1. The kinetics of the thermal decomposition of bis-(2,2-dinitropropyl)-N-nitrosoamine, bis-(2,2-dinitro-2-fluoroethyl)-N-nitrosoamine, and bis-(2,2,2-trinitroethyl)-N-nitrosoamine was studied. 2. The reactions are described by a first-order equation. The activation energies and preexponential factors were determined. 3. The reaction center in the bis-(2,2,2-trinitroethyl)-N-nitrosoamine molecule is the trinitromethyl group, while in the other two compounds it is the nitrosoamine group. The mechanism of the decomposition is discussed. 4. The enthalpy of formation of the (NO2)2CCH2N(NO)CH2C(NO2)3 radical was calculated.

The kinetics of the conversion of a series of N-nitroso(nitroalkyl)amines into N-nitro (nitroalkyl)amines under the action of concentrated solutions of HNO3 have been studied and the activation parameters have been determined. 2. The dependences of the rate constants on these reactions on the acidity of the medium and on Taft's induction constants have been investigated. 3. A proposed mechanism has been given of the transformation of N-nitroso(nitroalkyl)-amines into N-nitro(nitroalkyl)amines under the action of HNO3.

1. A study has been made of the electronic and vibrational spectra of (nitroalkyl)nitrosamines. It has been shown that an increase in the substituent electronegativity leads to a bathochromic shift in the long-wave maximum. The nitrosamine absorption band has been identified by the isotopic substitution method. 2. The frequencies of the nitroso group stretching vibrations in the IR spectrum, and the short-wave absorption band in the UV spectra, have been correlated with N-N bond energies. 3. Frequencies and normal vibration forms for the nitrosamine group have been calculated.

The thermochemical characteristics were determined experimentally and the energies of the nitrogen-nitrogen bonds calculated for certain alkyl- and polynitroalkyl-N-nitrosoamines and the corresponding N-nitroamines. 2. The energy of the nitrogen-nitrogen bond in N-nitrosoamines may vary in the range 40–55 kcal, depending on the electronegativity of the substituent at the amino nitrogen atom.

In the N-nitration of N-(nitroso)nitroalkylamines by concentrated deuteronitric acid, a significant kinetic isotope effect is observed for bis(2,2-dinitropropyl)-N-nitrosoamine and bis(2,2-dinitrobutyl)-N-nitrosoamine. In the case of bis(2-fluoro-2,2-dinitroethyl)-N-nitrosoamine, the value of kH/kD is quite small. 2. The observed difference in the kinetic H/D isotope effects is explained by the mechanisms of conversion of the N-nitrosoamines, and it is related to the influence of the nitroalkyl substituants.

An experimental investigation was made of a Raman laser emitting picosecond optical pulses from an LiIO3 crystal (λl = 1.143 μm), pumped synchronously by a train of pulses from a phosphate neodymium glass laser with mode self-locking (λp = 1.054 μm). The time characteristics of the Raman laser radiation were determined as a function of the mismatch of the resonator lengths. When the resonator lengths were matched, the duration of the output pulses was shortened by a factor of 7 or 8 compared with the pump pulses. In this case, the duration of the output pulses was ~ 1 ps and the energy conversion efficiency was ~ 30%.

1. Some nitrosopolynitroazaalkanes of variable structure were obtained, which simultaneously contain15N in both the nitroso and amino groups. 2. It was shown that 3-nitroso-(15N)-1,1,5,5-tetranitro-3-azapentane can be fluorinated in aqueous methanol directly to 1,5-difluoro-3-nitroso-(15N)-1,1,5,5-tetranitro-3-azapentane.

An investigation is made of the feasibility of using various uniaxial and biaxial nonlinear crystals to measure the autocorrelation function of a single picosecond optical pulse using the second-harmonic beam method. General requirements are formulated for the wave interaction geometry in a crystal in order to maximize the temporal resolution and sensitivity of the autocorrelator. An analysis is made of LiIO3, KDP, KB5O84H2O and LiCHOOH2O crystals. The optimum interaction geometry is determined and the scanning duration and upper measurement limit are calculated for each crystal. Measurements of these quantities are reported for an LiIO3 crystal autocorrelator.

1. Nitroalkylamines of variable structure were nitrosated by nitrous acid and its chloro- and fluoro-derivatives. On the example of 1,1,1,6,6,6-hexanitro-3-azapentane it was shown that weakly basic amines do not react with ClNO in nonpolar organic solvents. 2. The obtained nitroalkyl-N-nitrosamines are smoothly converted to N-nitramines by treatment with cone, nitric acid, but are not oxidized by trifluoroperacetic acid.

3-Fluoro-3, 3-dinitro-1-aminopropane condenses with CH2O and 1,1-dinitroalkanes to form Mannich bases which are readily converted to the corresponding N-nitro- and N-nitroso derivatives.
