It is indeed an uncommon situation, that a large area in need of conservation steps directly, without any intermediate stage, from oblivion into the jet and television age.

The word zapping corresponds to an Anglo-Saxon neologism that defines the practice of changing television channels at the mercy of remote control. In our country this term was practically unknown until the introduction of private television. It is not that this phenomenon was not present before, since it existed for quite some time. From the moment that there is more than one television channel, it is possible that the phenomenon of zapping occurs and the greater the number of channels, the more possibilities to zap.

Consciously based on a new concept of television and the viewer, MTV, The Music Television Channel, is now a significant factor on the European media scene. MTV claims to be able to deliver the young audience to advertisers on a global basis. However, since comparatively little research has so far been done into MTV's European audience, it is difficult to adjudicate this claim. Results from a survey of 789 Flemish adolescents are reported which indicate that MTV-Europe has indeed become established with, and is popular among, young viewers. Some consequences of this development and implications for future television research are discussed

In all countries where there is more than one television channel the problem of combining the presumed benefits of competition with assumed social objectives of public broadcasting policy have shown themselves to be complex if not intractable. In the United Kingdom, the creation of Independent Television served to provide competition for the BBC, but the two organisations operated under broadly similar remits not all aspects of which could be reconciled with adversarial postures. Over the objections of those who warned it could have dangerous consequences, a public access television channel in Eugene, Oregon, ran a video showing viewers how to commit suicide and how to help others commit suicide. The video, “Final exit,” was written and narrated by Derek Humphry, a proponent of suicide and practitioner of assisted-suicide. Humphry is founder of the Hemlock Society and author of a book called Final exit.

LEARNING OUTCOME: To develop an organized means of providing discharge nutrition education for cardiac catheterization patients. Lack of an effective communication network on the in-patient floor serving cardiac patients led to patients being discharged without adequate nutrition education and heightened tensions between nursing and nutrition staff. The procedure in place at this time, involved nursing or the floor unit secretary paging the floor dietitian just prior to the patient's discharge time. This short notice often did not allow adequate time to instruct the patient properly, if at all, and interfered with other dietitian job responsibilities. Our goal was to develop a more organized means of delivering important nutrition information to cardiac patients while improving the quality of that education. At an interdisciplinary meeting among nursing and nutrition staff a new means of alerting the dietitian to cardiac patients needing discharge education was devised. A sign up sheet with morning and afternoon slots was prepared. Nursing agreed to list daily morning and afternoon discharges and the dietitians agreed to see patients on the list between 9 am and 10 am for morning discharges and between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. for afternoon discharges. After seeing the patient, the dietitian crosses the patient name off the list so that nursing would know the patient has been instructed. A videotape was also made available on the patient television channel in the event that a dietitian was unavailable to provide instruction, which was often the case on weekends due to reduced staffing. A policy for the new procedure was written and distributed to nursing, the unit secretaries and to the dietitians. The discharge education materials for cardiac education were also revised. From May 1996 through January 1997 nursing listed 168 patients requiring discharge education. Ninety-three percent of these patients were seen by the dietitian for discharge instruction. In addition, a patient and nursing satisfaction survey was circulated. Of the responders, 100% were highly satisfied with the program.

The author was based at the Educational Television Centre in Tel‐Aviv with a remit to study the development of educational television in Israel from its inception in 1966. The article briefly discusses the political and technological factors which led to the development of an educational television channel in Israel. At that time television in Israel consisted solely of educational television broadcasts in the mornings and afternoons. This was extended when the Israeli Broadcasting Authority started to broadcast on the one Israeli channel in the evening slot. The article concentrates on the recent development of educational television and its bid for a new niche in the constellation of Israeli broadcasting. In certain respects the transmission characteristics of a communication channel designed for television service differ somewhat from those of a channel designed for telephony. Such differences entail the easurement of parameters not adequately covered by the usual transmission measurements. The paper is intended to indicate the manner in which the problem has been at least partially solved by providing special test apparatus utilizing television-type waveforms.

The range and scope of the uses of television for industrial purposes are indicated to give some of the design requirements and to show broadly how they have been met with reference to a particular television channel employing a vidicon camera tube. The limitation on the rate at which information can be transmitted over an ordinary telephone channel is a human one. In this study people read words as fast as they were able to; from these results some deductions are made about the capacity of a human being as an information channel. The L3 coaxial system is a new broadband facility for use with existing and new coaxial cables. A means was devised to measure simultaneously spatial as well as temporal characteristics of visual receptive fields by stimulating the retina with the noise obtained on an unused television channel. The input, television snow, and the output, neural response, were recorded on a video tape. The tape was played back to obtain the (linear) spatio-temporal Wiener kernel by cross-correlating the input with the output. This method can be applied to extract the linear part of the visual responses in time and space.

El presente artículo presenta los resultados a los que se ha llegado tras realizar un análisis de contenido a más de 2.000 personajes y más de 100 programas emitidos en horario de prime time en seis cadenas televisivas. A description is given of measurements made to compare the propagation of v.h.f. signals over paths in Cardigan Bay and the Irish Sea, some of which involve transmission over high mountain ridges. Comparisons are made, based on simple knife-edge diffraction theory used together with published propagation data, between the expected and measured field strengths at various distances beyond the Isle of Man mountain ridge. The results of the second series of experiments are applied to confirm that interference between co-channel television stations at Winter Hill, Lancashire and Black Mountain, Belfast should be at an acceptable level.
