Abstract

An optimal design method is described for winding cross section of high temperature superconducting coils wound by Bi2223/Ag tape based on AC loss minimization. The results have shown that the AC loss in the optimized coil is reduced and the critical current of the optimized coil is increased when compared with the rectangle cross section coil.

Numerical analysis is used for studying the correction factor for rectangular and spiral pick-up loops. The analysis has shown that the ideal shape for a pick-up loop to measure AC transport current loss without an electrical connection.

Abstract

The AC transport current loss characteristics in three high temperature superconducting (HTS) tapes with edge-to-edge of face-to-face configuration and parallel or anti-parallel transport currents are analyzed. The results have shown that the AC transport current loss in HTS tapes in an assembled conductor has depended on the tape arrangement and the direction of the transport current.

Abstract

The characteristics of the open gradient magnetic chromatography by using the high temperature superconductor (HTS) bulk magnet and its applicability to the separation of multiple types of particles with different magnetic nature are examined by using numerical simulation. The numerical results have shown that the separation of paramagnetic particles of 20 nm diameter is possible.

The article discusses the application of superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) in the distribution system with dispersed generators (DGs). Results suggest that it is possible to limit the increase of the fault current with the introduction of DGs by using SFCL.

Superconducting coils of different coil arrangements using High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) tapes are examined. Results suggest that the toroidal coil requires 58 percent longer HTS tapes than the solenoidal coil for storing 100 kJ energy.

Abstract

A spiral pick-up loop without electrical contacts was used for examining the AC transport loss measurement for assembled conductors of multiple High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) tapes. Findings reveal a significant decline in the detection ratio of the AC transport loss by the spiral pick-up loop due to the distancing of the position of the return path from the center axis of the HTS tape in the conductor.

The various effects of high frequency AC magnetic field on the trapped magnetic field in a high temperature superconducting (HTS) bulk are studied. The AC losses are found to be larger in high frequency magnetic field, hence accelerating the decay of the trapped magnetic field.

Abstract

Enzymatic conversion of fatty acids (FAs) by fatty acid hydratases (FAHs) presents a green and efficient route for high-value hydroxy fatty acid (HFA) production. However, limited diversity was achieved among HFAs to date with respect to chain length and hydroxy position. In this study, two highly similar FAHs from Lactobacillus acidophilus were compared: FA-HY2 has narrow substrate scope and strict regioselectivity, whereas FA-HY1 utilizes longer chain substrates and hydrate various double bond positions. We reveal three active-site residues that play remarkable role in directing substrate specificity and regioselectivity of hydration. When these residues on FA-HY2 are mutated to the corresponding ones in FA-HY1, we observed a significant expansion of substrate scope and a distinct enhancement in hydration of double bonds towards w-end of FAs. A three-residue mutant of FA-HY2 (TM-FA-HY2) displayed an impressive reversal of regioselectivity towards linoleic acid, shifting ratio of the HFA regioisomers (10-OH:13-OH) from 99:1 to 12:88. Notable changes in regioselectivity were also observed for arachidonic acid and for C18 PUFA substrates. In addition, TM-FA-HY2 converted EPA to its 12-hydroxy product with high conversion at preparative scale. Furthermore, we demonstrated microalgae as a source of diverse FAs for HFA production. Our study paves the way for tailor-made FAH design enabling production of diverse HFAs for various applications from polymer industry to medical field.
