The North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) index is often characterized by independent positive and negative NAO events with a characteristic spatial pattern and a typical lifetime of around 1 week. These events are separated by periods of near-neutral NAO conditions. Here, we challenge this view by showing in reanalysis and observed data that the strength and spatial shape of NAO events depends on the NAO index prior to the window of 1 week and this dependency is most pronounced for negative NAO events. The influence is seen in the mean sea level pressure, and in other important features, including blocking frequency and jet stream characteristics, and also in air surface temperature and precipitation in parts of Europe. This new appreciation is important for efforts to improve methods for subseasonal-to-seasonal predictions of NAO.

- Abstract
Objective. To understand subjectivity as linking self-organization with families and adolescents in vulnerability/ generativity contexts, enabling the emergence of autonomy and differentiation with gender perspective as diversity. Methodology. Qualitative approach with complex-systematic orientation. Participants: 19 teenagers, their families and IELCO institution. Place Ciudad Bolivar, Bogotá, Colombia. Results and conclusions. Understanding the linking dynamics that limit and enhance subjectivity as self-organization, allowing the design of a clinical - social interventional proposal in which conversational scenarios are rituals for change, and self-reference is a creative and reflexive driving force of experience and context. The main finding is the configuration of change by mobilizing ritualization in adolescentfamily bonds and its sustainability from the re-signification processes, emphasized in emerging narratives, thus contributing, from clinical psychology interventions with adolescents and families, to the mental health and family development in clinical, community and institutional contexts. In this paper, the properties of the Kauffman bracket skein module (KBSM) of are investigated. Links in lens spaces are represented both through band and disk diagrams. The possibility to transform between the diagrams enables us to compute the KBSM on an interesting class of examples consisting of inequivalent links with equivalent lifts in the -sphere. The computations show that the KBSM is an essential invariant, that is, it may take different values on links with equivalent lifts. We also show how the invariant is related to the Kauffman bracket of the lift in the -sphere. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper examines the links between tariff protection and wage protection. These two areas of regulation were linked politically by a coalition of the Protectionist Party and the Labour Party which supported both policies together. In the regulatory systems themselves there were links through New Protection Policy and the major influence it had on the hugely important Harvester Judgment of the Court of Conciliation and Arbitration. By 1910, these developments had laid down the foundations of Australian tariff policy and labour market regulation which became among the most highly regulated markets in the non-communist world for many decades. - Abstract
The North-Central region and South-Central coast have many similarities to develop sea and island tourism, associated with their unique cultural heritages and diverse ecosystems. In the past, the Central coast region suffered serious damages caused by natural disasters and floods; thus, people's lives were very difficult there. Despite these hardships, in the recent years, this area has been gradually improving by the strong investment. Tourism development has stimulated the social-economic growth in many ways. However, the tourism development of the North-Central and South-Central coast in reality still does not commensurate with its potential because the products and services are not comprehensive; the state's management in tourism is not effective, lacks overall vision as well as tourism development in linking regional areas and inter-regional areas. Therefore, the main objective of the tourism development at the North-Central and South-Central coast is to build synchronized products and service systems and construct inter-regional tourism routes. By doing so, the tourism itself can contribute to promoting the value of heritage systems, optimizing the exploitation of tourism resources as well as orienting sustainable tourism development. In this paper, we study unitary braid group representations associated with Majorana fermions. Majorana fermions are represented by Majorana operators, elements of a Clifford algebra. The paper proves a general result about braid group representations associated with Clifford algebras and compares this result with the Ivanov braiding associated with Majorana operators and with other braiding representations associated with Majorana fermions such as the Fibonacci model for universal topological quantum computing. DISPERSAL (Ecology) , *ECOLOGY , *FRESH water , *TRANSPORTATION geography , *BIOTIC communities - Abstract
Dispersal is one of the key mechanisms affecting the distribution of individuals, populations, and communities in nature. Despite advances in the study of single species, it has been notoriously difficult to account for dispersal in multispecies metacommunities, where it potentially has strong effects on community structure beyond those of local environmental conditions. Dispersal should thus be directly integrated in both basic and applied research by using proxies. Here, we review the use of proxies in the current metacommunity research, suggest new proxies, and discuss how proxies could be used in community modelling, particularly in freshwater systems. We suggest that while traditional proxies may still be useful, proxies formerly utilized in transport geography may provide useful novel insights into the structuring of biological communities in freshwater systems. We also suggest that understanding the utility of such proxies for dispersal in metacommunities is highly important for many applied fields such as freshwater bioassessment, conservation planning, and recolonization research in the context of restoration ecology. These research fields have often ignored spatial dynamics and focused mostly on local environmental conditions and changes therein. Yet, the conclusions of these applied studies may change considerably if dispersal is taken into account. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Networks-on-Chip (NoCs) are recognized as the solution to address the communication bottleneck in a Multi-processor System-on-Chip (MPSoC). As NoCs represent a significant part of system consumption, MPSoC designers expect accurate power models in order to produce energy efficient systems. Nowadays, NoC simulators rely on power models that integrate link models without crosstalk modeling. In this study, we present Noxim-XT, a NoC simulator based on Noxim that embeds a link power model with crosstalk modeling. We show that the crosstalk effect has a deep impact on NoC energy consumption since our results demonstrate that classical models generate errors up to 45.5% on the whole NoC energy consumption estimation. In addition, this tool is able to run application-based traffic and we show that under application-based traffics, the energy estimation made by classical models overestimates the NoC energy consumption by up to 50%. - Abstract
Mad weave (anyam gila) is a type of basketry originating in Indonesia. There is very little literature on the technique, and it is not widely used, but it produces a very pleasing fabric. It has atriaxialstructure (the weaving strands are in three directions in contrast to the more usual warp and weft structure), and as a consequence it belongs to symmetry group p6 (or632in orbifold notation), making it particularly suitable for the construction of baskets, including closed polyhedral shapes, with triangular and hexagonal faces. Polyhedral baskets constructed with a small number of strands can be created if the edges do not lie along strand directions. The structure will decompose in various ways into combinations of different substructures, in particular the more common open hexagonal weave (orkagome) or its variants. A limited range of patterns, related to the possible decompositions, can be created by the use of different coloured strands. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Since the democratic transition of 1994, the promotion of the small, medium and micro-enterprise (SMME) economy has been a core focus of South African government policy. With high levels of unemployment and poverty in urban areas, the impact of this policy intervention is most critical for city development. Given South Africa’s chequered history, the national government’s focus is on transforming the prospects for enterprises owned by black South Africans, who were disadvantaged under apartheid. This article examines the range of contemporary policy initiatives to address business constraints on market access and catalyse new market opportunities for black-owned enterprises in urban South Africa. The article concentrates on two themes: 1) building links into private sector supply chains, especially through supplier diversity, and 2) building links into public sector markets through public procurement. It is shown that current policy directions recognise that the national government has a limited capacity to implement SMME improvement and build competitive black-owned SMMEs by itself, which has prompted support for private sector initiatives. In addition, the government is struggling to practice what it preaches and use its own procurement capacity to assist black-owned SMMEs.

Rett syndrome (RTT) is a rare disorder causing severe intellectual and physical disability. The cause is a mutation in the gene coding for the methyl-CpG binding protein 2 (MECP2), a multifunctional regulator protein. Purpose of the study was integration and investigation of multiple gene expression profiles in human cells with impaired MECP2 gene to obtain a data-driven insight in downstream effects. Information about changed gene expression was extracted from five previously published studies. We identified a set of genes which are significantly changed not in all but several transcriptomics datasets and were not mentioned in the context of RTT before. Using overrepresentation analysis of molecular pathways and gene ontology we found that these genes are involved in several processes and molecular pathways known to be affected in RTT. Integrating transcription factors we identified a possible link how MECP2 regulates cytoskeleton organization via MEF2C and CAPG. Integrative analysis of omics data and prior knowledge databases is a powerful approach to identify links between mutation and phenotype especially in rare disease research where little data is available.AbbreviationsRett syndrome (RTT), embryonic stem cells (ESCs), induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), fold change (FC), Gene Ontology (GO), EIF (eukaryotic initiation of transcription factor)For genes the symbols according to the HGNC nomenclature were used.

Background Latent growth curve modeling was used to investigate the longitudinal link between attachment, effortful control (EC), and maladaptive development during middle childhood. Methods In a community sample, children (Time 1: n = 157; Mage = 10.91) and their mothers were examined three times over a two-year period. Attachment was operationalized at a more strategic (self-reported trust in maternal support) and more automatic level (secure base script knowledge). Mothers reported about children’s EC and maladjustment. Results Secure attachment was associated with higher EC, but EC development was only linked with baseline self-reported trust. Also, EC indirectly linked baseline self-reported trust with change in externalizing and internalizing problems over time. In addition, self-reported trust was indirectly linked with change in externalizing problems over time through EC development. Conclusion EC, and, less robustly, EC development were linked with attachment and change in emotional and behavioral problems.

With the advent of VoIP transport and videoconferencing/telepresence equipment at relative low costs, companies started to use a single provider for data, telephony and video, thus causing three types of transport –with different characteristics and requirements- to converge in a single hard link. The current converging networks carry packages related to three different kinds of services (data, voice and video) and one of the usual classification criteria draws a distinction between traffic with strict time requirements and all other services. As bandwidth is always limited, it is necessary to identify and give priority treatment to this kind of traffic over others sharing the same medium. This paper discusses the assessment and application of different QoS tools on the free internet infrastructure for public spaces in the city of Junín, Buenos Aires, Argentina.

URBAN landscape architecture , *SUSTAINABLE architecture , *TRAILS , *CYCLING , *WASTE lands - Abstract
Today, the dimension of a city is defined by networking relationships. These, however, are not covered in the hierarchically-oriented planning of Wrocław. Spontaneous processes that affect the city, such as growth, densification as well as its shrinkage and disappearance, reveal inefficiency of the applied planning methods which have led to its disintegration into numerous small, separated fragments. Regardless of planning shortcomings, which concern the whole city, today Wrocław struggles with decentralization of the compact historical European city - and a new form of "in between-city" type of urbanity instead, which poses a challenge related to planning and designing the urban landscape. Areas owned by the city remain the biggest and perhaps the only field of interference with the city. They include streets, squares, pedestrian areas, thoroughfares, belts rivers, urban wasteland areas which, owing to their extent, have the potential to merge the city structure in terms of its composition and above all its function. This text is the second part of my research on green areas acting as "soft elements" that control the city structure. The first one focused on examining connections across the city. In order to present the full picture, the analysis included also links existing on a local scale. This paper investigates three selected areas of Wrocław freaturing diverse urban morphologies. Each case was considered with a view to find possibilities for converting empty, neglected lots into green areas. The primary goal was to test different strategies where green areas could be used to build connections for walking and cycling within the urban fabric. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent advancement in brain-machine-interface (BMI) technology has made tremendous impact on both clinical treatment and neuroscience research. It enables neural scientists to record and study signals fired by an individual neuron. To decode simple actions such as open and close a hand or rudimentary movements of an arm, signals from close to a hundred neurons must be examined [Hochberg06]. The large amount of collected neural data must be transmitted out of the skull to an external processer to translate into action or to be analyzed. To minimize the risk of infection to the patients, wireless data transmission is the preferred option. A next-generation 1024-channel implanted neural recorder that uses 20KS/s 8b Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) to capture neural signals can generate up to 164Mb/s data, which imposes a stringent requirement on the communication throughput of the implanted wireless transmitter (TX). In addition, TX power consumption must be kept as low as possible for longer battery life or safe wireless power delivery, while the power consumption of the external receiver (RX) chip outside the skull can be relaxed. The current state-of-the-art implantable transmitters that use backscattering, pulse harmonic modulation (PHM), or ultra-wide-band (UWB) communication suffer either from limited throughput or low TX energy efficiency. Although other techniques such as ultrasound have the potential to achieve ultra-low power, they suffer from low data-rate (tens to hundreds of Kb/s) and severe loss through the skull bone. To overcome these issues, inductive coupling technique is adopted in this work. The proposed transmitter only consists of an inductor driver, which significantly simplifies the TX architecture and lowers power. Inter-symbol-interference (ISI) caused by the ringing of the coupled inductors is alleviated by series de-Q resistors. To further reduce power, the entire TX uses a single 0.5V supply. To generate low jitter TX clock under such low supply and stringent power requirement, injection locked phase-locked loop (PLL) with fully-digital background frequency tracking and spur suppression is utilized. To demonstrate the proposed architecture, a 200Mb/s transceiver is implemented in 65nm CMOS process. The 10mmX10mm coupled inductors are fabricated on standard 2-layer FR-4 PCBs, on which the chips are directly bonded. The prototype achieves 5e-11 bit-error-rate (BER) over 11mm-thick scalp and skull bone of an 8-week primordial piglet and less than 1e-12 BER over 11mm air gap. The TX PLL rms jitter is 59ps. Including PLL, the entire TX chip consumes 300uW, achieving 1.5pJ/b energy efficiency. The power consumption of the external RX chip is 37.2mW. To the author’s best knowledge, the prototype achieves the highest data-rate and lowest BER among all cm-range wireless transceivers for biomedical implant applications.

So far most of the food webs lack parasitism. It has been found that parasites can profoundly affect food web properties. In this study we tried to consider parasitism in the food web analysis in order to provide a basis for further and more complete theory development. The data for topological analysis of food webs was from the food web studies of Lafferty et al. Pajek software was used to conduct topological analysis on food webs. The results revealed that in the food web the number of base species kept to be constant but the number of top species declined remarkably and the number of intermediate species increases sharply when parasitism was considered. Parasitism increased the food chain cycles. There were 508 cycles in the parasite-parasite sub-web but not any cycle was found in the predator-prey sub-web. The connectance and link density increased after parasitism was added. The links between predators and parasites were greater than the links between predators and preys. The connectance of predator-prey sub-web, predator-parasite sub-web, parasite-host sub-web, and parasite-parasite sub-web is 0.29, 0.16, 0.24, and 0.34, respectively. The link density of predator-prey sub-web, predator-parasite sub-web, parasite-host sub-web, and parasite-parasite sub-web is 11.95, 9.84, 15.5, and 7.64, respectively. Chain length increased slightly and omnivorous species and omnivory increased also. The present study revealed that parasitism would yield substantial effects on food web structure.

The author considers journalism as a modern model of mediation and examines how this model was disseminated in societies other than the one in which it was devised and institutionalized. Thus what constituted, at its origin, the internal “logic” of journalism can be understood. As shown in the case study of the Arabic language newspaper Al Hoda, published in the United States at the end of the 19th century, the transfer of this model of mediation to other pre-modern societies became an agency of communication and of a specific mode of social discourse production ensuring an effective articulation between a new configuration of politics and human migration.

Although some variation introgressed from Neanderthals has undergone selective sweeps, little is known about its functional significance. We used a Massively Parallel Reporter Assay (MPRA) to assay 5,353 high-frequency introgressed variants for their ability to modulate the gene expression within 170 bp of endogenous sequence. We identified 2,548 variants in active putative cis-regulatory elements (CREs) and 292 expression-modulating variants (emVars). These emVars are predicted to alter the binding motifs of important immune transcription factors, are enriched for associations with neutrophil and white blood cell count, and are associated with the expression of genes that function in innate immune pathways including inflammatory response and antiviral defense. We combined the MPRA data with other data sets to identify strong candidates to be driver variants of positive selection including an emVar that may contribute to protection against severe COVID-19 response. We endogenously deleted two CREs containing expression-modulation variants linked to immune function, rs11624425 and rs80317430, identifying their primary genic targets as ELMSAN1, and PAN2 and STAT2, respectively, three genes differentially expressed during influenza infection. Overall, we present the first database of experimentally identified expression-modulating Neanderthal-introgressed alleles contributing to potential immune response in modern humans.

Simple Summary Platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio has shown prognostic value in several malignancies; however, its role in cholangiocarcinoma remains to be determined. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of the currently available literature. Overall, our analysis revealed that a high platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio before treatment is associated with an impaired long-term oncological outcome. Further, our results indicate that this assumption was not influenced by the used treatment modality (surgical vs. non-surgical), PLR cut-off values, study population age, or sample size of the included studies. Thus, an elevated pretreatment platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio has valid prognostic value for cholangiocarcinoma patients. The platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), an inflammatory parameter, has shown prognostic value in several malignancies. The aim of this meta-analysis was to determine the impact of pretreatment PLR on the oncological outcome in patients with cholangiocarcinoma (CCA). A systematic literature search has been carried out in the PubMed and Google Scholar databases for pertinent papers published between January 2000 and August 2021. Within a random-effects model, the pooled hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated to investigate the relationships among the PLR, overall survival (OS), and disease-free survival (DFS). Subgroup analysis, sensitivity analysis, and publication bias were also conducted to further evaluate the relationship. A total of 20 articles comprising 5429 patients were included in this meta-analysis. Overall, the pooled outcomes revealed that a high PLR before treatment is associated with impaired OS (HR = 1.14; 95% CI = 1.06-1.24; p < 0.01) and DFS (HR = 1.57; 95% CI = 1.19-2.07; p < 0.01). Subgroup analysis revealed that this association is not influenced by the treatment modality (surgical vs. non-surgical), PLR cut-off values, or sample size of the included studies. An elevated pretreatment PLR is prognostic for the OS and DFS of CCA patients. More high-quality studies are required to investigate the pathophysiological basis of the observation and the prognostic value of the PLR in clinical management as well as for patient selection.

The family-school ties constitute a determined factor in the development of the students. There is an urgent need to articulate them, thinking of establishing a work set that provides academic and affective tools necessary for comprehensive training. This project proposes a pedagogical strategy to strengthen the parent’s participation in the educational process of elementary school students at Centro Educativo Altaír. The work followed by the theoretical foundations of Dealbert, (2009); Comellas, (2011); Epstein, (2002; 2013); Bernabé & Mora, (2012); Diaz, (2014); Razeto, (2018); together with others. Of a qualitative nature and attached to the socio-critical paradigm, the research is of a descriptive type, whose method was action-research. It will resemble the participant observation, the semi-structured interview and the discussion forum, as instruments to carry out the process of collecting relevant information. The discussion is presented around the three categories, where it is made explicit for example: in this school the participation of parents in educational processes was very low, parents do know what family participation means in the education process but don´t practice in real life, the teacher-parent relationship is closer than the manager-parents relation.

The article reveals the scientific side of Russian dialectics, explains two forms of the open law of demand - dependent-objective, and conscious-subjective, and the factors of their manifestation in nature and society. Against the background of the material, the debatable aspects of Western philosophy stand out, one of which is the one-sided dogmatism of the formula “Being determines consciousness”, and Hegel’s definition “Philosophy is an era captured in thought”, which excludes a scientific explanation of the origins of thinking and inner freedom of a person. A scientific substantiation is given to human consciousness - as a factor in the demand for knowledge, and not a special form of matter. The effect of the law of dependent demand is shown as a motivator of the objective infinity of space and time, making them structural links of evolution in the synthesis of movement and development.,

Introduction In this study, we compare three different longitudinal clustering methods. As a case study, the comparison of the methods is conducted for the development of loneliness from middle childhood to young adulthood. The aim is to explore how two nonparametric longitudinal cluster methods compare with a model-based latent class mixture model approach. Methods The trajectories of loneliness of 130 young people between 9 and 21 years of age, were analyzed to find a set clusters within these trajectories. The data for this study were obtained from the Nijmegen Longitudinal Study on Infant and Child Development (The Netherlands). Loneliness was measured at four waves at the age of 9, 13, 16, and 21 years. The nonparametric methods are in the R-packages kml and traj, and the model-based in the lcmm package. Results All methods indicated that the optimal number of clusters to describe the heterogeneity across the trajectories was three. The kml and lcmm methods showed the most similarity in shape of all clusters and fitted the data relatively well, while the traj method yielded somewhat different shapes and didn't fit the data well. Conclusions All three methods corroborate the literature in this field by finding that the largest portion of subjects experience stable and low levels of loneliness. However, the clustering methods also reveal that there is a portion of subjects that experience changes in loneliness during adolescence. By comparing the results of nonparametric clustering methods to the latent class mixture model, this study equips researchers with an example of how to implement these models and thereby contributes to the literature on longitudinal clustering in the social sciences. Altogether the analyses show that it might be useful to investigate different algorithms to identify the most robust solution.

Trophallaxis refers to the chemical communicational process used by certain animals, such as social insects, to communicate the needs of their communities in terms of defense, feeding or reproduction. When applied to groups, trophallaxis explains certain mechanisms of group regulations in which, mainly through language, individuals may produce the group identity, the group’s restricting borders and the dynamic elements that permit inter-individual interactions. If trophallaxis permits communication, ontogenetic alterations and phylogenetic adaptation in insects, symbolic trophallaxis in human groups makes possible the generating of specific ontogenesis of distinct psyches, required for human relationships.

What is the context of our archaeological blogging? When we blog, are we merely shouting into the void? Do archaeological bloggers link only to one another, and do we shout only to each other (which, it must be admitted, is what our journals and conferences do, too, albeit at a slower pace)? Assume a person knows nothing about archaeology: would that person find your blog? Your project website? Your department's website? Does academic blogging matter? One way to answer these questions is through a mapping of the archaeological web. When a layperson finds a site, she might signal its perceived value through linking, retweeting, commenting (once upon a time, on the blog post itself; now more likely via a tweet), and writing her own blog posts about it. Therefore, various network metrics of this map of the archaeological web can be taken as a kind of proxy for evaluating the likely impact of our blogging. Given that these blogs are all publicly available (if one knows or can find the address), blogging is a kind of public archaeology. Not necessarily an archaeology done for the public, but rather an archaeology done in view of the public (cf Richardson and Almansa-Sánchez 2015 on the variety within public archaeology). It would be interesting to know if this kind of public archaeology has an impact at all. These signals and linkages in the general noise of the Internet are the subject of this article. In order for us as archaeologists to generate the strongest possible signals on the web, we need to understand the structures that have emerged within the web to best facilitate dissemination. This can help us increase our signals' visibility, even though all roads eventually lead to Wikipedia.

This paper aims to take into account the process of annotation as it can be inserted in a literary text driven by digital culture. Focusing on a corpus of digital literary texts, it will study how writers use hyperlinking as a way to build a network of allusions or commentaries inside the boundaries of their own text, or as support of reading of an another text. Three ranges of use are to be exposed. The first acts as a mediated reading of one's own work. Guillaume Vissac's Accident de personne, published as a twitter feed in 2010, has been edited as a (digital) whole by digital editor publie.net. The author used hyperlinks to reinforce patterns of similarity between characters and specific circumstances. The second use of semantic links inserts essayistic discourse and urban fabulation, as it can be found in François Bon's Tiers livre, in the web of its tentacular work and in a discursive ground of the social and literary environment of the writer. The third range of use covers writing-as-reading works, where links enact a set of commentaries or a way of rewriting a prior text. Philippe De Jonckheere's site, Désordre.net, and more specifically his project "Tentative d'épuisement de Tentative d'épuisement d'un lieu parisien de Georges Perec," build on this idea. This project takes Perec's own reading of an urban place which tries to exhaust the real world by description, and adds a layer of hyperlinks giving back a reading of the reality depicted by Perec. These three uses show how literary writing in a digital context inherit from the tradition of marginal annotation and inscribe it in the most basic function of electronic publication, which is linking. In that perspective, links appear as a way to build a multidimensional textuality based on the depth of a virtual network.

With the growing awareness of environmental sustainability, reverse logistics is a very timely and critical area. Traditionally, the use of supply chain contracts has been proven to be effective in enhancing the performance of logistics systems. However, the current literature on supply chain contracts in reverse logistics is scattered. As a result, we aim to review in this paper the recent state of the art literature (2006–2016) on supply chain contracts with a focus on reverse logistics systems. We explore the popularity of different kinds of supply chain contracts, and identify the most productive researchers in the area. We classify and examine the literature with respect to the supply chain structure (i.e. the involved supply chain links), and channel leaderships (i.e. who acts as the leader). Finally, we identify the research gaps, suggest five major categories of future research directions and discuss the respective research challenges. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper reviews the research conducted on steel eccentrically braced frames (EBFs). Both component level and system level responses for such braced frames are treated and discussed. For the component level response, a thorough review of the investigations on links, which are the primary sources of energy dissipation in EBFs, has been presented. The results of experimental and numerical studies on strength, rotation capacity, and overstrength of links are discussed. Furthermore, studies on the effects of axial force, the presence of a concrete slab, the loading history, compactness, link detailing, and the lateral bracing on link behavior are summarized. Relevant available research on link-to-column connections is revisited. Different approaches for the numerical modeling of links are also given. For the system level response, characteristics of EBF systems are discussed in light of the capacity design approach. Findings of numerical studies on the seismic performance of EBFs are discussed to provide insight into suitable response factors utilized in the design of these systems. Additionally, special topics and emerging applications of EBFs, such as replaceable links, are provided. The impact of research findings on the design of EBF systems is demonstrated considering the AISC Seismic Provisions for Structural Steel Buildings. Finally, future research needs for improvement of EBF design and application are identified and presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
