Background: Drug trials for male‐pattern hair loss (MPHL) did not investigate hair cycling. Materials and Methods: Male‐pattern hair loss volunteers (n = 22) took oral finasteride 1 mg daily with randomly either MTS5% or control lotion (1 mL/d). After 12 months on oral drug, 14 were randomized for a dose‐effect study of topical minoxidil 2% or 5%. Each 3‐month "on‐lotion" was followed by a 3‐month "off‐lotion." Results: Exogen release and anagen initiation from pre‐existing but functionally deficient follicles occurred mainly during combined dug treatment. Anagen initiation by topical minoxidil 5% could not be maintained by oral finasteride. As compared with control males, the compound index of hair growth raised from 30% at baseline up to 60% within 3 months of combined drug regimen which is better than oral drug only (no change) but still far beyond normalization of productivity (considered as 100%). There was no obvious transformation of miniaturized hair follicles into terminal hair‐producing follicles, and the activation of miniaturized hair follicles was not clinically relevant (slow growth and short duration of anagen). Conclusions: Benefit with oral finasteride and topical 5% minoxidil (1 mL, 1 per day) resulted from initiation of anagen in deficient terminal follicles without increased growth rates. Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are used to support professional learning at scale in many countries. The present study examined a MOOC named Flipped Classrooms that was specially designed for in-service teachers in China. This MOOC was offered for seven consecutive iterations across three years and allowed teachers to re-take this course in connection with their teaching practice. Overall, 16% of all 105,370 learners enrolled in at least two iterations of the MOOC. To understand their learning motivations, their learning engagement within the MOOC, and the connections they forged between the MOOC and their teaching, we conducted a mixed-methods study using multiple data sources including course registration records, course entry surveys, learning performance data, click logs, and semi-structured interviews. Results indicated that teacher-learners re-took the MOOC for various reasons such as refreshing domain understanding, improving grades, and addressing practical problems. Click log analysis found MOOC re-takers with different performance trajectories demonstrated distinct learning patterns across iterations. Qualitative analysis of the interview data revealed additional insights into learning within the MOOC and connections forged by the re-takers between the MOOC and their teaching practice. This study contributes fresh insights into the MOOC literature by investigating MOOC re-takers and sheds light on the promise of using MOOC to support networked professional learning. Protein kinase B/Akt is a serine/threonine kinase that links receptors coupled to the PI3K lipid kinase to cellular anabolic pathways. Its activity in cells is controlled by reversible phosphorylation and an intramolecular lipid‐controlled allosteric switch. In this review, I outline the current progress in understanding Akt regulatory mechanisms, define three models of Akt activation in cells, and highlight how intramolecular allosterism cooperates with cell‐autonomous mechanisms to control Akt localization and activity and direct it toward specific sets of substrates in cells. Colour pattern is the main trait that drives mate recognition between Heliconius species that are phylogenetically close. However, when this cue is compromised such as in cases of mimetic, sympatric and closely related species, alternative mating signals must evolve to ensure reproductive isolation and species integrity. The closely related species Heliconius melpomene malleti and H. timareta florencia occur in the same geographical region, and despite being co-mimics, they display strong reproductive isolation. In order to test which cues differ between species, and potentially contribute to reproductive isolation, we quantified differences in the wing phenotype and the male chemical profile. As expected, the wing colour pattern was indistinguishable between the two species, while the chemical profile of the androconial and genital males' extracts showed marked differences. We then conducted behavioural experiments to study the importance of these signals in mate recognition by females. In agreement with our previous results, we found that chemical blends and not wing colour pattern drive the preference of females for conspecific males. Also, experiments with hybrid males and females suggested an important genetic component for both chemical production and preference. Altogether, these results suggest that chemicals are the major reproductive barrier opposing gene flow between these two sister and co-mimic species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The specificity of ambrosia beetle-fungus relationships is unknown for the vast majority of ambrosia symbioses, yet has important implications for the success of these beetles and fungi in their surrounding environments. The polyphagous shot hole borer and the Kuroshio shot hole borer (Euwallacea spp.) are invasive ambrosia beetles that exist sympatrically in California, and together with their fungi cause Fusarium Dieback in a variety of hosts. The potential for the two beetle species to exchange symbionts is unknown, but has important ecological consequences. Here we perform symbiont switching experiments, to determine if the polyphagous and Kuroshio shot hole borers can survive and reproduce on each other's symbiotic fungi in their invasive range in California. Aposymbiotic foundresses were assessed on their ability to reproduce on each of the beetles' primary (Fusarium spp.) and auxiliary (Graphium spp., Paracremonium pembeum) fungal symbionts, grown on sawdust-based artificial media. Offspring were collected to confirm which fungi were present in the different sexes and life stages. Additionally, the ability of aposymbiotic and non-aposymbiotic foundresses to survive and reproduce on non-ambrosial Fusarium species was tested. We found that reproduction is maximized on the beetles' primary Fusarium symbionts, regardless of whether a beetle was paired with its own Fusarium symbiont or its congener's, indicating that there is potential for symbiont switching in natural populations of these beetles. The addition of auxiliary fungi to treatments containing Fusarium spp. had no effect on overall offspring production, and females that were fed solely on auxiliary fungi produced significantly fewer offspring. Females that were fed non-ambrosial Fusarium species produced significantly fewer offspring than when reared on symbiotic Fusarium, and this was especially pronounced in aposymbiotic females. From our experiments, the putative roles of the primary versus auxiliary fungal symbionts, as well as the implications of these roles for beetle reproduction and development in their surrounding environment, are discussed. The Aedes aegypti mosquito serves as a major vector for viral diseases, such as dengue, chikungunya, and Zika, which are spreading across the globe and threatening public health. In addition to increased vector transmission, the prevalence of insecticide-resistant mosquitoes is also on the rise, thus solidifying the need for new, safe and effective insecticides to control mosquito populations. We recently discovered that cinnamodial, a unique drimane sesquiterpene dialdehyde of the Malagasy medicinal plant Cinnamosma fragrans, exhibited significant larval and adult toxicity to Ae. aegypti and was more efficacious than DEET–the gold standard for insect repellents–at repelling adult female Ae. aegypti from blood feeding. In this study several semi-synthetic analogues of cinnamodial were prepared to probe the structure-activity relationship (SAR) for larvicidal, adulticidal and antifeedant activity against Ae. aegypti. Initial efforts were focused on modification of the dialdehyde functionality to produce more stable active analogues and to understand the importance of the 1,4-dialdehyde and the α,ß-unsaturated carbonyl in the observed bioactivity of cinnamodial against mosquitoes. This study represents the first investigation into the SAR of cinnamodial as an insecticide and antifeedant against the medically important Ae. aegypti mosquito. Author summary: Aedes mosquitoes are the primary carriers of Zika, dengue, chikungunya, and yellow fever viruses around the globe. Given the emergence of insecticide-resistance in this genus and unprecedented 'globalization' of mosquito-borne viruses, new chemicals to control these mosquitoes (e.g., insecticides, repellents) are urgently needed. In the continuation of our search for new and safe natural product derived insecticides, we generated semi-synthetic derivatives of cinnamodial (CDIAL), previously identified as an insect antifeedant, repellent and insecticide, to give insights into the important features of the molecule that can contribute to the observed activities. Since the antifeedant and repellent activity of CDIAL are found to be mediated by modulation of a sensory receptor (TRPA1) in the mosquito, we developed a structural model to understand how CDIAL interacts with TRPA1 and to explain the difference in activities of CDIAL and the prepared derivatives. Our findings aid in the development of plant-derived insecticides to control the Ae. aegypti mosquito and justify continued efforts using TRPA1 as a target for new mosquito repellents. One exercise session can increase subsequent insulin-stimulated glucose uptake (ISGU) by skeletal muscle. Prior research on healthy muscle suggests that enhanced postexercise ISGU depends on elevated γ3-AMPK activity leading to greater phosphorylation of Akt substrate of 160 kDa (pAS160) on an AMPK-phosphomotif (Ser704). Phosphorylation of AS160Ser704, in turn, may favor greater insulin-stimulated pAS160 on an Akt-phosphomotif (Thr642) that regulates ISGU. Accordingly, we tested if exercise-induced increases in γ3-AMPK activity and pAS160 on key regulatory sites accompany improved ISGU at 3 h postexercise (3hPEX) in insulin-resistant muscle. Rats fed a high-fat diet (HFD; 2-wk) that induces insulin resistance either performed acute swim-exercise (2 h) or were sedentary (SED). SED rats fed a low-fat diet (LFD; 2 wk) served as healthy controls. Isolated epitrochlearis muscles from 3hPEX and SED rats were analyzed for ISGU, pAS160, pAkt2 (Akt-isoform that phosphorylates pAS160Thr642), and γ1-AMPK and γ3-AMPK activity. ISGU was lower in HFD-SED muscles versus LFD-SED, but this decrement was eliminated in the HFD-3hPEX group. γ3-AMPK activity, but not γ1-AMPK activity, was elevated in HFD-3hPEX muscles versus both SED controls. Furthermore, insulin-stimulated pAS160Thr642, pAS160Ser704, and pAkt2Ser474 in HFD-3hPEX muscles were elevated above HFD-SED and equal to values in LFD-SED muscles, but insulin-independent pAS160Ser704 was unaltered at 3hPEX. These results demonstrated, for the first time in an insulin-resistant model, that the postexercise increase in ISGU was accompanied by sustained enhancement of γ3-AMPK activation and greater pAkt2Ser474. Our working hypothesis is that these changes along with enhanced insulin-stimulated pAS160 increase ISGU of insulin-resistant muscles to values equaling insulin-sensitive sedentary controls. BACKGROUND: Beta‐aminobutyric acid (BABA) confer plant resistance to a broad spectrum of biotic and abiotic stresses. The soybean aphid (SBA), is native to eastern Asia and is a predominant insect pest of soybean. Both isoflavone and lignin pathway are important branches of the general phenylpropanoid pathway, which would be likely associated with resistance against soybean aphid. However, little is known about the role of the phenylpropanoid pathway in defense response to SBA as induced by BABA application. RESULTS: The application of BABA effectively enhanced soybean resistance against Aphis glycines, the soybean aphid. Consistent with significantly increased content of isoflavones, especially genistein, the related biosynthetic genes were upregulated by use of BABA. Lignin, another important defense component against arthropods, accumulated at a high level and four lignin biosynthesis related genes were also activated. Additionally, BABA application augmented the expression of callose synthase genes and increased callose deposition in SBA‐infested seedlings. In non‐caged and caged tests, SBA numbers were significantly reduced in BABA‐treated seedlings. CONCLUSION: These results demonstrate that application of BABA has an obvious positive effect on soybean resistance to aphids, and this defense response partly depends on the potentiation of isoflavone biosynthesis and callose deposition. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Gypsy moth, Lymantria dispar L. (Lepidoptera: Erebidae) feeds on a large number of tree species, while ash, Fraxinus spp. (Lamiales: Oleaceae) species are considered resistant and are only sporadically eaten. To assess the conditions under which late instar gypsy moth larvae (GML) can temporarily use non-host common ash (CA) (F. excelsior L.), and to evaluate their ability to recover from ingestion of this toxic food, we determined the relative growth rate, the relative consumption rate and the amount of produced feces in different laboratory feeding trials. Our report is the first to show that under specific circumstances, the resources acquired after short-term consumption of CA leaves can be utilized for larval growth. We varied the intensity of density and starvation stress prior to feeding on CA leaves. We observed that after moderate stress a group of GML was temporarily capable of coping with CA leaves. Although observed growth and consumption were much lower on CA than on the optimal host oak, Quercus cerris L. (Fagales: Fagaceae), CA-oak-switched larvae showed the ability to recover from short-term use of a toxic non-host foliage. This study aims to examine nursing students' experiences on assessing the sexuality of patients. This research is a mixed method study consisting of two stages as qualitative and quantitative. The first stage was carried out with 104 students using a socio-demographical data form and the sexual attitude and belief scale (SABS) to collect data. In this stage, most students stated that they could collected data about patients' sexuality in clinical practice; however, they could not make a nursing diagnosis and give care regarding sexuality. It was determined that this was due to the age, gender and education level of the patient/nurse. A significant difference was found between SABS total scores of students who collected data about sexual health and those who did not (p < 0.05). The second stage was carried out with 72 students. Focus group interviews were performed to examine the students' experiences on assessing the sexuality of their patients. Two main themes were specified: barriers and recommendations. Most nursing students perceived many characteristics, particularly socio-demographical characteristics, as barriers for talking about sexual matters. Nursing care in this field is postponed since they do not talk about sexual problems. Nursing students' problems in assessing the patients' sexuality must be realized in the first year of education. This study was carried out to determine the changes in sexual functioning of patients with cancer. We identified the frequency and causes of changes in sexual functioning among patients with cancer, and determined whether this change differed according to age, type of cancer, type of treatment, side effects of drugs, anxiety, depression, and perceived social support. The study was conducted with 192 patients with cancer. Data were collected using the data collection form which included questions about socio-demographic, disease-related characteristics as well as those related to changes in sexual functioning. In addition, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support Scale were used. Data were analyzed using the SPSS 15.0 software. For analyzing the data, means, frequencies, percentages, t test and Pearson's Chi square test were used. Of the patients with cancer, 69.3% were experiencing changes in sexual functioning, where 75.9% of those began to have changes in sexual functioning only after the cancer. Experiencing changes in sexual functioning after cancer did not differ according to the type of cancer (when genitourinary cancers and breast cancer were compared to the other cancer types) (p > 0.05). Experiencing changes in sexual functioning after cancer significantly differed according to age, the presence of fatigue, and depression scores (p < 0.05). The mean age of those who experienced changes in sexual functioning after the cancer was lower than those who did not, their fatigue rate and depression scores were higher. It is suggested that healthcare professionals should view sexual functions as vital functions such as movement, eating, and respiration and evaluate patients with regard to those functions. Global climatic fluctuations and the increasing population have been responsible for the decline in the crop productivity. The chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and suitable genetic resources are commonly used for improving the crop yield. Magnetic field (MF) therapy for plants and animals has been found to be an effective and emerging tool to control diseases and increase tolerance against the adverse environment. Very limited studies have been attempted to determine the role of MF on plant tolerance against various stress conditions. This review aims to highlight the mitigating effect of MF on plants against abiotic and biotic stresses. MF interacts with seeds and plants and accelerates metabolism, which leads to an improved germination. The primary and secondary metabolites, enzyme activities, uptake of nutrient and water are reprogrammed to stimulate the plant growth and yield under favorable conditions. During adverse conditions of abiotic stress such as drought, salt, heavy metal contamination in soil, MF mitigates the stress effects by increasing antioxidants and reducing oxidative stress in plants. The stunted plant growth under different light and temperature conditions can be overcome by the exposure to MF. An MF treatment lowers the disease index of plants due to the modulation of calcium signaling, and proline and polyamines pathways. This review explores the basic and recent information about the impact of MF on plant survival against the adverse environment and emphasizes that thorough research is required to elucidate the mechanism of its interaction to protect the plants from biotic and abiotic stresses. Background: Biopsy‐based "reversal hypothesis" claimed conversion of miniaturized hair follicles into terminal ones for the improvement of male pattern hair loss (MPHL) with FDA‐approved drugs. Materials and methods: MPHL volunteers (n = 13) completed a 24‐month phototrichogram study. After 2 months no‐treatment, panellists took finasteride 1mg daily for 2 years. Hair changes from the best responder would explain the nature of improved hair growth. Results: Due to the wide range of hair growth variables, no parameter was statistically significantly changed by finasteride in the group. Clinically there were 4 worse, 6 no change, 2 slightly and 1 moderately improved subject associated with turning telogen/empty terminal follicles into anagen after 12‐ and 24‐month finasteride. From 113 miniaturized hair (diameters ≤ 30 µm) at baseline, 79 were still miniature hair after 2 years on finasteride. No hair were found at the remaining mapped sites except for 2 terminal hairs considered a probabilistic "uncertainty." Conclusion: Moderate hair improvement resulted from increased productivity of deficient terminal follicles, but not yet irreversibly affected at baseline without implication of miniaturized hair follicles. The latter further regressed even with oral intake of finasteride. The data suggest the rejection of the "reversal hypothesis" unless proven otherwise with duly validated methods. The bean fly (Ophiomya spp) is the most important yield limiting insect pest of common bean in Africa. The insect pest can cause complete crop loss affecting bean production and productivity under epidemic conditions. Effective control of bean fly is essential for sustainable bean production Africa. The overall progress, opportunities and challenges of the bean fly control strategies. The biology and ecology of bean fly and the economic importance of the insect pest is presented as well as the existing controlling strategies, with an emphasis on the breeding on breeding strategies used, research progress achieved challenges and opportunities. In conclusion, significant research progress have been made in breeding for bean fly resistance evident by identification of breeding lines, understanding resistance mechanism and development of breeding strategies. However, there is a need for further research to validate the available information and also explore new breeding methods such molecular breeding which has not been explored at present. Akt/PKB is an important crosstalk node at the junction between a number of major signalling pathways in the mammalian cell. As a significant nutrient sensor, Akt plays a central role in many cellular processes, including cell growth, cell survival and glucose metabolism. The dysregulation of Akt signalling is implicated in the development of many diseases, from diabetes to cancer. The translocation of Akt from cytosol to plasma membrane is a crucial step in Akt activation. Akt is initially synthesized on the endoplasmic reticulum, but translocates to the plasma membrane (PM) in response to insulin stimulation, where it may be activated. The Akt is then recycled to the cytoplasm. The activated Akt may propagate signals to downstream substrates both at the PM and in the cytosol, hence understanding the translocation dynamics is an important step in dissecting the signalling system. At the present time, however, knowledge concerning the translocation of either activated and unactivated Akt is scant. Here we present a simple, deterministic, three-compartment ordinary differential equation model of Akt translocation in vitro. This model can reproduce the salient features of Akt translocation in a manner consistent with the experimental data. Furthermore, we demonstrate that this system is equivalent to a damped harmonic oscillator, and analyse the steady state and transient behaviour of the model over the entire parameter space. This study focuses on a group of in-service teachers in a teacher training institute in Fiji. In-service teachers in this context of study refer to full time teachers who are enrolled in teacher training institutes and take up part-time studies. The study aims to examine the in-service teachers' experiences on ICT (Information and Communication Technology) integration in the school curriculum and their perceptions on the barriers that prevent teachers from using ICT in the classroom. It also looks at teachers' ICT qualification to see if they have any ICT background. A validated questionnaire, which was pre-tested on pre-service teachers, was administered to 30 in-service teachers who were selected from rural, urban and remote schools. The findings indicate that majority of the teachers do not have ICT background but are able to use technology in their everyday lives and use it for mandatory record keeping purposes. However, according to the teachers, barriers such as limited access to computers, lack of funding, sporadic electricity and lack of ICT related polices and training often limit successful integration of ICT in the curriculum. We investigated the cannibalism and its association with cannibalistic grooming in Reticulitermes speratus (Kolbe), first by observing workers' cannibalistic behavior against workers artificially wounded on different body parts. Almost all the wounded thoraces and abdomina were eaten, while in some of the abdomen-wounded individuals, nestmates' cannibalism extended from the abdomen to the thorax, and thorax was cannibalistically attacked in all the abdomen-wounded individuals. In thorax-wounded individuals cannibalistic damage mostly extended from the thorax to the abdomen to a lesser degree. In the assessments of the frequencies and durations of the cannibalistic groomings toward different body parts, the wounded individuals, upon being groomed, occasionally exhibited vibrational behavior, and its frequencies upon the groomings toward wounded body parts were significantly higher than those toward non-wounded body parts. Vibration significantly reduced the duration of cannibalistic grooming on the wounded head and abdomen, while it reduced the grooming frequency and did not reduce the duration of grooming on wounded thorax. These results suggest that the vibration serves as a vital sign or death-negative factor in death recognition. A feeding experiment with workers' cuticular hydrocarbon extract showed that it did not promote cannibalistic behavior. A feeding experiment with filter papers impregnated with different body part extracts showed that all the extracts exhibited phagostimulant activity, with workers' body extracts resulting in significantly higher quantity of consumption than in soldiers' except abdomen. Further assay revealed a stronger activity of labial gland compared to the labial gland-removed thorax, suggesting the key role of labial gland in cannibalism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Eusocial insects frequently face death of colony members as a consequence of living in large groups where the success of the colony is not dependent on the fate of the individual. Whereas death of conspecifics commonly triggers aversion in many group-living species due to risk of pathogens, eusocial insects perform cooperative corpse management. The causes and social context of the death, as well as feeding and nesting ecology of the species, influence the way that corpses are treated. The corpse itself releases cues that dictate the colony's response. As a result, social insects exhibit behavioural responses that promote disease resistance, colony defence and nutrient recycling. Corpse management represents a unique adaption that enhances colony success, and is another factor that has enabled eusocial insects to be so successful. In this review, we summarize the causes of death, the sensory detection of death and corpse management strategies of social insects. In addition, we provide insights into the evolution of behavioural response to the dead and the ecological relevance of corpse management. Soybean looper, Chrysodeixis includens (Walker), is one of the most destructive pests of soybean in the southern U.S. Soybean looper defoliation exceeding 20% from R3 (pod initiation) to R5 (pod fill) can result in significant yield loss. In addition, soybean looper is highly resistant to many insecticides. An alternative to insecticide control is induced host plant resistance. In this study, a total of four experiments over 2 years were conducted in which three different elicitors of SAR (systemic acquired resistance), Actigard 50WG (acibenzolar-S-methyl), Regalia (extract of Reynoutria sachalinensis), and methyl jasmonate (MeJA), were applied to soybean at different plant stages to determine if these chemicals could induce plant resistance and lower soybean looper fitness. None of the elicitors of SAR significantly affected soybean looper mortality. However, Actigard 50WG, MeJA, and Regalia had adverse effects on developmental time, defoliation, and pupal weight of soybean looper. Induced effects by Regalia on soybean looper were very limited compared to Actigard 50WG and MeJA. A single application of MeJA reduced pupal weight by 6.8% and delayed larval development by 14.3%. Soybean seed production was not affected by application of elicitors. In conclusion, the results suggest that exogenous elicitors applied in the field can trigger plant resistance against herbivores and this low level of host plant resistance may effectively lessen pest pressure by favoring natural enemy population regulation without reducing seed production. Saline soils are becoming an important limiting factor in production agriculture. Soybean cultivars [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] differ in their ability to tolerate salt stress with those that cannot limit ion uptake into leaves being salt sensitive. Those that can partially limit ion uptake into leaves are generally more salt tolerant. Soybean mosaic virus (SMV) is an important viral pathogen of soybean worldwide and is commonly transmitted by the soybean aphid, Aphis glycines Matsumura. In this study, we investigate the interaction of salt stress in soybean with SMV infection and infestation by the soybean aphid by measuring aphid populations in a no-choice assay, gene expression levels, and the induction of volatile organic compounds using static headspace GC-MS analysis. Salt stress and SMV infection both reduced total aphid populations, though SMV did not reduce the total number of aphids per gram of fresh weight. Aphid suppression of a calcium EF hand gene and OPR1 was lost when salt-sensitive soybean plants were salt stressed and when salt-tolerant plants were subjected to all three stressors. The relative levels of SMV in aphid-infested soybeans were increased by salt stress in the salt-sensitive cultivar, whereas SMV levels decreased in the salt-tolerant cultivar. Static headspace collection of volatile organic compounds revealed that salt stress and SMV infection had suppressive activities on aphid-induced terpenes. These results suggest that although salt stress has a negative impact on aphid population size, the changes in volatiles and SMV levels could alter the incidence of SMV in salt-stressed fields. Apart from other pollutants, flaring of natural gas adds carbon dioxide into the environment and changes the atmospheric composition, including temperature and humidity. As a major gaseous product, carbon dioxide changes plant structural components as well as herbivores, i.e., insect by dilution of nitrogen under such circumstances. Present analysis demonstrated the impact of gas flaring upon adjoining biota especially Eurema hecabe butterfly and its host plant, Cassia tora in some wells (group gathering stations) of Assam, India. Analysis, pertaining from the current investigation, documented higher carbon dioxide as well as temperature in the studied flaring sites. Apart from this, reduction of leaf nitrogen, SLA, and chlorophyll with increasing in LDMC, thickness, and carbon in the studied plant as well as poor developmental rate, RGR, ECD with high RCR in insect indicated severe impact of flaring in those areas. Ambrosia beetles subsist on fungal symbionts that they carry to, and cultivate in, their natal galleries. These symbionts are usually saprobes, but some are phytopathogens. Very few ambrosial symbioses have been studied closely, and little is known about roles that phytopathogenic symbionts play in the life cycles of these beetles. One of the latter symbionts, Raffaelea lauricola, causes laurel wilt of avocado, Persea americana, but its original ambrosia beetle partner, Xyleborus glabratus, plays an uncertain role in this pathosystem. We examined the response of a putative, alternative vector of R. lauricola, Xyleborus bispinatus, to artificial diets of R. lauricola and other ambrosia fungi. Newly eclosed, unfertilized females of X. bispinatus were reared in no-choice assays on one of five different symbionts or no symbiont. Xyleborus bispinatus developed successfully on R. lauricola, R. arxii, R. subalba and R. subfusca, all of which had been previously recovered from field-collected females of X. bispinatus. However, no development was observed in the absence of a symbiont or on another symbiont, Ambrosiella roeperi, recovered from another ambrosia beetle, Xylosandrus crassiusculus. In the no-choice assays, mycangia of foundress females of X. bispinatus harbored significant colony-forming units of, and natal galleries that they produced were colonized with, the respective Raffaelea symbionts; with each of these fungi, reproduction, fecundity and survival of the beetle were positively impacted. However, no fungus was recovered from, and reproduction did not occur on, the A. roeperi and no symbiont diets. These results highlight the flexible nature of the ambrosial symbiosis, which for X. bispinatus includes a fungus with which it has no evolutionary history. Animal-microbe mutualisms are typically maintained by vertical symbiont transmission or partner choice. A thirdmechanism, screening of high-quality symbionts, has been predicted in theory, but empirical examples are rare. Here we demonstrate that ambrosia beetles rely on ethanol within host trees for promoting gardens of their fungal symbiont and producing offspring. Ethanol has long been known as themain attractant formany of these fungus-farming beetles as they select host trees in which they excavate tunnels and cultivate fungal gardens. More than 300 attacks by Xylosandrus germanus and other species were triggered by baiting trees with ethanol lures, but none of the foundresses established fungal gardens or produced broods unless tree tissues contained in vivo ethanol resulting from irrigation with ethanol solutions.More X. germanus brood were also produced in a rearing substrate containing ethanol. These benefits are a result of increased food supply via the positive effects of ethanol on foodfungus biomass. Selected Ambrosiella and Raffaelea fungal isolates from ethanol-responsive ambrosia beetles profited directly and indirectly by (i) a higher biomass on medium containing ethanol, (ii) strong alcohol dehydrogenase enzymatic activity, and (iii) a competitive advantage over weedy fungal garden competitors (Aspergillus, Penicillium) that are inhibited by ethanol. As ambrosia fungi both detoxify and produce ethanol, they may maintain the selectivity of their alcohol-rich habitat for their own purpose and that of other ethanol-resistant/producing microbes. This resembles biological screening of beneficial symbionts and a potentially widespread, unstudied benefit of alcohol-producing symbionts (e.g., yeasts) in other microbial symbioses. The intellectual origins of information organization (IO) as a field of study are examined by tracing the use of the terms, "information organization", "knowledge organization", "bibliographic control", and their variants, and by surveying the educational texts dealing with the various component activities of IO, along with reports and discussions of corresponding curricula, across the twentieth century. Analysis reveals that the notion of a single, composite field covering cataloguing, classification, indexing and the other IO activities, only became established in the late twentieth century, mirroring the broadening of the Library and Information Science curriculum toward that advocated by the "iSchool" movement. Prior to this, three phases of curriculum development are identified: the teaching of cataloguing and classification as distinct fields in the initial decades of Library Science education; these two activities then being taught as the combined field of "cat and class"; and, a growing coverage of other activities of "bibliographic control" from the 1960s onwards, such as those emphasizing the "subject approach" to IO. This last phase can be seen as a precursor to the establishment of IO as a generic field of study. The validity and prospects of the field are discussed in light of the historical account. In this study, the efficacy of seven fungicides (azoxystrobin, captan, iprodione, imazalil, prochloraz, thiram and cyprodinil+fludioxonil) on two isolates (TR-202 and TR-205) of Ambrosiella hartigii was evaluated at in vitro. The fungicides at five concentrations (0.25x, 0.5x, 1.0x, 2.0x and 4.0x; where x is the field rate recommended by the manufacturer) were used in this study. Results showed that all doses of the fungicides significantly inhibited the mycelial growth of these isolates compared to the control (P<0.05). Captan, imazalil, prochloraz and cyprodinil+fludioxonil were found to completely inhibite the mycelial growth of A. hartigii isolates even at the lowest dose while thiram, iprodione and azoxystrobin depending on increased doses reduced the mycelial growth of these isolates at rates between 75-100%, 65-100% and 52-85%, respectively. The doses that caused 50% reduction (ED50), minimum inhibition concentration (MIC), and minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) values indicated that imazalil, prochloraz and cyprodinil+ fludioxonil were more effective against the fungus compared to other fungicides. We investigated the female oviposition preference and larval performance and behavior of Trichoplusia ni (Hubner) on cabbage, tomato, soybean (host plants), and wormseed (nonhost plant) in laboratory experiments. In addition, we investigated the role of trichomes in the oviposition of females. Females oviposited more often on cabbage than on tomato, soybean, or wormseed plants. Tomato was the second most preferred plant, followed by soybean and wormseed. Neonate larvae gained more weight on cabbage and tomato than on soybean or wormseed, while second-instar larvae grew better on cabbage than on tomato, soybean, or wormseed. The least growth of neonate larvae occurred on wormseed plants. The orientation of neonate and second-instar larvae to cabbage, tomato, soybean, and wormseed did not differ significantly. Neonate larvae settled equally on leaf discs of cabbage, tomato, soybean, and wormseed, while most second-instar larvae settled on leaf discs of cabbage in comparison with the other plants after 24 h of release. The foliar area consumed by neonate larvae was quite similar among plants, but second-instar larvae consumed more cabbage than tomato, soybean, or wormseed. Comparing different types of leaves, females oviposited more often on mature than young leaves of tomato, soybean, and wormseed. In contrast, females did not show any preference for ovipositing on young or mature leaves of cabbage. In general, we found that the density or length of nonglandular and glandular trichomes of tomato, soybean, and wormseed plants negatively affected oviposition of T. ni females. Euphorbia ingens, landmark succulent trees in savannas of South Africa, have been dying in large numbers over the last 10–15 years. Initial studies conducted in the Limpopo province of South Africa revealed a diverse group of biotic agents including fungi, beetles and moths associated with dying trees, but due to the limited geographic extent of these studies, it was not known if the same agents were associated with dying trees regionally. In this study, diseased and insect-infested trees were sampled for fungal pathogens and insects at six sites in four provinces located across South Africa. Fungi were identified based on morphology and DNA sequencing of the ITS, LSU, β-tubulin and TEF 1-α gene regions, and insects were identified based on morphology. Fungal isolates were identified asAureovirgo volantis,Fusarium solani,Lasiodiplodia×egyptiacae,Ophiostoma thermarumand aReaderiellaspecies. Five insects were identified, all in the family Curculionidae, including two ambrosia beetles,Cyrtogenius africusand aStenoscelisspecies. All fungi and insects collected are known to be opportunistic and occur on stressed trees as secondary agents of mortality or disease. These results suggest that the die-off is not related to attack of the trees by aggressive insects or pathogens, but rather thatE. ingensin this region is under stress from environmental factors that supports the ability of opportunistic insects and pathogens to establish. The effect of various flavonoids, lectins and phenyl β-D-glucoside on larval survival, weights and the activities of digestive (total serine protease and trypsin) and detoxifying (esterase and glutathione-S-transferase) enzymes of Spodoptera litura larvae at 7 days after treatment was studied through diet incorporation assay. Flavonoids (rutin, chlorogenic acid, quinic acid, caffeic acid, naringenin, quercitin, kaempferol, myricetin, catechin, and ferulic acid) were incorporated in artificial diet at 100, 500 and 1000 ppm, lectins: groundnut leaf lectin (GLL), concavalin A (ConA) and phenyl β-D-glucoside at 1, 2 and 5 μg/mL. Flavonoids such as rutin, quercitin and kaempferol at 1000 ppm were more toxic to S. litura larvae than quinic acid, caffeic acid, naringenin,myricetin, catechin, and ferulic acid. Larval growth and development were significantly reduced in S. litura larvae fed on a diet with GLL and ConA at 5 μg/mL compared to the larvae fed at 2 and 1 μg/mL concentrations. The larvae fed on flavonoid-treated diets showed significant reduction in serine protease, trypsin and esterase activities. The flavonoids such as rutin, chlorogenic acid, quinic acid, naringenin, quercitin, kaempferol and myricetin, and lectins, GLL and ConA can be utilized in insect control programs. The usage of laser in medicine is not recent, and its history in urology goes back to 40 years ago. For the last 2 decades, common uses of laser have been treatments of subjects with urolithiasis, bladder tumors, benign prostatic enlargement, lesions of the genitalia and urinary tract strictures. To evaluate laser application in urology in Iran, we reviewed all of the Iranian literature on the topic. This study was designed to retrieve all studies on laser application in urology in Iran, regardless of publication status or language, covering years 1990-2017. Twentysix articles were identified: 12 about urolithiasis, 8 about benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), 2 case reports, 1 paper about prostate cancer, 1 on female urethral stricture, 1 review and 1 basic sciences study. We conclude that the use of this technology has not yet found its position in Iran, especially in the field of urology. The main causes for it are the difficult accessibility and disturb of laser devices and its accessories, as well as the lack of adequate knowledge of the medical community about this modality. Meredithiella norrisii (Microascales, Ceratocystidaceae) is an ambrosia fungus carried in mycangia of the North American ambrosia beetle, Corthylus punctatissimus. Reports on the identity of the fungal symbionts of other species of Corthylus have been inconsistent. This study tested the hypothesis that Meredithiella spp. are the primary symbionts of Corthylus spp. Cultures and/or internal transcribed spacer (ITS) rDNA barcode sequences of Meredithiella spp. were obtained consistently from beetles and galleries of nine Corthylus spp. The ITS sequences of three putative species of Meredithiella were associated with C. consimilis and C. flagellifer in Mexico and C. calamarius in Costa Rica. The symbiont of C. columbianus in the USA was identified as M. norrisii. Two new Meredithiella spp. are described: M. fracta from C. papulans in Florida and Honduras, and M. guianensis associated with C. crassus and two unidentified Corthylus spp. in French Guyana. The Meredithiella spp. propagate in the mycangia of adult females by thallic-arthric growth, and the ambrosia growth in larval cradles comprises bead-like hyphal swellings or conidiophores, with or without terminal aleurioconidia. Bayesian phylogenetic analysis of a combined 18S and 28S nuc rDNA and translation elongation factor 1-α (TEF1-α) data set demonstrated that Meredithiella is a distinct monophyletic clade within the Ceratocystidaceae, but its phylogenetic placement with regard to the other ambrosial genera in the family remains ambiguous. The mycangia of C. punctatissimus and C. papulans are also compared using light microscopy and micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) imaging, revealing that they differ in both size and shape, but these differences may not correlate with different lineages of Meredithiella. Plants produce volatile chemical compounds that can negatively affect the preference (antixenosis) or the performance (antibiosis) of herbivorous insects. It is thought that these volatile compounds are used as cues by herbivorous insects to determine the suitability of the plant for egg deposition and, hence, offspring performance. Here, we investigated whether volatiles produced by tomato plants play a role in modulating the flight and oviposition behavior of mated Tuta absoluta females. We found that the behavioral steps displayed by mated females did not differ when they flew toward resistant or susceptible tomato genotypes, but they reached the susceptible genotypes faster than the resistant ones. Moreover, females landed more often and laid more eggs on the most susceptible genotype, the Santa Clara variety. Because this variety is known to be of high quality for the development of T. absoluta larvae, the female's decision to land and lay more eggs on this genotype seems to be mainly to maximize offspring performance. However, this is not so straightforward because the proportion of landings and eggs laid by T. absoluta on another susceptible genotype tested in this study was not significantly higher than on the resistant genotypes. Finally, although future studies are still needed, considering the antixenotic and antibiotic traits of the resistant genotypes studied here, they are likely to succeed if used in integrated pest management. An artificial diet sandwich, consisting of coffee berry borer artificial diet within two glass plates, has been developed to elucidate the behaviour of the coffee berry borer, an insect that in nature spends most of its life cycle inside the coffee berry. Various types of behaviour have been observed for the first time, including gallery construction, oviposition, gallery blocking, mating and most remarkably, subsocial tasks such as maternal sanitation and tending of eggs and larvae. This observational technique is a breakthrough for studies and manipulations of the coffee berry borer's social behaviour and could be applicable to other bark beetles, consequently yielding important insights into the origin of parental care in scolytine beetles. Insects find their oviposition sites using visual, contact and olfactory cues. Volatile stimuli emitted by an intact or herbivore-occupied host plant, non-host plants or the herbivore itself can all influence the final decision of females concerning where to lay eggs. Volatile substances surrounding larval excreted pellets, i.e., frass of the invasive box tree moth ( Cydalima perspectalis Walker) were collected, and the physiological activity was investigated by coupled gas chromatographic-electroantennographic detection. Based on structural elucidation, two aromatic derivates and one terpene alcohol were identified to be physiologically active on the antennae of the adults: guaiacol, (±)-linalool and veratrol. For all compounds, antennal responses were found to be dose dependent with EAG amplitudes being the highest at the highest dose levels. Females were also more sensitive to all three compounds compared to males. Single sensillum recordings on mated female antennae revealed that these frass compounds triggered 22% of the tested olfactory sensory neurons housed in trichoid sensilla. Behavioral bioassays indicated that the blend of these compounds had an oviposition-repellent effect on conspecific females: individuals laid significantly fewer eggs on boxwood plants equipped with dispensers loaded with the synthetic blend compared to those treated with natural frass or the control plants. This difference likely originated from the measured rapid changes in the volatile profile of larval excrement when exposed to the air at room temperature. INTRODUCTION: Youth rates of sexually transmitted infections in New Zealand are among the highest in the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development. Registered nurses employed in primary healthcare settings (PHC RNs) may lack confidence engaging with youth about their sexual health. AIM: To identify what facilitates PHC RNs to discuss sexual health with youth. METHODS: This descriptive study was undertaken in two phases. In phase one, 23 PHC RNs completed an online survey. Phase two followed up the survey with semi-structured interviews with seven PHC RNs. RESULTS: Most PHC RNs are female, aged between 40 and 60 years old and identify with New Zealand or other European ethnicity. Participants identified specific educational needs relating to youth sexual health that are not being met: legal and ethical issues (65%); cultural issues (65%); youth sexual (44%) and psychological (52%) development; and working with gay, lesbian, bisexual or transsexual youth (48%). Lack of time was cited as a barrier to engaging with youth about sexual health by 30% of the participants. Ongoing support practices such as regular debriefing, reflections of practice and case reviews with colleagues (74%); support from other sexual health providers (87%); and access to educational materials about youth sexual health aimed at health professionals (100%) were perceived to be useful to increase confidence in discussing sexual health with youth. DISCUSSION: The PHC RNs lacked knowledge and confidence engaging with youth about sexual health. PHC RNs need resourcing to provide culturally safe, effective sexual health care to youth. A computational algorithm for solving anelastic problems in finite deformations is introduced. The presented procedure, termed the Generalised Plasticity Algorithm (GPA) hereafter, takes inspiration from the Return Mapping Algorithm (RMA), which is typically employed to solve the Karush–Kuhn–Tucker (KKT) system arising in finite elastoplasticity, but aims to modify and extend the RMA to the case of more general flow rules and strain energy density functions as well as to non-classical formulations of elastoplasticity, in which the plastic variables are not treated as internal variables. To assess its reliability, the GPA is tested in two different contexts. First, it is used for solving two classical problems (a shear-compression test and the necking of a circular bar). In both cases, the GPA is compared with the RMA in terms of structural set-up, computational effort and flexibility, and its convergence is evaluated by solving several benchmarks. Some restrictions of the classical form of the RMA are pointed out, and it is shown how these can be overcome by adopting the proposed algorithm. Previous experience on host plants can modify insect feeding behavior. Because insect habituation and induction of preference to host plants are variable across species of plants and insects, it is necessary to investigate each insect-plant interaction to determine whether this phenomenon occurs or not in the system. In this study we investigated the potential occurrence of habituation and induction of preference in fall armyworm (FAW) Spodoptera frugiperda to soybean genotypes. Neonate FAW larvae reared on artificial diet were divided into four treatment groups and fed for one generation with either the resistant soybeans PI 227687 or IAC 100 or the susceptible soybeans BRS Valiosa RR or IGRA RA 626 RR. Biological parameters of FAW were recorded. Eggs obtained from FAW of each genotype group were separated, and the newly hatched larvae were fed on the same genotypes experienced by their parents for additional 8 days. FAW larval preference and leaf area consumed were evaluated in choice feeding assays with the four soybean genotypes within a 24-h period. Genotypes PI 227687 and IAC 100 negatively affected FAW development, demonstrating they are FAW-resistant. FAW larvae exposed to both resistant genotypes consumed more foliage of genotype IGRA RA 626 RR in the choice assays, whereas larvae reared on both susceptible genotypes did not show any preference. From our preliminary study, FAW does not show habituation and induction of preference toward the experienced soybean genotypes. Decalesides are a new class of natural insecticides which are toxic to insects by contact via the tarsal gustatory chemosensilla. The symptoms of their toxicity to insects and the rapid knockdown effect suggest neurotoxic action, but the precise mode of action and the molecular targets for decaleside action are not known. We have presented experimental evidence for the involvement of sodium pump inhibition in the insecticidal action of decaleside in the cockroach and housefly. The knockdown effect of decaleside is concomitant with the in vivo inhibition of Na+, K+ -ATPase in the head and thorax. The lack of insecticidal action by experimental ablation of tarsi or blocking the tarsal sites with paraffin correlated with lack of inhibition of Na+- K+ ATPase in vivo. Maltotriose, a trisaccharide, partially rescued the toxic action of decaleside as well as inhibition of the enzyme, suggesting the possible involvement of gustatory sugar receptors. In vitro studies with crude insect enzyme preparation and purified porcine Na+, K+ -ATPase showed that decaleside competitively inhibited the enzyme involving the ATP binding site. Our study shows that the insecticidal action of decaleside via the tarsal gustatory sites is causally linked to the inhibition of sodium pump which represents a unique mode of action. The precise target(s) for decaleside in the tarsal chemosensilla and the pathway linked to inhibition of sodium pump and the insecticidal action remain to be understood. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The behavioral response of the larval parasitoid Spintherus dubius (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) to volatile compounds derived from its Apion weevil hosts was investigated in two-choice bioassays. Odor source candidates were the larval and adult stages of weevils, clover flowers, and feces from adult weevils. Despite S. dubius being a larval parasitoid, the odor of weevil larvae isolated from the clover flowers was not attractive to female parasitoids. Surprisingly, S. dubius females were instead attracted by the odor from the feces of adult weevils. The female parasitoids were similarly attracted to the feces produced by the two main hosts, the red clover weevil ( A. trifolii) and the white clover weevil ( A. fulvipes) . Chemical analysis of the volatile composition of feces produced by the two hosts revealed qualitatively similar odor profiles, correlating with the observed attraction by the parasitoid towards both odor sources. Some of the identified volatile compounds are commonly present in clover plant headspace fractions and may function as a kairomone to facilitate orientation by S. dubius to Apion-infested clover flowers. Larval and adult weevils were not attractive for parasitoid females, whereas, for the white clover weevil-plant association, infested flowers were highly attractive. Skeletal muscle is the organ of locomotion, its optimal function is critical for athletic performance, and is also important for health due to its contribution to resting metabolic rate and as a site for glucose uptake and storage. Numerous endogenous and exogenous factors influence muscle mass. Much of what is currently known regarding muscle protein turnover is owed to the development and use of stable isotope tracers. Skeletal muscle mass is determined by the meal- and contraction-induced alterations of muscle protein synthesis and muscle protein breakdown. Increased loading as resistance training is the most potent nonpharmacological strategy by which skeletal muscle mass can be increased. Conversely, aging (sarcopenia) and muscle disuse lead to the development of anabolic resistance and contribute to the loss of skeletal muscle mass. Nascent omics-based technologies have significantly improved our understanding surrounding the regulation of skeletal muscle mass at the gene, transcript, and protein levels. Despite significant advances surrounding the mechanistic intricacies that underpin changes in skeletal muscle mass, these processes are complex, and more work is certainly needed. In this article, we provide an overview of the importance of skeletal muscle, describe the influence that resistance training, aging, and disuse exert on muscle protein turnover and the molecular regulatory processes that contribute to changes in muscle protein abundance. © 2021 American Physiological Society. The article focuses on Indian Psychiatric Society (IPS) had taken the lead in developing Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs) for psychiatrists since 2005. Topics include IPS had earlier published CPGs on Ethical and Legal issues in 2009, and the Guidelines had been well received and provided locally relevant suggestions for clinical practice.

Background Medicine shortages are an ongoing global problem. The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) dedicated a website for monitoring of medicine shortages in Australia in May 2014, as part of the Medicine Shortage Information Initiative. This study aimed to explore the views of pharmacists regarding medicine shortages in the community setting and the impact of the TGA website in Australia. Setting Community pharmacies in New South Wales, Australia. Method Twenty semi-structured interviews were conducted with community pharmacists. Data collected were analysed thematically utilising the framework analysis method. Main outcome measure Qualitative analysis conducted using the framework approach. Results Findings clearly indicated that medicine shortages were experienced on a regular basis, but most participants were unaware of the TGA website. Medicine shortages reportedly impacted both pharmacists and consumers; and various workarounds were undertaken to manage the issue. The "price disclosure policy" was found to be a prominent contributing factor in emerging shortages. Suggestions were made for ways to improve the growing occurrence of shortages. Conclusion Overall, the study found that there was a lack of familiarity with the TGA website, despite experiencing regular shortages of medicines in practice. Also highlighted, was the importance of pharmacists prioritising patient care over business decisions. To reduce prescribing of out-of-stock medicines notifying doctors about shortages was also considered important, to allow for early action to be taken at higher levels of the supply chain. Findings of this study may help direct future policy-making around the world, as medicine shortages is a problem shared by healthcare providers in most countries around the world.
