photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy, we unambiguously assign the chiralities of nanotubes on boron nitride by tracking individual tubes before and after contact with boron nitride. Although hexagonal boron nitride has a low dielectric constant and is attached to only one side of the nanotubes, we observe that optical transition energies are redshifted as much as ~50 meV from the air-suspended nanotubes. We also perform statistical measurements on more than 400 tubes, and the redshifts are found to be dependent on tube diameter. In monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides, quantum emitters are associated with localized strain that can be deterministically applied to create designer nano-arrays of single photon sources. Despite an overwhelming empirical correlation with local strain, the nanoscale interplay between strain, excitons, defects and local crystalline structure that gives rise to these quantum emitters is poorly understood. Here, we combine room-temperature nano-optical imaging and spectroscopy of excitons in nanobubbles of localized strain in monolayer WSe2 with atomistic structural models to elucidate how strain induces nanoscale confinement potentials that give rise to highly localized exciton states in 2D semiconductors. Nano-optical imaging of nanobubbles in low-defect monolayers reveal localized excitons on length scales of approximately 10 nm at multiple sites along the periphery of individual nanobubbles, which is in stark contrast to predictions of continuum models of strain. These results agree with theoretical confinement potentials that are atomistically derived from measured topographies of existing nanobubbles. Our results provide one-of-a-kind experimental and theoretical insight of how strain-induced confinement - without crystalline defects - can efficiently localize excitons on length scales commensurate with exciton size, providing key nanoscale structure-property information for quantum emitter phenomena in monolayer WSe2., Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures

Coherent charge transport along ballistic paths can be introduced into graphene by Andreev reflection, for which an electron reflects from a superconducting contact as a hole, while a Cooper pair is transmitted. We use a liquid-helium cooled scanning gate microscope (SGM) to image Andreev reflection in graphene in the magnetic focusing regime, where carriers move along cyclotron orbits between contacts. Images of flow are obtained by deflecting carrier paths and displaying the resulting change in conductance. When electrons enter the the superconductor, Andreev-reflected holes leave for the collecting contact. To test the results, we destroy Andreev reflection with a large current and by heating above the critical temperature. Identifying quantum numbers to label elementary excitations is essential for the correct description of light-matter interaction in solids. In monolayer semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) such as MoSe$_2$ or WSe$_2$, most optoelectronic phenomena are described well by labelling electron and hole states with the spin projection along the normal to the layer (S$_z$). In contrast, for WSe$_2$/MoSe$_2$ interfaces recent experiments show that taking S$_z$ as quantum number is not a good approximation, and spin mixing needs to be always considered. Here we argue that the correct quantum number for these systems is not S$_z$, but the $z$-component of the total angular momentum -- J$_z$ = L$_z$ + S$_z$ -- associated to the C$_3$ rotational lattice symmetry, which assumes half-integer values corresponding modulo 3 to distinct states. We validate this conclusion experimentally through the observation of strong intervalley scattering mediated by chiral optical phonons that -- despite carrying angular momentum 1 -- cause resonant intervalley transitions of excitons, with an angular momentum difference of 2., Comment: are welcome

The aim of the present study is to analyze the stability of the pressure gradient driven modes (PM) and Alfven eigenmodes (AE) in the Large Helical Device (LHD) plasma if the rotational transform profile is modified by the current drive of the tangential neutral beam injectors (NBI). This study forms a basic search for optimized operation scenarios with reduced mode activity. The analysis is performed using the code FAR3d which solves the reduced MHD equations describing the linear evolution of the poloidal flux and the toroidal component of the vorticity in a full 3D system, coupled with equations for density and parallel velocity moments of the energetic particle (EP) species, including the effect of the acoustic modes. The Landau damping and resonant destabilization effects are added via the closure relation. On-axis and off-axis NBI current drive modifies the rotational transform which becomes strongly distorted as the intensity of the neutral beam current drive (NBCD) increases, leading to wider continuum gaps and modifying the magnetic shear. The simulations with on-axis NBI injection show that a counter (ctr-) NBCD in inward shifted and default configurations leads to a lower growth rate of the PM, although strong n=1 and 2 AEs can be destabilized. For the outward shifted configurations, a co-NBCD improves the AEs stability but the PM are further destabilized if the co-NBCD intensity is 30 kA/T. If the NBI injection is off-axis, the plasma stability is not significantly improved due to the further destabilization of the AE and energetic particle modes (EPM) in the middle and outer plasma region.

We report the fabrication and characterization of gate-defined hole quantum dots in monolayer and bilayer WSe$_2$. The devices were operated with gates above and below the WSe$_2$ layer to accumulate a hole gas, which for some devices was then selectively depleted to define the dot. Temperature dependence of conductance in the Coulomb blockade regime is consistent with transport through a single level, and excited state transport through the dots was observed at temperatures up to 10 K. For adjacent charge states of a bilayer WSe$_2$ dot, magnetic field dependence of excited state energies was used to estimate $g$-factors between 0.8 and 2.4 for different states. These devices provide a platform to evaluate valley-spin states in monolayer and bilayer WSe$_2$ for application as qubits.

The optical properties of monolayer and bilayer transition metal dichalcogenide semiconductors are governed by excitons in different spin and valley configurations, providing versatile aspects for van der Waals heterostructures and devices. We present experimental and theoretical studies of exciton energy splittings in external magnetic field in neutral and charged WSe$_2$ monolayer and bilayer crystals embedded in a field effect device for active doping control. We develop theoretical methods to calculate the exciton $g$-factors from first principles and tight-binding for all possible spin-valley configurations of excitons in monolayer and bilayer WSe$_2$ including valley-indirect exciton configurations. Our theoretical and experimental findings shed light on some of the characteristic photoluminescence peaks observed for monolayer and bilayer WSe$_2$. In more general terms, the theoretical aspects of our work provide new guidelines for the characterization of single and few-layer transition metal dichalcogenides, as well as their heterostructures, in the presence of external magnetic fields.

A variety of correlated phases have recently emerged in select twisted van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures owing to their flat electronic dispersions. In particular, heterostructures of twisted double bilayer graphene (tDBG) manifest electric field-tunable correlated insulating (CI) states at all quarter fillings of the conduction band, accompanied by nearby states featuring signatures suggestive of superconductivity. Here, we report electrical transport measurements of tDBG in which we elucidate the fundamental role of spontaneous symmetry breaking within its correlated phase diagram. We observe abrupt resistivity drops upon lowering the temperature in the correlated metallic phases neighboring the CI states, along with associated nonlinear $I$-$V$ characteristics. Despite qualitative similarities to superconductivity, concomitant reversals in the sign of the Hall coefficient instead point to spontaneous symmetry breaking as the origin of the abrupt resistivity drops, while Joule heating appears to underlie the nonlinear transport. Ohm's law describes the proportionality of current density and electric field. In solid-state conductors, Ohm's law emerges due to electron scattering processes that relax the electrical current. Here, we use nitrogen-vacancy center magnetometry to directly image the local breakdown of Ohm's law in a narrow constriction fabricated in a high mobility graphene monolayer. Ohmic flow is visible at room temperature as current concentration on the constriction edges, with flow profiles entirely determined by sample geometry. However, as the temperature is lowered below 200 K, the current concentrates near the constriction center. The change in the flow pattern is consistent with a crossover from diffusive to viscous electron transport dominated by electron-electron scattering processes that do not relax current., Comment: Fixed colorscale label Fig. 3b

Excitons with binding energies of a few hundreds of meV control the optical properties of transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers. Knowledge of the fine structure of these excitons is therefore essential to understand the optoelectronic properties of these 2D materials. Here we measure the exciton fine structure of MoS2 and MoSe2 monolayers encapsulated in boron nitride by magneto-photoluminescence spectroscopy in magnetic fields up to 30 T. The experiments performed in transverse magnetic field reveal a brightening of the spin-forbidden dark excitons in MoS2 monolayer: we find that the dark excitons appear at 14 meV below the bright ones. Measurements performed in tilted magnetic field provide a conceivable description of the neutral exciton fine structure. The experimental results are in agreement with a model taking into account the effect of the exchange interaction on both the bright and dark exciton states as well as the interaction with the magnetic field.

When two-dimensional atomic crystals are brought into close proximity to form a van der Waals heterostructure, neighbouring crystals can start influencing each others electronic properties. Of particular interest is the situation when the periodicity of the two crystals closely match and a moir\'e pattern forms, which results in specific electron scattering, reconstruction of electronic and excitonic spectra, crystal reconstruction, and many other effects. Thus, formation of moir\'e patterns is a viable tool of controlling the electronic properties of 2D materials. At the same time, the difference in the interatomic distances for the two crystals combined, determines the range in which the electronic spectrum is reconstructed, and thus is a barrier to the low energy regime. Here we present a way which allows spectrum reconstruction at all energies. By using graphene which is aligned simultaneously to two hexagonal boron nitride layers, one can make electrons scatter in the differential moir\'e pattern, which can have arbitrarily small wavevector and, thus results in spectrum reconstruction at arbitrarily low energies. We demonstrate that the strength of such a potential relies crucially on the atomic reconstruction of graphene within the differential moir\'e super-cell. Moir\'e superlattices in van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures have given rise to a number of emergent electronic phenomena due to the interplay between atomic structure and electron correlations. A lack of a simple way to characterize moir\'e superlattices has impeded progress in the field. In this work we outline a simple, room-temperature, ambient method to visualize real-space moir\'e superlattices with sub-5 nm spatial resolution in a variety of twisted vdW heterostructures including but not limited to conducting graphene, insulating boron nitride and semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides. Our method utilizes piezoresponse force microscopy, an atomic force microscope modality which locally measures electromechanical surface deformation. We find that all moir\'e superlattices, regardless of whether the constituent layers have inversion symmetry, exhibit a mechanical response to out-of-plane electric fields. This response is closely tied to flexoelectricity wherein electric polarization and electromechanical response is induced through strain gradients present within moir\'e superlattices. We report on measurements of quantized conductance in gate-defined quantum point contacts in bilayer graphene that allow the observation of subband splittings due to spin-orbit coupling. The size of this splitting can be tuned from 40 to 80 $\mu$eV by the displacement field. We assign this gate-tunable subband-splitting to a gap induced by spin-orbit coupling of Kane-Mele type, enhanced by proximity effects due to the substrate. We show that this spin-orbit coupling gives rise to a complex pattern in low perpendicular magnetic fields, increasing the Zeeman splitting in one valley and suppressing it in the other one. In addition, we observe the existence of a spin-polarized channel of 6 e$^2$/h at high in-plane magnetic field and of signatures of interaction effects at the crossings of spin-split subbands of opposite spins at finite magnetic field., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, Supplement 6 figures

Electron-electron interactions play a critical role in many condensed matter phenomena, and it is tempting to find a way to control them by changing the interactions' strength. One possible approach is to place a studied system in proximity of a metal, which induces additional screening and hence suppresses electron interactions. Here, using devices with atomically-thin gate dielectrics and atomically-flat metallic gates, we measure the electron-electron scattering length in graphene and report qualitative deviations from the standard behavior. The changes induced by screening become important only at gate dielectric thicknesses of a few nm, much smaller than a typical separation between electrons. Our theoretical analysis agrees well with the scattering rates extracted from measurements of electron viscosity in monolayer graphene and of umklapp electron-electron scattering in graphene superlattices. The results provide a guidance for future attempts to achieve proximity screening of many-body phenomena in two-dimensional systems., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures

Vertical stacking of atomically thin layered materials opens new possibilities for the fabrication of heterostructures with favorable optoelectronic properties. The combination of graphene, hexagonal boron nitride and semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides allows fabrication of electroluminescence (EL) devices, compatible with a wide range of substrates. Here, we demonstrate a full integration of an electroluminescent van der Waals heterostructure in a monolithic optical microcavity made of two high reflectivity dielectric distributed Bragg reflectors (DBRs). Owing to the presence of graphene and hexagonal boron nitride protecting the WSe$_2$ during the top mirror deposition, we fully preserve the optoelectronic behaviour of the device. Two bright cavity modes appear in the EL spectrum featuring Q-factors of 250 and 580 respectively: the first is attributed directly to the monolayer area, while the second is ascribed to the portion of emission guided outside the WSe$_2$ island. By embedding the EL device inside the microcavity structure, a significant modification of the directionality of the emitted light is achieved, with the peak intensity increasing by nearly two orders of magnitude at the angle of the maximum emission compared with the same EL device without the top DBR. Furthermore, the coupling of the WSe$_2$ EL to the cavity mode with a dispersion allows a tuning of the peak emission wavelength exceeding 35 nm (80 meV) by varying the angle at which the EL is observed from the microcavity. This work provides a route for the development of compact vertical-cavity surface-emitting devices based on van der Waals heterostructures.

Transport properties of graphene - superconductor junction has been studied extensively to understand the interplay of the relativistic Dirac quasiparticles and superconductivity. Though shot noise measurements in graphene has been performed to realize many theoretical predictions, both at zero magnetic field as well as quantum Hall (QH) regime, its junction with superconductor remain unexplored. Here, we have carried out the shot noise measurements in an edge contacted bilayer graphene - Niobium superconductor junction at zero magnetic field as well as QH regime. At the Dirac point we have observed a Fano factor ~ 1/3 above the superconducting gap and a transition to an enhanced Fano factor ~ 0.5 below the superconducting gap. By changing the carrier density we have found a continuous reduction of Fano factor for both types of carriers, however the enhancement of Fano factor within the superconducting gap by a factor of ~ 1.5 is always preserved. The enhancement of shot noise is also observed in the QH regime, where the current is carried by the edge state, below the critical magnetic field and within the superconducting gap. These observations clearly demonstrate the enhanced charge transport at the graphene-superconductor interface., Comment: accepted in Physical Review B

Magnetic fields force ballistic electrons injected from a narrow contact to move along skipping orbits and form caustics. This leads to pronounced resistance peaks at nearby voltage probes as electrons are effectively focused inside them, a phenomenon known as magnetic focusing. This can be used not only for the demonstration of ballistic transport but also to study the electronic structure of metals. Here we use magnetic focusing to probe narrow bands in graphene bilayers twisted at 2 degrees. Their minibands are found to support long-range ballistic transport limited at low temperatures by intrinsic electron-electron scattering. A voltage bias between the layers causes strong valley splitting and allows selective focusing for different valleys, which is of interest for using this degree of freedom in frequently-discussed valleytronics.

The greater information depth provided in Hard X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (HAXPES) enables non-destructive analyses of the chemistry and electronic structure of buried interfaces. Moreover, for industrially relevant elements like Al, Si and Ti, the combined access to the Al 1s, Si 1s or Ti 1s photoelectron line and its associated Al KLL, Si KLL or Ti KLL Auger transition, as required for local chemical state analysis on the basis of the Auger parameter, is only possible with hard X-rays. Until now, such photoemission studies were only possible at synchrotron facilities. Recently however, the first commercial XPS/HAXPES systems, equipped with both soft and hard X-ray sources, have entered the market, providing unique opportunities for monitoring the local chemical state of all constituent ions in functional oxides at different probing depths, in a routine laboratory environment. Bulk-sensitive shallow core-levels can be excited using either the hard or soft X-ray source, whereas more surface-sensitive deep core-level photoelectron lines and associated Auger transitions can be measured using the hard X-ray source. As demonstrated for thin Al2O3, SiO2 and TiO2 films, the local chemical state of the constituting ions in the oxide may even be probed at near constant probing depth by careful selection of sets of photoelectron and Auger lines, as excited with the combined soft and hard X-ray sources. We highlight the potential of lab-based HAXPES for the research on functional oxides and also discuss relevant technical details regarding the calibration of the kinetic binding energy scale.

Atomically thin van der Waals materials stacked with an interlayer twist have proven to be an excellent platform towards achieving gate-tunable correlated phenomena linked to the formation of flat electronic bands. In this work we demonstrate the formation of emergent correlated phases in multilayer rhombohedral graphene - a simple material that also exhibits a flat electronic band but without the need of having a moir\'e superlattice induced by twisted van der Waals layers. We show that two layers of bilayer graphene that are twisted by an arbitrary tiny angle host large (micron-scale) regions of uniform rhombohedral four-layer (ABCA) graphene that can be independently studied. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy reveals that ABCA graphene hosts an unprecedentedly sharp flat band of 3-5 meV half-width. We demonstrate that when this flat band straddles the Fermi level, a correlated many-body gap emerges with peak-to-peak value of 9.5 meV at charge neutrality. Mean field theoretical calculations indicate that the two primary candidates for the appearance of this broken symmetry state are a charge transfer excitonic insulator and a ferrimagnet. Finally, we show that ABCA graphene hosts surface topological helical edge states at natural interfaces with ABAB graphene which can be turned on and off with gate voltage, implying that small angle twisted double bilayer graphene is an ideal programmable topological quantum material., Comment: Main: 9 Pages, 4 Figures; Supplementary Materials: 8 Pages, 10 Figures

Josephson junctions with weak-links of exotic materials allow the elucidation of the Josephson effect in previously unexplored regimes. Further, such devices offer a direct probe of novel material properties, for example in the search for Majorana fermions. In this work, we report on DC and AC Josephson effect of high-mobility, hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) encapsulated graphene Josephson junctions. On the application of RF radiation, we measure phase-locked Shapiro steps. An unexpected bistability between $\pm 1$ steps is observed with switching times on the order of seconds. A critical scaling of a bistable state is measured directly from the switching time, allowing for direct comparison to numerical simulations. We show such intermittent chaotic behavior is a consequence of the nonlinear dynamics of the junction and has a sensitive dependence on the current-phase relation. This work draws connections between nonlinear phenomena in dynamical systems and their implications for ongoing condensed matter experiments exploring topology and exotic physics.

High carrier mobilities play a fundamental role for high-frequency electronics, integrated optoelectronics as well as for sensor and spintronic applications, where device performance is directly linked to the magnitude of the carrier mobility. Van der Waals heterostructures formed by graphene and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) already outperform all known materials in terms of room temperature mobility. Here, we show that the mobility of today's best graphene/hBN devices can be surpassed by more than a factor of three by heterostructures formed by tungsten diselenide (WSe$_2$), graphene and hBN, which can have mobilities as high as 350,000 cm$^2$/(Vs) at room temperature, and resistivities as low as 15 Ohm. The resistivity of these devices shows a much weaker temperature dependence than the one of graphene on any other known substrate. The origin of this behaviour points to modified acoustic phonon bands in graphene and questions our understanding of electron-phonon scattering in van der Waals heterostructures., Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures

We develop a fully self-consistent model to describe scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) measurements of Bernal-stacked bilayer graphene (BLG), and we compare the results of our model to experimental measurements. Our results show that the STS tip acts as a top gate that changes the BLG bandstructure and Fermi level, while simultaneously probing the voltage-dependent tunneling density of states (TDOS). These effects lead to differences between the TDOS and the local density of states (LDOS); in particular, we show that the bandgap of the BLG appears larger than expected in STS measurements, that an additional feature appears in the TDOS that is an artifact of the STS measurement, and that asymmetric charge distribution effects between the individual graphene layers are observable via STS., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures. We report on quantum transport measurements on etched graphene nanoribbons encapsulated in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). At zero magnetic field our devices behave qualitatively very similar to what has been reported for graphene nanoribbons on $\text{SiO}_2$ or hBN, but exhibit a considerable smaller transport gap. At magnetic fields of around $3~$T the transport behavior changes considerably and is dominated by a much larger energy gap induced by electron-electron interactions completely suppressing transport. This energy gap increases with a slope on the order of $3-4~ $meV/T reaching values of up to $ 30~\mathrm{meV} $ at $ 9~ $T., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

Due to high binding energy and oscillator strength, excitons in thin flakes of transition metal dichalcogenides constitute a perfect foundation for realizing a strongly coupled light-matter system. In this paper we investigate mono- and few-layer WSe$_2$ flakes encapsulated in hexagonal boron nitride and incorporated into a planar dielectric cavity. We use an open cavity design which provides tunability of the cavity mode energy by as much as 150 meV. We observe a strong coupling regime between the cavity photons and the neutral excitons in direct-bandgap monolayer WSe$_2$, as well as in few-layer WSe$_2$ flakes exhibiting indirect bandgap. We discuss the dependence of the exciton's oscillator strength and resonance linewidth on the number of layers and predict the exciton-photon coupling strength.

We report the observation of a quantum anomalous Hall effect in twisted bilayer graphene showing Hall resistance quantized to within .1\% of the von Klitzing constant $h/e^2$ at zero magnetic field.The effect is driven by intrinsic strong correlations, which polarize the electron system into a single spin and valley resolved moir\'e miniband with Chern number $C=1$. In contrast to extrinsic, magnetically doped systems, the measured transport energy gap $\Delta/k_B\approx 27$~K is larger than the Curie temperature for magnetic ordering $T_C\approx 9$~K, and Hall quantization persists to temperatures of several Kelvin. Remarkably, we find that electrical currents as small as 1~nA can be used to controllably switch the magnetic order between states of opposite polarization, forming an electrically rewritable magnetic memory., Comment: Additional information available at www.afylab.com

We investigate supercurrent interference patterns measured as a function of magnetic field in ballistic graphene Josephson junctions. At high doping, the expected $\Phi_{0}$-periodic "Fraunhofer" pattern is observed, indicating a uniform current distribution. Close to the Dirac point, we find anomalous interference patterns with an apparent 2$\Phi_{0}$ periodicity, similar to that predicted for topological Andreev bound states carrying a charge of $e$ instead of $2e$. This feature persists with increasing temperature, ruling out a non-sinusoidal current-phase relationship. It also persists in junctions in which sharp vacuum edges are eliminated. Our results indicate that the observed behavior may originate from an intrinsic property of ballistic graphene Josephson junctions, though the exact mechanism remains unclear., Comment: Main text+ supplementary

The results of magneto-optical spectroscopy investigations of excitons in a CVD grown monolayer of WSe2 encapsulated in hexagonal boron nitride are presented. The emission linewidth for the 1s state is of 4:7 meV, close to the narrowest emissions observed in monolayers exfoliated from bulk material. The 2s excitonic state is also observed at higher energies in the photoluminescence spectrum. Magneto-optical spectroscopy allows for the determination of the g-factors and of the spatial extent of the excitonic wave functions associated with these emissions. Van der Waals heterostructures give access to a wide variety of new phenomena that emerge thanks to the combination of properties brought in by the constituent layered materials. We show here that owing to an enhanced interaction cross section with electrons in a type I van der Waals heterostructure, made of single layer molybdenum disulphide and thin boron nitride films, electrons and holes created in boron nitride can be transferred to the dichalcogenide where they form electron-hole pairs yielding luminescence. This cathodoluminescence can be mapped with a spatial resolution far exceeding what can be achieved in a typical photoluminescence experiment, and is highly valuable to understand the optoelectronic properties at the nanometer scale. We find that in heterostructures prepared following the mainstream dry transfer technique, cathodoluminescence is locally extinguished, and we show that this extinction is associated with the formation of defects, that are detected in Raman spectroscopy and photoluminescence. We establish that to avoid defect formation induced by low-energy electron beams and to ensure efficient transfer of electrons and holes at the interface between the layers, flat and uniform interlayer interfaces are needed, that are free of trapped species, airborne ones or contaminants associated with sample preparation. We show that heterostructure fabrication using a pick-up technique leads to superior, intimate interlayer contacts associated with significantly more homogeneous cathodoluminescence.

The intriguing physics of carrier-carrier interactions, which likewise affect the operation of light emitting devices, stimulate the research on semiconductor structures at high densities of excited carriers, a limit reachable at large pumping rates or in systems with long-lived electron-hole pairs. By electrically injecting carriers into WSe$_2$/MoS$_2$ type-II heterostructures which are indirect in real and k-space, we establish a large population of typical optically silent interlayer excitons. Here, we reveal their emission spectra and show that the emission energy is tunable by an applied electric field. When the population is further increased by suppressing the radiative recombination rate with the introduction of an hBN spacer between WSe$_2$ and MoS$_2$, Auger-type and exciton-exciton annihilation processes become important. These processes are traced by the observation of an up-converted emission demonstrating that excitons gaining energy in non-radiative Auger processes can be recovered and recombine radiatively., Comment: accepted for publication in Nature Communications

Intrinsic and extrinsic disorder from lattice imperfections, substrate and environment has a strong effect on the local electronic structure and hence the optical properties of atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides that are determined by strong Coulomb interaction. Here, we examine the role of the substrate material and intrinsic defects in monolayer MoS2 crystals on SiO2 and hBN substrates using a combination of scanning tunneling spectroscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy, optical absorbance, and low-temperature photoluminescence measurements. We find that the different substrates significantly impact the optical properties and the local density of states near the conduction band edge observed in tunneling spectra. While the SiO2 substrates induce a large background doping with electrons and a substantial amount of band tail states near the conduction band edge of MoS2, such states as well as the high doping density are absent using high quality hBN substrates. By accounting for the substrate effects we obtain a quasiparticle gap that is in excellent agreement with optical absorbance spectra and we deduce an exciton binding energy of about 480 meV. We identify several intrinsic lattice defects that are ubiquitious in MoS2, but we find that on hBN substrates the impact of these defects appears to be passivated. We conclude that the choice of substrate controls both the effects of intrinsic defects and extrinsic disorder, and thus the electronic and optical properties of MoS2. The correlation of substrate induced disorder and defects on the electronic and optical properties of MoS2 contributes to an in-depth understanding of the role of the substrates on the performance of 2D materials and will help to further improve the properties of 2D materials based quantum nanosystems., Comment: 23 pages, 4 figures

We study a two-terminal graphene Josephson junction with contacts shaped to form a narrow constriction, less than 100nm in length. The contacts are made from type II superconducting contacts and able to withstand magnetic fields high enough to reach the quantum Hall (QH) regime in graphene. In this regime, the device conductance is determined by edge states, plus the contribution from the constricted region. In particular, the constriction area can support supercurrents up to fields of ~2.5T. Moreover, enhanced conductance is observed through a wide range of magnetic fields and gate voltages. This additional conductance and the appearance of supercurrent is attributed to the tunneling between counter-propagating quantum Hall edge states along opposite superconducting contacts., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

We report on ground- and excited state transport through an electrostatically defined few-hole quantum dot in bilayer graphene in both parallel and perpendicular applied magnetic fields. A remarkably clear level scheme for the two-particle spectra is found by analyzing finite bias spectroscopy data within a two-particle model including spin and valley degrees of freedom. We identify the two-hole ground-state to be a spin-triplet and valley-singlet state. This spin alignment can be seen as Hund's rule for a valley-degenerate system, which is fundamentally different to quantum dots in carbon nano tubes and GaAs-based quantum dots. The spin-singlet excited states are found to be valley-triplet states by tilting the magnetic field with respect to the sample plane. We quantify the exchange energy to be 0.35meV and measure a valley and spin g-factor of 36 and 2, respectively.

In semiconductor physics, many essential optoelectronic material parameters can be experimentally revealed via optical spectroscopy in sufficiently large magnetic fields. For monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenide semiconductors, this field scale is substantial --tens of teslas or more-- due to heavy carrier masses and huge exciton binding energies. Here we report absorption spectroscopy of monolayer MoS$_2$, MoSe$_2$, MoTe$_2$, and WS$_2$ in very high magnetic fields to 91~T. We follow the diamagnetic shifts and valley Zeeman splittings of not only the exciton's $1s$ ground state but also its excited $2s$, $3s$, ..., $ns$ Rydberg states. This provides a direct experimental measure of the effective (reduced) exciton masses and dielectric properties. Exciton binding energies, exciton radii, and free-particle bandgaps are also determined. The measured exciton masses are heavier than theoretically predicted, especially for Mo-based monolayers. These results provide essential and quantitative parameters for the rational design of opto-electronic van der Waals heterostructures incorporating 2D semiconductors., Comment: updated; now also including data on MoTe2. We report high room-temperature mobility in single layer graphene grown by Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) after wet transfer on SiO$_2$ and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) encapsulation. By removing contaminations trapped at the interfaces between single-crystal graphene and hBN, we achieve mobilities up to$\sim70000cm^2 V^{-1} s^{-1}$ at room temperature and$\sim120000cm^2 V^{-1} s^{-1}$ at 9K. These are over twice those of previous wet transferred graphene and comparable to samples prepared by dry transfer. We also investigate the combined approach of thermal annealing and encapsulation in polycrystalline graphene, achieving room temperature mobilities$\sim30000 cm^2 V^{-1} s^{-1}$. These results show that, with appropriate encapsulation and cleaning, room temperature mobilities well above $10000cm^2 V^{-1} s^{-1}$ can be obtained in samples grown by CVD and transferred using a conventional, easily scalable PMMA-based wet approach.

The aim of this study is to perform a theoretical analysis of the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) stability and energetic particle effects on a LHD equilibria, calculated during a discharge where energetic-ion-driven resistive interchange mode (EIC) events were triggered. We use the reduced MHD equations to describe the linear evolution of the poloidal flux and the toroidal component of the vorticity in a full 3D system, coupled with equations of density and parallel velocity moments for the energetic particles species. We add the Landau damping and resonant destabilization effects using a closure relation. The simulations suggest that the helically trapped EP driven by the perpendicular neutral beam injector (NBI) further destabilizes the 1/1 MHD-like mode located at the plasma periphery (r/a = 0.88). If the beta of the EP driven by the perpendicular NBI is larger than 0.0025 a 1/1 EIC with a frequency around 3 kHz is destabilized. If the effect of the passing EP driven by the tangential NBI is included on the model, any enhancement of the injection intensity of the tangential NBI below beta=0.025 leads to a decrease of the instability growth rate. The simulations indicate that the perpendicular NBI EP is the main driver of the EIC events, as it was observed in the experiment. If the effect of the helical couplings are added in the model, an 11/13 EIC is destabilized with a frequency around 9 kHz, inward shifted (r/a = 0.81) compared to the 1/1 EIC. Thus, one possible explanation for the EIC frequency chirping down from 9 to 3 kHz is a transition between the 11/13 to the 1/1 EIC due to a weakening of the destabilizing effect of the high n modes, caused by a decrease of the EP drive due to a loss of helically trapped EP or a change in the EP distribution function after the EIC burst., Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1807.04380

In heterostructures consisting of atomically thin crystals layered on top of one another, lattice mismatch or rotation between the layers results in long-wavelength moir\'e superlattices. These moir\'e patterns can drive significant band structure reconstruction of the composite material, leading to a wide range of emergent phenomena including superconductivity, magnetism, fractional Chern insulating states, and moir\'e excitons. Here, we investigate monolayer graphene encapsulated between two crystals of boron nitride (BN), where the rotational alignment between all three components can be varied. We find that band gaps in the graphene arising from perfect rotational alignment with both BN layers can be modified substantially depending on whether the relative orientation of the two BN layers is 0 or 60 degrees, suggesting a tunable transition between the absence or presence of inversion symmetry in the heterostructure. Small deviations ($<1^{\circ}$) from perfect alignment of all three layers leads to coexisting long-wavelength moir\'e potentials, resulting in a highly reconstructed graphene band structure featuring multiple secondary Dirac points. We report the first electronic compressibility measurements of magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene. The evolution of the compressibility with carrier density offers insights into the interaction-driven ground state that have not been accessible in prior transport and tunneling studies. From capacitance measurements, we determine chemical potential as a function of carrier density and find the widths of the energy gaps at fractional filling of the moir\'{e} lattice. In the electron-doped regime, we observe unexpectedly large gaps at quarter- and half-filling and strong electron-hole asymmetry. Moreover, we measure a $\mathord{\sim}35\,\textrm{meV}$ mini-bandwidth that is much wider than most theoretical estimates. Finally, we explore the field dependence up to the quantum Hall regime and observe significant differences from transport measurements., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures

We report on charge detection in electrostatically-defined quantum dot devices in bilayer graphene using an integrated charge detector. The device is fabricated without any etching and features a graphite back gate, leading to high quality quantum dots. The charge detector is based on a second quantum dot separated from the first dot by depletion underneath a 150 nm wide gate. We show that Coulomb resonances in the sensing dot are sensitive to individual charging events on the nearby quantum dot. The potential change due to single electron charging causes a step-like change (up to 77 %) in the current through the charge detector. Furthermore, the charging states of a quantum dot with tunable tunneling barriers and of coupled quantum dots can be detected.

The universal quantization of thermal conductance provides information on the topological order of a state beyond electrical conductance. Such measurements have become possible only recently, and have discovered, in particular, that the value of the observed thermal conductance of the 5/2 state is not consistent with either the Pfaffian or the anti-Pfaffian model, motivating several theoretical articles. The analysis of the experiments has been made complicated by the presence of counter-propagating edge channels arising from edge reconstruction, an inevitable consequence of separating the dopant layer from the GaAs quantum well. In particular, it has been found that the universal quantization requires thermalization of downstream and upstream edge channels. Here we measure the thermal conductance in hexagonal boron nitride encapsulated graphene devices of sizes much smaller than the thermal relaxation length of the edge states. We find the quantization of thermal conductance within 5% accuracy for {\nu} = 1, 4/3, 2 and 6 plateaus and our results strongly suggest the absence of edge reconstruction for fractional quantum Hall in graphene, making it uniquely suitable for interference phenomena exploiting paths of exotic quasiparticles along the edge.

We demonstrate that, in monolayers (MLs) of semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides, the $s$-type Rydberg series of excitonic states follows a simple energy ladder: $\epsilon_n=-Ry^*/(n+\delta)^2$, $n$=1,2,\ldots, in which $Ry^*$ is very close to the Rydberg energy scaled by the dielectric constant of the medium surrounding the ML and by the reduced effective electron-hole mass, whereas the ML polarizability is only accounted for by $\delta$. This is justified by the analysis of experimental data on excitonic resonances, as extracted from magneto-optical measurements of a high-quality WSe$_2$ ML encapsulated in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), and well reproduced with an analytically solvable Schr\"odinger equation when approximating the electron-hole potential in the form of a modified Kratzer potential. Applying our convention to other, MoSe$_2$, WS$_2$, MoS$_2$ MLs encapsulated in hBN, we estimate an apparent magnitude of $\delta$ for each of the studied structures. Intriguingly, $\delta$ is found to be close to zero for WSe$_2$ as well as for MoS$_2$ monolayers, what implies that the energy ladder of excitonic states in these two-dimensional structures resembles that of Rydberg states of a three-dimensional hydrogen atom., Comment: Manuscript: 6 pages, 4 figures; SM: 11 pages, 12 figures

Twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) has recently emerged as a platform for hosting correlated phenomena, owing to the exceptionally flat band dispersion that results near interlayer twist angle $\theta\approx1.1^\circ$. At low temperature a variety of phases are observed that appear to be driven by electron interactions including insulating states, superconductivity, and magnetism. Electrical transport in the high temperature regime has received less attention but is also highly anomalous, exhibiting gigantic resistance enhancement and non-monotonic temperature dependence. Here we report on the evolution of the scattering mechanisms in tBLG over a wide range of temperature and for twist angle varying from 0.75$^\circ$ - 2$^\circ$. We find that the resistivity, $\rho$, exhibits three distinct phenomenological regimes as a function of temperature, $T$. At low $T$ the response is dominated by correlation and disorder physics; at high $T$ by thermal activation to higher moir\'e subbands; and at intermediate temperatures $\rho$ varies linearly with $T$. The $T$-linear response is much larger than in monolayer graphenefor all measured twist angles, and increases by more than three orders of magnitude for $\theta$ near the flat-band condition. Our results point to the dominant role of electron-phonon scattering in twisted layer systems, with possible implications for the origin of the observed superconductivity.

Optical properties of atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides are controlled by robust excitons characterized by a very large oscillator strength. Encapsulation of monolayers such as MoSe$_2$ in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) yields narrow optical transitions approaching the homogenous exciton linewidth. We demonstrate that the exciton radiative rate in these van der Waals heterostructures can be tailored by a simple change of the hBN encapsulation layer thickness as a consequence of the Purcell effect. The time-resolved photoluminescence measurements together with cw reflectivity and photoluminescence experiments show that the neutral exciton spontaneous emission time can be tuned by one order of magnitude depending on the thickness of the surrounding hBN layers. The inhibition of the radiative recombination can yield spontaneous emission time up to $10$~ps. These results are in very good agreement with the calculated recombination rate in the weak exciton-photon coupling regime. The analysis shows that we are also able to observe a sizeable enhancement of the exciton radiative decay rate. Understanding the role of these electrodynamical effects allow us to elucidate the complex dynamics of relaxation and recombination for both neutral and charged excitons.
