Abstract

PURPOSE. To assess retinal toxicity of indocyanine green (ICG) in a porcine ex vivo perfusion organ culture model, and to measure intraretinal penetration of ICG applied to the retinal surface. METHODS. The retinal surface of fresh porcine retinal tissue was exposed to ICG 0.1% and 1% dissolved in glucose 5% for 1 and 30 minutes with and without concomitant illumination. Specimens were then kept in perfusion organ culture for 24 hours before examination by light microscopy and the TUNEL technique. Tissue samples treated with DNAse served as positive controls, and samples exposed to saline served as negative controls. Fluorescence microscopy was used to localize ICG at 1 minute, 60 minutes, 2 hours, and 3 hours after a 1-minute exposure of the retinal surface to ICG 1%. RESULTS. No increase in TUNEL-positive cells was observed after exposure to ICG 0.1% for 1 minute. Moderate apoptosis was found after 1-minute exposure to ICG 1% and 30-minute exposure to ICG 0.1%, and severe apoptosis was found after 30-minute exposure to ICG 1%. Concomitant application of light did not influence the degree of apoptosis. No signs of cell necrosis were found. After 1-minute exposure of the retinal surface, ICG 1% gradually penetrated the entire retina. CONCLUSIONS. ICG induced apoptosis but not necrosis in all nuclear retinal layers in a dose-dependent manner. Brief exposure to ICG 0.1% for 1 minute and illumination for 3 minutes simulated the intraoperative use of ICG. No retinal apoptosis or necrosis was observed. Abstract

The aim of this work is to provide an overview on the recent advances in the selective area growth (SAG) of () nanostructures by plasma assisted molecular beam epitaxy, focusing on their potential as building blocks for next generation LEDs. The first three sections deal with the basic growth mechanisms of SAG and the emission control in the entire ultraviolet to infrared range, including approaches for white light emission, using disks and thick segments on axial nanocolumns. SAG of axial nanostructures is developed on both /sapphire templates and -buffered (111). As an alternative to axial nanocolumns, section 4 reports on the growth and characterization of / core-shell structures on an ordered array of top-down patterned microrods. Finally, section 5 reports on the SAG of , with and without insertion, on semi-polar (11-22) and non-polar (11-20) templates. Upon SAG the high defect density present in the templates is strongly reduced as indicated by a dramatic improvement of the optical properties. In the case of SAG on non-polar (11-22) templates, the formation of nanostructures with a low aspect ratio took place allowing for the fabrication of high-quality, non-polar pseudo-templates by coalescence of these nanostructures. Abstract

We present a transmission electron microscope (TEM) and x-ray diffraction (XRD) study of metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy grown GaN(1 0 ̄1 3) layers on m-sapphire with Al(Ga)N interlayers. The interlayers are demonstrated to be beneficial in reducing the stacking fault (SF) density by more than 2.5 orders of magnitude from >2 × 106 cm-1 to <5 × 103 cm-1 as determined by TEM. XRD measurements along the GaN(1 0 .1 2) to the GaN(1 0 .1 5) reflection reveal a diffraction component originating in the basal plane SFs. Fitting the XRD signal enables a fast and simple determination of SF type and density which can even distinguish between the GaN buffer and the upper GaN layers and which is in reasonable agreement with TEM measurements. As currently applied processes for the production of propene oxide either generate large amounts of undesired by-products or are highly expensive regarding the reactants introduced to the process, it is desirable to epoxidate propene directly by aerial oxygen. Abstract

Objective: Waardenburg syndrome type I (WS I) is an autosomal dominant inherited disorder with an incidence of 1:45,000 in Europe. Mutations within the PAX3 gene are responsible for the clinical phenotype ranging from mild facial features to severe malformations detectable in prenatal diagnosis. Methods: Here, we report a four-generation family with several affected members showing various symptoms of WS I. We diagnosed the syndrome first in a pregnant young woman; she was referred because of a spina bifida in prenatal diagnosis. We performed clinical genetic investigations and molecular genetic analysis in all available family members. Results: The phenotype displays a wide intra-familial clinical variability of pigmentary disturbances, facial anomalies and developmental defects. Molecular studies identified a novel splice site mutation within the PAX3 gene in intron 5 in all affected family members, but in none of the unaffected relatives. Conclusions: This case demonstrates the prenatal diagnosis of spina bifida in a fetus which leads to the initial diagnosis of WS I. Further studies could identify a private splice site mutation within the PAX3 gene responsible for the phenotype in this family. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
