On the occasion of the birth centenary of Professor Raj Chandra Bose, who made epoch-making contributions to various branches of Mathematics and Statistics, the Indian Statistical Institute organized R. C. Bose Centenary Symposium on Discrete Mathematics and Applications during 20 to 23 December 2002 at its campus at 203, B. T. Road, Kolkata 700 108.The topics included Combinatorics and Graph Theory, Design of Experiments, Coding Theory, Cryptology, Combinatorial Optimization, Algorithms and Applications.The papers submitted were pre-refereed by the members of the Editorial Committee formed for the purpose and the present volume of Electronic Notes in Discrete Mathematics contains (extended) abstracts of the papers/talks chosen for presentation in the Symposium. The full papers are being refereed further and those accepted will be included in the Proceedings which will appear as a special volume of Discrete Mathematics.Besides the papers included in this volume, there were talks by Prof. D.K. Ray-Chaudhuri on Candalabra systems, group-divisible t-designs, and a new infinite family of Steiner 3-designs, by Prof. Neil Robertson on Strong Perfect Graph Theorem and by Prof. M. C. Golumbic on Advances on Tolerance graphs and Related Families.I thank the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India and Reserve Bank of India for the financial support provided by them. Identification of splice sites is important due to their key role in predicting the exon-intron structure of protein coding genes. Though several approaches have been developed for the prediction of splice sites, further improvement in the prediction accuracy will help predict gene structure more accurately. This paper presents a computational approach for prediction of donor splice sites with higher accuracy. In this approach, true and false splice sites were first encoded into numeric vectors and then used as input in artificial neural network (ANN), support vector machine (SVM) and random forest (RF) for prediction. ANN and SVM were found to perform equally and better than RF, while tested on HS3D and NN269 datasets. Further, the performance of ANN, SVM and RF were analyzed by using an independent test set of 50 genes and found that the prediction accuracy of ANN was higher than that of SVM and RF. All the predictors achieved higher accuracy while compared with the existing methods like NNsplice , MEM , MDD , WMM , MM1 , FSPLICE , GeneID and ASSP , using the independent test set. We have also developed an online prediction server (PreDOSS) available at http://cabgrid.res.in:8080/predoss , for prediction of donor splice sites using the proposed approach. The chemopreventive properties of a Spirulina fusiformis (blue green algae) suspension in olive oil on 7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene(DMBA) induced skin papillomagenesis in female Swiss albino mice are beingreported. A significant reduction in the values of tumor incidence, tumorburden and cumulative number of papillomas was observed in mice treated orallywith Spirulina fusiformis suspension continuously at pre-, peri-and post-initiation stages of papillomagenesis as compared to the controlgroup. Treatment of Spirulina fusiformis suspension by oralgavage for 15 days resulted in a significant decrease in the cytochrome P-450content of the liver (p < 0.01) . Conversely, glutathione S-transferaseactivity was observed to be significantly elevated as compared with the controlgroup (p < 0.1) following treatment with Spirulina fusiformis suspension. Abstract: Tardive dyskinesia is a severe debilitating movement disorder characterized by choreoathetotic movements developing in one-fifth of the patients with schizophrenia. In this study we have investigated the significance of CYP3A4*1B and CYP2D6*4 polymorphisms in TD susceptibility among chronic schizophrenia patients (n=335) from north India. Tardive dyskinesia was diagnosed in ∼29% (96/335) of these patients. No significant association of either of the two SNPs with TD (CYP3A4*1B χ2=0. 308, df=1, p=0.579; CYP2D6*4 χ2=0.006, df=1, p=0.935) was observed. However a trend towards increased severity of TD in patients heterozygous for the CYP2D6*4 mutation was observed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) is one of the important molecular markers widely used in animal breeding program for improvement of any desirable genetic traits. Considering this, the present study was carried out to identify, annotate and analyze the SNPs related to four important traits of buffalo viz. milk volume, age at first calving, post-partum cyclicity and feed conversion efficiency. We identified 246,495, 168,202, 74,136 and 194,747 genome-wide SNPs related to mentioned traits, respectively using ddRAD sequencing technique based on 85 samples of Murrah Buffaloes. Distribution of these SNPs were highest (61.69%) and lowest (1.78%) in intron and exon regions, respectively. Under coding regions, the SNPs for the four traits were further classified as synonymous (4697) and non-synonymous (3827). Moreover, Gene Ontology (GO) terms of identified genes assigned to various traits. These characterized SNPs will enhance the knowledge of cellular mechanism for enhancing productivity of water buffalo through molecular breeding. • We identified genome-wide SNPs related to milk volume, age at first calving, post-partum cyclicity & feed conversion efficiency in buffalo. • SNPs were found in intronic (61.69%), intergenic (17.71%), upstream (8.88%), downstream (8.70%) & exonic (1.78%) regions. • SNPs classified as modifier (99.01%), low (0.53%), moderate (0.41%) and high (0.05%) class impact classifier. • SNPs were characterized in terms of various components as their chromosomal location, type, functional class and impact. The study was undertaken to decipher the microRNA (miRNA) related markers associated with corpus luteum (CL) tropism in buffalo. The data obtained from deep sequencing of CL tissue from different physiological stages was mined in silico for the identification of miRNA-related markers (SSR & SNP). From the present study, 5 annotated and 176 unannotated miRNA were deduced while comparing with Bos taurus genome. In addition, 4 SSRs and 9 SNPs were deduced from the miRNA sequences. These SSRs were on the genes viz. Eukaryotic translation initiation factor 1-like, myocyte enhancer factor 2A, beta casein, T cell receptor gamma cluster 1. The SNP positions on genes viz. PYGO1 (Pygopus family PHD finger 1), LOC100337244 (Multidrug resistance-associated protein 4), FTH1 (Ferritin heavy chain 1), LOC788634 (BOLA class I histocompatibility antigen), PLXND1 (Plexin D1) and UBC (Ubiquitin C) show that these genes play critical role in CL tropism during estrous cycle in buffalo. • First study to decipher the microRNA related markers associated with corpus luteum tropism in buffalo. • We deduced 5 annotated and 176 unannotated miRNA while comparing with Bos taurus genome in addition to 4 SSRs and 9 SNPs from miRNA sequences. • Location of SSRs on Eukaryotic translation initiation factor 1-like, myocyte enhancer factor 2A, beta casein, T cell receptor gamma cluster 1 genes and SNPs on Pygopus family PHD finger 1, Ferritin heavy chain 1, Plexin D1 and Ubiquitin C genes.
