There is an urgent need to identify therapeutics for the treatment of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Although different antivirals are given for the clinical management of SARS-CoV-2 infection, their efficacy is still under evaluation. Here, we have screened existing drugs approved for human use in a variety of diseases, to compare how they counteract SARS-CoV-2-induced cytopathic effect and viral replication in vitro. Among the potential 72 antivirals tested herein that were previously proposed to inhibit SARS-CoV-2 infection, only 18 % had an IC50 below 25 µM or 102 IU/ml. These included plitidepsin, novel cathepsin inhibitors, nelfinavir mesylate hydrate, interferon 2-alpha, interferon-gamma, fenofibrate, camostat along the well-known remdesivir and chloroquine derivatives. Plitidepsin was the only clinically approved drug displaying nanomolar efficacy. Four of these families, including novel cathepsin inhibitors, blocked viral entry in a cell—type specific manner. Since the most effective antivirals usually combine therapies that tackle the virus at different steps of infection, we also assessed several drug combinations. Although no particular synergy was found, inhibitory combinations did not reduce their antiviral activity. Thus, these combinations could decrease the potential emergence of resistant viruses. Antivirals prioritized herein identify novel compounds and their mode of action, while independently replicating the activity of a reduced proportion of drugs which are mostly approved for clinical use. The protective effect of neutralizing antibodies in SARS-CoV-2 infected individuals is not yet well defined. To address this issue, we have analyzed the kinetics of neutralizing antibody responses and their association with disease severity. Between March and May 2020, the prospective KING study enrolled 72 COVID-19+ participants grouped according to disease severity. SARS-CoV-2 infection was diagnosed by serological and virological tests. Plasma neutralizing responses were assessed against replicative virus and pseudoviral particles. Multiple regression and non-parametric tests were used to analyze dependence of parameters. The magnitude of neutralizing titers significantly increased with disease severity. Hospitalized individuals developed higher titers compared to mild-symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals, which together showed titers below the detection limit in 50% of cases. Longitudinal analysis confirmed the strong differences in neutralizing titers between non-hospitalized and hospitalized participants and showed rapid kinetics of appearance of neutralizing antibodies (50% and 80% of maximal activity reached after 11 and 17 days after symptoms onset, respectively) in hospitalized patients. No significant impact of age, gender or treatment on the neutralizing titers was observed in this limited cohort. These data identify a clear association of humoral immunity with disease severity and point to immune mechanisms other than antibodies as relevant players in COVID-19 protection. Mid-Cenozoic widespread arc magmatism in North Patagonia extends from the forearc to the retroarc zones, representing an anomalous large volume when compared to the present-day arc zone and even other past arc configurations. It represents a crucial stage in Andean arc evolution as was developed after a period of arc waning and within plate magmatism. Controversies exist regarding the origin of these volcanic sequences, with scarce integrated field, geochemical and geochronological analyses. We focused our study on the El Maitén Belt, located in the present-day retroarc zone, particularly on a poorly studied section corresponding to the southern outcrops of this volcanic belt. This volcanism consists of basaltic and andesitic lava flows and interbedded pyroclastic deposits, whose emplacement was controlled by extensional tectonics as indicated by the occurrence of wedge-like strata associated with normal faults. A U-Pb age on the basal part of this section shows that magmatic activity started by 37 Ma, earlier than previous studies that considered this volcanism as Oligocene. Geochemically, these rocks are part of the subalkaline and particularly tholeiitic series. All samples show trace element enrichments, depletions and ratios characteristic of arc magmas, though fluids and sediment imprint seem limited. On these bases, we propose decompression melting as the main process associated with the genesis of this volcanism. Therefore, this magmatic association constrained to the late Eocene represents the earliest evidence of arc volcanism in the Patagonian Andes, under an extensional regime, after a Paleogene waning of arc activity. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to focus on the underpinning dynamics that explain collective intelligence. Design/methodology/approach – Collective intelligence can be understood as the capacity of a collective system to evolve toward higher order complexity through networks of individual capacities. The authors observed two collective systems as examples of the dynamic processes of complex networks – the wiki course PeSO at the Universidad de Los Andes, Bogotá, Colombia, and an agent-based model inspired by wiki systems. Findings – The results of the wiki course PeSO and the model are contrasted with a random network baseline model. Both the wiki course and the model show dynamics of accumulation, in which statistical properties of non-equilibrium networks appear. Research limitations/implications – The work is based on network science. The authors analyzed data from two kinds of networks: the wiki course PeSO and an agent-based model. Limitations due to the number of computations and complexity appeared when there was a high order of magnitude of agents. Practical implications – Better understanding can allow for the measurement and design of systems based on collective intelligence. Originality/value – The results show how collective intelligence emerges from cumulative dynamics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Desertification of Central Patagonia began between ~14–12 Ma and therefore was not directly connected to the opening of the Drake Passage and initial conformation of the Antarctica ice cap in early Miocene times. Local processes, in particular the uplift of the Southern Andes, seem to have played a major role in climatic and biotic changes. We studied synorogenic strata filling a partly cannibalized foredeep between ~45° and 47°S at the latitudes of the Chile triple juction. Older synorogenic successions have yielded 18.7–16.4 Ma (U-Pb) in the western sector of the North Patagonian Cordillera corresponding to Meseta Guadal, Jeinemeni and Alto de Río Cisnes sections. This uplift was partly contemporaneous with broken foreland deformation associated with the San Bernardo fold belt to the east at 17.7–15 Ma. Younger synorogenic successions of 13.5 Ma (U-Pb), associated with a short pulse of major uplift that gave way to deposition of a thick conglomeratic succession, and subsequently finer-grained deposits of 12.3 Ma, are on the eastern Andean front in the Chalía and Guenguell sections, implying a retraction in orogenic activity, and out-of-sequence growth of the Patagonian Cordillera. Consequently, contractional deformation in this area ended after ~12 Ma, sealed by the extrusion of extensive alkali flood basalts, indicating that Neogene shortening only lasted ~6 My, ending around 6 My before the subduction of the Chile Ridge at the latitudes of Central Patagonia and 4.5 My before subduction at the southern tip of South America. The most important Cenozoic marine transgression in Patagonia occurred during the late Oligocene–early Miocene when marine waters of Pacific and Atlantic origin flooded most of southern South America including the present Patagonian Andes between ~41° and 47° S. The age, correlation, and tectonic setting of the different marine formations deposited during this period are debated. However, recent studies based principally on U–Pb geochronology and Sr isotope stratigraphy, indicate that all of these units had accumulated during the late Oligocene–early Miocene. The marine transgression flooded a vast part of southern South America and, according to paleontological data, probably allowed for the first time in the history of this area a transient connection between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. Marine deposition started in the late Oligocene–earliest Miocene (~26–23 Ma) and was probably caused by a regional event of extension related to major plate reorganization in the Southeast Pacific. Progressive extension and crustal thinning allowed a generalized marine flooding of Patagonia that reached its maximum extension at ~20 Ma. It was followed by a phase of compressive tectonics that started around 19–16 Ma and led to the growth of the Patagonian Andes. The youngest (~19–15 Ma) marine deposits that accumulated in the eastern Andean Cordillera and the extra-Andean regions are coeval with fluvial synorogenic deposits and probably had accumulated under a compressive regime. Abstract: One of the main causes of mobility’s problem is the rapid increase in vehicle volumes, especially motorcycles. Colombia, ranks second in the production of motorcycles in the region (MinCIT), for 2013 644.751 motorcycles were sold and for 2014 an increase of approximately 15% was obtained, estimating higher figures for 2015. This issue affects studies where conversion is done to the equivalent car unit for the homogenization of the flow, this becomes an alternative concept but less appropriate when the traffic is dominated by motorcycles, due to the high volume and behavior, these demand another conversion. A case study has been developed with the aim of proposing a method for generating conversion factors to motorcycles unit, which are in function of the speed and vehicles effective space when they mobilize in a vehicular flow. The gondwanan magmatism in the San Rafael Massif, known as Choiyoi Magmatic Cycle, was emplaced during the inception of a magmatic arc setting during the early Permian. Two different sections can be differentiated in this volcanic sequence. The lower section (~281 up to ~265 Ma) consisting of andesites and dacitic to low-silica rhyolitic ignimbrites has geochemical characteristics that indicate a subduction zone setting. The upper section (~265 up to ~252 Ma) composed of rhyolitic ignimbrites and lava flows, dacitic to rhyolitic subvolcanics and alkalic basaltic andesites has geochemical characteristics transitional between subduction and continental intraplate settings. Several Cu-(Mo) porphyry deposits are genetically linked to the lower section (Infiernillo, San Pedro and La Chilca-Zanjón del Buitre). In this paper, we discussed the petrogenesis of the magmatism linked to the porphyry deposits from the San Rafael Massif. The petrogenetic analysis suggests that the lower section was produced in a thickened crust resulting in an adakite-like signature magmatism. The U/Pb LA-ICP-MS age of magmatic zircons from an intrusive associated to the San Pedro porphyry (263.1 ± 4.2 Ma) allowed confirming that the emplacement of Cu-Mo porphyry deposits in the San Rafael Massif occurred during the change in the geodynamical conditions from a transpressive to a transtensive tectonic regime. Although the Río de la Plata craton is exposed over a relatively large area in Uruguay, eastern Argentina, and southernmost Brazil, its geological evolution is poorly known because of great geological complexity and paucity of data. We report here U-Pb ages of detrital zircons from samples of five Neoproterozoic sandstone units deposited on the Río de la Plata Craton (RPC) in Uruguay and Argentina. The zircon ages provide definitive evidence of a great range of ages of rocks composing the craton-ages that would not have been known without the geochronology of detrital zircons. In turn, these new ages allow for a much fuller understanding of the nature and history of the craton. Quartz arenites of the Piedras de Afilar Formation show typical Transamazonian ages with peaks at 2.00-2.07, 1.87 and 1.78 Ga. However, the most important zircon population in the sample analyzed is Mesoproterozoic with maxima at 1.49, 1.35, 1.24 and 1.0 Ga. Archean zircons are subordinate. On the other hand, zircons recovered from two sandstone levels in the Arroyo del Soldado Group (Yerbal and Cerros San Francisco formations) are mostly Archean in age with maxima at 3.2 and 2.72-2.78 Ga. Palaeoproterozoic zircons are also prominent in this unit with peaks at 2.45 and 2.19, of which the latter is a typical Transamazonian age. Two samples from the Sierras Bayas Group in Tandilia (Argentina) show different age spectra. Sandstones of the Villa Mónica Formation have a unimodal zircon population of Transamazonian age with a peak at 2.15 Ga. Sandstones of the Cerro Largo Formation are characterized by a dominant Transamazonian zircon population with peaks at 2.15, 2.0 and 1.78, but also display important Archean-earliest Palaeoproterozoic (3.33, 2.99, 2.7, 2.46 Ga) and Mesoproterozoic peaks (1.55, 1.23 and 1.05 Ga). The abundance of Mesoproterozoic detrital zircons is surprising, given the limited outcrop area of Mesoproterozoic units in the RPC. Thus, the Mesoproterozoic orogenic event responsible for the generation of the dextral Sarandí del Yí megashear is much more important than previously assumed. A proto-Andean, Mesoproterozoic belt is suggested as the source of the Mesoproterozoic detritus. Archean rocks of the RPC crop out only in the Nico Pérez Terrane in Uruguay. The presence of Archean zircons in sandstones of the Sierras Bayas Group in Argentina suggests that the Nico Pérez Terrane was much closer to Tandilia than it is today. This is in accordance with the proposed sinistral reactivation of the Sarandí del Yí Shear Zone in the Cambrian, which resulted from tangential collision of the Cuchilla Dionisio-Pelotas Terrane. Finally, the conspicuous absence of Neoproterozoic zircons confirm other lines of evidence suggesting that the Neoproterozoic strata were deposited on a stable continental margin opening to the east and south. The Neoproterozoic basins had obviously no contribution whatsoever from Brasiliano-Pan African belts, supporting the idea of Cambrian terrane accretion as the mechanism responsible for the present configuration of the Río de la Plata Craton and the final amalgamation of Gondwana. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. - Abstract
Rock Aesthetics in Colombian Literature and Culture: Writing the Noise explores the presence of a rock aesthetic in the Colombian literary field and how its pivotal role in creating alternative creative expressions that challenge the dominance of tropicality as the prevailing artistic reference. More than a musical genre or a cultural industry, rock is also an aesthetic: a significant social practice that allows one to understand what people consider beautiful or authentic. Since its birth in the mid-1950s, rock as an aesthetic has expanded worldwide, transforming and establishing dialogues with artistic practices such as literature. Through an analysis of a series of novels, poems, and manifestos written from the 1950s to the early years of the twenty-first century, David Martínez Houghton embarks on a literary, musical, and historical journey. On the way, he explores complex phenomena such as urban violence, the formation of youth identities, the penetration of pop culture, national identity discourses, and even the social and physical transformation of Colombian cities.

- Abstract
This volume brings together scholars across various domains of the history and philosophy of mathematics, investigating duality as a multi-faceted phenomenon. Encompassing both systematic analysis and historical examination, the book endeavors to elucidate the status, roles, and dynamics of duality within the realms of 19th and 20th-century mathematics. Eschewing a priori notions, the contributors embrace the diverse interpretations and manifestations of duality, thus presenting a nuanced and comprehensive perspective on this intricate subject. Spanning a broad spectrum of mathematical topics and historical periods, the book uses detailed case studies to investigate the different forms in which duality appeared and still appears in mathematics, to study their respective histories, and to analyze interactions between the different forms of duality. The chapters inquire into questions such as the contextual occurrences of duality in mathematics, the influence of chosen forms of representation, the impact of investigations of duality on mathematical practices, and the historical interconnections among various instances of duality. Together, they aim to answer a core question: Is there such a thing as duality in mathematics, or are there just several things called by the same name and similar in some respect? What emerges is that duality can be considered as a basic structure of mathematical thinking, thereby opening new horizons for the research on the history and the philosophy of mathematics and the reflection on mathematics in general. The volume will appeal not only to experts in the discipline but also to advanced students of mathematics, history, and philosophy intrigued by the complexities of this captivating subject matter.

- Abstract

- Abstract
During the first decade of the century, Evo Morales and other leftists took control of governments across Latin America. In the case of Bolivia, Morales was that country's first Indigenous president and was elected following five years of popular insurrection after decades of neoliberal governance. Now We Are in Power makes the argument that the so-called Pink Tide should be understood as a passive revolution, a process that has two phases: a period of subaltern struggle from average citizens strong enough to culminate in a political crisis, which is followed by a time of reconciliation and transformation. Angus McNelly examines this movement as it unfolded and evaluates how passive revolution plays out over a prolonged crisis, ultimately demonstrating the inherent contradictions and complications of the process.

- Abstract
Does syllogistic logic have the resources to capture mathematical proof? This volume provides the first unified account of the history of attempts to answer this question, the reasoning behind the different positions taken, and their far-reaching implications. Aristotle had claimed that scientific knowledge, which includes mathematics, is provided by syllogisms of a special sort:'scientific'('demonstrative') syllogisms. In ancient Greece and in the Middle Ages, the claim that Euclid's theorems could be recast syllogistically was accepted without further scrutiny. Nevertheless, as early as Galen, the importance of relational reasoning for mathematics had already been recognized. Further critical voices emerged in the Renaissance and the question of whether mathematical proofs could be recast syllogistically attracted more sustained attention over the following three centuries. Supported by more detailed analyses of Euclidean theorems, this led to attempts to extend logical theory to include relational reasoning, and to arguments purporting to reduce relational reasoning to a syllogistic form. Philosophical proposals to the effect that mathematical reasoning is heterogenous with respect to logical proofs were famously defended by Kant, and the implications of the debate about the adequacy of syllogistic logic for mathematics are at the very core of Kant's account of synthetic a priori judgments. While it is now widely accepted that syllogistic logic is not sufficient to account for the logic of mathematical proof, the history and the analysis of this debate, running from Aristotle to de Morgan and beyond, is a fascinating and crucial insight into the relationship between philosophy and mathematics.

- Abstract

- Abstract
Algebraic Structures in Natural Language addresses a central problem in cognitive science concerning the learning procedures through which humans acquire and represent natural language. Until recently algebraic systems have dominated the study of natural language in formal and computational linguistics, AI, and the psychology of language, with linguistic knowledge seen as encoded in formal grammars, model theories, proof theories and other rule-driven devices. Recent work on deep learning has produced an increasingly powerful set of general learning mechanisms which do not apply rule-based algebraic models of representation. The success of deep learning in NLP has led some researchers to question the role of algebraic models in the study of human language acquisition and linguistic representation. Psychologists and cognitive scientists have also been exploring explanations of language evolution and language acquisition that rely on probabilistic methods, social interaction and information theory, rather than on formal models of grammar induction. This book addresses the learning procedures through which humans acquire natural language, and the way in which they represent its properties. It brings together leading researchers from computational linguistics, psychology, behavioral science and mathematical linguistics to consider the significance of non-algebraic methods for the study of natural language. The text represents a wide spectrum of views, from the claim that algebraic systems are largely irrelevant to the contrary position that non-algebraic learning methods are engineering devices for efficiently identifying the patterns that underlying grammars and semantic models generate for natural language input. There are interesting and important perspectives that fall at intermediate points between these opposing approaches, and they may combine elements of both. It will appeal to researchers and advanced students in each of these fields, as well as to anyone who wants to learn more about the relationship between computational models and natural language.

- Abstract
This book takes an idea first explored by medieval logicians 800 years ago and revisits it armed with the tools of contemporary linguistics, logic, and computer science. The idea - the Holy Grail of the medieval logicians - was the thought that all of logic could be reduced to two very simple rules that are sensitive to logical polarity (for example, the presence and absence of negations). Ludlow and%Zivanović pursue this idea and show how it has profound consequences for our understanding of the nature of human inferential capacities. They also show its consequences for some of the deepest issues in contemporary linguistics, including the nature of quantification, puzzles about discourse anaphora and pragmatics, and even insights into the source of aboutness in natural language. The key to their enterprise is a formal relation they call'p-scope'- a polarity-sensitive relation that controls the operations that can be carried out in their Dynamic Deductive System. They show that with p-scope in play, deductions can be carried out using sublogical operations like those they call COPY and PRUNE - operations that are simple syntactic operations on sentences. They prove that the resulting deductive system is complete and sound. The result is a beautiful formal tapestry in which p-scope unlocks important properties of natural language, including the property of'restrictedness,'which they prove to be equivalent to the semantic notion of conservativity. More than that, they show that restrictedness is also a key to understanding quantification and discourse anaphora, and many other linguistic phenomena.

- Abstract

- Abstract
1943. Four months into the Nazi occupation of Tunisia. You're imprisoned in a labour camp. You're buried up to your neck in earth. You're dying of thirst, you miss your wife, and your best friend just pissed on your face. How could things possibly get any worse? Josh Azouz's Once Upon A Time in Nazi Occupied Tunisia is a brutally comic play about home and identity, marriage and survival, blood and feathers. It was first produced at the Almeida Theatre, London, in August 2021, directed by Eleanor Rhode.
