To understand the determinants of school success and how academic trajectories are built throughout schooling is still a relevant study aim in Education and Psychology research. Moreover, the increasing number of Portuguese and European adolescents who fail in school and who are not in any educational system, nor in the job market, nor training, also stresses the importance of this kind of study. The present research intends to analyze which personal and contextual variables explain academic performance, and how these variables influence the definition of students’ academic trajectories. Using a longitudinal design, 399 middle school students were assessed during three years. Four empirical studies were developed, merging variable and person-centered approaches. The first one, called “The influence of psychological and socio-parental variables in academic performance: an exploratory analysis”, examined the influence of a set of psychological, social, and parental variables in school performance on 7th and 9th grades. The second, entitled "Between family and student: evidence of a mediation model in the explanation of school performance", assessed the direct and indirect effects of social-parental variables in school performance, underlining the mediation role of psychological variables. The third study, called “The relationship between intelligence and academic achievement throughout middle school: the role of students’ prior academic performance”, analyzed the predictive power of intelligence in school performance throughout schooling. Finally, the fourth study, "School profiles in middle school: a combination of psychological, social, parental and school variables", examined how these variables were combined and clustered in different school profiles. The main results show that, for these participants, intelligence, academic self-concept, and academic goals predict school performance. Additionally, despite the relevance of cognitive variables, these only retain their predictive ability over time by the influence of students’ previous level of knowledge and prior academic performance. In turn, mothers' educational attainment and parental support are the only parental variables that directly predict school performance. Parental aspirations indirectly explain school performance obtained in 7th and 9th grades, by the influence of the students' academic selfconcept. Parental academic aspirations also predict indirectly the school performance in 7th grade by the influence of students' learning goals. From the combination of all variables in study emerge three typologies of students: the academic success group, the school failure not engaged with the school group, and the school failure engaged with the school group. These results contribute for a better understanding of school success and adolescents’ academic trajectories, emphasizing its multifaceted and multidimensional nature. Several changes in educational and psychological practices are pointed out, not only regarding the cognitive assessment of students with learning disabilities, but also concerning the way in which schools, teachers, parents, and students conceive and evaluate academic success and failure. The parents' role is stressed as a key-element to students' academic success, and the need for more permanent and effective dialogue between family and school is pointed out. The redefinition of "school success" and the development of educational policies that focus on students’ singularities and on their contexts enable more inclusive education systems and a greater democratization of academic success., Este projeto foi financiado pela Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT) através da atribuição da Bolsa de Doutoramento com a referência SFRH/BD/71506/2010. more...

Forcipomyia (Microhelea) paulista nov. sp. is known only from the type locality in São Paulo State, Brazil, at 850 m, in an Atlantic rainforest area (Fig. 1). Female adults were found biting on a female adult specimen of Paraphasma paulense (Phasmida). Taxonomic discussion. Forcipomyia (Microhelea) paulista nov. sp. is the 14th species described from Brazil, and the first species described from São Paulo State. The new species keys out in Clastrier and Wirth (1995) according to the following couplets: 1.3. Maxilla with a single row of regular transversal plates; 6.1. Abdominal pleura covered with sparse setae and without modified setae (as a scale); 7.1. Antenna bicolored; 8.2. Palpus unicolored. The new species does not fit with any of the steps (10, 11, 12, or 13) in couplet 9, nor does it correspond with any of the other described species in the key. Following the key and descriptions provided by Clastrier and Wirth (1995), F. (M.) paulista nov. sp. seems to be morphologically similar to Forcipomyia (Microhelea) alleni Clastrier and Wirth, 1995 (from Costa Rica), Forcipomyia (Microhelea) castneri Clastrier and Wirth, 1995 (from Peru and Brazil), Forcipomyia (Microhelea) grandcolasi Clastrier and Wirth, 1995 (from French Guiana), and Forcipomyia (Microhelea) tettigonaris Wirth and Castner, 1990 (from Peru). However, the new species clearly differs from the other species belonging to the subgenus Forcipomyia (Microhelea), mainly by the structures of the mouthparts. The species Forcipomyia (Microhelea) brasiliana Clastrier and Wirth, 1995 (Peru), Forcipomyia. (Microhelea) breelandi Clastrier and Wirth, 1995 (Panama), Forcipomyia (Microhelea) kawensis Clastrier and Wirth, 1995 (French Guiana), Forcipomyia (Microhelea) nigrimaxillata Clastrier and Wirth, 1995 (Peru), Forcipomyia (Microhelea) thomasi Clastrier and Wirth, 1995 (Brazil), and Forcipomyia (Microhelea) wagneri (Séguy, 1941) (Brazil) are easily distinguished from F. (M.) paulista nov. sp. by, for example, the following morphological characters: the globular labellum present in F. (M.) brasiliana and F. (M.) thomasi; the labellum length, which is extremely short in F. (M.) breelandi and F. (M.) wagneri; and the maxilla strongly sclerotized in F. (M.) kawensis and F. (M.) nigrimaxillata. The mouthparts have the main diagnostic characters that help to differentiate species belonging to the subgenus Forcipomyia (Microhelea). Forcipomyia (M.) alleni has two short spines at the extreme distal of the maxilla, followed by six plates, whereas F. (M.) paulista nov. sp. has 12 transversal plates in the maxilla, and no spines. Forcipomyia (M.) castneri has 25 denticles in the mandible and 21 plates in the maxilla; in addition, the labellum is longer than the other mouthparts and the halter is black. On the other hand, F. (M.) paulista nov. sp. has only 20 denticles in the mandible and 12 plates in the maxilla; in addition, the labellum is shorter than the other mouthparts and the halter is yellowish. Forcipomyia (M.) grandcolasi has a darker mandible, with 22 denticles, and 22 irregular transversal plates in the maxilla; in addition, the labellum is extremely short, exposing the remaining mouthparts. Finally, F. (M.) tettigonaris has 17 denticles in the mandible, and five linear formations and 10 plates in the maxilla; in addition, the labellum is longer than the other mouthparts. The remaining 28 species treated by Clastrier and Wirth (1995) are easily distinguished from F. (M.) paulista nov. sp. by the following morphological characters: maxilla with more than a single range of plates; abdominal pleura with modified setae (scales-like setae); and palpus bicolored. Considering the different biomes that have not yet been sampled in Brazil and South America, especially those biomes where the occurrence of the hosts of Forcipomyia (Microhelea) is known and recorded, we believe that a considerable part of the diversity of this taxon remains unknown and undescribed. Type material. Holotype ♀, labeled “ BRAZIL, São Paulo, Salesópolis, Estação Biológica de Boracéia, 23°38ʹS 45°52ʹW, 900 m, leg. F.F.Albertoni ” (MZUSP). We describe and illustrate a new species of biting midge belonging to the subgenus Forcipomyia (Microhelea), from the Estação Biológica de Boracéia, São Paulo State, Brazil. We include illustrations of the mouthparts, head, thorax, legs, abdominal setae, and habitus. The new species is similar to the few other recorded Neotropical species of biting midges, such as Forcipomyia (Microhelea) alleni, Forcipomyia (Microhelea) castneri, Forcipomyia (Microhelea) grandcolasi, and Forcipomyia (Microhelea) tettigonaris. However, it can be distinguished by the combination of external characters, such as the number of plates on the maxilla, the number of denticles on the mandible, the size of the labellum, and the morphology of the palpus. The two female specimens examined were found biting on a female stick bug, Paraphasma paulense (Phasmida: Pseudophasmatidae), which was attracted to a light trap. more...

Colour stability ,Discolouration ,Bismuth oxide ,White mineral trioxide aggregate - Abstract
Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate and compare chromatic alterations of an inorganic silicate-based cement, also known as white mineral trioxide aggregate (WMTA), submitted to different environmental conditions using the CIE L*a*b* system evaluated by two different methods. Methods: Twenty-four samples of WMTA (ProRoot® MTA, Dentsply Tulsa Dental, Johnson City, TN) were randomly distributed in four groups (n=4). In group 1 the samples did not undergo any additional treatment (negative control group). In group 2 WMTA samples were light irradiated for 60 seconds using a LED poliwave curing unit. In group 3 and 4 WMTA samples were coated with a layer of glycerine and adhesive, respectively and light irradiated for 60 seconds. A commercial spectrophotometer (VITA Easyshade® Advance 4.0, VidentTM, California, USA) and calibrated photographic digital analysis were used to determine colour coordinates from the CIE L*a*b* system of each sample after three different time points: 30 minutes, 48 hours and 7 days. In order to understand the chemical alterations associated to colour variations of the material x-ray diffraction analysis was also conducted. Data was analysed using statistical software IBM® SPSS® Statistics, version 20. Results: Consistency between the two colour measuring methods was not observed. Significant colour variation was observed for group 3. X-ray diffraction analysis showed no differences between compounds. Conclusion: WMTA showed significant dark discolouration after irradiation with an LED poliwave curing unit in an oxygen-free environment promoted by glycerine although after 48 hours discolouration had faded. The same light irradiation protocol associated to an oxygen-free conditions achieved by an adhesive resin layer did not induce significant discolouration at the end of the experiment protocol. more...

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the initial results after the implementation of perioperative protocol in patients over 60 years of age undergoing surgical treatment for femur fractures. METHODS: We conducted a prospective study of patients older than 60 years who were hospitalized with femur fracture. They were operated under spinal anesthesia and analgesia by lumbar plexus blockade. Data evaluation was performed before arrival in the operating room during surgery, in the post-anesthesia recovery room and in the ward the next morning of the operation. RESULTS: 105 patients underwent various types of surgical corrections of the femur. The hospital stay ranged from three to 86 days. Fasting ranged from 9h15min to 19h30mn. Hypotension occurred in 5.7%. The duration of motor blockade ranged from 1h45min to 5h30imn. Maltodextrin feeding ranged from 50min to 3h45min and the time spent in the post-anesthetic care unit ranged from 50 minutes to 4 hours. Onset of oral intake in the ward ranged from 4hto 8h15min. The duration of anesthesia ranged from 14 to 33 hours. No patient required a urinary catheter, nor was transferred to the ICU. All patients were able to be discharged on the first postoperative day. CONCLUSION: The use of a protocol to accelerate the postoperative period may reduce the fasting time, length of hospital stay and provide faster i discharge n elderly patients with femur fractures. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2014-01-01 Background and Objectives: Spinal anesthesia for surgical repair of hip fracture in the elderly is associated with a high incidence of hypotension. The aim of this study was to compare the hemodynamic effects of a single injection of low dose (7.5 mg) versus full dose (15 mg) of isobaric bupivacaine. Methodology: Fifty patients older than 60 years undergoing surgery for hip fracture were randomly divided into two groups of 25 patients. For spinal anesthesia, Group 1 received 15 mg of 0.5% isobaric bupivacaine and Group 2 received 7.5 mg of the same solution. Hypotension was defined as SBP decrease > 30% of the pressure in nursing and would be dealt with ethylephrine bolus of 2 mg. Results: All patients showed satisfactory spinal anesthesia. With 15 mg four patients required one dose of ethylephrine and one patient required two doses to correct hypotension. In the group with 7.5 mg no patient developed hypotension. The lower dose reflected in significantly less cephalad spread, less motor block and shorter PACU stay. Conclusions: The dose of 7.5 mg of isobaric bupivacaine for spinal anesthesia provides sufficient level of analgesia for surgical correction of hip fractures in elderly patients, eliminating the need for the use of vasopressor. Background: Dental pain is one of the most common symptoms of untreated oral problems and exerts a strong impact on the well-being of children.Aims: The aim of this study was to evaluate the associated factors with dental pain in children aged 1-3 years using the Brazilian version of the Dental Discomfort Questionnaire (DDQ-B).Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in the city of Diamantina, Brazil. A total of 318 randomly selected children were submitted to an oral clinical examination for the evaluation of tooth injuries and dental caries (International Caries Detection and Assessment System, [ICDAS]). The caregivers of the children were asked to answer the DDQ-B as well as a questionnaire addressing demographic and socioeconomic aspects of the family. Statistical analysis was performed and involved the description of frequencies as well as Poisson hierarchical regression analysis. Results: Dental pain was associated with a household income less than the Brazilian minimum monthly wage (Prevalence ratios [PRs] = 1.33, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.07-1.66, P = 0.011) and dental caries in dentin - ICDAS codes 5 and 6 (PR = 1.48, 95% CI: 1.13-1.94, P = 0.004).Conclusions: Greater frequencies of dental pain were found in 1-3-year-old children from families with a low monthly income and dental caries with visible dentin with or without pulp involvement. Orientadora : Profª. Drª. Abstract: A film of alumina can protect industrial parts operating in oxidizing and carburizing environments. This film can be obtained by aluminization procedures. Processing parameters determine the final behavior, depending on the chemical composition of the substrate. For each alloy the impact of these parameters needs to be evaluated to better understand the behavior of the parts. The aim of this work was to determine the influence of chemical composition of the nickel-based superalloy and parameters of aluminization on subsequent formation of alpha alumina film. For this purpose, samples of commercial nickel-based superalloys (NI183 and NiCr2Nb) were aluminized using a two-step-process: thermochemical treatment in pack, under the temperature range of 850-1050°C and time range of 2-10h, in the presence of a reactive powder mixture (22%Al, 3%NH4Cl and Al2O3 in balance), followed by a pre-oxidation step at 1100°C for 1h. The evaluation of the aluminized surface included analyses of chemical composition, microstructure, formed phases and oxidation resistance. Results show that the chemical composition of the substrate influences the morphology and the thickness of the aluminized layer, as well as their phases and composition (as-coated microstructures) after the first step of the aluminization process carried out in pack. The effect of the microstructure and the alloying elements of the substrate, Cr, Mo, W and Ti, was related to the variation in thickness of the aluminized layer and the Al enrichment capacity. Therefore, a thinner and Al richer aluminized layer was obtained in the NI183 superalloy. It has been established that the growth of the aluminized layer thickness tends to a parabolic dependency on the time. On the other hand, the growth kinetics of the aluminized layer, as a function of the temperature, is more complex. After the pre-oxidation step, alpha alumina has been identified independently of substrate. However, for NiCr2Nb alloy, the complex set of oxides identified, particularly alumina and chromia, compromised the short-term isothermal oxidation at range of 700-1200oC. NI183 alloy allowed the development of a continuous alumina film, which was responsible for a stable behavior at test conditions. Keywords: Aluminization of Ni-based Alloys. Nickel Aluminides. Bolitophila nana (Macquart, 1826) Macrocera nana Macquart, 1826: 54 (original description). TYPE LOCALITY. — Northern France. TYPE WITH LABELS. — (1) Handwritten on white paper: “160”; (2) handwritten on white paper: “ France | Nord | Macquart”; (3) printed on red paper: “ TYPE ”; (4) handwritten on white paper: “ Macrocera | nana”. PRESERVATION. — Pinned exemplar, very damaged, with a wing and an undetermined leg glued on the paper rectangle. Missing parts: abdomen and one wing. REMARKS As pointed out by Bechev & Chandler (2011), Bolitophila nana is a nomem dubium, as the type of Macrocera nana is an unidentifiable Bolitophila species. According with these authors, the type is likely to be in Macquart’s collection in the Muséum d’Histoire naturelle de la ville de Lille (MHNL), Lille, France, but this has not been confirmed. The authors visited the MNHN collection and the type is allocated in this collection. Regarding to Bolitophilidae collection, the type of Bolitophila (Bolitophila) cinerea Meigen, 1818, should be allocated at MNHN. During the visit to the collection, the authors did not find the type so, as mentioned by Bechev & Chandler (2011), the type probably is lost. Moreover, there are specimens of B. (Bolitophila) austriaca (Mayer, 1950) and B. (Cliopisa) bispinosa Mayer, 1951 in the collection, but both the holotypes are deposited in the Naturhistorisches Museum, Vienna(NMW) (Bechev & Chandler 2011). The specimens from MNHN have red labels printed with the term “ allotype ”, determined by Matile (specifically for B. (Bolitophila) austriaca see Matile 1976). As additional namebearing type material can never be added after the original description and the term “ allotype ” just may be used to indicate a specimen of opposite sex to the holotype, no name-bearing function (ICZN 1999: 72A), these specimens were not considered here., Published as part of Falaschi, Rafaela Lopes & Oliveira, Sarah Siqueira, 2012, A catalogue of the types of Bolitophilidae and Ditomyiidae (Diptera, Bibionomorpha) in the collection of the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle, Paris, pp. 521-524 in Zoosystema 34 (3) on page 522, DOI: 10.5252/z2012n3a2, http://zenodo.org/record/5165676, {"references":["MACQUART J. 1826. The birth of a child with special needs is an unexpected event in the life of a family and all its members. While in the past all attention was centered mainly on the child and his /her disabilities, nowadays the family, especially the parents, are considered the main interveners and promoters of the child’s development process. The present internship, done at the Different and Special Association (Associação Diferentes e Especiais - ADE), situated in Vagos, allowed us to develop a case study whose main purpose was to acquire pertinent knowledge on the importance of support groups in the life of the families with children with special needs, to analize its typologies and dynamics, the motivations that lead the parents to these groups and the benefits taken from their participation. The case study, based on a qualitative methodology, included the observation of a support group session (non-participant observation), the application of questionnaires and the implementation of semi-structured interviews to the mothers of children with special needs. The obtained data enabled us to acknowledge and reflect upon the impact and effectiveness that the support groups have in the lives of these families. This report’s main purpose is to divulge all the research that was done during the internship. Most importantly, our goal has been to hear the “voice” of these families, identifying their perceptions, their needs, struggles and achievements. more...

Sternite 8 elongated, longer than wide, a deep notch almost dividing sclerite in two, long setae on digitiform projections distally. Tergite 8 well developed. Sternite 9 (vaginal furca) as long as sternite 8, sides of basal extension parallel. Tergite 10 short, sternite 10 not recognizable. Basal segment of cerci short, apical segment short, with apical digitiform projections bearing longer setae. Comments. N. laffooni has a single lighter area across the first section of Rs, base of M 1 + 2 and base of M 4, while the only other Neotropical species of the genus, N. conjuncta, has two light transverse areas across the wing. The gonostyli in N. laffooni are longer than in N. conjuncta, wider at the base and thinner at apex. The distal projections of the gonocoxites dorsal to the insertion of the gonostyli are shorter in N. laffooni, than in N. conjuncta. The head of the only female specimen of N. laffooni is missing, so it is not possible to confirm whether the eye-bridge in females of this species is complete, as in males., Published as part of Falaschi, Rafaela Lopes & Amorim, Dalton De Souza, 2009, Review of the Neotropical species of Nervijuncta Marshall, 1896 (Diptera, Ditomyiidae), pp. 18-30 in Zootaxa 2219 on pages 20-24, DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.190017, {"references":["Lane, J. 241. Revision and phylogenetic analysis of Melosymmerus Munroe (Diptera, Bibionomorpha, Ditomyiidae)

- Abstract
Ditomyiidae, included by some authors in the family Mycetophilidae s.l. as a subfamily, is a small clade of the infraorder Bibionomorpha, placed within the Mycetophiliformia. Mycetophiliformia is relatively well represented in the fossil record of the Jurassic (144 million years ago), while the oldest record of ditomids is from the Eocene (52 million years ago). According to recent topologies, the Ditomyiidae form a monophyletic group with Bolitophilidae, Diadocidiidae and Keroplatidae.Fifteen genera are now accepted for the family, with about 107 species described for the world, except for Afrotropical region. Among those genera, Melosymmerus Munroe has an exclusively neotropical distribution, which, together with Calosymmerus Munroe, is genera sister to Australosymmerus Freeman, which has circum-antarctic distribution. The above mentioned have Symmerus Walker as sister-group, of holartic distribution, composing the Symmerinae. This is quite characteristic of groups fragmented by the process of tectonics of plates, generating intercontinental disjunction by vicariance. The Ditomyiinae include the following genera: Ditomyia, Asioditomyia, Nervijuncta, Rhipidita and Calliceratomyia, with a similar distribution in the world. There are ten described species for Melosymmerus seven of Brazil, one of Ecuador and two of Mexico. Eight new species of Melosymmerus are described in this work for the Neotropical region, collected with Malaise traps along the Atlantic Forest. Brazilian species are redescribed, a key for species of the genus handled and a catalog organized. Specimens of M. bororo were identified from Salesópolis and Ribeirão Preto, in the state of São Paulo, as well as specimens of M. bisetosus, in the states of Paraná and Minas Gerais. In a phylogenetic analysis of the relationships among the species of the genus, a strict consensus of nine cladograms more parciomonious is obtained. In the literature, Melosymmerus is accepted to be sister of Calosymmerus. In this analysis, Melosymmerus appeared paraphyletic in relation to Calosymmerus, suggesting that Calosymmerus can be considered a subjective junior synonym of Melosymmerus. more...

General Medicine - Abstract

A new genus of Mythicomyiidae, Amydrostylus triadicophallus gen. nov. et sp. nov., is described from the Chaco of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. The type-series was collected by Malaise traps during the development of the SISBIOTA–Brasil project. Amydrostylus is closely related to the genus Acridophagus Evenhuis in the subfamily Psiloderoidinae, but it is distinguished by the minute apical stylus and the same length of br and bm cells. The species is described and illustrated in detail, including the male terminalia and female spermathecae. This is the first record of the subfamily Psiloderoidinae in South America. more...

We describe and illustrate a new species of biting midge belonging to the subgenus Forcipomyia (Microhelea), from the Estacao Biologica de Boraceia, Sao Paulo State, Brazil. The two female specimens examined were found biting on a female stick bug, Paraphasma paulense (Phasmida: Pseudophasmatidae), which was attracted to a light trap. more...

Background: The prevalence of hip fracture is increasing with the continued aging of the population. The aim of this study was to compare the results after implementing the project accelerated post-operative recovery after surgery femur in patients aged over 60 years. Methods: Patients were observed during two distinct periods: Before implantation and after the implementation of the project Acerto. Patients underwent spinal anesthesia with post-operative analgesia by lumbar plexus block. Data evaluation was carried out in four stages of the study in both groups: Before arrival to the operating room during surgery, post-anesthesia care unit and on the ward in the morning of day 1 post-operatively. Results: The project implementation significantly reduces the length of stay, the number of suspension of surgery, duration of fasting, the incidence of hunger and thirst and the reintroduction of oral feeding. Oral feeding 2-4 h before surgery with dextrinomaltose not attended with nausea and vomiting. All patients were able to discharge on day 1 post-operatively. Conclusions : The use of clinical measures of accelerating patient recovery decreased length of stay, the number of suspensions of surgery, the time of fasting, the time of oral food reintroduction, high earlier and faster return to family life, working as humanization of treatment to the elderly. more...
