$TbMn_{6}Sn_{6}$ is a ferrimagnetic material which exhibits a highly unusual phase transition near room temperature where spins remain collinear while the total magnetic moment rotates from out-of-plane to in-plane. The mechanisms underlying this phenomenon have been studied in the quasi-static limit and the reorientation has been attributed to the competing anisotropies of Tb and Mn, whose magnetic moments have very different temperature dependencies. In this work, we present the first measurement of the spin-reorientation transition in $TbMn_{6}Sn_{6}$. By probing very small signals with the transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect (TMOKE) at the Mn M-edge, we show that the re-orientation timescale spans from 12 ps to 24 ps, depending on the laser excitation fluence. We then verify these data with a simple model of spin precession with a temperature-dependent magnetocrystalline anisotropy field to show that the spin reorientation timescale is consistent with the reorientation being driven by very large anisotropies energies on approximately $\approx$ meV scales. Promisingly, the model predicts a possibility of 180o reorientation of the out-of-plane moment over a range of excitation fluences. This could facilitate optically controlled magnetization switching between very stable ground states, which could have useful applications in spintronics or data storage.

Accurate prediction of thermodynamic properties is pivotal in chemical engineering for optimizing process efficiency and sustainability. Physical group-contribution (GC) methods are widely employed for this purpose but suffer from historically grown, incomplete parameterizations, limiting their applicability and accuracy. In this work, we overcome these limitations by combining GC with matrix completion methods (MCM) from machine learning. We use the novel approach to predict a complete set of pair-interaction parameters for the most successful GC method: UNIFAC, the workhorse for predicting activity coefficients in liquid mixtures. The resulting new method, UNIFAC 2.0, is trained and validated on more than 224,000 experimental data points, showcasing significantly enhanced prediction accuracy (e.g., nearly halving the mean squared error) and increased scope by eliminating gaps in the original model's parameter table. Moreover, the generic nature of the approach facilitates updating the method with new data or tailoring it to specific applications.

We present the first hard-constraint neural network for predicting activity coefficients (HANNA), a thermodynamic mixture property that is the basis for many applications in science and engineering. Unlike traditional neural networks, which ignore physical laws and result in inconsistent predictions, our model is designed to strictly adhere to all thermodynamic consistency criteria. By leveraging deep-set neural networks, HANNA maintains symmetry under the permutation of the components. Furthermore, by hard-coding physical constraints in the network architecture, we ensure consistency with the Gibbs-Duhem equation and in modeling the pure components. The model was trained and evaluated on 317,421 data points for activity coefficients in binary mixtures from the Dortmund Data Bank, achieving significantly higher prediction accuracies than the current state-of-the-art model UNIFAC. Moreover, HANNA only requires the SMILES of the components as input, making it applicable to any binary mixture of interest. HANNA is fully open-source and available for free use.

We report the discovery and characterization of a small planet, TOI-1408 c, on a 2.2-day orbit located interior to a previously known hot Jupiter, TOI-1408 b ($P=4.42$ d, $M=1.86\pm0.02\,M_\mathrm{Jup}$, $R=2.4\pm0.5\,R_\mathrm{Jup}$) that exhibits grazing transits. The two planets are near 2:1 period commensurability, resulting in significant transit timing variations (TTVs) for both planets and transit duration variations (TDVs) for the inner planet. The TTV amplitude for TOI-1408 c is 15% of the planet's orbital period, marking the largest TTV amplitude relative to the orbital period measured to date. Photodynamical modeling of ground-based radial velocity (RV) observations and transit light curves obtained with the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) and ground-based facilities leads to an inner planet radius of $2.22\pm0.06\,R_\oplus$ and mass of $7.6\pm0.2\,M_\oplus$ that locates the planet into the Sub-Neptune regime. The proximity to the 2:1 period commensurability leads to the libration of the resonant argument of the inner planet. The RV measurements support the existence of a third body with an orbital period of several thousand days. This paper introduces the concept of spatial conceptual modeling, which allows anchoring mental world knowledge in the physical world using augmented reality technologies. For a first formal characterization, we describe a mapping from the spatial information concepts location, field, object, network, and event, as used in spatial computing, to conceptual modeling concepts using the FDMM formalism. This allows to identify necessary adaptations at the metamodeling level to make the approach applicable to arbitrary types of spatial conceptual modeling languages. Finally, possible application areas of spatial conceptual modeling in the medical domain, manufacturing and engineering, physical IT architectures and smart homes, supply chain management and logistics, civil engineering, and smart cities and cultural heritage are discussed.

We demonstrate that thermodynamic knowledge acquired by humans can be transferred to computers so that the machine can use it to solve thermodynamic problems and produce explainable solutions with a guarantee of correctness. The actionable knowledge representation system that we have created for this purpose is called KnowTD. It is based on an ontology of thermodynamics that represents knowledge of thermodynamic theory, material properties, and thermodynamic problems. The ontology is coupled with a reasoner that sets up the problem to be solved based on user input, extracts the correct, pertinent equations from the ontology, solves the resulting mathematical problem, and returns the solution to the user, together with an explanation of how it was obtained. KnowTD is presently limited to simple thermodynamic problems, similar to those discussed in an introductory course in Engineering Thermodynamics. Morphic sequences form a natural class of infinite sequences, typically defined as the coding of a fixed point of a morphism. Different morphisms and codings may yield the same morphic sequence. This paper investigates how to prove that two such representations of a morphic sequence by morphisms represent the same sequence. In particular, we focus on the smallest representations of the subsequences of the binary Fibonacci sequence obtained by only taking the even or odd elements. Penetration testing is the process of searching for security weaknesses by simulating an attack. It is usually performed by experienced professionals, where scanning and attack tools are applied. By automating the execution of such tools, the need for human interaction and decision-making could be reduced. In this work, a Network Attack Simulator (NASim) was used as an environment to train reinforcement learning agents to solve three predefined security scenarios. These scenarios cover techniques of exploitation, post-exploitation and wiretapping. A large hyperparameter grid search was performed to find the best hyperparameter combinations. The algorithms Q-learning, DQN and A3C were used, whereby A3C was able to solve all scenarios and achieve generalization. In addition, A3C could solve these scenarios with fewer actions than the baseline automated penetration testing. Although the training was performed on rather small scenarios and with small state and action spaces for the agents, the results show that a penetration test can successfully be performed by the RL agent.

We consider the incompressible and stationary Stokes equations on an infinite two-dimensional wedge with non-scaling invariant Navier-slip boundary conditions. We prove well-posedness and higher regularity of the Stokes problem in a certain class of weighted Sobolev spaces. The novelty of this work is the occurrence of two different scalings in the boundary condition, which is not treated so far for the Stokes system in unbounded wedge-type domains. These difficulties are overcome by first constructing a variational solution in a second order weighted Sobolev space and subsequently proving higher regularity up to the tip of the wedge by employing an iterative scheme. We believe that this method can be used for other problems with variational structure and multiple scales.

The recent demonstration of laser excitation of the $\approx 8$ eV isomeric state of thorium-229 is a significant step towards a nuclear clock. The low excitation energy likely results from a cancellation between the contributions of the electromagnetic and strong forces. Physics beyond the Standard Model could disrupt this cancellation, highlighting nuclear clocks' sensitivity to new physics. Accurate predictions of the different contributions to nuclear transition energies, and therefore of the quantitative sensitivity of a nuclear clock, are challenging. We improve upon previous sensitivity estimates and assess a ''nightmare scenario'', where all binding energy differences are small and the new physics sensitivity is poor. A classical geometric model of thorium-229 suggests that fine-tuning is needed for such a scenario. We also propose a $d$-wave halo model, inspired by effective field theory. We show that it reproduces observations and suggests the ''nightmare scenario'' is unlikely. We find that the nuclear clock's sensitivity to variations in the effective fine structure constant is enhanced by a factor of order $10^4$. We exhibit, for any positive integer parameter $s$, an involution on the set of integer partitions of $n$. These involutions show the joint symmetry of the distributions of the following two statistics. The first counts the number of parts of a partition divisible by $s$, whereas the second counts the number of cells in the Ferrers diagram of a partition whose leg length is zero and whose arm length has remainder $s-1$ when dividing by $s$. In particular, for $s=1$ this involution is just conjugation. Additionally, we provide explicit expressions for the bivariate generating functions. The healthcare industry is currently experiencing an unprecedented wave of cybersecurity attacks, impacting millions of individuals. With the discovery of thousands of vulnerabilities each month, there is a pressing need to drive the automation of vulnerability assessment processes for medical devices, facilitating rapid mitigation efforts. Generative AI systems have revolutionized various industries, offering unparalleled opportunities for automation and increased efficiency. This paper presents a solution leveraging Large Language Models (LLMs) to learn from historical evaluations of vulnerabilities for the automatic assessment of vulnerabilities in the medical devices industry. This approach is applied within the portfolio of a single manufacturer, taking into account device characteristics, including existing security posture and controls. The primary contributions of this paper are threefold. Firstly, it provides a detailed examination of the best practices for training a vulnerability Language Model (LM) in an industrial context. Secondly, it presents a comprehensive comparison and insightful analysis of the effectiveness of Language Models in vulnerability assessment. Finally, it proposes a new human-in-the-loop framework to expedite vulnerability evaluation processes.

Many socio-economical critical domains (such as sustainability, public health, and disasters) are characterized by highly complex and dynamic systems, requiring data and model-driven simulations to support decision-making. Due to a large number of unknowns, decision-makers usually need to generate ensembles of stochastic scenarios, requiring hundreds or thousands of individual simulation instances, each with different parameter settings corresponding to distinct scenarios, As the number of model parameters increases, the number of potential timelines one can simulate increases exponentially. Consequently, simulation ensembles are inherently sparse, even when they are extremely large. This necessitates a platform for (a) deciding which simulation instances to execute and (b) given a large simulation ensemble, enabling decision-makers to explore the resulting alternative timelines, by extracting and visualizing consistent, yet diverse timelines from continuous-coupled simulation ensembles. In this article, we present DataStorm-EM platform for data- and model-driven simulation ensemble management, optimization, analysis, and exploration, describe underlying challenges and present our solution.

Provenance data from astronomical pipelines are instrumental in establishing trust and reproducibility in the data processing and products. In addition, astronomers can query their provenance to answer questions routed in areas such as anomaly detection, recommendation, and prediction. The next generation of astronomical survey telescopes such as the Vera Rubin Observatory or Square Kilometre Array, are capable of producing peta to exabyte scale data, thereby amplifying the importance of even small improvements to the efficiency of provenance storage or querying. In order to determine how astronomers should store and query their provenance data, this paper reports on a comparison between the turtle and JSON provenance serialisations. The triple store Apache Jena Fuseki and the graph database system Neo4j were selected as representative database management systems (DBMS) for turtle and JSON, respectively. Simulated provenance data was uploaded to and queried over each DBMS and the metrics measured for comparison were the accuracy and timing of the queries as well as the data upload times. It was found that both serialisations are competent for this purpose, and both have similar query accuracy. The turtle provenance was found to be more efficient at storing and uploading the data. Regarding queries, for small datasets ($<$5MB) and simple information retrieval queries, the turtle serialisation was also found to be more efficient. Application-specific quantum computers offer the most efficient means to tackle problems intractable by classical computers. Realizing these architectures necessitates a deep understanding of quantum circuit properties and their relationship to execution outcomes on quantum devices. Our study aims to perform for the first time a rigorous examination of quantum circuits by introducing graph theory-based metrics extracted from their qubit interaction graph and gate dependency graph alongside conventional parameters describing the circuit itself. This methodology facilitates a comprehensive analysis and clustering of quantum circuits. Furthermore, it uncovers a connection between parameters rooted in both qubit interaction and gate dependency graphs, and the performance metrics for quantum circuit mapping, across a range of established quantum device and mapping configurations. Among the various device configurations, we particularly emphasize modular (i.e., multi-core) quantum computing architectures due to their high potential as a viable solution for quantum device scalability. This thorough analysis will help us to: i) identify key attributes of quantum circuits that affect the quantum circuit mapping performance metrics; ii) predict the performance on a specific chip for similar circuit structures; iii) determine preferable combinations of mapping techniques and hardware setups for specific circuits; and iv) define representative benchmark sets by clustering similarly structured circuits.

Almost in every heavily computation-dependent application, from 6G communication systems to autonomous driving platforms, a large portion of computing should be near to the client side. Edge computing (AI at Edge) in mobile devices is one of the optimized approaches for addressing this requirement. Therefore, in this work, the possibilities and challenges of implementing a low-latency and power-optimized smart mobile system are examined. Utilizing Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) based solutions at the edge will lead to bandwidth-optimized designs and as a consequence can boost the computational effectiveness at a system-level deadline. Moreover, various performance aspects and implementation feasibilities of Neural Networks (NNs) on both embedded FPGA edge devices (using Xilinx Multiprocessor System on Chip (MPSoC)) and Cloud are discussed throughout this research. Traffic conflict detection is essential for proactive road safety by identifying potential collisions before they occur. Existing methods rely on surrogate safety measures tailored to specific interactions (e.g., car-following, side-swiping, or path-crossing) and require varying thresholds in different traffic conditions. This variation leads to inconsistencies and limited adaptability of conflict detection in evolving traffic environments. Consequently, a need persists for consistent detection of traffic conflicts across interaction contexts. To address this need, this study proposes a unified probabilistic approach. The proposed approach establishes a unified framework of traffic conflict detection, where traffic conflicts are formulated as context-dependent extreme events of road user interactions. The detection of conflicts is then decomposed into a series of statistical learning tasks: representing interaction contexts, inferring proximity distributions, and assessing extreme collision risk. The unified formulation accommodates diverse hypotheses of traffic conflicts and the learning tasks enable data-driven analysis of factors such as motion states of road users, environment conditions, and participant characteristics. Jointly, this approach supports consistent and comprehensive evaluation of the collision risk emerging in road user interactions. Our experiments using real-world trajectory data show that the approach provides effective collision warnings, generalises across distinct datasets and traffic environments, covers a broad range of conflict types, and captures a long-tailed distribution of conflict intensity. National Forest Inventory (NFI) programs can provide vital information on the status, trend, and change in forest parameters. These programs are being increasingly asked to provide forest parameter estimates for spatial and temporal extents smaller than their current design and accompanying design-based methods can deliver with desired levels of uncertainty. Many NFI designs and estimation methods focus on status and are not well equipped to provide acceptable estimates for trend and change parameters, especially over small spatial domains and/or short time periods. Fine-scale space-time indexed estimates are critical to a variety of environmental, ecological, and economic monitoring efforts. Estimates for forest carbon status, trend, and change are of particular importance to international initiatives to track carbon dynamics. Model-based small area estimation (SAE) methods for NFI and similar ecological monitoring data typically pursue inference on status within small spatial domains, with few demonstrated methods that account for spatio-temporal dependence needed for trend and change estimation. We propose a spatio-temporal Bayesian model framework that delivers statistically valid estimates with full uncertainty quantification for status, trend, and change. The framework accommodates a variety of space and time dependency structures, and we detail model configurations for different settings. Through analysis of simulated datasets, we compare the relative performance of candidate models and a traditional direct estimator. We then apply candidate models to a large-scale NFI dataset to demonstrate the utility of the proposed framework for providing unique quantification of forest carbon dynamics in the contiguous United States. We also provide computationally efficient algorithms, software, and data to reproduce our results and for benchmarking.

Attosecond chronoscopy typically utilises interfering two-photon transitions to access the phase information. Simulating these two-photon transitions is challenging due to the continuum-continuum transition term. The hydrogenic approximation within second-order perturbation theory has been widely used due to the existence of analytical expressions of the wave functions. So far, only (partially) asymptotic results have been derived, which fail to correctly describe the low-kinetic-energy behaviour, especially for high angular-momentum states. Here, we report an analytical expression that overcome these limitations. They are based on the Appell's F1 function and use the confluent hypergeometric function of the second kind as the intermediate states. We show that the derived formula quantitatively agrees with the numerical simulations using the time-dependent Schr{\"o}dinger equation for various angular-momentum states, which improves the accuracy compared to the other analytical approaches that were previously reported. Furthermore, we give an angular-momentum-dependent asymptotic form of the outgoing wavefunction and their continuum-continuum dipole transition amplitudes.

The European Union Artificial Intelligence Act mandates clear stakeholder responsibilities in developing and deploying machine learning applications to avoid substantial fines, prioritizing private and secure data processing with data remaining at its origin. Federated Learning (FL) enables the training of generative AI Models across data siloes, sharing only model parameters while improving data security. Since FL is a cooperative learning paradigm, clients and servers naturally share legal responsibility in the FL pipeline. Stars in the Galactic disk are born on cold, nearly circular orbits with small vertical excursions. After their birth, their orbits evolve, driven by small- or large-scale perturbations in the Galactic disk's gravitational potential. Here, we study the vertical motions of young stars over their first few orbital periods, using a sample of OBA stars from \textit{Gaia} E/DR3, which includes radial velocities and ages $\tau$ from LAMOST. We constructed a parametric model for the time evolution of the stellar orbits' mean vertical actions $J_z$ as a function of Galactocentric radius, $R_{\mathrm{GC}}$. Accounting for data uncertainties, we use Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) analysis in annuli of Galactocentric radius to constrain the model parameters. Our best-fit model shows a remarkably linear increase of vertical actions with age across all Galactocentric radii examined. Orbital \textit{heating} by random scattering could offer a straightforward interpretation for this trend. However, various other dynamical aspects of the Galactic disk, such as stars being born in a warped disk, might offer alternative explanations that could be tested in the future., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures. A large population of intermediate-separation binaries, consisting of a main-sequence (MS) star and a white dwarf (WD), has recently emerged from Gaia's third data release (DR3), posing challenges to current models of binary evolution. Here we examine the $s$-process element abundances in these systems using data from GALAH DR3. Following refined sample analysis with parameter estimates based on GALAH spectra, we find a distinct locus where enhanced $s$-process elements depend on both the WD mass and metallicity, consistent with loci identified in previous asymptotic giant branch (AGB) nucleosynthesis studies with higher $s$-process yields. Notably, these enhanced abundances show no correlation with the systems' orbital parameters, supporting a history of accretion in intermediate-separation MS+WD systems. Consequently, our results form a direct observational evidence of a connection between AGB masses and $s$-process yields. We conclude by showing that the GALAH DR3 survey includes numerous Ba dwarf stars, within and beyond the mass range covered in our current sample, which can further elucidate $s$-process element distributions in MS+WD binaries., Comment: Published in ApJL; 12 pages, 10 figures

The need to reduce the environmental impact of inorganic electronic systems is pressing. Although the field of organic electronics provides a potential solution to this issue, research and optimization is still majorly carried out on glass or plastic substrates. Additionally, the fabrication of organic devices requiring transparent electrodes is fraught with complex techniques and expensive materials which limit widespread implementation and sustainability goals. Here, we show that the quasi-fractal lignocellulose structures extracted from natural leaves can be successfully modified to be used as biodegradable substrates as well as electrodes for optoelectronic applications. Chemically coating the microstructures of these leaf skeletons with metals results in quasi-transparent, flexible electrodes having sheet resistances below 1 ohm/sq. and a concomitant current carrying capacity as high as 6 A over a 2.5*2.5 cm2 leaf electrode, all while maintaining broadband optical transmittance values of around 80%., Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures, IEEE International conference publication

The hostile condition in a fusion tokomak reactor poses the main challenge in the development and design of in-vessel components such as divertor and breeding blanket due to fusion relevant irradiation conditions (14 MeV) and large thermal loads. The current work describes the employment of an integrated experimental-numerical approach to assess the microstructure evolution of dislocation loops and voids in tungsten proposed for fusion application. Cluster dynamics (CD) model is implemented and simulations are performed on the irradiated tungsten Disk shape Compact Tension (DCT) specimen used in the experimental test. TEM characterisation is performed on the DCT specimen irradiated at 400 {\deg}C and 600 {\deg}C with around 1 dpa, respectively. The dpa rate and cascade overlap rate from the experiments and SPECTRA-PKA code, respectively, are implemented in the CD model. Based on the comparison between experimental and computational results, the dose and temperature dependence of irradiation-induced defects (dislocation loops, voids, c15 clusters) are clearly observed. Trap mediated diffusion is studied and the impact of cascades with the pre-existing defects is analysed through full cascade overlap mode and the consequent influence on the defect concentration is evaluated. The exchange of self-interstitial atoms (SIAs) and the change in the size of loops through reaction between <111> and <100> loops are studied in detail by means of the transfer rate of the SIAs.

In many state-of-the-art control approaches for power systems with storage units, an explicit model of the storage dynamics is required. With growing numbers of storage units, identifying these dynamics can be cumbersome. This paper employs recent data-driven control approaches that do not require an explicit identification step. Instead, they use measured input/output data in control formulations. In detail, we propose an economic data-driven model predictive control (MPC) scheme to operate a small power system with input-nonlinear battery dynamics. First, a linear data-driven MPC approach that uses a slack variable to account for plant-model-mismatch is proposed. In a second step, an input-nonlinear data-driven MPC scheme is deduced. Comparisons with a reference indicate that the linear data-driven MPC approximates the nonlinear plant in an acceptable manner. Even better results, however, can be obtained with the input-nonlinear data-driven MPC scheme which provides increased prediction accuracy.

Non-invasive flow measurement techniques, such as particle tracking velocimetry, resolve 3D velocity fields by pairing tracer particle positions in successive time steps. These trajectories are crucial for evaluating physical quantities like vorticity, shear stress, pressure, and coherent structures. Traditional approaches deterministically reconstruct particle positions and extract particle tracks using tracking algorithms. However, reliable track estimation is challenging due to measurement noise caused by high particle density, particle image overlap, and falsely reconstructed 3D particle positions. To overcome this challenge, probabilistic approaches quantify the epistemic uncertainty in particle positions, typically using a Gaussian probability distribution. However, the standard deterministic tracking algorithms relying on nearest-neighbor search do not directly extend to the probabilistic setting. Moreover, such algorithms do not necessarily find globally consistent solutions robust to reconstruction errors. This paper aims to develop a globally consistent nearest-neighborhood algorithm that robustly extracts stochastic particle tracks from the reconstructed Gaussian particle distributions in all frames. Our tracking algorithm relies on the unbalanced optimal transport theory in the metric space of Gaussian measures. Specifically, we optimize a binary transport plan for efficiently moving the Gaussian distributions of reconstructed particle positions between time frames. We achieve this by computing the partial Wasserstein distance in the metric space of Gaussian measures. Our tracking algorithm is robust to position reconstruction errors since it automatically detects the number of particles that should be matched through hyperparameter optimization. Finally, we validate our method using an in vitro flow experiment using a 3D-printed cerebral aneurysm.

Nursing notes, an important part of Electronic Health Records (EHRs), track a patient's health during a care episode. Summarizing key information in nursing notes can help clinicians quickly understand patients' conditions. However, existing summarization methods in the clinical setting, especially abstractive methods, have overlooked nursing notes and require reference summaries for training. We introduce QGSumm, a novel query-guided self-supervised domain adaptation approach for abstractive nursing note summarization. The method uses patient-related clinical queries for guidance, and hence does not need reference summaries for training. Through automatic experiments and manual evaluation by an expert clinician, we study our approach and other state-of-the-art Large Language Models (LLMs) for nursing note summarization. Our experiments show: 1) GPT-4 is competitive in maintaining information in the original nursing notes, 2) QGSumm can generate high-quality summaries with a good balance between recall of the original content and hallucination rate lower than other top methods. Ultimately, our work offers a new perspective on conditional text summarization, tailored to clinical applications.

Recent studies have found evidence for parity violation in the BOSS spectroscopic galaxy survey, with statistical significance as high as $7\sigma$. These analyses assess the significance of the parity-odd four-point correlation function (4PCF) with a statistic called $\chi^2$. This statistic is biased if the parity-even eight-point correlation function (8PCF) of the data differs from the mock catalogs. We construct new statistics $\chi^2_\times$, $\chi^2_{\mathrm{null}}$ that separate the parity violation signal from the 8PCF bias term, allowing them to be jointly constrained. Applying these statistics to BOSS, we find that the parity violation signal ranges from $0$ to $2.5\sigma$ depending on analysis choices, whereas the 8PCF bias term is $\sim 6\sigma$. We conclude that there is no compelling evidence for parity violation in BOSS. We introduce an emulator-based method to model the cross-correlation between cosmological voids and galaxies. This allows us to model the effect of cosmology on void finding and on the shape of the void-galaxy cross-correlation function, improving on previous template-based methods. We train a neural network using the AbacusSummit simulation suite and fit to data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey sample. We recover information on the growth of structure through redshift-space distortions (RSD), and the geometry of the Universe through the Alcock-Paczy\'nski (AP) effect, measuring $\Omega_{\rm m} = 0.330\pm 0.020$ and $\sigma_8 = 0.777^{+0.047}_{-0.062}$ for a $\Lambda \rm{CDM}$ cosmology. Comparing to results from a template-based method, we find that fitting the shape of the void-galaxy cross-correlation function provides more information and leads to an improvement in constraining power. In contrast, we find that errors on the AP measurements were previously underestimated if void centres were assumed to have the same response to the AP effect as galaxies - a common simplification. Overall, we recover a $28\%$ reduction in errors for $\Omega_{\rm{m}}$ and similar errors on $\sigma_8$ with our new, more comprehensive, method. Future energy systems are subject to various uncertain influences. As resilient systems they should maintain a constantly high operational performance whatever happens. We explore different levels and time scales of decision making in energy systems, highlighting different uncertainty sources that are relevant in different domains. We discuss how the uncertainties can be represented and how one can react to them. The article closes by summarizing, which uncertainties are already well examined and which ones still need further scientific inquiry to obtain resilient energy systems.

We show that for a generic Riemannian metric on a compact manifold of dimension $n\ge 3$ all geodesic loops based at a fixed point have no self-intersections. We also show that for an open and dense subset of the space of Riemannian metrics on an $n$-disc with $n \ge 3$ and with a strictly convex boundary there are $n$ geometrically distinct orthogonal geodesic chords without self-intersections. This work explores use of novel advances in best subset selection for regression modelling via continuous optimization for offline change point detection and estimation in univariate Gaussian data sequences. The approach exploits reformulating the normal mean multiple change point model into a regularized statistical inverse problem enforcing sparsity. After introducing the problem statement, criteria and previous investigations via Lasso-regularization, the recently developed framework of continuous optimization for best subset selection (COMBSS) is briefly introduced and related to the problem at hand. Supervised and unsupervised perspectives are explored with the latter testing different approaches for the choice of regularization penalty parameters via the discrepancy principle and a confidence bound. The main result is an adaptation and evaluation of the COMBSS approach for offline normal mean multiple change-point detection via experimental results on simulated data for different choices of regularisation parameters. Results and future directions are discussed.

We analyze the competitive ratio and the advice complexity of the online unbounded knapsack problem. An instance is given as a sequence of n items with a size and a value each, and an algorithm has to decide how often to pack each item into a knapsack of bounded capacity. The items are given online and the total size of the packed items must not exceed the knapsack's capacity, while the objective is to maximize the total value of the packed items. While each item can only be packed once in the classical 0-1 knapsack problem, the unbounded version allows for items to be packed multiple times. We show that the simple unbounded knapsack problem, where the size of each item is equal to its value, allows for a competitive ratio of 2. We also analyze randomized algorithms and show that, in contrast to the 0-1 knapsack problem, one uniformly random bit cannot improve an algorithm's performance. More randomness lowers the competitive ratio to less than 1.736, but it can never be below 1.693. In the advice complexity setting, we measure how many bits of information the algorithm has to know to achieve some desired solution quality. For the simple unbounded knapsack problem, one advice bit lowers the competitive ratio to 3/2. While this cannot be improved with fewer than log(n) advice bits for instances of length n, a competitive ratio of 1+epsilon can be achieved with O(log(n/epsilon)/epsilon) advice bits for any epsilon>0. We further show that no amount of advice bounded by a function f(n) allows an algorithm to be optimal. We also study the online general unbounded knapsack problem and show that it does not allow for any bounded competitive ratio for deterministic and randomized algorithms, as well as for algorithms using fewer than log(n) advice bits. We also provide an algorithm that uses O(log(n/epsilon)/epsilon) advice bits to achieve a competitive ratio of 1+epsilon for any epsilon>0.

Under the assumption of statistical isotropy, and in the absence of directional selection effects, a stack of voids is expected to be spherically symmetric, which makes it an excellent object to use for an Alcock-Paczy\'nski (AP) test. This is commonly done using the void-galaxy cross-correlation function (CCF), which has emerged as a competitive probe, especially in combination with the galaxy-galaxy auto correlation function. Current studies of the AP effect around voids assume that the void centre positions transform under the choice of fiducial cosmology in the same way as galaxy positions. We show that this assumption, though prevalent in the literature, is complicated by the response of void-finding algorithms to shifts in tracer positions. Using stretched simulation boxes to emulate the AP effect, we investigate how the void-galaxy CCF changes under AP, revealing an additional effect imprinted in the CCF that must be accounted for. The effect comes from the response of void finders to the distorted tracer field, reducing the amplitude of the AP signal in the CCF, and thus depends on the specific void finding algorithm used. We present results for four different void finding packages: $\texttt{revolver}$, $\texttt{vide}$, $\texttt{voxel}$, and the spherical void finder in the $\texttt{Pylians3}$ library, demonstrating how incorrect treatment of the AP effect results in biases in the recovered parameters for all of them. PLATO (PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars) is ESA's M3 mission designed to detect and characterise extrasolar planets and perform asteroseismic monitoring of a large number of stars. PLATO will detect small planets (down to <2 R_(Earth)) around bright stars (<11 mag), including terrestrial planets in the habitable zone of solar-like stars. With the complement of radial velocity observations from the ground, planets will be characterised for their radius, mass, and age with high accuracy (5 %, 10 %, 10 % for an Earth-Sun combination respectively). PLATO will provide us with a large-scale catalogue of well-characterised small planets up to intermediate orbital periods, relevant for a meaningful comparison to planet formation theories and to better understand planet evolution. It will make possible comparative exoplanetology to place our Solar System planets in a broader context. In parallel, PLATO will study (host) stars using asteroseismology, allowing us to determine the stellar properties with high accuracy, substantially enhancing our knowledge of stellar structure and evolution. The payload instrument consists of 26 cameras with 12cm aperture each. For at least four years, the mission will perform high-precision photometric measurements. Here we review the science objectives, present PLATO's target samples and fields, provide an overview of expected core science performance as well as a description of the instrument and the mission profile at the beginning of the serial production of the flight cameras. PLATO is scheduled for a launch date end 2026. This overview therefore provides a summary of the mission to the community in preparation of the upcoming operational phases.

In the context of the European Erasmus+ project Teaching ASTronomy at the Educational level (TASTE), we investigated the extent to which a learning module at school and a set of activities during a planetarium visit help students to gain insight in the Apparent Motion of the Sun and Stars. Therefore, we have set up a two treatment study with a pretest posttest design. In the four participating countries (Belgium, Germany, Greece and Italy), secondary school students studied the concept of the celestial globe at school using newly designed learning materials. By using a latent class analysis, we identified different classes of student answers on the AMoSS test. We show how students evolve from one class to another between pretest and posttest. Overall the results of the pretest and posttest show that a good understanding of the different aspects of the apparent motion of celestial bodies is difficult to achieve.
