This article presents the case of a 37-year-old man who presented for localized swelling and tenderness of his left leg below the knee. He suspected a spider bite. Examination revealed an area of erythema with a fluctuant area in the middle. His pulse rate was 115 and his blood pressure was 116/78 mm Hg. The clinical problem is discussed with a focus on soft-tissue infections caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Necrotic skin lesions are a common presentation of staph infection and are often incorrectly attributed to bites by brown recluse spiders or insect bites. Therapy options are presented from topical applications to surgery.
