Vegetative and reproductive characteristics, fruit yield, and biochemical compounds of six bitter melon cultivars (Iranshahr, Mestisa, No. 486, Local Japanese, Isfahan, and Ilocano) were evaluated under Karaj conditions in Iran. The phytochemical properties of the cultivars were evaluated using both shade-dried and freeze-dried samples at three fruit developmental stages (unripe, semi-ripe, and ripe). There were significant differences in the vegetative and reproductive characteristics among cultivars, where cv. No. 486 was superior to most vegetative attributes. The fruit yield of cultivars varied from 2.98-5.22 kg/plant. The number of days to male and female flower appearance ranged from 19.00-25.33 and from 25-33 days, respectively. The leaf charantin content was in the range of 4.83-11.08 μg/g. Fruit charantin content varied with developmental stage, drying method, and cultivar. The highest charantin content (13.84 ± 3.55 µg/g) was observed at the semi-ripe fruit stage, and it was much higher in the freeze-dried samples than the shade-dried samples. Cultivar No. 486 had the highest (15.43 ± 2.4 µg/g) charantin content, whereas the lowest charantin content (8.51 ± 1.15 µg/g) was recorded in cultivar cv. Local Japanese. The highest total phenol content (25.17 ± 2.27 mg GAE/g) was recorded in freeze-dried samples of ripe fruits of cv. No. 486, whereas the lowest phenol content was detected in the shade-dried samples of semi-ripe fruits of Isfahan. cv. Flavonoid content was higher with the shade-drying method, irrespective of cultivar. In conclusion, considering the fruit yield and active biological compounds in the studied cultivars, cv. No. 486 should be grown commercially because of its higher yield and production of other secondary metabolites.

A six-week-old infant presented in extremis and was diagnosed with dextro-transposition of the great arteries, intact ventricular septum, features of left ventricular deconditioning, and abnormal coronary arteries. Treatment with prostaglandin E1 and balloon atrial septostomy was insufficient, necessitating extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 was detected. The arterial switch operation was delayed by eight days because of COVID-19. Although stable on ECMO, the infant was treated with remdesivir. Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation was not required postoperatively with chest closure on day 2 and extubation on day 5.

2-C-Methyl-d-erythrol-4-phosphate (MEP) pathway in plant supplies isoprene building blocks for carotenoids and chlorophylls essential in photosynthesis as well as plant hormones such as gibberellin and abscisic acid. To assess the effect of overexpression of the terminal enzyme of the MEP pathway, 1-hydroxy-2-methyl-2-( E )-butenyl-4-diphosphate reductase (HDR), transgenic Nicotiana tabacum overexpressing class 2 HDR from Ginkgo biloba ( GbHDR 2) under the control of 35S promoter was constructed. Contents of chlorophylls a and b in transgenic tobacco were enhanced by 19 and 7%, respectively, compared to those of the wild type. The carotenoid level was also 18% higher than that in the control plant. As a result, photosynthetic rate of the transgenic tobacco was increased by up to 51%. Diterepenoid duvatrienediol content of transgenic tobacco was also elevated by at least sixfold. To explore the molecular basis of the enhanced isoprenoid accumulation, transcript levels of the key genes involved in the isoprenoid biosynthesis were measured. Transcript levels of geranylgeranyl diphosphate synthase ( GGPP ), kaurene synthase ( KS ), gibberellic acid 20 oxidase ( GA20ox ), and phytoene desaturase ( PD ) genes in the transgenic tobacco leaves were about twofold higher compared to the wild type. Depleting fossil fuels target plant weeds which have the potential to be converted into efficient biofuels. In this study, mimosa seeds were utilized as a substrate for bioethanol production. This investigation was divided into three parts: breaking dormancy of seeds, mimosa seeds germination, and bioethanol production from mimosa seeds. Seed dormancy breaking was initiated by seeds soaked in hot distilled water to analyze the sugar quantity. Sugar content was measured relevance with root length results. According to results, root length obtained revealed that at 0.5-1.0 cm for root size has the most sugar availability. It was revealed that the total sugar 548.21 g/L and reducing sugar has a concentration of 248.67 g/L. Therefore, the broken dormancy of seeds using hot water at 95 °C for 10 min with a root length of 0.5-1 cm was used for ethanol fermentation. Ethanol fermentation was done by free yeast cell and immobilized yeast by injecting yeast directly. The ethanol yield was measured on the 3rd day of every fermentation. Results showed that the free cell yeast during the 1st day of fermentation afforded an ethanol production of 57.574 g/L, while the yield for immobilized yeast was 60.714 g/L. Consequently, the ethanol yield on the 2nd day of fermentation from the directly injected immobilized yeast was 60.088 g/L. Results revealed that the immobilization of yeast cells in fermentation provided a higher probability for bioethanol yield and could be utilized as a baseline for future bioethanol production. Platycodon grandiflorum is a perennial plant that has been used for medicinal purposes. Specifically, it is widely used in Northern China and Korea for the treatment of various diseases. Terpenoids belong to a group called secondary metabolites and have attracted a wide range of interest. Here, we determined the expressed sequence tag (EST) library of the methyl jasmonate (MeJA)-treated hairy root of P. grandiflorum . In total, 5760 ESTs were obtained, but after deleting the vector sequences and removing poor-quality sequences, a total of 2536 ESTs were attained. Of these, 811 contigs and 1725 singletons were annotated. The data were further analyzed with a focus on the gene families of the terpenoid biosynthetic pathway (TBP). We identified and characterized four TBP genes; among these were three full-length cDNAs encoding PgHMGS , PgMK , and PgMVD , whereas PgHMGR had a partial sequence based on the EST library database. Phylogenetic analysis and a pairwise identity matrix showed that these identified genes were closely related to those of other higher plants. Moreover, the tertiary structure and multiple alignment analysis showed that several distinct conserved motifs were present. Quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction results revealed that TBP genes were constitutively expressed in all organs of P. grandiflorum , while the expression of transcript levels of these genes varied distinctly among the organs. Additionally, the total amount of platycosides was highly detected in the root, accumulating in concentrations 7.8 and 2.6 times higher than in the hairy root and stem, respectively, and 1.4 times higher than in the leaf and flower. The highest amount of total phytosterols was found to accumulate in the leaves at 9.3, 9.1, 1.8, and 1.6 times higher than that of the stem, root, hairy root, and flower, respectively. After the hairy root was exposed to the MeJA treatment, the transcript levels of PgHMGS , PgHMGR , PgMK , and PgMVD had significantly increased. The highest level of transcript accumulation occurred at 3 h after initial exposure for most of the genes. Utilized and waste jasmine flower contains a high portion of organic carbohydrate and other organic acids, making it a suitable substrate for bioethanol production. This study was designed to estimate the prospective of waste jasmine flower biomass applied with chemical (alkaline) and thermal pretreatment applied on samples through bioethanol production efficiencies. Therefore, pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis are directed to disrupt the complex cell wall layer and improve the accessibility towards polysaccharide fraction. Also, applying response surface methodology tools during fermentative bioethanol production to study the interactive effects of different bioprocess variables for higher bioethanol yield in batch small and large scale model is discussed. The immobilized yeast between jasmine found that jasmine sugar utilization was 50%. The jasmine flower's ethanol production was 6.54 g/L and after distillation of jasmine was 31.40 g/L at pH 4.5. Apart from perovskites, the development of different types of pyrochlore oxides is highly focused on various electrochemical applications in recent times. Based on this, we have synthesized pyrochlore-type praseodymium stannate nanoparticles (Pr 2 Sn 2 O 7 NPs) by using a coprecipitation method and further investigated by different analytical and spectroscopic techniques such as X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, field emission-scanning electron microscopy, high resolution-transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis. Followed by this, we have designed a unique and novel electrochemical sensor for nitrofurazone detection, by modifying the glassy carbon electrode (GCE) with the prepared Pr 2 Sn 2 O 7 NPs. For that, the electrochemical experiments were performed by using cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry techniques. The Pr 2 Sn 2 O 7 NPs modified GCE exhibits high sensitivity (2.11 μA μM -1 cm -2 ), selectivity, dynamic linear ranges (0.01-24 μM and 32-332 μM), and lower detection limit (4 nM). Furthermore, the Pr 2 Sn 2 O 7 NPs demonstrated promising real sample analysis with good recovery results in biological samples (human urine and blood serum) which showed better results than the noble metal catalysts. Based on these results, the present work gives clear evidence that the pyrochlore oxides are highly suitable electrode materials for performing outstanding catalytic activity toward electrochemical sensors.

This study aimed to elucidate the variations in primary and secondary metabolites during Lycoris radiata flower development using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and gas chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC-TOFMS). The result showed that seven carotenoids, seven phenolic acids, three anthocyanins, and galantamine were identified in the L . radiata flowers. Most secondary metabolite levels gradually decreased according to the flower developmental stages. A total of 51 metabolites, including amines, sugars, sugar intermediates, sugar alcohols, amino acids, organic acids, phenolic acids, and tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle intermediates, were identified and quantified using GC-TOFMS. Among the hydrophilic compounds, most amino acids increased during flower development; in contrast, TCA cycle intermediates and sugars decreased. In particular, glutamine, asparagine, glutamic acid, and aspartic acid, which represent the main inter- and intracellular nitrogen carriers, were positively correlated with the other amino acids and were negatively correlated with the TCA cycle intermediates. Furthermore, quantitation data of the 51 hydrophilic compounds were subjected to partial least-squares discriminant analyses (PLS-DA) to assess significant differences in the metabolites of L . radiata flowers from stages 1 to 4. Therefore, this study will serve as the foundation for a biochemical approach to understand both primary and secondary metabolism in L . radiata flower development.

Four lithium phosphine borohydride compounds featuring phenyl and naphthyl linkers have been synthesized. In-depth NMR analysis affords evidence for non-bonded through space P-B coupling. Reactivity towards CO2 leads to LiH transfer and to the quantitative formation of the corresponding ambiphilic phosphine-borane products.

Global climate change and the industrial revolution have increased the concentration of tropospheric ozone, a photochemical air pollutant that can negatively affect plant growth and crop production. In the present study, we investigated the effects of O 3 on the metabolites and transcripts of tartary buckwheat. A total of 36 metabolites were identified by gas chromatography coupled with time-of-flight mass spectrometry, and principal component analysis was performed to verify the metabolic differences between nontreated and O 3 -treated tartary buckwheat. The content of threonic acid increased after 2 days of the O 3 treatment, whereas it decreased after 4 days of exposure, after which it gradually increased until the eighth day of exposure. In addition, the levels of most metabolites decreased significantly after the O 3 treatment. On the contrary, the levels of two anthocyanins, cyanidin-3- O -glucoside and cyanidin-3- O -rutinoside, increased more than 11.36- and 11.43-fold, respectively, after the O 3 treatment. To assess the effect of O 3 on the genomic level, we analyzed the expression of anthocyanin biosynthesis pathway genes in O 3 -treated and nontreated buckwheat using quantitative real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (PCR). We found that the expression of all anthocyanin pathway genes increased significantly in the O 3 -treated buckwheat compared to that in the nontreated buckwheat. Altogether, our results suggested that O 3 affected the transcripts and metabolites of tartary buckwheat, which would eventually cause phenotypic changes in plants.

Plants are continuously exposed to abiotic and biotic factors that lead to wounding stress. Different plants exhibit diverse defense mechanisms through which various important metabolites are synthesized. Humans can exploit these mechanisms to improve the efficacy of existing drugs and to develop new ones. Most previous studies have focused on the effects of wounding stress on the different plant parts, such as leaves, stems, and roots. To date, however, no study has investigated the accumulation of primary and galantamine content following the exposure of a callus to wounding stress. Therefore, in the present study, we exposed Lycoris radiata calli to wounding stress and assessed the expression levels of several genes involved in metabolic pathways at various time points (0, 3, 6, 12, 24, 48, 72, and 96 h of exposure). Furthermore, we quantify the primary and galantamine content using gas chromatography-time-of-flight mass spectrometry and the high-performance liquid chromatography qRT-PCR analysis of eight galantamine pathway genes ( LrPAL-2 , LrPAL-3 , LrC4H-2 , LrC3H , LrTYDC2 , LrN4OMT , LrNNR , and LrCYP96T ) revealed that seven genes, except LrN4OMT , were significantly expressed following exposure to wounding stress. Galantamine contents of calli after 3, 6, 12, 24, 48, 72, and 96 h of exposure were respectively 2.5, 2.5, 3.5, 3.5, 5.0, 5.0, and 8.5 times higher than that after 0 h of exposure. Furthermore, a total of 48 hydrophilic metabolites were detected in the 0 h exposed callus and 96 h exposed callus using GC-TOFMS. In particular, a strong positive correlation between galantamine and initial precursors, such as phenylalanine and tyrosine, was observed.

Development of new metal boride with carbon composite is an emerging class of catalyst and it brings enormous curiosity in the material community because of their potential intriguing properties. Here, we describe a new type of amorphous cobalt boride (A-CoB) nanosheet anchored on the surface of functionalized carbon nanofiber (A-CoB/ƒ-CNF) by a simple method. The emerged A-CoB/ƒ-CNF composite was demonstrated to possess great bifunctional electrocatalytic activity for the electrochemical sensing of antibiotic drug nitrofurantoin (NFT) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The prepared A-CoB/ƒ-CNF composite was characterized by various analytical and spectroscopic techniques such as XRD, FE-SEM, HR-TEM, Raman, and XPS analysis. The result from the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy confirms that the A-CoB/ƒ-CNF composite shows high electrical conductivity and the number of electron transferability for the NFT sensor and OER which is due to the presence of abundant active sites/large surface area in A-CoB, and synergistic effect between the A-CoB and ƒ-CNF. As an electrochemical sensor, the A-CoB/ƒ-CNF modified electrode shows substantial sensitivity (3.13 μA μM -1  cm -2 ), wider linear response range (0.01- 527 μM), and lower detection limit (0.003 μM) as-compared to the previously reported noble and non-noble metal-based electrocatalyst for NFT sensor. As well, the A-CoB/ƒ-CNF composite demonstrates superior OER activity with low overpotential and small Tafel slope value of 0.35 V and 173 mV/dec, respectively, which shows advanced kinetics than noble metal catalysts. Ionic liquid (IL) demonstrates better performance as a solvent in the biomass conversion process than conventional organic solvents. This study focuses on the application of new hydrophobic imidazolium-based IL as a solvent in biomass conversion process. A novel IL, namely, 1,3-dipropyl-2-(2-propoxyphenyl)-4,5-diphenylimidazolium iodide ([DPDIm]I), was synthesized and subsequently used as a solvent for biomass conversion to produce levulinic acid (LA) and Formic Acid (FA). The performance of [DPDIm]I supported by H 2 SO 4 as a solvent was shown by cellulose conversion into 94.23% of LA and 18.85% of FA at the optimum conditions of 140 °C temperature and the reaction time of two hours. The synthesis and fabrication of oval-shaped tantalum carbide (Ta-C) integrated functionalized-multiwalled carbon nanotube (Ta-C/f-MWCNT) as an electrocatalyst for the electrochemical determination of nitrofurantoin (NFT) is described. The Ta-C/f-MWCNT composite was prepared using the soft-template method followed by the ultrasonication process. The as-prepared Ta-C/f-MWCNT composite was characterized using powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. The electrochemical properties of Ta-C/f-MWCNT were investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), cyclic voltammetry (CV), and linear sweep voltammetry (LSV). The Ta-C/f-MWCNT-modified glassy carbon electrode (Ta-C/f-MWCNT/GCE) was successfully utilized as an active electrocatalyst for the detection of NFT in the presence of 0.384 mM NFT containing 0.05 M phosphate buffer (pH 7) at a scan rate of 50 mV/s. The Ta-C/f-MWCNT/GCE exhibited a wide linear response range (0.04-1047 μM) and a low detection limit (0.0011 μM). Further, the Ta-C/f-MWCNT/GCE showed appreciable results for repeatability, reproducibility, and long-term cyclic stability towards NFT sensing. The Ta-C/f-MWCNT/GCE was applied to real sample analysis such as a commercial tablet and human urine samples. The Ta-C/f-MWCNT/GCE exhibited good recovery values for the tablet (105 to 115%) and urine (101-107%) samples. The above electrochemical results suggest that the Ta-C/f-MWCNT is a promising electrocatalyst for the electrochemical sensing of NFT drug. Graphical abstract .

Hydrolysis of lignocellulosic materials into simple sugar plays an important role in biorefinery. Hemicellulosic sugars from the hydrolysis of lignocellulosic materials could be used in xylitol production. However, xylanase activity during hydrolysis process is affected by activators and inhibitors that may present in the reaction system. The pretreatment process was reported to produce compounds that may affect the enzymatic hydrolysis process, such as furans, aliphatic acid, and aromatics. The purpose of this study was to investigate the inhibition effect of these potential inhibitors on xylanase activity. Three groups of potential inhibitors were evaluated including, furan, aliphatic acid, and hydrolysis-fermentation products. The result showed that ethanol, vanillin, and formic acid gave the highest inhibition effect from each group. Ethanol competed with xylanase competitively. Vanillin showed non-competitive inhibition. Formic acid performed mixed-inhibition by reducing maximum hydrolysis rate and giving varied Michaelis constant values at different concentrations., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Ltd. In this work, we developed cerium oxide/tin oxide (CeO 2 /SnO 2 ) nanocatalyst with the assistance of urea by a simple sonochemical method and utilized as an efficient electrode material for electrochemical sensing of anti-inflammatory drug 5-aminosalicylic acid (Mesalamine, MES). The CeO 2 /SnO 2 nanoparticles (NPs) were systematically characterized in terms of their crystal structure, morphologies, and physicochemical properties using XRD, Raman, FESEM, HR-TEM, EDX, mapping, and XPS analysis. The characterization results clearly confirmed that the prepared NPs was formed in the phase of CeO2/SnO2 without any other impurities. The electrochemical properties of CeO 2 /SnO 2 NPs were investigated by EIS, CV, and DPV techniques. The CeO 2 /SnO 2 NPs (9.6 μA) modified GCE demonstrated an excellent and improved electrocatalytic activity in terms of higher anodic peak current and lower peak potential when compared to bare GCE (6.7 μA) and CeO 2 NPs/GCE (8.2 μA) for the sensing of MES. The CeO 2 /SnO 2 NPs/GCE shows broader linear response range and lower detection limit of 0.02-1572 μM and 0.006 μM, respectively. Moreover, other potentially interfering compounds such as a similar functional group containing biological substances and inorganic species have no interference effect towards MES sensing. Citrus limon (L.) Osbeck cultivated all over the world is a valuable source of aromatic essential oil. To develop tetraploids of C. limon, four different concentration of colchicine (0.025, 0.05, 0.1 and 0.2%; w/v) and three varied exposure time (12, 24 and 48 h) were employed. The ploidy level of diploids (2n = 2x = 18) and tetraploids (2n = 4x = 36) were determined by direct chromosome count and confirmed by flow cytometric analyses. Successful result with maximum tetraploidy frequency was observed in plantlets developed from seeds treated with 0.025% colchicine for 24 h. Morphological and stomatal characteristics indicated that tetraploids were taller with increased leaf and root length. On the other side, the leaves of tetraploids had fewer and larger stomata with a greater number of chloroplasts in guard cells in contrast with diploids. GC-GC/MS analyses showed cyclic monoterpene, limonene had increased significantly in tetraploids and was further confirmed by HPLC quantification. RT-PCR analyses revealed unaltered expression of monoterpene synthase, sesquiterpene synthase and flavone synthase and remarkable upregulation of genes such as limonene synthase, chalcone synthase and phenylalanine ammonia lyase in tetraploids. Antioxidant activity of essential oil of tetraploids was higher than diploids in all the five test systems studied. Cytolytic activity against invading microorganisms is one of the innate forms of immunity in invertebrates. A serine protease-associated sialic acid-specific cytolytic lectin was purified using glutaraldehyde-fixed ox erythrocytes from the larval extract of blowfly (Chrysomya megacephala). The purified lectin lysed vertebrate erythrocytes with effective haemolysis of ox red blood cells (RBCs) in an isotonic medium. The degree of haemolytic (HL) activity of the purified cytolytic lectin depended on its concentration, pH, temperature, and calcium ions. It was sensitive to ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid. The native molecular mass of the C-type lectin was 260 ± 26 kDa, comprising four different polypeptide subunits of 75 kDa (pI ~8), 69 kDa (pI ~7.0), 61 kDa (pI ~5.3), and 55 kDa (pI ~4.6). The association between the C-type lectin and serine protease was confirmed by MALDI-TOF-MS analysis that revealed its homology in the same spectral peak as well as the proteases and phenylmethylsulphonyl fluoride inhibition of HL activity. Haemolysis inhibition by N-acetylneuraminic acid and other sugars revealed the properties of the lectin. The purified lectin distorted the integrity of ox RBCs and Paenalcaligenes hermetiae. This study investigated the potential of a new material, so-called small-flowered nutsedge, for bioethanol production. This plant causes the huge loss of rice yield as it competes nutrients, sunlight and other necessary elements with rice plant to grow. The project plans to transform its biomass into valuable product and bring profitable for famers. The powered raw sample was treated with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) as followed the design experiment. The use of response surface method is helping researcher to save time and effort but still gain meaningful predicted value that closed to the actual value. Microalgae are capable of tolerating variations in water temperature and sudden exposures to toxic substances, and cellular heat shock proteins (HSPs) help to protect cells from such stress. Here, we determined the complete open reading frames (ORF) of small TsHSP20 and large TsHSP70 and 100 in the chlorophyte Tetraselmis suecica, and examined the expression levels of these genes after exposure to thermal stressors, redox-active metals, and non-redox-active metals. Putative TsHSP20, TsHSP70, and TsHSP100 proteins had conserved HSP-family motifs with different C-terminus motifs. Phylogenetic analyses of individual HSPs showed that T. suecica clustered well with other chlorophytes. Real-time PCR analysis showed that thermal stress did not significantly change the expression of all the tested TsHSPs. In addition, TsHSP20 showed little gene expression after being exposed to copper, whereas TsHSP70 and 100 genes greatly responded to the redox-active metals in CuSO 4 followed by CuCl 2 , but not to the non-redox active metals. Redox-active metals strongly affected the physiology of the cells, as judged by cell counting, reactive oxygen species imaging and photosynthetic efficiency. These findings suggest that small and large HSPs are differentially involved in the response against environmental stressors. Background: Most post-colonoscopy interval colorectal cancers are proximal; serrated polyps are often precursors to these cancers and are considered difficult to detect. We assessed the safety, feasibility, and economic effect of chromocolonoscopy on detection of proximal serrated neoplasia., Methods: We did an open-label, multicentre, randomised, controlled non-inferiority trial including patients from Bowel Screening Wales centres. Participants who tested positive for faecal occult blood and who were eligible for and considered fit to have colonoscopy (patients with known cases of polyposis syndromes, Lynch syndrome, and chronic inflammatory disease were excluded) were randomly assigned (1:1; with the use of minimisation, stratified by centre with an 80:20 random element) to either standard white light colonoscopy (standard group) or chromocolonoscopy (indigo carmine dye [0·2%]; chromocolonoscopy group) using a secure, internet-based, computerised, randomisation system that used centralised, dynamic allocation. Participants were followed up for 1 year and data from index colonoscopies and associated clearance procedures were analysed. All proximal polyps were reviewed by an expert pathologist panel. The main outcome on which power was based was time taken to perform the colonoscopy procedure, defined as from the time when the scope was inserted to withdrawal from the anus, assessed in the per-protocol population. The non-inferiority margin was 15 min. This trial is complete and is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT01972451., Findings: Between Nov 20, 2014, and June 16, 2016, 741 (72%) of 1031 patients screened were eligible and consented: 360 were randomly assigned to white light colonoscopy and 381 to chromocolonoscopy. In the chromocolonoscopy group, the procedure took a mean of 36·8 min (SD 15·0), compared with a mean of 30·6 min (13·7) in the standard group (mean difference 6·3 min [95% CI 4·2-8·4] longer with chromocolonoscopy than in the standard group). The mean difference was within the prespecified non-inferiority margin. Detection rates for proximal serrated lesions were significantly higher in the chromocolonoscopy group than in the control group (45 [12%] of 381 patients vs 23 [6%] of 360 patients; odds ratio 1·96 [95% CI 1·16-3·32]; p=0·012). Serious adverse events (four cases of postpolypectomy bleeding [two in each group], and one case of anxiety and hyperventilation [in the chromocolonoscopy group]), colonoscopy quality measures, comfort scores, and sedation were similar between groups., Interpretation: Chromocolonoscopy is feasible within a population-based colorectal cancer screening programme, is safe, and has significantly increased detection of proximal serrated neoplasia and other polyp types compared with standard colonoscopy. Microalgae are one of the important components in food chains of aquatic ecosystems and have been used for human consumption as food and as medicines. The wide diversity of compounds synthesized from different metabolic pathways of fresh and marine water algae provide promising sources of fatty acids, steroids, carotenoids, polysaccharides, lectins, mycosporine-like amino acids, halogenated compounds, polyketides, toxins, agar agar, alginic acid and carrageenan. This review discusses microalgae used to produce biological substances and its economic importance in food science, the pharmaceutical industry and public health.

Two dimensional (2D) titanium carbide (Ti-C) is an analogues of graphene have tremendous attention in recent years due to their high electrical conductivity and catalytic activity. Herein, we have synthesized Ti-C micro particles based on the template-assisted method and subsequently integrated with oxidized carbon nanofiber (f-CNF) through ultrasonication technique. The prepared Ti-C/f-CNF composite was subjected to various structural and morphological characterization techniques including the X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The all followed studies confirmed the formation and crystalline nature of prepared Ti-C/f-CNF nanocomposite. Further, the proposed Ti-C/f-CNF composite modified electrode was successfully applied as an electrocatalyst for the electrochemical detection of diphenylamine (DPA) in food. DPA is known as an anti-scald agent used to post harvest treatment of fruits. However, the higher concentration of DPA causes some hazardous side effects to human. Thus, the detection of DPA is an important concern in healthcare research. Eventually, the proposed Ti-C/f-CNF/SPCE exhibited ultra-low detection limit of (0.003 μM) with a linear range of 0.04-56.82 μM towards the detection of DPA. Moreover, the practicability of the proposed sensor was tested by real sample analysis by using fresh apple extract. Remarkably, the proposed sensor showed an excellent recovery range from 106.8% to 108% for the detection of DPA in spiked apple extract. The green microalga, Tetraselmis suecica, is commonly used in scientific, industrial, and aquacultural purposes because of its high stress tolerance and ease of culture in wide spectrums of environments. We hypothesized that carotenoids help to protect Tetraselmis cells from environmental stress by regulating genes in biosynthetic pathways. Here, we determined three major carotenogenic genes, phytoene synthase (PSY), phytoene desaturase (PDS), and β-lycopene cyclase (LCY-B) in T. suecica, and examined the physiological parameters and gene expression responses when exposed to redox-active metals and non-redox-active metals. Phylogenetic analyses of each gene indicated that T. suecica clustered well with other green algae. Real-time PCR analysis showed that TsPSY, TsPDS, and TsLCY-B genes greatly responded to the redox-active metals in CuSO 4 followed by CuCl 2 , but not to the non-redox-active metals. The redox-active metals strongly affected the physiology of the cells, as determined by cell counting, reactive oxygen species (ROS) imaging, and photosynthetic efficiency. This suggests that carotenoids protect the cells from oxidative damage caused by metals, thereby contributing to cell survival under various stress conditions.

Background: Colorectal lesions are generally evaluated during the withdrawal phase of colonoscopy. Minimising the risk of missed lesions is crucial to determine an appropriate future surveillance colonoscopy interval., Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the clinical significance of detecting sigmoid colon lesions during the insertion phase., Methods: This retrospective study included 172 consecutive patients undergoing colonoscopy between October 2017 and April 2018. The total number of detected polyps, mean polyps per procedure, mean polyps per positive procedure, and histological and clinical characteristics of detected lesions were recorded. The primary endpoint was the difference in sigmoid colon polyp detection rates during insertion and withdrawal., Results: A total of 172 colonoscopies were performed for each patient and 322 lesions were detected. Sixty-two (19%) polyps were detected during insertion, 312 (97%) during withdrawal, and 52 (16%) during both insertion and withdrawal. Although all polyps except for those in the sigmoid colon could be detected during withdrawal, 10 of 87 (11%) polyps in the sigmoid colon could only be detected during insertion., Conclusions: In this study, attempts to detect polyps, even in the insertion phase, showed the clinical significance to decrease the risk of missed adenomatous polyps in the sigmoid colon.

Background and study aims  Video-colonoscopy, despite being the gold-standard for diagnosis of colorectal lesions, has limitations including patient discomfort and risk of complications. This study assessed training characteristics and acceptability in operators of a new robotic colonoscope (RC). Materials and methods  Participants (n = 9) with varying degrees of skill and background knowledge in colonoscopy performed colonoscopies with a RC on a simulation-based training model. Quantitative procedure-related and qualitative operator-related parameters were recorded. Results  Polyp detection rate was highest in the novice group (91.67 %) followed by experts (86.11 %), then equally, trainees and video gamers (79.17 %). Four participants repeated the procedure at a follow-up session. Each participant improved cecal intubation time and had the same or higher polyp detection rate. The potential role for RC was identified for an out-of-hospital environment and as a novel diagnostic tool. Conclusions  Results from this pilot suggest that operators at all skill levels found the RC acceptable and potentially useful as a diagnostic tool. Acquisition of skills with RC seems to improve rapidly to a clinically relevant level with simulation-based training.

Leucinodes orbonalis is a destructive pest found throughout eggplant cultivating fields of Tamil Nadu, India. The genetic diversity and its population structure were investigated in this pest using mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene sequences from 20 populations of L. orbonalis collected from various agro-climatic conditions. The study indicated almost no genetic diversity among various populations. The COI nucleotide sequence based haplotype analysis also revealed no significant genetic variation among various populations. However, haplotype network analysis with three clades was nearly matching with the structure of phylogenetic analysis that showed geographical separations induced distribution of some genetic variation. The PCA and nMDS Shephard's plot analyses were also illustrated that the populations sampled were nearly matched with phylogenetic tree and haplotype network. This study on phylogeographical structure using the mitochondrial COI sequence diversity of L. orbonalis therefore suggested presence of few genetically distinct populations due to some specific habitat requirements.

A new class of core-shell metallic nanostructures with tunable near-surface composition and surface morphology with excellent catalytic activity is reported. Very thin shells of metal nanoassemblies such as monolayer (Ag and Au), bilayer of Ag or Au, and AgAu alloy layer with controlled size and morphology were deposited onto a gold nanocube (AuNC) core. UV-vis absorption spectroscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy analyses along with selected-area electron diffraction, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer, and X-ray diffraction techniques were used to characterize the prepared core-shell nanocubes. High-angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy mapping images were recorded for the bilayer shell and alloy layer shell in the core-shell nanostructures. Reduction of 4-nitroaniline in the presence of sodium borohydride was chosen to validate the catalytic activity of the prepared core-shell metal nanocubes. Interestingly, the AgAu alloy shell layer over the AuNC (AuNC 1 @Ag 0.25 Au 0.25 ) showed excellent catalytic activity compared with the pristine AuNC and monolayer and bilayer core-shell nanostructures.

Background: To assess the reversal of discolouration caused by Ledermix using various bleaching agents., Material and Methods: Twenty six extracted human mandibular premolars were taken and divided into four groups. Six teeth were divided into three each which are taken as positive and negative controls. The remaining twenty are divided into two groups (n=10). After conventional access preparation, the Ledermix paste was sealed in the pulp chamber for twelve weeks. The paste was removed by a rinse with sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl). Then the pulp chamber was sealed with a mixture of Sodium perborate and distilled water for group 1 and group 2 was sealed with Sodium tetraborate for 1 to 12 weeks. The shade was measured by a Spectrophotometer at four time periods baseline(T0), after 12 weeks of placement of Ledermix (T1), after 4 (T2), 12 (T3) weeks of Internal bleaching with Sodium perborate and Sodium tetraborate respectively. Data were collected based on CIE-76 (L*a*b*) system and analysed using t-test and ANOVA., Results: A significant decrease in the mean value of L*(lightness) was observed after treatment with Ledermix (T1, p <0.05). Considerable increase in these values after bleaching with Sodium perborate and Sodium tetraborate (T2, T3) were found in both groups, to the same extent., Conclusions: Ledermix discoloured the tooth structure but discolouration could be reversed when bleached with both Sodium perborate and Sodium tetraborate to the same extent. Hesperidin, a flavanoglycone abundantly present in citrus fruits, is reported to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective properties. Previous reports from our laboratory indicated the neuroprotective effect of hesperidin against aluminum chloride (AlCl 3 )-induced memory loss, acetylcholine esterase hyperactivity, oxidative stress, and enhanced expression of amyloid β protein biosynthesis-related markers. However, their role on AlCl 3 -induced inflammation, caspase activation, Tau pathology, altered Akt/GSK 3β signaling pathway, and Aβ clearance marker has not yet been fully elucidated. Intraperitonial injection of AlCl 3 (100 mg/kg body weight) for 60 days significantly elevated the expressions of insulin-degrading enzyme (IDE), cyclin-dependent kinase 5 (CDK 5), and phosphoTau (pTau); inflammatory markers such as glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), ionized calcium-binding adapter molecule 1 (Iba-1), NF-kB, cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-4, IL-6, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS); and apoptotic markers including cytosolic cytochrome c (cyto c), caspase-3, caspase-8, and caspase-9, and lowered expressions of mitochondrial cyto c, phospho-Akt (pAkt) and phospho-glycogen synthase kinase-3β (pGSK-3β) in the hippocampus and cortex. Co-administration of hesperidin to AlCl 3 rats for 60 days significantly ameliorated the aluminum-induced pathological changes. The behavioral studies also supported the above findings. Our results imply that treatment with hesperidin might be a potent option for treating the symptoms of cognitive impairment in Alzheimer's disease by targeting its most prominent hallmarks.

The electronic conductivity and electrocatalytic activity of metal chalcogenides are normally enhanced by following the ideal strategies such as substitution/doping of heterogeneous atoms and hybridization of highly conductive carbon supportive materials. Here, a rare earth element (samarium) was substituted with MoSe 2 using the simple hydrothermal method. The lattice distortion due to the substitution of Sm 3+ with MoSe 2 was clearly observed by using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy analysis. As a consequence, the prepared SmMoSe 2 nanorod was encapsulated with graphene oxide (GO) sheets by using ultrasonication process. Furthermore, the GO-encapsulated SmMoSe 2 nanocomposite modified glassy carbon electrode (GO@SmMoSe 2 /GCE) was used for the sensing of chloramphenicol. The results showed that the GO@SmMoSe 2 /GCE revealed the superior electrocatalytic activity with low detection (5 nM) and sensitivity (20.6 μA μM -1 cm -2 ) to electrochemical detection of proposed analyte. It indicates that the substitution of Sm 3+ and encapsulation of GO significantly increased both the electrical conductivity and electrocatalytic activity of MoSe 2 .

Insects sustain the invading bacterial pathogens by inducing the production of lectin which participates in surveillance of non-self molecules. The antibacterial property of lectin is an inevitable aspect of innate immune system especially for the insects feeding the detritus organic matter. β-galactoside binding lectin possessing antibacterial property was detected and purified from the hemolymph of larvae of caddisfly, Stenopsyche kodaikanalensis using affinity chromatography. The purified lectin exhibited highest hemagglutination titer value against buffalo erythrocytes and has affinity to lactose and fetuin which contains β-galactoside linkages. It was found to be calcium independent, EDTA insensitive and heat labile. These reveal the characteristics features of S-Lac lectin. The molecular weight of lectin was 360 kDa with five distinct subunits such as 95, 90, 66, 62 and 47 kDa. The sequences acquired through MALDI-TOF-MS analysis shared homologies to the putative conserved region of leguminous lectin. Antibacterial studies were carried out with native soil bacterial isolates. We report the use of video-assisted cardioscopy (VAC) to assess the complete resection of a giant sessile rhabdomyoma of the left ventricle (LV) in a case of suspected neonatal tuberous sclerosis. A fetal echocardiogram performed at 20 weeks of gestation identified the mass at the apex of the LV and attached to the interventricular septum (IVS). Further echocardiography during the pregnancy demonstrated moderate growth of the LV mass. This was occupying more than two-thirds of the LV cavity after the delivery, and there were concerns of LV outflow tract obstruction. The 4-kg newborn underwent LV tumor excision via a left atrial approach at the age of 12 days. The mitral valve (MV) apparatus and the IVS had strong attachments to the mass. The tumor was successfully resected. In view of the invasiveness of the tumor, a decision was taken to perform an intracardiac assessment using a VAC to detect any iatrogenic complication. A Karl Storz Neuro Endoscope probe 4 mm in diameter and 14 mm in length with an angulation of 0° was passed into the left ventricular cavity through the MV with the aim to detect residual tumor and to identify any iatrogenic complications due to the extensive resection. Video-assisted cardioscopy allows visualization of inaccessible intraventricular structures avoiding ventriculotomy, which can cause ventricular dysfunction, arrhythmias, and aneurysm formation. The VAC was shown to be very useful in this situation, and the process can easily be repeated as required.

A new type of manganese diselenide nanoparticles (MnSeNPs) was synthesized by using a hydrothermal method. Their surface morphology, crystallinity and elemental distribution were characterized by using transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy which scrutinize the formation of the NPs. The NPs were coated on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry were applied to study the electroanalytical properties towards the oxidation of the food additive capsaicin. The modified GCE displays lower charge transfer resistance (R ct  = 29.52 Ω), a larger active surface area (0.089 cm 2 /g, and more efficient electrochemical oxidation of capsaicin compared to a MnS 2 /GCE and a bare GCE. The oxidation peak potential is 0.43 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) which is lower than that of previously reported GCEs. The sensor has a detection limit as low as 0.05 μM and an electrochemical sensitivity of 2.41 μA μM -1  cm -2 . The method was applied to the determination of capsaicin in pepper samples. Biomass from wetland aquatic grass and buffalo grass can be exploited for biogas production, because this substrate is plenteous and does not compete with food production. In this study, the grass substrate was physically pretreated by boiling with different retention time to increase its biodegradability and was examined in batch mode. Boiling pretreatment suggested that 100 °C with 2 h retention time was the best condition. The results showed that the optimum grass concentration in the 1:1 ratio of co-digestion mixture with manure produced the highest methane yield. The results suggested that co-digestion of buffalo grass and buffalo dung was a promising approach for improving biogas production. This study was achieved the upgraded biogas through biological purification contained 90.42% CH 4 8.04% CO 2 1.43% O 2 and 0.11% other trace gases-a remarkable performance based on an efficiency criteria. Introduction: A functionally single cardiac ventricle seen on foetal ultrasound scan carries a guarded prognosis. The antenatal diagnosis of anomalous pulmonary venous connection (APVC) remains challenging, if there is no associated structural cardiac abnormality. Antenatally, a combination of complex cardiac anomaly with suspected isomerism should raise the possibility of associated total anomalous pulmonary venous connection (TAPVC). There needs to be a high index of suspicion for TAPVC, in functional single ventricle and suspected isomerism, as this carries a very grim outcome postnatally. We illustrate foetal echocardiographic findings of suspected TAPVC and review outcomes of antenatal versus postnatal diagnosis of TAPVC with functional single ventricle., Methods: We retrospectively reviewed our database over 13 years, focusing on foetal cardiac diagnosis, pregnancy outcomes, management and outcomes of livebirths with diagnosis of TAPVC with functional single ventricle., Results: Thirteen patients were included in the review. For the nine antenatal patients, three pregnancies were terminated and six babies were born alive (four babies had compassionate care, two babies had cardiac surgery). One baby is alive at 8.5 years, after Fontan surgery. For the four postnatal patients, three babies had compassionate care (one alive at age 8.1 years) and one baby had cardiac surgery (died age nine weeks). Ten of the 13 patients have right atrial isomerism. Of these 10 patients, only two are alive. For the three non-isomeric babies, only one baby is still alive. There is heterogeneity of the type of TAPVC diagnosed with no particular group that offered better survival., Conclusion: Antenatal diagnosis of TAPVC, even in the context of functional single ventricle remains challenging. If isomerism is suspected, targeted evaluation of pulmonary venous connection should be done. This combination of cardiac lesion carries a very grim outcome. The ability to make this diagnosis antenatally will add to the information and counselling given to these parents.

Biogas production from anaerobic co-digestion of fallen teak leaves ( Tectona grandis ) and microalgae ( Chlorella vulgaris ) were investigated. In this study, teak leaves and algae mixtures with or without pretreatment were used as the substrates and digested in 1-L of anaerobic fermenter, then optimal conditions were performed in 6-L fermenter. Pretreatment was performed using sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution (w/v) at different conditions (0, 2, 3 and 4%), with different total solid (TS) ratios (10, 15 and 20%). The digesters were placed in an incubator at 34-36 °C for 45 days. The results showed that the co-digestion of pretreated (10% TS with 2% NaOH) of teak leaves and algae was significantly higher in terms of biodegradability of TS, VS, COD along with biogas yield, methane potential and highest yield was achieved 71.90% than those obtained by mono-digestion. Carotenoids are natural pigments that play pivotal roles in many physiological functions. The characteristics of carotenoids, their effects on health, and the cosmetic benefits of their usage have been under investigation for a long time; however, most reviews on this subject focus on carotenoids obtained from several microalgae, vegetables, fruits, and higher plants. Recently, microalgae have received much attention due to their abilities in producing novel bioactive metabolites, including a wide range of different carotenoids that can provide for health and cosmetic benefits. The main objectives of this review are to provide an updated view of recent work on the health and cosmetic benefits associated with carotenoid use, as well as to provide a list of microalgae that produce different types of carotenoids. Background: Genus Isodon (Lamiaceae) is a prolific source for bioactive terpenoids. Nowadays, people move towards natural products because of undesirable effects of chemotherapeutic drugs., Objective: In silico and in vitro approaches were attempted to screen bioactive terpenoids isolated from Isodon wightii with acetylcholinesterase and histone deacetylase3 receptors., Methods: Terpenoids such as abietic acid, oleanolic acid, α-amyrin acetate, β-amyrin acetate were docked with AchE and HDAC3 receptors using AutoDock Vina (version 1.1.2). Further, GROMACS 5.1.2 package was used to perform molecular dynamic simulation. In vitro apoptosis was tested using hoechst 33258 and acridine orange/ethidium bromide., Results: Ligplot analysis indicated that abietic acid had strong binding efficiency with AchE and HDAC3 receptors forming one and four hydrogen bonds respectively. Root mean square deviation analysis showed AchE-abietic acid and HDAC3-abietic acid complexes with high deviation which later attains equilibrium around ~25000ps and ~10000ps respectively. Root mean square fluctuation study showed that the complexes have high fluctuations indicates the high flexibility of residues. Solvent accessible surface area revealed the favourable interacting region of AchE and HDAC3 receptors with abietic acid in the range of ~215nm2 to ~235nm2 and ~157nm2 to ~175nm2 respectively. Apoptosis inducing the activity of abietic acid was tested against HeLa cells. Hoechst 33258 staining showed increased apoptosis by abietic acid in a concentration-dependent manner. Gooseweed (Sphenoclea zeylanica Gaertn.) is a pest on the rice field that has a potential to be a promising substrate for bioethanol production. Dry powdered gooseweed was firstly pretreated with 1% NaOH, following 1% H 2 O 2 at variety conditions. The hydrolysis process was set at 50°C for 24-72h with enzyme cellulase (β-glucosidase) while the fermentation process was carried using Saccharomyces cerevisiae TISTR 5020 at 33°C for nine days. The ethanol concentration was recorded for three, five, seven, and nine days using an ebulliometer. The results showed that the treatment with only 1% NaOH for 24h has the highest sugar performance. In regard with hydrolysis, the optimum retention time was at 24h. Lastly, the highest ethanol concentration was achieved at 11.84g/L after five days and a rapid decreasing after seven to nine days was also observed., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Objectives: This study aimed to report our national experience with transcatheter patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) occlusion in infants weighing <6 kg., Background: The technique of transcatheter PDA closure has evolved in the past two decades and is increasingly used in smaller patients but data on safety and efficacy are limited., Methods: Patients weighing < 6 kg in whom transcatheter PDA occlusion was attempted in 13 tertiary paediatric cardiology units in the United Kingdom and Ireland were retrospectively analyzed to review the outcome and complications., Results: A total of 408 patients underwent attempted transcatheter PDA closure between January 2004 and December 2014. The mean weight at catheterization was 4.9 ± 1.0 kg and mean age was 5.7 ± 3.0 months. Successful device implantation was achieved in 374 (92%) patients without major complication and of these, complete occlusion was achieved in 356 (95%) patients at last available follow-up. Device embolization occurred in 20 cases (5%). The incidence of device related obstruction to the left pulmonary artery or aorta and access related peripheral vascular injury were low. There were no deaths related to the procedure., Conclusions: Transcatheter closure of PDA can be accomplished in selected infants weighing <6 kg despite the manufacturer's recommended weight limit of 6 kg for most ductal occluders. The embolization rate is higher than previously reported in larger patients. Retrievability of the occluder and duct morphology needs careful consideration before deciding whether surgical ligation or transcatheter therapy is the better treatment option., (© 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

To evaluate the potential of algal biotechnology to replace traditional agriculture in northeastern Thailand, an open raceway cultivation system was developed to produce biomass and beta-carotene. Dunaliella salina KU 11 isolated from local saline soil was cultured in open raceway tanks using brine and saline lake water. Grown in modified Johnson's medium (with 2-3.5 M NaCl), the algae reached a maximum cell density on the fourth day (1.8 × 10 6 cells mL -1 ). Increasing KNO 3 and NaHCO 3 from 0.5 and 0.043 g L -1 to 1 and 2.1 g L -1 , respectively, significantly improved the yields of biomass (0.33 g L -1 ) and beta-carotene (19 mg L -1 ). Expected profits for algal production were evaluated, and it was found that this strain was suitable for outdoor cultivation and the developing algal industry in northeastern Thailand could produce high economic benefits (at least $64,120 per year per 0.16 ha)., (© 2016 International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Inc.)

Objectives: To determine the hemodynamic effect of tracheal suction method in the first 36 hours after high-risk infant heart surgery on the PICU and to compare open and closed suctioning techniques., Design: Pilot randomized crossover study., Setting: Single PICU in United Kingdom., Participants: Infants undergoing surgical palliation with Norwood Sano, modified Blalock-Taussig shunt, or pulmonary artery banding in the first 36 hours postoperatively., Interventions: Infants were randomized to receive open or closed (in-line) tracheal suctioning either for their first or second study tracheal suction in the first 36 hours postoperatively., Measurements and Main Results: Twenty-four infants were enrolled over 18 months, 11 after modified Blalock-Taussig shunt, seven after Norwood Sano, and six after pulmonary artery banding. Thirteen patients received the open suction method first followed by the closed suction method second, and 11 patients received the closed suction method first followed by the open suction method second in the first 36 hours after their surgery. There were statistically significant larger changes in heart rate (p = 0.002), systolic blood pressure (p = 0.022), diastolic blood pressure (p = 0.009), mean blood pressure (p = 0.007), and arterial saturation (p = 0.040) using the open suction method, compared with closed suctioning, although none were clinically significant (defined as requiring any intervention)., Conclusions: There were no clinically significant differences between closed and open tracheal suction methods; however, there were statistically significant greater changes in some hemodynamic variables with open tracheal suctioning, suggesting that closed technique may be safer in children with more precarious physiology.

Lectins also identified as hemagglutinins are multivalent proteins and on account of their fine sugar-binding specificity play an important role in immune system of invertebrates. The present study was carried out on the hemolymph lectin of cockroach, Periplaneta americana with appropriate screening and purification to understand its molecular as well as functional nature. The lectin from the hemolymph was purified using ion-exchange chromatography. The approximate molecular weight of purified lectin was 340 kDa as determined by FPLC analysis. Rabbit erythrocytes were highly agglutinated with purified lectin from the hemolymph of P. americana. The hemagglutination activity (HA) of lectin was specifically inhibited by fucose. Glycoproteins also inhibited the HA activity of lectin. The amino acid sequences of the purified lectin revealed homology with amino acid sequences of allergen proteins from P. americana. Purified lectin showed the highest phenoloxidase activity against dopamine. The activators such as exogenous proteases and LPS from Escherichia coli and Salmonella minnesota significantly enhanced the PO activity of the purified lectin. Besides, the presence of copper and hemocyanin conserved domain in the purified lectin provided a new facet that insects belonging to the ancient clade such as cockroaches retained some traces of evolutionary resemblance in possessing lectin of ancient origin., (© 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

Napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum), represents an interesting substrate for biogas production. The research project evaluated biogas potential production from dry anaerobic digestion of Napier grass using batch experiment. To enhance the biogas production from ensiled Napier grass, thermal and alkaline pre-treatments were performed in batch mode. Alkali hydrolysis of Napier grass was performed prior to batch dry anaerobic digestion at three different mild concentrations of sodium hydroxide (NaOH). The study results confirmed that NaOH pretreated sample produced high yield of biogas than untreated (raw) and hot water pretreated samples. Napier grass was used as the mono-substrate. The biogas composition of carbon dioxide (30.10%), methane (63.50%) and 5 ppm of H 2 S was estimated from the biogas. Therefore, fast-growing, high-yielding and organic matter-enriched of Napier grass was promising energy crop for biogas production.

One of the key issues pertaining to the control of memory is to respond to a consistently changing environment or microbial niche present in it. Human cyclic AMP response element binding protein (CREB) transcription factor which plays a crucial role in memory has a homolog in C. elegans, crh-1. crh-1 appears to influence memory processes to certain extent by habituation of the host to a particular environment. The discrimination between the pathogen and a non-pathogen is essential for C. elegans in a microbial niche which determines its survival. Training the nematodes in the presence of a virulent pathogen (S. aureus) and an opportunistic pathogen (P. mirabilis) separately exhibits a different behavioural paradigm. This appears to be dependent on the CREB transcription factor. Here we show that C. elegans homolog crh-1 helps in memory response for a short term against the interacting pathogens. Following conditioning of the nematodes to S. aureus and P. mirabilis, the wild type nematodes exhibited a positive response towards the respective pathogens which diminished slowly after 2h. By contrast, the crh-1 deficient nematodes had a defective memory post conditioning. The molecular data reinforces the importance of crh-1 gene in retaining the memory of nematode. Our results also suggest that involvement of neurotransmitters play a crucial role in modulating the memory of the nematode with the assistance of CREB. Background: Ziziphus oenoplia Mill. is an ethnomedicinal plant and its fruit has been traditionally used by Puliar tribes of Anamalai Hills, Tamil Nadu, India to treat various ailments. Phytochemical analysis, antioxidant, cytotoxic and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) gene downregulation activities of Z. oenoplia fruit (ZOF) were studied., Methods: To explore bioactive compounds present in the ripened fruits, high-performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC) and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis were done. Free radical scavenging, hepatoprotective, inhibition of iNOS gene expression and cytotoxic activities of ethanol extract of fruit were also studied., Results: Total flavonoid content of ZOFwas estimated as 69 µg/mg catechin equivalent. HPTLC densitogram confirmed the presence of quercetin and GC-MS analysis showed a total of 16 compounds of 87.66 % with quinic acid as a major compound which accounted for 22.29 %. Free radical-scavenging activity of ethanolic fruit extract was ranged from 160.12 to 650.23 µg/mL. An amount of 1.5 µg lipopolysaccharide (LPS)- induced severe inflammation in BALB/c mice liver, followed by treatment with ethanolic fruit extract of 100 µg concentration, exhibited significant hepatoprotection and reverse transcriptase polymerase (RT-PCR) analysis showed downregulation of iNOS gene expression in hepatocytes at transcriptional level. ZOF also showed significant cytotoxicity and propidium iodide staining confirmed the induction of apoptosis in cervical cancer cells (HeLa)., Conclusions: Findings of the present study prove that ZOF is a rich source of bioactive compounds with a wide range of pharmacological activities. Hence, consumption of this wild edible fruit will be a cost-effective and easily available natural nutritional source for health protection.
