OBJECTIVE NAVIGATE is a comprehensive treatment program for first episode psychosis developed and implemented in the US that has been found to be effective. The purpose of the present study was to describe the first initiative of NAVIGATE's implementation outside the US, and to present data collected in Israel from the first two clinics focusing on NAVIGATE clients' characteristics, components utilization and retrospective clinician ratings of change. METHODS Administrative data for 61 NAVIGATE clients in Israel and retrospective ratings of NAVIGATE clinicians were analysed. RESULTS The duration of untreated psychosis was 4.4 months (SD = 6.8). Clients were mostly referred to NAVIGATE from psychiatric hospitals (n = 29, 50.9%) and community mental health agencies (n = 20, 35.1%). The individualized resiliency training (IRT) component had the highest client utilization rate (n = 53, 98.1%) with a monthly average of M = 2.32 sessions (SD = 2.75). Clinicians' retrospective ratings indicated that 66% of the clients (n = 33) had improved in at least one life domain, with the most common improvement in employment (n = 28, 56%), recovery (n = 24, 50%), and symptoms severity (n = 23, 47%). CONCLUSIONS Our findings reveal that NAVIGATE can be implemented outside the US within a different social and cultural context and different mental health system. The utilization rates of the program components and clinicians' retrospective ratings indicated positive change among most of NAVIGATE clients, pointing to the potential value of NAVIGATE above and beyond different countries and health systems.

Self-determination Theory differentiates various types of motivation, each of which have different consequences for well-being and behavior. Despite broad agreement concerning the nature of different types of motivation, numerous scoring methods, each of which rely on different assumptions, are commonly practiced. These practices range from a relative autonomy index that collapses all types of motivation into a single index, higher-order models grouping subscales into a two-factor solution, to multi-factorial approaches examining all motivation types as separate constructs. Existing evidence has not empirically compared these methods or clearly favored the use of one over another. We review each method and further investigate the advantages and disadvantages of each approach by directly comparing a range of commonly utilized scoring methods, as well as recently developed methods across six independent samples from various life domains to determine their effectiveness. Results generally favor multidimensional methods (e.g., exploratory structural equation modeling, B-ESEM, and CFA) as more comprehensive scoring practices as they maximize construct relevant information. However, selection of an ideal method will rely on theoretical congruence between methodology and research questions.

This chapter presents a case study of the literacy practices of southern Sudanese refugee youth—the so-called “Lost Boys”—in Michigan. It illustrates just a complexity among Sudanese refugees to answer several questions, derived from Luke (2003), about literacy practices among the Sudanese refugees: What does literacy mean to the Sudanese refugees? Which life domains characterize literacy practices for Sudanese refugees? How are different languages used across and within these domains? and In what ways do school literacies align or fail to align with those used in the wider community?. According to one participant in this study, “Sudan has never been a peaceful country.” There have been many internal wars in the Sudan; the current civil war began in 1983 when the southern Sudanese organized an uprising against the northern-dominated Sudanese government. The current war is the result of centuries of deep ethnic and religious divisions.

Results with regard to impact on self-management and glycemic outcomes are limited. Motivation is an important factor for self-management. Based on self-determination theory, autonomy-supportive, person-centered, and collaborative communication by diabetes care providers is associated with better outcomes. PROMs can facilitate this conversation.SummaryUnderstanding of youth motivation for maintaining or improving self-management behaviors requires a person-centered approach. PROMs can be used to facilitate an autonomy-supportive and person-centered conversation in clinical care. The article outlines the predicting effects of the self-congruence, attachment, stress, anxiety, depression, and happiness, on flourishing. The differentiation of social roles and life domains is included as a supposed pathway to flourishing and well-being promotion. 359 volunteers completed self-congruence, stress, anxiety and depression, relationships, happiness, differentiation and flourishing self-reporting scales and incomplete sentences on the daily way they differentiate their life domains and social roles as a form of preventive and proactive coping. In the hierarchical model, the accounted flourishing dispersion is 84% with predictors’ differentiation, happiness, low depression and relationships avoidance. In addition, the main effect of differentiation on both flourishing and all its predictors is reported. This leads to the conclusion on the importance of interventions to equip individuals with good differentiation abilities throughout life cycle.

Procrastination refers as putting off an intended course of action voluntarily despite expecting to be worse off for the delay, ubiquitously causing troubles across life domains. Prior studies revealed the positive correlation between trait anxiety and procrastination. However, little was known about the neural substrates responsible for the relation between trait anxiety and procrastination. To address this issue, the current study explored the neural basis underlying how trait anxiety linked to procrastination using the voxel-based morphometry (VBM) method across two independent samples. In line with previous studies, the behavioral result confirmed that trait anxiety was positively correlated with procrastination (sample 1). The VBM analyses showed that trait anxiety and procrastination shared the common neural underpinnings in the right hippocampus (sample 1). To verify the reliability of results, the overlapping region in the right hippocampus was defined as a region of interest (ROI) to extract the GM volumes of this area in sample 2. Furthermore, the mediation analysis showed that the GM volumes in the overlapping region played a mediating role in the relationship between trait anxiety and procrastination (sample 2). These results suggested the shared anatomical structure in the right hippocampus, a region implicated in episodic prospection, could be responsible for how trait anxiety related to procrastination. Taken together, present findings yielded insights into the role of episodic prospection accounting for the relationship between trait anxiety and procrastination from a neural basis perspective.

In 2005, Robert Agnew published his book Why Criminals Offend in which he synthesized an array of theoretical predictors of crime and delinquency into a parsimonious integrated general theory. He argued that delinquency is influenced by mechanisms found in five distinct life domains: self, family, peer, school, and work. Using longitudinal data from South Korea, the current research tested the generalizability of Agnew’s theory by applying it to bullying and cyberbullying. Results from a negative binomial regression model provided mixed support for Agnew’s theory as a general theory of crime. The significant effects of life domains were found to differ across types of bullying.

Economic and social transformation of rural areas in Poland after 1990 reveals itself through disintegration of previous spatial order. Building a new pattern requires a vision, which would counteract complex causes of disintegration. The latter belong to institutional domain of planning strategies and the area of common practices. Therefore, agreement on aims and means between spatial policy strategies and tactics of space users would favour the protection and sustainable shaping of environmental resources. The attempt which will merge both aforementioned life domains may be successfully realized only within landscape and at the level of commune, where local development takes place. The article refers to symptoms and causes of deformations in rural landscapes. It describes landscape rurality as desired development vision and utility of landscape tools in space management of a small commune. The article defines the idea of public space in a landscape aspect and indicates directions and areas of explorations, which would need to be developed according to the suggested perspective.

The mid-career stage is marked by a wider diversity of roles and responsibility in work and non-work life domains. To attain career success, mid-career workers cannot solely depend on their organization for information, skills, and training. Integrating career construction (Savickas, 2002) and conservation of resources (Hobfoll, 1989) perspectives, we developed a model linking perceived organizational support (POS), perceived spousal support, career adaptability, and subjective and objective indicators of career success. We tested the model using a sample of 160 independent employee-supervisor dyads across three measurement periods over two years. Results revealed that (a) POS was indirectly related to both subjective and objective career success via career adaptability; (b) perceived spousal support was indirectly related to both subjective and objective career success via career adaptability; and (c) the conditional indirect effects of POS in predicting subjective and objective career success via career adaptability were stronger for employees with high as opposed to low levels of perceived spousal support. Implications for theory and practice are discussed.

Istovremeno vrlo popularan i metodološki kontroverzan konstrukt emocionalne inteligencije je dovođen u vezu sa velikim brojem relevantnih eksternih varijabli kada je u pitanju psihološko funk- cionisanje u različitim životnim domenima. Iako postoje teorijska razmatranja koja povezuju bavljenje sportom sa izraženošću emo- cionalne inteligencije, mali je broj empirijskih istraživanja te veze, a ona su pogotovo rijetka na našem podneblju i kada je u pitanju ado- lescentska dob. Cilj našeg istraživanja je bio ispitati da li bavljenje sportom na srednjoškolskom uzrastu ostvaruje relaciju sa emocio- nalnom inteligencijom koja je konceptualizovana i kao crta ličnosti i kao sposobnost. Na uzorku od 191 učenika srednje škole (od čega 61.1% ženskog pola, uzrasta od 14 do 19 godina) zadani su upitnik samoprocjene UEK45, koji ima trofaktorsku strukturu, te dva objek- tivna situaciona testa emocionalne inteligencije, STEU i STEM. Naši rezultati potvrđuju potrebu za diferencijacijom konstrukata koji se mjere upitnicima samoprocjene i objektivnim testovima. Nada- lje, ustanovljeno je da, čak i kada se kontrolišu efekti pola i godina starosti, sportisti postižu više rezultate na svim mjerama, ali je to pogotovo evidentno na objektivnim testovima. U radu diskutujemo moguća objašnjenja za dobijene razlike koje se očituju na hijerarhij- ski složenijim aspektima emocionalne inteligencije i ukazujemo na potrebu za multimetodskim pristupom kada su u pitanju naučna i stručna procjena emocionalnih kompetencija mladih sportista.

Information and communication technology (ICT) enables employees to seamlessly traverse work and life domains, and thus impacts employee work/life interactions. Employers today are mindful of employee work/life interactions as an important element in employee wellbeing. With ICT being an integral element of today’s workplace, the ICT implications on work/life interactions have great relevance for the employers and policymakers. Literature on ICT and work/life interactions have focused on the Western and/or developed countries. Considering the rapid adaptation of ICTs in developing countries, it is important to understand whether the effect of ICT use on work/life interactions is universal. This study examined the impact of cross-domain ICT use on individual work/life conflict using a sample of professionals/ managers from Sri Lanka. Next, the cognitive dissonance theory was used to examine whether individuals’ perception towards ICTs (positive or negative) has a moderating impact on the aforementioned relationship. The findings validated the literature by demonstrating that cross-domain ICT use positively relates to work/life conflict even in the Sri Lankan context. Next, the results empirically demonstrated that individuals with negative perception towards ICT tend to experience a stronger relationship between work ICT use beyond times and work-to-life conflict. The theoretical contribution together with the implications for employers, human resource practitioners and individuals are also discussed.

RESUMENLa regulacion integrada se ha mostrado como la regulacion motivacional con mayor poder predictivo sobre las conductas adaptativas en diferentes ambitos de la vida, sin embargo, aun no ha sido estudiada en el contexto educativo. El objetivo de este estudio fue incorporar la medida de la regulacion integrada a la Escala de Motivacion Educativa y observar las propiedades psicometricas de este instrumento. Participaron en el estudio 333 universitarios del area de Educacion Fisica de la Universidad Federal do Espirito Santo/ Brasil. El analisis factorial confirmatorio mostro indices de ajuste aceptables para el modelo de ocho factores correlacionados. Los resultados del analisis de regresion mostraron que la regulacion integrada fue la variable que mejor predijo la intencion de ser profesor. ABSTRACTIntegrated regulation has been showed as the motivational regulation with the highest predictive power on adaptive behaviours in different life domains; however, it has not been examined in the educational context yet. The purpose of this study was to incorporate the assessment of integrated regulation to the Academic Motivation Scale in the initial training of Physical Education teachers in Brazil and examine the psychometric properties of this instrument. There were 333 undergraduate participants from the bachelor degree of Physical Education, Federal University of Espirito Santo/ Brazil. Confirmatory factor analysis showed acceptable fit indices for the eight-factor correlated structure. The results of the regression analysis showed that the variable integrated regulation was the strongest predictor of the intention to become a teacher. Purpose The reintegration of high-profile ex-offenders—including homicide offenders, pedophiles, and terrorists—frequently receives great political and public attention. This raises several important questions: how do such offenders reintegrate into society after their release? What is the impact of their prison sentence and media attention on life domains post-release? And, given their presence in the public eye, how do current life course theories account for desistance among this special group? Methods Based on in-depth life course interviews with ten Dutch high-profile ex-offenders and interviews with 17 professionals involved in their reintegration, this study seeks to address a significant gap in academic literature on the role of public attention on reentry and desistance. Results While none of the subjects reengaged in criminal behavior, all of them significantly struggled in the domains of family relations, parenthood, intimate partner relationships, employment, and housing post-release. This poses challenges in terms of explaining their desistance through life course theory alone. They are frequently in the public eye, which—combined with strict supervision—inhibits them from rebuilding relationships that may act as informal social controls. Conclusions Findings emphasize the significance of the broader social context of high-profile offenders as well as factors such as time and age, for gaining an understanding of their lived experiences and desistance.

Background: Recent studies have suggested a decline in subjective well-being after the birth of a first child. Yet parents' subjective well-being is, in general, linked positively to wanting and to having additional children. Objective: The paper addresses the question of whether new parents' satisfaction with their overall life and several specific life spheres modifies their expectations about having a second, or further, child. Methods: Relying on twelve waves of the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia panel survey (2001-2012), we apply piecewise growth models to a sample of individuals in couples who experience parenthood for the first time. We model, separately by gender, the relationship between satisfaction in seventeen life domains, overall life satisfaction, and fertility expectations during the first three years following the birth of a first child. Results: Results suggest that a decline in new parents' life satisfaction, overall and in different life domains, is associated with a significant decline in fertility expectations. The most important domains are family, social relationship, and work, although with differences by gender. In fact, mothers' fertility expectations are positively associated with their satisfaction with career prospects and with their work-family balance, whereas, for fathers, fertility expectations are positively associated with their financial situation. Contribution: Our study provides strong evidence that several life domains - and new parents' changes in satisfaction with regard to them - are important in elucidating the mechanism linking fertility expectations and the first child.

Little research exists that explores which domains of life satisfaction contributed to life satisfaction among Korean older adults with a physical disability. The purpose of this study was to investigate which domains of life satisfaction predicted life satisfaction by the identified different age groups among Korean older adults with a physical disability. This study analyzed the Panel Survey of Employment for the Disabled (PSED) collected in 2015 in Korea. A total of 2331 participants were used and examined their socio-demographic status, the satisfaction of life domains (social, health, finance, leisure, work and marital), and the overall life satisfaction. The results show that marital and employment statuses play an important role in promoting the overall life satisfaction for adults and older adults with a physical disability. In addition, this study suggests that the social and leisure satisfaction of an individual are the major contribution to life satisfaction among older adults (aged 55 and over) who have a physical disability.

This paper examines the association between education and subjective wellbeing. The evidence on this relationship is scarce, inconsistent and poorly understood, and reports of a negative association are common. Such results may appear counter-intuitive, but are in fact consistent with the idea that education is associated with higher expectations with respect to life circumstances. Consequently, education may be associated with greater subjective wellbeing only insofar as the ability to meet (or exceed) expectations is improved. This paper uses panel data from the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) Survey to evaluate the evidence for differences in reference points across education levels, and to determine the overall association between education and subjective wellbeing. The results of the analysis confirm moderate rightward drifts across education levels for satisfaction with life in general, which are ‘neutralised’ by observed differences in actual circumstances. Other patterns emerge within specific life domains. Positive overall associations are observed for satisfaction with financial circumstances and health, while negative overall associations are observed for satisfaction with work and the amount of leisure time.

Previous studies have indicated that both social and leisure contexts appear to lessen the discrepancy between ideal and actual affective states. However, research using the experience sampling method (ESM) to investigate relationships among ideal-actual affect discrepancies, leisure participation, and social contexts is rare. Therefore, the purpose of our ESM study was to examine the discrepancies between ideal and actual affect in social contexts (i.e., being alone vs. with others) and life domains (i.e., leisure vs. non-leisure). Hierarchical linear modelling results indicated that compared to non-leisure/alone contexts: (a) the discrepancies in high-arousal positive and low-arousal negative affect were minimized in non-leisure/social, leisure/alone, and social/leisure contexts; (b) the discrepancy in low-arousal positive affect was minimized only in leisure/alone contexts; and (c) the discrepancies in high-arousal negative affect were not minimized in any contexts. These results suggest that leisure can be a powerful factor in minimizing certain actual-ideal affect discrepancies; however, a fuller understanding of when these discrepancies are minimized requires taking social contexts into account as well.

An internal locus of control has benefits to individuals across multiple life domains, but little is known about associations between career locus of control (CLOC) and adjustment outcomes for adolescents with disabilities or at risk of academic failure. This exploratory study used data from 252 high school students to examine associations between CLOC and indicators of school- and career-related adjustment for high-need youth. Findings indicated that an internal CLOC contributed significantly to explaining variances in school bonding, engagement, career self-efficacy, and outcome expectations. Results also showed that adolescent girls with disabilities scored higher on external CLOC compared to boys with disabilities and boys and girls without disabilities. However, there were no moderation effects of ability status or gender on the strengths of CLOC and adjustment associations. Implications for research and practice were discussed in the context of study limitations.

Future perceptions consist of an individual’s ambition, view of future events, and plan for life domains. Such perceptions can predict and shape a person’s career development and motivate to pursue and achieve goals in different life roles. Research on emerging adults’ perceptions has important implications for career professionals assisting this population. In this study, the authors investigated the future perceptions of 49 U.S. and 39 Israeli emerging adult university males using thematic analysis. Participants’ responses represented an array of topics and were grouped into the following themes: (a) work, (b) family and relationships, (c) education, (d) material and monetary assets, (e) location, (f) leisure, and (g) general quality of life. Results suggested that culture could be important in how emerging adult males envision their future lives and roles. Recommendations for how career educators and counselors can implement the findings in their work with U.S. and Israeli college students are discussed.

Stemming from the work of Schreck (1999), criminological frameworks have increasingly been reframed to explore victimization experiences. Given developmental and situational changes over time, Agnew’s integrated theory of crime and delinquency provides a potentially profitable framework for explaining victimization that has remained relatively unexplored. To address this gap, the current study investigated whether contemporaneous and lagged effects of life domains outlined within the theory were predictive of violent victimization. Using multiple waves of data from the Project on Human Development in Chicago Neighborhoods Longitudinal Cohort Study (PHDCN-LCS), support was obtained for peer domain factors, involvement in offending, and prior victimization. Implications for crime prevention in the form of interrupting the cycle of violence and future directions for testing victimization theory are discussed.

Mental health and substance use disorders co-occur frequently, and are associated with poorer outcomes in life domains including housing, employment, health, and recovery. Finding evidence-based interventions for engagement and recovery can be a challenge for practitioners and organizations, as it involves accepting new interventions, and then implementing and measuring the results. However, practitioners frequently use their opinions or non-generalizable experiences rather than evidence-based findings to guide their practice. Medication-assisted therapy programs, especially for individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders, is an area of treatment where there are solid evidence-based outcome findings and where, nonetheless, many practitioners continue to use less-, or non-effective treatment approaches. Conflict between groups of staff using two different approaches can have serious negative impact on treatment outcome. These can be effectively addressed through a combination of education and interventions aimed at resolving intra-staff conflict.

Special interests form part of the core features of autism. However, to date there has been limited research focusing on the role of special interests in the lives of autistic adults. This study surveyed autistic adults on their special interest topics, intensity, and motivation. It also assessed the relationship between special interests and a range of quality of life measures including subjective wellbeing and domain specific life satisfaction. About two thirds of the sample reported having a special interest, with relatively more males reporting a special interest than females. Special interest topics included computers, autism, music, nature and gardening. Most autistic adults engaged in more than one special interest, highlighting that these interests may not be as narrow as previously described. There were no differences in subjective wellbeing between autistic adults with and without special interests. However, for autistic adults who did have special interests, motivation for engaging in special interests was associated with increased subjective wellbeing. This indicates that motivation may play an important role in our understanding of special interests in autism. Special interests had a positive impact on autistic adults and were associated with higher subjective wellbeing and satisfaction across specific life domains including social contact and leisure. However, a very high intensity of engagement with special interests was negatively related to wellbeing. Combined, these findings have important implications for the role of special interests in the lives of autistic adults. Lay summary Autistic adults reported having special interests in a range of topics, including computers, music, autism, nature and gardening. Special interests were associated with a number of positive outcomes for autistic adults. Very high intensity of engagement with special interests was related to lower levels of wellbeing. This highlights the important role that special interests play in the lives of autistic adults.

There is still much to learn about how aspects of the ecology of homelessness shape homeless adults' recovery experiences. In the present mixed-methods study, the relationship of service providers' work-related values to their service users' recovery experiences in the microsystem of homelessness were examined. Service providers completed semi-structured qualitative interviews about their service users, daily work activities, and work-related goals. At three time points, their service users completed quantitative measures of choice, mastery, and recovery in four life domains: physical health, psychiatric symptoms, substance use, and community integration. Service providers' interview transcripts were coded for three indicators of values: assumptions, actions, and end-states. Summative Content Analysis was used to transform qualitative codes into numeric data so they could be used to predict service users' recovery. In a series of growth curve models, the extent to which service providers' end-state values, as an indicator of consumer-led values, was shown to indirectly predict service users' recovery experiences, through their perceived choice and mastery. Findings confirm that providers' values are an important influence on service users' recovery. Results are discussed in terms of their implications for recovery-oriented theory and practice.

Intelligence has been linked with success across a wide array of life domains. To date, however, relatively little research has examined whether intelligence may predict criminal success—that is, engaging in criminal behaviors, but escaping detection and arrest. The current study addresses this gap in the literature by examining the associations among verbal intelligence, criminal involvement, and criminal justice processing (i.e., arrest) using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health). Our findings reveal that verbal intelligence is associated with criminal justice processing, wherein individuals with higher verbal intelligence scores are more likely to avoid arrest for criminal behavior when compared with individuals with comparatively lower verbal intelligence scores. We discuss the implications of these findings for future research.

Youths who have spent time in residential care may experience difficulties when making the transition to adulthood. This study examines adult outcomes of youths (N=251) who spent time in a Dutch judicial treatment institution. Moreover, the study investigates to what extent background characteristics and patterns in adult criminal behaviour are related to outcomes in adulthood. The study uses data from the 17up study, a longitudinal study following institutionalised youths into adulthood. Information on background characteristics is available from the youths’ treatment files. Outcomes in a variety of life domains, including the domains of housing, employment, family formation and health, have been assessed at a follow-up interview with respondents when they were, on average, 34 years old. Official data on criminal behaviour is used to reconstruct respondents’ criminal careers. The findings show that many young people who were placed in a judicial treatment institution during their youth experience difficulties in conventional life domains in adulthood, in particular in the areas of employment, mental health, and alcohol and drug abuse. Furthermore, results from a series of regression analyses and nonlinear canonical correlation analyses suggest that in general, those with chronic involvement in criminal behaviour are more likely to experience problems in multiple adult life domains. Most background characteristics are unrelated to adult outcomes. Therefore, the findings indicate that among youths with a history of institutionalisation, negative outcomes in adulthood are not so much predicted by childhood risk factors, but more so by criminal involvement in adulthood.

Background and objectives: Despite a generally good prognosis, testicular cancer can be a life-altering event. We explored perceived positive and negative life changes after testicular cancer in terms of frequency, demographic and disease-related predictors, and associations with depression and anxiety. Materials and methods: All testicular cancer survivors receiving follow-up care at two specialized outpatient treatment facilities were approached at follow-up visits or via mail. We assessed a total of N = 164 patients (66% participation rate, mean time since diagnosis: 11.6 years, SD = 7.4) by the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI, modified version assessing positive and negative changes for each of 21 items), Patient-Health-Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), and Generalized-Anxiety-Disorder-Scale-7 (GAD-7). We conducted controlled multivariate regression analyses. Results: Most survivors (87%) reported at least one positive change (mean number: 7.2, SD = 5.0, possible range: 0–21). The most frequent perceived positive changes were greater appreciation of life (62%), changed priorities in life (62%), and ability rely on others (51%). At least one negative change was perceived by 33% (mean number of changes: 1.1, SD = 2.5). Negative changes were most frequent for decreases in self-reliance (14%), personal strength (11%), and ability to express emotions (9%). A higher socioeconomic status was associated with more positive changes (β = 0.25, 95% CI 0.08 to 0.42), no other association with demographic and disease-related predictors emerged. While positive life changes were not associated with depression (β = −0.05, 95% CI −0.17 to 0.07) and anxiety (β = 0.00, 95% CI −0.13 to 0.13), more negative life changes were significantly associated with higher depression (β = 0.15, 95% CI −0.03 to 0.27) and anxiety (β = 0.23, 95% CI 0.11 to 0.36). There was no significant interaction of positive and negative changes on depression or anxiety. Conclusions: Although positive life changes after testicular cancer are common, a significant number of survivors perceive negative changes in life domains that have been primarily investigated in terms of personal growth. Early identification of and psychosocial support for patients who perceive predominantly negative changes may contribute to prevention of prolonged symptoms of anxiety and depression.

The present study examined the contents of future hopes and fears among Chinese adolescents left behind by one or both of their rural-to-urban migrant parents compared to those from rural and urban nonmigrant families. Data from 1083 participants (50.2% boys; Mage = 13.50 years; SD = 1.06) indicated that adolescents reported future hopes and fears in a variety of life domains, including future education, academics, occupation, marriage and family, parents' and relatives' wellbeing, interpersonal relationships, leisure activities, wealth and self-related issues. Adolescents from both-parent-migrant families reported more hopes and fears for interpersonal relationships and more fears for parents' and relatives' wellbeing than other adolescents. Moreover, boys from migrant families reported more hopes for occupation and fewer hopes for interpersonal relationships than girls from migrant families, whereas no gender differences were found among adolescents from nonmigrant families. These results suggest the important roles of parental migration in adolescents' future thinking.

Based upon conservation of resources theory, this study is the first to explore (1) the relations between life-domain support received by internationally mobile employees (IMEs) from their organization, supervisors, coworkers, and family and friends and their life-domain conflicts and enrichments in two directions: work life → personal life (WL → PL) and personal life → work life (PL → WL) and (2) whether these links are different between assigned expatriates (AEs) and self-initiated expatriates (SIEs). The questionnaire data were collected from 182 SIEs and 102 AEs. Results from multivariate analyses show that (1) the more IMEs perceive receiving life-domain support from their family and friends and their organization, the less they report life-domain conflicts and (2) the more IMEs perceive receiving life-domain support from their coworkers, the more they report life-domain enrichments. Finally, it appears that AEs' perceived life-domain organizational support is positively related to their perceived WL → PL enrichments and that SIEs' perceived life-domain coworker support is negatively related to their life-domain conflicts in both directions.

Abstract. Changes in technology, economy, and demography have generated today’s mobile and flexible workplace. These aspects, while leading to more permeable boundaries, render it more difficult to manage the boundaries between life domains. We conducted a quasi-experimental study to evaluate the effects of an intervention teaching mindfulness as a cognitive–emotional segmentation strategy to promote well-being. In all, 191 employees participated in the 3-week online self-training intervention and completed the preintervention–postintervention and follow-up questionnaires. As expected, the experimental group participants compared to the control group participants experienced significantly less emotional exhaustion and negative affect, and significantly more life satisfaction. Moreover, we could show that boundary management competency can be improved with an online-based self-training intervention.

Although the benefits of mentoring for protégés’ career-related outcomes have been largely confirmed, little research has examined whether this benefit can extend to the protégés’ life domains outside of work. In this study, we investigate the impact of the extent of workplace mentoring support on protégés’ subjective well-being (SWB). Based on data that were collected from a two-wave survey of 253 protégés in ongoing mentoring programs in China, the results showed that the extent of the mentoring support was significantly related to the protégés’ SWB (i.e., satisfaction with life, positive affect, and negative affect) through their psychological safety. Furthermore, the perceived mentor status of protégés moderated the relationship between the extent of mentoring support and the protégés’ psychological safety, such that the relationship was stronger when the perceived mentor status was higher rather than lower. The theoretical and managerial implications of our findings are also discussed.

This paper lies within the debate on GDP and beyond and provides an empirical assessment of the Italian equitable and sustainable well-being (BES) as a composite measure of multidimensional well-being. From a policy perspective, the goal is to deliver a reading of the Italian BES able to shed light on its usability. The aim is to offer a suitable method for making the information included in the BES more viable for policy design. To this end, the paper is grounded in an interpretation of the Italian BES through the lens of the capability approach and investigates the relations among BES indicators and life domains. The empirical assessment uses Italian data from the national survey “Aspects of daily life” and applies the Structural Equation Model to estimate several life capabilities and their causal path. Outcomes show the interrelated nature of multi-dimensional well-being and prove the role of exogenous causes in the determination of capabilities. Moreover, the paper provides a final ranking analysis where Italian regions are compared based on their position per capability and income performance. Results confirm, on one hand, the disparity of income and well-being measurements and the importance of multidimensional assessment for human development and, on the other, the importance of focusing on the single components of multidimensional well-being and their interconnections.

Sex-trafficking experiences and the psychological traumas generated often inspire profound, behavioral-life changes, which are explored in this quantitative study. Correlations between posttraumatic growth (PTG) and quality of life (QOL) were investigated with (N = 109) females, ages 18–62 years old and sex trafficked as youth or adults in the United States. Recruitment occurred using random and snowball sampling from sexual-assault agencies in the United States. This study used the Relative Acculturation Extended Model to capture Black Americans’ (N = 173) perceptions of and preferences for African immigrant acculturation to the Black American host culture in seven life domains (i.e., social relationships, values, spending, family dynamic, group educational concern, race relations, and political engagement). Participants also had the opportunity to provide qualitative statements to elaborate on their survey responses. Contrary to existing literature, survey analyses showed that Black Americans generally perceived African immigrants as integrated. More than half of the domains were found to be under the separation acculturation strategy. In addition, integration was the strategy most preferred. Gender differences in subjective well-being (SWB) are a common finding in studies of children, but the nature, causes and effects of these differences remain unclear. This article draws on data from the Children's Worlds study, an international survey of child well-being across countries, to examine the structure of SWB drawing on different life domains, and comparing the effects of these domains on SWB for boys and girls. Structural equation modelling is used to examine differences between 12 year old boys and girls who reported low subjective well-being (bottom 25% of the sample). Findings reveal that the structure of SWB is comparable across the genders; girls' SWB was lower than boys'; and different domains of SWB vary in their importance for boys and girls. Specifically, girls' SWB appears to be more driven by relational factors, whilst boys' SWB is more driven by perceived academic achievement.

Despite the increased interest in recent decades in the study of children's subjective well-being (SWB), studies in this area are still rare, especially cross-national large-scale surveys that study SWB of children from different nations and cultures. Only, few studies addressed the aspect of religion in cross cultural studies on children's SWB. The present study is among the first to investigate how children from different religion groups evaluate their SWB, utilizing the Children's Worlds survey second wave data set with questionnaires from over 38,000 children aged 10–12 from 16 countries around the world. We divided the full sample of children into six religion groups by the dominant religion in each country: Christian from Western countries (including Protestant and Catholic), Eastern Christians (Orthodox Christian), Jews, Muslims, Hindus, and Asian-Christians/Buddhists. Our descriptive results indicate significant variations in children's SWB between different religion groups. We found that Jews, Muslims, and Eastern Christian children tend to be more satisfied with life as a whole as well as with different aspects of life (family, friends and self), and that Hindu and Asian-Christian/Buddhist children tend to be less happy and less satisfied. Yet, variations tests as well as regressions analysis indicates that religion explains only very little of the variance. Significant religion differences in the strength of the correlations between children's satisfaction with different life domains and between their satisfactions with their life as a whole were observed as well. Stronger correlations appeared among Asian-Christian/Buddhist children, and the weaker correlations were among Hindu children. Based on these results we conclude that religion structures the context in which children's SWB is formed. And that the SWB of children is being shaped differently in various religion cultures.

El estudio compara las prácticas de manejo de riesgos de salud de 42 hogares de ingresos medios de Chile y Costa Rica a través de tres entrevistas semi-estructuradas, realizadas entre 2008 y 2013, y aporta la mirada subjetiva de las experiencias relacionadas con la salud. En el mo­delo segmentado de asistencia sanitaria de Chile, la capacidad de manejo de los riesgos se relacio­na con la situación económica del hogar y el tipo de problemas de salud; los hogares se perciben frágiles y propensos a arriesgar en otros ámbitos de bienestar. En el modelo de salud unificado de Costa Rica, ésta se protege independientemente de los recursos y problemas sanitarios. La limi­tación del estudio radica en la diversidad de la muestra en relación al tamaño. The study compares the way 42 middle-income households from Chile and Costa Rica deal with health problems by means of three semi-structured interviews from 2008 to 2013. It contributes to the subjective perspective of health experiences. Results show that in Chile’s segmented health-care model, economic resources and type of health problems impact on the ability to deal with health risks leading to feelings of insecurity and the risk of spillovers to other life domains. Costa Rica’s unified health-care model protects this ability independent of resources and health problem. The weakness is the diversity of the sample in relation to its size.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of information and communication technology (ICT) use for employees by exploring affective ICT events and their relation to employee recovery. We conducted two daily diary studies with knowledge workers in Germany. In study 1 (N = 153), we followed a qualitative approach by developing a taxonomy of negative and positive ICT events at work and at home. We found 11 negative (e.g., multichannel use, work e-mails in the evening) and 10 positive ICT event clusters (e.g., utilizing idle times, availability at home). In study 2 (N = 154), we examined how the occurrence of ICT-related events in the evening is related to detachment from work and sleep quality using a multilevel design. Study 2 provided a differentiated picture of relationships between evening ICT events and recovery. Overall, results indicate that work-related ICT events in the evening—even in cases where they are appraised as positive—are detrimental for employee recovery. Our study contributes to the refinement of the operationalization of ICT use for future analyses of ICT impacts and sheds light on the differential effects of specific types of ICT events. ICT use conceptualized as the occurrence of affective events helps to advance our understanding of the diversity of ICT-related experiences. The practicum (or professional experience) is an entrenched feature of initial teacher education programs. In recent years, there has been an emphasis on improving the quality of practicum experiences in both academic research (e.g. Grudnoff & Williams, 2010; Lawson, Cakmak, Gunduz & Busher, 2015) and in teacher education policy (e.g. TEMAG, 2014). However, while the practicum is generally considered by participants to be one of the most influential experiences in their preservice teacher education (Busher, Gunduz, Cakmak, & Lawson, 2015) it is also recognised as being one of the most stressful (Gardner, 2010). As a result, there is an increasing tendency in recent work to explore the practicum through the eyes and experiences of participants (Buckworth, 2017; Grant-Smith & Gillett-Swan, 2017). However, despite increasing recognition of the personal factors that can influence experiences of practicum, and the impact that of practicum participation can exert on other life domains and commitments, these ideas are rarely centred in discussions of practicum (Grant-Smith, Gillett-Swan & Chapman, 2016).
