Search

Research on metal–organic framework (MOF) materials has gathered increasing interest starting from the early excitement as porous materials for gas storage down to various novel applications as catalysts, heat energy storage materials, chemical sensors, drug delivery and electronic-related devices. Towards these envisioned applications, the specific properties of MOFs need to be tailored strategically to achieve the optimized performance. Since the structural defects in MOFs were recognized by MOF research community, the introduction of defects into MOF structures has been proposed as a way to alter their performance behaviours for the intended applications. For example, MOFs structural defects have been demonstrated to be beneficial in applications such as by leading to: (a) improved gas diffusion and mass transport caused by missing linker and metal vacancies, (b) enhanced catalytic performance caused by the open metal sites, (c) optimized operation of MOF-battery materials by grafted metal ions or counter-ions at defects and (d) other effects on electronic, magnetic or optical functionalities. This review starts with a discussion on the presence and formation of the structural defects in MOFs and thereafter highlights the latest advances in the detection techniques of MOF defects. Later, the discussion focusses on defects’ control towards practices of various interests and finally outlines possible future research directions for MOFs’ defects.

In this study, a novel low-Pt core-shell catalyst is successfully prepared by depositing ultrathin Pt layer on the carbon nanotubes supported titanium nitride nanoparticles (TiN@Pt/CNTs) via a facile pulse electrochemical deposition approach. The catalyst is characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), High-angle annular dark field (HAADF) and energy-dispersive spectrometer (EDS) elemental mapping, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and electrochemical measurements. The results confirm the core-shell structure of the prepared TiN@Pt/CNTs catalyst. More importantly, the catalyst exhibits superb mass activity and durability for the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) than that of the commercial JM Pt/C catalyst. Later experiments data demonstrate that the activity and stability of the catalyst can be further enhanced via copper doping, which results from the modified electronic structure of the Pt atoms and the synergistic effects of the core-shell structure.

Meanwhile, the immune/inflammatory responses regulated by T cells are the critical determinants of atherosclerosis development. However, due to technical limitations, the composition and molecular characteristics of the TCR repertoire in atherosclerotic patients have not been fully elucidated. In the present study, we use powerful immune repertoire sequencing technology to study this issue. Results show that the utilization of V and/or J genes and the diversity of TCRβ repertoire in atherosclerotic plaques are significantly reduced compared to those in the peripheral blood of normal subjects and atherosclerotic patients. The frequencies of the common T cell clones with certain lengths of the complement determining region 3 regions are notably different among all groups. The high-frequency common clones are also increased in the atherosclerotic plaques compared to that in the other two groups. The expansion of several T cell clonotypes (V29-1J2-1, V20-1J1-6, V6-3J2-7 and V11-2J2-2) is validated in atherosclerotic patients. In short, this study reveals that the diversity of TCR β repertoire significantly decreases in atherosclerotic plaques, probably because of the reduced utilization of VJ genes and marked expansion of some T cell subclones. It provides the basis for understanding the roles of T lymphocytes in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis.

The paper provides brief introduction to the National South African Program, branded HySA (Hydrogen South Africa) as well as discusses potential business cases for deployment of hydrogen and fuel cell technology in South Africa. This paper also describes some key activities in the area of hydrogen production and storage within HySA Infrastructure Center of Competence in South Africa. The content of this paper is based on the presentation given during the recent WHEC 2016 Congress in Zaragoza, Spain. More specifically, the discussion of activities at HySA Infrastructure Center of Competence in the paper includes hydrogen production and storage.

The in-situ IR technique was employed to monitor the crystallization process of Zr-fumarate (Zr-fum) MOF under real synthesis conditions. The results evidenced the participations of both modulator acid (HCOOH) and solvent (DMF) during the structural formation of Zr-fum MOF. This observation will contribute to the quest for understanding of the formation of structural defects in MOFs, which is a topic that is currently under intense investigation.

China still has more than 30,000 patients of advanced schistosomiasis while new cases being reported consistently. D-dimer is a fibrin degradation product. As ascites being the dominating symptom in advanced schistosomiasis, the present study aimed to explore a prediction model of ascites with D-dimer and other clinical easy-achievable indicators. A case-control study nested in a prospective cohort was conducted in schistosomiasis-endemic area of southern China. A total of 291 patients of advanced schistosomiasis were first investigated in 2013 and further followed in 2014. Information on clinical history, physical examination, and abdominal ultrasonography, including the symptom of ascites was repeatedly collected. Result showed 44 patients having ascites. Most of the patients' ascites were confined in the kidney area with median area of 20 mm2. The level of plasma D-dimer and pertinent liver function indicators were measured at the initial investigation in 2013. Compared with those without ascites, cases with ascites had significantly higher levels of D-dimer (0.71±2.44 μg/L vs 0.48±2.12 μg/L, P=0.005), as well ALB (44.5 vs 46.2, g/L) and Type IV collagen (50.04 vs 44.50 μg/L). Receiver operating characteristic curve analyses indicated a moderate predictive value of D-dimer by its own area under curve (AUC) of 0.64 (95% CI: 0.54-0.73) and the cutoff value as 0.81 μg/L. Dichotomized by the cutoff level, D-dimer along with other categorical variables generated a prediction model with AUC of 0.76 (95% CI: 0.68-0.89). Risks of patients with specific characteristics in the prediction model were summarized. Our study suggests that the plasma D-dimer level is a reliable predictor for incident ascites in advanced schistosomiasis japonica patients.

Pallets are the most common equipment for transporting and storing goods. More and more companies are willing to rent pallets. Pallet rental companies need to transport pallets from their pallet rental service stations to customers and take these pallets back when they are unloaded. Hence, managers should scientifically configure vehicles for their pallet rental service stations. The fleet size, which indicates the amount and types of vehicles, can significantly affect the efficiency and costs of empty pallet allocation. Therefore, an optimization model for fleet sizing and empty pallet allocation is proposed using the methods of mixed-integer programming and stochastic programming. The objectives of this model are to maximize the profits of pallet rental companies and minimize carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from vehicles. A particle swarm optimization algorithm with inertia weight (IPSO) is developed to solve the proposed model because IPSO can avoid becoming trapped in local optima and is able to find a globally optimal solution within a reasonable number of iterations. A numerical example proves the effectiveness of the proposed model and IPSO. The results of numerical tests show that the amount of CO2 emissions from vehicles can affect the decision on fleet sizing and empty pallet allocation. However, if the price, rental fees, or idle costs of the vehicles with low CO2 emissions are too high, managers would not choose them.

In China, the transportation sector contributes about 18% of the total carbon emissions. This research contributes to measuring the energy and carbon emission efficiency (ECEE) of regional transportation systems (RTS) in China considering uncertain carbon emissions. A radial chance-constrained data envelopment analysis (DEA) model is developed to estimate the overall efficiency, and a nonradial chance-constrained DEA model is presented to evaluate the pure energy efficiency (PEE) and the pure carbon emission efficiency (PCEE). We prove that the proposed chance-constrained DEA models can effectively address the uncertain carbon emissions when measuring efficiency. We find that most of China’s RTS have low ECEE and the inefficiencies are mainly due to the lower gasoline utilization efficiency and the lower kerosene utilization efficiency. In addition, east China performs better than central China, and central China performs better than west China. In China, the unbalanced regional development of the ECEE in transportation corresponds with the unbalanced regional economic development. We provide some valuable suggestions based on the evaluation of the potential cuts in each kind of energy and the potential decreases in carbon emissions.

Adrenal vein sampling (AVS) is required to distinguish unilateral from bilateral aldosterone sources in primary aldosteronism (PA), and cortisol is used for AVS data interpretation, but cortisol has several pitfalls. In this study, we present the utility of several other steroids in PA subtyping, both during AVS, as well as in peripheral serum. We included patients with PA who underwent AVS at University of Michigan between 2012 and 2018. We used mass spectrometry to simultaneously quantify 17 steroids in adrenal veins (AV) and periphery, both at baseline and after cosyntropin administration. Pallet is a very important innovation in logistics industry. Pallets are so widely used that we can find them in nearly every logistical operation scenario. In order to manage pallets efficiently, researchers have developed several pallet management strategies (PMS). The most common and widely accepted PMS includes extensive management of pallets (EMP), transfer of pallet’s ownership (TPO), and pallet rent (PR). This paper addresses mainly on how to help pallet managers choose a certain kind of PMS from the perspective of supply chain cost. Firstly, cost models of three kinds of PMS are presented. Secondly, all parameters involved in the models are valued based on data that is collected from industry survey. The results show that the cost of PR is constantly lower than EMP, and also lower than TPO when the operation period is no more than 37 months. Finally, the effect of several important parameters on the cost is studied by sensitivity analysis. The selection strategies of PMS are proposed based on the results.

In order to develop clean and efficient energy conversion technology, a novel combined cooling, heating and power (CCHP) system using biomass as fuel is proposed in this work. The proposed CCHP system consists of biomass gasification unit, solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC), engine power generation unit and absorption refrigeration unit. Thermodynamic model of the CCHP system is developed for the parametric and exergy analyses to evaluate the performance. The parametric analysis shows that increasing the steam to biomass ratio or the SOFC fuel utilization factor helps to improve the electrical efficiency, while the increase of air equivalent ratio has a negative effect. The exergy analysis shows that the two units of biomass gasification and engine power generation have the largest exergy destruction ratio, which is 46.9% and 16.8% under the biomass flux of 500 kg·h−1. This is because these two units involve in high-temperature thermochemical reaction process, resulting in relatively large exergy destruction. Besides, the tradeoff between maximum exergy efficiency, CCHP efficiency and minimum total annual cost is conducted by multi-objective optimization. Through optimization, the system could reach the high CCHP efficiency of 75% and net electrical efficiency of 52%, as well as the low total annual cost of 410 k$ simultaneously. This work could provide the basic design idea, and high-efficiency and low-cost operation strategy for the practical application of the proposed novel biomass-fueled CCHP poly-generation system.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) materials have been thought to be magic powers with unlimited applications. However, their powdered condition presents difficulty in utilizing them widely in practices. Depending on the envisioned applications, MOFs will be desired to integrate as an application-oriented forms for example thin films into a microelectronic device to achieve the desired performance. In the last decades, atomic layer deposition (ALD) as a truly enabling technology has become the method of choice for films deposition with good quality-control. In this regard, ALD promises to deposit MOFs films onto the target substrates and assist the visibility of MOFs technologies by facilitating MOFs devices integration. This review will collect together the published work that addresses the past ALD research efforts towards MOFs devices integration. Meanwhile, some beneficial concepts from other technological matrix are also pulled in to sparkle the thinking. We aim to provide an understanding on how the ALD technique is currently assisting the visibility of MOFs technologies.

The current study explored the application of the electrospinning technique to produce multi-hierarchical composites for hydrogen storage applications. Predetermined control of fibre porosity is expected to enable production of well-defined hierarchical pore structure. The study involved encapsulation of highly porous zeolite-templated carbon (ZTC) into electrospun fibres and testing of the resulting composites for hydrogen storage. The hydrogen storage capacity of the composite fibres was 1.83%, compared with 2.39 wt% for powder ZTC material. The potential of the electrospinning technique as a shaping option for preparing composites from loose powder is demonstrated. The ZTC–polyacrylonitrile (ZTC-PAN) composite retained about 76% of the hydrogen storage capacity of the ZTC. Vacuum degassing of the ZTC–PAN electrospun composite was also found to enhance the development of porosity, aiding hydrogen penetration into zeolite pores.

Effective hydrogen storage solutions have been pursued for decades, and materials-based hydrogen storage is a research frontier of much current interest. Yet, no researched materials to date have come close to the DOE 2020 targets for hydrogen storage at ambient conditions, although some good results have been reported at cryogenic temperature. This paper critically reviews the current research trends and perspectives on materials-based hydrogen storage including both materials-based physical storage and materials-based chemical storage. In the case of physical storage, the efforts on exploring new porous materials with extra larger surface/pore volume, inducing hydrogen spillover effect, and tailoring reaction enthalpies are discussed. Meanwhile, for chemical storage, approaches to improve the kinetics and/or thermodynamics such as the development of composite hydride systems, nanoconfinement of hydride materials as well as the usage of ionic liquids as hydrogen storage materials or useful additives are discussed. Furthermore, the applied techniques on solid-state materials towards system integration such as shaping and electrospinning processes are introduced. Finally, the concept of storing hydrogen in para form for long-term hydrogen storage is discussed, and a converter packed with catalysts to process the normal hydrogen to para-hydrogen is highlighted.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been considered with various novel applications and the development of cost-effective processes is essential for further practices. In this work, waste PET bottles were demonstrated as the source of acid linker to prepare value-added metal-organic frameworks UiO-66(Zr), and the texture properties as well as hydrogen storage capacity are comparable to those derived from commercial chemicals. This process offers an economically attractive strategy for eliminating waste PET stream while making value-added materials.

In this study, nanostructured graphite (nano-G) was added to LiBH4 and examined with respect to its effect on the hydrogen storage properties of the system. Our study found that nano-G is an effective additive for promoting the reversible dehydrogenation of the LiBH4. A series of control experiments were carried out to optimize the sample preparation method, milling time and addition amount of nano-G. In comparison with the pure LiBH4, the LiBH4/nano-G composite prepared under optimized conditions exhibits enhanced dehydrogenation kinetics and improved cyclic stability. Particularly, after addition of LiH to the LiBH4/nano-G composite, the reversibility was further improved. A combination of phase/chemical state analyses has been conducted to gain insight into the promoting effect of nano-G on the reversible dehydrogenation of the LiBH4. Our study found that nano-G exerts its promoting effect via interaction with LiBH4 and as grinding aid.

It is of great economic value to produce high-value PET-based MOF materials by the veritable elimination of waste PET, and provide sufficient MOF materials for hydrogen storage applications. Consequently, this work demonstrates the use of waste PET bottles as direct source of BDC acid linker during the synthesis of Cr-MOF. The PET-derived Cr-MOF materials showed even better textural and hydrogen storage properties than that from commercial BDC (Sigma–Aldrich).

Background The rules and mechanisms of seasonal changes in plasma lipid levels, which may be related to annual rhythmicity of incidence and mortality of cardiovascular diseases, are still controversial. Objective The objectives of this study were to study the effects of climatic factors on plasma lipid levels and to preliminarily reveal mechanisms of annual rhythmicity of plasma lipid levels. Methods A longitudinal study was performed using health examination data of 5 consecutive years (47,270 subjects) in Jinan, China. The climate in Jinan is typical temperate continental monsoon climate with huge temperature difference between winter and summer (>30°C). Results After considering and adjusting those classical lipid-associated risk factors, such as age, gender, diet, exercise, blood pressure, body weight, change of body weight, body mass index, glycemia, alanine aminotransferase, and creatinine, only air temperature could still significantly affect plasma lipid levels among the main climatic factors (humidity, precipitation, and so forth). For men, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol was decreased significantly 0.35, 0.18, and 0.06 mmol/L, respectively, whereas triglyceride was increased significantly 0.12 mmol/L for every 10°C increase in air temperature. For women, total cholesterol and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol were decreased notably 0.73 and 0.32 mmol/L, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol was increased significantly 0.26 mmol/L for every 10°C increase in air temperature, whereas triglyceride was not significantly affected by air temperature. Conclusion Air temperature is an independent risk factor for plasma lipid levels besides those classical lipid-associated risk factors. The annual air temperature fluctuations might be an important mechanism of the seasonal changes of lipids.

The typical US diet has >30% calories from fat; yet, typical laboratory diets contain 17% calories from fat. This disparity could confound the clinical relevance of findings in cerebral ischemia models. We compared outcomes after neonatal brain injury in offspring of rat dams fed standard low-fat chow (17% fat calories) or a higher fat diet (34% fat calories) from day 7 of pregnancy. On postnatal day 7, hypoxic-ischemic injury was induced by right carotid ligation, followed by 60, 75 or 90 min 8% oxygen exposure. A novel self-humidifying membrane electrode assembly (MEA) with homemade multi-functional Pt/SnO 2 –SiO 2 /C as the anode was developed to improve the performance of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell under low humidity. The MEAs' performance was evaluated at various temperatures and relative humidity levels. One MEA with a Pt/SnO 2 –SiO 2 /C anode catalyst achieved excellent low-humidity performance at a cell temperature of up to 60 °C: the current density reached 600 mA cm −2 at 0.7 V and 1050 mA cm −2 at 0.6 V with 10% RH; after 96 h of continuous operation under the same conditions, the current density decreased by only 16% (to ∼880 mA cm −2 ), whereas the current density of an MEA with JM Pt/C as the anode degraded by more than 60% within 10 h. The contact angle of the Pt/SnO 2 –SiO 2 /C anode was much lower than that of the Pt/C anode, indicating the former's excellent wettability. The high performance of the MEA with the Pt/SnO 2 –SiO 2 /C anode is attributable to the wettability of the doped binary oxide, especially of silicon oxide, and the promotion of tin oxide, which caused an interaction between the Pt and the oxide, resulting in enhanced performance under low humidification.

The role of HIF-2α in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is unclear. The aim of the present study was to investigate the expression pattern and role of HIF-2α in HCC patients. Immunohistochemical staining and western blotting analyses were applied to detect the protein level of HIF-2α in 206 paired HCC and peritumoral tissues. Kaplan-Meier survival and Cox proportional hazard regression analyses were performed to identify risk factors for overall survival and recurrence-free survival in these patients. The function of HIF-2α was studied in HCC cells and in vivo models. We found that the protein levels of HIF-2α in HCC tissues were lower than in peritumoral tissues, and were negatively correlated with tumor size (P < 0.05). Kaplan-Meier survival and univariate analysis revealed that HCC patients with high HIF-2α protein levels had longer overall survival (P < 0.05). Over-expression of HIF-2α induced apoptosis in HCC cells and increased the levels of pro-apoptotic proteins, Bak, ZBP-89 and PDCD4, whereas the inhibition of HIF-2α expression achieved opposite results. The findings were confirmed in a mouse HCC xenograft model. In conclusion, our study revealed that HIF-2α was decreased and played an anti-tumorigenic role in HCC.

Background While the majority of studies report that a raised serum α-fetoprotein (AFP) level before operation is associated with a high risk of recurrence and death in patients who undergo hepatectomy for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), results are conflicting. The aim of this study was to assess the prognostic value of AFP. Methods Serum AFP levels were measured in patients with hepatitis-associated HCC who underwent hepatectomy between 1995 and 2012. Kaplan–Meier and multivariable analyses were performed to identify risk factors for overall and disease-free survival. Univariable and multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression was used to evaluate the predictive value of AFP. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were generated to identify the AFP level that had the highest accuracy in discriminating between survivors and non-survivors. Results Some 376 patients with hepatitis B virus (HBV)-associated HCC were included in the study. The overall survival rate was 58·8 per cent in patients with an AFP level of 400 ng/ml or less compared with 40·4 per cent for those with a level exceeding 400 ng/ml (P = 0·001). AFP concentration above 400 ng/ml was an independent risk factor for shorter disease-free and overall survival after surgery. ROC analysis indicated that the optimal cut-off values for AFP varied for different subtypes of HCC. The sensitivity and specificity were lower with areas under the ROC curve of less than 0·600. An AFP level greater than 400 ng/ml was not sensitive enough to predict the prognosis in patients with an HCC diameter smaller than 3 cm. Conclusion A serum AFP level above 400 ng/ml predicts poor overall and recurrence-free survival after hepatectomy in patients with HBV-associated HCC. AFP is not a strong prognostic marker given its poor discriminatory power, with low sensitivity and specificity.

A novel hybrid system using biomass as fuel for both power and heat generation, which consists of biomass gasification unit, solid oxide fuel cell, homogeneous charge compression ignition engine and waste heat recovery unit, is proposed in this work. Based on the modeling, the system is comprehensively evaluated by multiple approaches including energy, exergy, exergoeconomic and environmental analyses. It is found that the overall energy efficiency and exergy efficiency of the hybrid system could reach up to 68% and 51%, both of which are comparable to those of other reported hybrid fuel cell systems. The exergy destruction of the gasifier is the largest whose relative exergy destruction is up to 21.5%. The component of fuel cell contributes to 71% of the total power but with small relative exergy destruction. On the contrary, the HCCI engine contributes to less power but has larger exergy destruction compared to SOFC. The exergoeconomic analysis showed that the fuel cell component has a high exergoeconomic factor of 98.09% due to the large capital investment cost. By comparison, the component engine has much lower exergoeconomic factors of 5.41%. The cost of exergetic product of the hybrid system is 9.7 $/GJ. Besides, the proposed hybrid system presents a low carbon dioxide emission of about 0.119 to 0.139 t/GJ, which indicates few environmental impacts for the system. These results reveal that the proposed biomass-fueled hybrid system is high-efficiency, low-cost and clean for both power and heat generation, which could be promising candidate as advanced energy conversion technology in practical applications.

N-doped carbon-encapsulated transition metal selenides (TMSs) have garnered increasing attention as promising electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Accurately regulating the electronic structure of these nanohybrids to reveal the underlying mechanism for enhanced HER performances is still challenging and thus requires deep excavation. Herein, a series of pomegranate-like Nix Sey @NC core-shell nanohybrids (including Ni0.85 Se @ NC, NiSe2 @NC, and NiSe@NC) through controllable selenization of a Ni-MOF precursor is reported. The component of the nanohybrids can be fine-tuned by tailoring the selenization temperature and feed ratio, through which the electronic structure can be synchronously regulated. Among these nanohybrids, the Ni0.85 Se @ NC exhibits the optimum pH-universal HER performance with overpotentials of 131, 135, and 183 mV in 0.5 m H2 SO4 , 1.0 m KOH, and 1.0 m PBS, respectively, at 10 mA cm-2 , which are attributed to the increased partial density of state at the Fermi level and effective van der Waals interactions between Ni0.85 Se and NC matrix explained by density functional theory calculations.

Although dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), DHEA sulfate (DHEAS), and testosterone (T) all decline with age, these C(19) steroids correlate poorly with parameters of androgen action in postmenopausal women. METHODS: We quantified 19 steroids—including DHEA; DHEAS; T; androstenedione (A4); and the following adrenal-specific 11-oxygenated C(19) steroids (11oxyandrogens): 11β-hydroxytestosterone (11OHT), 11-ketotestosterone (11KT), 11β-hydroxyandrostenedione (11OHA4), and 11-ketoandrostenedione (11KA4)—using liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry in morning serum obtained from 100 premenopausal (age 20 to 40 years) and 100 postmenopausal (age ≥ 60 years) women. Double immunofluorescence of 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 2 (HSD3B2) with cytochrome b(5) (CYB5A) or sulfotransferase 2A1 (SULT2A1) was performed in normal adrenal glands obtained from eight premenopausal and eight postmenopausal women. RESULTS: DHEA, DHEAS, A4, and T were significantly higher in pre- than in postmenopausal women (2.9, 2.8, 2.9, and 1.6-fold, respectively; P < 0.0001). In contrast, the 11-oxyandrogens did not decrease with aging, and the 11OHT/T and 11OHA4/A4 ratios showed strong positive correlations with age (r = 0.5 and 0.8, respectively; P < 0.0001). Double immunofluorescence analysis showed that with the involution of the zona reticularis in the old adrenals, the sharp zonal segregation of HSD3B2 and CYB5A becomes less distinct, and areas of HSD3B2 and CYB5A overlap are observed. CONCLUSIONS: Unlike DHEA, DHEAS, A4, and T, the 11oxyandrogens do not decline in aging women. Structural changes within the adrenal cortex might explain the evolution of androgen profiles in aging women.

Thyroid cancer is rapidly increasing in incidence worldwide. Although most thyroid cancer can be cured with surgery, radioactive iodine, and/or chemotherapy, thyroid cancers still recur and may become chemoresistant. Autophagy is a complex self-degradative process that plays a dual role in cancer development and progression. In this study, we found that miR-125b was downregulated in tissue samples of thyroid cancer as well as in thyroid cancer cell lines, and the expression of Foxp3 was upregulated. Further, we demonstrated that miR-125b could directly act on Foxp3 by binding to its 3′ UTR and inhibit the expression of Foxp3. A negative relationship between miR-125b and Foxp3 was thus revealed. Overexpression of miR-125b markedly sensitized thyroid cancer cells to cisplatin treatment by inducing autophagy through an Atg7 pathway in vitro and in vivo. Taken together, our findings demonstrate a novel mechanism by which miR-125b has the potential to negatively regulate Foxp3 to promote autophagy and enhance the efficacy of cisplatin in thyroid cancer. miR-125 may be of therapeutic significance in thyroid cancer.

Background The purpose of this study was to examine associations of pretreatment serum carotenoids, tocopherols, and quercetin with prognosis in 154 patients newly diagnosed with head and neck cancer. Methods Pretreatment blood and health surveys were collected. Serum micronutrients were measured by high performance liquid chromatography. Data on recurrence and death were collected annually. Cox proportional hazards models measured associations of serum nutrient concentrations with recurrence and overall survival. Results During a median follow-up time of 37 months, there were 32 recurrences and 27 deaths. After controlling for covariates, subjects with high versus low serum xanthophyll and total carotenoid concentrations had significantly longer recurrence-free time (p = .002 and p = .02, respectively). Overall survival time was significantly longer in patients with high versus low serum xanthophyll concentrations (p = .02). Conclusion Future research should evaluate the possible benefits of interventions to increase intakes of rich food sources of xanthophylls in this patient population. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) hybrid composites have recently attracted considerable attention in hydrogen storage applications. In this study a hybrid composite of zeolite templated carbon (ZTC) and Cr-based MOF (MIL-101) was synthesised by adding the templated carbon in situ during the synthesis of MIL-101(Cr). The obtained sample was fully characterized and hydrogen adsorption measurements performed at 77 K up to 1 bar. The results showed that the surface areas and the hydrogen uptake capacities of individual MIL-101 (2552 m2 g−1, 1.91 wt%) and zeolite templated carbon (2577 m2 g−1, 2.39 wt%) could be enhanced when a hybrid MIL-101(Cr)/ZTC composite (2957 m2 g−1, 2.55 wt%) was synthesized. The procedure presents a simple way for enhancement of hydrogen uptake capacity of the individual Cr-MOF and templated carbon samples.

Nanoporous carbons which possess high surface areas and narrow pore size distributions have become one of the most important classes of porous materials with potential to be utilized for hydrogen storage. In recent times, several metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have been shown to be promising precursors for creating nanoporous carbons due to their high surface areas and tunable pore sizes. The pore structure and surface area of the resultant carbon materials can be tuned simply by changing the calcination temperature. In this work, a zinc-based MOF (MOF-5) and a chromium-based MOF (Cr-MOF) were both used as precursors for syntheses of nanoporous carbons by the direct carbonization technique at different temperatures. The resultant carbon nanostructure from MOF-5 possessed higher surface area, higher pore volume and enhanced hydrogen storage capacity as compared to pristine MOF. Meanwhile, the derived carbons from Cr-MOF displayed lower surface areas, pore volumes and hydrogen uptake than the parent MOF due to the formation of chromium oxide and carbide species in the pores of the Cr-MOF-derived carbons.

Metal–organic framework (MOF) materials are only obtained as loose powders with low packing density and thermal conductivity. To enable the developed MOF powdered materials to be utilized in a hydrogen storage system, in this study, MIL-101 nanocrystals, as an example, were prepared and immobilized on Ni foam as multi-layers. The hydrogen storage properties of individual and hybrid materials were assessed and compared. The hybrid material with 81 wt.% loading of MIL-101(Cr) nanocrystals exhibited a hydrogen adsorption capacity of 1.5 wt.% at 77 K and pressure up to 1 bar. Although the value is compromised relative to that of pure MIL-101(Cr) powder (1.9 wt.%), this approach facilitates the transition of developed MOFs powdered materials from laboratory toward system integration.

This paper presents comparative results of structural, morphological and hydrogen sorption properties between commercial and fly ash-derived zeolite X including their respective templated carbon derivatives. The surface area of commercial zeolite was found to increase by 328% from 796 m2 g−1 to 2578 m2 g−1 upon templation process whereas that of fly ash-derived zeolite increased by 275% from 404 m2 g−1 to 1112 m2 g−1 on templation. The trend in hydrogen uptake was also proportionally mirrored by the surface area. Commercial analysis estimated that the cost of synthesizing zeolite X from fly ash is one fifth that of the existing commercial zeolite production process. The use of fly ash-derived zeolites is expected to present a cost effective and competitive way of producing zeolite templated carbons. Additionally, fly ash zeolitization together with its use in the synthesis of templated carbons also present an attractive way of beneficiating coal fly ash.

In this work, we synthesized Zr-fumarate MOFs by applying water as solvent and formic acid as modulator. Highly crystalline Zr-fumarate MOF obtained from 120 °C, 24 h synthesis conditions showed high thermal and hydro stabilities. Compared to the early reported MOF materials, the lower cost, more environmentally friendly synthesis process and comparable hydrogen uptake capacity make Zr-fumarate MOFs a good candidate for hydrogen storage applications.

In this study, Zr-MOF and Cr-MOF were chosen as representatives of the developed MOFs in our laboratory and were incorporated into electrospun nanofibers. The obtained MOF nanofibers composites were evaluated as hydrogen storage media. The results showed that the incorporation of vacuum degassing was able to create visible porosity in and/or on the PAN nanofibers and the MOF nanocrystals inside the polymeric nanofibers were fully accessible by N 2 and H 2 gases. With 20 wt.% loading of MOF nanocrystals, the composites were able to achieve over 50% of the H 2 uptake capacity of individual MOF nanocrystals. In addition, the composites also showed good thermal stabilities.

Systemic exposures to intestinal bacteria may play a role in the etiology of the chronic, low-grade inflammation that is associated with western diets. Production of lipopolysaccharide-binding protein (LBP) is one biomarker of increased exposures to intestinal bacteria. This study evaluated whether changes in diet quality could affect serum LBP.This was a randomized, controlled trial of Mediterranean and Healthy Eating diets over 6 months in 120 healthy subjects at increased risk of colon cancer. Blood samples obtained before and after intervention were analyzed for LBP, branched-chain fatty acids characteristic of intestinal bacteria, micronutrients and cytokines. Data were analyzed for changes in LBP over time and for predictors of LBP.Serum concentrations of branched-chain bacterial fatty acids declined significantly in both diet groups. However, there was no significant change in mean serum LBP concentrations with either diet intervention. In serum, LBP was positively associated with CRP and negatively associated with carotenoids both before and after intervention. After intervention, LBP was predicted positively by both CRP and bacterial fatty acid concentrations in serum, and negatively by serum carotenoids and the ω3/ω6 fatty acid ratio. This model accounted for 30 % of the inter-individual variation in serum LBP after intervention.These results indicate that dietary intervention over 6 months was insufficient to alter serum LBP. The relationships with inflammation-related markers, however, indicate that anti-inflammatory strategies other than changes in diet quality, such as weight loss or improved fitness, may have more potential for reducing systemic markers of LPS exposures in well-nourished populations.

In a pallet pool, pallets would be delivered through a supply chain. The operation procedure that consists of at least five operation processes as distribution, reposition, recycling, purchase (or rent), and maintenance is quite complex. These pallets are likely to be damaged, lost, destroyed, and so on. So, it is necessary to monitor the pallets using radio-frequency identification technology. However, there is no literature on the management of a pallet pool with both radio-frequency identification–tagged pallets and non-tagged pallets being put into consideration. In our research, an optimization model is presented to manage such a pallet pool. The objective of the optimization model is to minimize the total operation cost of a pallet pool including distribution cost, reposition cost, recycling cost, purchase or rent cost, loss cost, maintenance cost, loading and unloading cost, storage cost, and punishment cost. A particle swarm optimization algorithm is developed in Microsoft Visual Basic. Our numerical example shows that the optimization model and particle swarm optimization algorithm are effective. It is proved that the model and algorithm also can be used to measure whether the investment of a radio-frequency identification system is valuable or not. We proposed some suggestions for the pallet pools management.

In this work, the existence of structural defects in core-shell MIL-101(Cr)@UiO-66(Zr) and pure UiO-66(Zr) wereproposed. It was found that longer synthesis time leads to larger crystals, which are however not perfect as they morphologically appear to be. During the synthesis, the 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid (BDC) linker and modulator (HCOOH) may play competitive roles. The modulator employed does not only modulate the crystal growth, but also contributes in the formation of the MOF framework and promotes defects. Although structural defects would facilitate hydrogen storage in MOF structures, they need to be tuned to an optimum level for hydrogen adsorption purpose.

Background Relatively high serum carotenoid levels are associated with reduced risks of chronic diseases, but inter-individual variability in serum carotenoid concentrations is modestly explained by diet. The bacterial community in the colon could contribute to the bioaccessibility of carotenoids by completing digestion of plant cells walls and by modulating intestinal permeability. Objective To evaluate whether colonic bacterial composition is associated with serum and colon carotenoid concentrations. Design The study was a randomized dietary intervention trial in healthy individuals who were at increased risk of colon cancer. Colon mucosal biopsy samples were obtained before and after 6 months of intervention without prior preparation of the bowels. Participants/setting Participants were recruited from Ann Arbor, MI, and nearby areas from July 2007 to November 2010. Biopsy data were available from 88 participants at baseline and 82 participants after 6 months. Methods Study participants were randomized to counseling for either a Mediterranean diet or a Healthy Eating diet for 6 months. Results At baseline, bacterial communities in biopsy samples from study participants in the highest vs the lowest tertile of total serum carotenoid levels differed by several parameters. Linear discriminant analysis effect size identified 11 operational taxonomic units that were significantly associated with higher serum carotenoid levels. In linear regression analyses, three of these accounted for an additional 12% of the variance in serum total carotenoid concentrations after including body mass index, smoking, and dietary intakes in the model. These factors together explained 36% of the inter-individual variance in serum total carotenoid concentrations. The bacterial community in the colonic mucosa, however, was resistant to change after dietary intervention with either a Mediterranean diet or Healthy Eating diet, each of which doubled fruit and vegetable intakes. Conclusions The colonic mucosal bacterial community was associated with serum carotenoid concentrations at baseline but was not appreciably changed by dietary intervention.

It is disappointing that only a few patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) obtain a significant survival benefit from the sorafenib treatment, which is currently regarded as a first-line chemotherapeutic therapy in patients with advanced HCC. Most patients are highly refractory to this therapy. Therefore, it is necessary to identify resistant factors and explore potential protocols that can be used to overcome the resistance or substitute sorafenib once the resistance is formed. In fact, a growing body of studies has been focusing on the resistance mechanisms or the method to overcome it. The limitation of sorafenib efficacy has been partially but not fully elucidated. Moreover, some protocols have shown encouraging outcomes but still need to be further verified in clinical trials. In this review, we summarize the recent findings on the potential mechanisms that contribute to sorafenib resistance and discuss strategies that can be used to improve the treatment outcome.

Data is provided to show the detailed fatty acid and lipidomic composition of normal and tumor rat colon tissues. Rats were fed either a Western fat diet or a fish oil diet, and half the rats from each diet group were treated with chemical carcinogens that induce colon cancer (azoxymethane and dextran sodium sulfate). The data show total fatty acid profiles of sera and of all the colon tissues, namely normal tissue from control rats and both normal and tumor tissues from carcinogen-treated rats, as obtained by gas chromatography with mass spectral detection. Data from lipidomic analyses of a representative subset of the colon tissue samples is also shown in heat maps generated from hierarchical cluster analysis. These data display the utility lipidomic analyses to enhance the interpretation of dietary feeding studies aimed at cancer prevention and support the findings published in the companion paper (Effects of fish oil supplementation on prostaglandins in normal and tumor colon tissue: modulation by the lipogenic phenotype of colon tumors, Djuric et al., 2017 [1]). This clinical trial developed a personalized dosing model for reducing prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) in colonic mucosa using ω-3 fatty acid supplementation. The model utilized serum eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, ω-3):arachidonic acid (AA, ω-6) ratios as biomarkers of colonic mucosal PGE2 concentration. Normal human volunteers were given low and high ω-3 fatty acid test doses for 2 weeks. This established a slope and intercept of the line for dose versus serum EPA:AA ratio in each individual. The slope and intercept was utilized to calculate a personalized target dose that was given for 12 weeks. This target dose was calculated on the basis of a model, initially derived from lean rodents, showing a log-linear relationship between serum EPA:AA ratios and colonic mucosal PGE2 reduction. Bayesian methods allowed addition of human data to the rodent model as the trial progressed. The dosing model aimed to achieve a serum EPA:AA ratio that is associated with a 50% reduction in colonic PGE2. Mean colonic mucosal PGE2 concentrations were 6.55 ng/mg protein (SD, 5.78) before any supplementation and 3.59 ng/mg protein (SD, 3.29) after 12 weeks of target dosing. In secondary analyses, the decreases in PGE2 were significantly attenuated in overweight and obese participants. This occurred despite a higher target dose for the obese versus normal weight participants, as generated by the pharmacodynamic predictive model. Large decreases also were observed in 12-hydroxyicosatetraenoic acids, and PGE3 increased substantially. Future biomarker-driven dosing models for cancer prevention therefore should consider energy balance as well as overall eicosanoid homeostasis in normal tissue.

A series of novel water-soluble 4-quinolone-3-carboxamides was prepared and evaluated as antiproliferative agents. Preliminary results indicated that most compounds tested in this study showed potent antiproliferative potencies against human tumor cell lines, and compound 8k was found to be the most potent antiproliferative agents with IC 50 value of lower than 10 μM against nine human tumor cell lines. These results suggested that (1) the alkylamino side chain substituent was the advisable pharmacophoric group for the enhanced antiproliferative activities; (2) the length of the alkylamino side chain moiety also affected their antiproliferative potencies, and three methylene units were more favorable; (3) introducing arylated alkyl substituent into N1-position of quinolone facilitated antiproliferative activities of this class of compounds. Further investigations on mechanism of action of this class of compound demonstrated that the representative compound 8k could trigger p53/Bax-independent colorectal cancer cell apoptosis via inducing ROS accumulation.

Due to its three-dimensional tunnel structure, the spinel LiMn2O4 (LMO) cathode material is highly favourable for the migration of lithium ions. Thus, LMO has been used as a commercial cathode material for the electronic devices such as mobile phones and electric vehicles, owing to its special characteristics of low-cost, eco-friendly and non-toxic. However, the scarcity of lithium resources makes the system expensive. On the other hand, the tremendous and increasing usage of lithium ion batteries (LIBs) has undoubtedly generated a significant amount of spent LIBs, resulting in resource waste and environmental pollution. Therefore, in this work, we report on the recycling process of LMO from the spent LIBs and mainly devote to re-examine the electrochemical performances of the regenerated LMO cathode material, for the first time. It is noticed that, the renovated spinel LMO exhibits a better cycling stability up to 500 cycles, with the discharge capacity of 56 mAh g−1 and retained almost 100% of its initial capacity cycled at 1.0 C.

Nanoconfinement has been widely employed as a promising strategy to improve dehydrogenation kinetics, reversibility, and equilibrium pressure of complex metal hydrides. In this paper, we report a careful study of the influence of nanoconfinement on the reversible dehydrogenation property and reaction mechanism pathway of the 2LiBH4–MgH2 composite system. Compared to the bulk 2LiBH4–MgH2 composite, the 2LiBH4–MgH2 confined in the mesoporous carbon (CMK-3) scaffold host exhibits the significantly enhanced dehydrogenation kinetics but meanwhile shows the serious loss of hydrogen capacity upon cycling, particularly in the first two cycles. Moreover, the observed dehydrogenation property is independent of the hydrogen back pressure. The combination analyses of XRD, FTIR, and NMR definitely detected the dominant Mg and B phases in the dehydrogenation products, suggesting the mainly individual desorption of MgH2 and LiBH4 in the confined 2LiBH4–MgH2 system. The available evidence indicates that γ-tocopherol has more potential for colon cancer prevention than α-tocopherol, but little is known about the effects of foods and supplements on tocopherol levels in human colon. This study randomized 120 subjects at increased colon cancer risk to either a Mediterranean or a Healthy Eating diet for six months. Supplement use was reported by 39% of the subjects, and vitamin E intake from supplements was 2-fold higher than that from foods. Serum α-tocopherol at baseline was positively predicted by dietary intakes of synthetic vitamin E in foods and supplements but not by natural α-tocopherol from foods. For serum γ-tocopherol, dietary γ-tocopherol was not a predictor, but dietary α-tocopherol was a negative predictor. Unlike with serum, the data supported a role for metabolic factors, and not a direct effect of diet, in governing concentrations of both α- and γ-tocopherol in colon. The Mediterranean intervention increased intakes of natural α-tocopherol, which is high in nuts, and decreased intakes of γ-tocopherol, which is low in olive oil. These dietary changes had no significant effects on colon tocopherols. The impact of diet on colon tocopherols therefore appears to be limited.

Summary Clay and its recrystallized zeolitic derivatives were used in this study as templating agents for carbon nanostructured materials. The conventional nanocasting process that involves impregnation with furfural alcohol and subsequent chemical vapour deposition was followed. Several techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA) and surface area analysis were used to characterize the parent templating materials including the resulting nanocasted carbons. The study demonstrated that there is greater potential for the use of value-added clays rather than their pristine form and hence presents a cost-effective alternative for producing carbonaceous materials with more attractive properties for hydrogen storage applications.
