Abstract

We have investigated both the longitudinal wave velocity in a 2 dimensional (2D) model system and the propagation velocity of a cooperative motion found in our previous papers. The longitudinal wave velocity is about 12 σ1/τ, but the propagation velocity of a cooperative motion becomes near 3 σ1/τ. And the longitudinal wave velocity increases slightly according to increasing the temperature. On the other hand, the propagation velocity of a cooperative motion decreases according to increasing the temperature. Abstract

We present recent results on the hydrodynamic instability experiments on the HIPER (High Intensity Plasma Experimental Research) laser facility at Institute of Laser Engineering, Osaka University. We measured the Rayleigh-Taylor growth rate on the HIPER laser. Also measured were all parameters that determine the RT growth rate. We focused on the measurements of the ablation density of laser-irradiated targets, which had not been experimentally measured. The experimental results were compared with calculations with one dimensional simulation coupled with and without Fokker-Planck equation for electron heat transport. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The plant circadian clock controls various physiological phenomena that are important for adaptation to natural day-night cycles. Many components of the circadian clock have been identified in Arabidopsis thaliana, the model plant for molecular genetic studies. Recent studies revealed evolutionary conservation of clock components in green plants. Homologues of clock-related genes have been isolated from Lemna gibba and Lemna aequinoctialis, and it has been demonstrated that these homologues function in the clock system in a manner similar to their functioning in Arabidopsis. While clock components are widely conserved, circadian phenomena display diversity even within the Lemna genus. In order to survey the full extent of diversity in circadian rhythms among duckweed plants, we characterised the circadian rhythms of duckweed by employing a semi-transient bioluminescent reporter system. Using a particle bombardment method, circadian bioluminescent reporters were introduced into nine strains representing five duckweed species: Spirodela polyrhiza, Landoltia punctata, Lemna gibba, L. aequinoctialis and Wolffia columbiana. We then monitored luciferase (luc+) reporter activities driven by At CCA1, Zm UBQ1 or Ca MV35S promoters under entrainment and free-running conditions. Under entrainment, At CCA1::luc+ showed similar diurnal rhythms in all strains. This suggests that the mechanism of biological timing under day-night cycles is conserved throughout the evolution of duckweeds. Under free-running conditions, we observed circadian rhythms of At CCA1::luc+, Zm UBQ1::luc+ and Ca MV35S::luc+. These circadian rhythms showed diversity in period length and sustainability, suggesting that circadian clock mechanisms are somewhat diversified among duckweeds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We measured the spontaneous strainc/a-1 of the antiferrodistortive phase transition in the conductive strontium titanates SrTi1-xNbxO3withx= 0, 0.01, 0.02 and SrTiO3-δby means of synchrotron X-ray topography. We found that the substitution of Nb5+ions into SrTiO3led to the increase of the phase transition temperatureTaand the saturated spontaneous strain (c/a-1)s. The reduction of SrTiO3led, by contrast, to the decrease ofTaand (c/a-1)s. The relation betweenTaand (c/a-1)sof SrTi1-xNbxO3and SrTiO3-δcoincides with that of Sr1-xLaxTiO3. From the relation,Tais extrapolated to 61 K at (c/a-1)s= 0. The minimum value ofTaindicates that the conductive strontium titanates having the tolerance factorst≤ 1 + 1.1 × 10−2undergo the antiferrodistortive phase transition atTa≥ 61 K. 242. Evidence of Electron–Phonon Interaction in Al-Substituted Mg1− xAl xB2.

Abstract

Phonon density of states in Al substituted Mg1− xAl xB2 has been studied by means of inelastic neutron scattering experiments with pulsed neutron time-of-flight technique. Phonon dynamics have a significant role for realizing superconductivity in the recent discovered superconductor MgB2. We present a systematic investigation on generalized phonon density of states (PDOS) up to E = 120 meV on Al content of x = 0.1, 0.25, and 0.5. We have clearly observed a large effect on the PDOS by Al substitution; a large energy shift occurs around at 70 meV and 89 meV. We have also observed a visible increase of PDOS at a particular energy range below Tc. Those phonon states are related with E2g mode to be expected to have a strong coupling with the electron states at the Γ–A region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

244. Fungal and bacterial disease resistance in transgenic plants expressing human lysozyme.

Abstract

The human lysozyme gene, which is assembled by the stepwise ligation of chemically synthesized oligonucleotides, was introduced into tobacco ( Nicotiana tabacum cv `SR1') by the Agrobacterium-mediated method. The introduced human lysozyme gene was highly expressed under the control of the cauliflower mosaic virus 35S promoter, and the gene product accumulated in the transgenic tobacco plants. The transgenic tobacco plants showed enhanced resistance against the fungus Erysiphe cichoracearum – both conidia formation and mycelial growth were reduced, and the size of the colony was diminished. Microscopic observation revealed that the transgenic tobacco plants carried the resistant phenotype, analogous to that of the resistant cultivar `Kokubu' which had been selected by conventional breeding. Growth of the phytopathogenic bacterium Pseudomonas syringae pv. tabaci was also strongly retarded in the transgenic tobacco, and the chlorotic halo of the disease symptom was reduced to 17% of that observed in the wild-type tobacco. Thus, the introduction of a human lysozyme gene is an effective approach to protect crops against both fungal and bacterial diseases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Abstract We have performed powder X-ray diffraction of MgB2 superconductor between 10 and 300 K. Temperature dependence of integrated intensities of both (002) and (110) X-ray reflections shows a peak at around TC, superconducting transition temperature. The integrated intensity of the X-ray reflection is related to the phonon frequency through a Debye--Waller factor. Lattice parameters a and c show negative thermal expansions at low temperatures. The negative thermal expansion might be due to an electronic origin and not directly related to the superconducting transition.

Abstract

Up today the only probable scenario to mitigate a collision with new Near-Earth Objects of 1km-size consists of theirs deflection by a very high-energy explosion (100–1000 MT of TNT) at the distances from the Earth comparable with the sun-ward scale of magnetosphere. Since magnetosphere own magnetic energy is not more than 250MT, it means that a giant plasma cloud (of energy ∼100MT) released by such explosion may cause global and even catastrophic geoplasma disturbances. The magnitude and nature of them can't be predicted by existing 3D numerical codes in a full measure. The necessary data about the after-effects can be obtained mainly in simulation experiments on expansion of Laser-produced Plasma Clouds inside of laboratory model of magnetosphere. Since in case of near-Earth explosion plasma expansion will be sub-Alfvenic, as the first step the dynamic of plasma clouds in a vacuum dipole magnetic field have been studied experimentally1and the results obtained have been compared with MHD analytical model3and 3D/PIC-numerical simulation2. A preliminary analysis shows that initial evolution of plasma clouds can be satisfactorily described by MHD-based similarity criterion and scales.
