206. Congenital Malformations' Syndrome in Cebu Cattle in Peru

Abstract

It is very common to blame inheritance as the cause of congenital malformations; however, the majority of defects are caused by environmental factors or by non-inherited chromosomal abnormalities; the latter are mainly developmental accidents. Environmental teratogens act at the time of embrionic implantacion or later. Embrionic or fetal cells undergoing active differenciation are more susceptible.---The most important environmental teratogens are (1): A) Toxic plants; 1- Lupinus spp. 2- Astragalus spp. 3- Conium maculatum, 4- Nicotiana spp. 5- About a dozen of other genus are capable of causing congenital malformations. B) Viruses; 1- Akabane, 2- Other Bunyavirus (Aino, Cache Valley), 3- Blue Tongue, 4- BVD, 5- EEV, and others. C) Physical Factors (e.g. irradiation, temperature). D) Chemicals (e.g. pesticides, anthelmintics). E) Minerals; 1- non-nutrient minerals (e.g. cadmium, lead); 2- nutrient minerals excess or deficiencies (e.g. copper, manganese and zinc deficiencies; excess of selenium). Abstract

Two unrelated children were found to have de novo opposite imbalances for distal 14q. One had a 46,XY, del(14)(q24q32) karyotype and exhibited, like three other patients with similar deletions, a distinctive facial appearance including round face, frontal hypertrichosis, thick eyebrows, horizontal narrow palpebral fissures, a short bulbous nose with a flat root, and mild micrognathia. The other had a 46,XX, dir dup(14)(q22----q32) karyotype and stigmata common to patients with comparable duplications, namely high forehead, sparse eyebrows, prominent overlip, gingival hypertrophy, and overriding fingers. Therefore, it is concluded that each of these imbalances originates a distinct syndrome.

Abstract

A 5-month-old girl with the classical dysmorphism of the 9p trisomy syndrome and a severe heart defect was found to have an unbalanced translocation of 9pter--p22 onto q35 of a chromosome 4 with an inverted duplication of q32--q35. This concurrence of two de novo rearrangements suggests that the breakpoint at 4q35 not only participated in the translocation but also predisposed to the segmental duplication of 4q.

Abstract

The aim of this article was to compare the expression of p53 protein in oral lichen planus (OLP) and oral lichenoid reaction (OLR). The study population consisted of 65 patients— 31 diagnosed with OLP and 3 4 with OLR. The results showed more p53 positive cases in the OLP group than in the OLR group. However, the difference between the 2 groups was not statistically significant (P= 0.114). The most common immunolocalization was observed at the basal cell layer. Due to the chance of potential future malignancy, follow -up for all cases is recommended. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

To survive, corals possess a variety of active and passive defenses. This study examined the effectiveness of aggregation and cnidae development as defensive strategies in enhancing post-settlement survival and growth of two brooding corals, Favia fragum and Porites astreoides, in Bermuda. Growth and survival of solitary and aggregated spat were monitored over seven weeks; cnidae were extracted from surviving spat. F. fragum aggregated spat had higher mortality, slower growth, and more cnidae than solitary spat. On the other hand, aggregation proved beneficial for P. astreoides spat, which had significantly lower mortality, faster growth, and fewer cnidae. Aggregated and solitary F. fragum spat displayed negative correlations between cnidae density and growth, suggesting a trade-off between defense and growth; however, P. astreoides spat did not demonstrate such a trade-off. These differing responses suggest that early patterns of survivorship and defensive strategies are highly species specific and complex. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A calorimetric sensor has been developed for local and direct measurement of calorific dissipations in different parts of the human body. The constructed prototype has a detection surface of 36 cm. In this paper, a deconvolution method is proposed to reconstruct the dissipated power. The advantage of this method is that: to determine the dissipated power, it is not necessary to correct the baselines to calculate either the areas of the calorimetric signal or that of the dissipated power in the temperature control because the proposed method takes into account, apart from the calorimetric signal, the thermostat temperature and the ambient temperature. Abstract

Upper gastrointestinal tract bleeding is a common emergency whose most common etiology is a peptic ulcer. Restoration of intravascular volume and blood pressure management are priorities before identifying the cause of bleeding. After initial resuscitation and after hemodynamic stabilization has been achieved, an esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) should be performed to identify the cause of bleeding and determine the treatment needed. This is a study performed at a third level referral hospital in Cundinamarca, Colombia. Materials and Methods: This is a retrospective study of data from electronic medical records of adult patients admitted to the emergency room of the Hospital Universitario de la Samaritana (HUS) because of upper gastrointestinal tract bleeding which ahd been diagnosed because of hematemesis, melena, rectal bleeding and/or anemia. Patients all underwent EGD between April 2010 and April 2011. Results: 385 patients with upper gastrointestinal tract bleeding were seen during the study period, but 100 were excluded because of bleeding secondary esophageal varices, incomplete clinical histories and lower gastrointestinal bleeding. A total of 285 patients were included. 69.1 % were older than 60 years, 73.3 % had hypertension, 55.1 % reported use of infl ammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and aspirin (ASA), 19.6 % reported previous bleeding episodes, and 17.9 % had hemodynamic instability. 63 patients (22.1 %) required endoscopic hemostasis, and 32 (11.2 %) experienced rebleeding. Overall mortality reported was 13.1 % of which 55.3 % were men. Mortality attributable to gastrointestinal bleeding was 3.1 %. Conclusions: The majority of patients served by the HUS with upper GI bleeding are adults over 60 years. Peptic ulcers remain the most common diagnosis associated with the use of NSAIDs and ASA.
