Abstract

The long-lived 60Fe (with a half-life of 2.62 Myr) is a crucial diagnostic of active nucleosynthesis in the Milky Way galaxy and in supernovae near the solar system. The neutron-capture reaction 59Fe(n, Îł)60Fe on 59Fe (half-life = 44.5 days) is the key reaction for the production of 60Fe in massive stars. This reaction cross section has been previously constrained by the Coulomb dissociation experiment, which offered partial constraint on the E 1 Îł -ray strength function but a negligible constraint on the M 1 and E 2 components. In this work, for the first time, we use the surrogate ratio method to experimentally determine the 59Fe(n, Îł)60Fe cross sections in which all the components are included. We derived a Maxwellian-averaged cross section of 27.5 ± 3.5 mb at kT = 30 keV and 13.4 ± 1.7 mb at kT = 90 keV, roughly 10%â€"20% higher than previous estimates. We analyzed the impact of our new reaction rates in nucleosynthesis models of massive stars and found that uncertainties in the production of 60Fe from the 59Fe(n, Îł)60Fe rate are at most 25%. Abstract

In order to investigate the effects of biochar on soil cadmium (Cd) content in northwestern China, we used cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) straw charcoal in a 2-year experiment involving different doses of both biochars (1.5% (C1) and 3% (C2)) and Cd (1 mg·kg-1 (H1), 2 mg·kg-1 (H2), and 4 mg·kg-1 (H3)) in addition to the treatments, control plots were set up with no biochar application. We grew cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) in pots for each treatment and examined soil pH, Cd forms, and Cd accumulations in aboveground plant organs. Compared to no added biochar, the addition of biochar significantly increased soil pH, but there was no notable difference in soil pH between the C1 and C2 treatments. Biochar significantly decreased soil-available Cd with this effect increasing with higher biochar doses. The lowest amounts of soil-available Cd in all Cd treatments (H0–H3), including the control, occurred later in the study, typically at 90 to 150 days post treatment. In the cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.), Cd preferentially accumulated the most in leaves, then in stems, and then in bolls and the amount of Cd in cotton and soil-available Cd significantly correlated. The addition of biochar promoted the transformation of exchangeable and carbonate-bound Cd to organic matter-bound Cd at 30, 60, and 90 days, and the exchangeable and carbonate-bound Cd to Fe-Mn oxide-bound Cd at 120 and 150 days. Abstract

The band built on the Kπ = 8−, T1/2 = 9.4 ms isomer of 130Ba has been identified, filling the gap in the systematics of the dipole bands built on the 8− isomers in the N = 74 isotones from 128Xe to 138Gd. The use of the GALILEO array in conjunction with its ancillaries EUCLIDES and Neutron Wall, helped to firmly place the newly identified transitions on top of the long-lived isomer. The extracted gK and gR gyromagnetic factors are in agreement with the 7/2+[404] ⊗ 9/2−[514] two-neutron Nilsson configuration. Particle-rotor model calculations give an understanding of the limited degree of K mixing. The experimental information on the Kπ = 8− isomer of 130Ba is now the most complete among the K isomers of the N = 74 isotones.

Abstract

One new pair of positive-parity chiral doublet bands have been identified in the odd-A nucleus 135Nd which together with the previously reported negative-parity chiral doublet bands constitute a third case of multiple chiral doublet (MχD) bands in the A≈130 mass region. The properties of the MχD bands are well reproduced by constrained covariant density functional theory and particle rotor model calculations. The newly observed MχD bands in 135Nd represents an important milestone in supporting the existence of MχD in nuclei.

Abstract

Participant-level meta-analyses assessed the age-specific relevance of office blood pressure to cardiovascular complications, but this information is lacking for out-of-office blood pressure. At baseline, daytime ambulatory (n=12 624) or home (n=5297) blood pressure were measured in 17 921 participants (51.3% women; mean age, 54.2 years) from 17 population cohorts. Subsequently, mortality and cardiovascular events were recorded. Using multivariable Cox regression, floating absolute risk was computed across 4 age bands (≤60, 61-70, 71-80, and >80 years). Over 236 491 person-years, 3855 people died and 2942 cardiovascular events occurred. From levels as low as 110/65 mm Hg, risk log-linearly increased with higher out-of-office systolic/diastolic blood pressure. Abstract

A variety of theoretical approaches, having different but overlapping energy ranges of applicability, are applied to investigate charge transfer processes for collisions of atomic ions with atoms and molecules. The methods include quantal molecular-orbital close-coupling, classical trajectory Monte Carlo, and continuum distorted wave methods. Recent collision systems studied include S(+4) + H, S(+4) + He, N(+7) + He, H2O, CO, and CO2, O(+q)(q = 1 - 8) + H, H2, and S(+q)(q = 1 - 16) + H2. The database effort is concentrating on astrophysically important reactions of atomic ions X(+q)(X=H-Zn, q=1-4, and selected higher charges) with H, He, various metal atoms, H2, and other selected molecular targets. Existing data, much of it produced by us, has been compiled and critically evaluated. Data for many reactions missing in the literature are estimated using the multichannel Landau-Zener approximation. Fits to cross sections and rate coefficients using standard functions are provided as well as tabulations of the raw data. Abstract

The level structure of ¹³⁶Nd has been investigated using the ¹⁰⁰Mo(⁴⁰Ar, 4n) reaction and the JUROGAM II+RITU+GREAT setup. The level scheme has been extended significantly. Many new bands have been identified both at low and high spin, among which are five nearly degenerate bands interpreted as chiral partners. Excitation energies, spins, and parities of the previously known bands are revised and firmly established, and some previously known bands have been revised. Configurations are assigned to the observed bands based on cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations. The band structure of ¹³⁶Nd is now clarified and the various types of single-particle and collective excitations are well understood.

Abstract

Advanced high intensity accelerators have important applications in pulsed spallation neutron sources, synchrotron radiation light sources, radioactive ion beam facilities, etc. In contrast to traditional high energy physics accelerators, these high intensity accelerators require very high beam currents with relatively low particle energy. A common practice in the design of high intensity machines is to employ large aperture and short length magnets packed densely along beam lines in limited spaces. As a result, magnetic fringe fields become more profound, and the interference among adjacent magnets often causes problems for machine operation. This has become a new challenge for the design of high-intensity accelerators. This book describes how to solve the problems of magnetic fringe fields and interference, and how to correctly compute particle optics in advanced high intensity accelerators. The book has evolved from the author's research on the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The author has developed the theory and technique of 3D-field multipole expansion, assisted by advanced 3D-magnet modeling codes and Mathematica scripts. Advanced 3D-magnet modeling produces accurate, discrete magnetic field data on selected boundaries in magnets. With these simulation data, the 3D-field multipole expansion will produce quasi-analytic field distributions within the boundaries. Furthermore, with mathematical tools, particle optics in magnets can be accurately computed with the fringe fields and interference effects taken into account automatically. The author applied the new theory and technique to the SNS quadrupoles, dipoles, other magnets, and beam transport lines. His new approach also helped to discover and to solve the design problems of the SNS ring injection and extraction during the SNS ring commissioning. These practices are described in great detail in this book, and can be followed by the design of any other accelerator project. In addition, based on the comments and feedback from students and readers, the book also includes many important command input files and Mathematica scripts, which should be very useful and can be directly employed by readers to compute particle optics in their own machines.

Abstract

Xinjiang specialty cheese is produced by natural fermentation of milk. During fermentation, a complex succession of changes takes place in the milk, including pH decline, protein denaturalisation, whey discharge, and etc. The ripening process of Xinjiang specialty cheese was studied for 50 days. Microbial count showed that Lactobacillus helveticus was the dominant strain in the cheese during ripening. The contents of pH 4.6 soluble nitrogen and 12% TCA soluble nitrogen gradually increased during the ripening process of the cheese. An electrophoretogram showed that the degree of protein degradation was high after 30 days of ripening. The contents of total organic acids and free fatty acids were determined by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The results showed that the contents of total organic acids and free fatty acids in the flavour compounds increased significantly (p < 0.01). Twenty-five compounds were detected by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), mainly alkanes, ketones, alcohols, esters, aldehydes, and acids. 248. Epidemiological features of coronavirus disease 2019 in children: a meta-analysis.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: Many studies have been published recently on the characteristics of the clinical manifestations of COVID-19 in children. The quality scores of literature are different, and the incidence of clinical manifestations and laboratory tests results vary greatly. Therefore, a systematic retrospective meta-analysis is needed to determine the incidence of the clinical manifestations of COVID-19 in children. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data from databases, such as PubMed, Web of science, EMBASE, Johns Hopkins University, and Chinese databases were analysed from January 31, 2020 to October 20, 2020. High-quality articles were selected for analysis based on a quality standard score. A meta-analysis of random effects was used to determine the prevalence of comorbidities and subgroup meta-analysis to examine the changes in the estimated prevalence in different subgroups. RESULTS: Seventy-one articles involving 11,671 children were included in the study. The incidence of fever, respiratory symptoms, gastrointestinal symptoms, asymptomatic patients, nervous system symptoms, and chest tightness was 55.8%, 56.8%, 14.4%, 21.1%, 6.7%, and 6.1%, respectively. The incidence of multisystem inflammatory syndrome was 6.2%. Laboratory examination results showed that lymphocytes decreased in 12% and leukocytes decreased in 8.8% of patients, whereas white blood cells increased in 7.8% of patients. Imaging showed abnormalities in 66.5%, and ground-glass opacities were observed in 36.9% patients. Epidemiological history was present in 85.2% cases; severe disease rate was 3.33%. The mortality rate was 0.28%. CONCLUSIONS: The clinical symptoms of COVID-19 in children are mild, and laboratory indicators and imaging manifestations are atypical. While screening children for COVID-19, in addition to assessing patients for symptoms as the first step of screening, the epidemiological history of patients should be obtained.
