232. Adaptive fuzzy controller design for an air handling unit

Abstract

An adaptive control method based on a fuzzy state observer is designed for air handling unit (AHU) systems, where the intensity of humidity source and heat load are considered to be uncertain, and approximated by fuzzy logics. Besides, the supply air temperature is unmeasurable, which is observed by a state observer. To avoid the system equilibrium point offset, the prediction errors generated by the system and serial-parallel estimation models are introduced into the controller design based on backstepping. Finally, the superiority of proposed adaptive fuzzy controller is analyzed by simulation comparison with feedback linearization and PID controllers in two cases.

Abstract

The spatial distribution of reactive silica (RSi) and organic carbon (OC) in the Bohai Sea was determined on the basis of field measurements, and budgets were calculated with support from literature data. The riverine input, primary production and water exchange between the Bohai Sea and Yellow Sea have a strong effect on the distributions of RSi and OC, with particularly high contents in sediments in the estuarine and mud areas in the Bohai Sea. Silica preservation in the sediment is more efficient than that of carbon. Exchanges via the Bohai Strait result in a net export of RSi and OC for the Bohai Sea. Increasing riverine inputs of RSi in the Bohai Sea due to water and sediment regulation since 2002 have induced a 10% increase in primary production. As a result, RSi has declined due to enhanced diatom growth and sedimentation. The Bohai Sea has thus shifted from a nitrogen to a silica limited ecosystem.

Abstract

Hypoxic zones and oceanic deoxygenation are spreading worldwide due to anthropogenic activities and climate change, greatly affecting marine organisms exposed to lowered O 2. Yet, the effects of the lowered O 2 on phytoplankton are often neglected when studying O 2 effects as they are the O 2 producers. Here we showed that low O 2 (dissolved O 2 , 150 ± 10 μmol L−1) enhanced the growth of the marine diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana in limited light but reduced it in moderate to inhibitory light and that hypoxia (40 ± 7.5 μmol L−1) reduced its growth at any growth lights. Low O 2 and hypoxia decreased cellular chlorophyll a and carotenoid content under growth light from 30 to 400 µmol photons m−2 s−1, as well as photosynthetic efficiency (F V /F M). Such a decrease effect by low O 2 or hypoxia also occurred in the O 2 production by photosynthesis and the O 2 consumption by dark respiration, especially under moderate to inhibitory growth light. Malondialdehyde, a product of lipid peroxidation, increased by up to 200% under low O 2 , and by 400% under hypoxia at the highest light. The lowered O 2 mechanistically down-regulated the expression of proteins related to chlorophyll synthesis, light energy conversion and transfer, and carbon metabolism. In addition, we found that the lowered O 2 generally decreased the fatty acid content by more than 30%, along with the down-regulation of proteins related to the synthesis of these fatty acids and the elongation and desaturation of carbon chains. This suggests the change in the nutrition of marine grazers' food and thus the potential impacts on the food chains in increasingly deoxygenated/hypoxic coastal waters. Abstract

Rationale: Panax ginseng (PG) and American ginseng (AMG) are both medicinal plants of the Panax genus in the Acanthopanax family. Although PG and AMG have similar components of ginsenosides, there are many differences of their bioactivities. In this study, the biochemical mechanisms of different bioactivities of PG and AMG were explored by researching the differential metabolites in plasma after administration of each of PG and AMG. Methods: In order to explore the material basis of differential bioactivities, two groups of mice were administrated orally with PG and AMG, and the method of metabolomics was used to identify the differential metabolites in plasma. Then network pharmacology was used based on the differential metabolites. Afterward, the metabolite–target–pathway network of PG and AMG was constructed; thus the pathways related to different bioactivities were analyzed. Results: Through principal component analysis and orthogonal projections to latent structures discriminant analysis, there were 10 differential metabolites identified in the PG group and 8 differential metabolites identified in the AMG group. Based on network pharmacology, the differential metabolites were classified and related to differential bioactivities of PG and AMG. In the PG group, there were 6 metabolites related to aphrodisiac effect and exciting the nervous system, and 5 metabolites associated with raised blood pressure. In the AMG group, 5 metabolites were classified as having the effect of inhibiting the nervous system, and 6 metabolites were related to antihypertensive effect. Conclusions: This study explored the material basis of the differential biological activities between PG and AMG, which is significant for the research of PG and AMG use and to promote human health.
