Abstract: We report on the rapidity and centrality dependence of proton and anti-proton transverse mass distributions from {sup 197}Au + {sup 197}Au collisions at {radical}s{sub NN} = 130 GeV as measured by the STAR experiment at RHIC. Our results are from the rapidity and transverse momentum range of |y| < 0.5 and 0.35 < p{sub t} < 1.00 GeV/c. For both protons and anti-protons, transverse mass distributions become more convex from peripheral to central collisions demonstrating characteristics of collective expansion. The measured rapidity distributions and the mean transverse momenta versus rapidity are flat within |y| < 0.5. Comparisons of our data with results from model calculations indicate that in order to obtain a consistent picture of the proton(anti-proton) yields and transverse mass distributions the possibility of pre-hadronic collective expansion may have to be taken into account.

Abstract: P. Chaloupka for the STAR collaboration; We present $\pi - \Xi$ correlation analysis in Au-Au collisions at $\sqrt{S_{NN}}=200Gev $ and $\sqrt{S_{NN}}=62.4GeV$, performed using the STAR detector at RHIC. A $\Xi^*$(1530) resonance signal is observed for the first time in Au-Au collisions. Experimental data are compared with theoretical predictions. The strength of the $\Xi^*$ peak is reproduced in the correlation function assuming that $\pi$ and $\Xi$ emerge from a system in collective expansion.

Abstract: We present the results of a systematic study of the shape of the pion distribution in coordinate space at freeze-out in Au+Au collisions at RHIC using two-pion Hanbury Brown-Twiss (HBT) interferometry. Oscillations of the extracted HBT radii vs. emission angle indicate sources elongated perpendicular to the reaction plane. The results indicate that the pressure and expansion time of the collision system are not sufficient to completely quench its initial shape.

Abstract: Suitable techniques for high-speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) services, using wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA), are currently being considered by the third generation partnership project (3GPP). One of the systems currently under consideration is a space-time coding (STC) architecture using the vertical-bell-labs-layered-space-time (V-BLAST) system on the downlink-shared channel (DSCH), which will allow simultaneous transmissions over multiple channels destined for a single user. Although link level results for flat fading channels indicate significant performance advantages over the conventional single antenna systems, it is less successful for frequency-selective fading. Corresponding methods of design implementation are also being developed using techniques such as system-on-a-chip (SoC), digital signal processors (DSPs), and field program gate arrays (FPGA). In this paper, we present a performance comparison for both fixed and floating point DSP implementations for the proposed V-BLAST system.

Abstract: We report results on rho(770)(0)-->pi(+)pi(-) production at midrapidity in p+p and peripheral Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=200 GeV. This is the first direct measurement of rho(770)(0)-->pi(+)pi(-) in heavy-ion collisions. The measured rho(0) peak in the invariant mass distribution is shifted by approximately 40 MeV/c(2) in minimum bias p+p interactions and approximately 70 MeV/c(2) in peripheral Au+Au collisions. The rho(0) mass shift is dependent on transverse momentum and multiplicity. The modification of the rho(0) meson mass, width, and shape due to phase space and dynamical effects are discussed.

Abstract: Measurements of the production of forward high-energy pi(0) mesons from transversely polarized proton collisions at sqrt[s]=200 GeV are reported. The cross section is generally consistent with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations. The analyzing power is small at x(F) below about 0.3, and becomes positive and large at higher x(F), similar to the trend in data at sqrt[s]or =20 GeV. The analyzing power is in qualitative agreement with perturbative QCD model expectations. This is the first significant spin result seen for particles produced with p(T)1 GeV/c at a polarized proton collider.

Abstract: Transverse mass and rapidity distributions for charged pions, charged kaons, protons, and antiprotons are reported for square root of [sNN]=200 GeV pp and Au+Au collisions at Relativistic Heary Ion Collider (RHIC). Chemical and kinetic equilibrium model fits to our data reveal strong radial flow and long duration from chemical to kinetic freeze-out in central Au+Au collisions. The chemical freeze-out temperature appears to be independent of initial conditions at RHIC energies.

Abstract: We present the first large-acceptance measurement of event-wise mean transverse momentum mean p_t fluctuations for Au-Au collisions at nucleon-nucleon center-of-momentum collision energy sqrt{s_{NN}} = 130 GeV. The observed non-statistical mean p_t fluctuations substantially exceed in magnitude fluctuations expected from the finite number of particles produced in a typical collision. The r.m.s. fractional width excess of the event-wise mean p_t distribution is 13.7 +/- 0.1(stat) +/- 1.3(syst)% relative to a statistical reference, for the 15% most-central collisions and for charged hadrons within pseudorapidity range |eta, 11 pages, 2 figures, submitted to Phys. Abstract: Pion-kaon correlation functions are constructed from central Au+Au STAR data taken at sqrt[s(NN)]=130 GeV by the STAR detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The results suggest that pions and kaons are not emitted at the same average space-time point. Space-momentum correlations, i.e., transverse flow, lead to a space-time emission asymmetry of pions and kaons that is consistent with the data. This result provides new independent evidence that the system created at RHIC undergoes a collective transverse expansion.

Abstract: We report results on rho(770)(0)--pi(+)pi(-) production at midrapidity in p+p and peripheral Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=200 GeV. This is the first direct measurement of rho(770)(0)--pi(+)pi(-) in heavy-ion collisions. The measured rho(0) peak in the invariant mass distribution is shifted by approximately 40 MeV/c(2) in minimum bias p+p interactions and approximately 70 MeV/c(2) in peripheral Au+Au collisions. The rho(0) mass shift is dependent on transverse momentum and multiplicity. The modification of the rho(0) meson mass, width, and shape due to phase space and dynamical effects are discussed.

Abstract: A novel nickel self-aligned silicide (SALICIDE) process technology has been developed for CMOS devices with physical gate length of sub-40 nm. The excess silicidation problem due to edge effect is effectively solved by using a low-temperature, in-situ formed Ni-rich silicide. With this new process, excess poly gate silicidation is prevented. Island diode leakage current and breakdown voltage are also improved.

Abstract: We report measurements of single-particle inclusive spectra and two-particle azimuthal distributions of charged hadrons at high transverse momentum (high p(T)) in minimum bias and central d+Au collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=200 GeV. The inclusive yield is enhanced in d+Au collisions relative to binary-scaled p+p collisions, while the two-particle azimuthal distributions are very similar to those observed in p+p collisions. These results demonstrate that the strong suppression of the inclusive yield and back-to-back correlations at high p(T) previously observed in central Au+Au collisions are due to final-state interactions with the dense medium generated in such collisions.

Abstract: The Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) is currently considering suitable systems for the high-speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) service. One of the systems currently under consideration is a space-time coding (STC) architecture using the vertical-Bell-Labs-layered-space-time (V-BLAST) system on the downlink-shared channel (DSCH), which allows simultaneous transmissions over multiple channels destined for a single user. Although link level results for flat fading channels indicate significant performance advantages over conventional single antenna systems, it is less successful for frequency-selective fading. The majority of results thus far assume that perfect channel estimation is available and do not consider a suitable method of channel estimation or its effect on system performance. We present a simple pilot based estimation scheme for this system and illustrate its performance in a frequency selective fading environment.

Abstract: We report high statistics measurements of inclusive charged hadron production in Au+Au and p+p collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=200 GeV. A large, approximately constant hadron suppression is observed in central Au+Au collisions for 5p(T)12 GeV/c. The collision energy dependence of the yields and the centrality and p(T) dependence of the suppression provide stringent constraints on theoretical models of suppression. Models incorporating initial-state gluon saturation or partonic energy loss in dense matter are largely consistent with observations. We observe no evidence of p(T)-dependent suppression, which may be expected from models incorporating jet attenuation in cold nuclear matter or scattering of fragmentation hadrons.

Abstract: To study the intestinal absorption and absorption site of stachyose, one of the oligosaccharides extracted from Rehmannia, in mice and rats.Plasma concentration of stachyose was measured by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with postcolumn fluorescence derivatization after administration of stachyose to mice by oral or intravenous injection. The absorption of stachyose in different sections of digestive tract was evaluated using the intestine loop in situ technique. The kanamycin treated mice were used to study the metabolism of stachyose in intestine.Absorption of stachyose in intestine after oral administration was quick but low, the bioavailability being 3.82%. The absorption rate in stomach, duodenum, jejunum and ileum was 6.03%, 13.80%, 8.33% and 0.53% respectively, no absorption was tested in large intestine. The residual rate of stachyose in the intestine of normal mice and kanamycin treated mice was 8.6% and 93.4% respectively.The intestinal absorption rate of stachyose is low, the main absorption site is the upper portion of small intestine. The unabsorbed stachyose is metabolized by the intestinal microflora.

Abstract: Today, the overall performance of a multi-chip computing system is limited by the interconnection delay between chips. Conventional interconnects based on metal lines are expected to cause unmanageable problems with speed and power dissipation. Optical interconnects provide a solution to these problems. However, the low quantum efficiency associated with radiative recombination in silicon has so far prevented the demonstration of a practical laser. Recently stimulated emission has been demonstrated in Si nanocrystals prepared by ion-implantation. The reported material gain is high enough to realize a practical Si based laser. However, the optical filling factor in these samples was less than 10% due to the poor wave guiding nature of these structures.In this work, we explore a possible way to achieve optical gain in nanocrystalline silicon superlattices. The samples are produced by growing alternating layers of amorphous silicon and SiO2 and then using a two step crystallization method to transform each amorphous silicon layer into a high density array of silicon nanocrystals having identical size. The waveguide structure is formed by sandwiching the superlattice between cladding layers. To measure optical gain we use the variable stripe length method where the amplified spontaneous emission emitted from the edge is measured as a function of the excitation length. Tuning from loss to gain was observed by just varying the pump power.

Abstract: Diamond films are grown using microwave‐plasma‐enhanced chemical vapor deposition (CVD). Some samples are deposited using 0.1% oxygen in the reaction gas mixture. We have measured the cathodoluminescence spectra of these diamond films (at 77 K) and found that there is a significant difference between the samples grown with oxygen and those without oxygen. Some of the impurity‐related luminescence peaks are reduced in intensity or disappear when 0.1% oxygen is used. On the other hand, there are new spectral features in the films grown with oxygen. We attribute some of these new features to oxygen‐related centers in diamond and conclude that oxygen could incorporate into the diamond lattice during the CVD process.

Abstract: With upcoming all sky surveys such as LSST poised to generate a deep digital movie of the optical sky, variability-based AGN selection will enable the construction of highly-complete catalogs with minimum contamination. In this study, we generate $g$-band difference images and construct light curves for QSO/AGN candidates listed in SDSS Stripe 82 public catalogs compiled from different methods, including spectroscopy, optical colors, variability, and X-ray detection. Image differencing excels at identifying variable sources embedded in complex or blended emission regions such as Type II AGNs and other low-luminosity AGNs that may be omitted from traditional photometric or spectroscopic catalogs. To separate QSOs/AGNs from other sources using our difference image light curves, we explore several light curve statistics and parameterize optical variability by the characteristic damping timescale ($\tau$) and variability amplitude. By virtue of distinguishable variability parameters of AGNs, we are able to select them with high completeness of 93.4% and efficiency (i.e., purity) of 71.3%. Based on optical variability, we also select highly variable blazar candidates, whose infrared colors are consistent with known blazars. One third of them are also radio detected. With the X-ray selected AGN candidates, we probe the optical variability of X-ray detected optically-extended sources using their difference image light curves for the first time. A combination of optical variability and X-ray detection enables us to select various types of host-dominated AGNs. Contrary to the AGN unification model prediction, two Type II AGN candidates (out of 6) show detectable variability on long-term timescales like typical Type I AGNs. This study will provide a baseline for future optical variability studies of extended sources.

Abstract: BACKGROUND—There is increasing evidence that the cytokine network is central to the immunopathology of inflammatory airway diseases. The interleukin 1 (IL-1) receptor antagonist (IL-1RN) is a naturally occurring anti-inflammatory agent that binds to the IL-1 receptor but does not possess agonist activity. Each of the genes of the IL-1 locus on chromosome 2q14 is polymorphic. The IL1RN gene contains an 86 bp tandem repeat and allele 2 of this polymorphism has been associated with various inflammatory diseases. The IL-1β (IL1B) gene contains a promoter polymorphism (C-511T) that has been associated with inflammatory diseases and is in linkage disequilibrium with the IL1RN polymorphism. METHODS—We investigated whether polymorphisms in the IL1B and IL1RN genes were associated with rate of decline of lung function. Genotypes were determined in 284 smokers with a rapid decline in lung function and 306 smokers with no decline in lung function. RESULTS—None of the genotypes was associated with the rate of decline of lung function. However, the distribution of IL1B/IL1RN haplotypes was different between smokers with a rapid decline in lung function and those with no decline in lung function (p=0.0005). CONCLUSION—These results suggest that IL1B/IL1RN haplotypes play a role in the rate of decline in lung function in smokers.

Abstract: We report on the tunneling density of states (DOS) in strongly disordered ultrathin Be films quench condensed at 20 K. Above 5 K, the DOS shows the well-known logarithmic anomaly at the Fermi level. Only in a narrow temperature range near 2 K is the DOS linearly dependent on energy, as predicted by Efros and Shklovskii. However, both the zero-bias conductance and the slope of the linear DOS are found to decrease drastically with decreasing temperature. Tunneling measurements at mK temperatures have revealed conclusively that a hard correlation gap opens up in the DOS.

Abstract: Near the superconductor-insulator (S-I) transition, quench-condensed ultrathin Be films show a large magnetoconductance which is highly anisotropic in the direction of the applied field. Film conductance can drop as much as seven orders of magnitude in a weak perpendicular field (< 1 T), but is insensitive to a parallel field in the same field range. We believe that this negative magnetoconductance is due to the field de-phasing of the superconducting pair wavefunction. This idea enables us to extract the finite superconducting phase coherence length in nearly superconducting films. Abstract: Tea (Camellia sinensis) is an important commercial crop in many subtropical and tropical areas of the world. In China, the productivity of most tea gardens is low compared to other tea producing countries. One of the major reasons is that there most of the tea is grown on red earth (Inceptisols, Oxisols and Ultisols) containing marginal amounts of available nutrients. Analyses of typical soil samples from various tea growing regions indicate that the supply capacity of K and Mg is rather poor and generally does not meet the demand for tea at present production levels. Continuous cultivation of tea without K and Mg fertilisation led to serious depletion of soil potassium and magnesium pools. This paper summarizes studies with different tea types carried out in various tea growing areas of China. Results show that the introduction of balanced nutrient application, including K and Mg, greatly improved the nutritional status of the soils and increased yields of the major tea types, e.g. green tea, black tea, and oolong tea, grown in China, respectively. In addition to improved productivity, it is shown that quality, e.g. free amino acids, polyphenols, caffeine as well as theaflavin and thearubigin contents of black tea was considerably increased. These results confirm that balanced nutrition including the nutrients K and Mg is an important measure to improve the productivity of tea.

Abstract: Cathodoluminescence spectra of undoped and boron‐doped diamond films are reported and are compared with each other. The dominant spectra feature of these samples is the broad luminescence bands centered around 2.83 and 2.32 eV in undoped and relatively heavily doped samples, respectively. Our result indicates that the commonly observed 2.83 eV band (often called by the name ‘‘band‐A’’) is neither related to boron nor to donor‐acceptor pairs in diamond. From all of the available data, we conclude that the 2.32 eV band is due to boron related centers and the 2.83 eV band is due to dislocations in diamond.

Abstract: Diamond films were grown using microwave‐plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition. Boron doping in these films were achieved by using 0–1 ppm diborane (B2H6) in the reaction gas mixture during the deposition process. Some samples were deposited using 0.1% oxygen in the reaction gas mixture. We have employed cathodoluminescence to analyze the deposited diamond films and found that the boron concentration in diamond films is significantly reduced when oxygen was used in the deposition. For example, our result indicates that the boron concentration in films doped with 1.0 ppm B2H6 with the addition of 0.1% oxygen is close to that of films doped with 0.01 ppm B2H6 without using oxygen. Therefore, the probability of boron incorporation in diamond films is reduced by a factor of roughly 100 when 0.1% oxygen is used compared with the case where no oxygen is used.

Abstract: Cathodoluminescence (CL) and annealing studies of microwave plasma‐assisted chemical vapor deposited (CVD) diamond films were carried out. The annealing behavior of the 1.681 eV (737.4 nm) line in the CL spectra of CVD diamond films grown on Si substrates is compared with that of the GR1 spectral line (1.673 eV) of natural diamond. We determine that these two lines have different origins. The comparison of CL spectra of diamond films grown on different substrates shows that the 1.681 eV peak is due to Si impurity in CVD diamond films.

233. A New Approach of Direct Digital Control for Spool Valves

Abstract: In many applications, digital valves driven from stepping motors are often characterized by quantitative errors and in some cases, slow response. A new means of direct digital control is introduced for a spool valve actuated by a stepper motor. With this control strategy, both excellent speed of response and accuracy are simultaneously sustained for the valve. By way of illustration, the characteristics of a digital spool valve are theoretically and experimentally investigated. This paper also deals with the design of the controller and some concepts concerning the digital control of a valve, such as initialization, false protection, etc. An example is given to demonstrate the effectiveness of this digital control approach for a practical electro-hydraulic control system.

234. Effect of low-frequency ultrasound on peritoneal transport in rabbits

Abstract: It has recently been suggested that sonophoresis, or the application of ultrasound (US) in the kilohertz range, could enhance peritoneal mass transport. To examine this hypothesis, six nephrectomized rabbits were exposed to ultrasound while under isoflurane anesthesia. An additional five also had bilateral nephrectomies and were used as a control group. Each group underwent four exchanges of 90 minutes duration with 1.5% dextrose while anesthetized. Dialysate samples were taken at 0, 30, 60, and 90 minutes and assayed for urea, creatinine, glucose, and protein. Blood samples were taken pre- and postexchange. In the US group, 20 kHz ultrasound was applied during exchanges 2 and 3 at 47.5 W and 95 W, respectively, using a Virsonic 475 cell disrupter acoustically coupled to the abdomen through a water column and gel-coated PVC membrane. Results were analyzed by calculating the mass transfer area coefficient (MTAC) and 90-minute D/P values for each exchange. No significant differences were observed in the absolute means of either parameter between the control and US groups. However, when exchanges 2 to 4 were normalized with respect to exchange 1, the resulting urea D/P means were less for the US exchanges compared to the control (p0.05). This suggests a possible decrease in transport through US application.

Abstract: We experimentally demonstrated a simple and effective method to write long period fiber gratings (LPFGs) with low fiber grating birefringence using high frequency CO2 laser pulses. Such LPFGs were fabricated by introducing twist strains to the fiber and then exposing the fiber to the laser. We theoretically analyzed the influence of the twist strains on the spectra of the LPFGs, and examined bend characteristics of twisted long period fiber gratings (T-LPFGs). Experimental results showed that T-LPFGs exhibited clear spectra, low insertion loss, and low polarization-dependent loss (PDL) compared with conventional LPFGs exposed to a single-side CO2 laser beam. The slope of the linear equation of the distance between the two split resonance peaks in the bending experiment is 20.55 nm/m−1, which makes T-LPFGs sensitive bending sensors.

236. [Dynamic observation of alpha-granule membrane protein 140 during the treatment of thrombolytic and anticoagulant therapy in patients with acute myocardial infarction]

Abstract: The degree of platelet activation and damage in 15 cases with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) receiving thrombolytic therapy and 15 cases with AMI receiving anticoagulant therapy were studied in vivo and in vitro by using specific monoclonal antibodies (SZ-51S12) against alpha-granule membrane protein 140 (GMP-140). Clinical indexes and myocardial enzyme changes in the two groups of patients were also observed. The results showed that the number of GMP-140 molecules on platelet surface and the concentration of GMP-140 in plasma were increased before treatment. The number of GMP-140 molecules on platelet surface began to decrease on the 1st day and returned to baseline on the 7th day after treatment. The concentration of GMP-140 in plasma reached a peak on the 1st day, began to fall on the 2nd day and returned to baseline on the 3rd day after treatment. There were no significant differences in the dynamic changes of number of GMP-140 molecules on platelet surface and the concentration of GMP-140 in plasma between groups of thrombolytic therapy and anticoagulant therapy. In vitro experiment showed that the thrombolytic medicine urokinase neither activated platelets nor inhibited platelet activation induced by thrombin. Significantly greater reperfusion rate and earlier appearance of CK and CK-MB peaks were found in the thrombolytic than in the anticoagulant group. LVEF determined by echocardiography, rate of return of ST segments to baseline and alleviation rate of chest pain were significantly greater and complications of AMI (ventricular fibrillation, left ventricular failure and angina) were less in the group receiving thrombolytic therapy.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract: Temperature and twist characteristics of cascaded long period fiber gratings (LPFGs) written in PANDA polarization-maintaining fibers have been experimentally investigated. The temperature sensitivity of the proposed structure reaches 102.6 pm °C−1. The amplitude of the peak decreases as the structure is rotated clockwise, whereas it increases as the structure is rotated counterclockwise. The resonance wavelength responds linearly to the twist ratio with a sensitivity of 0.072 nm (rad m−1)−1 for a range of ±21 rad m−1. The proposed structure could be employed for twist and temperature sensing applications.

Abstract: The charging mechanism of electrostatically driven MEMS devices was investigated. This paper shows experimental results of (i) electrostatic discharge (ESD) experiments, (ii) charging mechanism modelling and (iii) Kelvin probe force microscopy tests. It highlighted dielectric failure signature occurred under ESD events and allowed understanding of the underlying breakdown mechanism. A further study of the charging effect in conditions below the breakdown was carried out. A new approach to explore trapping phenomena that take place in thin dielectric used for electrostatic actuation is reported. Indeed a pulse-induced charging (PIC) test procedure aimed at reliability assessment of electrostatically actuated MEMS devices is presented. Based on this method, a procedure for carrying out stress testing was defined and successfully demonstrated on capacitive MEMS switches. In this case, high-voltage pulses were applied as stimulus and the parameter Vcapamin, which is directly related to the charging of the insulator layer, was monitored. The PIC stress test results were correlated with conventional cycling stress ones. Finally, temperature-dependent measurements, ranging from 300 up to 355 K, were reported in order to validate the thermal-activated behaviour of the test structures. According to an Arrhenius model, the given reference material showed an activation energy of around 0.77 eV.

Abstract: A temperature- and strain-insensitive torsion sensor is proposed and demonstrated by utilising a phase-shifted ultra-long-period grating. Experimental results demonstrate that the separation of phase shift resonant peaks changes with the twist rate, but remains invariant with the temperature or strain changes. In addition, it was found that the influence of twisting to the fibre grating is non-uniform along the fibre axis.

Abstract: The interaction of Vit D2 with calcium compounds and excipients commonly used was studied by use of diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS). The results indicated that there was some interaction between Vit D2 and calcium lactate, glucose, and a strong interaction between Vit D2 and magnesium stearate; and that the interaction between Vit D2 calcium gluconate, CaHPO4, sucrose, starch, lactose and mannitol was very weak and could even be neglected.

Abstract: 41 active lupus nephritis patients were treated vigorously with cyclophosphamide (CTX), steroid used as routine, as well as TCM administered according to the various disease stage. 35 cases administered with same western medicine but no TCM was taken as control group.After a six-month treatment course, the therapeutical efficacy was significantly higher in treated group than that in control group (P0.05). Lupus nephritis usually manifested itself as Liver-Kidney Yin deficiency in TCM. Our study suggested that Chinese herbs might play an important role in the treatment of lupus nephritis.

Abstract: Cellular fatty acid (FA) of 28 species of mycobacteria were analysed by capillary gas chromatography (GC). There were more than sixty volatile FA before C12:0 have no any difference between species both in quality and quantity. The identification scheme of Mycobacterium based on cellular FA was presented here. According to this scheme, all the tested species could be divided into 8 groups by the FA peak height order of C18:1, C18:0 and TBSA which were quite stable; after that, 17 species (60%) might be identified to species level with help of some distinctive FA such as C19:0, C21:0. Most pathogenic bacteria could be separated by the scheme (M. tuberculosis, M. bovis and some complexes). This scheme was also demonstrated to be objective rationality by computer cluster analysis with cellular FA components.
